A Christmas treat, the end of an era and the start of a new chapter

Choral music lovers looking for a good start to the festive season are in for a treat on Saturday 8th December. That’s when Ludlow Choral Society will be performing Bach’s 1734 Christmas Oratorio (in English) in St Laurence’s Church, Ludlow. The choir of around 100 singers will be accompanied by a small orchestra and professional soloists. Tickets are on sale from Ludlow Assembly Rooms. The concert will be the last under the baton of Patrick Larley, who has been the choir’s Music Director for the past 22 years. During that time, the choir has performed a range of works from classic to modern, including some of Patrick’s own compositions.

A new chapter in the choir’s 160 year history will open in January 2019, with the arrival of a new Music Director, Nicola Starkie. Originally from a keyboard and string playing background, Nicola discovered a passion for choral music as an undergraduate student at Cambridge, before studying Choral Conducting at Birmingham Conservatoire. Nicola lives in Birmingham with her husband and three children.

Ludlow town has a fascinating history that stretches back almost 1000 years. Although more recently Ludlow has been prized as a tranquil market town, for many centuries Ludlow was a thriving place of national importance. From January, two local organisations will be contributing a monthly article on various aspects of the history of Ludlow: The Mortimer History Society, which celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2019, has rapidly become the most active society in the region for people with an interest in medieval history (1066 to 1500), the Mortimers and the Welsh Marcher Lordships. The Mortimers, who acquired Ludlow by marriage, rose to be one of the most wealthy and powerful families in the land, with a descendant, Edward IV, taking the crown. The Society has an annual programme of conferences, lectures and study days; organises an annual essay prize; publishes an annual Journal and other books; runs a local history course with 11 local schools; and has an informative website and quarterly newsletter. The Ludlow Historical Research Group is dedicated to researching the history of Ludlow and the surrounding area using a range of original records and other sources. BUSINESS PROFILE

Ludlow Salvage When was the business started? Late summer 2017.

What made you set up the business? We had a burning desire to be constantly stressed and scared out of our minds.

Also, my former employer of 18 years, Border Counties Reclamation, were retiring so if we didn’t start up, someone else would have, and we didn’t fancy a big ‘what if’ hanging over our heads for the rest of our lives.

List five goals on your business to-do list: Five won’t cut it, lets just say I’ve a list as long as my arm and very near the top of that list is to get a swear jar, I feel we’d profit greatly from it!

Where are you based? Plot 1, Station Yard, Station Road, Woofferton, Ludlow, Shropshire, SY8 4AW. About 1/4 of a mile off the A49.

Have any hidden talents come to light since starting the business? Pretending I’m not the boss when someone starts wanting money knocked off.

Do you have ambitions to move or grow bigger?

Yes, we are growing at an alarming rate, so much so, we are struggling to keep up. From mid 2019 we are taking on another section of yard (this will double the size of our current yard) to accommodate the sheer volume of products that are arriving on a daily basis.

Have you had any embarrassing moments while working? Too many to mention!

Two lessons having your own business has taught you? You must always be on your best behaviour in and out of the workplace. You never know if that bloke you cut up at the junction could be a customer.

Also, always carry a notepad and pen, you’re more forgetful than you think you are. Nothing is ever as bad as you think... it’s never as good either.

What is your greatest achievement in your business? Making it through the first year of course!

Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you and your business? Social media plays a big part in our business so to keep up to date with our ever increasing stock, you can find constant updates on Facebook and Instagram, which includes bricks, slates, tiles, sleepers and flagstones too. We haven’t even had time to write content for our website yet!

What do you know now that you wish you knew before starting your business? We went into business rather oblivious to the risks, ha, we still are! I think if we knew too much we would have frightened ourselves and not bothered. Ignorance is bliss as they say!

What has been the biggest help to building your business up? The amount of help we have had from friends and family has been astonishing. Even more astonishing is the amount of help we have had off people we didn’t know or had never even met before.

The support has been amazing and overwhelming.

Clock Repairing

The starting point of a repair is to investigate and analyse the problem using a mixture of training, experience and logic. Sometimes there has been a catastrophic event such as the fracture of a mainspring which releases a great deal of energy very suddenly and can lead to bent teeth on the wheels of the clock and the breakage of other parts.

In this instance the clock would be stripped and parts repaired or made as appropriate.

Often clocks will have stopped working because they need overhauling.

