Welcome to our Spring issue. Whilst I’d love to say I have the joys of Spring in my step, recent news from Powys County Council has made me angry and sad beyond belief. I will be writing my letter to Cllr Arwel Jones at PCC and providing a copy to Gwernyfed High School.

This letter will contain factual points why my children will not be enrolled at the Brecon Campus. From my understanding these closure plans are able to go ahead based on PCC giving forecast figures of pupils attending the new proposed High Schools. So if the reformation of Gwernyfed & Brecon or Builth Wells & Llandrindod doesn’t work for you and you will be sending your child(ren) elsewhere - be sure to state this in your letters. To help construct your own letter, please look at campaign details on the various High School websites. Turn to pages 18 & 19 for the full article.

Rant over and moving on to more positive items ... the team have been out and about collating various information we feel you’ll find useful.

On page 5 you will see an article about the Llandrindod Youth Market on Saturday 26th March.These young group of people are an inspiration. Have you ever thought about Fostering? Turn to page 8 & 9. Heard of a Night Nanny? I hadn’t, see page 10 (especially if you lack sleep!). On page 21 you will see some examples of local photographer Billie Charity, book a session with Billie to capture those all important family memories.

Quality play opportunities!

Brecknock Play Network is a voluntary organisation committed to assisting local communities develop quality play opportunities for the benefit of children, carers and young families.

They will be running free open access play sessions during March and the Easter holidays.These sessions are aimed at 8-13 year olds. Under 8s are welcome but must be accompanied and supervised by a responsible adult.

Some of the activities being offered include den building, giant bubbles, arts & crafts, circus equipment, dressing up, campfire cooking plus lots more!

Please note that some of these dates may be subject to change.

Brecknock Play Network also run a Pop Up Play Session for 0-4 years every Tuesday during term time 10am-12noon at The Muse, Glamorgan Street, Brecon - £2 per family.

EGGstraordinary Easter at Eastnor Castle

The much-loved family treasure hunt at Eastnor Castle, Ledbury, will be taking place over the Easter weekend every day from Good Friday 25th March to Bank Holiday Monday 28th March between 11am and 5.30pm.

This year’s hunt is about EGGstraordinary Eastnor celebrating EGGstraordinary people! Visitors will need to find dressed up Easter chickens and bunnies to solve clues about remarkable sportsmen, poets, and inventors to reveal one very famous person!

The Castle General Manager David Littlewood says “This is our favourite weekend of the year where local families come to Eastnor Castle to enjoy the annual treasure hunt and this year it’s all about extraordinary people! We have lots of fun events planned for this summer but we also want our visitors to enjoy the attractions that are always here so we’ve introduced a brand new Woodland Play Area this year which we hope the children will enjoy playing in. This is our 127th year of opening and we always look to include something new every year to ensure our visitors have a great time while they are here”.

Every child taking part in the EGGstraordinary Easter Hunt will win a chocolate treat and there will be a draw at the end of each day when one lucky family will win a giant chocolate egg in a basket! In addition, the Knight’s Maze, junior assault course, Land Rover Little Off-Roaders, adventure playground, mini zip wire, castle shop, ice cream parlour and tea room will also be open throughout the weekend.

Calling All Under 25s for Third Youth Market Llandrindod this Spring!

Registration for the third Youth Market Llandrindod is open and is seeking applications from industrious under 25s in Powys who want to be part of a lively, fun and supportive day of trading and performances on Easter Saturday, the 26th of March 2016, in the Coop Alley in Llandrindod Wells.

If you know anyone who is aged between 11 and 25 and based in Powys then they can be part of the fun by running a stall at this community focused and family friendly event.The Easter extravaganza is a chance to try out any idea they have had for a business, or simply sell their craft, skills and services.Youth Market Traders do not need any experience as the Youth Market is designed to help young people ‘give it a go’, make new friends, have a good day out and earn some money.There is no charge for a pitch, so all they need to do is come up with an idea and register in order to secure their place.

There is also space for budding young performers to hit the stage and share their talent with the people of Llandrindod and the surrounding area. If you know anyone aged 11 to 25 who is in a band, sings in a group or could even showcase their skills with a violin, then the performance stage is for them.

