The Companionship for the 50+ has been running since February this year. I was chuffed to receive a call last week from one very happy lady. She was extremely thankful to us and our publication. I’ve also had people call me to say that while they haven’t found love, they’ve found friendship – this is marvellous to hear. I’m so pleased this feature is helping connect local people.

Gordon Snape Gordon Snape has been the Ladies Coach at Gwernyfed RFC for the past 6 seasons. Prior to that he was involved in girls’ and ladies’ rugby, coaching Cardiff Blues Under 15s/18s and Welsh College.

In his own words: “I’ve been fortunate enough to coach for the past 22 years at Gwernyfed RFC, starting with Under 8s on a Sunday morning. Now the Ladies are playing in the Welsh Premiership, rubbing shoulders with Internationals and showing what Mid-Walians can achieve.”

Where do you live now? Hay-on-Wye. Marital status? Married with three children, Megan, Zack and Lily.

Most exciting thing you’ve won? Coaching the winning team for the 2012 plate final at Llandovery – Gwernyfed beat Barry 21–3.

What makes you grumpy? Not trying, or not taking reponsibility for your actions.

Have any bad habits? Happy being scruffy.

Which bad habits drive you crazy? Bad time-keeping, it’s just rude.

List one thing you wish you could change about yourself: I wish I could run fast.

If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? Bhutan.

What would be your dream job? I always wanted to be a lighthouse keeper.

If you HAD to change your name, what would you change it to? Either Zebadiah, Obadiah, Lenin or Fred.

Teenage crush? Sophia Loren.

What have you done today to make you feel proud? I dug up some very nice potatoes and picked some rather large rhubarb.

You’re given one million pounds, what do you spend it on? Simple, the kids.

Off Grid Gourmet at the globe @ hay

The Off Grid Gourmet restaurant is rather different from anywhere else in Hay. Based on the ground floor at The Globe at Hay in Newport Street, I would class this bespoke restaurant to be any of these words; chic, cool, hip, trendy.White walls, large flagstones on the floor, lots of glass. A huge improvement on the dark place it used be. Sweet cottage garden flowers – freesias and gypsophila – arranged in milk bottles adorn the tables.

Nice glassware, and those gorgeous prints from local business Botanical Art Elements on the walls.

Chef and patron Hugh Sawyer gave us a great welcome and our friendly waitress Amy took our drinks order and showed us our table in the corner. People were arriving through the courtyard entrance to come and listen to the bands who were appearing in the evening.

Soundchecks were taking place upstairs, which was a rather nice accompaniment to our supper. A party of 8 ladies occupied the table in the middle of the room.

Perhaps they had come to see a band later on?

Wine for the evening: a glass of South African Chenin Blanc for us both, followed by Argentinian Malbec. The menu is fabulous. Limited, which I really like. A choice of four main courses of good fresh, cooked-to-order food.

Our starter of Mushroom Soup with homemade bread (£5.50) was absolutely divine. We could tell that it was made with proper field mushrooms.Very nice bread too, with proper butter, as one would expect really – none of your little packets.

My fillet steak with smoked garlic béarnaise, sautéed potatoes and a smoked sirloin and beetroot salad (£14.50) was cooked to perfection – a good, tender fillet.

Robert chose the other non-vegetarian dish on the menu, a Warm Lamb Salad. A 4oz apple-smoked lamb steak with organic leaves, a honey, walnut and mustard dressing with tzatsiki and potato salad (£12.50). He loved the lamb and remarked that the tzatsiki was taking him back to that Greek island of a few weeks ago with every mouthful he devoured.

I think Hugh has a great flair for creating fabulous healthy interesting dishes. Superb quality food and not a chip in sight. Well not tonight, anyway!

They’ve got it right here. Superb food in a rather nice setting. Great service too – thanks Amy. Amy started here this May, just in time to get thrown in at the deep end for The Globe’s mini-festival.

The other two main course choices were herb pancakes stuffed with mushroom and spinach, with cheese sauce, organic leaf salad and potato and cherry tomato salad (£8.95), and a lightly spiced bean burger with halloumi, hummus, gherkins, brioche bun and coleslaw (£7.95).

Now on to the pudding. Two choices (£5.50). As soon as I spotted the Gooseberry Fool I didn’t even read on.

I just love it, and this pudding of Hugh’s was absolutely no exception. Robert’s white wine poached peach with strawberries, coconut and blueberries was also just wonderful. A very healthy dish for Robert. It’ll do him good!

He gained much of his experience working as a chef in high end chalets in Switzerland. Virtually everything on the menu is homemade and he combines all manner of unlikely ingredients to make the dishes.

