Cardiff Set to Host the 2027 EuroGames

In 2027, Cardiff will host Europe’s biggest annual LGBTQ+ multi-sports event: the EuroGames, which is governed by the EGLSF (European Gay & Lesbian Sport Federation). Up to 10,000 athletes from across Europe are expected to compete in events across the city in the EuroGames, first staged in 1972 to promote inclusion and integration in sports.

Cardiff’s bid emphasises its vibrant LGBTQ+ community, aiming to create an inclusive environment for athletes and spectators alike. With this milestone, Cardiff reinforces its position as a leader in promoting equality and acceptance, setting a precedent for other cities to follow in celebrating diversity through sports.

The Tales & Triumphs

Jess Fishcock MBE is undoubtedly one of Cardiff’s greatest sportspeople. Wales’ most capped footballer has had an electric career that has led her to be the very first Welsh player, male or female, to reach 150 caps for their country, won against Kosovo in the second Euro 2025 qualifying game.

Jess, hailing from Cardiff, began her football journey playing with her siblings before joining Cardiff City FC at age seven. She made her senior debut at sixteen and immediately showcased her talent, scoring 19 goals in 23 appearances in her debut season. Her exceptional skill earned her a spot on the Wales under-19 team, marking the beginning of her enduring presence in the Wales national team.

Venturing beyond her hometown, Fishlock’s talent caught the eye of Dutch champions AZ Alkmaar in 2008, marking her as the first overseas player in the Eredivisie. Her time with AZ Alkmaar saw her claim back-to-back league titles, solidifying her reputation as a formidable midfielder.

Jess made a significant impact in the FA Women’s Super League with Bristol Academy WFC, earning multiple awards including Club Player of the Year and Fans Player of the Year. She was also named Welsh Women’s Footballer of the Year in 2011. Continuing her success in 2012, Jess played globally, contributing to clubs like Melbourne Victory and Glasgow City. Currently, with Seattle Reign FC in the NWSL, she remains a key player, helping the team win the NWSL Shield and securing a spot in the league’s Best XI team.

Off the pitch, Jess remains a powerful figure whose influence reaches further than football. Jess has been a role model for the LGBT community across the world and in 2018 she was awarded an MBE for her services to women’s football and the LGBTQ+ community. As she succeeds the 150 mark of caps for Wales and prepares to captain Wales for the Euro 2025 qualifiers, it doesn’t look like Jess Fishcock will be stopping any time soon.

Joe Cordina has undeniably made his mark in the boxing world. Nicknamed the ‘Welsh Wizard’, Joe was born in Cardiff and began boxing at 15. After training at St Joseph’s ABC in Newport and quickly skyrocketing to high ability, his extraordinary talent led him to win a national title and to join the GB Boxing squad in 2010. According to Joe, he loved every minute of it. Not only that, but he was incredibly successful, as was the rest of the GB team.

Joe was the first British boxer to appear in the World Series of Boxing, ensuring that he was one to watch by defeating Eric Fowler in the British Lionhearts’ debut. He continued to have a stellar record of matches, taking home the bronze at the Commonwealth Games in 2014. Then, in 2015, he defeated Georgia’s Otar Eranosyan to be crowned European Champion - an amazing achievement.

After representing Team GB in the 2016 Rio Olympics, Joe transitioned to professional boxing and has excelled ever since. He holds titles such as the WBA International Lightweight, Commonwealth Lightweight, British Lightweight and WBA Continental Super-Featherweight. Notably, in 2022, he became the IBF World Super-Featherweight Champion after defeating Kenichi Ogawa with a KO in Cardiff, a significant achievement in front of his hometown crowd.

Since then, despite suffering a hand injury that stripped him of his belt, he has defended this title to become a twotime IBF World Super-Featherweight Champion and has incredibly retained a 100% winning streak in his professional boxing career.

Joe Cordina’s next fight on May 18th against Anthony Cacace at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, is one not to miss. It will be part of an explosive night of boxing alongside Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk for the world heavyweight titles. If victorious, Joe will be chasing a unification fight to procure another belt and title. One thing’s for sure - Joe Cordina is a boxer that you don’t want to take your eyes off.

Lauren Price MBE

Lauren Price is another athlete battling it out for a boxing World Championship title to add to a decorated list of achievements that she already holds in multiple different sports.

