News from Glasbury Ward

by County Councillor James Gibson-Watt Not everything has gone well since the residents of Glasbury Ward saw fit to send me back to Powys County Hall to represent them after the by-election last August. But it has been really good to see how well Powys County Council’s Highways staff are still, despite the current budget cutbacks, able to respond to requests for repairs and ditch clearances on our myriad network of minor roads across this very rural area. From dealing with the excessive amounts of water and potholes on the lanes around Painscastle and Rhosgoch during the rains of last winter to restoring the Clyro to Hay footway more

recently, the Boughrood Highways depot staff have done excellent work. Sometimes I think we are all guilty of not saying ‘thank you’ enough for the service of our local authority staff. By the time you read this, the ‘consultation’ on the future of Gwernyfed High School and Community Sports Centre will have finished and now we await the outcome of further work on the options, before the council’s Cabinet considers the matter again. Who we elect to be our next Assembly Member will be crucial in influencing whether we save the school and sports centre or not. The choice here on May 5th will be between the highly-experienced, tireless campaigner Kirsty Williams, with a track record of outstanding service for this area and a doughty supporter of Gwernyfed; or an untested Conservative who previously stood here as a Welsh Nationalist candidate! I know who I want to be fighting for Gwernyfed in the coming months. This is no time for a novice.

News from Talgarth by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth As I draw together my thoughts for this month’s Wye Local column, the lambs in the fields all around are enjoying the warm sun on their backs and the weather prospects are set fair for a little while to come. There has also been something of a buzz around town these past few weeks, with higher visitor numbers, which can only be positive for the local economy. I hope that this will be sustained as we head towards the summer. Many readers will know that I am currently in the midst of the National Assembly for Wales election campaign as lead candidate for the Welsh Liberal Democrats in Mid and West Wales. Over the past five years, it has been my privilege to work for you in the National Assembly, serving as Chair of Petitions Committee and as my party’s representative on the Environment Committee. I am seeking re-election, as I would relish the opportunity to continue to serve. The ongoing fight to defend Gwernyfed High School against threat of closure - and my commitment to supporting the ambitious redevelopment plans for Bronllys Hospital - are just two causes that I would continue to prioritise as your Regional AM. My party believes that it is vital to foster a greater appreciation of food, as well as the potential contribution that local growing initiatives have to make. I am proud to have played my part in regenerating the allotments adjacent to Coed-y-Bryn, by returning them to local control under the Talgarth and District Allotments Association. Most of the heavy lifting, however, has been done by the allotment keepers themselves and I would like to pay special tribute to Roy Jones for his sterling work as founder chairman of the Association. Equally, I would like to congratulate Chris Hill on being elected to succeed Roy in the role. I am sure we all wish him well. Since RBS announced its intention to close the Nat West branch in Talgarth in September 2014, I have worked with the bank authorities, Talgarth Town Council and local community groups, to try to identify a community solution for this keynote building on The Square. As recently as last July, I

was able to get a planned auction cancelled, to give community partners additional time. I was therefore delighted to learn that the Wye and Usk Foundation is in advanced talks to purchase and redevelop the building, as their new home in Talgarth. The Foundation is a charity, which does sterling work in the environmental field, backed by Welsh Government and European Union Funding. I look forward to continuing to support the Foundation – and am sure that local residents will be as pleased as I am at the prospect of the building being brought back to its former glory. It is difficult to conceive of a more fitting home for the Wye and Usk Foundation – and I wish them every success. I hope to see many of you around at community events in the coming weeks. The fourth annual Talgarth Walking Festival on the upcoming Bank Holiday weekend will be the culmination of a lot of commitment and hard work by the organisers. This involves collaboration with a range of businesses and local groups, all of them determined to build upon the foundations of earlier years’ success. Once again, we are at our best when we work together to achieve shared objectives. As I have commented previously, these days Talgarth’s glorious natural environment is being more fully appreciated and it is only right that our local economy should benefit directly from this, as we aim to make the town an even more attractive place for visitors and locals alike. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any feedback or issues of concern on: 07703 112113 by email: william.powell@mwwlibdems. org.uk, on Facebook or Twitter @WmPowell2016. Alternatively, you can come along to my next advice surgery on Friday13th May from 5:00pm at Talgarth Tourist Information & Resource Centre. Appointments are not essential – but advanced notice may be useful if the issues you wish to raise are complex. You can also pop into the TiRC to request a call from me on any issue which is troubling you. Best wishes, William

Powys Secondary School Plans MUST be scrapped Having consistently campaigned in the National Assembly for greater transparency in local authorities across Mid & West Wales, I recently challenged Powys County Council Leader Cllr Barry Thomas to a fair and open debate on the future of our local high schools.

