Last month I attended a printmaking workshop at the Sidney Nolan Trust, Presteigne. Read all about it on page 10. Team member Claire was invited along to Old Downton Lodge to sample their lunch menu, read her review on pages 16 and 17. Ever wondered about The Furniture Scheme? What an asset to the Ludlow community, see page 18 and 19. Fancy a bit of croquet? There’s a local Club you can join, see page 23. Thanks again for 12 months of support.

BUSINESS PROFILE

When was the business started? Over 75 years ago. What made you set up the business? The business was started to offer a local insurance office to the farming community. A traditional ‘broking’ model was key, to offer a number of insurance solutions by surveying the market on behalf of our clients. These business principles have been maintained over the years and continue to form the heart of our company. Where are you based? We have seven offices across Wales and the border counties: Brecon, Bromyard, Builth Wells, Church Stretton, Knighton, Welshpool, Whitchurch. Do you have ambitions to move or grow bigger? Caleb Roberts Insurance aim to continue growing into the future in a consistent and sustainable manner. We acquired a new office in Whitchurch, Shropshire in 2018 and combined this with an expanding sales team for a successful year. We’re fortunate to have a very loyal customer base, but are always seeking new relationships and opportunities in the local area. Do you need to do any annual training to keep your qualifications up to date? Continuous training is paramount to our business. It is key for the development of our team internally and ensures the advice and service we offer is at the best level we can achieve. Gaining a strong reputation doesn’t come without hard work! What is your ideal job / client? We can cater for

all private business; cars, houses, travel insurance etc… but are most well-known for agricultural and commercial insurance. We look to generate clients who are seeking a long term working relationship, a fundamental part of our business. What is your greatest achievement in your business? Maintaining our independent status in a market where many independent brokers are regularly being bought by large national and multinational companies. Being independent means we can offer the best advice to our clients and access a wide range of insurers and policies. Have you won any awards in your business? Over the years we have won many awards, including the Welsh National Assembly Training Award, but our most recent success was at the Broker Network Awards in 2018 when Ben Amos, who works from our Bromyard Office, was awarded Young Broker of the Year out of a field of 63 nominees from across the country. Do you have future plans for your offices? We are currently midway through updating all of our offices to give a more modern feel. We’ve recently moved the Church Stretton office to a larger premises in Dorrington, near Shrewsbury, whilst the other existing offices are updated. We’ve used 3D logos this time, which really stands out! Sum your business up in five words: Local, independent, dedicated, growing and sustainable.

REVIEW

The Sidney Nolan Trust ‘A rural centre of creative practice and research, inspired by Sidney Nolan’s talent, innovation and passion for cultural exchange, engaging locally and internationally’ Born in Melbourne, Sidney Nolan grew up in a conservative, colonial society in the grips of a savage depression. His family found stable work with the Melbourne Tram Company, but even so had to supplement their income with illegal bookmaking. Living on the streets and beaches around Melbourne, Nolan could have sunk without trace, but instead he became one of the most celebrated and influential modern artists of his generation. The Sidney Nolan Trust owns many of the artist’s paintings and the 17th century barn in which they were painted is now a gallery. The Rodd, situated near Presteigne in the beautiful Herefordshire countryside, was his last home. On a sunny day in May I was lucky enough to arrive at the rural centre. The beautiful buildings, gardens and grounds instantly amazed me. I was there to take part in an introduction to Intaglio Printmaking workshop. The workshop was held in one of the outbuildings. On such a glorious day the doors were open and I just knew nature was going to excel our creative flair. Lo and behold I knew one of the other participants: my art teacher from High School over 16 years ago! What a small world. Our tutor, Jackie H Morris, was spot on. Hugely accomplished in this art form, but keen not to influence us on her own style, she really encouraged us to use our own talents and draw our own subjects. I won’t go into detail of the Intaglio process as future workshops cover different types of printmaking, but I can assure you I would book another workshop in the future. I liked the informal setting. The equipment was all set up before arrival. There were enough workstations for