Born in Newport and raised in Caerphilly, Lauren excelled in various sports including football, netball and kickboxing. At the age of 13, she competed in the 2007 Kickboxing World Championships in Athens, winning the silver medal despite facing opponents twice her age. She became the youngest-ever competitor in the British Championships and went on to win four world championships and six European championships in kickboxing.

But one sport wasn’t enough for Lauren and she also pushed on with a football career. Scouted by Cardiff City for the under-16 team, she progressed to the senior team and helped them to win the Welsh Premier Women’s Football League. As well as playing for the Cardiff team, Lauren played in the Wales under-17s team, and Wales under-19s team (which she also captained). She then went on to win two senior caps in 2012 and 2013 playing for Wales’ Women’s Football team.

In 2014, Lauren shifted her focus from football to boxing, a sport she had started as a teenager. At 17, she participated in an amateur boxing bout and later won a bronze medal at the Women’s European and Youth World Championships. This marked the beginning of her success in boxing. At the 2014 Commonwealth Games, she made history by becoming the first British woman to win a boxing medal, securing the bronze.

Four years later, Lauren continued her remarkable journey, winning gold at the Commonwealth Games, European Championships and her first World title in 2019. However, her crowning achievement came in 2021 when she became the first Welsh woman to win a gold medal in boxing at the Olympic Games. Her outstanding accomplishments earned her global recognition and an MBE in the 2022 New Year’s Honours list.

Now, Lauren is preparing to challenge USA’s Jessica McCaskill for her Women’s Welterweight WBA, IBO and Ring Magazine’s World Titles. On the 11th of May, Lauren will attempt to continue her streak of six straight wins since the Tokyo Olympics as she takes on McCaskill - at no other location than the iconic Utilita Arena, which proves to be a symbolic nod to her Cardiff roots.

Louis Rees-Zammit

Transitioning from Cardiff’s boxing champions, Louis Rees-Zammit emerges as a prominent figure in the Welsh sporting scene. With his recent decision to pursue an NFL career with the Kansas City Chiefs in America, it seems particularly pertinent to look back on how growing up in Cardiff has shaped his career.

Renowned for his exceptional speed, Louis’s talent was evident from a young age, leading to opportunities with Cardiff Blues and Welsh age-grade teams. But, at 16 he moved away from his home in Cardiff. Instead, he relocated to England for schooling at Hartpury College where he thrived, transitioning to a winger and excelling as the top try-scorer. His success attracted attention, earning him spots in England’s training camp before ultimately representing Wales at the under-18 level.

After a tour with the Welsh under-18s in South Africa, Louis returned to Cardiff following college. His close-knit family support was crucial as he embarked on his career. The next step? Joining Gloucester. Impressing coaches in the A-League led to his debut in both Gloucester and the Premiership. Despite being just 18 and facing seasoned rugby players, Louis embraced the challenge. Playing alongside his childhood idols, he quickly rose to prominence, earning a spot in the Welsh team before turning 19.

After having been scouted from Gloucester and pulled up to the Welsh team, Louis was put through his paces as he adjusted to the new calibre of training and games. His adaptation was swift and after he was kept on the bench for the 2020 Six Nations, Louis went on to not only play in the 2021 Six Nations but also to take home the Try of the Championship Award. After the Six Nations, Louis’ journey reached new heights with selection for the British and Irish Lions Tour to South Africa in 2021, fulfilling a lifelong dream.

Following a successful stint with the Welsh rugby team, which included him featuring in the 2023 Rugby World Cup, Rees-Zammit has embarked on a new chapter by transitioning to American football. In January 2024, he signed with the Kansas City Chiefs. Inspired by his father’s background in American football in the UK, Louis is determined to elevate his career once more. With pre-season training on the horizon, he aims to secure a spot on the 53-man roster for the upcoming 2024/25 NFL season. As well as launching Savitar, the drinks brand that’s seeking to revolutionise energy drinks in sport, Louis isn’t letting himself be put into a box. A seemingly unstoppable sportsman in everything he does, at 23, Louis Rees-Zammit has an electric future ahead of him.

What’s next for all of these sporting superstars? I guess we’ll have to watch this space!

GAbriella Cugno

With 15 years of experience as a pastry chef and chocolatier, Gabriella Cugno has worked in esteemed high-end restaurants, patisseries, chocolateries and top-rated five-star hotels globally. Over her career, she has garnered multiple prestigious awards, such as the UK & Ireland “Junior Chocolate Master” and “Young Pastry Chef of The Year.”

