Local Talent: Cheryl Litchfield Payne Type of artist? Animal portrait artist.

Range of products? My range varies. I paint portraits on pretty much anything and I also make many items and paint the portraits onto them.

My products themselves vary from painting on canvas, paintings framed to painting on slate, wood, coasters, memory boxes and much more. I also make clocks, keyholders and wall plaques and magnets. At the moment I am working on two new makes which are brooches and portraits on vinyl records.

Price range? Prices start at £20 for the magnets and go up in price from there. The larger work on canvas and slate starts at £65 and goes up in price depending on size and how many portraits.

How long have you been an artist? I have always loved drawing and painting and have done so since I was a child. However, I have been an animal portraits artist now for five years.

Where did you train or gain experience? I trained at Newport Art College.

Artist statement: I taught Art & Design and Basic Skills for 15 years and I got to a point where I didn’t want to teach any more. I wanted to follow a dream I had. So, I gave up teaching and started up my business.Though I can and do paint other subjects, my work has become much more focused on animal portraits. I started out just making glitzy clocks and camper van clocks. Then one day a customer asked “can you paint my dog?” I thought to myself, I will give that a go, and yes, I could.

That was five years ago. Since then I have painted hundreds

of portraits on so many items I couldn’t count. I now have a massive client base in America, Australia and Canada as well as the UK. I always have a queue. At the moment my queue is running into late February and growing every day. I love a challenge so if someone asks me to paint a portrait onto something unusual, I will jump at the chance. My most unusual painting to date was two portraits on a vintage Silver Cross pram.

The pram was collected and brought to me; I painted two beautiful pugs on either side of it then shipped the pram back.There are times I have thought about going back to a full-time job as being self-employed is not always easy. However, I love what I do. So, for now I will be painting many more portraits.

What has been your proudest moment? I won an award for my small online business in March 2017 at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. The award was called Making a Difference for small businesses.

What would you class as ‘your masterpiece’? I have so many pieces that I love, it’s hard to pick. I am extremely proud of a piece I painted for a customer of two dogs driving a car. It is the largest piece I have painted so far but it was such a thrill to see it completed and hung on my customer’s wall.

Have you any future plans for your work? Yes, in the New Year I am hoping to take some time out to complete about 16 pieces of my own so that I can hopefully have a show in Hay. It has always been an ambition to show my work.

What advice would you give a local artist? My advice would be to stick at it. I never thought I would be recognised or even sell one painting and yet here I am five years on selling worldwide. If you have a dream then follow that dream. Don’t leave it too late and end up with regrets.

What other local artists do you admire? Since moving to Hay I’ve had the pleasure of seeing so many amazing artists. I admire them all but some whose work I really love are Sarah Putt, Sukey Silk, illustrator Lizzie Harper, photographer Billie Charity and sculptor Nick Burns.

Get to really know... Anita Wright Anita is a retired primary headteacher who moved to Hay nine years ago after spending every October half term in the town since 1994. She is currently Chair of HOWLS (Hay-on-Wye Library Supporters) and President of the National Assembly of Women. She also co-ordinates the local Community Speed Watch – she just loves a high-vis jacket!

Place of birth? A rented Victorian house in Islington, London with an extended family. It wasn’t a posh area when I lived there.

Where do you live now? Hay-on-Wye. Marital status? A distant memory.

Occupation? Retired headteacher but fully occupied with HOWLS and other good causes.

Children? Two fabulous grown-up children – James who lives in Hamburg and Megan who lives in Bexhill.

Pets? None, but I used to tell the children at the school where I worked that I had a pet spider called George.

What was your favourite childhood television programme? Bill and Ben, the Flowerpot Men. My cousin used to tease me by calling me Little Weed.

Are you a collector of anything? Yes – good causes.

If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? A Dipper. I wish I had its energy and adaptability.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

To close the gap between rich and poor. Our society is obscenely unequal.

