Julie Goodridge Healing Julie Goodridge has been working with energy for 17 years. Prior to this s​he had an 11-​year career i​n d ​ irect selling, work​ed​in the mental health sector​for 10 years, ultimately​managing a care home for 13 individuals experiencing severe mental health issues,​for 5 of those. She also ​worked in scientific research at Imperial College, London,​for two years,​after completing two science degrees, in ​B​iochemistry/Physiology​and​ Infectious ​D​isease ​Ep ​ idemiology. Her own ​personal development​quest​led her to be attuned to Reiki in 2001. Its impact on her was immense and she obviously had an affinity for energy work. She began teaching and in her own ​desire​for further self-development has explored ​Vortex ​H​ealing and ​latterly, for the last 14 years, the Heart Field, an energetic field now known to science.

Where are you based? I work from home in Painscastle and also at Hereford Centre for Natural Health.

Do you have ambitions to move or grow bigger? I am in the process of developing short workshops which will take place in Hereford, and also of expanding into other areas of work, such as with animals. I work with my own but have not promoted that side of the business yet. Buildings are also a potential avenue as they hold energy, and clearing spaces with energy can make a huge difference to how a building feels.

Only that I absolutely LOVE what I do and even though it is not what I expected to be doing, helping create some change gives me a lot of satisfaction. Things that we least expect can change sometimes can, and that is just very amazing!

Sum up your business in five words: Real, transformational, passionate, rewarding and, sometimes, magical!

Do you need to do any annual training to keep qualifications up to date? Continuing professional development is important. I work with the energy every single day and also with other therapists. I lost my father 15 months ago and didn’t work for 6 months afterwards. I went into bereavement counselling for a year and also worked with a brilliant cranial osteopath who released a lot of physical pain from my back – basically I was storing all my grief there and could not get to it on my own. I am also currently working with an EMDR therapist addressing a lot of fear to do with horse riding. I came off a horse 7 years ago and sustained a life threatening head injury which took three years to fully recover from. I just need to face it head on and am pleased to say there is already a difference. It would be totally irresponsible to work with other people if not regularly addressing my own issues.

What is your greatest achievement? Each session is unique and when something significant releases for a

New in Town: Thomas Wallis of The Tree Surgery Where are you based? We work in a 25-mile radius of Winforton, where I live.

Why the Hay area? We have recently bought 10 acres of woodland in Winforton which will eventually be run as a sustainable forestry enterprise. My wife and I love and have been visiting this area for many years, so when we found the woodland we decided to buy it and move here with our two young children.

Why did you decide to set up this business?

During the 1990s I worked for The National Trust at Dyrham Park, where I received training and gained qualifications in forestry. During my time there I watched some tree surgery contractors work with chainsaws at height with incredible skill and artistry: I realised this was for me and I started planning to give it a go myself. I spent the next year at college, and practised my newly-learned skills with a tree surgery company. Shortly after leaving college I decided to set up on my own. The Tree Surgery was set up in Bath in 1999 and The National Trust became one of my clients!

What are some of the challenges you encountered?

Tree surgery work is all about overcoming challenges but one job that stands out is when we had to remove some large limbs on a Cedar of Lebanon, directly over a large and newly restored Victorian greenhouse. I trusted my team and knew we could rope down the limbs themselves without causing any damage, but the problem was that there were hundreds of fist-sized cones on the limbs in question, threatening to punch holes in the greenhouse glass as soon as we tried to remove a limb! We found a large tarpaulin, which we suspended over the greenhouse, but whichever way we tried to position it there were always panes left unprotected. In the end we chose what we thought was the best position for the tarpaulin and roped down the first branch. Of course, the two panes which were unprotected received direct hits, much to our dismay! But it could have been so much worse.

What do you wish you had known before you started?

Any setbacks or problems you encounter may seem like a nightmare at the time, but there is always something to learn or be gained while overcoming them and it always works out in the end!