Brecon urgently needs a new school and fresh thinking is required now on how Welsh Government funding can be secured for this, together with equity of access for Welsh Medium education locally.

Welsh Lib Dem More Nurses Campaign wins cross party support As AM for Mid & West Wales, I worked with Kirsty Williams to secure a minimum nurse staffing level in Wales, starting on acute wards, and steadily spreading throughout the Welsh NHS. The support of the RCN and top clinicians, combined with Kirsty’s tenacity, won Welsh Government backing for this ground-breaking legislation.

As a former pupil and head boy of Gwernyfed High School, where I now serve as a Governor, I am totally committed to the School’s future. It would be utter madness to close such a popular and successful school, contrary to longstanding Welsh Government policy and the recent Donaldson Review. If re-elected as your Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for the Mid & West Wales Region, this will remain a high priority.

Election Day - Thursday, May 5th Don’t forget you have 3 votes to cast: 1. For your B&R Assembly Member 2. For your Regional Assembly Member 3. For the Police & Crime Commissioner Published and promoted by Selwyn Runnett on behalf of MWW Lib Dems All at 83a, Water Street, Carmarthen. SA31 1PZ. Printed by CariADs Local Ltd. HR3 6EB

Content evolves as we work on each publication. We see what topics Our coverage area are covered by advertisers. We also speak with our readers on Social Media. Just recently one reader asked to see a wildlife page for kids - consider it done Janet Mason! As well as articles we include competitions, recipes, book reviews - and most importantly 8 pages of what’s on listings. This is proving very successful with parents. We list events during the week, at weekends and one off events. I, particularly, take a peek at the listings, see if it works with the weather forecast and Bobs your uncle we’re off to a local class, a guided walk, a treasure hunt, a show, etc. We print 7000+ copies. The first batch go to Pear Communications, they put our family magazine in over 180 accommodation providers in the area. This is to capture the visiting families - those in the area looking for things to do, where to eat, shopping ideas. Then we get the magazine out to 14 Nurseries and 26 Primary Schools in the area.Teachers kindly put one magazine in each School / Nursery bag, going home to the decision maker - the parent or guardian. Lastly we deliver to the community points which we think that the families tend to visit, places like libraries, tourist information centres, doctors surgeries ... This way we hope we’ve given every family the chance to pick up and read our magazine. Would you like to contribute to the magazine? Email us your ideas. New, fresh ideas are always welcomed. If you offer a service, a product or events/classes for children aged 0 - 12 years then Cariads Family Magazine is right up your street! Our Summer issue is out in plenty of time for the Summer Holidays and runs until October 2016. Any questions, please do contact us. Details on page 1. The growth of this publication has been superb – thank you to the team, teachers, advertisers, readers ... oh and my children for giving me the inspiration. Lisa Marie Badham x

News from Chris Davies -Your local MP

Hello from Westminster. Over the last few weeks the issue of security has been inescapable. From Brussels to Lahore, from Washington to Cyprus; wherever you are security is on the tip of everyone’s tongue. These sorts of attacks are both deplorable and cowardly and I cannot condemn them enough. The security of everyone in the UK is incredibly important, and something this government takes very seriously. That’s why I’m proud that this Government has both ring-fenced the NATO defence spending target of two percent of GDP and committed to investing £500 million in counter terrorism funding. Furthermore, in the recent Spending Review we also announced there will be a £900 million cash increase in police spending. With these spending commitments we are boosting the UK’s capabilities to keep us safe both at home and abroad. In other news, it’s only a matter of weeks until you all cast your votes in the Assembly elections. Thursday 5th May is a huge opportunity to let the voices of Brecon and Radnorshire be heard in the Welsh Assembly. This is the most important Assembly election in a generation, with the future of education, health and rural services across Wales all on the line. For example, the recent local government settlement, that cut Powys County Council’s spending by three percent and has led to the proposed school closures, was put through on the nod by the current Assembly Member. We need a representative in Cardiff that understands the people of Brecon and Radnorshire’s needs. We deserve to be listened to and represented effectively in the Assembly. The time has to come to change the status quo and stop politicians in Cardiff ignoring our rural communities without understanding the implications on our local services. I want a better, stronger, more local voice for Brecon on the fifth and I hope you do too. So that’s it for now. If you would like to get in touch with me on these or any other issue you can do so at chris.davies.mp@parliament.uk or call 01982 559180; or if you see me out and about do stop and say hello!

