Kirsty Williams A lot of people at the moment are very worried about parking in our towns. People in Brecon are particularly concerned about Duckhams yard and other areas in the town where local residents park. I am very concerned that Powys County Council has not fully considered the impact that parking has on the prosperity of local high streets.

Powys County Council have also been in my sights over their ill thought out plans to limit bin collections to be once every three weeks (they are even considering making it every four weeks).The Council have not put in place any real mitigation measures for these proposals.

I am particularly worried that we will see an increase in fly tipping and litter as a direct result of the changes.

In October the consultation closed on the Tory Governments decision to close Brecon Court. I am opposed to this move primarily because the closure fails to recognise the rurality of the area that the court serves. There is a long history of justice in Brecon, notably with the regular Assize Courts in what is now Brecon Museum which opened in 1842. The loss of Brecon Law courts would end centuries of local justice in the area and would be a blow to the whole community.

There are some question marks over the future of the Market Hall in Brecon. The market hall is vital for Brecon, after all, we are a Market Town. I recently attended a meeting with an Officer from Powys County Council regarding its future. I have asked for some clarity over the future of the hall and what the Council plans to do with it.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who, last month, helped organise or attended a Macmillan Coffee Morning. Macmillan do amazing work helping the huge number of us whose lives are touched by cancer, and the coffee mornings are a great way of raising money for them.

News from Chris Davies Your local MP

Well it’s that time again to let you all know what I have been up to in Brecon and Radnorshire.

It has been yet another very busy month in Brecon and Radnorshire. I have been traveling from the top to the bottom of the constituency, trying to get around as many events as possible.

As the show season draws to a close, I had the pleasure of attending many of these great local events that help build a big community spirit.

I was very pleased to hear that Presteigne YFC were the overall winners in the YFC Section at Kington Show - very well done to them. I have also been meeting people in Ystradfellte, Beulah and Llanafan and I also had the honour of opening Nantmel Show. I have had a brilliant time visiting all the shows, fetes and carnivals this year and I wish them all the best for next year.

I have also been at a cheque presentation for Cancer Research UK in Crickhowell, where the Crickhowell Vintage Society raised a massive £1,200. A huge well done to them. The farmers in the constituency all ventured to Builth Wells for the NSA Ram Sale, one of the biggest ram sales in the country, and I was pleased to hear that so many constituents had rams there on sale this year, proving Brecon and Radnorshire is home of agriculture in Wales.

An issue which I feel will soon be imminent is the start of Schools re-modernisation programme. The local high schools in Gwernyfed, Builth and Llandrindod are a fantastic learning environment for our children.

The “one size fits all” education model forced upon us by the Labour-run Welsh Assembly does not fit how education should be delivered here in Brecon and Radnorshire. I urge all of you to take part in the consultation process to keep our local schools open.

Where are you based? Most of my customers tend to be located within a 20 mile radius of Brecon.

Why Brecon? Brecon is my home town where I have lived all my life. I have noticed a gap in the local stove/chimney installation market for someone offering a freindly personalised and affordable service so decided to go for it!

What are some of the challenges you encountered?

As with all new businesses, the main challenge is to raise customer awareness and to build a customer base.. I have a growing list of very happy customers, and recommendations are helping to spread the word!! Although seasonal demands do affect my line of work my installation diary is beginning to fill.

Is this the first business you have launched?

Yes, although I have always fancied taking the self employment route, its taken me till I’m 40 to get round to achieving it!

What type of education/experience helped you manage/run this business? I have over 5 years experience of installing flexible chimney liners / twin wall chimney systems and both wood burners/ multi fuel stoves... This together with my Hetas qualifications have more than prepared me for my line of work.

Typical Day? Every day is different in my Work.

Once I have arrived on site and discussed the customers requirements I set up and press on with the installation... In most cases installation take between 1 and 3 days. The physical nature of the job is quite tiring, but the customers reaction to the completed job is always very rewarding and makes all the hard graft worthwhile.

Advice to new businesses in area: As already mentioned, I believe building customer awareness and advertising is key to making your business a success... If Joe public aren’t aware of your service/ shop etc then they are not going to use you! ‘Spread the word!!’

Doug Allan is one of the world’s most respected and experienced wildlife and natural history cameramen. His legendary expertise has taken him all over the world filming some of the most dangerous and majestic animals on the planet. On Sunday 22nd November Doug will be hosting an evening of personal recollections from his travels at the Theatr Brycheiniog in Brecon.

Doug’s career in filming started after a chance meeting with wildlife legend Sir David Attenborough, and his work has featured in the popular wildlife documentaries, The Blue Planet, Planet Earth, Life, Human Planet and Frozen Planet. He is often recognised for his

appearances on TV, presenting BBC programmes such as Ocean Giants and Operation Iceberg, and was profiled on BBC1’s Wildlife Cameramen At Work.

