Q&A with: Andrea Mountford BSc (Hons) CKAP - Creative Kinesiologist What is Creative Kinesiology? Creative Kinesiology is new to Shropshire and uses a unique “bodytracking” approach to health and wellbeing. It is a branch of kinesiology which offers the opportunity to explore yourself at a very deep level. Ordinarily, many of the stresses which impact you negatively are difficult to identify and therefore to clear out of your system. Creative Kinesiologisy uses muscle biofeedback (gentle muscle testing) as a way to “track” into the origins of an issue and then to find out what will make the difference to you. The techniques used to release stress include bodywork techniques that originate in chiropractic work, and Chinese medicine.

Why did you become a Creative Kinesiologist? CK was the solution to my own long term un-wellness for which my GP, despite his best efforts, was unable to identify the cause or resolve. CK made such an amazing difference to my life that I wanted to offer others the sort of benefits I gained from CK and continue to enjoy. I became a student practitioner in 2016 and gained my professional qualification in July 2018.

What can Creative Kinesiology help someone with? Creative Kinesiology can help with a wide range of symptoms; a physical problem, something nutritional, an environmental influence, feelings about a past event, an inherited issue, a stress related situation at home or work, relationship issues and so on. Everything you have experienced throughout your life is held within your body. Body-tracking can help you to identify and release the unwanted or unhelpful results of your life experiences (whatever they are).

Can you provide some Case Studies? Yes, given with permission. A client - I’ll call her Maria - came to see me because she found it very stressful to go on long holidays. She constantly worried about the wellbeing of her adult children and grandchildren while away.

I used body-tracking to find the root cause of this issue. Biofeedback led us to a single sentence in a book which I read out loud. A tearful Maria revealed

that her mother had constantly made negative and very unkind references to her having been born a very small baby and had abandoned her at age 2. Maria suddenly stopped telling her story and stated wide eyed, ”I see! I subconsciously believe that I am abandoning my children when I go away!” Tracking confirmed this to be the case. Neurovascular holding points tracked as the optimum technique for Maria who is now very happy to go on holiday. And the single sentence I tracked to which allowed us to find the root cause of the issue?

It read, “Beautiful things come in small packages.”

During one of her sessions, another client – I’ll call her Liz - asked that we look at an issue she had with her right hip which had lost flexibility and was sometimes painful. The body-tracking directed us towards Liz’s relationship with her father and the restrictions which had been imposed on her as she was maturing from a young girl into womanhood.

The term “dragging a ball and chain” was used by Liz who had rebelled and had always felt she was a disappointment to her father. Acupressure points tracked as the optimum technique for this issue and at her next session Liz reported that her hip was much freer and with no discomfort.

What do you most enjoy about what you do?

Witnessing the positive changes in my clients’ lives because I know what that feels like.

Ludlow Cancer Support Group Here for you

In June 2014, members of Ludlow U3A Historical Book Club were discussing Helena Lane Community Centre in Ludlow. And as sometimes happens, concern about one issue led to the creation of ‘something completely different’.

Ludlow resident, Joan Farley, had been diagnosed with lung cancer. Social visits to St Michael’s Hospice in Hereford, to enjoy coffee and conversation, were crucial. But this meant a 50-mile trip: something was needed in Ludlow.

A committee was formed; a constitution agreed; grants applied for; a coffee morning organised; and the first meeting of the Ludlow Cancer Support Group on Friday 12th September was publicised.

12 people came. They agreed that socialising and communicating with other sufferers was vital. The

group would provide a space where members could relax, laugh, and learn about each other. It would also be a place where, when a member says, “I feel so tired”, others understood.

Today, Ludlow Cancer Support Group is thriving.

The social and relaxed environment allows it to operate on several levels: Understanding and awareness; laughter and learning; relaxation and activity; listening and being there for those who have lost loved ones.

Numerous activities are offered, and the group has its own allotment and garden – Joan’s Garden – at Wigley’s Field Allotments, in Dinham. Membership is free to anyone diagnosed with cancer, no matter when the diagnosis was made.

Defib4You...

Thanks to the generous donation from Ludlow Hospital League of Friends, 6 new CPADs (Community Public Access Defibrillators) were purchased for Ludlow last year. They are on the outside walls at the four original sites: Ludlow Assembly Rooms, Ludlow Homecare, Ludlow Mascall Centre and Rockspring Community Centre as well as two new sites:Tesco and Vision Homes,Tollgate Road.

The original 4 Cardiac Science AEDs which still have some life left in them are sited inside various buildings for use when required.

A special thank you goes to The Church Inn who have agreed to an AED being available between the hours of 08.00 - 23.00 which is a bonus for all in the neighbourhood of St Laurence. The Methodist Church also have an AED in their Vestry available whilst the Church is in use and St Peters Parish Centre have just agreed to have one there too. Many thanks to the sites and the volunteers supporting this life saving community scheme.

Ludlow Garden Club

Previously called Ludlow Horticultural Society, there was a change of name to Ludlow Garden Club in 2011.

There are now over 40 members who enjoy a programme on various aspects of gardening and garden visits. From October to April there are indoor meetings with a speaker and May to September a summer programme of garden visits. The indoor meetings are held in St Peter’s Parish Centre, Henley Road, Ludlow SY8 1QZ starting at 7.30pm.