Describe a typical day in your business: A typical day would be to turn up, hopefully start with a cup of tea and then get to work. Common tasks we carry out are: reducing the height of trees while leaving them with a good shape and natural look, or dismantling a tree from a rope and harness which cannot be felled conventionally. In both cases we may use rigging equipment (ropes and pulleys) to get the job done.The branch wood is processed using a towable wood chipping machine and the timber is cut up to a length suitable for firewood. We leave the work site tidy and pride ourselves on doing high quality work with minimal damage to lawns, etc.

Local Talent: Lucy Gold

Local photographer Lucy Gold is currently exhibiting at the Globe at Hay in a joint exhibition with fellow photographer Adam Tatton-Reid (ends Tuesday 27th March). Pop in and see her photographs there in their full glory!

How long have you been an artist? I’ve had an interest in photography since the age of 15 or so, watching my brother and my dad who are hobbyist photographers.

They gave me my first 35mm camera for my 16th birthday and my passion grew from there.

Where did you train or gain experience? Photography wasn’t really a subject when I was in high school so I went to university and studied a foundation art course with the knowledge I wanted to do a degree in it. From there I studied Photography for Fashion & Advertising at the University of Wales, Newport, now called the University of South Wales. It gave me a good foundation in all kinds of advertising photography and provided an outlet for my creativity as well as making some friends I still have today. Then I came home to the Brecon Beacons and got a job with Brecon Beacons Holiday Cottages as their full time resident photographer and I’ve been working here for 5 years.

I have a mentor, Paul Campbell, who is an advertising photographer in London and has over 50 years’ experience, which has been invaluable. There is only so much university can give you without you going out into the world and putting it to practice.

Artist statement: My father was a mountaineer, we lived in the foothills of the Himalayas and now I live in the old hills of the Brecon Beacons. So, I have the mountain air coursing through my blood. When you grow up with something as a way of life, you might not really appreciate its beauty. It is only since being an adult in this environment that I have really opened my eyes to my surroundings, challenging myself to climb more, to find out what is around the next corner.

The weather in the Brecon Beacons National Park is constantly changing, changing the landscapes and the colours. My favourite time of year is the autumn and winter. The colours that carpet the hills are reds, rich yellows, deep greys and purples; the bracken, gorse, sky and heather. When it snows, it sticks in the ancient face of the mountain, the crags, the heather and the sheep’s fleece.

Even now the mountains are crumbling, slowing, smoothing out, you can see it in soil patches where the peat has fallen away leaving mini cliffs here and there.

The banding of the peat bog and the red sandstone are the colours of the Beacons.The showy, green summer coats of the mountains are spectacular, but for me, it isn’t until the hills are under their snowy shrouds that you get to see the real, moody and majestic colours of the Brecon Beacons. It is a great place to run wild and be alive in the mountains with no one around.

Have you any future plans for your work? I love the landscape work I’ve shot and I’d love to get back to shooting portraits and people, maybe finding a way of combining the two. But what I love most of all is working with a brand or company on a personal level and making something together that we can be proud of, which is what I get from working with a company like Brecon Cottages. I also love writing, and have had some of my photography published with mini essays by a couple of magazines online. I hope this year that I have an opportunity to accomplish more of this.

What advice would you give a local artist? This advice is for myself too: to be a morning person. That golden hour in the morning is the best part of the day and no one else is around, the mist is in the valley, the sun is low and the shadows beautiful. Plus, you feel you can get so much done. I’m still working on it.

What other local artists do you admire? In terms of landscape photographers, Alyn Wallace is amazing. His photography makes Wales look like it is in another world! He is particularly good at Astro Photography and does workshops on photographing the night sky.

Adam Tatton-Reid is also up there as someone who has no sleep and takes beautiful landscapes.

Get to really know... David Pitt David came to Hay-on-Wye 12 years ago to visit his daughter and son. He decided to open a fossil and crystal shop in Broad Street, similar to one he already owned in the USA. He called it ‘The Hour Glass’ as a reminder of the immense journey in space and time of the history of our world.

David has been operating in the fossil business for over thirty years and has contacts with dealers and collectors across the globe. He will be celebrating his 88th birthday this month and considers himself just a youngster in the world, always learning, sharing and curious about life, fossils, mineral specimens and art.

