Welcome to our June issue. As we hit the print button, I’lll be doing a little celebratory dance in the office: we’ve completed 12 issues of the Local Ludlow. To report, it’s going extremely well. Ludlow has a lovely feel to it, very community-minded and lots going on. New advertisers join us in Wye Local this month: Eardisley Storage, page 2. Glamping Wales, wedding and event bell tent hire, page 2. Jennings Gas Services, page 2. Sole Trader, no nonsense bookkeeping, page 2. Wye Oak, page 5. Hay Foot Care, page 11. Please do show them your support. This year’s Local Landscapes Photography Competition results are announced on page 19. Four judges had mixed opinions, but thankfully we were able to come to an agreement. A spectacular 2020 Calendar has now been produced, and is currently being stocked in local outlets for visitors to our area to buy and enjoy. Last month I attended a printmaking workshop at the Sidney Nolan Trust, Presteigne. Read all about it on page 20.

“We at Hay Vets like to change our adverts frequently to show offers, clinics and products that we have available. It is so easy to update and upload in PDF format with Wye Local magazine. The whole process of advertising with them is simple and results in a professional finish in a lovely, local publication.”

Clare has sourced a great line-up of events for you, some right on our doorstep, some a little further afield. But one thing is for sure, there’s plenty of choice. See our events feature starting on page 24.

Local Talent: Nicola Hopwood

Type of artist? Stained glass artist. Range of products? Stained glass windows (sitespecific) and hanging panels. Price range? From £300 per square foot for commissioned windows. How long have you been an artist? More than 30 years; where did that time go? Where did you train or gain experience? School of Art & Design, Queen’s Road, Bristol – plus much help and encouragement from numerous lovely people. Artist statement: I design and make windows for churches, private houses and business premises, using the finest handmade glass, sometimes etched or painted and fired, assembled in lead. I also run long-weekend courses, four times a year, at Brilley Village Hall, about 15 minutes from Hay. These are suitable for complete beginners, as well as those with some experience. More details are on the courses page of my website. Where can your products be purchased? Most of my work is made on commission, so, from me. I’m always happy to visit, without obligation or pressure. What has been your proudest moment? Several. The dedication of church windows is always special. St Mary’s at Cusop and St Michael’s at Lyonshall were two local ones. What would you class as ‘your masterpiece’? I hope I haven’t made it yet! Large windows for the African Natural History Research Trust, based in Herefordshire, were a lovely, recent challenge. Have you any future plans for your work? To carry on as long as the opportunities arise; and to keep developing my practice. What advice would you give a local artist? No

advice – just gratitude for living where we do. The inspiration is all around – in the people and the place. Which other local artists do you admire? Victoria Keeble, Sue Milne, Matthew Tomalin, Nancy Sutcliffe, Pat Birks.

Get to really know... Jan Newton Jan started writing as a very mature student in 2008 with an Open University course and just couldn’t stop. Her first crime novel, Remember No More, was published by Honno in 2017 and the second, Rather To Be Pitied, was released earlier this year. Place of birth? Manchester. Where do you live now? Llanafan Fawr. Marital status? Married. Occupation? I’ve been a bilingual secretary, an accountant and a teaching assistant in theWelsh Unit at Builth Primary School. Now I have my dream job – I’m an author. Children? No. Pets? Two dogs, two cats, one horse (who’s been with me for 24 years) and a very small pygmy goat with lots of attitude. What was your favourite childhood television programme? Black Beauty. Apart from the horses, it had the most wonderful theme tune. Are you a collector of anything? Books. My husband says I can’t walk past a bookshop without venturing inside. If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? I think it would have to be a cat. Nobody asks you to learn tricks or to walk to heel. You sit wherever you like, sleep all day and get fed at regular intervals. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Typing much, much faster. What is usually your first thought when you wake up? I’m definitely not a morning person. My first thought is whether or not I can ignore the alarm for a few more minutes. What do you usually think about right before falling asleep? It’s always at that precise moment that a new plot twist or a wonderful new character wanders into my brain. I’m a terrible insomniac, and I’m sure a lot of that is due to the writing. Most exciting thing you’ve won? I won a weekend at a wonderful hotel in the Lake District, as first prize in a short story competition. It was a perfect weekend in one of my favourite places in the world. Two lessons life has taught you? I think the most important lesson has to be ‘never give up’. If you want to do something badly enough, then you’ll find a way. If you’ve always wanted to learn an instrument or write a book, then go for it. The second lesson would

