Local Talent: Otherworld Creatures Artist name? My name is Meriel Green, though I tend to work under the name ‘Otherworld Creatures’.

Type of artist? I’m a creature artist and I work in casting, sewing, and most recently, felting.

Range of products? My biggest sellers tend to be my needle-felted creature ornaments and gifts.

The other side of my business is the creation of creature costumes for theatre productions and live events. I’ve done work for the Willow Globe and the National Theatre.

Price range? My felting work starts at around £10 for my little birds, up to £200+ for my full-sized animals.

My costumes depend on size and complexity. A werewolf I made recently for a live event would have fetched around £1,000 at retail, and was the result of months of intensive work.

How long have you been an artist?

I’ve been interested in art all my life. I

have developmental dyspraxia, which made it difficult for me to make notes in classes, so I used to draw monsters in my notebooks to help me focus my mind on what was being said. It was in my late teens that I started getting serious about art as a career.

Where did you train or gain experience? My first artistic training was an evening class at Coleg Powys, because I was turned down to study A-level Art at my high school, and so I took on the extra classes to build a portfolio. I studied animation at University of Wales Trinity St David, and got into practical effects after graduating. I also completed a business course run by GoWales, which was amazingly helpful.

Artist statement: Creating an illusion of life is at the core of what I do. People get attached to my creatures, they give them names and stories.

I think to be able to make someone see life and personality in a piece you’ve created from nothing is truly magical.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Luke Tittley: Hop, Sip & Pump Hop, Sip & Pump is a mobile bar hire business covering Herefordshire, Wales and the West Midlands, set up in 2018.

Why did you decide to set up the business? My partner and I moved back to Herefordshire just over three years ago following a decade in Brighton, lured home by the countryside and family. Initially, I took the role of house husband, looking after my son while my girlfriend concentrated on her own PR & Marketing business.

While I enjoyed being at home I was starting to get itchy feet and after a summer helping my friend Martin Powell at wedding marquee hire company Acacia Marquees, I struck upon the idea of a mobile bar; a business that would fit well with my home life, while allowing me to explore a new challenge.

Where are you based? We’re based in Broxwood, Herefordshire, which is between Pembridge and Weobley.

Do you have ambitions to move or grow bigger?

We’re in the process of moving to bigger premises, which will give us scope to expand the range of bars and supporting services that we offer. We have contacts on the festival circuit, and a team that is full of creative flair, so ultimately want to offer ‘more than a mobile bar’ where we can, including seating areas, specialist drinks and stylistic touches that elevate the whole experience – we’re really keen to work with our customers so that our bar fits with the look and feel of their event.

How many staff do you employ? We currently have a pool of approximately 12 sociable, hardworking and friendly staff who are called upon as and when needed. The quality of Hop, Sip & Pump’s team is essential – we’re a customer-service focused business at the end of the day and how we behave and relate to our clients has a big impact on their overall experience of working with us.

Do you need to do any annual training to keep your qualifications up to date? Having all the necessary qualifications needed to run a bar was

my first priority when I started planning the launch of my business. I have a private licence which allows me to sell alcohol to the public; this lasts indefinitely.

I believe you should never stop learning, however, and am planning to book myself and some staff members onto various training courses in the near future. We already make a mean cocktail, but there’s always more you can learn. I can see this becoming an area we look to become experts in.

A lesson having your own business has taught you? Go for it! Working for yourself is extremely rewarding, being in control of your own destiny, while doing something that you love.

What is your ideal job/client? I love festivals and I have organised some excellent parties – I know some useful people, including djs, artists and performers, and enjoy the whole process; from choosing the music, to dressing the venue, and of course, making sure there are some great drinks on offer! We’re looking to get Hop, Sip & Pump into some local festivals – maybe one day we’ll be hosting something ourselves. Any event that gets the creative juices flowing interests me and I enjoy the variety – we can do very formal, relaxed, themed, whatever a customer wants. I really do love it all – ensuring the guests are having a good time is a great reward!

What is your greatest achievement in your business? Getting it off the ground and winning work so quickly. An idea round the kitchen table turned into reality within six months.

One of our first customers, Hereford College of Arts, is still a regular. We have been providing the student union with a bar every Thursday since November and it’s proving a great success – beyond serving drinks, we’re now in charge of the music and even bar games. A first for the college too, it’s been really well received and is contributing to more of a ‘university’ experience for the degree level students.