Often likened to the real-life Willy Wonka, Gabriella has officially solidified her claim to that title. The Cardiff-born chocolatier is the creative genius behind the confections in “Wonka”, the latest film featuring Timothée Chalamet that delves into the origins of the legendary candy wizard. We sat down with Gabriella to learn more about her incredible career.

What inspired you to pursue your career and how did your journey lead you to work in high-end restaurants and patisseries around the world?

“I’ve always had a passion for cooking and feeding people, especially when it comes to sweet treats. With a strong background in the arts, I find the creative process fascinating and chocolate, in particular, is a magical ingredient for me.

While I was still in school, I worked at various restaurants in Cardiff and found joy in it, but I wasn’t sure how to turn my love for pastry and chocolate into a career. Eventually, I went to London for some work experience since there weren’t many opportunities in Cardiff. I did an internship and attended culinary school one day a week. Afterwards, I moved on to work at the Ritz. It was a challenging but rewarding experience, although we didn’t work with chocolate as much as I hoped. In the hope of learning more, I entered the Junior Chocolate Masters competition and ended up winning.

After some stints at different hotels, I decided to return home to Cardiff and set up my own business. Although London offered fantastic opportunities, my heart belongs to Cardiff and being close to my family.

As a freelancer, I’ve had the opportunity to cater for some incredible events, from weddings for some of the wealthiest families in the world to collaborating with a company in Trinidad and Tobago to develop new chocolate recipes with local farmers. It’s been an exciting journey with a wide variety of experiences.”

The big interview 16 | Cardiff Life

Working directly with farmers and producers sounds fascinating. How it has shaped your understanding of chocolate production?

“Making sure I use high-quality chocolate that’s sustainably sourced is key. You wouldn’t believe the amount of effort and skill that goes into making chocolate and it’s crucial to recognise the hard work of the farmers behind it all. I love travelling to these countries and discovering the amazing variety of fruits and spices growing alongside the cocoa. They often add such unique flavours to the chocolate! I’m definitely eager to do more of that kind of exploration in the future.”

Being the chocolatier for WONKA must have been a dream come true. Can you tell us about your role in designing and making the chocolates for the movie?

“Out of nowhere, I received an email from Warner Bros. They pitched the idea of me creating chocolates for the film, so I had a meeting with the prop master and set decorator to discuss what was possible and what they were looking for. Initially, we thought it would only take a few weeks, but once we got started, it became apparent that it was a much bigger job. So, I spent the entire year on set, pausing everything else I was working on. They even built a kitchen for me at the studio!

They gave me the script, the name of the chocolate and its purpose. From there, I let my creativity run wild. I had to figure out how to capture the essence of the chocolate based on the words and emotions in the script.

After about three weeks, I had the nerve-wracking experience of meeting with Paul King, the director. Thankfully, he loved the chocolates and would taste each one. I’d create about five different versions of each chocolate.

In total, I made around 2,000 chocolates for the movie. For the Hover-Chocs, which were part of a big scene, I made between 700-900. The delayed Hover-Choc, eaten by the chocolate cartel at the end of the movie, was the most timeconsuming, taking three weeks to make just 80 of them.”

Looking ahead, what are some of your aspirations or goals?

“I’ve got quite a few things lined up! I’ve been getting lots of requests for classes, so I’ll be hosting some masterclasses soon. There are some other exciting projects in the works, but I can’t spill the beans just yet.

My work is seasonal, so in between busy periods, I like to keep time free for creative projects. I’m really passionate about what I do and I’ve found a great balance in my life right now, so I’m just looking forward to more of the same!”

one of wales' greats Dylan Thomas
18 | Cardiff Life the arts

dylan Thomas is regarded as one of the greatest Welsh poets of all time. His imaginative use of language and sense of possibility help create vivid and beautiful imagery when reading his poems. Although not born in Cardiff, Thomas’ influence has dominated the capital’s arts scene for decades through annual celebratory events and local art commissions.

Dylan Thomas Day is celebrated each year on the 14th of May, commemorating the anniversary that Thomas’ play ‘Under Milk Wood’ was first read on stage. Cardiff has held poetry readings, stage shows and smaller social media events to reach a larger audience of Dylan Thomas lovers all over the globe. This day is a chance to celebrate Welsh history and hopefully learn something new about one of Wales’ most cherished artists.