be to concentrate on today. Don’t worry about what’s changed or about what might happen, just make sure you remember today. Have any bad habits? Chocolate. I’m a complete chocaholic. What book would you recommend to others? That’s a really difficult question. I love anything by Jane Austen or Thomas Hardy. Alan Bennett is a huge hero of mine, especially his Talking Heads monologues, but if I had to go for one book I’d say Findings by Kathleen Jamie. One of the essays,‘Skylines’, is amazing. Best present ever received? My horse. I can’t think of any other present that has made me smile every day since 1995. Name one thing you miss about being a kid: Being able to write without being worried about what people will think. Have any hidden talents? I play the euphonium in two brass bands.

BUSINESS PROFILE

McCartneys Estate Agents Rob Fearnley of McCartneys in Hay gives the inside track on estate agency. When was the business started? In 1874. Where are you based? Hay-on-Wye with another 13 local offices. What is your ideal client? Any instruction we receive is important to us, whether it is to sell or let a home, and it is always rewarding when you successfully find the right person for that property. What is your greatest achievement in your business? Every property we sell or let is an achievement and a success for our business. Two lessons having run a business has taught you? Every person is different and has individual needs, so we always adapt our services to meet their requirements. Deliver upon what you promise to the best of your abilities. Do you need to do any annual training to keep your qualifications up to date? We have regular training sessions in place to help keep our staff up to speed with current legislation and changes relevant to the estate agency industry. List one thing you wish you could change about your business: The time it takes to get the legal process through when selling or purchasing a property; it takes too long. Have any hidden talents come to light? Being an estate agent, you need to have a range of skills but I think the most important of those skills is to be a good listener. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you while doing your job? Too many to think of but I was once offered to share a mixing bowl of Sugar Puffs for breakfast by one client and given a spoon to join in – I politely declined. What have you done today to make you feel proud? The first call of the day was to hear that we had received an instruction to sell another property, so that always makes me happy. Sum your business up in five words: Professional, honest, quality, driven, successful

New in Town: Elaine Emmerson Aromatherapy Where are you based and where do you work? I have a treatment room based in Garth, near Builth Wells, but my intentions are to launch my mobile business to reach a wider area. Why the Hay area? I’ve always loved the Hay area, and have spent many enjoyable times there with my family. I feel that there’s a gap in the market for treatments such as aromatherapy. Why did you decide to open this business? I’ve always been interested in holistic treatments, and prefer a more natural way to live and work. I’ve had high-pressured jobs throughout my life, and looked to aromatherapy as a way to find calm and relaxation within the day-to-day. Having fully qualified, I wanted to share my knowledge with other people who are looking to restore health and well-being to the mind and body. Is this the first business you have launched? Having

been qualified in aromatherapy for over four years now I am lucky enough to have established a wonderful client base of regulars who visit my treatment room at my home in Garth. However, this is the first ‘mobile treatment service’ I have launched which is incredibly exciting for me as I love meeting new people. Describe a typical day in your business: A typical day is preparing for the client, ensuring I have everything needed to give them a relaxing and special experience. When they arrive there is always a consultation before every treatment, taking the time to decide which oils would suit the client best. With regards to my mobile business, everything is taken to the client’s home at a time that suits us both. A consultation is still required before every treatment. As it is in the comfort of the client’s home this is perfect for people who don’t have access to a car or cannot drive, or just cannot leave their home for any reason.

Elaine Emmerson BSYA (Arom) Mobile Aromatherapist

Aromatherapy massage is wonderfully therapeutic – warm essential oils enveloping you and easing tension will leave you feeling completely relaxed. Every treatment is unique to you. Oils that can soothe, stimulate, heal and beautify depending on your needs, all in the comfort of your own home...

THE ROSE Since before Roman times gardeners have revered the rose as the queen of flowering plants for the extraordinary beauty and scent of its blooms. The rose family offers an enormous range of colour, shape and perfume from the simple purity of the wild dog rose, the soft, pastel charm of the old garden rose or the jewel-like brilliance of the modern hybrids.