Watchdog considers 2018 deadline for mis-selling compensation

Britons who have been mis-sold payment protection insurance could have to get their claim in within the next two years or else miss out on compensation, the financial watchdog has recently proposed.

The move would be a welcome relief for banks, which have already paid out £20billion in compensation payments. While the number of complaints made is starting to slow, 883,043 cases were still opened in the first half of this year. Banks have complained that allowing customers to make complaints indefinitely makes it difficult for them to plan and move on. However consumer groups argue that if compensation is due, customers should not have their right to claim it curtailed.

PPI policies were designed to cover your debt repayments should you lose your job or become too ill to work. In theory this type of insurance was a good idea. In practice PPI was mis-sold to millions of people who either had no idea what they were buying or had little chance of making a successful claim, earning banks a fortune.

The FCA says that as the scandal drags on an increasing number of claims are made through claims management companies. The companies often take a large cut for what can be done very easily by the claimants themselves.The FCA believes that this is not ultimately in the interest of consumers. The FCA has also stated that by applying an end date to PPI claims that this will force people to seek redress before it’s too late.

Hopefully an end date would also put a stop to the relentless cold-calling!

Top 10 tips for firework safety Here’s a guide to keeping safe on fireworks night: • Plan your firework display in advance to make it safe and enjoyable.

• Keep fireworks in a closed box and use them one at a time.

• Read the instructions on each firework carefully, use a torch if you need to.

• Keep flames, including cigarettes, away from fireworks except when ready to set them off.

• Light the firework at arms length with a taper and stand well back.

• Never go back to a firework once it has been lit, even if it doesn’t go off.

• Don’t put fireworks in your pockets and never throw them.

• Point all rocket fireworks well away from spectators.

• Never use paraffin or petrol on a bonfire.

The Castle Inn is a real gem!

Situated in the Llangorse village, The Castle Inn is a real gem.

The Inn was originally 3 houses which sometime before the early 1800s was converted into an Inn. Michelle and Mike took over the tenancy of the pub in 2009 and in October 2014 they purchased it and started the renovation and refurbishment work Documents show the pub was running as an Inn in the early 1800s. Since last October they have worked tirelessly removing layers of paint from the walls to reveal some of the original windows and door lintels, from when the pub was three cottages.

Removing the carpet has revealed some fabulous flagstone. As well as re-designing the bar, they have relocated and up-graded the toilet fa-cility which allows more dining space. Michelle’s lovely touches of flowers on each table and in the windows sets the interior off beautifully.

We visited the pub on a Thursday evening and were greeted by Mike behind the bar. Even mid-week the place was buzzing with diners, several who had come from afar, as well as several local drinkers just finishing off their day.

The menu choice is extensive! Everything is made on the premises and their meat is locally sourced. A chalk-board lists all the pies on offer, from Beef and Stilton, Venison and Mushrooms and Mariners to name a few, and for those who want a real pie, you do get proper pastry on the top, bottom and sides.

Other chalk-boards list the steaks, burgers, Castle Inn Favourites and an excellent selection of vegetarian meals so it will suit all tastes and needs and the specials change frequently.

I opted for the sweet potato, chickpea and spinach curry with naan bread and rice. It arrived beautifully presented and more importantly, it was delicious.

Chris had Beef and Stilton pie, which he was thrilled with as it was a “real” pie and not just a pastry lid and the pastry was the best, very light and the filling was full of meat and extremely tasty.

Although we probably should not have, we felt we

ought to try the desserts. I chose the apple and blackberry crumble, again an individual pie with the crumble forming the pie base filled with the fruit, very unusual but it worked a treat. Chris had rhubarb crumble. Both were served with either ice cream, custard or cream and were delicious!

The atmosphere in the pub is warm and friendly and our food choices were excellent. The cost of a main course varies from £8.95 to £18.95.

We have been back again since this visit, this time taking our family and had yet another fabulous meal.

This time trying the steaks, specials and triple burger which were all again excellent, and again the staff were friendly, helpful and very efficient.

Our next plan is to try to get there for their Sunday lunch, which are proving to be very popular. Each week there is a choice of Lamb, Beef and Chicken on the menu for £10.95. I understand from another Local Beacon colleague, who went with her family this weekend, it was excellent and she is planning to go back again!

I would suggest you book whatever day or time you go to make sure that they can fit you in. Anyone looking for a Christmas venue, I cannot recommend the food, ambiance and staff highly enough, but book soon, they had their first Christmas booking in June!

