On page 3 we feature Ysgol Y Mynydd Du Primary School, an amalgamation of the old Talgarth and Bronllys Primary Schools. I have fond memories of Talgarth Primary School, being an ex-pupil. I totally agree that the log in the playground will be missed (although revisiting years later, it wasn’t as huge as I remember, but when you’re a little person everything seems bigger!).

NEW SCHOOL!

Ysgol Y Mynydd Du Primary School Number of pupils? We have 95 children.

How many classrooms? Four classes: Dosbarth Onnen – Reception, Dosbarth Bedw Arian – Years 1 and 2, Dosbarth Helyg – Years 3 and 4 and Dosbarth Derw – Years 5 and 6. We also have Puddle Ducks pre-school, who will be moving into our building soon.

Opening date of new school? We started in our new school on 27th February 2018. Our official opening was 11th May: we had Kirsty Williams and Rosemary Harris, along with many other people, attend that day.

We sang songs and made a special video to show in the opening assembly.

Then the School Council unveiled the special plaque.

List the things that make the new school better than the old ones? The new school is much bigger; bigger building and more children. Spacious classrooms with underfloor heating. We love the MUGA (Multi Use Games Area) to play and do PE. Fantastic laptops and Ipads to use as well as smart TVs in the classroom.The layout of the school: we love the street area with nice places to read and sit to do activities.

Do you miss anything about the old school? We are quite unique in this sense due to Ysgol Y Mynydd Du being an amalgamation of the old Talgarth and Bronllys Primary Schools.

What we miss about the old schools: I miss the log in the school playground. (Talgarth) I miss the adventure playground. (Talgarth) I miss the willow house in the school playground.

(Bronllys) What after school clubs are currently available? At the moment we have after school clubs running every day apart from a Wednesday, until 4.30pm. We have clubs for Coding, Sports, Knitting, Chess, Film, Board Games and Craft, a Parents’ Club for Reception parents and a Clwb Siarad Cymraeg – something for everyone!

Does the site offer any other clubs? We have a great Breakfast Club, which opens at 8am every day. We love using this time to eat a lovely breakfast, catch up with friends and play. We also get to listen to music and dance!

Any future plans for the school or grounds? We are looking forward to the school field being ready, as we have to wait for the grass to grow. Hopefully we will be able to use it from September 2018. We have also started an area for a pond – this will be fun to do some pond dipping to see what wildlife we have encouraged. We also look forward to having an obstacle play area to play on.

Do you like the new uniform and why did you choose the colour purple? We love the uniform because it’s different to any other in our area – this makes us stand out!

How was the new school name decided? The teachers let us decide the school name: we all put our ideas down on paper and then Ysgol Y Mynydd Du was voted the best name. We think this name suits our school because we are within the Black Mountains.

We also got to design our new logo – we love it!

School Council members: Theo, Flinn, Amy, Ella, Kenzi-Li, Morgan, Phoebe, Roxy, Ryan, Karl.

We love our uniform. We chose purple because it’s a mixture of blue and red, which were the old Bronllys/ Talgarth colours.

What would be your dream assignment? Baking bread with Richard Bertinet.

The Bakers’ Table was set up in 2011 as part of the Village SOS project, to help regenerate the Talgarth and district area.The company now employs around 10 part-time staff, in a thriving and popular location.

The primary customers at The Bakers’ Table are tourists, although it also attracts a good number of local, regular customers whose loyalty is much appreciated!

Where are you based? Talgarth.

Any ambitions to move or grow bigger? No. Have you won any awards in your business? Yes, quite a few! The primary one being a National Tourism Award for Wales’ Best Café.

Do you need to do any annual training to keep up your qualification up to date? No. Two lessons having your own business has taught you? The customer is always right, and expect the unexpected.

Who is your ideal customer? Someone who appreciates that we always do our best.

Have you had any embarrassing moments while working? Usually involves flour on my bottom where I’ve inadvertently wiped my hands when baking.