Whether grown alone in the splendour of a formal garden or enhancing the quality of a mixed planting it is hard to imagine a garden without roses heightening the glory of a summer’s day. There literally is a rose for every part of the garden, ranging from the low growing ground cover and patio roses, through the larger bush and shrub roses to the climbers and ramblers for growing up walls, arches, pergolas and even through trees. They all generally prefer an open, sunny site and a fertile soil. When planting, and each year as a surface mulch, it is important to add organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure. For your roses to perform at their best, it is also vital to feed them, preferably twice a year in April and June, with a special rose fertiliser. This done they will reward you with beautiful flowers from June to well into the autumn, year after year. Article supplied by The Old Railway Line Garden Centre, Three Cocks.

that occurs sporadically at the edge of woods and in roadside hedges in the east of the county. Examined closely, the difference is clear, and the “flower” actually consists of a whole array of tiny Bellflowers. Sheep’s Bit occurs in most of Wales, being rather more common in the north west and petering out as you get to the east of Brecknock. Its preferred habitats are dry and stony, and it can occur on the top of rough stone walls. In English the flower is known in many parts of the country as Blue Buttons or Blue Bonnets but the Welsh name, Clefryn, is for this flower and that alone.

Jasione montana Sheep’s Bit Or “bite” maybe. But sheep seem to eat any flower they can reach. This slate-blue flower superficially resembles Devil’s Bit which flowers much later in the season and is in a different family of plants. Sheep’s Bit is related to the Bellflowers such as the common Harebell or rather less common Great Bellflower

Yoga, off the mat How are you today? No, I really mean it. HOW ARE YOU REALLY?! I ask because I’ve just come back from the best course I ever did (in Brighton for five days). I had NO IDEA I was so frazzled and in need of a break until I got there. I was also (looking back) somewhat depressed and felt I’d ‘lost my way a little bit’. I now realise I was ON my way but hadn’t yet recognised it! I immersed myself amongst an incredible group of warm, fellow trainees (20 of them, and four tutors) and immediately felt complete trust. It was called Embodied Yoga Principles (EYP), and was really well thought-out. It was at once emotionally turbulent (death meditation, anyone?), playful, meditative and revealing. I was surrounded by experienced yogis (my Yoga is fitness-based), and therapists, ALL of them were down to earth and welcoming. In fact, my particular brand of Yoga stood me in good stead as I’m so used to freestyle: working with different paces, with my own sequences, and flows (a lot of the course was asking very well practised Yogis to adapt to change and deliberately

pull away from their normal practice). And the purpose? EYP looks at HOW WE ARE. It looks at the body as an ‘I’ not an ‘it’. It takes Yoga OFF the mat and into our daily lives. It’s not a ‘style of Yoga’ but a set of principles in which we take asana (poses) – 26 of them – and asks ‘where do we want to be’, and embody – right into your deepest layers – the asanas MOST suitable to take you there. This is fluid in that what you need one day might be quite different to the next. And each pose (13 Yin and 13 Yang) can be interpreted to suit you. With practise this gives you emotional insight, so helps you to self-regulate (say) cravings, fight or flight, or noticing your own early warning signs that all is not well. Making new futures for yourself (imagine working through what is holding you back and the ramifications of breaking through that?). I can now see with absolute clarity what my direction needs to be (embrace the YIN kind of coach I am, and rejoice in being different!). Article

REVIEW

The Sidney Nolan Trust ‘A rural centre of creative practice and research, inspired by Sidney Nolan’s talent, innovation and passion for cultural exchange, engaging locally and internationally’ Born in Melbourne, Sidney Nolan grew up in a conservative, colonial society in the grips of a savage depression. His family found stable work with the Melbourne Tram Company, but even so had to supplement their income with illegal bookmaking. Living on the streets and beaches around Melbourne, Nolan could have sunk without trace, but instead he became one of the most celebrated and influential modern artists of his generation. The Sidney Nolan Trust owns many of the artist’s paintings and the 17th century barn in which they were painted is now a gallery. The Rodd, situated near Presteigne in the beautiful Herefordshire countryside, was his last home. On a sunny day in May I was lucky enough to arrive at the rural centre. The beautiful buildings, gardens and grounds instantly amazed me. I was there to take part in an introduction to Intaglio Printmaking workshop. The workshop was held in one of the outbuildings. On such a glorious day the doors were open and I just knew nature was going to excel our creative flair. Lo and behold I knew one of the other participants: my art teacher from High School over 16 years ago! What a small world. Our tutor, Jackie H Morris, was spot on. Hugely accomplished in this art form, but keen not to influence us on her own style, she really encouraged us to use our own talents and draw our own subjects. I won’t go into detail of the Intaglio process as future workshops cover different types of printmaking, but I can assure you I would book another workshop in the future. I liked the informal setting. The equipment was all set up before arrival. There were enough workstations for

