Where did you train or gain experience? I originally trained at Chelsea College of Art. I’m now further developing my artistic practice on a year long Mentoring Programme at Newlyn School of Art, Cornwall.

Artist statement: Two years ago my life and art changed radically. Following a diagnosis of severe Postnatal Depression I felt a calling to return to my

regular practice of life drawing, this time with my baby daughter (born two months premature) carried close to my chest. Her weight and warmth affected both the practicalities of drawing as I found myself standing, unable to bend to the paper, using my hands interchangeably as I breastfed, and opened me up to drawing from a place of love. Being in that moment both mother and artist seeing another human being naked and vulnerable, transformed the process of life drawing into an integral part of my recovery. The imprint that that intensive, six month period left on me is a deep and lasting desire to observe, connect with and capture the shared emotional territory of being human. This is now the place from which I make art.

I’ll be exhibiting new work at The Table gallery in Hay from 27th April to 18th May.

Pugh’s @ Londis Deborah Davies and Alison Greenow set up Pugh’s on 6th April 2009 as a new venture; something they could do together. With Debbie’s accounting background and Alison’s experience in retail, it seemed like the perfect business to take over when the opportunity arose.Their mum had worked in the shop for over 30 years when they bought the business so they were already very familiar with the shop.

Where are you based? We are situated in High Town, Hay, next to the Post Office.

Do you have ambitions to move or grow bigger? No, we are more than happy with our thriving business and see no reason to expand.

How many staff do you employ? We have a great team; our lovely Abi, Alison’s daughter, works for us full-time and we also have seven part time ladies.

What are your greatest achievements in your business? We are still here 10 years on…! Seriously, one of our most recent achievements has been the introduction of glass milk bottles last April; since then, we have sold over 15,000 bottles and have had almost all of the empties returned in exchange for their 5p deposit. Some customers even put their 5p into our charity boxes. Introducing a loyalty card for our freshly filled rolls two years ago has also been a great success.

Also making people smile… sometimes our laughter can be heard down the street! We love what we do now as much as when we first took on the shop 10 years ago and our customers feel like part of our family. We love being part of the community.

What has been the biggest help to building your business up? The wonderful support we continue to have from our very loyal customers and local businesses.

One regret you have about your business? No regrets!

Have you had any embarrassing moments while working? Haha, lots! Too many to mention!

Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you and your business? We became the first ‘Dementia Friendly’ shop in Hay and actively encouraged other shops to follow, and we also offer free deliveries in and around Hay. With the backing of Hay Chamber of Commerce, we were the driving force behind the ‘Hay Voucher’ scheme. We have now sold over £30,000 of vouchers,

which has been a real boost to Hay’s local economy.The vouchers can be spent in 95% of our local businesses, so look out for the stickers in shop windows! The last few years we have also been involved in helping out at the Senior Citizens annual Christmas Party – it is such great fun and one of our highlights of the year.

What have you done in your business to make you feel proud? We are very proud to be part of a great community. We’re always looking out and caring for our customers and occasionally even take customers to various appointments. Knowing people’s routines is very important so as you can imagine, we always check if somebody is ok if we haven’t seen them.

There’s always a chair available just inside our door if people feel unwell while out and about, or if they would just like to sit and chat.

Fun to watch!

Hay Junior and Senior Youth Theatre bring you two fun shows to celebrate Hay Independence Day on Saturday 6th April at Hay Parish Hall. ‘Computerella’, presented by the Hay Theatre juniors at 12pm, sees the Prince of Discs a little more than crestfallen when the royal computer breaks down.The Electronic Fairy Grandmother (Alexa) knows just who is top of the IT class at school and who can fix it.

‘Techno In-dependence’ is set in FTV (Fake TV) studios.

This interactive debate and game show is performed at 2pm by teenagers using theatre, mask,TV presentational skills and includes films made themselves. It is funny, poignant and, most importantly, thought provoking. It is funded by Powys County Council, Integrated Care fund.

At 11am a procession starts at Hay Butter Market (fancy dress optional) – join in and follow on to Hay Parish Hall for the performances. Refreshments are available in between. Whole day deal £4.

