“ The Local Beacon is a great way for us to reach local people, which as a community theatre is invaluable to us. It’s such a handy publication run by people who know the area and who are lovely to work with!” - Theatr Brycheiniog

This year’s Local Landscapes Photography Competition results are announced on page 12. Four judges had mixed opinions, but thankfully we were able to come to an agreement. A spectacular 2020 Calendar has now been produced, and is currently being stocked in local outlets for visitors to our areas to buy and enjoy. Congratulations to Wiltshire Farm Foods on their recent award. The Summer Menu Pack sounds incredible! Thank you to Libby Pearson for choosing her 10 favourite books, see page 23. We’ve been busy sourcing some super duper events over the next few months, see pages 24 - 29. Don’t forget to check out our what’s on section; it’s grown and there’s something for everyone. New in Town Pila Pala

LADIES & GENTS

FASHION & CASUAL FOOTWEAR

Name of the business? The name of the business is Pili Pala, the logic behind this is the fact that we are in Wales and wanted a Welsh name that hopefully everyone could pronounce. Pili Pala means butterfly - we know, nothing to do with shoes. Where are you based or what is the area in which you work? We opened out first shop in Narberth in 2006 and the second in Carmarthen in 2013 and now in Brecon. Why Brecon town? Why not? We decided to open in Brecon after conducting a feasibility study which came back positive, we were also impressed to see that none of the banks had closed. We were also casually asked by another shop keeper if we would be interested in opening in Brecon, which we dismissed at the time, however a seed was planted.

Pili Pala is a family business established in 2006. We are a specialised shoe shop selling a variety of brands to suit everyone and have a shop in towns in three counties in Wales, namely Narberth, Carmarthen and Brecon. We cater for the customer with problematic feet to a customer looking for a special and unique style. Our numerous brands range from comfort to high end fashion. We can assure you that you will have a warm, friendly & helpful service.

48 High Street Brecon Powys LD3 7AP 01874 624 421

BRANDS WE STOCK: RIEKER • SKECHERS PETER KAISER • GEOX REMONTE • GABOR JOSEF SEIBEL • WOLKY FLY LONDON • HOGL FIT FLOP • PADDERS PAULA URBAN LISA KAY • ARCHE AND MANY MORE

What are some of challenges you encountered? So far, we have not encountered any major challenges and we accept that it takes time to establish a new business. Brecon is very similar to Narberth and Carmarthen, being a market town and a tourist destination. What type of education or experience helped you to open/run/manage this business? My parents have been in business for all of their working lives and I have grown up in that environment, learning that if you provide a loyal and dedicated service, you have more chance of succeeding. Describe a typical day in your business: Everyday is different, some more challenging than others, but mainly rewarding at the end of the day. Without our loyal customers, we would not be able to succeed. Any advice to new businesses in this area? As we are new ourselves in the area we don’t feel that we can give any advice, but it would be heartening to see more independent retail shops giving it a try. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Let’s reverse the trend and get the high street vibrant again.

Protecting wildlife for the future

Wild in June

that occurs sporadically at the edge of woods and in roadside hedges in the east of the county. Examined closely, the difference is clear, and the “flower” actually consists of a whole array of tiny Bellflowers. Sheep’s Bit occurs in most of Wales, being rather more common in the north west and petering out as you get to the east of Brecknock. Its preferred habitats are dry and stony, and it can occur on the top of rough stone walls. In English the flower is known in many parts of the country as Blue Buttons or Blue Bonnets but the Welsh name, Clefryn, is for this flower and that alone.

Jasione montana Sheep’s Bit Or “bite” maybe. But sheep seem to eat any flower they can reach. This slate-blue flower superficially resembles Devil’s Bit which flowers much later in the season and is in a different family of plants. Sheep’s Bit is related to the Bellflowers such as the common Harebell or rather less common Great Bellflower

Keep an eye out for the flower on steep, dry roadside banks. Brecknock at The Wildlife Trust of South & West Wales: www.bit.ly/breconwild My blog: www.bit.ly/breckbot John Crellin

Your work pension may only pay £300 a month if you follow the official guidelines

INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVICE

Millions of workers who save only what the Government recommends will retire with little over £300 a month on top of their state pension.