Responding to Hay There was little or no art during Eugene Fisk’s schooldays. Born into a long line of bricklayers, all he learned from that was that a wall isn’t made by simply putting one brick above another, but with a ‘bond’. His own bonding was to be with people, history and buildings. This disposition was further promoted when, as a child, he was taken by his mother during the dark days of the bombing in London, on frequent visits to the cinema. The importance of the face in films as a direct, wordless expression entered into his subsequent work as a portrait painter. Perhaps the bricklaying ancestral line did emerge with Eugene’s work as Artist-in-Residence in various places: Milton Keynes, Agincourt in France, Budapest, Venice. Other Artist-in-Residence posts followed his coming to Hay in the 80s, at the Kilvert Gallery, with the Welsh National Opera, and during the early days of the Hay Festival. His present book is a failed attempt at suggesting the abundance, vitality and variety of the Hay community.

Looking to recruit volunteers The Hay Tourist Bureau was established some 30 years ago in a caravan in Hay Car Park to provide information to visitors to Hay. It has had several homes since then, but is now in Chapel Cottage at the entrance to Backfold. During that time the way they have provided information and services has changed slowly to suit the circumstances but the Internet has dramatically changed the way today’s visitor gets information, and this has affected the staff ’s income and made them look at the way they provide their service to Hay.

town the staff are reorganising the way they work. After this year’s Hay Festival the Bureau will be staffed by Volunteers and they intend to extend the hours to cover the lunch period. They are therefore looking to recruit volunteers to work three and half hour shifts either morning or afternoon. If you are interested please telephone the Bureau or call in for more information. 01497 820144.

Part of what they do is obvious in the production of the brochure, sale of maps and books but it is the hidden value to Hay that is very important. Many of the visitors to the Bureau don’t spend any money but they want information about specific shops, where to eat, where to stay, what to see and the staff in the Bureau are able to direct them to their destination. This leaves the visitor with a good feel about Hay and also acts as an unpaid advertisment for the various providers. In order to continue to provide this service to the

Loyal Hay Lodge The Loyal Hay Lodge was formed in 1890 and today they hold the meetings in the old school on Brecon Road. So often the general impression of Freemasonry is of a closed secret world but this far from the truth. One of their objectives is Charity and they distribute large sums of money each year to non-Masonic organisations. Whilst much of this is distributed nationally from their headquarters each Lodge is also able to make grants to local organisations. In the past they have supported Local Play Groups, Dial a Ride, Luncheon Clubs, Schools, Hospitals, Hospices and many more good causes.

Members of the Lodge will be there from 7.30pm on each of those evenings to show you round and answer any questions you may have about Freemasonry. They look forward to meeting and welcoming you, and hope you may be pleasantly surprised, and even wish to get involved by joining them.

“We are aware that from the outside our organisation appears to be shrouded in mystery and this can very often create an unfavourable impression especially as it is still an all-male organisation. But we are a group of local people and there is nothing secret about what we do. So if you want to know more about Freemasonry and really find out what they do, you are invited to go along to the Masonic Hall on Wednesday 11th, Wednesday 18th or Monday 23rd May 2016.

Protecting wildlife for the future

Wild in May

It took quite a while for botanists to work out that, in the east of the country, there was a very similar looking but completely separate species and name it Oxlip (Primula elatior). To add to the confusion, it is now known that this species can also hybridise with Primrose or Cowslip. The Oxlips on Shakespeare’s “bank where the wild thyme blows” were probably this hybrid.