Most exciting thing you’ve won? Two tickets to a Tina Turner concert. I thought I was too old to go until my daughter reminded me that the woman on the stage was older than me.

Two lessons life has taught you? Stay positive and never give up.

What makes you grumpy? Greed, intolerance and injustice.

You’re given one million pounds, what do you spend it on? I’d make sure my family were ok then find a way to open a separate children’s library in Hay. I used to live on a council estate in Wandsworth where there was a purpose built children’s library. It was the centre of the universe for local children and teenagers but the council decided to close it to save money. Sounds familiar? Despite a huge campaign and an occupation we lost the fight – another failure by politicians to

invest in our young people and their future.

Have any bad habits? Not being able to walk by on the other side.

Which bad habits drive you crazy?

Indifference.

Do you believe in the afterlife? No – there’s enough to do to make this one better for everyone.

What book would you recommend to others?

Difficult question as so many good books – but I’ve just finished Grayson Perry’s The Descent of Man. Well worth a read.

Best present ever received? A little granddaughter called Hannah.

List one thing you wish you could change about yourself: I wish I was a bit taller – my nan and mum were Welsh valley girls so I suppose I never had a chance with those genes.

If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? Antarctica – before the treaty banning exploitation of the region’s resources gets challenged by big business.

List five goals on your life’s to-do list: Keep fit and healthy so I can spend time with my granddaughter as she grows up; make time to read more; learn German; walk Offa’s Dyke – and stop going to so many meetings!

Name one thing you miss about being a kid: Roller skating around the streets in the summer holidays with my cousin with the neighbour’s dog trailing behind us.

Name one thing you love about being an adult: Watching my lovely children and their partners make fulfilling lives for themselves and their families.

Have any hidden talents? The Senior Meals Supervisor and I used to surprise the staff and children at school by doing a juggling act with satsumas. We weren’t that good but it made them laugh a lot.

What would be your dream job? I had it for 37 years – teaching. A tough but rewarding job.

What have you done today to make you feel proud?

Taken my 90-year-old mum shopping followed by coffee at the garden centre.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Scaffolding Services Robbie John and Victoria Rodell set up Scaffolding Services, trading as Brecon Scaffolding Ltd, in 1995 to fill a gap in the local market – at the time there were no local scaffolding companies in the area.They set the new business up alongside their construction business, predominantly to service their own scaffolding needs.

As other local contractors started using their services, Brecon Scaffolding expanded and just kept growing... today they employ 27 full time members of staff and cover an area of 70 miles radius from Hay. Where are you based? Three Cocks.

Who are your primary customers? Anybody and everybody that needs structural or access scaffolding.

We work for the domestic and commercial industry.

Do you have ambitions to move or grow bigger?

We are always investing and looking to grow our business.

Have you won any awards in your business? We have been shortlisted to the final six in the CITB Apprentice Employer of the Year awards for the SME Category.

Do you need to do any annual training to keep up your qualification up to date? To create a sustainable local workforce and to keep all our compliance in order, all of our employees have individual training plans that are constantly assessed. Training is a huge part of what we do.

Two lessons having your own business has taught you? Expect the unexpected and don’t take anything for granted.

What is your ideal job/client? Anyone that appreciates what we do!

What is your greatest achievement in your business? Sustainability and survival through good and bad times.

What has been the biggest help to building your business up? Finding the right staff, investing in them, watching them grow and hopefully retaining them within the company. We value every member of our staff, they are incredibly important to us; some have been with us for 20 years!

List one thing you wish you could change about your business: More control. Brecon Scaffolding is a very

reactive business that juggles many customers’ needs at once. We can have up to 50/60 live sites on the go at any one time – that’s a lot of juggling to do!

List five goals on your business to-do list: Finding secure pipelines of work. Continue to find and invest in good local talent. Maintain a happy workforce. Try to enjoy it, if we can’t we are open to offers!