“Your local source of unbiased advice explained in Plain English”

Recent research reveals how workers who save the suggested minimum portion of their salary towards retirement during their working lives will fall woefully short of the amount they need.

F SAVINGS & INVESTMENTS

The ground-breaking auto-enrolment initiative, which collects pension contributions from workers’ salaries and their employers, has been credited with kick-starting widespread saving for retirement.

F INHERITANCE TAX MITIGATION

But experts fear households who follow the Government’s new guidelines and pay 5 per cent of salary into a workplace scheme, topped up by a further 3 per cent from their employer, could mistakenly believe they are saving enough.

F RETIREMENT PLANNING F MORTGAGES F FAMILY PROTECTION Contact: t: 01874 611911 e: enquiries@beaconifa.co.uk w: beaconifa.co.uk Directly authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority

In order to retire on an income that comes even close to their current salary, they would need to put aside hundreds of pounds more a month. Insurer Royal London’s analysis, based on income received from an annuity, shows just how little people who save the minimum contribution of 8 per cent will have to live on. A 25-year-old with a starting salary of £23,500 that grows by 2.5 per cent a year will build a fund of £104,800 by the age of 65.This would pay out £3,800 a year — or £316 a month. A higher income may be achieved if funds are left invested throughout retirement but this involves taking a higher level of risk. According to Royal London, people should aim to save around 14 percent of their salary towards a pension. We advise workers to find out the maximum their employer will contribute. Some companies will match the contributions paid by their workers which provides a great incentive to save more. – Tom Russell – Director of Beacon IFA Ltd

Brecon’s geographical position is reflected in the Welsh name for Brecon, which is Aberhonddu – the mouth or confluence of the Honddu river (with the Usk river). The main bridge into Brecon spans the river Usk. It was originally built in medieval times. That bridge was washed away by flooding in 1535. A new bridge was built in 1563 during the life of Elizabeth l [15331603]. In 1772 this second bridge was repaired and in 1794 it was widened. Its stone parapets were visible until the modernisation of the bridge in the 1970s, hid much of the original structure. The Watergate or Honddu Bridge spans a much narrower and more turbulent river. This river provided water for a number of Mills on its banks. The iron Honddu Bridge over the river was built in 1874 to replace a stone bridge which had been badly damaged in a serious flood the year before. The present bridge has regularity had to be repaired and strengthened due to the power of the flooded river Honddu. The river’s name is unusual and early recorded spellings include Hothenei and Hodni. www.blfhs.co.uk © Breconshire Local & Family History Society

apetito & Wiltshire Farm Foods win 3rd prestigious Queen’s Award Wiltshire Farm Foods and parent company apetito have won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Sustainable Development. The businesses are one of only 201 organisations nationally to be recognised within this year’s honours, with just six winners in the Sustainable Development category.

The award celebrates businesses who demonstrate outstanding levels of sustainable development practices, that have helped to benefit the environment, society and economy, coupled with commercial success. Ian Stone, Managing Director of Wiltshire Farm Foods, says; “Winning this award, our third in total, demonstrates our commitment to not only building a sustainable business in terms of our environmental impact, but also a commitment to our team and community. We employ over 1000 staff across the UK, from those in our Wiltshire home, to our local teams based from the Scottish Highlands to Cornwall. This award is a testament to all our staff and the incredible work they do to make a real difference every day.”

Now in its 53rd year, the Queen’s Award for Enterprise is the most prestigious business award in the country, with winning businesses able to proudly display the esteemed Queen’s Award emblem for the next five years.