Primula x polyantha

The Wildlife Trust are organising several events for May: A Dawn Chorus Walk at Ystradfawr on the 1st with breakfast; Fence repairs at Allt Rhongyr on the 6th and 20th; and a Globeflower survey at Cae Pwll y Bo near Abergwesyn on the 31st. See bit.ly/ bwtevents for more information.

This picture is of a “False Oxlip” which is actually a hybrid of Primrose and Cowslip. It’s worth looking out for at this time as it occurs quite frequently in our county, as do its parents.

The Thoughts of a Greengrocer

I call this column the thoughts of a greengrocer but I don’t think that I’ve told you where and when I do much of my thinking. The time is early morning and the place in the van between Hay and Bristol. In other words whilst travelling to market and back. On the way out there is hardly any traffic because it is so early and although most of the year this journey is in the dark it is a good time for working out future plans for the business. The next three months are the best because I drive through the dawn, a lovely time of day and believe me or not, seldom any rain. That comes later in the day. Coming back seeing the new growth and little lambs could almost turn me poetic. We are now in the productive part of the year although still a limited range available. Asparagus is here and so we don’t need to pay the exorbitant price asked for forced asparagus.Another crop now being forced is early potatoes. Unfortunately the potato doesn’t take to this treatment very well which reflects in the flavour, being too watery. These are also a terrible price, why do we insist upon eating things out of season? Is it today’s pace of life that we cannot wait for anything, or is it a form of showing off that we can afford these out of season and imported foods? Whichever it is true that the best of everything comes when it is grown slowly in it’s own time. This applies to meat as well - was there ever a fast reared chicken (ready to roast after 12 weeks) that tasted as good as a proper farmyard fowl? As May progresses we will get strawberries locally grown, plenty of mixed salad leaves, indoor British tomatoes and cucumbers both of which started in April. Apples and pears are pretty well over and we must rely on southern hemisphere fruit until autumn comes. I have already been asked for English cherries and yet the blossom has not yet come! Next month we should get beans and peas both of which are a joy, but we will have to wait longer for the runner beans which are arguably the best beans of them all. Local new potatoes will also start and then suddenly we will be spoilt for choice of good local produce. Now whilst the weather is still cool and it’s a bit early to get out into the garden we should start to clear the freezer and get jam jars etc. ready. How often have you ended up eating last year’s frozen veg. when the stuff in the garden is just about ready? Remember at the end of the month is the Hay Festival - I hope you all enjoy it, each in their own way. Article supplied by Stuart Pritchard

Willpower What does willpower mean to you? Eschewing food we know is bad for us, sticking to a fitness routine, or even starting one?! With clients I try not to use the word as it automatically implies BATTLE and hey, who needs a fight? Better to look at ‘mindfulness’ /what’s going on in our heads! But as it’s a term used so often, we’ll have a look at it! It’s examining why we go against good choices (self-sabotage) that’s of most interest to us here. Firstly: research has shown that ‘willpower’ is like a muscle. It’ll tire quickly with too much use, but long term get stronger. So if you’re going: low fat, low alcohol, no sugar, and trying to exercise 5 times a week – you’re going to exhaust your willpower resources. This backs up what I’ve said here before about baby steps. Take out one at a time and master this first. Long term you’ll get better and better at it.THEN add another. Another technique (which is brilliant for cravings), is to breath REAL SLOW! Right down to 4-6 breaths a minute! Doing this at the crucial, decision making time will take you from stressed out, to one with self-control. So effective. Note: Sleep deprived people have reduced

levels of leptin (the chemical that makes you feel full) and increased levels of ghrelin (the hunger-stimulating hormone). Even a short nap will reinforce focus. Also: Pay attention to when you’re strong/weak during the day in terms of willpower.Waking up with loads of resolve yet finding it diminishing as you go through your day? Take out temptations later in the day. Remind yourself what you’re trying to achieve and the consequent payoffs, the ripple effects your success will yield. Lastly, do you promise yourself you’ll ‘start tomorrow’, so you can be naughty today? Or that you’ll make up for what you’ve done today by being extra good tomorrow (and then STILL don’t start, or continue to misbehave?!). Me too! Ask: ‘do I want to live with the negative results of ALWAYS putting this off?! See if you can change a bad habit for a slightly less harmful one (to start).Tea for coffee for example, then take it from there. Can you find a way to distract yourself – ‘green exercise’ is a great start – just walking outside? Change your mind-set: Always late? Tell yourself you’ll be the one known to be always early from now on?! I have lots more detail on this subject! Email me, Cat on mizzfit@mail.com for my bigger article on this! The importance of pricing your property correctly! Like most things in life, everything has a value and when it comes to putting a price on a proper ty it is crucial to get the value correct. Get this right and you will be sure to engage the market and generate the interest levels required to secure a sale and get the best price. Get it wrong and you will be left wondering where all the buyers are, risking eventually having to reduce your price to achieve a sale and losing precious time in the process. So what is the key to knowing how much your property is worth? You might think about similar properties in your area and what they achieved in a recent sale? Or consider the location of your property to be the most important factor? But every property is different in some way or