our small group so we weren’t on top of each other and queuing for the all-important press. Jackie gave a little bit of explanation on the various processes, but not too much detail, so that we could really crack on with our own pieces. With printmaking you never get the same reproduction, so trial and error is an important part. Sometimes an error may create your proudest piece. I’m a doer; I don’t want too much background information, so this was ideal for me. Jackie was on hand the whole time, offering advice, inspiring us, talking about other artists, suggesting tips to improve and, of course, ready to go into more depth - if that’s what you wanted. It just all worked so seamlessly well. The materials and equipment used on this workshop were of high quality. We stopped for lunch, all chatting in the sun with a packed lunch we each brought along. Tea, coffee, water and biscuits were available as and when we needed them throughout the day. I found the day to be really sociable and being in a setting with creative people was inspiring. There are various workshops in ceramics, printmaking and drawing planned over the coming months. Do take a look at their website. The group sizes are limited. Once you’ve attended one of these workshops, you can hire the studio and equipment for £15 for the day. A great opportunity for anyone wanting to take their work further. I didn’t get the chance to look around Nolan’s work in the Gallery, but I do have until the 29th September to go back. Thank you Andrew for your invitation. It was lovely to hear your future plans for The Sidney Nolan Trust. Exciting times ahead. www.sidneynolantrust.org Review written by Lisa Marie Badham

Shrewsbury Food Festival returns this June

The Shrewsbury Food Festival will return in June for its seventh year, with 200 exhibitors, a bigger, better BBQ area, demonstrations, chef school, live music and lots of fun activities for children. The festival was attended by around 30,000 people last year. A new addition to the festival this year will be a ‘free from’ area, reflecting the food industry’s recent proliferation in that market. One in eight Britons are now vegan or vegetarian so it is fitting that the festival will be devoting an area to the movement. The exhibitors will be showcasing a range of exciting products that are free from but still taste filled. Shropshire Festival’s founder, Beth Heath, comments, “Shrewsbury Food Festival is a day for everyone - young or old, foodie or just fond of food - and now for the first time ever, we are introducing a dedicated free from area.

We hope this means everyone will feel catered for, and that it pushes the experiences of everyone to try foods that have been produced in new and exciting ways, to meet the growing demand for free from products. “The food festival evolves every year and we hope everyone joins us for a fantastic weekend of food and fun this June.” As always there will be something for the whole family at the festival, with a dedicated kids zone, under 5’s play area, craft activities and sports. Children will be encouraged to engage with the journey of food and learn about the wonderful, local food producers along the way. Shrewsbury Food Festival will be held on the 29th and 30th June at Shrewsbury Quarry and around the town centre. Tickets are selling fast - purchase yours now at shrewsburyfoodfestival.co.uk

The Ludlow Green Festival – 21 Years and counting The annual Ludlow Green Festival, the biggest event of its type in the region, is taking place on Sunday 14th July. This year’s theme ‘21 Years and Counting’, inspired by the 21 years that Ludlow 21, the organising body has been in operation. The Green Festival has invited schools and youth groups to get involved with their idea of what the world will look like 21 years from now. Other activities on the day include a mega swap of clothes and toys, craft activities, cookery demos and ‘bee bomb’ making workshops and an environmentallyconscious market, along with hot food, live music and local beer. Plus also don’t forget the highly inspiring Wrigley Field Allotments being open to members of the public from 11am - 4pm, just a short walk away. The group Ludlow 21 comprises of local people, all volunteers that share one concern: that current lifestyles and practices are harming our environment in a way that is unsustainable. The group is hoping that recent

international press coverage will help raise awareness locally in Ludlow. Ludlow 21 is about sustainable action for local community and has been involved in many initiatives over the years. Their main achievements have been the setting up of the Local to Ludlow initiative that aims to increase consumption of local food and drink, thus reducing food miles and supporting local producers. Other activities include talks, activities with schools and events such as the Green Festival, highlighting green issues, such as ‘fracking’, and the Fairtrade group and all its activities and achieving Fairtrade status for the town. There is also a sustainable transport group that campaign for electric car charging points and a ‘20’s Plenty’ pledge, as well the ‘Incredible Edible’ group that have done community planting and seed swaps. All these activities are taking place under the banner of ‘Ludlow 21. For more information please see: www.ludlow21.org.uk and www.greenfestival.co.uk

“Truly unique and unforgettable”

Nestled in the heart of the Downton estate, just a few miles outside Ludlow is one of the area’s finest eating establishments. Old Downton Lodge was listed in the top 100 restaurants outside of London, and holds 4 AA rosettes. Combine the vast hospitality experience of the owners, Willem and Pippa, and a Chef with Michelin stars in his sight, and you have the makings for a truly unique and unforgettable dining experience. Their focus is simple – local and natural, using select ingredients sourced from the estate itself. Chef Karl is a member of Slow Food UK, advocating ethics and sustainability in the food industry. Already known for its evening taster menus, Old Downton Lodge now offers a market menu at lunchtimes Thursday to Saturday. Booking is essential. Priced per head at £30 for two courses or £40 for three courses, this makes a perfect gift for loved ones or foodie friends. Upon arrival, we recommend enjoying a pre meal drink in the cosy, relaxed lounge area before going through to the small and intimate, yet grand on style,