What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you whilst doing your job? Making Mars Bar pizzas for a staff party.

Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you and your business? We are proud supporters of other local producers, and make everything from scratch using quality ingredients.

‘Attar of Roses’

Pelargoniums (or Rose Geraniums) make wonderful houseplants, releasing the scent from their leaves as you brush past and infusing the air with rosy refreshing aromas.

They are believed to deter mosquitoes and moths.

Dry the leaves until they are crisp and tuck into sachets or linen bags to place in drawers or wardrobes. The leaves can be use as flavouring in cooking they go especially well with blackberries in a jelly.

There are many varietes of scented pelargoniums ‘Attar of Roses’, ‘Lady Plymouth,’ and ‘Orange Fizz’. *Propagating them is easy and has guaranteed results – take a small cutting in September to get strong floriferous plants the following year.

The pure essential oil ‘pelargonium graveolens’ is distilled from the young leaves and goes into this Rose geranium room mist, capturing the scent of the summer garden in an apothecary glass bottle.

There But Not There: Remembering the Fallen

This year marks the centenary of the end of the First World War. Over the past two months, as part of a national commitment to remember the sacrifices of the many men and women, Silhouettes have been installed in public spaces around us. These are seated figures of clear acrylic which can be bought by individuals or communities to create a tangible link to servicemen and groups that were lost to the conflict.You can see the first of these within our area already installed in the churches of Glasbury, Llowes, Clyro, Bettws, Cusop and Hay – and it is hoped that you too can place Silhouettes in your community’s schools, libraries or other suitable indoor spaces. Charity Open Garden Laura Matthews is opening her garden at Lions Den, Bredwardine HR3 6DE, on Saturday 30th June and Sunday 1st July from 11am–5pm, as part of the St Michael’s Hospice Open Garden scheme. Laura’s husband Peter died at the Hospice in February last year, and she wanted to give something back following the amazing care and support that the whole family received.

The house was built almost 100 years ago and boasts wonderful views across the river and surrounding countryside. The garden has been enhanced with features that make the most of these views, including a flower arch, a summerhouse and three-tiered decking looking down to the river.

There will be tea/coffee and plenty of cakes as well as a raffle, plants on sale, and some vintage cars on display. For children there will be a ‘find the dinosaurs’ trail with a prize at the end! Go along and support a great cause.

The Hay Makers The Hay Makers gallery in St John’s Place is presenting an exciting new exhibition, Monday 14th May–Sunday 15th July, by a diverse group of six guest exhibitors in addition to new work by the local members themselves. From the striking woodcuts and lithographs of Andrew Waddington based in Cornwall, the animal theme continues with the dramatic ceramic sculptures of Stephanie Cunningham, also inspired by the natural world.

Type of artist? Botanical and natural history illustrator working in watercolour, pen and ink, and pencil.

Range of products?

Watercolour paintings and drawings of plants and animals, bespoke commissions, high quality prints on request, and greetings cards.

Price range? Original watercolours cost from £125 upwards, prints cost less.

How long have you been an artist? I’ve been a professional illustrator for 20 years, and have been drawing animals and plants since childhood.

Where did you train or gain experience? After completing a Zoology degree at Bristol University, I did an art foundation course, then two years HND in natural history illustration at Bournemouth. The combination of knowing a bit about biological function with observing forms in nature works well for me, and means I can illustrate for the scientific community as well as for people who simply love wild flowers and animals.

Artist statement: I am constantly amazed by the beauty and perfect, intricate design of the plants and animals I get asked to illustrate; I feel it’s a massive privilege to be able to earn my living surrounded by wild flowers and animals, and by painting things as diverse as voles, mosses, and woodpecker skulls. I love working in watercolour and in pencil, and enjoy keeping sketchbooks that help inform my illustrations; some of these studies have appeared in The Hedgerow Handbook and The Garden Forager by local foraging queen Adele Nozedar.