Ian continues; “Winning just one of these awards is difficult, so to win three, and our second in three years, is an incredible achievement. A lot of work goes in to winning this award, so being recognised for a range of our practices - including our charity work, our commitment to being a Real Living Wage Employer and our work with the Ethical Trade Initiative - is very special.” Wiltshire Farm Foods operates an extensive franchisee network across the UK, providing delicious food to thousands of customers across the country. Wiltshire Farm Foods Mid Wales employs 15 people in the local area, catering to 3500 customers across the region.

A list of 10

...books Libby Pearson

As project manager for Black Mountains College Libby is passionate about building an educational experience open to all - particularly non-traditional learners - to support their ongoing careers and help shape global citizens of the future. More details here at www.blackmountainscollege.uk Libby’s top 10 favourite books cover a mix of postapocalyptic tales of dystopian futures, satire, good old fashioned stories and evidence based solutions for a better brighter world for our future generations. A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole The buffoonery, crazy characters and allegory of Ignatius’ pyloric valve never fails to make me laugh. The Book of Dave by Will Self - Captivating and contemplative of the origins of ‘religion’ through Self ’s caustic satirical views of contemporary life. The Magus by John Fowles - A great visual that stretches and distorts imagination and time to cinematic proportions. City of Thorns by Ben Rawlence - A wonderful yet tragic account of life in the World’s largest refugee camp. It is gripping, terrifying, utterly heartwrenching, and completely beautiful. Live from Golgotha: The Gospel According to Gore Vidal - A satirical view of how modern media will stop at nothing for a story. The Road by Cormac McCarthy - A brutal, emotionally shattering novel set in post-apocalyptic America. Natural Born Learners by Alex Beard - An honest and straight forward take on how a balanced 21st-century education should look like and how can it help all young people, not just the most able or privileged, flourish. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt - With its twists and turns, bizarre characters I love this tale with its sublime and seductive intertwining stories. This portrait of a beguiling small ‘town’ could be almost anywhere in the Western world ….or Wales! My Sister the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite - A funny novel about family, loyalty and limits. Luckily I don’t have a sister LOL! Utopia for Realists by Rutger Bregman - Brilliant evidence-based ideas on how to make a better world for our future generations. Article supplied by Lynn Clausen of Raven Drama

For lovers of art

Saturday 8th June Sunday 9th June 11am - 6pm

For lovers of art, Brecon Town Open Studios is on 8th - 9th June. It was set up as a walking art trail around the centre of the lovely market town, taking in the studios of a number of Brecon’s resident artists. The event is a great reason to be in Brecon over the weekend of 8th - 9th June, and a great way to explore the town and meet some of its artistic community. They include painters and illustrators, photographers, a glassmaker, a silversmith, a jewellery maker, and a weaver / sculptor. The walking trail connects some of Brecon’s elegant Georgian streets and lesser-known byways. It’s a good excuse for a day out which could also include visits to some of Brecon’s other attractions such as its beautiful Cathedral or walks in the Priory Groves or on the promenade along the River Usk. Entry to all of the studios is free.A map and information can be picked up at any of the studios or at many venues in Brecon, and more information is available at

Tyn y Cwm

Powys gardens open for charity As midsummer approaches the gardens are changing. June is one of the best months to enjoy roses and the wild flower meadows begin to bloom. Research conducted by the National Garden Scheme in 2018 revealed that visiting a private garden is good for the soul. Over 85% of supporters report that being in a National Garden Scheme garden has a positive impact on their mental wellbeing. In Powys we can offer stunning gardens surrounded by spectacular countryside providing great spaces to relax and escape the stresses of everyday life. In a beautiful setting in the heart of the Radnor Valley, The Hymns at Presteigne, with a wild flower meadow and long views to the hills and Radnor Forest, reflects the County motto : ‘Powys Paradwys Cymru’, ‘Powys – the paradise of Wales’. Next to St Matthew’s 15th century Church, the garden at Church House at Llandefalle, Brecon, was skilfully landscaped in the 1980s to provide terraces and generous borders and more recently a small pond and rill have been added. Tranquil places to sit and enjoy fine views of the Black mountains make this a special place.