dining room. The building has been breathtakingly renovated from its former life as a milking shed. Each course offers a choice of three dishes, each given a simple description on the menu, this being a mere hint of the delightful and intricate dishes on offer. The menu itself is guest personalised, showing the owner’s careful consideration to detail and attentiveness. We both ordered a different dish in each course and shared, the best way to enjoy the menu. After ordering, we were served some beautiful homemade breads, with homemade cultured butter. Our favourite was a soft cupcake style bread, made with local Knighton heather honey. The pleasure of this bread began right at the point the aroma of warm honey hit the senses. Our first course dishes were chicken with mushroom and stone bass with mussels, asparagus and dill. We took a culinary journey through the countryside to the coast, into forests and kitchen gardens. The chicken dish comprised of chicken two ways complemented with foraged pickled mushrooms and a mushroom cream with subtle undertones of spices.

The stone bass dish was like a walk along the coast with crisp saltiness and the green fresh textures of the herbs and vegetables. For the main course, we enjoyed the rose veal. Accompanied on the plate by white asparagus, leek and turnip, sweetbreads and freshly picked nasturtium leaves. The second dish was locally sourced lamb. This was presented two ways with onion, zingy pickled gem lettuce and hazelnuts finished with freshly foraged wild garlic flowers. Both dishes were served with a side of creamed A grade potato and puffed wheat. For us, the gems of this menu were the desserts. We chose the rhubarb, Thai basil and milk dish and the passion fruit, coconut and white chocolate. The rhubarb went beyond the days of being stewed with custard. It dances around your palate in three different forms with a milk foam, white chocolate, a beautiful basil crumb and a vanilla ice cream quenelle. The passion fruit dish revealed itself to be passion fruit three ways, with textures of jelly and mousse, with a coconut cream, white chocolate and sugar crisps and micro marigold leaves. To finish we were given complimentary homemade fudge. Beautifully sweet and salty, which just melted in your mouth. All in all, you’re left with a feeling that your appetite has been comfortably sated and your taste buds have been given a big hug. Will you want to go back and sample the other dishes? Most definitely. Review written by Claire Gutteridge

Q&A with: The Furniture Scheme What is the Furniture Scheme and when did it start? The Furniture Scheme is based in Ludlow and was started in 1994 to address a growing need to find a way to reuse and recycle unwanted household items. The work of the scheme directly places resources into the homes of some of the most excluded members of the community, ensuring that these people can begin to build an independent life and home without increasing debt. Supporting local people and developing their full potential is at the core of our work and we help to enable people to have a brighter future. How many sites do you operate from? We have 4 sites including our Warehouse on Weeping Cross Lane where the public can access some really good value, low cost household items, including refurbished white goods. Renaissance on Tower Street is where we sell our high quality furniture, including items that have been restored and repaired at our workshop which is also on site. A good selection of books can also be found at Renaissance. Also in Ludlow is Rockspring Community Centre on Sandford Road. The centre hosts community activities including a community lunch, the Rockspring Choir, Singing for Lung Health, and Tai-Chi. Finally, we run the charity Bookshop in Craven Arms. This small shop is at Drovers House and is entirely run by volunteers who ensure we have a great range of interesting books on sale. Tell us more about the community lunch at Rockspring: The lunch is at 12.15pm every Thursday. For £2 you can have a hot meal followed by dessert. It’s a great opportunity to have a tasty lunch and meet other members of the community.

There’s no need to book but if you have special dietary requirements please let us know in advance. Everyone is welcome, wherever you live. Some of the produce that helps make the lunch is sourced from our community garden on site at Rockspring. Can the public hire rooms at Rockspring? There are three rooms available to hire – the main hall seats up to 60 and has a projector and PA system. The Teme room can accommodate up to 25 people and the Corve room seats 10. The hire price is reduced for community groups as we want to encourage activities that everyone can access and benefit from. Your work must save a lot of waste going to landfill? We help prevent 200 tonnes of waste going to landfill each year. That’s the equivalent to 2,920 washing machines. Whenever possible we will reuse items but failing that, we try to recycle as much as we possibly can. Preventing waste is essential if we are going to slow down climate change and protect the environment. How can people get involved and support your work? If you would like to volunteer at any of our sites, you can contact Di Hyde, Volunteer Coordinator, on 01584 877751 or email diane@ furniturescheme.co.uk To donate household items, either take them to our Warehouse or if you are in southern Shropshire, contact us to arrange a free collection. Any soft furnishings, including sofas, mattresses and upholstered chairs must have a fire label and electrical items must be in working order. We can’t accept gas appliances or CRT televisions. Items must be in good condition.