A visit to his shop will transport you through so many ages in time from ammonites, trilobites and crystals to the mighty fossil of the Mosasaurus jaw and Mammoth teeth – an educational, memorable and fun experience for the whole family.

Place of birth? Huntingdon.

Where do you live now? Hay-on-Wye. Marital status? Young, free and single.

Occupation? Owner of The Hour Glass fossil and mineral shop.

The new Brecknock Museum The new Brecknock Museum, Art Gallery and Library, named ‘y Gaer’, is at last becoming a reality and has a completion date and ‘soft’ opening in December this year, with a grand opening the following spring, 2019. The Brecknock Society and Museum Friends is now working with other local partners to raise additional funds to enhance the visitor experience.

An interpretation element will draw together information relevant to the key exhibits and themes of the Museum & Art Gallery and present this interactively to visitors through tablet-based terminals located alongside the relevant displays.

Garfield Weston Foundation has just awarded a grant of £50,000, which means that this project can start now with the purchase of computer terminals and necessary software.

The Interpretation and Activity Group run by the Museum & Art Gallery met frequently 3–4 years ago to help the Museum staff and the professional designers, Design Map, to decide what stories to tell.

It has been meeting again recently to fine tune an experience which the visitor and resident alike will find exciting! The museum has over 30,000 artefacts so the displays will only contain a fraction of what is available. It is hoped that the new online database will go live soon after opening so that these artefacts can be viewed by appointment.

‘Y Gaer’ will comprise a large Local History Room and a Temporary Exhibition Gallery. One of the first exhibitions in the latter space will be an Adelina Patti commemoration (September 2019).

New start for PSM Outdoors

Sadly my retail shop in Castle Street, Hay, will be closing this March. I would like to thank all of our customers for their custom and support during the last 20 years at this address.

It seems a long time since I opened up in 1998, providing electrical goods and services. With a keen interest in outdoor activities, especially canoeing, camping gear and watersports equipment were soon added and the range became both extensive and exhaustive.

I have been fortunate to have the support of my family and to have worked with some great people over the years. Both my teenage children worked their holidays in the shop, and they have gone on to become successful in their own right.

I still get a buzz finding the right gear for customers or introducing them to paddlesports on the beautiful River Wye. Not retiring just yet...

From a nutritional point of view I offer monthly seminars which help to guide them to a healthier lifestyle. I’m not into ‘dieting’, counting calories, jumping on the scales, or giving yourself a hard time if you consume something delicious because you can’t resist it! Drop all that! If you have the odd Cheesecake and you’re happy with where you are in terms of energy, health and body shape – you have the answer! Crack on! I get bored of any chat about ‘diet or weight’!

And if you’re a bigger shape and perfectly happy I am genuinely delighted for you (in fact I think that’s brilliant).There are many reasons why we gain or lose

weight anyway – it’s not just gluttony or boredom as many might believe. Often it’s simply not ‘listening in’ or not knowing what to do even if you’re listening! All this said – I have devoted 20 years of my life to this cause and if you are suffering in any way (health) or just NOT happy where you are, but are prepared to simply eat mindfully (no silly shakes or bars and no counting things) – NOW I get interested! Thing is – it can get disheartening as I’ll take a group through a course to get us all fit and healthy and along the way implore clients to do some detective work (work on what food groups suit them and don’t – and what works in training along with what they enjoy, or can do, due to injuries)... And it’s hard because it takes a little time and they want results NOW! To this end we now have a questionnaire that will take just 10 minutes to do but will yield EXACTLY what you need at an individual level. Please see the ad below.

How to shop local with the Golden Valley Food Assembly What a great idea a Food Assembly is – let’s lessen our trips to the supermarkets and support local producers in 2018! It saves time, money and the environment.

Peterchurch in the Golden Valley has its very own Food Assembly. The Assembly is part of a UK-based organisation that supports producers in local areas.

In Herefordshire we have many fabulous producer/ makers and St Peter’s Church in Peterchurch hosts the Food Assembly every Thursday, 4.30pm–6.30pm.