our small group so we weren’t on top of each other and queuing for the all-important press. Jackie gave a little bit of explanation on the various processes, but not too much detail, so that we could really crack on with our own pieces. With printmaking you never get the same reproduction, so trial and error is an important part. Sometimes an error may create your proudest piece. I’m a doer; I don’t want too much background information, so this was ideal for me. Jackie was on hand the whole time, offering advice, inspiring us, talking about other artists, suggesting tips to improve and, of course, ready to go into more depth - if that’s what you wanted. It just all worked so seamlessly well. The materials and equipment used on this workshop were of high quality. We stopped for lunch, all chatting in the sun with a packed lunch we each brought along. Tea, coffee, water and biscuits were available as and when we needed them throughout the day. I found the day to be really sociable and being in a setting with creative people was inspiring. There are various workshops in ceramics, printmaking and drawing planned over the coming months. Do take a look at their website. The group sizes are limited. Once you’ve attended one of these workshops, you can hire the studio and equipment for £15 for the day. A great opportunity for anyone wanting to take their work further. I didn’t get the chance to look around Nolan’s work in the Gallery, but I do have until the 29th September to go back. Thank you Andrew for your invitation. It was lovely to hear your future plans for The Sidney Nolan Trust. Exciting times ahead. www.sidneynolantrust.org Review written by Lisa Marie Badham

apetito & Wiltshire Farm Foods win 3rd prestigious Queen’s Award Wiltshire Farm Foods and parent company apetito have won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Sustainable Development. The businesses are one of only 201 organisations nationally to be recognised within this year’s honours, with just six winners in the Sustainable Development category.

The award celebrates businesses who demonstrate outstanding levels of sustainable development practices, that have helped to benefit the environment, society and economy, coupled with commercial success. Ian Stone, Managing Director of Wiltshire Farm Foods, says; “Winning this award, our third in total, demonstrates our commitment to not only building a sustainable business in terms of our environmental impact, but also a commitment to our team and community. We employ over 1000 staff across the UK, from those in our Wiltshire home, to our local teams based from the Scottish Highlands to Cornwall. This award is a testament to all our staff and the incredible work they do to make a real difference every day.”

Now in its 53rd year, the Queen’s Award for Enterprise is the most prestigious business award in the country, with winning businesses able to proudly display the esteemed Queen’s Award emblem for the next five years.

Ian continues; “Winning just one of these awards is difficult, so to win three, and our second in three years, is an incredible achievement. A lot of work goes in to winning this award, so being recognised for a range of our practices - including our charity work, our commitment to being a Real Living Wage Employer and our work with the Ethical Trade Initiative - is very special.” Wiltshire Farm Foods operates an extensive franchisee network across the UK, providing delicious food to thousands of customers across the country. Wiltshire Farm Foods Mid Wales employs 15 people in the local area, catering to 3500 customers across the region.

Concerts for Craswall celebrate their 25th anniversary! Saturday 6th July celebrates that key milestone with a special concert in Dore Abbey. This great musical adventure began when local resident Sue Norrington BEM had the idea to stage a live classical concert to raise funds for St Mary’s, Craswall. This proved so popular that since the first performance Concerts for Craswall has for the past 25 years organised three live performances each year. Could Sue, or anyone else for that matter, have imagined how far they’d have come in those intervening years? Over 55 orchestral, choral and chamber concerts later, they continue to attract the very best British and European musicians offering live classical chamber and choral music of the highest calibre. The group have a whole community of ‘friends’ in Craswall and further afield who donate generously and so secure future concerts. Concerts for Craswall also supports the heritage and culture of Craswall itself, with many tens of thousands of pounds having been donated to the community since that first concert. So do join them on Saturday 6th July in the magnificent Dore Abbey to celebrate 25 years of thrilling musical performances. The anniversary concert begins at 7pm offering pieces for choir and solo cello by composers JS Bach, Haydn and Tavener. To mark the occasion, the group have invited a few good friends to perform. The Elysian Singers are one of the UK’s leading chamber choirs under the directorship of talented conductor Sam Laughton;