I’m in the fortunate position of being able to have exhibitions of my illustrations, and because these

paintings have already been commissioned and used in books, adverts and packaging, I’m able to price my original artwork quite reasonably. This matters to me: I think everyone should be able to afford an original piece of art if they want to.

Where can your products be purchased? My original paintings can currently be bought at Shepherd’s Icecream Parlour in Hay, and requests for prints or commissions can be made by emailing me on info@ lizzieharper.co.uk. A range of my prints and greetings cards are available at Booth’s Bookshop, also in Hay. What has been your proudest moment?There are lots of jobs I’m asked to do that fill me with terror. Not long ago I was asked to complete 13 paintings of different mosses, a subject I knew nothing about. Managing to complete the illustrations (with the help of specimens collected by a local moss expert), then having them approved by a team of botanists, was a real high. I also get over-excited when a range of postage stamps I’ve illustrated come out (I’ve been fortunate enough to produce five ranges for Jersey Post over the years).

What would you class as ‘your masterpiece’? There are lots of illustrations I’ve loved doing, and some I really feel quite pleased with, but none could be classed as a masterpiece! Some of the trickiest I’ve done, which ended up ok, are large landscapes with tons of different plants and animals in them. The other illustrations that give me most joy are highly technical works like a Chironomid midge I did last year for someone from the Natural History Museum; it involved reconstructing larval mouthparts from photos of fossils, and was properly difficult, but I loved doing it.

Have you any future plans for your work? I hope to keep on illustrating wildlife and wild plants for clients.

I’d like my work to get used a bit more in packaging and on products; recently my hops illustration has been used on a mug by local business Mugly.love. There’s always a massive list of species I’ve not yet illustrated and very much would like to; right now this includes the Brimstone butterfly, the Rosemary beetle, a Jackdaw, and the Heath lobelia. I’ll get them done one day, but when commissions come in, they have to go to the back of the queue again!

Protect the Antarctic Most people have heard of Greenpeace, right? Saving whales or dropping banners off iconic buildings. But there’s far more going on behind the scenes. Scientific research forms the backbone of any campaign, then there’s communicating with companies, the public and politicians. Peaceful, non-violent direct action is used and remains as effective as it did in Gandhi’s day.

Local Greenpeace groups around the country help support campaigns in their own communities, and in Hay we have a group that meets in the Globe every month. To maintain independence, Greenpeace will not take money from companies, governments or political parties. It depends solely on individual supporters, which is why they are organising a benefit gig at the Globe in Hay-on-Wye on Saturday 16th June. Doors open 7pm. Headlining is Lonesome Stampede and the theme is ‘Protect the Antarctic’.

Playing detective My favourite subject: nutrition! We’re looking at how food affects the body shape, energy, and health.

This morning I was showing a lad (very fit, early 30s, very clued up) the Bowflex multigym, and he asked what he could do for his obliques as he ‘hates that area’. (He is in seriously good shape but we all have our bugbears.) So I advised him with an exercise he can do on the Bowflex (Woodchopper), with Freeweights (Oblique squeeze), and one with some heavy duty resistance bands using the rail outside (reverse rotation). But then I asked him “What’s your nutrition like?” Pretty good, he answered. “It’s just that carbs and sugars can show in this area,” I advised. The panic rising in his eyes, he explained he LOVES pasta and didn’t want to forego it! I advised: “You don’t have to let it go completely, just use it wisely (such as post-workout), but bring it right down and use good fats and oils to satiate instead, LOTS of veggies and adequate protein. See how that goes! It’ll work and I MIGHT see if he wishes to hone it further. A few weeks ago I did a seminar

on carbs – how much we need at individual level, (some thrive on Ketogenics successfully and some suffer and feel really ill or no energy on it, and can do well on ‘good’ carbs). The first question I asked was how they’d FEEL in terms of energy after certain breakfasts (high, mid and low carb). MANY in the group had no idea how they’d feel! One morning I had a course in Manchester. I got up early (5am).

