How long have you been an artist? I vividly recall experiencing the power of colour in a field of red poppies at the age of seven. I have been painting and stitching from primary school onwards, inspired by nature, home and family.

Where did you train or gain experience? I graduated with a B.A. in Fine Art from Canterbury College of Art, where Ian Dury was one of my tutors.

I worked in a Youth and Community setting, painting murals and teaching arts and crafts, while developing freestyle embroidery and mixed media work.

Artist statement: Creativity has always been important in my life; being part of a thriving artistic community in and around Brecon in such a beautiful environment is continually inspiring. I have been involved with Brecon Women’s Festival and Brecon Town Open Studios from their inception.

THE DAFFODIL (NARCISSUS) ‘Daffodils, that come before the swallow dares and take the winds of March with Beauty’ Shakespeare.

Is there anything better for Spring than the cheerful blooms of the Daffodil working their magic in so many parts of the garden? Easy to grow and flowering year after year Daffodils come in all sizes, several colours and different varieties, flowering over a long period from January to April.

Dwarf varieties such as the multi-headed ‘Tete a Tete’ work really well in pots, baskets, in a rockery or under trees and shrubs. Larger varieties make a bold statement in beds and borders.

Daffodils will grow in most soils and thrive best in sun or shade. If you missed out on planting your bulbs last autumn your local garden centre will have pot grown plants for planting out now. They should be allowed to die down naturally and fed as the flowers finish so they build up energy for flowering the following year.

So transform your garden with a much needed fanfare of colour in the early part of the gardening season and don’t forget that Daffodils also work brilliantly with other spring bulbs, Primroses, Wood Anemones and flowering shrubs such as Forsythia.

CALL NOW TO MAKE A RESERVATION The Role of Brecon in the story of Richard III [part 1] - John Morton, Bishop of Ely The ruined tower which stands on the castle mount in Brecon is called Ely Tower and the area below it is known as Ely Place.Tradition has it that it was named after John Morton, Bishop of Ely, in Cambridgeshire, an early supporter of Richard III. Richard III placed Morton in the custody of Henry Stafford, 2nd Duke of Buckingham, for opposing his rise to the throne on the disappearance and probable death of the Princes in the Tower. Stafford took him to his Lordship of Brecon where he was imprisoned in Brecon Castle in 1483.

Eventually, Stafford, one of King Richard’s main supporters, realised that he was on the wrong side and at Brecon Castle plotted the downfall of the king with Bishop Morton. Both became supporters of the Duke of Richmond (Henry Tudor), who was in exile in France.

Bishop Morton fled abroad and joined Henry Tudor who was soon to defeat Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth and to become the first Tudor monarch, Henry VII. Henry VII employed the bishop as one of his most efficient tax collectors. www.blfhs.co.uk Š Breconshire Local & Family History Society

Celebrating it’s 30th Anniversary In 1988 when the two town councils of Brecon and Gouesnou signed a twinning document no one could foresee the way in which it would develop. Since then the Association has gone from strength to strength, not only involving many people in the community but also in providing opportunities for young people.Throughout the years there have been many family visits, and also visits by a variety of groups and individuals including sports teams, cyclists, walkers, choirs, students and schools.

The latest activity saw a small group of the Brecon Committee visiting Gouesnou last November to talk to local schoolchildren. The children learned all about Brecon and Wales, and had a chance to taste some Welsh foods such as Bara Brith.The highlight of the visit to Gouesnou Library saw four of the team reading the story of the Gruffalo to a group of small children. The story was read in 4 languages - French, English, Breton and Welsh. There are, of course many

similarities between the Breton and Welsh languages.

Whilst there, members of the committee also took part in the Remembrance Day Ceremony laying a wreath of poppies on behalf of our Association.

The next visit to Gouesnou is being organised now.

In May a large group will travel there to celebrate the 30th Anniversary. This is open to everyone in the community and surrounding area. Gouesnou is in an area of outstanding coastal scenery and lovely Breton towns, and the welcome from the Gouesnousiens is second to none. This is also an opportunity for children to make new friends and explore the way of life in a different country. Many students have taken the opportunity of visiting to practise their French.

Erophila verna Common Whitlowgrass This small flower can make a brief but bright show in March. It will colonise bare patches and pavement cracks and finishes its lifecycle before pavement maintenance stops it.