Feel the burn

Last month’s article ‘Update Your CV’ explored ways of improving our cardiovascular fitness through aerobic or ‘cardio’ exercise. In reality though this is only half the story. Although we often hear a lot about aerobic exercise and how it improves fitness, reduces our risk of lifestyle diseases, and helps with weight management, we hear much less about another type of cardiovascular exercise, aerobic exercise’s more intense cousin, ‘anaerobic exercise’. So what is anaerobic exercise? While aerobic means ‘with oxygen’ anaerobic means ‘without oxygen’. Anaerobic exercise is short lasting, high intensity activity where your body’s demand for oxygen exceeds its supply. In other words you cannot breathe quickly enough or deeply enough to get adequate oxygen for said activity. So anaerobic exercise relies on energy sources that are stored in our muscles and unlike aerobic exercise is not dependent on oxygen. How do you exercise anaerobically? This sort of activity uses our muscles at a high intensity for a short period of time, therefore you can pretty much adapt any aerobic exercise into anaerobic exercise by increasing the intensity at which you work. If we take running as an example, the 100m sprint is anaerobic and a half marathon is aerobic, different intensity and therefore different duration. Just to muddy the waters a little we rarely work purely aerobically or anaerobically, there is nearly always a collaboration between the two energy systems and in fact the anaerobic energy systems can be broken down even further with one lasting for around 10 seconds and the other lasting for up to 4 minutes, but let’s not go there just now. Typical examples of anaerobic exercise include heavy weight lifting, all types of sprinting whether running, cycling, swimming, rowing, jumping etc, hill climbing, interval training (especially High Intensity Interval Training HIIT) or any rapid burst of hard exercise. How does anaerobic exercise benefit you? Because of the shorter more intense bursts it can: • Develop stronger muscles • Improve your VO2 max (the highest amount of oxygen that you can consume during exercise) and thus also improve your cardio respiratory fitness.

• Increase your capacity to withstand the build up of waste substances (such as lactic acid) and remove them from the body. This means that your endurance and ability to fight fatigue will improve. Overall, although pure anaerobic exercise burns fewer calories and is somewhat less beneficial for cardiovascular fitness than aerobic exercise because of its short duration, if you incorporate anaerobic exercise into an interval session that lasts the same amount of time as an aerobic session you will burn far more calories and really tax your cardiovascular system. Anaerobic exercise is very good at building strength, speed and muscle mass. My recommendation if you are a beginner is to start gently (as with everything) using aerobic activity and then slowly introduce more intense activity as you become fitter, stronger and more able to cope with the increased demands anaerobic activity places on your body. Next month we will delve a little deeper into strength and hypertrophy (muscle building). Whatever you are doing, enjoy it; you should feel the burn, not the pain. Bringing croquet back to life... and Ludlow!

Did you know Ludlow has its very own Croquet Club? It is almost five years since croquet was brought back to life in Ludlow – as part of the Ludlow Castle Bowling and Tennis Club, following the purchase a few years ago of what is known as the North Field, which lies between the Teme and the Linney, including of course five tennis courts and a magnificent bowling green. Ludlow Castle Croquet Club is officially registered with the Croquet Association, and has a dedicated and enthusiastic group of members playing on, and regularly looking after, two full size croquet lawns. It is thanks to both the dedication of its members, who now number more than 25, and a generous grant from the Town Council that the club looks forward to a further successful and enjoyable season in 2019. In the wake of a very healthy growth in the Tennis Club’s membership over the past few years, the Croquet Club is now poised for growth, and keen to recruit new members. The club naturally hopes that enough people will be persuaded to join to ensure the continuing health of the club. The cost of membership is just £50 a year; there are regular ‘club’ sessions on Sunday and Monday afternoons and Thursday mornings, as well as frequent informal games arranged by members. There are also monthly ‘tournaments’ through the summer, which provide members with more opportunities to relax and socialise. Why do I need a Lasting Power of Attorney? Giles Scott, Head of Wills, Trusts and Administration of Estates at Lanyon Bowdler in Ludlow, explains the importance of Lasting Powers of Attorney. It may not be something you want to think about, but it’s vital to be prepared in case you are struck down by something that affects your mental capacity. It could happen suddenly and without warning - and if you are a business owner, it could have serious repercussions for your livelihood. What legal documents are in place to protect your business if you are suddenly unable to work for a period of time? Indeed, you need someone to deal with your affairs whether it is a short absence, or a longer-term change of circumstances, perhaps in the case of Alzheimer’s, Dementia or Parkinson’s Disease. There may also be occasions where you are physically incapable of running your business, through something as common as the flu or a broken bone, or even if you are abroad or on holiday and are unable to get to a particular place to sign a contract in time. The legal answer to these problems is a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), which can either cover just your business affairs, or both your personal and business lives. It is common practice to create one LPA for your personal affairs and one in relation to your business.