News from Chris Davies -Your local MP

Animal Funeral Services

Last weekend was International Nurses day. A day when people across the country recognise the vital role nurses and other health professionals play in ensuring the public is well looked after in hospitals, surgeries and at home.

Individual cremation service for all pets with collections either made from your home or veterinary practice.

In 2018 I was proud to be made a nursing champion by the Royal College of Nursing in recognition of my ongoing support and promotion for the nursing community since becoming MP for Brecon and Radnorshire in 2015. Since my election, I have focused a large proportion of my work to helping raise health issues in the House of Commons. Health is a devolved policy here in Wales and the Welsh Government have control of the NHS here. Sadly, the Welsh NHS has performed poorly in comparison to the English run NHS and I look for opportunities where our health service here can take tips from across the border to improve and vice versa. I speak with professionals on the ground regularly. Visiting local hospitals, care homes and spending the day with district nurses, visiting patients around Brecon and Radnorshire to see just how vital their role is in ensuring a decent quality of life for those with severe illnesses. My wife works as a therapeutic radiographer and has done for many years. So, I understand the importance of having an effective and well-funded health service that can provide what the public needs and expects. I believe in the coming years technology will play a vital role in modernising our health service, making detections and diagnoses much faster. Technology and science will ensure that we can help tackle diseases such as cancer in a much more effective way than ever before whilst doing it in a much more cost-effective way for the taxpayer. Our medical staff are on the frontline of this technological revolution we are currently going through and their work and dedication to the people they care for is second to none. I hope we can all appreciate the hard work and compassion they show on a daily basis looking after the sick and vulnerable. I for one cannot express my thanks and respect to those on the frontline enough.

Individual cremations can be carried out and returned on the same day. Full range of caskets and memorials Equine collection and cremation service Farmers sharps and pharmi waste collection and disposal service

PARTS FOR CARS

WHAT BIRD WAS THAT? I thought I heard a nightingale last night: Its pieu-pieu-pieu and then its chock-chock-chock: A great crescendo reached in pure delight By this defector from the frequent flock. Was this the bird that serenaded Ruth In fields of cereal and far from home (And, hence, somewhat upset)? Was it the same Fine feathered friend in truth That fluttered fitfully oe’r forlorn Rome And soothed one fading poet’s fevered brain?

PHONE 01874 611902 BRAKES I SUSPENSION I RADIATORS

AND MUCH MORE

Was this the voice that captivated clowns And errant emperors? To be quite stark: No, it was not. The creature on the Downs Was probably a whitethroat or a lark. It’s midnight but I have no plan to cease – A draught of vintage might well help my song Achieve those wings of Poesy that live Beyond this mortal lease. Romantic poets learn your birds; when wrong You raise false hopes your friends may not forgive.

Newss from

Yn ddiweddar, ro’n i’n falch o gael bod yn Ysbyty Aberhonddu i ddangos fy nghefnogaeth i grŵp ymroddedig o bobl sy’n gweithio ar gynlluniau i gael cofrestr parlys yr ymennydd i Gymru.

Recently I was pleased to be in Brecon Hospital to show my support to a dedicated group of people who are working on plans for a cerebral palsy register for Wales.

Mae parlys yr ymennydd yn gyflwr sy’n gallu gwneud gweithgareddau cyffredin yn anodd. Gall pethau rydym ni’n eu cymryd yn ganiataol fod yn anodd pethau fel cerdded, siarad a chau botymau.

Cerebral palsy is a condition that can make ordinary activities difficult. Things we take for granted - like walking, talking, and doing up buttons - can become difficult to do.

Nod y gofrestr yw cau rhai bylchau mewn gwybodaeth am barlys yr ymennydd. Bydd yn creu cronfa o wybodaeth am nifer y bobl sydd â’r cyflwr, ble maent yn byw, beth yw eu hanghenion, eu safon byw cyfredol, a’r rhwystrau maent yn eu hwynebu o ran cymryd rhan mewn bywyd bob dydd.