and acclaimed cellist Amy Norrington enjoys a thriving international career as both a solo and chamber musician. Supporting them will be The Craswall Consort, a group of musicians who have played at Craswall concerts over the years. Worried that the kids won’t sit through an entire performance? Want your budding musician to gain a fascinating insight into how experienced musicians work together? Then go along to their Open Rehearsal. Starting at 10.30am in Dore Abbey the rehearsal’s less formal nature makes it an ideal opportunity for all the family. Not a full concert, rather a sneak peek at these leading musicians at work. Tickets are required for both the evening’s full concert and the Open Rehearsal. For further details visit https://concertsforcraswall.org/forthcoming-events/ or call 01981 510 112.

News from Talgarth by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth It was a real honour to be re-elected Talgarth Town Council Chair at its AGM on Wednesday 15th May. On that occasion, I had cause to thank Town Councillors and well-motivated individuals from across our community for their work to develop and promote the town that I call home. The past 12 months have been very enjoyable, with numerous events and engagements, too many to mention. Prominent amongst those was the opportunity, last May, to join fellow School Governors and members of our wider community for the official opening of Ysgol y Mynydd Du by Kirsty Williams AM, Welsh Education Minister, and Cllr Rosemarie Harris, Leader of Powys County Council. In June, I was delighted to meet and greet participants in the 2018 Black Mountains Classic Tour and to distribute medals to those successfully completing the rally. Last November, I was proud to lay the Talgarth Town Council wreath in our local service of Remembrance, marking the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice. Our newly reinstated Town Hall Basement was a venue for the splendid World War One Ball and congratulations were due to everyone associated with that event. Particular thanks to Cllr Richard Reid for his steadfast efforts in overseeing the building works, with support from Cllr Andrew Bufton. We hosted a special One Voice Wales meeting in January, focussed on Road Safety and Speed Enforcement issues, with Dyfed-Powys Police and Crime Commissioner, Dafydd Llywelyn, several senior Police and Highways Officers. This followed an outreach event that I organised with the Commissioner and the Road Safety Committee at Ysgol y Mynydd Du earlier in the day. It also served as a catalyst to reenergise the Community Speedwatch Scheme, in which Town Councillors and other volunteers are participating. Talgarth Town Council continues to support many local events, defining Talgarth as a dynamic and welcoming destination, which contributes to the local economy in challenging times, including

Talgarth Festival of the Black Mountains, Talgarth Walking Festival and Talgarth Lights Group events. The Town Council made a significant contribution to the Mid Wales Hospital Development Brief consultation, entailing a huge effort on the part of colleagues, most notably our Town Clerk, Josephine Rumsey. The Council sought to act as a conduit for community opinion, whilst facilitating debate and remaining within the spirit and remit of its powers. We rightly fought for a 40-day extension to the period of consultation, and for an inclusive, independently chaired BBNPA consultation event, held in Talgarth Town Hall. The departure of two experienced, long-serving Councillors, Niel Bally and Jacqui Wilding, brought to an end their distinguished contribution in Town Council but their legacy to our community is considerable. Their successors, Cllrs Louise ElstonReeves and Chris Voyle, elected at last December’s by-election, are already making a positive impact. We are also privileged to have the continued valuable input of our Youth Councillor Amy Argent. I offer my genuine gratitude to all our community organisations and the many individual volunteers for their commitment and tireless efforts to improve our community. From the TiRC and the Talgarth Luncheon Club, with their decades of service, through to the freshly constituted Grow for Talgarth/Talgarth in Bloom and the Talgarth Energy Cooperative, they all deserve our recognition and our thanks. My wife Ria has given me constant support throughout the past year, for which I am very grateful and I also thank Deputy Chairs Cllrs Pip Turner and Phil Lewis for their steadfast service and wise counsel. There are areas where fresh impetus and new direction are required and I will continue to work with colleagues to serve the greater good of our town of Talgarth in the time to come. Best wishes, William