However, there is a simpler way you can celebrate Dylan Thomas’ poetry this year: just read some. His better-known works include “Do not go gentle into that good night”, and “And death shall have no dominion”. An ideal location to appreciate Thomas’ work is Cardiff Bay where you can stumble upon the Beastie Benches found in Britannia Park. These benches are a series of nine carved brick and terracotta benches, created by Welsh sculptor Gwen Heeney. Heeney was inspired by the mythical creatures found in one of Thomas’ writings, “The Ballad of the Long-Legged Bait”. She allowed his words to guide her imagination and provide a visual representation of Dylan Thomas’ words for the public to enjoy since 1994.

Dylan Thomas is notoriously known for his lyrical use of words, adding a musicality to his poems which can be heard when read aloud. This is a unique technique of Thomas’ and to this day it is common to hear his influence in the music industry. For instance, Dylan Thomas’ use of lyrical style can be found in the words written by Bob Dylan. So, if you’re not an avid reader but still want to celebrate the Welsh poet, listen to music which reflects his original and organic sound.

Dylan Thomas’s writing has stayed relevant and present, almost as though it is truly timeless. We can still identify with Thomas’ words despite being written over 60 years ago. He may be

Papa Jupe's T.C. & the Cardiff Music Scene

In 2017, the idea of creating something political, cultinspired and satirical first came to a group of musicians who would later form Papa Jupe’s T.C. The founding members included Sam on guitar, Harry as the frontman and lyricist and Alex on bass.

Since their inception, Papa Jupe’s T.C. has collaborated with a variety of musicians, with 19 different members having played with the band at the last count. However, they have now settled on a solid 7-piece group, with Ash on drums, Tom adding synth playing, Lucian on trumpet and Gemini, a Nashville import, on vocals, expanding their sound beyond the classic 4-piece rock band and giving them what they believe is a unique sound in the Cardiff music scene.

Despite being an unsigned band, Papa Jupe’s T.C. has seen its audience grow from a few friends and family members to sold-out venues. They express gratitude for their small but devoted fan base, who consistently stream their releases, attend their shows and support them by buying and wearing their merch.

Cardiff boasts an amazing and diverse music scene, accommodating a variety of styles and genres. Papa Jupe’s T.C. draws inspiration from bands outside of Wales, aiming to bring a sleazy post-punk sound to Cardiff. They noted that other bands in the Cardiff scene, such as SHLUG, Monet, Nookee, Rainyday Rainbow, Dan’s People and Sweatbox, uplift and support each other.

The band holds fond memories of venues like Castell Coch, where they played their first gig and The Moon, which supported them in their early days. Other venues like Porter’s and Tiny Rebel have also been instrumental in their journey.

Papa Jupe’s T.C. is proud to be part of a city with such a rich musical history and a strong sense of national pride. They have upcoming releases and gigs, including a headline show at Chapter Arts, a renowned institution in Cardiff’s artistic community.

You can follow their musical journey over on Instagram at @papajupestc

Your Place, or Teddy's Place?

Morgan, the owner of Teddy’s Place, introduces us to his studio named after his Grandad Teddy. With over a decade of experience in the film, photography and creative fields, Morgan identified a gap in the market and the need for a dedicated space for creativity. His vision was to establish a hub where makers and creators in Cardiff could bring their ideas to life.

“It’s still a work in progress, these things always are, but I’m beyond proud of it and it’s been amazing to see what people have made in the space already and to see how many amazing creatives come together at our events”, says Morgan. With the support of his Dad and close fellow photographers, Morgan took the plunge and Teddy’s Place came to life last April. The studio is based just off Newport Road, close to the city centre.

Since its opening, Teddy’s Place has been fostering a community of talented creatives in Cardiff, ranging from fashion photographers and filmmakers to artists, brands and musicians. Morgan emphasises that the studio offers more than just photo and film services. “We also host unique creative events, featuring speakers from diverse backgrounds and creative meet-ups where people can come together for a relaxed night of collaboration, accompanied by the finest local independent food and drink offerings Cardiff has to offer.”

The studio encourages visitors to tap into their creativity, branding itself as the ideal space to explore the spark of creativity within each individual.