What has been the biggest help to building your business up? I have a great group of friends in various useful professions! PR, marketing and graphic design have proved helpful so far, plus some experienced bar people keen to get involved in something a bit different. In general, I know quite a

few self-employed people, so their advice has been great.

List one thing you wish you could change about your business: I wish I had started it sooner!

List five goals on your business to-do list: 1. Expansion, including different bar types, bigger bars and add on options such as creating seating areas around the bar.

2. Variety, getting the opportunity to bring Hop, Sip & Pump to a range of different events, including local festivals.

3. Making the most of where we live. I’m really keen to use local drinks producers where possible, we’re spoilt for choice in this area.

4. Being as green as possible, we already use compostable cups and paper straws, but there’s always more that could be done.

5. Keep having fun! So far I’ve loved every second of the experience, and I intend to keep doing so.

Have any hidden talents come to light since starting the business? Not so much a hidden talent, more making use of the ones I’ve got. My partner and I have always enjoyed hosting, having friends round for dinner, parties and generally making sure

people have a good time. Hop, Sip & Pump is an extension of this.

What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you whilst doing your job? I once had to do some replumbing of the beer pipes under the bar whilst they were live.Thanks to my professional staff calmly serving people up top, I got away with nobody noticing the chaos of spraying beer going on down below! This was my most embarrassing and funniest moment – we still laugh about it now!

Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you and your business? We pride ourselves on not just attending, but adding to your occasion.

The Hop, Sip & Pump team is attentive and friendly, we like to work with customers beforehand to make sure our bar looks the part and that we’re serving the right drinks for the occasion and client’s tastes, where possible steering people to local producers.

Overall, we relish a challenge, so any potential customers out there looking for something a bit special, please talk to us, we want to create bespoke experiences which really reflect the occasion.

A clean car equals a happy mind!

I was in two minds whether to contact Wayne about valeting my car. With two children who insist on snacking during journeys, being a family who like to walk most weekends, and living up a country lane – it’s safe to say my car was absolutely filthy! After the school and nursery run, I emptied the contents of my car into a bag in a panic. I’m too embarrassed to show you the ‘before’ photos but let’s just say I may have found rock hard banana peels, components of Connect Four, undelivered Christmas cards, random Kinder Egg toys, Barbie’s shoes, some loose change and much more! I’m hoping some parents reading this can relate?!

Wayne arrived at my home in his sign-written van. All he needed from me was a power point. So once I’d made him a coffee I was able to leave him to it on my drive and go about my day’s work in my home office. As I sat at my desk working, Wayne was outside doing his magic. Could it get much more convenient than this?

Halfway through I checked in on Wayne. There was a huge difference already. The mats had been cleaned and were put aside to dry, the interior was looking jet black and polished, with sparkly silver trims. It dawned on me that I hadn’t seen my car so clean since it left the showroom eight or so years ago!

By late afternoon, it was time for me to collect the children. Oh my days, what a transformation. If it wasn’t for a few scratches and dents (from my impeccable driving!), it could have passed as a new car. My first thought was, the kids are banned. My second thought was, I really need to do this more often.

I asked Wayne if he enjoys his work. “Yes, it’s so satisfying seeing the transformations”. I can honestly say Wayne did a superb job. Many moons ago I’d go

to a valeting place in Hereford whilst I ran various errands in town, killing two birds with one stone and all that. Yes, it was nice coming back to a clean car but it was nowhere near as thorough as Wayne’s work.

Little things like the change pot – now completely spotless under Wayne’s keen eye. Over time a slight green substance had appeared on the rubber ridge on all my windows: Wayne had got rid of this, whereas the Hereford company never touched it. Wayne even cleaned under the invisible shelf in the boot, where he found further Barbie pieces, an out-of-date map and various other junk! Even the children’s car seats got the once-over. The interior was immaculate. The exterior the same. The company name really is 100% true – Clean Attention to Detail.

Driving over to Clyro School to collect Cariad gave me time to reflect. Yes, I’d have to let the kids back in the car, but no way would I be letting them snack in here anytime soon! I’ve since put a box in the boot for our dirty walking shoes and I have two seat organisers on order. Only this morning a bird decided to poo on my car... Wayne advised me to spray with water and use a microfibre cloth:“You don’t want that getting into the paintwork.”

Wayne does Mini Valets from £30, and Full Valets from £60 (this is what I had). The next stage up is detailing, which is a full clean and valet with ceramic coating or wax coating, and where Wayne professionally machine polishes paintwork to remove scratches and bring any dull paint up to its original gloss – this starts from £100.