Analysts warned that those investors who ploughed money into bitcoin towards the end of last year when the price was close to its peak have been ‘burnt’. Bitcoin has fallen 60 per cent since its peak just before Christmas and 40 per cent since the start of the year.

It is feared that some of the biggest losers are millennials in their 20s and early 30s who got swept up in the hype surrounding bitcoin and gambled their life-savings. Along with other so-called crypto-currencies, bitcoin has been promoted by the likes of reality TV star Paris Hilton. But regulators, experienced investors and financial market experts have long warned that the bitcoin bubble would burst – costing gullible investors a fortune.

Economist Nouriel Roubini, who was nicknamed Dr Doom after correctly predicting the 2008 financial crash, said: ‘The mother of all bubbles is now crashing.’

Let’s hope that history doesn’t repeat itself.

What does a girl do when, at just fifteen, she is forced to give up her baby for adoption? Follow the tragi-comic Shurl in her search for connection in an ever-shifting landscape.

The Friends of Brecon and District Mind have invited playwright and actor Sue Bevan to perform, her one-woman show An Audience with Shurl at the Muse, Glamorgan Street, Brecon, on Tuesday 6th March at 7pm. Lasting over an hour, there will be an opportunity for questions afterwards.

Shurl escapes the poverty of the Welsh valleys to

follow the woman she believes can save her, Dame Shirley Bassey. It draws on Sue Bevan’s own experience of losing her child to adoption as a teenager raised in a poor, tight-knit Welsh valleys community.

The universality of connection, loss and search for meaning has moved audiences in the United States, Sweden and South Africa. It received an outstanding-performance award at Prague Fringe.

Sue Bevan won the Drama Association of Wales International One-Act Play Competition.

The Friends support the work of Brecon and District Mind and raise awareness of mental health issues in and around Brecon, Crickhowell, Talgarth and Hay-on-Wye. It is open to everone and holds talks, walks, social activities and fund-raising events.

Returning for its seventh year!

Brecon Women’s Festival returns for its seventh year this March with a ten day programme that celebrates the creativity, talents and achievements of women in and around Brecon with fascinating events that illuminate, inspire and entice.

This year, to commemorate 100 years of women’s suffrage, the Festival has adopted the purple, white and green colours of the Women’s Social and Political Union, which was led by Emmeline Pankhurst. The festival launch will take place at The Hours Cafe & Bookshop on Ship Street at 7pm on Thursday 1st March with the opening of the Festival Art Exhibition.

The Hours are thrilled to be hosting this year’s exhibition which sees 25 Women Artists – among them, Antonia Spowers, Karin Mear, Pip Woolf and Velvet Cole - respond to the idea of freedom or suffrage; the exhibition runs all month.

The festival takes place in various venues across town and participants can look forward to poetry, art, food, film, yoga and shiatsu. Brecon Library and The Muse have particularly thrilling offerings this year with the Library hosting poetry, knitting and STEM events, while Polish Artists take residence at The Muse for a weeklong collaboration based on the book ‘The Women Who Run With The Wolves’. The book explores the female as represented in fairy tales, myths and legends, while challenging stereotypes and exploring iconography. Workshops on music, dance, drama and animation will culminate in a live performance on Friday 9th March. The Hours will be hosting the first in an ongoing series of supper evenings inspired by the tables of the world with this first stop being Mexico.

Alive & Kickin’ Community Choir launch ‘Lay Your Head On Me’ On the 2nd February 2018 the Alive & Kickin‘ Community Choir Brecon celebrated the national launch of its charity single and video ‘Lay Your Head On Me’ at the Castle Hotel in Brecon.

The song was written by choir leader and singer songwriter Tanya Walker for Harrison’s Fund, a charity aiming to fund pioneering research into a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). DMD is the most common fatal genetic disorder in children. Most children with the disease are unable to stand or walk by the age of 12 and die in their late teens or early twenties.

In order to help Harrison’s Fund achieve their goal of finding a cure for DMD, the Alive & Kickin’ Community Choir is donating all sales proceeds of the single ‘Lay Your Head On Me’ to the charity.