Pampered at The Beauty Mill A morning’s pampering is all part of the job! Last month I was invited along to The Beauty Mill for a morning of pampering. The main reason for my visit was to meet Zandie, a new therapist offering appointments each Wednesday. Zandie has loved this area for over 18 years, and just recently she took the plunge and moved up from the big smoke of London. Her previous job was working in various London hospitals to treat cancer patients with reflexology and massage techniques.

I was here to have a Japanese Face Massage. For someone who loves a scalp and neck massage, this is a treat – I was going to embrace every minute.

Positioned comfortably on the massage couch, pillow under my knees, heated pad under my back – how could this be classed as work? The lengths we go to to please our readers!

First was a massage without oil to the neck, a great way to improve circulation to the face. Then a massage to the face, with Camellia Oil. Using various massage techniques, Zandie was able to relax my face muscles. Pure bliss; my mind was no longer thinking of my daily tasks! Then it became interesting – Zandie was pressing acupressure points to balance the flow of energy along my meridians (energy channels) to make me healthier all round, with digestion, respiration, skin, etc. Now came the tapping and gentle slapping: don’t be alarmed, it was wonderful. This was to eliminate toxins.

My verdict: my skin was definitely more radiant. I felt confident with no make-up on. My partner said I was glowing when I returned home later that evening. After a little while and lots of water I was ready for my next appointment... to have my hair washed and blow dried by Philippa Torrance who operates from the salon upstairs, a lovely clean and bright space. Up until May last year Philippa, well known for bridal hair, was freelance, but she now enjoys working three days a week in the salon. Using L’Oreal products, also on sale at the salon, Philippa gave my hair some much-needed attention. Curled beautifully, looking rather glam...what a shame it was a school night and I had no place to go.

The next pit stop was with Sheila to make my nails look pretty with a semi-permanent Jessica nail polish which lasts up to three weeks, probably longer on my feet. My poor little toes had been neglected over the recent cold months. Of course I chose a sassy red colour – it’s my second favourite colour after leopard! Two weeks later I still smile when I catch glimpses of my nails – I really must treat myself more often.

The Beauty Mill was set up in 2000, with Charlotte joining in 2001. Sheila is keen to offer a room to other types of therapists who would fit nicely under The Beauty Mill umbrella. If you or someone you know is looking for a room to rent, please ask them to give Sheila a call. The benefits for joining an already established salon is you complement each other. Sheila and Charlotte’s clients have often booked appointments with Philippa, and vice versa.

The same is hoped with Zandie and any future therapists.

I think it’s a lovely concept – half a day’s pampering under one roof, the appointments running back to back, and all the time being kept refreshed with water or a hot beverage of your choice. And the cherry on top was leaving The Beauty Mill in a freshly-washed car. That’s right, on site you have free parking and a car wash. During the morning my keys were collected and my car washed, then parked right outside the salon door. This is an additional cost of £8.50 and worth every penny. Both myself and my car had been spoilt. Thank you to Sheila and team.

Protecting wildlife for the future

the flower if quite elusive even for us. So, it is a particular delight to find this little flower in a wet woodland as we did up near the Elan reservoirs when this picture was taken.

Perhaps because of its shyness, there is little folklore concerning this plant, but it is a food source for both the Pearl-bordered fritillary and its Small relative (Boloria euphrosyne and Boloria selene). Sadly, only the Small Pearl-bordered fritillary is likely to be seen in the county these days but there is plenty of food available for the larger relative. Small Pearl-bordered fritillarys were seen at Vicarage Meadows Nature Reserve last year.

Viola palustris Marsh Violet It is the time of year for Violets in general but one you won’t normally see, unless you seek it out, is the Marsh Violet. As its name suggests suitable habitat is likely to be off the usual walking routes.

We quite often see the leaves on Brecknock Botany Recording group outings in wet marshy places but

Brecon to Hay Cycle Path The team behind the Brecon to Hay Cycle Path have just received the report from their initial feasibility study, which represents exciting progress for the project. The study was conducted by cycling charity Sustrans and suggests that there are long stretches of the original railway line that remain intact.

Much of the infrastructure along the 25km line is in reasonable condition. Alternative routes have been suggested to bypass areas that have been built on and these will provide a focus for further discussion. The committee will meet shortly to discuss the report, after which they will make the findings available to the wider public. Beans and banter Do you drink too much, eat too much, or turn to food when you’re bored or depressed? Do you need stimulants to get through the day (caffeine) or to close the day off and relax (alcohol)? Do you THINK too much about all that?! You are not alone!