The Youth Market project was launched in 2015 by Jude Boutle, Llandrindod’s Town Champion, to open doors for young people in the town and to give people yet another reason to visit Llandrindod and support local shops. The idea quickly gained traction with local organisations and individuals, particularly appealing to the under 25s who created, gathered and curated items to sell at the very first Youth Market which was held in September 2015 and opened by Kirsty Williams AM. At the past two markets, stalls holders have included Rhys Gough (13) and Felicity Bulbulia (14) selling delicious popcorn, Ben Williams (14) who uses the opportunity to advertise his ‘Helicopter Disco Service’ and sell some yummy cakes, Amy Price (23) who had sold out of her beautiful knitted items by the end of trading and Rhys Perkins (15) whose customer base for his gardening business has increased hugely through his success at Youth Market.

This time, the reins have been held by a committee of under 25s, who have held meetings, discussed ideas, managed the website, booked equipment and

created plans for the third Youth Market this Easter, with support from a small team of volunteers. The Easter Market looks set to be a real treat for the senses, with involvement from even more young people from Llandrindod and the surrounding areas, as well as local groups such as the Youth Club.

Jude Boutle, Llandrindod Town Champion comments: “We knew it could be popular to give young people a platform to run their own business for a day in Llandrindod. The town is so community focused, with a good array of independent shops, but no real opportunity for young people to start something new.

We wanted to help them create something that they could run, manage and maintain themselves and this third market is a huge step in an exciting direction!”

Ben Williams (14), member of the Youth Market Committee also comments: “I knew I wanted to be part of the Youth Market from the first moment I heard about it, I love getting involved in projects that benefit the community and this was a real chance to not only take part but to try my hand a running a market stall! It was brilliant fun and the atmosphere on the day was amazing, with loads of young people and everyone coming to have a look! I’m really proud to be involved in running this third Youth Market and we’ve already got plans for more!”

Easter ‘Wild Wednesday’ Fun!

Crafty youngsters are invited to visit the award winning, Old Railway Line Garden Centre to enjoy two fun filled workshops this Easter school break.The Old Railway Line Garden Centre, located between Brecon and Hay-on-Wye, host a different workshop for children every Wednesday of the school holidays.

Manager, Katie Eckley explained: “We know it can be hard to keep the children entertained during the school holidays which is why we introduced our popular ‘Wild Wednesdays’ a couple of years ago.

“On 23rd March we have a fun Easter themed workshop planned which includes decorating an Easter bunny to take home and a hunt around the plant area. Also decorate a pop-up Easter card and enjoy other Easter themed crafts!

“The workshop on 30th March will see the return of the popular ‘Farmyard Fun’ workshop.

This event will include decorating a piggy bank and visiting pet lambs, chicks and rabbits! There will also be other fun crafts to enjoy and a farmyard animal hunt around the plant area!”

The workshops cost just £4 per child including all materials needed to take part. Pre-booking is required on-line or by calling 01497 847055 as spaces are limited and please be aware that all children must be accompanied by an adult.

• If you have a large cardboard box, give your child some crayons or pens and ask them to sit within the box and colour away. Hours of fun.

• Tape a square on your floor so children can help sweep the floor. The aim is for them to sweep the mess into this square. It will be a bit of a game for them, and you get a little help.

• Draw a chart on the side of your children’s medicine and mark off each dose as they have it.

• Glue over the holes in bath toys so water can’t get in and create mould. Beats having to clean them every week or so, or throw them out.

• Use a cereal container will a small bag inside for rubbish in the car.

• Ensure your kids put their shoes on the right feet with the help of a sticker cut in half. The sticker will only match if you line up the shoes to the right feet.

• Permanent marker on wooden furniture? Not a problem, toothpaste will get it off.

• Remove crayon from walls with WD-40 • Add 3-4 dollops of different coloured paints into a zip lock bag and tape to a window. Plenty of no mess fun and easy to clean when done.

• Frozen marshmallows make a great ouchie pack when placed in a clear plastic bag. Soft and not too cold.

• Put dots on the tags of your children’s clothes with each child having a different number of dots. Makes sorting clean laundry a breeze.

• When at the beach, use an unused nappy, insert your valuables, roll it up and never have anything stolen from the beach again!