Mike and Michelle seem to have hit on a winning formula with excellent food, great staff, simple but great décor and a very warm welcome.

Homemade gift ideas...

Reindeer Noses Mason Gift Jars

Edible Birdhouse If you are quick you can craft one of these DIY edible birdhouses to give as a last minute homemade gift idea for a garden lover or bird watcher. These make stunning DIY gifts for Christmas or all year round for birthdays, Mother’s Day, or any other gift occasion and make a great DIY spring craft project.

To start you’ll first need to buy an unfinished wooden birdhouse from a craft store. Drill two holes in the top of the birdhouse and string thin rope or heavy ribbon or twine through the holes and knot securely in a loop. This allows the birdhouse to be hung in a tree or another favorite location.

Next, gather all of your edible ingredients you’d like to include on the birdhouse for the birds to eat. You can buy birdseed and millet in bulk as well as apples and oranges. For the apples, slice then soak in lemon juice and salt so they don’t brown then dry in an oven on low heat. For oranges, simply slice and dry in the oven.

You can also use dried fruits you’ve purchased including cranberries, pineapples and raisins – even coconut!

Once you have all of the ingredients to go onto your birdhouse, you’ll need to make the paste to adhere them to the birdhouse base. To make the paste, combine 3 Cups Wheat Flour, 2 Cup Waters, and 3/4 Cup Honey. If honey is too expensive in your area, you can substitute it with corn syrup. You can multiply or divide this recipe to make more or less of the paste depending on how many houses you plan to make.

Now that your paste is made, all that is left is to apply the paste to the birdhouse and press the seeds and dried fruits into the paste! Allow to dry, add some decorative ribbon and a gift tag, and present to your recipient!

You will need: Chocolate balls, red gumballs for Rudolph’s nose, brown pipe cleaners, tags, hot glue gun, mason jars, ribbon, googly eyes and red bright pom poms.

Wrap tape / paper around the jar and paint brown.

Then glue on the googly eyes and nose so that your reindeer has a face!

Wrap the ribbon around the lid of the jar.

Use the pipe cleaners for his antlers. Cut them up and glue them to each other and stick them on the top of the jar.

For the labels, glue the little tag reindeer on the square tag and write your message!

Fill the jar full with the chocolate balls and red gumballs and enjoy!

and these will be settling down for winter about now in a protective silk web. They will then emerge for more delicious Scabious leaves in the spring before forming a chrysalis later on.

The butterfly used to be called Greasy Fritillary (from the shiny underwings) or even “dishclout” because of a supposed resemblance to a dirty dishcloth!

Marsh Fritillary Euphydryas aurinia Marsh Fritillary butterflies were seen atVicarage Meadows earlier this year, which was quite a surprise as the location was thought to be too remote for these not very active flyers. However, there is plenty of Devil’s-bit Scabious at Vicarage Meadows and in a few fields nearby and this is the plant that the caterpillars prefer to feed on.

This is a declining species, threatened by the loss of suitable wet habitats so the sightings are very good news and emphasise the value of this reserve as a haven for plants and insects.

There are work parties on the 3rd and 17th November for Woodland management at Pwlly-Wrach Nature Reserve. The 51st AGM of the Wildlife Trust will be held at Llandew hall on the 11th. See bit.ly/bwtevents for more information.

Brecon Outdoor Group look forward to meeting you!

Brecon Outdoor Group (BOG) are essentially a social group that was created by a few members of Brecon & District Mind in July. The idea came about through Alan Salter’s membership of a similar group, Exeter Outdoor Group (EOG) in Devon.They had up to 180 members annually and charged £7 a year for membership.

To date BOG has recorded a total number of 17 people on their events and with posters now scattered throughout the Brecon area, there is much potential to build on their success, especially as to be a part of our group there is no Membership fee.The only cost is for fuel when car sharing and of course costs for certain events.

With an aim to hopefully increase people’s health, fitness and general well being, they have devised a varied

programme of events that include regular walks of between 3 and 6 miles, many of which are considered to be fairly easy walking and flat along country lanes and good tracks. Some however may be hilly and off road on more rugged ground so stout footwear is recommended as is appropriate clothing to suit the weather on the day, gloves, hats, water proofs etc. Walks apart they have day trips, cinema and theatre events, star gazing, nature walks and meals out, the latter being very popular.

Finally BOG would like to welcome all newcomers to their friendly group, though please note that for various reasons they have adopted a “No Dogs Allowed” policy.