Protecting wildlife for the future

A life behind bars You’ve started thinking about getting healthy? But it’s where to start, right?

I know from dealing with my Club members, class participants and Personal Training clients how hard it can be to keep the fitness and health momentum going, even with the best intentions in the world! There are so many things to tackle: potentially – your nutrition, cardio fitness, body strength, ‘motor’ fitness (co-ordination and balance). There’s (possibly) cardio machines to master, great technique for the equipment in the weights area, flexibility to conquer, and the classes you fancy to nail.

Not to mention tweaking your nutrition to get it just right for YOU (NO generic plan suits everyone, so listening in to what works for YOU is crucial).

With great coaching you can and will accomplish all this, and more. However I’d urge you to focus on one thing at a time. Change one thing, and psychology research tells us your success will be close to 85%. Change two, and that number drops to 35%. Three or more things, it drops to <10%. Maybe choose to focus on ONE aspect of health (and even then you might want to break

that down further). So for starters you might work on nutrition and then (as I have urged here many times) take small steps to improve each week.

Too many times I’ve observed a client take on too much, fail at one aspect, and then feel they’ve ‘failed.’ Working together, we can retrieve it but they’ll always be wary of feeling inadequate again. If I had to choose I’d go nutrition first and then get very serious and dedicated to WEIGHTS. How I LOVE weights! Just a few (say 5), simple compound (multi muscle) exercises to start with – working to what you can handle (starting with an 8 rep, 3 set system if you’re age >21). As it becomes easier you UP the weights! Easy! Your payback? You get stronger, and with that, you’ll have more energy for EVERYTHING in life. You’ll start to feel invincible and this in turn will give you the momentum to start reaching out for the aforementioned aspects of health. You’ll get leaner and burn more calories even when at rest. Everyone can do weights, young, seniors, LADIES (yes you!), and men. Start!

Citronella Grass

Citronella (cymbopogon nardus) is a tall perennial grass with tufts of fragrant leaves. It can be grown outside to deter mosquitoes and other insects but only in hotter countries as it needs constant temperatures of above 0°C. The pure essential oil is extracted from the leaves by steam distillation. It has a lovely citrus/lemony aroma and many therapeutic uses. The best oil currently comes from Java as it contains more of the principal constituents citronellol and geraniol.

Citronella is an effective natural insect-repellent. If you go on holiday be sure to take a small bottle with you – spray the room or put a few drops on your pillow.

Apply to mosquito or insect bites a few times a day (diluting first in a base oil), or wash your body, scalp and hair with citronella soap for extra protection.

Citronella oil has GRAS status which means generally recognised as food safe, but if using on skin do a patch test first and avoid using on skin whilst pregnant.

The best ways to reduce your home’s environmental impact are sometimes counter-intuitive. For example, would you be surprised to learn that burning wood pellets to heat your home is worse for the environment than burning oil? Or that the sooty pollution created by one wood burner in a year is equal to that of 1,000 petrol cars?

People often get confused by the various technologies out there, and find it difficult to prioritise in order to make a difference, so here is some useful information to try to help you understand it better.

Of all the energy used in your home, typically 70% of it is used for heating the rooms, 15% on heating the water and 15% on electricity. If you can address the heating, either by reducing the heat requirement or by using a sustainable heat source, then you will be making the most impact. However, improving insulation in rural houses can be quite an expensive proposition, once you have tackled the obvious issues such as loft insulation. Swapping a boiler for a heat pump will often be cheaper. Heat pumps are greener and running costs are lower than gas when they are installed properly – though unfortunately many are not!

Solar hot water systems (costing £4k+) will reduce the hot water impact by about 50–60%. A solar electric system (costing £5k+) will typically cover about 80% of your annual electricity usage.

There are still generous government tariffs for all renewable technologies – leading to paybacks in under 7 or 8 years in most cases.

Eardisley Show This year’s Show takes place on Bank Holiday Monday 28th August and is one of the few remaining traditional Village Shows in the county. It offers something for all the family, from gardeners, bakers and flower arrangers to dog owners and vintage/classic car enthusiasts.

Why come to Slimming World?

Walking through the door to the Slimming World group in Hay exactly 4 years ago, I was desperate. I needed to do something to stop me from gradually eating my way to really poor health. Already part way there, taking blood pressure medication, on anti-depressants, surely diabetes was just around the corner? I was fed up with being the fat one in the photos, standing at the back, strategically placing myself behind others to hide my size. I was tired of buying bigger and bigger clothes from the one shop I could go to (I was size 26 at my largest). Would I succeed at Slimming World? I’d tried it before but hadn’t stuck at it. I couldn’t do it on my own so this was the only way. It’s the best decision I’ve ever made for myself.