Name one regret you have about your business: Although we love this location and feel lucky to live here, it isn’t always easy to sustain this level of business based here.

Have any hidden talents come to light since starting the business? Patience and problem solving!

What would be your dream assignment? We love anything that is out of the normal remits of scaffolding, especially when it’s challenging and technical.

Have you had any embarrassing moments while working? A few wrong houses have been scaffolded over the years!

What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you while doing your job? Kev getting stuck in gale force winds in a RIB in the Bristol Channel while visiting our job out on Flatholm Lighthouse.

Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you and your business? The amount of emphasis that we place on Health & Safety and doing the right job at all times. Unfortunately retaining 100% compliance is costly and for the client there is no financial value added to a project with the spend on scaffolding, but equally, unfortunately you will probably only get it wrong once as the costs can be devastating and not just financially. A lot of money is spent investing in our employees, resources and abilities to ensure we are 100% compliant and that we get it right to ensure the safety of our employees and of course the end user.

What have you done today to make you feel proud?

What do you know now that you wish you knew before starting your business? It becomes your life!

Inspiring our young people

SHYPP (Supported Housing for Young People Project) is an award-winning project that works to inspire young people to dream more, learn more, do more and become more.

SHYPP works with 16–25-year-olds across Herefordshire who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. They provide housing, training and employment opportunities through their range of accommodation in Ross, Hereford and Leominster.

SHYPP also provides an outreach support service, which works across the county. SHYPP aims to get young people through tough times and make a positive transition into an independent, thriving lifestyle.

“Over the last year SHYPP have helped me in finding accommodation, managing money and helping me to find a purpose in life. They and their media team have triggered my creative ambitions once again. They have shown me the real photographic and cinemagraphic industries, giving me the experience in working with short films and photo-shoots and travelling around the West Midlands.

“Becoming homeless, like a lot of young people today, I didn’t realise I wasn’t doing the things that I used to enjoy and when I tried I couldn’t stay concentrated and wasn’t engaged. But I joined MediaSHYPP and started an Arts Award by Trinity College London and within a few weeks I started to pursue photography again.

“The atmosphere and calmness of the sessions make you feel welcome whatever your circumstances, you can work at your own pace, doing your own projects with as little or as much help as you want or need. After months of no photography, I found myself in an art gallery staring at my own work, being asked for prints and being offered commissioned photography jobs.

“One thing led to another and I started to reapply to university which I had refused to do up to this point.

Building and creating two portfolios of most recent and best work. I attended two university interviews. Then, completely unexpectedly, I was offered an unconditional offer, surprising myself, family and friends.

“The course that I’ll be studying this fall is Marine and Natural History Photography in Falmouth. I’ll be able to study at my dream university, and the course I’ve wanted for the last 3 years. Doing this will help me to pursue my future career working globally with wildlife conservations and film companies” – Michael.

“Suicide. Desperation. Hate. Anger. Loss. Panic.

Loneliness. Scared. Frightened. Hurt. Sadness. Shame.

This is how I felt when I was homeless. I owe my life to SHYPP because there were times when I considered jumping off a bridge because I didn’t feel like a person – I was living on the street, I didn’t have a home or food, I didn’t have money, and now it is all at risk. I got lucky – who will be there for the next person?” – Hugo Sugg, who is now studying at university.

“I’d lost my first job and was trying to find a place to live that would take housing benefit, which isn’t easy. I was sleeping on different sofas and in my car and really felt that I was left on the scrap heap – at such a young age that wasn’t easy,” says Seb Bowley, who is now a full-time customer services partner at Waitrose.

Wild in December

Protecting wildlife for the future

at any time in December are the lichens.

Probably most associated with rocks, many lichens such as this one make use of trees to support them in the light. There are many of these strap lichens to be seen on older trees in our area all through the winter, often making a great display.

All lichens are made up of a close association of a fungus and an alga (or bacterium), both of which depend totally on each other. Fungi cannot themselves grow using sunlight, but the algae that live with them in lichens can.