I used to run a nutritional group (‘Weight & See’).

Some of you may be familiar with it. I’m proud of what we achieved and it helped many BUT in the end I needed to break away and return with a fresh approach. What I got RIGHT was to drag ladies off their scales, and to eat well (no lo-fat rubbish). What I maybe got wrong was to aim too pure; perhaps losing some who felt it was unattainable. What I noticed more than anything else? No matter how pertinent the advice, what the ladies really wanted to do at our meetings was to TALK! (Same with my seminars on everything from the menopause to fatigue. Give the bones of an idea, sure, and then let it run. What worldliness, tips and wisdom they share.

Some personal issues are tough, some troubles run deep. I know from experience that it is exceedingly

hard to break away from bad habits if you are simply not happy. We need to fix our lives and peripherals first. If you succeed in overriding behaviour you’re ashamed of or struggling with – it’ll be twice as hard to maintain without self-work. Many of us feel there’s a gap that needs filling; that despite striving all your life, that there is ‘something else’.Yet how many times do we hear of people who lose it all only to discover they’re HAPPIER than they’ve ever been? This discord manifests exactly as described. Binge eating, ‘drinking to forget’, feeling you need extra energy from coffee, tea chocolate, carbs…then stressing when you start to lose your health, so setting off the perpetual cycle!

We need to tune in! My new group focuses on emotional support FIRST and the ‘eating’ part is kept really simple. Plant of the Month Charlotte of Hay PIERIS Pieris are much underrated evergreen shrubs grown for their foliage and small, but profuse, urn-shaped flowers. Flower buds, often red in colour similar to those of Skimmia rubella, appear in winter or early spring and open to produce usually white, nodding, bell-like flowers later in the spring. Pieris leaves are small, lance shaped and dark green in colour when mature. However, it is the young foliage that catches the eye in late spring. In some varieties, such as Pieris ‘Forest Flame’ and P. ‘Mountain Fire’, it is a brilliant red; in others such as P. ‘Prelude’ and P. formosa the new leaves are pink or bronze and work really well in lifting a shady corner. The same is true of the Pieris with cream-edged, variegated leaves such as P. ‘Little Heath’ and P. ‘Variegata’. Some Pieris can grow into large shrubs over 3–4 metres in height in the right conditions, but others like Pieris ‘Little Heath’ and P. ‘Bonfire’ are small, compact shrubs ideal for pots or the front of borders.

Pieris are hardy plants which grow best in shade or partial shade. They require an acid soil with plenty of ericaceous compost added at planting time and then from time to time as a surface mulch in spring.

The smaller varieties do well in pots, also using ericaceous compost.

News from Jackson & Gill Hannah Welling, one of the Optometrists at Jackson and Gill Opticians, is going into hospital for an operation, and likely to be away for three months.

Bowling Club Hay-on-Wye Bowling Club are looking for new members. Have you ever thought of trying a game of bowls? Go along to the Bowling Club on Brecon Road and give it a try.The club in Hay was established in 1987 and offers something for everyone.

For social bowling Club Nights are held every Tuesday from 6.15pm – a fun triples league consisting of 12 ends.

Two Tums at The Three Tuns

During our ‘mini-summer’ in February my husband and I had the good fortune to take a mid-week lunch at The Three Tuns Pub & Restaurant, reputedly the oldest surviving house in our historic town of Hay-on-Wye. Owners Dan and Ellie and Rosie the waitress were busy behind the bar when we came down the stone steps from the Broad Street pavement and made us feel very welcome, offering us a drink, and showing us the Italian inspired menus. A glass of Sauvignon for me and a Butty Bach for Robert.

Rod Lewis of Hay Charcuterie writes the menus and liaises with chefs Gethin, Brandon and Matty. Dan told us that the menu will be changing soon. They like to vary it from time to time. It’s an interesting menu and you can check it out on their website (see advert below). Ex-firefighter Dan and ex-social worker Ellie are no strangers to the pub trade, having met when they were both working at The Pandy Inn, Dorstone, which is the village where Ellie and her family, the Lonsdales, are from. Baby boy Alfie, approx. 18 months old, is a new addition to the family.