Really awake! Thought I’d better eat to keep me going. All I had in was a roll so I had that with jam. (I know, I know!) An hour later I could have honestly fallen asleep at the wheel! It’s interesting how foods affect us. Example: if you get a headache, don’t just mindlessly reach for the paracetamol. Try water first, and ask what did you eat that day/week. It’s this kind of thing we need to start noticing. In fact nowadays I don’t really advocate any particular protocol – only that a client starts to play detective and eat mindfully. We have one life only!

Idyllic and delicious at The Bridge Inn, Michaelchurch Escley We felt extremely lucky to visit the award-winning 16thcentury Bridge Inn in the small village of Michaelchurch Escley for supper one Friday evening in May. If you haven’t been yet then you really must. It’s a gem of a hostelry.

We were given the most friendly welcome by owner Glyn Bufton, and our first port of call was to sit outside with our ‘Hill Billy’ gin and tonics. The Bridge Inn is also home to Black Mountains Botanicals and this gin is one of their products. We are quite partial to the odd G&T and this was superb! To accompany our gins we tried some the nibbles. Heavenly homemade bread, which came with olive oil and balsamic vinegar and some olives and anchovies.

Starters here consist of nibbles, served tapas style to share, and range from £1.50 to £4.75.

We sat on their fabulous extended and improved terrace It’s achingly lovely, with willows weeping down the footbridge into the babbling Escley brook; the most idyllic setting in which to enjoy a drink before indulging in the gastronomic delights served up by new chef TJ, who originates from Singapore.

The menu came. Always seasonal and always locally produced. Everything was so tempting. Eventually Robert chose the Confit Duck which is slow cooked duck leg served with sweet pickled red cabbage, white bean and chorizo cassoulet and steamed vegetables. I went for the Moroccan Lamb, a slow roasted shoulder cooked in Moroccan spices served with steamed rice. It was all absolutely delicious.

We ate our main courses in the restaurant which overlooks the brook. One can choose to eat in the bar where bines of hops adorn the beams. I love the rustic atmosphere, laid-back but professional.

To accompany our food we ordered a bottle of rather nice Navajas Rioja. Main course prices vary

from £13.25 for a pulled pork burger up to £16.75 for the Seabass. A little bit more for the steaks. They also cater well here for children, vegetarians and allergy sufferers.

I was replete after the main course, but Robert still had that ‘area of tummy reserved for puddings’ and ordered a ginger nut, raspberry and white chocolate cheesecake. The waitress brought two spoons, I wonder why? Well, I did succumb, but just two small spoonfuls. The flavours were fabulous. All deserts are £5.95. Affogatos with or without liquor are also available, as is dessert wine, coffee and all sorts of herbal teas. I’m sure they could come up with builder’s too…

Herefordshire born and bred Glyn and his beautiful Colombian wife Gisela have made this place unique.

It’s such a treat to eat here. They look after you like royalty and nothing is too much trouble. I know of nowhere else quite like it.

Why not make a night of it and book to stay in their old but extremely smart farmhouse B&B about a furlong up the road, or in one of the two romantic yurts in the grounds of the inn. There are also camping and camper van facilities. I can’t think of anyone I know who wouldn’t like it here.

News from Talgarth

by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth As I draw together my thoughts for the June edition of Wye Local, I am struggling to believe that we will soon have reached the mid point of another year. Football and rugby are giving way to cricket and tennis and the meadows are being shut up for another year’s crop of hay. The May Day Bank Holiday weekend is now just a memory – but it provided a glorious backdrop to several community events, including the Talgarth Walking Festival, the Mill Race and the Talgarth Charity Boat Race. Sincere thanks are due both to the respective organisers and to everyone who lent their support and helped to ensure their success.