Many people think a business colleague or spouse will automatically be able to take over should you suddenly become incapable of administering your affairs, but that isn’t the case and if you haven’t appointed an attorney, the disruption to a business may be substantial. It may not be possible to access bank accounts to pay wages or authorise insurance renewals, potentially severely affecting the day-to-day running of the business. You can choose whoever you wish to be your attorney, provided they are over 18, but it’s important to think carefully about who you appoint. It needs to be someone you trust to make these important decisions for you and is capable of carrying them out. Your attorney must be reliable and have the skills to fulfill the role. You can choose more than one attorney if you wish. Taking out a LPA is something many people don’t think about or leave until it may be too late and they are overtaken by events. But by planning your affairs while still able, you will have the peace of mind of knowing that everything is in good hands should the worst happen. For more advice, call the team at Lanyon Bowdler. apetito & Wiltshire Farm Foods win 3rd prestigious Queen’s Award Wiltshire Farm Foods and parent company apetito have won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Sustainable Development. The businesses are one of only 201 organisations nationally to be recognised within this year’s honours, with just six winners in the Sustainable Development category.

The award celebrates businesses who demonstrate outstanding levels of sustainable development practices, that have helped to benefit the environment, society and economy, coupled with commercial success. Ian Stone, Managing Director of Wiltshire Farm Foods, says; “Winning this award, our third in total, demonstrates our commitment not only building a sustainable business in terms of our environmental impact, but also a commitment to our team and community. We employ over 1000 staff across the UK, from those in our Wiltshire home, to our local teams based from the Scottish Highlands to Cornwall. This award is a testament to all our staff and the incredible work they do to make a real difference every day.”

Now in its 53rd year, the Queen’s Award for Enterprise is the most prestigious business award in the country, with winning businesses able to proudly display the esteemed Queen’s Award emblem for the next five years.

Ian continues; “Winning just one of these awards is difficult, so to win three, and our second in three years, is an incredible achievement. A lot of work goes in to winning this award so being recognised for a range of our practices - including our charity work, our commitment to being a Real Living Wage Employer and our work with the Ethical Trade Initiative - is very special.” Wiltshire Farm Foods operates an extensive franchisee network across the UK, providing delicious food to thousands of customers across the country. Wiltshire Farm Foods Mid Wales employs 15 people in the local area, catering to 3500 customers across the region.

In 1368, Edmund Mortimer, 3rd Earl of March and lord of Ludlow married Philippa, the daughter (and only child) of King Edward III’s second son. Although the Mortimer family began to promote themselves as the heirs to the throne, in practice a series of early deaths, leaving child heirs, made this impractical. Even so, after the Lancastrian Henry IV usurped the crown in 1399, his reign was threatened by people claiming that the child Edmund Mortimer, 5th Earl of March, was the rightful king.

Kevin Smart

When he died childless in 1425, the Mortimer inheritance passed to his nephew Richard, Duke of York, with Ludlow becoming a favoured home. When the Lancastrian dynasty turned against Duke Richard, it was his Mortimer inheritance of land and wealth that gave him the resources to first defend himself, and then challenge for the throne. Importantly, Duke Richard claimed that his Mortimer ancestry, descended from the second son of Edward III, gave him a stronger claim to the throne than the Lancastrian Henry VI descended from the third son. Two crucial events of the Wars of the Roses happened near Ludlow. In 1459, the Yorkist army, which was based in Ludlow, set up its position to the south of the town. However, when the Lancastrian army raised the royal standard, the Yorkist soldiers drifted away, and Duke Richard and his sons fled the scene. Following the ‘Rout of Ludford Bridge’, Ludlow was sacked and pillaged. After the death of Duke Richard in 1460, his son, Edward, who had been brought up at Ludlow and Wigmore, defeated a Lancastrian army at the Battle of Mortimers Cross in 1461. He marched on London where he was later crowned King Edward IV. A Mortimer grandson had become King of England, and Ludlow a royal castle. Please see the What’s On listing at the back of the magazine for the details of a conference on 29th June that explores this in more detail. www.mortimerhistorysociety.org.uk www.ludlowhistory.co.uk