Clocks are machines and as such need regular maintenance in order to keep working properly.

Many clocks are left untouched for years and then mysteriously stop, which is unfortunately when that lack of maintenance has caught up with them.

Clocks involve a succession of gears so that the slow unwinding of a spring or the lowering of a weight is translated into the rather faster movement of the hands. Horologists refer to these gears as wheels and pinions. The teeth of larger brass wheels drive the teeth (referred to as leaves by horologists) of the smaller steel pinions causing the pinion to rotate more quickly. This pattern is repeated a number of times through the clock. The wheels and pinions are on axles known as arbors, and the ends of these arbors reduce in diameter to form pivots that rotate

in small pivot holes in the brass plates of the clock.

A clock has many brass parts running against steel parts - a design that is a successful way of reducing wear. Wear does still take place however, particularly of the pivots and their associated pivot holes which form bearings. Addressing this wear is a crucial part of the proper overhaul of a clock movement.

In a full overhaul the first stage is to carefully check over the movement and identify any particular issues before it is dismantled. The clock is then completely stripped to its component parts.The pivots are then dealt with as they are crucial to the long and healthy running of the clock, and have normally suffered distinct wear. They are brought back to a smooth and parallel condition by the careful use of a pivot file on them as they are rotated, this tool has an extremely fine cut and is designed to work on the hardened steel of the pivot to remove grooves and wear. They are then smoothed and burnished to a hardened finish using the other end of the tool.

This pivot burnisher is a hardened flat piece of steel which has been abraded at right angles and is moved across the pivot with considerable force as the pivot is rotated. The result is a polished pivot with a work-hardened surface.

Next the pivots will be tried in their respective pivot holes to assess wear. The pivot holes in a clock plate tend to elongate to a slot. This wear changes the meshing of the wheels and pinions and must be addressed. Worn holes are cut out using a five-sided broaching tool, and it is crucial that the original distance between pivots is not altered. Next a tapered bush of brass is hammered and rivetted in, then the correct size hole is opened out in it with a broaching tool. The hole is then burnished with a

smoothing broach to give a polished and hardened surface which gives the best resistance to future wear. An oil sink, looking like a rounded countersink, is formed in the outer side of the pivot hole. This helps to hold the oil in its correct place in the clock.

Once the pivots have been restored, the escapement of the clock is dealt with. The escapement is where the power of the clock is allowed to escape in the intervals that provide the correct timekeeping. This is where the ”tick” and “tock” comes from, caused by the impact of the brass teeth of the escape wheel hitting the metal, or sometimes jewelled, faces of the pallets. If the wear here is not dealt with then the clock cannot keep good time. In a pendulum clock the movement of the pendulum causes the escapement to operate at defined intervals, providing the accuracy. As the escapement operates and release some of the power of the clock, it gives a tiny impulse to the pendulum which keeps it swinging on a large enough arc.

This process of addressing worn parts continues throughout the parts of the clock and any striking and chiming systems. Once that work is complete

the parts are cleaned, traditionally in an ammoniabased solution. The parts are then polished, and after that it is crucial that all remnants of polish are removed, especially from the pivot holes. These are “pegged out” using sharpened dowels of softwood until no colour appears on the wood.

In a spring driven clock the springs are then lubricated and wound back into their barrels. Then the clock is carefully assembled and lubricated using specialist clock oils designed to stay in place and fluid for several years. Clocks are tested out of their case and minus their dial for a period, then with their dial on, and finally in their case.

BAND PROFILE

Vintage Jazz Revival

How many people in the band? 6 members Rob Jones (tuba), Bill Ridley (trumpet), Richard Vincent (saxophone), Matt Sanders (banjo), Steve Constance (trombone), Des Bromage (drums).

When was the band set up? 3 years ago, I advertised for musicians to form a Trad/New Orleans Jazz Band. Having lived in Northern France and played in the same type of band for 10 years, I wanted to do the same back in the UK. What type of music do you play? Popular songs from Dixieland of the 1890s through to the rise of Ragtime and New Orleans Jazz of the early 1900s and following on to the foot-tapping songs and dances of the ‘30s, ‘40s and the Trad Jazz Revival of the ‘50s and ‘60s.

Do you cover songs or play original music? We play all well-known standards, but with our own individual interpretation.

What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you whilst being in a band? We have many laughs forgetting words, our banjo player dressing up (as befits the song), getting the audience to dance (especially to the Charleston) - jokes and words relevant to particular audiences.