Clyro Rainbows & Brownies

Clyro Rainbow & Brownies are looking for more leaders! Since the Rainbows’ creation in April 2015 they have gone from strength to strength, with almost 20 girls attending the meetings each week. They have also evolved into a joint Rainbows and Brownies Unit.

They are now looking for more leaders, so that separate meetings can be run for Rainbows, 5–7 years, and Brownies, 7–10 years.This would allow more local girls to join in the fun and adventures and for each unit to run more age-specific activities. It is the only local Girlguiding UK unit and is open to all girls in the area.

Currently girls attend from four of the local schools.

You don’t need to have a daughter to get involved and, as well as more leaders to run a weekly meeting, all offers of help and support are greatly appreciated.

The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution R.A.B.I. – the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution – is a welfare charity which helps farming people in financial difficulty. They support people who currently work in farming as well as those who have retired or are unable to work due to illness or disability. They also support dependants.

People must have limited savings and be on a low income to qualify for help, but even if R.A.B.I. cannot give a grant they may be able to support in other ways, for example with advice or food vouchers.

Gwernyfed RFC Ride to Target Just over a year ago Gwernyfed RFC were given the opportunity to buy their Trefecca Road pitches from Powys County Council. Given the chance to secure the future of rugby in the Black Mountains, members voted to seize the opportunity – and seize it they truly have, raising the purchase price within fifteen months against a projected timetable of ten years!

As Chairman of Fundraising Shan Thomas said, “Nothing any good comes easy. We formed a fundraising Committee and it is down to the dedication and sheer hard work of the Committee and so many other people, together with the huge generosity of our community that we have looked up at a mountain – and climbed to the summit.”

was able to announce on Saturday that Mary Jones and her family had very kindly agreed that the fields would be named after the Club’s late President, Hon Secretary, Life Member and friend to all, Brian ‘Titch’ Jones – a fitting tribute to a man who was the very foundation stone of a great community Club.

Initiatives ranged from traditional fêtes and cake stalls to the ‘sale’ of squares on the pitch for supporters, whose names will be memorialised, choir concerts and a Great Cycle Ride involving sixty riders and many more support staff that took the team from Holyhead RFC in Anglesey to Llantwit Major RFC in the south – 240 miles in two exhausting days.

On Saturday 1 July at the Club’s annual Family Fun Day, lead organiser and all round inspiration Geraint Skyrme presented Shan Thomas with cheque for £45,000 – the reward for the magnificent effort. “This ride and everything that went into its organisation and success speaks volumes for the spirit and camaraderie that we are privileged to be part of here at Gwernyfed,” said the former First XV hooker, “To be able to help secure the Club’s future by taking part in what was a humbling effort is something that we will carry with us for ever.”

Shan Thomas was overwhelmed by the support and generosity. “From the child who threw a few coppers into a collecting bucket through to our many generous sponsors, we have been fortunate to have had such unstinting encouragement. I hope that a huge ‘thank you’ goes some way to recording just how grateful everyone at Gwernyfed RFC is,” said the emotional Club stalwart.

News from Talgarth

by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth Over the last few weeks, we in Talgarth have seen more than our share of dry, warm summer weather – good news for our many visitors as well as for those farmers who managed to clear their hay and silage fields ahead of the Royal Welsh Show. I was delighted to see such a strong turnout last weekend at Cwmdu and District Show. With veteran commentator Steve Meredith on the mic, public address systems provided as usual by Andrew Bufton and wifi connection, delivered for the first time courtesy of John, Trudie and Owain of Riverside Internet, there was a strong local team behind the show this year.

One set of visitors who may have been drawn by the balmy evenings, but whose attentions we could do without, are the many day trippers for whom the derelict former Mid Wales Hospital has a strangely magnetic attraction. Increasingly, young people from the South Wales Valleys, the West Midlands, Bristol and Greater London have been committing trespass – and exposing themselves to serious short and long term health risks – to explore the decrepit and supposedly haunted abandoned hospital. While this illicit tourism has gone on for several years at a low level, recent social media coverage seems to have led to an explosion of interest. This, in turn, has led to a wave of lawlessness, harassment and inconvenience to residents in the vicinity of the hospital, as well as leaving a trail of anti-social activity – and at its worst, criminal damage - in Penbont Road, Bell Street and High Street.