These are starting prices, as it depends on the size of the vehicle and how dirty it is. Wayne offers bespoke packages depending on what the customer requires; he can simply do an outside clean if that’s all you need.

The most noticeable feature of the tree is the fluttering of the leaves in even the slightest breeze which is reflected in the Latin name. This is quite noticeable in the distance when approaching the tree. An old name for the tree is Quaking Asp. The leaves tremble in the wind because the long leaf stalk is flattened and flexible. The reasons the tree has evolved this way are believed to be for protection against the effect of high winds and to help with light penetration to lower leaves of the tree. Some suggest that the fluttering also improves carbon dioxide uptake in these relatively rapidly growing trees.

Populus tremula Aspen The catkins shown appear early before the leaves on Aspen trees. Trees are either male or female and can reproduce by forming suckers quite some distance from the parent, so collections are often all of one sex. The picture shows both types of catkin with female on the left, taken at Llangorse Lake.

The wood is white and soft, but fairly strong, and is used notably for making matches.

Look out for catkins in March followed by the fluttering leaves later in the season.

What you can do, as you wait for a brew!

Body Blitz this morning and the Wye Local deadline imminent! Last night I had writer’s block but I’ve learnt: Don’t sweat it, you’ll get your divine intervention at work – something ALWAYS comes up! And so it was! This morning’s session involved: two free-weights exercises which smoothly transitioned from one to the next, (chest flies, then straight up into a clean and press for example) for 30s (seconds) each, then repeat for 20s. As you ask (!): 3 differently paired sets. (Then 1 min of cardio – niiice!)

Repeat all x 3 = 30mins! We were performing ‘Prisoner Squats’ with tiny jumps. After that particular set, during a quick break, we were discussing osteoporosis (OP) and a report out recently that said if you do mini jumps for 30s, three times a day it can help to prevent it. I added to this by saying it’s even BETTER if you go in multi planes and slightly ‘jolty’ to stimulate and keep the bones ‘guessing’, AND to do it as a bone by bone thing (jumping is great for legs but does nothing for bones in the arm’s density).

We then remarked on how easy it would be to do this at

home. And this brings me to the point: it’s actually easy to do a LOT at home. It’s easy to do fundamental, important things simply as you wait for the kettle to boil! ‘Wall falls’ would be easy to achieve, and help to prevent OP in forearms. (Imagine being arms-length away from the wall, pretending to fall into it and stopping yourself with hands) THAT’S what the bones need! You could EASILY and accessibly (and invisibly!) do your Pelvic Floor exercises whilst you wait for the beans to simmer! I do Pilates for the Pelvic Floor and can give you exercises even better than Kegels. Another essential: posterior rotator cuff muscles, sub scapula, and rhomboids. ALL of us need to work the posterior chain and flutters, windmills (imagine throwing and catching a ball – it’s the ‘catching’ bit we need to work on), you could easily do whilst Coronation Street is on!

THE DAFFODIL (NARCISSUS) “Daffodils, that come before the swallow dares and take the winds of March with Beauty” – William Shakespeare.

Is there anything better for spring than the cheerful blooms of the Daffodil working their magic in so many parts of the garden? Easy to grow and flowering year after year, Daffodils come in all sizes, several colours and different varieties, flowering over a long period from January to April.

Coralie Rogers set up ROOM in 2000 with a love of fabrics and interior decoration. The business employs two people plus a talented team of local upholsterers, seamstresses and carpet fitters.

Covering an area of 100 miles radius from Hay, ROOM’s primary customers are residential and commercial interior projects.

Where are you based? We used to have a shop in Hay, and now work from a showroom in Dorstone.

Do you have ambitions to move or grow bigger?

No! How many staff do you employ? There are two of us and good supportive team around us.

Have you won any awards in your business? No, but then again I have never entered for any.

Do you need to do any annual training to keep your qualification up to date? Afraid I don’t have any qualifications for what I do except being in the business for nearly 20 years.

Two lessons having your own business has taught you? I am no good at accounting and I must listen to my book keeper (my little sister).

What is your ideal job? A free rein to be creative!

What is your greatest achievement in your business? Seeing the happy smiles of customers after their project is complete and enjoying good relationships with my team of upholsterers, seamstresses and fitters.

What has been the biggest help to building your business up? A good team of people around me and lots of rolling up of sleeves.

List one thing you wish you could change about your business: The torrents of paperwork.

Have you had any embarrassing moments while working? Assuming a customer was going to rip up a loudly patterned carpet (which they had just had fitted).

Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you and your business? We keep the process of finding the right style for the customer’s house as informal and enjoyable as possible.

What have you done today to make you feel proud?

I managed to walk the dogs before it got dark.

What do you know now that you wish you’d known before starting your business? I didn’t realise I would be lucky enough to be involved with work in unusual and out-of-the-way properties situated up grassy tracks, down lanes and through fields, a really wonderful side of my work.

New season – new members Hay Cricket Club is looking for new members going into the 2019 season. We currently compete in the Hereford Marches league in Division 4 and last season we ended up finishing a credible 4th place.

All league matches are currently played on a Saturday afternoon in a 40 over format and, whilst we aim to be as competitive as possible, the main focus of the club is to ensure that the cricket is played in the right ‘spirit’ with enjoyment at the forefront of everything that we do. We have an active social side and are always heavily involved in fundraising activities.

Going into the 2019 season we are facing a few challenges that have impacted many sporting sides in recent years, mainly on the playing side with regards to regular numbers. If you have ever been involved in playing cricket and would like to be involved in the playing/non-playing side of things then feel free to come along to one of the upcoming training sessions.

We will be starting our pre-season nets sessions at Gwernyfed High School on Monday 4th March from 6pm to 8pm and cricketers of all abilities are invited to attend. These nets sessions will be free and this year we will not be charging any players an annual membership fee.

We will be operating on a pay as play policy to encourage more flexibility with individuals who are unable to commit to playing every week.

Lastly we are looking to relaunch training sessions to implement junior and youth team cricket at the club. Quirky, fun and unique During these cold, dull days in winter, if you are looking for a lovely cheerful morning or afternoon out, I have found you the perfect place to go.

Beautifully Bonkers, incorporating Georgie Porgie’s Coffee Stop, on Builth Wells High Street is a fun, colourful (the shop is bright orange!) and welcoming place to visit.

The business was started by Davine (a well-known local) as a café and shop. Later her daughter Colleen evolved it into the Hair and Beauty Salon, which provides full hair and beauty treatments (see salon offers on the website), and a ladies’ clothing shop, selling accessories and gifts, and a range of Italian free size clothing, nicely made, artistic, quirky, and interesting, with exotic prints and patterns. Then, most recently, Colleen’s daughter Georgie has opened the very popular coffee shop, Georgie Porgie’s Coffee Stop, on the ground floor, with sisterin-law Jess also involved. It’s a real family business!

That’s what makes this place special: it’s not just a coffee shop, it’s not just a hair and beauty salon; it’s a real destination.You can make a real outing of it with the mixture of three businesses all under one roof.

Food, pamper and retail therapy... it’s just a ladies’ dream, really, isn’t it?!

The girls want their customers to feel welcome and relaxed, to come in for a coffee, maybe get their hair and nails done, perhaps a spot of lunch and go home with something from the treasure trove of the shop.

Now to my favourite part... food! Georgie Porgie’s makes delicious fresh and homemade food, using locally-sourced produce. Interesting, healthy, hearty, feel-good food made by Georgie and Jess. They also cater for all dietary needs and requirements.

There is a set menu, which provides paninis, jacket potatoes, sandwiches etc., or there is the everchanging large specials board, which has a delicious variety of options.

There is also a long list of hot and cold drinks, with specials on offer too. Coffees, hot chocolates, teas, milkshakes... the lot! Georgie Porgie’s has a seasonal menu on food and drinks. So at Christmas time, you’ll get Christmas themed toasties, cakes and drinks; in summer you’ll get impressive milkshakes and salads from the homemade salad bar, which offers fresh meats and tarts. They’re fun and inventive with their menu!

I eventually opted for the Mac ‘n’ Cheese served with crusty bread and a fresh salad.The presentation of this was amazing. Colourful and artistically placed on a rustic wooden board. It was extremely tasty, and a very generous portion! Proper comfort food.

There is always room for pudding, so of course I had to sample one of the many homemade cakes that were staring at me on the counter! I had a triple chocolate brownie. The girls here can BAKE! I finished my meal with a gorgeous coffee. The coffee at Georgie Porgie’s is locally roasted in Cusop by Black Mountain Roast. My cappuccino even had ‘Georgie Porgie’s’ sprinkled on the top in chocolate, which was a lovely fun touch. It was an excellent lunch.

I really enjoyed my experience at Beautifully Bonkers and Georgie Porgie’s. It’s got such a great atmosphere. Everything about it is geared to be quirky, fun and unique. Beautifully Bonkers and Georgie Porgie’s is a fun place to go – it just makes you smile!