Repair Cafe Wales

Well, you’re in luck! Repair Café Wales is an incredible non-profit organisation that runs events that enable volunteers to try and fix almost anything that’s brought to them. To create “a society empowered to work together to reduce waste, share skills and strengthen our communities.” It’s a fun, social way to transform the community, bringing people together as they transform their household items into fully working and useful objects once again, as well as championing sustainability and circular economies.

Repair Café Wales, founded by Joe O’Mahoney and Cerys Jones in 2017, is dedicated to combating the problems of wasted materials, loss of skills and attitude to consumerism. Giving
to Your Household Items

Katherine Simmons and her son Kyle had to significantly modify their family home after Kyle suffered a brain haemorrhage at 12, leaving him in a coma and needing multiple surgeries. Following treatment, Kyle defied the odds, though he now requires round-the-clock care at home, with live-in carers also needing space. Their previous home, adapted to meet Kyle’s needs, became inadequate for their growing requirements.

Through the Self Build Wales website, they secured a plot in Pentyrch with planning permission. Working with a local architect, Katherine designed a house tailored to their needs, providing separate living quarters for the family and carers. Completing the construction, they now have a custom-built home meeting all their requirements.

Katherine expressed her gratitude, stating: “This is an absolute dream home for both of us – at our former property, it was difficult to ensure all of Kyle’s care needs were met while also giving us space and privacy…It’s been completely

life-changing for us both, and for Kyle’s carers – we couldn’t be happier with the improvements that are in place. We’re really grateful to Self Build Wales for all the support, advice and funding provided and would absolutely recommend them to anyone thinking of a self-build project.”

Emma Phillips, operations manager for Self Build Wales, commented: “Knowing that we’ve been able to support a family with specific and complex needs is heartening, and we’re glad we were able to help them every step of the way.”

Self Build Wales aims to facilitate self-build and custom-built homes in Wales, removing barriers and uncertainties. Minister for Climate Change, Julie James, encouraged landowners with suitable land to contact the Self Build Wales team to support people in Wales in building their own homes.

Self Build Wales, a £40 million Welsh Government-funded scheme, supports custom and self-build homes, covering plot value and building costs. The scheme recently expanded to allow applicants to use their own land or find available land independently. It is open to anyone wishing to build their own home in Wales.

CARDIFF 'S SCOOP OF DOWN UNDER

Meet Rachel and Katie, two adventurous mums from North Cardiff, who’ve set out on a mission to bring a scoop of New Zealand to Wales with their exciting business venture.

Their story began during their shared days off, spent bonding over their children and exploring their mutual love for discovering unique food experiences. It was during these moments that they stumbled upon the idea of introducing New Zealand ice cream to the South Wales region. Inspired by conversations with family from New Zealand and fueled by their passion for culinary exploration, Rachel and Katie couldn’t resist the allure of turning their dreams into reality.

Their entrepreneurial journey took flight when they stumbled upon a vintage 1980s Bedford van for sale in Chepstow. With bags of determination and enthusiasm, they transformed the van into a charming mobile ice cream haven, complete with a fresh and classic aesthetic that mirrors the style of their delectable products.

Partnering with Joe’s Ice Cream based in Swansea, the pair ensure that their offerings are of the highest quality, proudly showcasing the flavours of Wales. LOOKING FOR SOME GIN-SPIRATION?

Cygnet Gin is a luxurious tipple crafted with the finest botanicals and pure Welsh spring water. Named after the graceful baby swan, symbolising Swansea and infused with personal significance, Cygnet Gin offers a unique drinking experience.

With Katherine Jenkins OBE at the helm, it’s clear that Cygnet Gin is all about quality. From the first sip, you’re hit with the unmistakable flavours of juniper and citrus, balanced perfectly with subtle floral hints. Oh, and let’s not forget that smooth, satisfying finish.

But it’s not just the taste that makes Cygnet Gin stand out; it’s the whole package. The bottle design is nothing short of exquisite. stating that their mission is expanding to raise companies’ sustainability profiles. With ongoing training and initiatives, ASSICA, supported by IVSI, is facilitating this shift towards environmental, economic and social sustainability. Calderone asserts that sustainable development is now the guiding principle for the association and sector companies.

ITALIAN SALUMI SECTOR & THE 2030 AGENDA

THE ASSICA SUSTAINABILITY PROGRAMME comes to cardiff

The Italian Trade Agency, along with the Italian Meat Manufacturers’ Association (ASSICA) and the Italian Deli Meats Promotion Institute (IVSI), will host a Masterclass on the utilisation of Italian cured meats at Coleg Y Cymoedd on June 17th from 11am to 3pm.