News from Kirsty Williams In recent months you may have seen the news that Chester Hospital reduced services for Welsh patients, citing financial reasons. Welsh patients were unable to book planned care, only emergencies and maternity cases. While the situation seems to have been resolved at the time of writing, as someone who represents rural communities any breakdown in cross-border healthcare is cause for concern. I know that people in Hay-on-Wye and the surrounding communities rely on services at Hereford Hospital. Up and down the border there are similar circumstances. In 2017–18 around 60,000 Welsh people were admitted to English hospitals, and around 13,500 Welsh residents were registered with a GP across the border. The issue arose at Chester following changes made by NHS England in the tariffs they use.The tariff system is updated annually, and the hospital made the decision while financial negotiations were ongoing. When situations like this come up there are often rumours that Wales somehow does not pay its bills. I am not aware of any evidence that this is the case. Ultimately, the dispute meant that patients were deprived of services. Structures need to be in place that mean this isn’t allowed to happen, and certainty needs to be provided for patients. The case at Chester seems to be a one-off incident. There is no indication that Powys Teaching Health Board is facing a similar situation with any English hospitals, and of course I hope that remains the case. However, the simple fact an English hospital turned Welsh patients away is concerning. Jane Dodds has called for a longer-term solution that strengthens the protocols and puts patients first. I’m keen that we are on top of the issue so if you experience any issues with cross-border healthcare please do get in touch with me. As ever, if you’d like to discuss this or other issues with me, you can contact me by email at kirsty.williams@assembly.wales or on 01874 625 739. This article is bilingual due to the Official Languages Scheme of the National Assembly for Wales.

Dros y misoedd diwethaf efallai eich bod wedi clywed bod Ysbyty Caer wedi lleihau’r gwasanaethau sydd ar gael i gleifion o Gymru, gan grybwyll rhesymau ariannol dros wneud hynny. Nid oedd cleifion o Gymru’n gallu archebu gofal wedi’i drefnu, dim ond argyfyngau ac achosion mamolaeth. Er ei bod hi’n ymddangos bod y sefyllfa wedi’i datrys adeg ysgrifennu hyn, fel rhywun sy’n cynrychioli cymunedau gwledig mae unrhyw broblemau gyda gofal iechyd ar draws ffiniau yn destun pryder. Rwy’n gwybod bod pobl Gelli Gandryll a’r cymunedau cyfagos yn dibynnu ar wasanaethau Ysbyty Henffordd. Mae yna amgylchiadau tebyg ar hyd y ffin. Yn 201718, derbyniwyd tua 60,000 o bobl Cymru i ysbytai yn Lloegr, ac roedd tua 13,500 o drigolion Cymru wedi cofrestru gyda meddyg teulu ar draws y ffin. Cododd y mater yng Nghaer yn dilyn newidiadau a wnaed gan NHS England i’r tariffau maent yn eu defnyddio. Caiff y system dariffau ei newid yn flynyddol, a gwnaeth yr ysbyty y penderfyniad tra bod trafodaethau ariannol yn dal i fynd rhagddynt. Pan fo sefyllfaoedd fel hyn yn codi mae yna sibrydion yn aml nad yw Cymru’n talu ei biliau rhywsut. Nid wyf yn ymwybodol o unrhyw dystiolaeth bod hyn yn wir. Yn y pen draw, mae’r anghydfod yn golygu bod cleifion wedi cael eu hamddifadu o wasanaethau. Mae angen cael strwythurau i sicrhau nad yw hyn yn gallu digwydd, ac mae angen rhoi sicrwydd i gleifion. Mae’r achos yn Ysbyty Caer i’w weld yn un unigol. Nid oes awgrym bod Bwrdd Iechyd Addysgu Powys yn wynebu sefyllfa debyg gydag unrhyw ysbytai eraill yn Lloegr, ac rwy’n gobeithio y bydd hynny’n para i fod yn wir wrth gwrs. Fodd bynnag, mae’r ffaith syml fod ysbyty yn Lloegr wedi gwrthod cleifion o Gymru yn destun pryder. Mae Jane Dodds wedi galw am ateb hirdymor sy’n cryfhau’r protocolau ac sy’n rhoi cleifion yn gyntaf. Rwy’n awyddus ein bod ni’n cadw llygad ar hyn felly os ydych chi’n cael unrhyw broblemau gyda gofal iechyd trawsffiniol cysylltwch â mi. Yn ôl yr arfer, os hoffech chi drafod hyn neu unrhyw fater arall gyda mi, gallwch anfon e-bost ataf fi yn kirsty.williams@cynulliad.cymru neu fy ffonio ar 01874 625 739.