Recipe: Soda Bread “ This is made with baking soda rather than yeast and the acid in the buttermilk, combined with the baking soda is what makes it rise. No kneading required. Not to be confused with Sourdough bread which is made with a starter and a long, slow, fermentation process. ”

Ingredients:

Scooping Station:

A Sensory Pouring Activity Materials under the bed storage tub funnels scoops Misc scooping materials, like rice, beans, quinoa

500g Talgarth Mill Welsh Flour 10g salt 4 teaspoons baking powder (this contains baking soda) 300ml buttermilk (if you don’t have buttermilk you can make your own substitute by squeezing the juice of a lemon into a measuring jug and making up to 300ml with milk) A baking sheet lined with parchment paper Extra flour for dusting the top

Method: 1: Preheat your oven to 200C or Gas Mark 6.

2: Tip the flour, salt and baking powder into a clean bowl.

3: Add 300ml buttermilk and mix to combine.

The mixture will be quite moist and resemble scones rather than bread.

4: Tip the mixture onto your work surface and divide in two. Shape into rounds approximately 5cm high. Place onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving room for them to spread. Dust with flour. Slash heavily with a sharp knife across the top to form a cross shape.

5: Bake in the centre of the oven for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the base.

6: Cool on a wire rack. Best eaten slightly warm with butter on the day of baking. Unlike yeasted breads this does not keep well.

The basic idea behind this is to let the toddler experiment with scooping and pouring solid materials. Put each item in a separate plastic container with a few scoops for each. Set up bottles with funnels for even more enjoyment.

The area around the project stays “reasonably” clean. All these materials hoover up well so any spill over won’t concern parents but you could put down a beach towel or two and that would keep this toddler activity totally clean.

By the next day, all the pouring items (rice, salt and corn meal) will be totally mixed together, don’t stop the fun there ...

For Day 2 get construction toys or play figures in on the action too. It’s always a win when one activity turns into a completely new activity.

PCC Press Release: Secondary school plans to go out to consultation Formal consultation on plans to overhaul secondary schools in south and mid Powys have been given the go-ahead, Powys County Council has confirmed.

The council has been reviewing secondary schools across the region to strengthen provision and provide a service capable of delivering full national curriculum with available resources and meeting the challenges of 21st century education.

Yesterday (Tuesday 23 February), the council’s Cabinet received the recommendations of the Schools Organisation Review Panel in respect of four secondary schools in mid/south Powys.

In respect of Brecon and Gwernyfed High Schools the Cabinet agreed to commence formal consultation on: • The closure of the two schools and to establish a new English-medium 11-16 school that will operate across the current sites of the two schools from September 2017; • From the September 2017, post-16 provision (academic and vocational) to be delivered by NPTC Group of Colleges in Brecon; • From the September 2017, Welsh-medium secondary education to be delivered at the Builth Wells site of the proposed new school (one school over the two sites) in Mid Powys • To close the school sites at Gwernyfed and Brecon upon the opening of a new build campus in Brecon, in 2019/20.

In relation to Builth Wells and Llandrindod High School, Cabinet agreed to start formal consultation the closure of Builth Wells High School and Llandrindod High School and to establish a new dual-stream 11-18 secondary school that will operate across the current sites of the two schools from September 2017.

Cllr Arwel Jones, Cabinet Member for Schools, said: “The proposals we will consult on will create a critical mass of pupils that meets the council’s 600 pupil threshold at key stage three and four needed to meet the School Reorganisation Policy.

“The proposal provides an opportunity for learners to have a broader post-16 curriculum and will 18

improve cost-effectiveness and efficiency and reduce overall surplus places.

“The proposals will also deliver a broad Welshmedium curriculum in a central local for mid and south Powys. The move will improve costeffectiveness and efficiency, eliminate maintenance costs at both schools and remove surplus places.

“Decisive action is needed in the region to strengthen our secondary provision, three of the four secondary schools are in special measures and the fourth is subject to Estyn monitoring. We must take action for the sake of our young learners.

“We will consult with all stakeholders on these proposals and our consultation arrangements will be publicised shortly.”