Here’s how it works: you sign up to the very easy online market base as a customer. This is a free-to-use online shop, where you can order from a wide range of local producers who sell everything from fresh meat, vegetables and dairy products to soap and hand-crafted items for everyday living.

When you’ve ordered, you pay for your items through the secure online payment system; then pick them up from the collection point – St Peter’s Church, on

Thursdays. All the producers assemble here with your things ready to take away – the added bonus being that you don’t have to drive all the way to a supermarket and you come away with very little plastic or none at all!

Truth and Lies: a short story collection by James McComb Local author James McComb was born in Scotland, raised in England and America, and currently lives in Wales.

They certainly leave you guessing...

I just wonder whether some of these intriguing stories come from his own ideas or whether they come from some of the people who he has met. If they are people he has met, well, there are certainly some I wouldn’t want to meet!

The author has an elegant and intellectual style of telling his mysterious stories, and they remind me somewhat of my old CD playlists set to play on ‘random’.You look forward to what’s coming next!

The author’s enigmatic, descriptive, intelligent style of writing grew on me the further I got into the book. I found these cryptic stories completely different from anything I had previously read. As one reviewer says: “You’re sure that they are about something important, but you’re not sure what.”

Each compelling story is very different from the others; some are rather eerie and some have a certain touch of irony – and humour.

One particular line in the short story ‘Truth and Lies’, which made me giggle, is: “he never stopped talking except to fart”. Must remember that line! My favourite stories were ‘A Walk on Hoy’, ‘The Literary Party’ and ‘The Unnameable Fish’, the last of which I think our local readers will particularly enjoy! Treading lightly

You may be familiar with the idea of a footprinting – counting the impact associated with your lifestyle.

In the countryside there is an assumption that we lead greener lives – using wood burning stoves and eating ‘local’ food where we can. Unfortunately, this is not the case for many of us because of our reliance on cars rather than public transport, and for many, heating oil rather than gas.

If we compare the houses of a family in the country to that of a typical town family, the former produces about 30% more carbon. If you commute to work using the underground and bus instead of driving, and can walk to the shops, you have only about 15% of the carbon impact of a country dweller who has to drive to work and the shops.

It’s easy to see now why carbon footprinting is such a valuable tool, as it puts everything in perspective – such as your holiday flights, which could easily produce as much carbon as all your family diesel car use for the year added together.

Online shopping has conflicting benefits and problems. Many assume that ordering online is good, because it avoids a journey to the nearest town or city. But studies have shown that despite the rise of online shopping, delivery miles for goods have not changed that much – because people tend to use the time they save on other leisure activities which involve driving… and the internet is expected to produce the equivalent of a billion tonnes of CO2 annually by 2025. It’s really not easy being green!

News from Talgarth

by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth As I write, we are moving into the season of Lent, which for some of us involves abstaining from something we enjoy, and for others the taking on of a new activity or challenge. Whichever category we happen to fall into – or indeed, if we simply carry on regardless – Lent and the weeks leading up to Easter give us the opportunity to reflect and to gain some much needed headspace in the bustle of everyday life.

Some local residents already have a place of calm and sanctuary in their garden and other dedicated local growers find the same at their allotment, especially as we look to the spring. In this connection, it was my privilege recently to attend the AGM of the Talgarth Allotments Association at The Castle Hotel and to see Mike Tovey take over as chair from Chris Hill, with a strong team of officers to support him in the coming year. I have been impressed by the Association’s determination to develop the site over recent years, including the extension earlier in this decade, spearheaded by founder chair Roy ‘The Runner’ Jones. The Talgarth allotments today are just one example of what can be achieved when people adopt responsibility for facilities in their locality, with a little transitional help from the local authority.

Recent weeks have also brought positive news for two other exciting local projects. Firstly, the Bronllys Well-being Park has announced its appointment of Project Development Officer, Jon Adams. Mr Adams is based on the Bronllys Hospital site and will be undertaking a range of feasibility work to realise the potential of Bronllys Well-being Park. The post is funded by Arwain, the Rural Development Plan for Wales (RDP), an initiative of the Welsh Government, in partnership with the European Union and promises to provide a major boost to the project.