News from Chris Davies -Your local MP

Last weekend was International Nurses day. A day when people across the country recognise the vital role nurses and other health professionals play in ensuring the public is well looked after in hospitals, surgeries and at home. In 2018 I was proud to be made a nursing champion by the Royal College of Nursing in recognition of my ongoing support and promotion for the nursing community since becoming MP for Brecon and Radnorshire in 2015. Since my election I have focused a large proportion of my work to helping raise health issues in the House of Commons. Health is a devolved policy here in Wales and the Welsh Government have control of the NHS here. Sadly, the Welsh NHS has performed poorly in comparison to the English run NHS and I look for opportunities where our health service here can take tips from across the border to improve and vice versa. I speak with professionals on the ground regularly. Visiting local hospitals, care homes and spending the day with district nurses, visiting patients around Brecon and Radnorshire to see just how vital their role is in ensuring a decent quality of life for those with severe illnesses. My wife works as a therapeutic radiographer and has done for many years. So, I understand the importance of having an effective and well-funded health service that can provide what the public needs and expects. I believe in the coming years technology will play a vital role in modernising our health service, making detections and diagnoses much faster than we currently do.Technology and science will ensure that we can help tackle diseases such as cancer in a much more effective way than ever before whilst doing it at a much more cost-effective way for the taxpayer. Our medical staff will be on the frontline of this technological revolution we are currently going through and their work and dedication to the people they care for is second to none. I hope we can all appreciate the hard work and compassion they show on a daily basis looking after the sick and vulnerable. I for one cannot express my thanks and respect to those on the frontline enough.

News from... News from Black Mountains Lions Black Mountains Lions were delighted to be able to present a cheque for £1,000 for Hay Dial-aRide. The part they play in helping our community is invaluable. Without the buses and the team of volunteers, our public would find difficulty shopping, visiting the doctor, dentist, etc, and getting around in general. They serve a wide rural area and the upkeep of their transport is paramount. We are happy to help towards keeping their buses on the road.

If you would like to know more about the work the Black Mountains Lions do, please give David a ring on 0845 833 740 or email Cheryl at cherylhyde@ btinternet.com. We would love to hear from you if you can help us. Photo: Dial-a-Ride – Mary Fellows, Lesley Moore and Richard Gardener together with some of the Black Mountains Lions. News from Glasbury Get-Together Club Our May plant sale went well – many thanks to all our helpers on the day, and for donations of plants, etc., that were given. We couldn’t do it without you. £470.10 was raised on the day for the Glasbury GetTogether Club. The next club meeting will be on Wednesday 26th June, 2.30–4.30pm at Glasbury Village Hall. New members and guests welcome. Give us a try! Raffle and tea and biscuits later. Check posters for more details. The April trip to Westonbury Mill Water Gardens proved to be a success on a very bright, dry and sunny day.The Gardens are wonderful. Much enjoyed. Don’t forget the Acton Scott Trip on Wednesday

News from Gwernyfed High School Duke of Edinburgh Award Gwernyfed High School prides itself on giving the young people at the school a passport to a brighter future, by offering students the chance to complete the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award and the Gold Duke of Edinburgh award. Mrs McGorrin and Mrs Schofield, our D of E leaders, organise the scheme which provides students with this life changing opportunity. Demand remains high for the D of E awards with increasing numbers of students in the school wanting to take part in the world’s leading youth achievement

award. The D of E awards provide challenging, fun and rewarding experiences and are highly valued by employers and universities alike. Thanks to funding from Duke of Edinburgh Wales this year, the pupils have been provided with brand new rucksacks which they used on their three day practice expedition in April, hiking from Hay Bluff to Llanthony Abbey. All pupils put in an excellent effort during the expedition – well done! This is only one of the many extra-curricular opportunities available to our students. For more information see our half termly newsletters which are published on our website www.gwernyfed-hs. com, or you can stay up to date with our Schoop: ID 20507. News from Hay & District Chamber of Commerce Once again it is festival season in Hay with both Hay Festival and How The Light Gets In bringing visitors from all over the world to the town. We know how important a time this is for all local businesses and it promises to be another busy and exciting year. This year one of the key challenges facing the town is the lack of banks and therefore cash machines.