I am sure you are now aware that the Cabinet of Powys County Council have moved a step closer in closing a number of our local High Schools and Primary Schools. The cabinet meeting, which I watched via web cast in London, was a complete debacle and the decision to move to formal consultation was a forgone conclusion before the meeting had begun. This proves how little empathy and understanding the cabinet have for the children and young people of Brecon and Radnorshire.

Over the last couple of weeks I have been meeting with the Head Teachers and Chair of Governors of all the High Schools under threat of closure. The most striking thing to emerge from these meetings is that Powys County Council are not listening to the professionals on the front line and are hell bent on closing our schools without looking at any other alternative ways of delivering our children’s education.

Other proposals have been suggested to the Education Department, and the Portfolio Holder for Education, but have been brushed aside. Yet

again they are not listening to the parents and the people delivering education to our children.

As we now enter the formal consultation process I am urging all pupils, parents, community groups and stakeholders to engage in the consultation process and make representations to the council and to challenge their proposals with strong, factual arguments by comparing their proposals with their own School’s Transformation Policy and the Welsh Government’s Schools Organisation Code. Powys County Council have a track record of not following the correct procedures and cutting corners to get what they want. By comparing their proposals with the policies, compelling arguments can be made to keep our fantastic schools open.

Many pupils who live within the Gwernyfed catchment area have had the threat of school closures looming over them all the way through their time in school and the stress and worry Powys County Council have inflicted on our children is completely unacceptable.

Powys County Council say that the proposed transformation is to improve the education of our children but from what I saw at the cabinet meeting and from consulting with parents, teachers and governors this whole exercise is simply a cost cutting measure. A measure that is being tested on schools in Brecon and Radnorshire before the Montgomeryshire dominated cabinet start to reorganise their own schools in the north of the county.

I now, yet again, urge everyone to engage in this process and send all your representations to Cllr Arwel Jones by post (Attn: Cllr Arwel Jones, Powys County Hall, Spa Road East, Llandrindod Wells, Powys, LD1 5LG) or via email (cllr.arwel. jones@powys.gov.uk) and complete the online consultation survey at www.powys.gov.uk.

It is essential that we now stand united to fight these proposals and we must continue to support our schools and not accept the ludicrous proposals put forward by the Council. All politicians within Brecon and Radnorshire from Community Councillors, County Councillors to our Assembly Members, and to myself as the MP, we must put aside our political differences and work together to fight these proposals. By working hard and standing together as a community we can keep our schools open.

Book Review: The Story of Life By (local) authors Catherine Barr and Steve Williams

At first, nothing lived on Earth.

Natural and relaxed family portraits Billie loves shooting informal ‘candid’ people shots, that capture the individual’s character in a positive and honest way.

For portraits, she prefers to shoot using natural light and surroundings - perhaps a location of your choice like your favourite woodland, riverside walk, mountain spot, or at an event.

During the session, Billie will capture lots of natural reportage style photographs of you and your family and friends spending quality time together, as well as more structured group shots.

Billie and her husband moved from London to Herefordshire 12 years ago, and they have two young daughters. ‘I grew up around here and know plenty of interesting backdrops for family portraits. Also, with two daughters of my own, I have learned several tricks for capturing children’s characters in a non-cheesy way.’

Billie also accepts commercial commissions, and her photos have been used by lots of different organisations, including the national press, Faber, Country Living, the Canal & River Trust, and various bands and tourist venues.

Michaelchurch Escley Primary and Preschool - They have been very busy!

They have been very busy up at Michaelchurch!

Preschool have been observing the changes in the season and will soon be planting early seeds to watch the flowers growing as spring progresses. The children will also be learning about animal habitats and footprints, looking at the animals that live in our local area.

In school, Oak Class are now fully fledged journalists after completing a highly exciting workshop with Editor in Chief, Toby Murcott. The children investigated and reported on the Crimean War which they are studying this term and are finding fascinating.

Reptile Expert Professor Jones came to talk to the children of Sapling class, bringing a load of the fascinating

creatures along with him.There were several pythons, a tortoise, a bearded dragon and a monitor lizard which the children were amazed by.

Acorn class are now the proud owners of a spaceship that they have built themselves as part of their ‘What is it made of’ topic. They have also been conducting some very interesting science experiments which has seen them learning about ice, strongest materials and what happens to food as it decays.