The ASSICA “Sustainability Programme” is both a declaration of intent and a pragmatic form of accountability that can be synthesised into 5 main goals, 48 best practices and 35 concrete commitments, thus shedding light on the ‘change of pace’ that the Italian deli meat sector has been adopting and experiencing for some time.

ASSICA, in collaboration with IVSI, aims to help its member companies measure their environmental and social impact, aligning with the Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The program focuses on addressing economic, social, institutional, and environmental challenges concurrently. It emphasises raising awareness and proactive engagement within the sector towards sustainable development. The initiative evaluates ASSICA’s actions for sector companies, notable “Best Practices” implemented by these companies and ASSICA’s concrete commitments to promote sustainability.

Davide Calderone, Director of ASSICA, emphasises the need for promoting sustainable development in the sector,

Giovanni Sacchi, Director of ITA London: “The Italian Trade Agency is delighted to head to Cardiff with ASSICA, Sustainability Project campaign, showcasing the importance that sustainability and tradition play in Italian Cuisine. The United Kingdom is a strategic partner for Italy: in 2023 Italy exported almost 4 billion pounds of agri-food, drinks and tobacco products to the UK, with an increase of 7% compared to the previous year.”

THE ASSICA SUSTAINABILITY PROGRAMME IN A NUTSHELL:

• Environmental awareness: monitoring emissions at all levels and inclusion of scope 1,2, and 3 emissions in the sustainability report.

• Circular economy: cogeneration plants fueled by slaughterhouse waste and 100% renewable energy supply contracts.

• Sustainable supply chain: survey to measure suppliers’ C02 emissions.

• R&D for the environment: use of recyclable PET packaging and integration of paper up to 75% of the total material.

• Union is strength: partnerships with non-profit organisations and companies that are outspoken in the fight against food waste.

• Looking to the future: tailor-made training programmes with stakeholders at the forefront of sustainability.

themselves with our experts on hand to guide you through, this includes the founders of the Festival Robert Maggi, Marco Perini and Luca Montuori.

The Cardiff Wine Festival is about more than just wine, however, with a plethora of food stalls on hand offering the best in Welsh cuisine. From artisan cheeses to fresh seafood, you’ll be able to find the perfect pairing for your favourite wines. We are also proud to partner with the Royal College of Music and Drama, the Welsh Culinary Association and the ICC – Italian Culinary Consortium.

Why wait until June to savour delicious wine? With National Wine Day coming up on Saturday, May 25th, seize the opportunity to enjoy our handpicked recommendations. Grab a glass and treat yourself to a delightful tasting experience, all available from www.winesnvines.co.uk:

Luca: “Frenesia” Falangina Sparkling Brut by Rossovermiglio - £18

An amazing sparkling wine from south Italy, with an elegant and intense nose of white flowers, fresh fruit and pleasant mineral notes. Fresh, clean and well-balanced. Falanghina grapes are usually used to produce still wines, but its natural high acidity and if harvested at the right time, makes it a great variety for sparkling wines.

Robert: Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC by Finocchi - £14.90

Intense floral notes of acacia, almond and a touch of delicate flowers. A savoury, slightly spicy aroma adds complexity and depth, enhancing the overall experience. With its well-balanced profile and vibrant acidity, this wine leaves a lasting impression, culminating in a long, satisfying finish.

Marco: Appassimento Organic, IGP Puglia by Kerinos - £12.90

Rich, complex and intense flavours of ripe dark cherry and plum, with spicy notes of vanilla and toasted oak. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long elegant finish. “Appassimento” is a particular style of wine obtained by drying grapes, either on special racks or on the vine for a late harvest. This process allows the grapes to concentrate the sugar levels and the flavours.

So now you’re armed with all the information and our top recommendations, save the date - the 28th and 29th of June, and get your tickets quickly before we run out! We aim to offer a personal experience, so tickets are limited this year to avoid overcrowding. We look forward to seeing you – Salute!

Cerebral Palsy Cymru

Empowering Families in Wales

Established over 30 years ago by a group of dedicated parents, their mission was to create a centre that would provide specialist therapy for children with cerebral palsy in Wales, eliminating the need for families to travel to London for treatment. In 1992, their vision became a reality with the opening of the original premises, then known as Bobath Cymru.