After the success of their Gin Tasting evening a few weeks ago they will continue to hold themed events throughout the year. Watch out for their upcoming music evenings, and I see from their website that they’re holding another Gin Tasting event on Friday 10th May. Get the diary out! They are also hoping to elaborate on their cocktail menu.

My starter of King Prawn Skewers (£8) with fennel slaw, garlic, parsley and hot pink sauce (GF) was fabulous.

Nice and spicy. Robert’s Hay Charcuterie Cicciolata (£6.50) consisting of slow-cooked free range pork with white wine, chilli, garlic and crackling, smooth pear and apple chutney, cornichons, dressed leaves and bread

was also nice and spicy. We like spicy! Robert’s main course, Beef Brisket (£13.50), Chianti slow-roasted beef brisket with rosemary roasted vegetables and potatoes was rather good, he said. I chose Chicken Pappardelle (£13) – Springfield free range chicken, mushroom, pancetta and a white wine cream sauce. Very nice. Oh yes, and those of you who know I like hot food on hot plates will know how pleased I was about that!

Pudding: Vanilla Panna Cotta with caramelised oranges for me. Light with a fabulous flavour. A good choice.

Robert’s Affogato with Mario’s good vanilla ice-cream went down very well. The coffee here is excellent, it really is. Those of you who know Robert will know that he doesn’t have an Affogato without a liqueur on the side, and today was no exception! Little did he know that Dan was going to offer us, on the house, a homemade Limoncello each.We felt very spoilt. A huge thank you to all at The Three Tuns.

Talgarth Walking Festival 2019 This year sees the seventh Talgarth Walking Festival, with a programme of walks and talks that will inspire you to book an event. There is a diverse range of walks to tempt you, and the programme endeavours to offer something for everyone.

Former MP Roger Williams CBE opens the weekend with a talk about how our landscape has evolved entitled ‘Law, Landscapes and Livelihoods’. which sounds fascinating. This free evening event is also an opportunity to meet some of the team behind the festival, enjoy a drink at the pay bar and sample some delicious nibbles. So do go along to Hay Primary School on Friday 3rd May at 7.30pm.

High level hikes feature again in this year’s programme as well as gentler expeditions for those happier at a slower pace. The ‘Summits, Stone and Steam in the Black Mountains’ Grade 4 walk with Chris Lewis will focus primarily on the history and purpose of the Grwyne Fawr Reservoir and climb up to the highest point on the Black Mountains for those intrepid enough to give it a go. Geologist Alan

Bowring will this year be walking in the Llangorse area and will doubtless have masses of information about how ice and rock and Romans and Silures affected the landscape.

While the festival focuses primarily on the beautiful countryside around Talgarth there are, this year, a few further afield. The ‘Discovering the Brecon Drovers Route’ that starts from Brecon and ‘All the Views, All the Family, None of the Climb’ on the Begwyns are just two examples.

Each year the festival attempts to add something different, and this year is no exception. Gez and Sue Richards are going ‘Barefoot on the Brechfa’, which sounds intriguing. There is also a fascinating ‘Arts and Crafts’ walk to visit Dunja Roberts’ spinning and weaving studio above Cwmdu to see how fleece is transformed.

News from Talgarth

by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth As I take shelter from Storm Gareth and gather my thoughts for this month’s Wye Local, we are once again moving into the season of Lent. For some of us, this involves abstaining from something we enjoy, and for others taking on a new activity or challenge. Whichever category we happen to fall into – or indeed, if we simply carry on regardless – Lent and the weeks leading up to Easter give us the opportunity to reflect and to gain some much needed bandwidth in the bustle of everyday life.This year, alongside the usual suspects of giving up alcohol or chocolate, maybe we could challenge ourselves to show a little more empathy and understanding for those with whom we disagree. In the current climate of instability and chaos around Brexit, that could serve us all well.

As the lambs start to appear in fields all around us, there is definitely a feeling of spring in the air.

In our community too, I sense this fresh energy in several initiatives which are taking place. Firstly, Rosie Williams, Gaynor Weavers and their team are out regularly in all weathers, digging, planting, litter picking, and clearing up detritus around the town, with their rhythm of Sunday morning workouts and Wednesday gardening sessions. Our town benefits so much from their activities in terms of civic pride and camaraderie. Their wider plans for Talgarth in Bloom will also definitely help to keep us on the map, as spring asserts itself over the last vestiges of winter.