The 2019 summer programme includes outings to Lower Hope Gardens, Ullingswick, Herefordshire and Bowbrook Allotment Community in Shrewsbury.

The monthly meetings are advertised on radio, in the local press and posters are displayed at various places in the town.

The annual individual subscription is £11 and £17 for a household. There is a charge of £3 for visitors.

What made you set up the business? Having worked for The Ink Spot since 2011, I got to know the customers and the general running of the business, so when the previous owners retired in 2015 I decided to take it on.

Winter frolics on the Teme Over the years the River Teme has always been used by local people for leisure, be it swimming, fishing or boating and at times even for skating. Winters in the nineteenth and early twentieth century were far colder than now. The river often iced over during the winter months, especially the deep waters near the castle, as did the River Corve. When this occurred, the town came out to play. Men, women, boys and girls from all social classes congregated on the ice to skate, and impromptu games of ice hockey with homemade sticks were played. People without skates could hire them for the day or just slide using their own everyday footwear.

The enterprising landlord of the Imperial Vaults at the top of Old Street even organised an ice carnival in 1895. Over six hundred people turned up to skate or cavort on the ice whilst numerous others watched from the Castle Walks. Lamps and torches lit the whole event whilst a band played music to allow couples to dance the night away.

When possible, skating also took place on the large pool in Oakley Park with large crowds often in attendance. Many from the town would also make their way out to the frozen pool at Ledwyche where an enterprising farmer charged 6d to skate in the afternoon and 3d in the evening, all proceeds being donated to Shrewsbury Infirmary. www.mortimerhistorysociety.org.uk www.ludlowhistory.co.uk

Ludlow French Twinning A special experience Many people do not know about Ludlow’s French Twinning Association or have some incorrect ideas about it. It was formed over thirty years ago by people from the Ludlow area to encourage friendship and travel between local people and those in La Ferté Macé in Normandy. Exchanges have taken place to foster relationships between families, schools and cultural and sporting organisations from the two towns. For example, they have helped and encouraged exchanges between local clubs and their opposite numbers in La Ferté Macé, such as Choral groups and Judo, Walking,Tennis and Badminton Clubs.

La Ferté Macé is in the Department of Orne in the province of Normandy. The town, together with neighbouring Bagnoles de l’Orne, is of similar population to Ludlow. The surrounding rural area is famous for its production of dairy products, cider, ‘Calvados’ and tripe. For this reason, the Twinning Association sometimes makes contacts for economic initiatives by individuals or businesses, in agriculture or crafts for example, with the help of their professional organisations. The Ludlow Food Festival each September is an example. In November last year a Twinning delegation from the Association and Ludlow College represented Ludlow at the 100th commemoration of the First World War armistice.

In May and early June, 2019, they shall be in Normandy again where they can witness the preparations for the 75th Anniversary of the D Day landings.

How it works - Organised visits usually take place in May and are spread over a long weekend (four days).

Ludlow members will visit La Ferté Macé one year with a return visit by ‘Les Fertois’ the following year. In 2019, as we have said, it is Ludlow’s turn to visit France.

Members stay with a host family, which is carefully selected to closely match the interests and ages of individuals. Ludlow families with children will therefore

be twinned with a similar family. And don’t forget youngsters go for free with parents or grandparents!

The visits usually include a dinner/social evening where all families socialise in a convivial atmosphere.

A day visit to a particular place of interest is included, such as Mont St Michel, Bayeux, St Malo, Le Mans, Falaise, Suisse Normand etc. When the French visit Ludlow, their members provide accommodation.

Often this is with the same family year after year.

At other times of the year they organise social events for members. These have included film and quiz nights, treasure hunts, barbecues, wine tasting evenings, art exhibitions and French conversation cafes. These events retain the friendship built up between visits and may take place in Ludlow or in surrounding village halls like Ashford Carbonel.

Events are organised by a committee with the support of members. New, young, members are especially welcome.

Creating much interest currently, is the presentation for Twinning members and friends of a season of wellknown French films at the Blue Boar in Mill Street. Each film has English subtitles with the next being Jean de Florette, based on the classic by Marcel Pagnol. It will be screened on March 6th at 7.30pm.The programme will continue monthly with such films as Le Fils de l’Epicier, Manon des Sources and Amelie. Entry is free.

Food and drink are available to buy.

You don’t have to live in Ludlow to be a member: they have members from Knighton, Craven Arms, Church Stretton and elsewhere. Measuring Success Success is a funny thing.To one person it could simply mean being good at what you do, to someone else it might be how many trappings they have and how much money they have have earned.

When it comes to health and fitness success can also be highly subjective and mean polar opposites to different people. So before we can measure our success we first need to decide what we regard as being successful.

A few years ago I was going through a goal setting process with one of my clients when they said that they simply wanted to become confident enough to take their child swimming. They weren’t interested in running a marathon or entering a strongman competition, just simply improving their health and confidence enough to wear a swimming costume.

Whether you are trying to ‘lose weight’ or get a ‘Personal Best’ on your 5k run, there are a number of key points that I believe will help you be successful.

COMPARE - As hard as it might be, try not to compare yourself with other people in a negative way. Aspiring to be as good as someone else is healthy but feeling inadequate because you aren’t as good as them is unhealthy. Remember, no matter how slowly you might feel you are running, you are still running faster than the person on the sofa!