This past month has seen the Annual General Meetings of both Talgarth Town Council and Powys County Council. In the former case, we are greatly indebted to the outgoing Mayor, Cllr Jacqui Wilding, as she stands down after two years of distinguished service. It is a great honour to succeed her as Chair of Talgarth Town Council at a vital time in the development of our town. I am delighted to have two such able deputies in Cllr Phil Lewis and Cllr Pip Turner to share these duties in the ensuing year, with the invaluable support of our Town Clerk, Mrs Josephine Rumsey, now well into her fourth decade of public service.

One of my first mayoral duties was to attend the opening of Ysgol y Mynydd Du, the new primary school for our area. The plaque was unveiled by our local Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member, the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Kirsty Williams, in the presence of Powys County Council Leader Cllr Rosemarie Harris. It was a happy, relaxed occasion, and guests from near and far were made to feel welcome. The positive learning environment of the new school is evident for all to see and the co-location of Talgarth Library, which is enjoying a major surge in footfall, makes it a genuine community school.

One issue which now has to have priority is the fate of the former school, youth and community centre and school sports field. It is a significant public asset and I am calling for it to be subject to a comprehensive development brief, involving Brecon Beacons National Park Authority, Powys County Council,Talgarth Town Council and crucially the local community. It was my privilege to help scrutinise the Wellbeing of Future Generations (Wales) Act as it was piloted through the National Assembly for Wales in 2015/16 by the late Natural Resources Minister, Carl Sargeant AM. The decisions that lie ahead in terms of this key site must be informed by the principles of the Act. The recent public presentation on the potential Black Mountains College proposals attracted over 100 people to Talgarth Town Hall and the meeting was widely praised for its inspiration and vision.

Kirsty Williams AM introduced project promoters Owen Sheers and Ben Rawlence, who both spoke with conviction about the potential benefits of the College. It was good to be joined also by my friend and fellow County Councillor Emily Durrant, who represents Llangors Ward for the Green Party.

The coming weeks and months will be crucial to determining the project’s viability.

News from Chris Davies -Your local MP

In recent months Powys County Council have been hit by two extremely poor reports in how they run both Children and Adults services.These reports came as a big shock to many and the current council have had to work extremely hard to resolve the situation.

I have ensured that I meet regularly with the senior executive at Powys County Council and just last week I met with them to receive my latest update on the improvements being made to Children and Adult services.

I was assured that services have improved and that the most recent reports highlighted the improvements being made by the new Conservative/Independent Council.

With all of this going on in the local press it is easy for most of us to think that Powys County Council are doing a poor job. But this could not be further from the truth. Over the last year we have seen recycling facilities re-open and more recently, we have seen a number of new primary schools open right across Brecon and Radnorshire in Llyswen, Hay and Llangorse.The new facilities are second to none and will benefit our youth for generations to come.

It’s been a busy month in both Westminster and Brecon and Radnorshire, here is a little flavour of what I have been up to.

Continuing with positive news for our area. In April I along with the Department for Work and Pensions organised two events, in Brecon and Llandrindod Wells. The aim of these events was to link local employers with third sector organisations who help marginalised unemployed groups to get back into the workplace. The event also updated employers and third sector organisations on the benefit changes with Universal Credit, which comes to Brecon and Radnorshire in October.

Employment is a vital part of a healthy and prosperous economy and in Brecon and Radnorshire we have extremely high levels of employment. Last month I visited various businesses across the constituency.

From hotels, restaurants, farms and manufacturing firms who employ large numbers of local people. I see a large part of my job in Westminster as working to put Brecon and Radnorshire on the map. We live in a beautiful part of the world and it’s an area I want to see thrive from tourism and external investment.

Welsh food - I recently had the great pleasure of attending an event in the Senedd called a “Celebration of Welsh Food� and there is much to celebrate. We are lucky to produce some of the best food in the world here in Wales, and that is especially true here in Brecon and Radnorshire.