While this is obviously an issue that is happening in Hay whether we like it or not, as it is in most smaller towns across the UK, and one that affects all businesses and traders, it need not be a hindrance to a successful festival season. By adapting to the needs of our customers we can make visiting Hay as easy and enjoyable as possible during the festival or at any other time of year. To help ease the issues accessing cash a number of businesses in Hay are now offering a cashback service, including Hay Deli, Tomatitos Tapas Bar, C.J. Gibbons Butchers, Jones Home Hardware, R.M. Jones Pharmacy, Spar, Eighteen Rabbit Fair Trade, Addyman Books, Pughs@Londis and Green Ink Booksellers. Please take a look at the Chamber website (hayonwyechamber.co.uk) for a full list. Away from festival fever, the Chamber exists to support all businesses in the town but, this being the original Book Town, we’re very pleased to welcome another new addition to the list of Hay bookshops: Balch & Balch Private Press Bookshop opened at the end of March selling books published by expert letterpress printers and specialists from around the UK and is the only shop of its kind in the world. They

open Thursday to Saturday each week, so do pop along to 20 Castle Street in Hay to see this unique shop. News from Hayfield Organic Garden The garden is just over the bridge towards Clyro, below Racquety Farm. It is co-operatively run by a small group, to Soil Association standards. We grow organic vegetables for our own use and sell any surplus according to season. Look for the roadside sign for details. We mostly meet up on Wednesday and Saturday mornings (10am–12.30pm) but someone may be there on other days and at other times. We grow tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, aubergines, etc., in the ‘dome’ and a wide range of soft fruit and vegetables outside. If you would like to join us, we are seeking new members: no experience necessary but always welcome. Keep fit and feed yourself with the tastiest fruit and vegetables. Contact: hayfieldgarden@gmail.com.

We serve a wide range of beers, lagers, coders, wines, spirits & soft drinks.

News from Hay Markets Ltd Hay Market Day With summer officially welcomed on 21st June we’re looking forward (finally!) to some sunny market days ahead. With the sunshine come new traders to the market, sitting alongside our excellent and committed regular traders (without whom there would be no market, so please do support them by buying your fresh fish, local meat, verdant veg, cheesy cheeses, handmade dog biscuits, tie die leggings – you know you want them – and woolly socks on a Thursday). Newbies include delicious scotch quail’s eggs, gigantic marshmallows, all-butter biscuits, or if bling is more your thing, then the market has welcomed several new jewellery and vintage clothing stalls. And don’t forget the ‘Downtown’ Hay Market by the Clock Tower for bread, plants, jewellery, flea market and vintage clothing; it’s on every week too! The market is always on the lookout for new and interesting traders. Do you have a brilliant business venture you’d like to try out? Well, why not trial it at Market Day? Email info@haymarkets.co.uk or call 07989 980 601 for details.

Oxford Road car park, so access will be excellent. Activities will include: crafts stalls, baby competitions, food and drink, music, games, community stalls, fruit and veg competitions, dog shows and much, much more. It promises to be a fantastic day for the family. For more information, please contact Hay Town Clerk on: 01497 820 296. Volunteers welcome! News from Timbuktu The bursary girls, funded by H2T with support from the Department for International Development, are well into the first term and progressing well. Some of the girls are writing to children in Hay Primary School and write positively despite the fragile situation in Timbuktu (see letter to the right). Support from Hay is very well received in Timbuktu and the schools will be helped further following the Quiz 4 Timbuktu at the Baskerville Arms, Clyro, on Thursday 6th June at 8pm. Please bring a team and join us. News from U3A Hay What was it like to be soldiers in Napoleon’s army? How did they live? What did they wear, and why has re-enactment of these armies and major

battles become such an absorbing fascination? The next meeting of U3A Hay will be a day of history on Tuesday 18th June at 10.30am. Hugh Martyr, organiser of Living History events, will explain its increasing popularity and answer all these questions in his presentation ‘How I Met My Waterloo!’. After lunch, our afternoon session will begin at 1.15pm when local historian Hugh Purcell will bring us closer to home and share his extensive research on the fascinating and fondly remembered former hospital in his presentation ‘History of the Mid Wales Hospital, Talgarth’. This day is open to everyone, at £5 for members and £7 for visitors. Please do come and join us in the Music Room at Baskerville Hall Hotel, Clyro. Coffee is served from 10am and lunch from 12.15pm. We do hope that we see you there! For further information, phone 01497 851 228 or see our website: https://u3asites.org.uk/hay/events.