It is estimated that 6% of Earth’s land surface is covered by lichens of which there are at least 20,000 known species.

Make your own Christmas crackers!

How to make the crackers: 1) Place a toilet-roll tube on the long edge of your paper, in the centre, and hold it in place with some sticky tape. Thread a cracker snap through the toilet roll and tape it down to one side of the paper.

2) Roll the tube across the paper, then secure with three bits of tape along the seam, in the centre and ends.

3) Cut two 20cm x 5cm strips from the thin card.

Curl each one into a circle and place one inside each end of the cracker, leaving roughly 2cm sticking out of the end. Hold the card in place with a little sticky tape.

These homemade crackers are easy to put together and you can place whatever kind of gift you want inside – as long as it fits...

4) At one end of the cracker, twist the paper around in the gap between the toilet roll and the card. Gently squeeze and turn it round a little with your thumb and forefinger, while using your other hand to hold the card in shape. Keep squeezing until the cracker has a nicely defined neck to it. Tie a piece of string or ribbon around the neck of the cracker. Cut off any straggly bits or make a bow.

5) Pop a Christmas hat, a cooking tip or joke, or a little picture you’ve drawn, as well as a little surprise in the open end of the cracker. You could use sweets, little badges, tree decorations, marzipan fruits or mini biscuit cutters – anything that’s small and fun. Twist the open end as in step (4) and tie up with another bit of string or ribbon. Now PULL!

You will need: Toilet-roll tubes Nice paper (you can use newspaper, wrapping paper, comics, book pages, or old prints) Sticky tape Cracker snaps (available in online stores) Scissors Thin card, at least 20cm long Decorative string or ribbon Small but exciting things to put inside the crackers

Defiant Client!

Ever joined a health club? Did you last? Was it mine?!

I ask as I’ve been musing lately on all the clients I’ve taken on over the years, ascertaining in my own mind where things have gone right/gone awry. If every gym client stayed I’d have over 1,400 in by now. That is certainly NOT the scenario, so what goes wrong? It’s my 20 year anniversary this year in health and fitness and I’m fascinated by the science and mind-set of those who stick at it (I’ve seen clients’ pregnancy bumps go to university!), and those who cross the street if they see me! With January coming up and potentially my busiest month, it might serve us both, if I shoot from the hip!

Now I certainly don’t have all the answers but I DO have an awesome system at the club which SHOULD work. Here’s what happens: When a client joins up, after two comprehensive Inductions with weights and cardio machines, I will then ALWAYS say: as soon as you plateau, tell me, I’ll always be there for you to give you more, with brand new programmes. JUST ASK. Oh, and PLEASE join as many classes as possible for the magical cross training effect – and to see what you

LOVE! Plus, hook in to the club’s systems: the seminars for all I’ve got on motivation, nutrition, willpower, cooking, fat loss, and attend BrainFit for a huge ego boost. Come in just ONCE A WEEK, no matter what, just to keep your hand in! I beg you: get off your scales but do Body Composition Analysis with me.

The reality (which can be soul destroying for me): Client runs on a treadmill. That’s all they want. They never try classes, never ‘hook in’. Reject any advice on progress. Client gets bored. They leave :-( Or: Client starts all guns blazing. Comes to everything! LOVES IT! Misses a week. Feel they’ve ‘blown it’. Never see client again. Or: Client loved Ballet as a child. Urge client to come to Barre. Client feels she is ‘too big’ or klutzy to start. Client loses momentum, feels demoralised.

How and when did you get into photography? I was introduced to photography on my foundation course in art and design four years ago and have taken it up as a casual hobby since then, however over the past year I have been putting more thought and effort into my practice.

What is your favourite local point of beauty? There are many places in the Brecon Beacons that are very beautiful, but for me I find myself returning to Penyr-crug just a short walk away from Brecon town as it has a beautiful panoramic view of the peaks of the Brecon Beacons.