another, and your property might be one of a kind and something unique? Therefore finding a comparable property can be next to impossible when determining where your property sits in the market. That is why employing a qualified, experienced, local estate agent, who knows the market and very importantly what buyers are prepared to pay is critical. McCartneys offer a wide range of services and have experienced members of staff to ensure you correctly market your property and achieve the best possible price. If you are considering selling or letting your property, then please call the Hay-on-Wye office on 01497 820778 for a Free Market Appraisal. Article written by Rob Fearnley MNAEA MARLA.

Hay has new coffee roasting company!

The founders of Black Mountain Roast, Simon Theaker and Mungo Leir, love coffee and when it comes to creating a wonderful brew, believe ‘fresh is best’. To achieve this they only roast small batches, using cutting-edge technology, with their German Probat roaster, paired with good old fashioned skills. As coffee-wizard and former chef Simon explains, “roasting is part science and part art – in other words Alchemy. The importance of properly roasted, fresh coffee cannot be underestimated; it’s a world away from the over-roasted beans and often stale grinds found in the supermarket-fare so many are used to.” Black Mountain Roast source their beans from around the world, working in partnership with special importers that trade fairly and ethically with small farms and co-operatives that excel at what they do. Sustainable farming methods mean a much higher quality coffee and thus a much better price for the farmer and workers who produce it. The company has already won a Great Taste Award for its house Espresso Blend and is quickly gathering ardent supporters of its quality roasts. The range of coffee varies throughout the year; we often forget that coffee, like anything else is a seasonal crop. You’ll find their locally roasted coffee in local outlets and cafes and direct from its website. Go and taste the difference! www.blackmountainroast.com

REVIEW

The Rhydspence Inn is under new ownership! This famous, centuries old, timbered Coaching Inn near Whitney on Wye is now owned and run by Mark Price who some of you may remember as a jump jockey with the Rimells of Kinnersley a while back. It’s a three generation family concern here and Mark gets a lot of help from his wife Lowri, his son Rhys and daughter Rhiannon and his parents Derek and Heather. Mark is the chef, but Lowri helps with those delicious puddings!

I do like lots of vegetables! The plates were hot and the food was hot. Perfect! To accompany our food we chose a very nice bottle of Portuguese Syrah.

Robert and I were given a warm welcome by Mark, his son Rhys and Nathan in the bar and we perused the menus whilst supping our Butty Bach beers. One of the other guests in the bar highly recommended the Robinsons “Flagon’ cider. The Cornish ale Doom Bar, and Thatchers cider is also on offer. It’s a lovely attractive bar and some local people were enjoying some friendly banter by the enormous log fire.

A bit later on we decided to order our puddings. All homemade and all £5.00. Robert’s lemon tart with passion fruit coulis and blackcurrant sorbet was good and sharp. My chocolate truffle torte was one of the best I’ve ever tasted. We actually couldn’t find fault with anything during the whole evening.

Starters range in price from £4.50 to £6.00. My Thai fish cake with sweet chilli sauce was lovely and Robert enjoyed his grilled goat’s cheese on a crouton with redcurrant jelly. After about the right amount of time Hayley brought our main courses. My Tournedos Rossini was divine. The Hereford fillet of beef was tender and it came with mushrooms and a Madeira sauce. Robert’s slow roasted shank of Lamb was perfect with the meat falling off the bone just as it should. It came with a rosemary and garlic jus.We were given a selection of vegetables; leeks, carrots, swede, broccoli, aubergine and new potatoes.