It is important we try to support our local food producers wherever possible. Eating local means fewer food miles, an improved rural economy, and the knowledge that the food will be produced with some of the highest animal welfare standards anywhere in the world. So please, wherever possible, buy Welsh.

Plastic waste - Eating local also means less waste. A few months ago I wrote a column in the Brecon and Radnor Express about reducing the amount of plastic that enters our oceans and environment. Since that column I have visited two fantastic shops in the constituency that are helping to reduce the amount of waste we produce.

La Vida Verde on Park Crescent in Llandrindod and Natural Weigh in the Old Corn Exchange, Crickhowell are, potentially, showing us the future of plastic free shopping. So please go along (with your own containers) and support them. Last week I invited the Welsh Government Minister for Environment to Natural Weigh and she was very impressed by what she saw.

New schools - Following on from the excitement of breaking the turf at the site of the new Brecon High School, in the last few weeks, I have had the good fortune to attend the official openings of four of the new primary schools in the Gwernyfed catchment area.The opening of a new school is always one of the highlights of my job as Cabinet Secretary for Education.The excitement on the faces of the pupils, teachers, and the wider community were on show for all to see and I wish them well in their new surroundings.

News from Glasbury Get-Together Club Our trip in April to Bristol to see the SS Great Britain was a great success. Really interesting and enjoyable.

After leaving the coach the ‘essentials’ had to be located, and then we all had some well needed refreshments.We were advised to start our visit with the Brunel museum which is full of artefacts and historical information. This aided the enjoyment when we were ready to go onto the ship. A well recommended day out.

Our club meeting will be on Wednesday 27th June, 2.30–4.30pm at Glasbury Village Hall, when we have a local lady, Judi Bunn, to talk about her experiences, entitled ‘A Life Behind the Camera’. From my telephone conversation with Judi I think this will turn out to be an enjoyable afternoon. Hope you will be able to come along. Guests welcome. Tea and biscuits and raffle later.

News from Gwernyfed High School Ieuan Phillips won the Sport Young Ambassador of the Year (2017) for increasing participation in South Powys, within the YA Wales region. Ieuan plans and carries out many weekly, termly and community activities so that every participant tries a new sport and has a go, but with emphasis on having fun through activities whilst providing that competitive edge for all, young and old!

News from Hayfield Organic Garden Hayfield Garden is a beautiful space of about half an acre where a small group of local volunteers plan, plant and maintain this unique place. It can be found on the road from Hay to Clyro or vice versa. In return for time spent in the garden volunteers get the pleasure of growing and harvesting their own organic produce.

The garden is open every week on Wednesday and Saturday mornings from 10am to 1pm for anyone to get involved in any way they can.This could be watering, weeding, picking soft fruit.This year we really need help with some mowing and digging. If we can get some more volunteers we hope to have a regular sales table available; this will mean that any surplus produce can be sold and the proceeds recycled into the garden. So

News from Hay2Timbuktu Funds for the new toilets in our three partner schools are growing and with efforts during Hay Festival we hope to reach our target and start building.This will fit in well with the schools break in July, so that the girls return to new toilets in the next term.There is still time to contribute on www.Hay2Timbuktu.org The girls in the bursary project continue to do well and we hear regularly from teachers with messages from the girls.The project has made a huge difference to the lives of girls in Timbuktu, many continuing to further education, professional training and into work. All at the schools speak positively about the project and the relationship with Hay, hoping to continue and build on this work.

One of our teacher friends was recommended by the Mayor of Timbuktu for a postgraduate opportunity at the university in Bamako. Ali was successful in the exam and is studying a postgraduate course in English. Sharks’ teeth. Chondrichthyes are a class that covers 400 million years of history, from Devonian to present; they have a wholly cartaginous skeleton and therefore shark history is limited mainly to the study of teeth and occasional spinal sections, this since uncalcified cartilidge is seldom fossilised.