Top tip to other local photographers: A tip that I have for other photographers is to go back and visit places more than once. Each time you visit a place try going at a different time of day, a different season or even with different weather, that way the photos you take will be drastically different giving off a different feeling even though you may have visited and photographed that place multiple times.

News from Talgarth

by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth As I gather my thoughts for this final Wye Local column of 2018, there has been a distinct autumn chill in the air, the same chill that we felt when we gathered at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday.

It was an immense privilege for me, as current Chair of Talgarth Town Council, to play my part in the solemn commemoration of 100 years since the guns of the Great War fell silent. Reading aloud the names of the fallen, in that war and subsequent conflict, made me reflect on the sacrifice of so many and on the debt that we owe them. It also reminds us all of the importance of working for peace, in our own community and in our national life, in these turbulent times.

Only a few weeks ago, Cynthia Argent, Margaret Kite and their team were out in force in Talgarth Town Hall to host the seventh annual afternoon tea, which raised £1,787.50 towards Macmillan Cancer Support, making an impressive total of almost £12,000 over the past 7 years. This is thanks to the efforts of all the helpers, who contribute in so many ways to our community. Alan Tandy, Macmillan’s former Development Manager for Mid and North Wales, came out of retirement to express his appreciation. It is the very same spirit of volunteering demonstrated by Martin Draper and the Talgarth Christmas Lights Group, whose hard work over many weeks will be lighting up our town in the run up to Christmas.

Talgarth is currently undergoing significant investment on a number of fronts, and, inevitably, that brings with it a measure of disruption. Many Woodlands Avenue residents are having their windows replaced this autumn, and I am working with Powys County Council housing colleagues and residents to keep the Solar Windows contractors up to the mark.

Meanwhile, the next phase of the Talgarth Flood Alleviation Scheme is advancing apace, thanks to

the continued support of Welsh Government and Powys County Council. The residents involved have shown great patience over recent times and several have commented favourably on the efficiency of the contractors and the quality and craftsmanship of the stone masons delivering the scheme.

Finally, the majority of local residents in our wider area are coping admirably with the disruption caused by the current closure of the A479 Bronllys Road, as Dwr Cymru/Welsh Water press on with their sewerage renewal work. While we have to build in a little longer for local journeys to allow for the diversion, the main lesson for all of us is just how much we take for granted the links between Talgarth, Bronllys and the adjacent communities. I am staying in close touch with the Dwr Cymru team as it is in all our interests, residents, businesses and community groups alike, to keep the closure period to a minimum.

News from Hay Castle Trust

Up on the Roof The Hay Castle restoration project includes the renovation and extension of the stone tile roof. This style of roof can still be seen on a few other buildings in the town, including the Rose and Crown on Broad Street. Rather than using slate, which is not native to the geological make-up of this region, roofers in the past would use specially quarried tiles of local stone.

These are fixed to the roof using wooden pegs, or metal nails. The stone tiles tend to graduate from small tiles at the ridge which can be as little as 8 inches in length to vast stone slabs nearer the gutter which can measure as much as 30 inches. In the trade this is referred to as random width with diminished courses.

On 12th November workers began removing the existing stone tiles and saving them to recycle them on the new roof. The tented scaffolding structure ensures protection from the elements and makes the task more efficient. All the tiles will be sorted and stacked and the roofers will move on to removing the batons and felt that lies beneath the tiles. Interestingly there is very little wastage as any broken or damaged tiles can be cut down and re-used on a smaller course.

A new roof will be constructed over the burnt out east section, so there is a need for new tiles in addition to the recycled existing ones. New stone tiles will be quarried from just beneath Hay Bluff by local producers and craftspeople at Hay Stone.