I have been working intensively with local residents, businesses and Dyfed Powys Police to help devise a strategy to deal with the issues and to plan the next steps. A meeting with local residents has been held, with the key players in the Neighbourhood Policing Team. A multi-agency approach is now being planned, involving the site owner, Dyfed Powys Police, Powys County Council, Mid and West Wales

Fire and Rescue Authority and Brecon Beacons National Park Authority. I intend to play my part, alongside Talgarth Town Council, Kirsty Williams AM and others, in seeking a sustainable solution for the site, which will bring benefits for those living close by, as well as for the wider town.

Last month, I had cause to thank the staff of Talgarth Medical Centre and Bronllys Hospital for the levels of care and professionalism that I had witnessed. In recent days, several people have contacted me to flag up the role of Primrose Pharmacy in providing crucial support for a local resident, Chris Mann, who had suffered an anaphylactic reaction following multiple wasp stings. Chris also called me personally to commend Stefan Fec and his team for their help, which he believes to have been critical to his survival, ahead of the arrival of the ambulance crew. On this occasion, and in many less dramatic situations, Primrose Pharmacy continues to provide an invaluable service to residents of Talgarth, our adjacent communities and visitors.

I look forward to seeing many of you at community events in the coming weeks, including Talgarth Festival of the Black Mountains on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th August.

The proposals will strengthen the code to make sure that Councils and other proposers do everything they can to keep a rural school open. The case for closure must be strong, and the decision must not be taken unless all viable alternatives have been conscientiously considered. This might include federation or increasing the community use of school buildings to make the school more viable.

Schools in rural areas face unique issues and children in rural schools deserve the same opportunities as those in urban ones. The schools are at the heart of community life and they need a fair hearing when their future is being considered.

We are also, for the first time ever, establishing a definition of rural schools and publishing a list of rural schools. When a school is on this list the further requirements set out in the code apply.

These changes build on previous measures I have already announced, such as the £2.5m per year rural schools grant. This has been available from April 2017. Its key purposes are: to encourage innovation (such as new digital technologies); to support greater school to school working including collaboration and federation; and to increase the community use of school buildings.

Of course, all of this is underpinned by the need to raise standards and offer opportunities to all of our young people.

Supporting rural schools was part of the agreement that led to me entering the Welsh Government and the proposals outlined above will help to do this.

The UK has been suffering from a severe housing shortage for well over a decade. Many see our housing crisis as being primarily in large metropolitan areas, but we in the countryside are also struggling to meet current housing demand.

Young people are looking to purchase affordable first homes, people are looking to upsize or downsize and Powys is becoming a popular place for people to retire to. In Brecon & Radnorshire we have a situation where many people want less house building to preserve the look of their local town or village, and I sympathise with that. We also have the challenge of creating new housing for our aspirational and talented youngsters who wish to get on the housing market. Many young people want to live in and around the countryside, but there just aren’t any good quality, affordable housing for them to be able to stay in their communities. We should not ask our young people to re-locate when their parents had the ability to happily settle in these rural communities. We must strike the right balance between maintaining the tranquillity of our beautiful constituency whilst meeting housing demand so future generations can live in this area.

We must create a mixed housing stock here in Brecon and Radnorshire, comprising of terrace housing, small apartment blocks and detached housing. At present the new build housing stock mainly comprises of semi-detached and detached housing. We need to start to build good quality varied housing to ensure we meet current demand going forward.

I will be working in Parliament over this term to ensure that the Government commits sufficient funding to build new homes in rural areas. I will meet with local building firms in Brecon and Radnorshire to see what they believe needs to be done to ensure we meet growing housing demand and work with councillors across Powys to ensure the right strategy is put in place so that Powys owned land can be used for affordable housing. Both the private sector and Government must take action to resolve this housing crisis, because if we don’t resolve it soon then generations to come will suffer and be kept off the housing ladder for good.

Showing support for Fairtrade products will influence shops like Sainsbury’s so do look for the label at your next grocery shop. As well as food, there are plenty of other Fair Trade products available in Hay. Drop by Eighteen Rabbit for Fairtrade cotton t-shirts and some new summery women’s nightwear. Flow and Number Two also carry some Fair Trade fashion lines.

Fairtrade has been in the news recently due to Sainsbury’s rather worrying decision to ditch the recognised Fairtrade label and set up their own scheme. The Fairtrade label provides reassurance to shoppers and is well recognised, so even if Sainsbury’s new scheme is well managed it will mean more work for us in checking up on them.There are some concerning reports of decisions on spending community investments being made in London rather than within the communities themselves.

This would disempower farmers and goes against what many of us believe Fairtrade stands for. Search change.org to add your name to a growing petition on this issue.