Kirsty Williams

The register seeks to plug some of the gaps in knowledge that exist around cerebral palsy. It will build information on the number of people with the condition, where they live, what their needs are, their current quality of life, and the barriers they face to participation in everyday life. By doing this it will allow services to be better tailored to patient need. There is currently no cure for cerebral palsy but treatments are available to help manage the problems it causes. The register is being taken forward by a group including people with the condition, families and health professionals. The first stage of its development is in Powys and I look forward to seeing the benefits it will bring. That is not the only healthcare cause I’ve supported recently. I also attended a ‘Crohn’s & Colitis UK’ event in the Welsh Assembly to mark World Inflammatory Bowel Disease Day towards the end of last month. It’s estimated that 1 in every 210 people in Wales have IBD, around 15,000 people. The theme of this year’s IBD Day was ‘making the invisible visible’, and ‘Crohn’s and Colitis UK’ also launched a campaign called ‘it takes guts to talk about chron’s and colitis’.The purpose of both is to encourage people to talk about what is often described as an invisible illness, in order to reduce stigma and facilitate discussion as to how to improve services. As ever, if you have any issues you would like to raise with me please do not hesitate to contact me at kirsty.williams@assembly.wales or on 01874 625739.

Drwy wneud hyn bydd modd teilwra gwasanaethau’n well i ddiwallu anghenion cleifion. Nid oes gwellhad i’w gael ar gyfer parlys yr ymennydd ar hyn o bryd ond mae triniaethau ar gael i helpu i reoli’r problemau mae’n ei achosi. Mae’r gofrestr yn cael ei datblygu gan grŵp sy’n cynnwys pobl sydd â’r cyflwr, teuluoedd a gweithwyr iechyd proffesiynol. Mae cam gyntaf y gwaith datblygu’n digwydd ym Mhowys ac rwy’n edrych ymlaen at weld y manteision a ddaw yn ei sgil. Nid dyma’r unig achos gofal iechyd rwyf wedi’i gefnogi’n ddiweddar. Fe fûm mewn digwyddiad gan ‘Crohn’s and Colitis UK’ hefyd yn y Cynulliad i dynnu sylw at Ddiwrnod Clefyd Llif y Coluddyn ddiwedd mis diwethaf. Amcangyfrifir bod gan 1 o bob 210 o bobl yng Nghymru IBD, tua 15,000 o bobl. News from William Powell Welsh Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Talgarth It was an honour to be re-electedTalgarthTown Council Chair at its AGM on Wednesday, 15th May, when I had cause to thank Town Councillors and well-motivated individuals from across our community for their work to develop and promote the town that I call home. The past 12 months have been very enjoyable, with numerous events and engagements. Prominent amongst those was the opportunity, last May, to join fellow School Governors and members of our wider community for the official opening of Ysgol y Mynydd Du by Kirsty Williams AM,Welsh Education Minister, and Cllr Rosemarie Harris, Leader of Powys County Council. In November, I was proud to lay the Talgarth Town Council wreath in our local service of Remembrance, marking the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice. Our newly reinstated Town Hall Basement was a venue for the poignant World War One Ball. Congratulations to everyone associated with that event.

We hosted a special One Voice Wales meeting in January on Road Safety and Speed Enforcement, with Dyfed-Powys Police and Crime Commissioner, Dafydd Llywelyn, several senior Police and Highways Officers. This followed an outreach event with the Commissioner at Ysgol y Mynydd Du, which also served as a catalyst to re-energise the Community Speedwatch Scheme, in which Town Councillors and other volunteers participate. Thanks to all our community organisations for their commitment. From the TiRC,Talgarth Luncheon Club and Talgarth Festival Committee with their decades of service, through to more recently constituted groups such as Talgarth Walking Festival, Grow for Talgarth/ Talgarth in Bloom and Talgarth Energy Cooperative, they all deserve our recognition and our thanks. There are areas where fresh impetus and new direction are required and I will continue to work with colleagues for the greater good of our town of Talgarth in the time to come. Best wishes, William.