Secondly, the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority has committed, via its Sustainable Development Fund, to support an in depth study into the potential for an innovative liberal arts

university, the Black Mountains College. It is to be developed on principles of sustainability and rural resilience and aims to drive regeneration locally. The award, made by the whole National Park Authority at a special meeting last month, gives the project a major boost and enables, amongst other things, the development of a comprehensive business plan.

Both projects enjoy strong support from Powys County Council and have been praised by the Welsh Future Generations Commissioner, Sophie Howe.

Last week, I was delighted to attend a special presentation evening in Talgarth Town Hall, organized and delivered by the group of Gwernyfed High School pupils who visited Pizzoferrato last autumn, as part of Talgarth’s flourishing twinning link with the ancient town in Italy’s Abruzzo region. It was heartening to see the sheer enthusiasm and growing confidence of the boys and girls involved, following last year’s successful hosting of our European guests, on a series of themed visits. Special thanks to Jane Green, twinning co-ordinator, Ann Seymour, who masterminded the evening and indeed all members of the Pizzoferrato team, who helped to make it happen.

Gwernyfed Geckos Quiz Night Gwernyfed Geckos Netball Club started up some five years ago. The Club currently has two teams entered into the Hereford Netball League: one team in division 2; the other team in division 3 – both doing very well.

On Thursday 5th April the Baskerville Arms, Clyro, will be hosting the Club’s first Quiz Night to raise funds. 1918 was a momentous year in many respects. It was the year the First World War ended, producing huge political and social changes across the whole world, one of which in the UK was the granting for some women the right to vote. We take that right for granted now, but all-tooeasily forget the decades of struggle and campaigning by many brave women (and men) that had to take place to achieve it. So it is absolutely fitting that we celebrate the 100th anniversary of this extraordinary change.

It was the famous Liberal MP and philosopher, John Stuart Mill, who presented the first ‘mass votes for women’ petition to Parliament in 1866 and led the Parliamentary Debate on the issue the following year.

This was a time when, believe it or not, women were even barred from pursuing higher education. So this was a very radical proposal and it was another 42 years before women of 30 and over were allowed to vote in a General Election and stand for election to Parliament; and another 10 years before all men and women of 21 and over were eligible to vote.

Yet the journey is far from over. Despite the progress towards equality of the past 100 years women are still under-represented in the upper echelons of most business sector and indeed public life in general. Barely a third of MPs at Westminster are women. I am proud to say that, in stark contrast to Westminster, the National Assembly for Wales has achieved near gender balance at each election since its formation in 1999. This is good, but the fact is that for women the task of getting elected to local and national government is still tougher than for men.This is very much unfinished business.

As is the issue of the age at which citizens have the right to vote. Just a couple of weeks ago the Welsh Government announced plans to reduce the voting age at local council elections to 16, which I warmly welcome, but only as a start. It is surely not right to expect 16 and 17 year olds to be able to work, pay income tax, get married, have children and join the armed forces, yet have no say in how their money is spent and their lives influenced by politicians. Bringing the voting age down to 16 for all elections would at last complete the job of creating voting equality and empower our young adults. What better year to achieve this than 100 years after 1918?

We are very excited to report that our new mounting area is now underway. This will make getting on and off our ponies so much easier for riders and volunteers alike. This is next to the new school which the Miles family are constructing, so a very exciting time.

The search is also on for a new weight-bearing pony, as some of our riders are growing fast, and need a larger mount.

Proving that volunteering is not just for the more mature, we were recently joined by Lydia. At twelve years old, she is the youngest member of the team and already proving herself to be a real asset.

News from Gwernyfed High School Ask the experts – Gwernyfed High School pupils become sustainable energy experts Pupils from Gwernyfed High School recently presented to their governors in the role of professional energy consultants, outlining what they would like to see done to improve the energy efficiency of their school.