I even got to have a cheeky dip in the foot spa on Colleen’s professional pedicure chair in the salon... a hard Tuesday afternoon at work for me, I know.Thank you Colleen, Georgie and Jess for a lovely time!

News from Talgarth

by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth At the time of writing, we are experiencing some lovely spring-like weather, after the recent snowfall.

I must put on record my thanks to those Powys County Council Highways workers who went out around the clock to ensure the principal road network remained clear and to keep us from harm. Although this winter has been moderate so far, in contrast to last year’s ‘Beast from the East,’ plunging temperatures and snowy days show our communities at their strongest, with friends and neighbours stepping up to the plate, to offer genuine solidarity and support.

We have had a series of budget seminars at County Hall in recent weeks, which have been a very sobering experience. The extent of savings required by the Council’s overall financial plight is eye-watering and it is clear that there will be an impact on every community in Powys. However, as I previously stated, my Welsh Liberal Democrat/ Green Group colleagues and I will work with others to protect the most vulnerable in the task of setting a budget for 2019/20. The final Council Tax level will be set in early March, but my colleagues and I are working up an alternative budget proposal, which would reduce substantially the proposed increase of 9.5%, as well as safeguarding the future of the County’s Branch Library network, including ours here in Talgarth. We will persevere with our work, but may not have the votes to carry the day, if the Independent/Conservative administration does not choose to back our approach.

Despite Wales’ early performances in this year’s Six Nations Rugby being a little underwhelming, hope springs eternal. Before this edition of Wye Local reaches you, we will know the outcome of the crunch match against England in the Principality Stadium and whether Warren Gatland’s tactics will have paid off for this final England/Wales clash of his career as Welsh head coach. In a matter of days,

regardless of our origin, I’m sure we will unite as a nation to mark the festival of our patron saint, St David or Dewi Sant, and to sing ‘Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau’ with gusto.

Recently, with the backing of Talgarth Town Council and working jointly with our Town Clerk, we responded to the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority (BBNPA)’s call for candidate sites, as part of its LDP Review. We submitted a comprehensive response on the former Talgarth CP School site, calling for the retention of the school field as community open space; the development of the 1976 school site for affordable housing and a sympathetic redevelopment of the former Victorian school, for employment or community use, which respects its significant heritage value and importance to Talgarth. At the same time, we emphasised the urgency of a comprehensive redevelopment of the former Council Highways Yard for employment use, consistent with the BBNPA Policy 37. Whilst these assets belong to Powys County Council, we feel that it is important for us to state clearly, from a local perspective, what our priorities are for these key sites.

News from Hay Castle Trust Making History Digital Pupils at Hay Primary School have been ‘making history digital’ in partnership with Hay Castle. Each week, Year 5 and 6 pupils attended workshops designed to incorporate local history with digital skills.

They’ve learned about the history of Hay Castle, their town and local area, and how to film using iPads, how to interview people for a documentary, and how to create stop-motion animations.

The animations were made using different mediums including plasticine, paper cut-outs and Lego.

First, the pupils investigated different methods of animation and looked at the history of the moving image. They then researched the history of Hay Castle and discovered some stories from its past, including one about a rat in a bathtub! The pupils chose a story and worked in groups to produce short animations. These are recorded and edited on iPads and will eventually be loaded onto the Hay Castle website and Facebook page. They created delightful animations with characters from the castle’s past – the Lady of Hay, Matilda de Braose, Victorian houseboy Bramwell Bradley, and King of Hay Richard Booth. The pupils have shown fantastic creativity in their work and have worked incredibly hard to prepare and produce their animations.

In the summer the pupils will hone their interviewing techniques. If you have a story to share about Hay’s history please do get in touch. News from Kirsty Williams As the daughter of a librarian the future of libraries in Hay-on-Wye,Talgarth and across Powys is of particular significance to me. Our libraries enrich our culture, support our children’s education and open up new horizons to people of any age. They also bring people together as valuable community spaces.

It is for these reasons and more that the Welsh Liberal Democrats on Powys County Council have opposed the Council Cabinet’s plans to withdraw funding from branch libraries. The Council should be in no doubt as to the value of Hay and Talgarth libraries to their communities. Local campaigns and local councillors have made that point very clearly.

I hope that, between me writing this and you reading this, there will have been progress. Monday 4th of February was World Cancer Day. A day that will affect every one of us and fill us with various emotions.We all know of people who have been effected by this vile disease that we all wish to see an end to.