Today, Cerebral Palsy Cymru continues to offer vital support and therapy to children and families across Wales, focusing on early intervention to maximise outcomes. They believe in the importance of providing specialist therapy as early as possible, as research indicates its significant impact on a child’s future development.

Cerebral Palsy Cymru is a national centre of excellence and the sole specialist cerebral palsy charity in Wales

As the most common physical disability in children worldwide, cerebral palsy affects many families in Wales, with an estimated baby being born with the condition every five days. To sustain their life-changing services, Cerebral Palsy Cymru relies heavily on fundraising efforts, requiring approximately £2 million annually, with 80% of this funding coming from donations and fundraising activities.

There are numerous ways for individuals and organisations to support Cerebral Palsy Cymru’s mission, such as:

• Visit one of their four charity shops around Cardiff (Llanishen, Whitchurch, Cathays and Barry).

• Become one of their Corporate Partners or adopt them as your charity of the year.

• Attend one of their many fundraising events.

• Get your school, business or community group involved and take on a fundraising challenge.

If you think Cerebral Palsy Cymru might be able to support you and/or your child, scan the QR code below to find out more about the services they offer:

Bigmoose, a pioneering mental health charity, is proud to announce the success of its largest event to date, the bigmoose Ultra Fun Run, held on Sunday, April 14th, 2024. The event drew participants from all over the UK, Ireland and the USA and saw an outpouring of support and enthusiasm, resulting in an astonishing fundraising total of £26,865.

“We are overwhelmed by the incredible response to our Fun Run event,” said Jeff Smith, Co-Founder of bigmoose. “The generosity and dedication of our supporters have once again demonstrated the power of community in tackling mental health challenges. With this remarkable achievement, we can provide therapy for at least 67 individuals in need.”

Bigmoose Celebrates

RecordBreaking Fun Run Event

The vibrant sea of spotty tees that filled Bute Park turned heads, brought smiles to locals and served as a beacon of hope and awareness for mental health support. “Our spotty tees have become symbols of our mission,” explained Chloe Smith. “They have sparked conversations, raised awareness, and even led individuals to seek out our services. Every tee represents a lifeline for someone struggling with their mental health.”

Following the event, bigmoose has already received numerous inquiries, indicating a growing interest in their services and mission. “The impact of events like these extends far beyond fundraising,” said Chloe Smith. “They connect people, spark conversations, and inspire action. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who participated and supported us.”

Since its establishment in 2022, bigmoose has received nearly 1,500 therapy referrals, with 49 individuals crediting the organisation with saving their lives. However, sustaining these life-saving services requires ongoing support beyond donations and fundraising. Bigmoose is actively seeking partnerships with business owners who share their philanthropic vision and are interested in supporting mental health initiatives.

“We believe that together, we can make a difference,” said Jeff Smith. “By forging meaningful partnerships with businesses, we can ensure that vital mental health support reaches those who need it most.”

Purpose

Spring has officially sprung and although Welsh weather might throw in the odd downpour, the weather is looking up. As the warm, sunny days become more frequent, there’s nothing better than getting outdoors and enjoying a picnic. Picture this: a beautiful day, all your picnic goodies at the ready and your favourite people around you. With all the beautiful green spots in Cardiff, what else could you want?

This year, we at Cardiff Life are striving to Picnic with Purpose. Champion sustainability, reduce your waste and even participate in a community event like The Big Lunch to take your al fresco ‘lunching’ to the next level.

One of the best parts of a picnic is getting together with friends or family, spending quality time with those you love and taking the time out of your day to enjoy the company of others. Eden Project Communities understand the power of

the picnic and have announced the news of this year’s Big Lunch. Taking place on the 1st and 2nd of June 2024, The Big Lunch is an annual, nationwide get-together where millions take part to enjoy food, friendship and fun, made possible by The National Lottery. Your Big Lunch could be anything from a sprawling street party, a park picnic or a back-garden barbeque - however you do it, you’ll be making a positive difference to your community.

As well as being an incredible opportunity to enjoy yourself, The Big Lunch also strives to unite people, reducing loneliness around neighbourhoods and instilling a sense of community. In 2023, more than 14 million people took part in The Big Lunch and research shows that 65% of those who did feel less lonely as a result, 75% said they feel a stronger sense of community spirit and the same percentage said they are more likely to give time to help neighbours or good causes. This year, The Big Lunch is back and better than ever with a super

focus on sustainability. Pairing with WWF, it’s going to be the greenest Big Lunch yet.