1918 was a momentous year in many respects. It was the year the First World War ended, producing huge political and social changes across the whole world, one of which in the UK was the granting for some women the right to vote. We take that right for granted now, but all-tooeasily forget the decades of struggle and campaigning by many brave women (and men) that had to take place to achieve it. So it is absolutely fitting that we celebrate the 100th anniversary of this extraordinary change.

It was the famous Liberal MP and philosopher, John Stuart Mill, who presented the first ‘mass votes for women’ petition to Parliament in 1866 and led the Parliamentary Debate on the issue the following year.

This was a time when, believe it or not, women were even barred from pursuing higher education. So this was a very radical proposal and it was another 42 years before women of 30 and over were allowed to vote in a General Election and stand for election to Parliament; and another 10 years before all men and women of 21 and over were eligible to vote.

Yet the journey is far from over. Despite the progress towards equality of the past 100 years women are still under-represented in the upper echelons of most business sector and indeed public life in general. Barely a third of MPs at Westminster are women. I am proud to say that, in stark contrast to Westminster, the National Assembly for Wales has achieved near gender balance at each election since its formation in 1999. This is good, but the fact is that for women the task of getting elected to local and national government is still tougher than for men.This is very much unfinished business.

As is the issue of the age at which citizens have the right to vote. Just a couple of weeks ago the Welsh Government announced plans to reduce the voting age at local council elections to 16, which I warmly welcome, but only as a start. It is surely not right to expect 16 and 17 year olds to be able to work, pay income tax, get married, have children and join the armed forces, yet have no say in how their money is spent and their lives influenced by politicians. Bringing the voting age down to 16 for all elections would at last complete the job of creating voting equality and empower our young adults. What better year to achieve this than 100 years after 1918?

News from William Powell Welsh Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Talgarth As I write, we are moving into the season of Lent, which for some of us involves abstaining from something we enjoy, and for others the taking on of a new activity or challenge. Whichever category we happen to fall into – or indeed, if we simply carry on regardless – Lent and the weeks leading up to Easter - give us the opportunity to reflect and to gain some much needed headspace in the bustle of everyday life.

Recent weeks have also brought positive news for two exciting local projects. Firstly, the Bronllys Wellbeing Park has announced its appointment of Project Development Officer, Jon Adams. Mr Adams is based at the Bronllys Hospital site and will be undertaking a range of feasibility work to realise the potential of Bronllys Well-being Park. The post is funded by Arwain, the Rural Development Plan for Wales (RDP), an initiative of the Welsh Government, in partnership with the European Union and promises to provide significant impetus to the project.

Secondly, the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority has committed, via its Sustainable Development Fund, to support an in depth study into the potential locally for an innovative liberal arts university, the Black Mountains College. It is to be developed on principles of sustainability and rural resilience and aims to drive regeneration locally. The award, made by the whole National Park Authority at a special meeting last month, gives the project a major boost and enables, amongst other things, the development of a comprehensive business plan. Both projects enjoy strong support from Powys County Council and have been praised by the Welsh Future Generations Commissioner, Sophie Howe.

A rarity for Brecknock Sinfonia

Dvorak’s ‘New World’ Symphony and Vaughan Williams’ ‘The Lark Ascending’, two of the best loved works in the classical repertory, are at the heart of Brecknock Sinfonia’s March concert. ‘The Lark Ascending’ recently came top of a BBC poll to find Britain’s most popular piece of classical music, and it is easy to see why; while the orchestra plays a dreamy folk song melody, the solo violin soars ever higher in imitation of the lark in a spring sky. The orchestra’s distinguished leader, Laurence Kempton, is the soloist.

Dvorak’s Ninth Symphony, ‘From the New World’, was written when he was in America, and is said to incorporate both Native and African American melodies, although Dvorak insisted that they were all original but that he had absorbed the musical language while he was there. They are certainly memorable and made the symphony an instant success, a popularity it enjoys to this day.

2018 is the centenary of the death of Sir Hubert Parry, best remembered today as the composer of ‘Jerusalem’ and ‘I was glad’. His output was more substantial and he was influential as a teacher to Vaughan Williams and Elgar. ‘Symphonic Variations’ is an attractive example of his work, richly orchestrated and majestic.

The conductor is Michael Bell, recently awarded the MBE for services to music.