With Christmas coming up people may be aware of the seasonal sound of church bells ringing out across towns and countryside. Brecon Bellringers will be busy over the Christmas period making sure that all the bells in Brecon are rung to celebrate Christmas in the traditional way.

which is equipped with a computer-based ringing simulator to assist learning. It takes about as long to learn to ring a bell as it takes to drive a car. Once you have mastered the basics, you become part of a living tradition stretching back hundreds of years.

Brecon Bellringers ring the bells all the year round to mark church, civic and national events and the whole town hears what they do, but not many people know how they do it. Why not go and find out what it’s all about?

Brecon ringers would welcome you at their regular practice night at St Mary’s Church on Monday evenings, when you see the bells and a ringing demonstration and even have a go yourself if you wish. You may find there’s more in it than you thought.

The Sun shone down on the Prom Fest...

The beginning of September saw the birth of the first PromFest in Brecon, an event which we hope will be repeated next year. The main event organisers, Plan Brecon, were nobly assisted by BBNPA, Keep Wales Tidy, Dogs Trust, BVB , Brecon Fire Service, Brecon Boathouse and other helpers who all did a grand job on the day.

There were plenty of activities for all ages to enjoy from bouncy castle and face painting for the youngsters, to the music and dancing for the adults to chill out to. There was a fantastic flower and fruit mandala to be made, a duck race to be ‘run’ and my personal favourite – a Dog Show to be won!! And win we did, not only did BVB members win ‘Best Veteran’, ‘Best Rescue’, and ‘Best Pair’ but also won ‘Best in Show’.

It was a beautiful warm sunny afternoon and there was a barbecue for helpers at the end of the day.

The BVB duck race raised approx. £250 to help its general funds.

Fair Days in Brecon In November the fair comes to town. This is following a tradition which has lasted for over 700 years since the charter of 1308 which gave Brecon the right to hold a fair on the feast of St Leonard, 8th November, and eight days before and after the feast day. Fairs were also held in June and August.

The fair would have seen many stalls set up in the High Street with the chance to buy goods not normally available in town. There would be booths for sports such as boxing and, in earlier days, cock fighting and bear baiting.

On fair days there would have been a large crowd at the top of Ship Street. This was the focus of the hirings – the place where house servants and farm workers would gather to be hired for six or twelve months. The men and women would often display an emblem such as a shepherd’s crook or milking stool to show their area of skill. The hirings continued well into living memory.

Last month we mentioned five ways of telling the time in Brecon Town centre: St Mary’s Church, The Tourist Information Centre tower, The Market Hall entrance, the sundial on the wall at the corner of Lion Street and Lion Yard and the clock on The Guild Hall.

News from P.F.S. We recently held Beth’s Bier Keller, where over 150 young farmers turned up in German fancy dress to celebrate with Bethan Jones, retiring County Chair at her final event. Blas Brycheiniog prepared the food for the evening (Brecknock YFC Catering Company) and the members danced to a traditional oompa band and Stephen Tweedy disco.

The Youth Forum have started the year off with their AGM on the 17th September and have agreed on a jam packed programme of events, meetings and trips. Recently they enjoyed an evening of games and a Duke of Edinburgh taster session.

The Welsh Development Officers organised a trip to the S4C television programme Jonathan, where a group of members participated as part of the TV audience.

Several meetings have been held between the YFC Three Federations (Brecknock, Radnor & Montgomery) and Powys County Council Youth Service to discuss the proposed budget cuts of 50 percent. No final decisions have been made but it is uncertain times ahead for the YFC. So far as a County we have held our Have-a-Go competition and Stockjudging competition with excellent entries at both events.

The Harvest Festival was held on the 11th October where clubs donated Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes to Romania. The service was held at Watergate Chapel, Brecon, followed by refreshments for members, parents, friends and guests.

Every year I question will it come to fruition? Will this be the year that we don’t get to press as we just haven’t had the quality of photographs sent in to our annual photo competition? Well eight years on, we’ve not let the growing buyers down yet.

Within the 2016 Calendar we include an amazing array of scenes such as the Black Mountains, Elidir Trail, Llangorse Lake and Talybont Reservoir. We even include the Wellington Bomber Memorial.

Each of the 12 images have been taken within the Brecon Beacons National Park.

In May this year our first batch hit the shops. Many copies purchased by visitors to the area. Our aim,

for them to take them home and when they are reminded day upon day in 2016 of what a beautiful area the Brecon Beacons National Park is, they’ll return. And who knows, maybe even purchase another calendar!

This time of year we see sales take a positive increase. Local people buy them for friends and family. Some sent nearby, some sent all over the world. We have a stall at the various local fairs in the run up to Christmas. For us this is a chance to meet our readers as well as selling our calendar. We try to ask where each one is being sent if it’s intended as a present. Many go to New Zealand and Australia, last year one went to Guatemala!