Another exciting development locally is the proposed launch of a Talgarth and District Energy Cooperative in partnership with the successful Green Valleys enterprise and backed by European Union Interreg funding. At a time when a step change is predicted to electricity powered vehicles, the major utility companies threaten to ratchet up energy costs and climate change is widely seen as an

emergency, it has to make sense for communities to help secure our own energy needs. If, like me, you want to back this scheme and find out more, please contact the project officer, Jed Needs, by email to register your interest: jed@thegreenvalleys.org.

As a Trustee of PAVO, it is currently my privilege to be one of the judges in the forthcoming Powys Volunteer of the Year Awards. It is humbling to see the range and depth of volunteering that takes place in our county, by ordinary people, who want to do their bit and enrich the lives of others. I am looking forward to visiting some of those individuals and organisations shortlisted in the coming weeks.

Last year the overall winner was the Hay, Brecon & Talgarth Sanctuary for Refugees (HBTS4R) group.

And, while on the theme of those who run the extra mile for others, congratulations are due to our very own PC Geraint Skyrme, on being shortlisted for the Dyfed–Powys Police #WeCare Award 2019. It is a hugely deserved accolade – and I’m sure you will join me in wishing Geraint success in the final vote.

News from Hay Castle Trust Saturday 18th May 2019

The Lady’s Houseboy One of the most vivid accounts of everyday life in the history of Hay Castle is a memoir of a houseboy to Lady Dowager Glanusk. ‘Within the Castle Walls” is a delightful account written by Bramwell Bradley, who was hired in 1928.

Bramwell lived in Hay with his grandmother and finished school at the age of 14. He recalls meeting Lady Glanusk: “To my youthful eyes, she seemed to be very old. She was dressed all in black, relieved only by a small white lace cap on top of her snowwhite hair. I have never been able to verify this, but I had the feeling that I was the only applicant for the job.”

The memoir details daily life in the castle and Bramwell’s chores, which began at 6.30am and continued until eleven thirty at night and included setting the table for dinner, polishing, lighting fires, sharpening knives, fetching drinking water and coal, gardening, washing up, and chopping wood.

Bramwell enjoyed his years of service with the family, and he was saddened and deeply affected when her Ladyship passed away in 1938. Bramwell was the last person to leave and locked the doors behind him: “Finally I closed the heavy black oak door at the front entrance, and locked it. I stepped out of the deep porch-way onto the main drive and looked up at the long white shuttered windows.

The tall, red-brick chimneys were now smokeless.

The only sounds to be heard were the rooks noisily cawing in the treetops, and the distant noise of a solitary motor car. The castle was empty and still, and seemed to be waiting for the next phase of its already long history to begin.”

News from Kirsty Williams My last article talked about the need to keep our libraries open, in the context of the Council Cabinet’s plans to cut support for branch libraries. Subsequently I published ‘Library use in Powys’, demonstrating the value of our libraries by showing there were more library visits in Powys than across the vast majority of council areas in Wales.

I’m therefore pleased that in this article I can write that plans for funding cuts have been abandoned and branch libraries will be supported, at least for another year.

However I’m under no illusions that the Council has found a long-term solution; I will continue to campaign to protect services in the future, amidst ongoing financial challenges.

These challenges will be very clear if you are reading this around the time you receive your council tax bill for the new financial year.The 9.5% rise passed by Powys County Council is a record increase, leaving Powys’ council tax the highest in Wales relative to average incomes.

In 2018, UK CO2 emissions fell for a record sixth consecutive year and emissions in the UK fell to the lowest level since 1888, outside years with strikes. This is a huge achievement when developing countries around the world are increasing their CO2 output and damaging the planet.

Ocean plastic has been another area where the West can be proud. The ten most polluted rivers in the world are responsible for 90% of the plastic in our oceans, not one of these rivers are in Europe, the vast majority are in Africa and Asia.

We are making real progress in the UK at protecting our climate and I hope that schools and teachers are promoting this to our pupils and not scaring them with doomsday scenarios.

If we really want to tackle climate change we must lead a global response in order to tackle this issue.