The meat comes from Hay butchers C J Gibbons and we can highly recommend it! Main courses vary in price from £11.00 for a salmon and asparagus lasagne to £21.00 for the Tournedos Rossini. There are also Bar and Lunchtime menus varying between £6.00 and £10.00.

If you are out and about during Hay Festival and want to avoid the busy areas at the Festival site and in Hay, I highly recommend a visit here. It would make a good stop, on the way in or on the way out. They look after you well, and there’s a great selection of board games for children, and big children! There is a children’s menu too. Mark and his team are great and work hard to create a good atmosphere for all visitors. Don’t take my word for it though, go and pop in and see for yourselves. Thanks Mark for a really lovely evening. Looking forward to the next time. Clare and Robert. Article written by Clare Williams

A Great Day Out for Animal Lovers Animal lovers of all ages would love it here. I know I did. On a sunny day at the beginning of April we were given a warm welcome by owners Ann and Bryan Wynne and their daughter Emily. This ‘Farm Attraction’ is a real family concern.

In the 1980s they started off as commercial farmers with free range laying hens, pigs, sheep, cattle and arable. Since then Wynnes have diversified and now have a new Country Store and the lovely Peckers Tea Room, together with a variety of livestock, housing for hens and small animals, equipment and supplies for sale. There’s no charge to visit this site, on the Leominster side of Dinmore, and all the animals are for sale! We

saw some adorable pygmy goat kids and yearlings, some majestic but gentle Alpacas, one of which was born only the day before our visit, Miniature Pet Piglets and Jacob Sheep. We also saw some of the beautiful laying hens and bought a tray of eggs. Would have loved to have bought some hens too!

After our ‘animal fix’ we had some delicious hot leek and potato soup in Peckers Tea Room and spent a while admiring the country clothing, cards, table and giftware in the store. The Wynne family have certainly worked hard to make this a great day out for all the family. Article written by Clare Williams

The Globe’s New Direction

Home of the Institute of Art and Ideas, the Globe at Hay is experiencing a new lease of life with fresh leadership at the helm. They’ll be delving into a more varied world of events with theatre, discussion groups and art climbing the ladder to enjoy the regularity and popularity that their music events enjoy. Community events will also take centre stage with free entry coinciding with big names. They also have an open invitation to anyone who wishes to use their space for new community events, as their Lower Gallery’s refurbishment will provide a great place to convene. It’s the End of an Era in Clyro

Full range of caskets and memorials Equine collection and cremation service Farmers sharps and pharmi waste collection and disposal service

Things are never going to be the same again in Clyro. It’s such a shame that The Bridge Stores and Post Office, which has been run by Yvonne Hood for over 35 years, is set to close for ever on 2nd June this year. It really is the end of an era and it will be missed by so many in the area, not just the residents of Clyro. Yvonne and her husband David moved to Clyro via Hereford and then Eardisley, from Cardiff in October 1981. They run the shop as part of their home. They are staying put in the house as they like it here, but can’t find anyone to take over the Post Office and Stores and this is why it is having to close. Yvonne told me that things have changed enormously since 1981. Everything is computerised these days. The products they used to offer, such as the Savings Bank, were taken away some time ago. The arrival of the supermarket in Hay caused the ending of the personal grocery van deliveries they used to take care of, but many of their loyal customers still collect groceries and other items from the shop. Sadly they will have to look elsewhere now. Yvonne would like to thank all of her loyal customers and friends who have supported them for the last 35 years. They are planning to enjoy their retirement and take things a bit easier now. We at Wye Local wish Yvonne and David a very long and happy re-tirement.

PELARGONIUMS / GERANIUMS The favourite windowsill plant of cottage gardens and grown widely in all gardens in summer. It’s so well known that it is hardly necessary to describe the large, ball-shaped heads of florets in a range of whites, pinks and reds, some with attractive markings on the petals. Many have two-colour zoning on the

leaves and there are also variegated varieties. Pelargoniums are almost all tender, evergreen plants of South African origin. When introduced to Britain they were given the common name Geranium because of their similarity to the equally wonderful, but hardy Geraniums or Cranesbills, which are also a “must have” plant for all gardens.