Where do you play? We play weekly at the Rose & Crown - Tuesdays 8.45 p.m., motoring events, private parties, civic functions, country shows, weddings, pubs etc (even funeral processions if needed), food festivals.

What are your plans for the future? To carry on improving our performance musically and to keep audiences entertained – and get more bookings!

Where are you normally when you get inspiration to write a song? We don’t write our own songs, but do alter some to give a different sound.

Out of your own songs, what is your favourite?

We do a very amusing version of ‘Sheik of Araby’ with our banjo player on vocals dressed as a rather extraordinary arab (not very PC). He also does ‘It’s a sin to tell a lie’ dressed as a vicar!

Describe your sound for someone who’s never heard you: Best description is that we play happy foot-tapping music with the occasional slow ballad and blues number.

Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you? We are not a ‘loud band’. We only use basic amplification for vocals and prefer to play in a cabaret format where the audience can chat away and dance if they wish, or even join in the singing. Our fees are very reasonable, as we play mostly for the sheer enjoyment of it!

Do any band members have any hidden talents? All our band members have many years’ experience of playing in bands, consequently all are excellent musicians.The extra talents we have are that we do vocals with most pieces, which is very unusual for the majority of Jazz bands.

What are your influences? Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Gershwin, Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald, Al Jolson, King Oliver, Kid Ory, Kenny Ball, Chris Barber, Acker Bilk.

Jennifer@Visage When was the business started? I became interested in the skin and beauty side of the industry whilst living in LA and working as a makeup artist in the film industry with celebrities like Jennifer Lopez and Harrison Ford. My business had been based in Shropshire for over 15 years, I have just recently relocated, I am now based in a beautiful, quiet part of central Ludlow.

What made you set up the business? When I realised I wanted to settle in Shropshire I wanted to offer my knowledge, expertise and enthusiasm to clients that had never experienced bespoke beauty treatments before, so I began to offer a specialised service to brides including consultations, makeup and beauty treatments. I wanted a way to use all my expertise and a goal that I feel has been achieved.

Why Ludlow? I am originally from London and had a passion for nature and the British countryside. I fell madly in love with Shropshire whilst visiting a friend who had moved here also from LA. I thought that I would try living in the area for a couple of months as I had no idea that my ambition to set up Visage would be successful, I have now lived in Ludlow for over 15 years.

I am an Emmy nominated makeup artist and have worked in all areas from film to television editorial to beauty pageants. I now have a one stop beauty and makeup studio to cater for all of my clients’ varied needs.

Who would be your ideal client? There is no such thing as an “ideal” client as clients have their specific wants and needs, I think of it as my job to help them achieve the best results. People that trust and follow my advice will benefit greatly. I like to see all my clients happy after treatment.

List one thing you wish you could change about your business: The one thing I would change about the beauty industry is the people who give it a bad name due to the fact they don’t perform the treatments professionally.

List five goals on your business to-do list: I am always looking for new ideas in the way of techniques and treatments, I like to keep up to date as my treatments have always been result driven.

What treatments do you currently offer? When I first moved to Ludlow there was very little in the way of beauty treatments or even salons. Because of living in LA – which in my opinion at that point was 10 years ahead of the UK – I wanted to start offering treatments that the British public had possibly never had the opportunity to try. I was the first beauty therapist to offer treatments like non-surgical facelifts and microdermabrasion. I also had the opportunity to study with Dr Howard Murad, who is a dermatologist and founder of Murad skin research laboratories; he is a pioneer in the use of Alpha Hydroxy Acids. I like to offer bespoke and result driven treatments in a relaxing and pampering atmosphere, as I am also qualified in the field of aromatherapy massage. I do not consider myself a high street beauty therapist as my experience and approach is quite unique. From the Garden of Eden to the Bustle of Bethlehem, it is, in effect, a modern nativity play with songs and dance. Written by local composer, Paul Henley, this is a professional production, staged, with orchestra and a cast including singers who have worked with Welsh National Opera, English National Opera, The National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company and Opéra de Baugé in France.

The show is choreographed by local professional dancer, Leianne Bates, Principal of Insteps Dance Academy in Ludlow. The performances are to raise funds for the children’s charity, Action for Children and Ludlow Methodist Church. The music is both up-tempo and melodic and the familiar (and some less familiar!) characters are there, telling of an extraordinary and miraculous event.