News from Glasbury Get-Together Club Our thanks to Penny Williams who provided a very interesting presentation on the situation of many children in Uganda hoping to have an education. For those that have a school it is necessary to have constant fundraising to keep them going. The children make jewellery from paper in various styles of beads and bracelets, which are quite amazing. We enjoyed admiring their work and many purchases were made. A donation was given from the club.

News from Hay Chamber of Commerce Hay is a place where real magic happens.

Next month we will celebrate 42 years since Richard Booth declared Hay an Independent Kingdom, and to mark this the Chamber of Commerce is supporting three days of events across the town from Friday 5th to Sunday 7th April. This will be the third year of Independence Celebrations and will again combine local events with the BookstagramHay festivities.

Bookstagram is an international group of book-lovers who use Instagram to share their love of the printed word far and wide. Last year we had visitors from America, Canada and Europe as well as the UK, who had over a million followers between them.

This year highlights include Desert Island Picks with Jacqueline Wilson, Book Art Workshops with the amazing Su Blackwell, The Independence Party with DJ Max Galactic, the world famous Bookstgrammy Awards, poetry and photography workshops for children and much, much more.

Also part of the celebrations will be the second annual Richard Booth Lecture, which will take place on Monday 1st April to mark Hay Independence Day itself, and on Saturday 30th March The Story of Books will host its fourth Wayzgoose, which will incorporate the launch of Balch & Balch Private Press Bookshop.

Hay Primary School on 13th February 2019, to make local people aware of the ongoing issues regarding funding of the public toilets, funding of the library and the potential closure of the Council Offices. There was an excellent turnout with over 150 people attending the meeting and signing the petition in support of Hay Town Council.

The petition was carried out in Hay, canvassing was completed by local residents and petitions were left in several Hay businesses. The petition received a great deal of support from local people and visitors to the area, and over 1,350 signatures were collected in approximately two weeks.

On Tuesday 5th March several councillors, including Cllr Trudy Stedman, the Mayor of Hay, visited Llandrindod Wells to hand the petition over in person to Councillor Rosemarie Harris, Leader of Powys County Council, during their cabinet meeting, along with a letter explaining the petition and why Hay Town Council thought the petition was necessary.

Hay Town Council would like to thank everyone in the town for their fantastic support and for signing the petition, and we will keep everyone updated via our website and Facebook page.

News from Penyrheol Chapel In the foothills of the Black Mountains above Tregoyd, Penyrheol Baptist Chapel will welcome everyone to an Easter Celebration with Communion on Easter Sunday 21st April at 3pm.

Led by Breconshire Baptist Family Minister Rev. Ifor Williams, there will be Easter-themed craft activities for children and the ever popular Easter Egg Hunt together with an Easter Garden. Everyone will be invited to tea in the Stable following the service.

Now in its fourth year since rebuilding, Penyrheol Stable (within the grounds of the Chapel) has been used as a meeting place for many community groups. This winter local primary schools have come along to special activities arranged by BBNP Education staff and chapel members look forward to welcoming other groups over the summer.

News from Timbuktu This is the hottest, driest time of the year in Timbuktu and the warm winds carry lots of sand, giving the impression

of hazy vistas, particularly in the evening. Harvests of vegetables grown and watered from puddles earlier in the season are complemented by produce brought to the markets from Segou and Sicasso in the south of Mali.

Teachers still have issues of poor pay and conditions, resulting in periods of strike action, but the new bursary project funded by the Small Charities Fund within DFID has started. Sixty girls in three schools linked to H2T have begun remedial lessons and received support for school equipment. Messages from the girls are positive as they see the project as a means to achieve their dream of continuing education and enhanced opportunities in the future.

Hay Primary School students are developing links with the students in Timbuktu, writing letters to the girls and eagerly waiting for the replies which take so long to come. These exchanges help the students in Timbuktu develop their skills in English and give those in Hay an opportunity to learn about life in Mali. The Timbuktu Trail in Hay is leading Hay Primary School to devise their own trail to share with those in Timbuktu.

Hay. Solo exhibition showing a new collection of porcelain. This includes espresso cups, dishes, bottles and lustre boxes together with some large scale platters and vessels made in collaboration with Chinese colleague and artist Huang Fei. During the exhibition we will show a rolling series of images from the residency in China including work in progress, preparing clay, throwing pots, glazing and firing in the public kilns.