Since becoming MP for Brecon and Radnorshire in 2015 I have at every opportunity used my profile to connect with, meet and promote various charitable and medical organisations working to prevent and treat cancer.

My wife works as a Therapeutic Radiographer and I hear first-hand the damaging effects cancer is having on our society.

I’ve posed in Pink to support Breast cancer Awareness.

Been on ‘Purple Alert’ to change the future for those affected by Pancreatic cancer. Promoted ‘communities vs blood cancer’. A few weeks ago I pledged to be a ‘Bowel cancer Champion. I have also attended countless events such as the Bracken Trust cancer support held annually in Llandrindod Wells.

Last year I was asked by the Royal College of Nursing if I would like to become a Nursing Champion, I of course accepted. Since then I have continued to meet with medical representatives to hear about what can be done to improve healthcare for the people of Brecon and Radnorshire.

In the Summer I met with the Chief Executive of Powys Teaching Health Board, Carol Shillabeer to discuss the progress being made by Powys Teaching Health Board and the investments they are making across Brecon and Radnorshire.

In November I was provided with a tour by the management team at the Brecon War Memorial Hospital.The work they do there is truly inspirational and throughout the rest of my parliamentary term I plan on visiting various other sites to offer my support and take their concerns to Ministers and Government Departments. I also inform my colleagues in Cardiff Bay who have overall responsibility of healthcare here in Wales.

News from Bryngwyn RDA After our winter shutdown, Bryngwyn RDA are looking forward to the year ahead and to continuing to provide pony-related experiences for our riders.

Thanks to a number of generous donations, we are now in a position to complete many of our outstanding projects. Our long awaited mounting hoist is top of the list, closely followed by the purchase of a new pony. We are also able to buy new hats, and a new saddle for Joseph, the pony who joined us last year.

New for this year, we are very pleased to be able to offer therapeutic grooming. Although we have been offering this to a few of our clients who are unable to ride, we have seen the benefits it can bring and so have decided to expand this activity.

Sarah and Sheila will be heading this up, and have loads of ideas to make this a valuable addition to our group activities. All in all, it promises to be a good year ahead.

News from Fairtrade Hay We are in the middle of Fairtrade Fortnight, which ends on Sunday 10th March. This is the annual event when 10,000 campaigning groups across the country, including Fairtrade Hay, celebrate the food producers in some of the world’s poorest countries who are often exploited and badly paid.

Look out for the Fairtrade Hay stall at the Thursday market, where you’ll find out more about our local activities and global efforts to guarantee a living wage for farmers in areas such as West Africa, the focus of this year’s campaign.

Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana produce 60 per cent of the world’s cocoa beans, so a simple way to help is to eat more Fairtrade chocolate, available in Hay shops and at the Co-Op (which uses Fairtrade cocoa in all its own chocolate brands). A rise in demand allows farmers to sell more of their cocoa on Fairtrade terms and increase their income.

Women on cocoa farms have fewer rights than men so the Fairtrade Foundation is working with governments and retailers to improve conditions for women in particular, with the slogan, ‘She Deserves a Living Income’.

News from Glasbury Get-Together Club Our AGM was held on Wednesday 23rd January.

Introduction given by Judith Wilkinson, our Chair, followed by a detailed report from Gloria Gray, our Treasurer/Secretary, on our finances. All committee members said they were prepared to stand for another year if accepted by members. This was agreed by members present.

As planned, this was followed by a 10-year celebration tea. Sandwiches, a variety of cakes provided by committee members, and of course lots of tea and chat.

This was followed by a trip down memory lane with a photo presentation from Gloria, with many photos from places visited and enjoyed and fundraising days, produced by John Newell, our Vice Chairman. Looking back encouraged much conversation and laughter. I think we can say this was a good afternoon enjoyed by all present. Our next club meeting is Wednesday 27th March, 2.30–4.30pm, at Glasbury Village Hall.

We welcome Julie Reed this afternoon. Julie will demonstrate the making of beeswax pictures and

encaustics (the art of painting and burning in, as described by my dictionary... yes, I still use one now and then). Hope you will join us, guests are welcome. Tea and biscuits and raffle later. Small items donated for the raffle always appreciated.

Pneumococcal infections can lead to pneumonia, septicaemia (blood poisoning) and meningitis. Pneumococcal infection can affect anyone, can cause permanent brain damage and even kill. Those most at risk are babies, adults over 65 and those with certain long term health conditions – generally the same people who are eligible for the annual flu vaccination.