Throughout November Powys County Council ran a consultation survey on its Cabinet’s plans to introduce a green garden waste kerbside collection service, but remove the remaining green waste banks from the ‘bring’ sites around the county. Residents will have to pay for the service, although how much is undecided, and the waste will be recycled or composted. Not a lot of people know that the council actually already collects green garden waste at the kerbside with the three-weekly ‘black bin’ collection, if one purchases the appropriate orange sacks. But that waste unfortunately ends up in landfill.

This new proposal emerged many months ago and the survey I have been running on Facebook on the issue has provoked a strong reaction.The vast majority of people support the idea of a kerbside green waste collection, but 90% are against the removal of the green waste banks situated in many of the county’s main car parks. Indeed, I know that those waste banks are often full-to-overflowing and that local people in all areas are very annoyed about the suggestion that they should be removed. But it seems, from the recent comments made by the council’s Cabinet Member responsible for Waste and Recycling and the way that his consultation survey has been designed, that he is determined to remove the green waste banks. I suspect he had already made his mind up about this before the council went out to consultation, but I do hope that if enough people indicate that they want the green waste banks to be retained that he will reconsider. We need both collection methods to maximise the recycling.

Now, a bit of good news.There have been recent delays in the rollout of the Welsh Government-funded 30 hour Childcare Offer in Powys – the system by which parents in work can place their 3 and 4 year olds in a registered childcare/pre-school setting for up to 30 hours per week free of charge. So I was very pleased to get confirmation recently from the Minister for Children and Social Care that Powys County Council will begin delivering the Childcare Offer in January 2019 in two areas of the county, including the Gwernyfed High School catchment. Full rollout will happen across the rest of Powys by April 2019.

After months of organisation last month around 70 members of Talgarth Male Voice choir and their partners descended upon Westminster. My team and I took them for a tour of the historic buildings before they were due to sing in a more modern part of

the Parliamentary estate – Portcullis House. Many Parliamentarians and Lords stopped to listen and from here we went for a drink in Strangers bar, where the choir would spontaneously break into song mid drink. Much to the delight of those already enjoying a drink, many of whom joined in and sung along with us.

It was definitely a night myself and the Talgarth Male Voice Choir will not be forgetting in a hurry.

This year’s Armistice Day marked the 100 year anniversary of the ending of World War One. Our community has close ties to the military and it was fantastic to see that all over Brecon and Radnorshire, members of the public including families and veterans turned out in huge numbers to remember those that made the ultimate sacrifice for us. I attended services in Hay, Glasbury and Brecon and also had the great honour to read a lesson and be part of the unveiling ceremony of the WW1 Memorial Bench and Wildlife Garden in the Brecon Peace Garden.

News from Black Mountains Lions Club Clyro Church in Wales School Playgroup has a new shed. When their new school opened, the old toy storage shed was just too old and tired to make the move. The wood was rotting and the mice were camping out in the soft toys.

Black Mountains Lions stepped in and bought them a new shed complete with storage boxes for the toys, and were welcomed when they went along to meet the children, staff and helpers.

Clyro playgroup is a lovely friendly group for preschool children that meets at 9am on a Monday morning at Clyro school. They have a different craft each week, share a drink and a snack, and have a wide variety of toys to play with. When it is good weather they play outside with the ride-ons or the water table, and when the weather is not so good they have the school hall to play in. If your child might go to Clyro school it is a great way for you and them to get to know the school, but because the playgroup is so friendly they cater for children going to a variety of schools to come along for a play and a socialise. Go along for a cup of tea and a chat and your little one can have a good play at the same time.

News from Hay Town Council ‘Shared Spaces’ project Hay Town Council’s Natural Resources Wales (NRW) ‘Shared Spaces’ project has begun in earnest.

The first elements of the grant relate to purchasing portable ramps for businesses in Hay and installing new kissing gates across a 5-mile loop through our countryside. This route will be called ‘Miles Without Stiles’. The ramps and gates were bought with NRW funding, as well as a very kind donation from the Black Mountains Lions of £1,000.