They have been working on a project called Our Future’s People led by Severn Wye Energy Agency in Llandrindod Wells. Free to schools, and funded through the Welsh Government Rural Development Programme, with additional funding from the Brecon Beacons National Park Sustainable Development Fund, Our Future’s People is a sustainable energy project that seeks to reduce schools’ carbon emissions whilst educating future citizens of the need to protect our planet.

Mark Stead from Severn Wye said, ‘This is a great project that puts students at the heart of decisionmaking in their schools. They often think they don’t have the power to make a difference at their age but this project turns that thinking on its head, empowering pupils to make a difference not only to their school communities but also the planet as a whole.’

The presentation formed the culmination of the first phase of the project during which the pupils have completed technical training, carried out surveys of their school and developed their reports and presentations.

Eileen Murphy, Governor at the school exclaimed, ‘Their presentation was skilled and confident and showed a commitment to encourage changes in behaviours across the GHS school community. The team made clear and considered recommendations to Governors, and answered our questions with confidence. I look forward to seeing their action plan have a positive impact across the school.’

News from Hay & District Chamber of Commerce Hay Independence Celebrations and #Bookstagramhay On 1st April 1977 Richard Booth proclaimed himself to be King of the Independent Kingdom of Hay, and that spirit of independence has attracted outsiders, mavericks, free spirits and trendsetters ever since.

Last year to mark the 40th anniversary the town celebrated in fantastic style, and following that success this year will be even bigger! There will be 10 days of family-friendly events highlighting all of the things that make Hay such a magical place.

From 30th March to 8th April 2018 there will be a full programme of events across the town, including the second annual Baskerville Wayzgoose, an Easter Extravaganza from Hay Theatre Group and an opening party at the Parish Hall with local stars SuperSonicDisco and WubWubWub. There will be a variety of kid’s workshops, something for everyone and even a bookshop treasure hunt.

For those seeking adventure there will be guided walks from Hay Tours and canoeing on the river with Want to Canoe. For the thinkers there are numerous talks and discussions, from a seminar on the history of the book from the good people at Bangor University to a literary themed quiz at The Globe.

Throughout it all there will be meet ups with members of the international social media group #bookstagram – these artistic book-lovers choose the original Town of Books for their annual gettogether. Better still, you don’t have to be elderly or disabled to join our members’ only service. People can join simply because they have difficulties accessing transport. Carers can travel for free for local journeys.

Our annual membership is just £10 and journeys start at £2 for a one-way journey within Hay up to £7 for a return trip to Bronllys hospital. Less visible is the community car service that we run, as volunteers use their own cars, for which our clients are charged 45p per mile. In order to join, you just need to live within a 9 mile radius of Hay. We carry out around 6,000 passenger journeys every year and our wonderful volunteers drive over 20,000 miles.

If you, or a friend or neighbour would benefit from becoming a Dial-a-Ride member, please ring the office for a membership pack. News from Haygarth Medical Centre Total Triage As most of our patients will be aware, some months ago we made changes in the way that you make a routine GP appointment. Patients who telephone or present at the reception desk to make a routine GP appointment are asked by reception for their contact details; they are then added to the total triage list for the Practice Nurse to call back later that day or on another day if that is more convenient. The Practice Nurse will then assess your symptoms/concerns and offer an appointment with a GP or another healthcare professional appropriate to your needs, or in some cases be able to address your concerns over the phone, thus avoiding unnecessary trips to the surgery.

This change was in response to the increasing waiting time to see a GP. Patients were often having to wait two weeks or more for a routine GP appointment and in many instances patients were being asked to phone back repeatedly to try and secure an appointment.

Since introducing the total triage system in March 2017, we have seen the wait for a routine GP appointment reduce from over two weeks to one week to five

days. In addition to this, the practice is now able to offer some 15-minute routine GP appointments for those patients who have more complex needs.

We have received a lot of positive feedback from our patients regarding the total triage system as it is freeing up many GP appointments, thus allowing those patients who need to be seen by a GP to do so more promptly.

‘I am really pleased with the triage system. I have used it twice and got excellent advice and referral first time and prompt appointment on the second occasion.’