Pelargoniums are broadly divided into four main groups Zonal, Regal, Ivy Leaved or trailing and Scented leaved - showing how versatile the plants are. They are perfect for tubs, troughs, hanging baskets and bedding schemes in borders. Pelargoniums benefit from regular feeding, dead-

Jokes of the month by father & son (Colan & James Badham) A husband got his mother-in-law a cemetery plot for Christmas. It came with a coffin, tomb stone, the works. Next Christmas comes by and the husband gets her nothing. When the mother-in-law asks, “Why didn’t you get me a gift?” the husband says, “You haven’t used the one I got you last year!” Alfie was listening to his sister practice her singing. “Sis,” he said,“I wish you’d sing Christmas carols.”“Thats nice of you, Alfie,” she replied, “but why?” Alfie replied, “Because then I’d only have to hear your voice once a year!” Mother: “Are you talking back to me?!”. Son: “Well yeah, that’s kinda how communication works.”

Flat Battery? Mobile phone charging @ Hay Festival Site in the main entrance The Rise and Fall of the Tregunter Park Estate For many years Tregunter House was a famous landmark of Talgarth. Peter Gunter was awarded land North-West of Talgarth, now known as Tregunter, by Bernard de Newmarche, the Norman who conquered Brecknock in 1093. The estate remained in the family until Thomas Harris bought Tregunter in 1765, transforming it into a three storeyed mansion.Thomas was a brother to Joseph, Assay Master to the Royal Mint, and Howell, the renowned Methodist preacher. Thomas had made his fortune as a regimental tailor in London. In 1782 his niece Anna Maria, daughter of Joseph and wife of Samuel Hughes inherited Tregunter. Anna Marie and Eliza Hughes, were the next to inherit Tregunter in 1814. Anna Maria remained a spinster whilst Eliza firstly married Roderick Gwynne of Buckland, who died two years later in 1806, remarrying in 1818 to William Madocks. William was the creator of Tremadoc and Port Madoc in North Wales. Eliza Anne Ermine, daughter of Eliza, married twice, her second husband being John Webb Roche. Their son, Francis Roche inherited Tregunter from his grandmother (Eliza Maddocks) at the age of five . Francis was active in promoting Talgarth as a thriving agricultural town and was Colonel to F Co of the Territorial Army. He died in 1897 and his brother died two years later; both were childless. As a result various people leased Tregunter, until it was sold in 1914 to Mr Gordon from London. In 1916 he sold all the estate apart from the house. No buyer could be found for the house and eventually it was demolished circa 1924. Jill Fawke - Talgarth & District Historical Society

Gwernyfed High School Pupils who attend the school’s astronomy club at Gwernyfed High School had the opportunity to talk to Tim Peake on the International Space Station on Saturday 5th March following a number of activities leading up to the contact. The students gave a talk on the activities of the astronomy club to a packed hall before awaiting the contact with Tim. On the Friday before students worked with pupils from Builth Wells High School to make their own radio receivers from scratch. They were quite excited to hear music on their radios which they had constructed from circuit boards and a container of 15 components all needing soldering onto the board. On the Saturday the contact was eagerly awaited at the venue in Builth. When Tim’s voice crackled over the airwaves a big cheer erupted. Georgia Allen asked Tim if his senses were any different in space and he discussed how his sense of smell was less acute and it was hard to hear other astronauts over the background noise on the space station. In response to another question Tim also told Georgia that it took about 3 days to prepare for a space-walk! Meg Morris asked Tim about the nature of how fluids behave in space and he mentioned some

because the location and running of the clinic is subject to variation by its very nature. experiments they are conducting on the space station and how their result may help our understanding of how fluids work back on earth. This was a fantastic experience for all the student involved.

• There may well be a longer wait to be seen in this clinic due to the nature of illnesses being dealt with by the clinical team, or the doctor being called out on a home visit to a very sick patient.

Emergency clinic and telephone triage

Hay Town Council

The emergency clinic is not a drop in service and patients are seen according to the urgency of their condition. • The emergency clinic is for acute problems which occur “on the day”. It is run by a doctor and nurse. Please contact the reception team as early as possible. • We now have a telephone triage system in place and you may be put straight through to a clinician (doctor or nurse) to ensure that you are seen and treated in order of clinical need, and the most appropriate appointment is made. • Patients should phone for guidance from the practice team prior to presenting at the clinic,

Hay Town Council is one of the few local councils which has not increased its precept this year; this has been achieved through a genuine concern for the council tax payers in the town who are already facing a substantial increase in Powys Council tax. This has been achieved through the hard work and commitment of the town councillors who have given a great deal of time and energy to finding alternative ways to finance the running costs of all those assets which have been transferred to the local council. However, we urgently need three new councillors to join our team and support us in the work which we currently undertake. The work is interesting and can take up as much or as little time as one feels able

to give. The council meetings are thought provoking and reflect diverse views and opinions. Yes, sometimes it can be unrewarding as one cannot satisfy everyone all of the time, but we would urge anyone who is able to give a few hours a month to join us and become involved. If you feel able to help please have a word with any town councillor or express your interest in a letter or e-mail to the clerk (haytownclerk@hotmail.co.uk). Our new web-site and facebook page will be available within the next few days so anyone interested can find out more about the nature of our responsibilities and work. Please take a look and give it a go on Hay Town Council! Hay & District Dial-a-Ride Spring Trips – We still have some seats available on our next trips – to Castlefields for lunch on 13th May and to Monkland Cheese Dairy on 23rd May. Our trips are open to members only. Driving – we are recruiting volunteer drivers to join us. Training will be provided and you can work as little as one morning or afternoon per month. The service operates from Monday to Friday with occasional weekend and evening trips for local community groups. If you’d like to find out more, or spend some

time out on the buses, please get in touch. Trustees – there are 3 Trustee vacancies. Call us for an information pack if you’d like to apply. Membership – Our membership is open to anyone in need of transport, who lives within a 9 mile radius of Hay. If you need more information about our community transport service call us on 01497821616. Penyrheol Chapel Music for a Summer’s Eve at Penyrheol Chapel Hay Community Choir are coming again this month to lift spirits and voices at Penyrheol Chapel near Felindre on Saturday 21st May at 6.30pm. Musical Director, Fiona Evans, told Wye Local “we are delighted to be making our second visit to this lovely Chapel with a mix of songs to bring a smile to your feet and set your heart tapping! Hay Dial-a-Ride Not just a lift, a lifeline If you can drive from A to B, and pick up Mrs C, Mr J and Mrs P in the right order at the right time, and take them to the right place, we’d like to hear from you. Hay Dial-a-Ride relies on volunteers to drive the minibus and adapted car to provide a Monday to Friday transport service for its 300+ members. It’s a responsible job and requires some training but it’s a great thing to do for the local community. You can do as little as one day per month and we’ll work around your other commitments. Why not spend a few hours out and about on the buses to see what it’s all about? It’s so much more than just a transport service. Don’t want to drive? We are also looking for passenger assistants to help out on journeys. If you’d like to find out more, please ring Lesley on

01497 821616 for a chat and an information pack. All appointments are subject to DBS and reference and other checks.

Timbuktu My name is Alhousna, I am fourteen. I live in timbuktu (Mali) with my mother and sisters. I have three sisters, I am the oldest. My father died in 2011. My family is a small one but very organised, every one knows their tasks exactly and does it correctly.

Our next meeting on Tuesday 21st June. will be held at our new venue in the splendid Music Room of Baskerville Hall Hotel, Clyro. This excellent facility will provide a fitting location for our meetings, with coffee and lunches available. Oliver Balch will speak on ‘Pulp Fictions: South America’s Challenges in Olympics Year’ starting at 10.30am. More details next month, or from Tricia Wordley on 01497 821595.

This morning, everybody woke up at 5am. My mother prepared the bread called ‘Takoula’ and sold it. She is a bread seller, the only job she knows, she inherited it from our Grandmother. Everybody in our neighbourhood came to our house early in the morning to buy some bread for breakfast. My duty is to help my mother and deliver some bread to customers at their home. My sister Fanta sweeps the house, Aminata cleans the utensils and Assa prepares the breakfast.

Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning

At 7am when everyone had finished their duties, we met each other inside the house to prepare for school and have the breakfast. After eating, me and my sisters went to school. The school is so far from us and we usually get there late. The teacher understood because he knows our family situation and knows that we live so far from the school our mother needs our help.