Lindsey Brummitt, Eden Project Programme Director responsible for The Big Lunch said: “Since 2010, we’ve been bringing people together to create happier and healthier communities thanks to National Lottery players, who raise £30 million each week for good causes right across the UK… From great planet-friendly food to share, upcycled decorations to make, street games to play and tips for what you can grow or sow in your street – there are so many ways to join in.”

The Big Lunch has an incredible online bank of resources to help you get involved in The Big Lunch 2024. From advice on how to overcome ‘invite anxiety’ when you’re inviting your neighbours, to resources on helping you secure insurance if you’re planning a larger event, they’ve got you covered. There’s even a great guide on how to weather-proof your plans, just in case the pesky Welsh weather looks like it might hinder your lunch. Additionally, The Big Lunch website is home to some amazing resources and sustainability tips for every day. This includes an incredible list of ‘52 Sustainable Little Swaps’ that can help you to be more eco-conscious, whether this be at your Big Lunch event or just from day to day. Oh, and of course, they have plenty of ideas for games, entertainment and fun!

Talking about food, some of the UK’s favourite chefs, cooks and bakers will be sharing some of their mouthwatering recipes to turn your picnic up a notch. These recipes will be affordable, enjoyable, eco-friendly and most importantly, incredibly tasty! Big Zuu, Joe Wicks, Manon Lagreve, Syabira Yusoff (GBBO) and Suzanne Mulholland (The Batch Lady) are just a few of those who will be whipping up delicious dishes for you to try at home and share with your community.

But, you don’t have to be at a Big Lunch event to carry forward their aim and message. Throughout the spring and summer, picnics are a great way to get together with friends, family and neighbours and build meaningful connections while enjoying the outdoors. Don’t forget the golden rules: leave no mess, show some love to nature and try to keep it green!

Need some inspiration on where to settle? Beautiful Bute Park, Roath Park or Llandaff Fields are classics for Cardiff picnics. Or, you could venture down to Cardiff Bay to have your picnic on the waterfront. There’s an endless selection of where to have

a perfect picnic in Cardiff, so make the most of the natural beauty and green spaces in the city. If you’re going ‘Coronation street party style’, whip out the deck chairs and bunting, and let your street come alive. To find out more about The Big Lunch 2024 and how to get involved, visit their website: https://www. edenprojectcommunities.com/the-big-lunch

Let’s face it, the real highlight of any picnic is the food. But, with all the stuff we bring along with us, there’s a risk of using too many single-use plastics and creating unnecessary waste. Thanks to the Caru Cymru campaign, we’ve got some handy tips to ensure your picnic stays waste-free and Cardiff’s beauty stays intact.

Start by considering simple swaps. Instead of buying flimsy paper plates and disposable utensils that never taste that great anyway, go for reusable options. Not only is this more ecofriendly, but it’s also lighter on your wallet in the long haul. Reusable water bottles, coffee cups, utensils, containers and plates all play a part in cutting down unnecessary waste. If you do need to throw things away afterwards, make sure to bring a bag along to collect your rubbish and dispose of it properly. Don’t forget: leave no trace: clean up all waste, minimise your impact on the environment and leave your favourite picnic spot just as beautiful as you found it.

Making your food at home in advance is a great way of eliminating a lot of single-use plastic waste. Beeswax and soy

wraps are all the rage right now for storing food, but cleanedout jam jars for dips and snacks or even a container from a takeaway will do the job just as well! Also, with reusable packaging and Tupperware, taking any leftovers home will be much easier and will reduce your food waste.

But, if you don’t fancy making everything from scratch, another option is to purchase food from the brilliant independent shops and businesses in Cardiff. For example, the popular Italian restaurant Giardini de Sorrento offers picnic hampers. Choose between the classic Italian picnic box or a vegetarian or vegan option. You might even just fall victim to some of their delicious mini cannoli - mini crisp Italian pastry tubes filled with sweet creamy Ricotta cheese in lots of tasty flavours. To make your picnic extra special, you can even opt to add a bottle of wine or delicious Italian prosecco. Pre-order your hamper here: https:// giardinidisorrento.square.site/picnic-hampers

Still in need of some tips on how to keep your picnics as ecofriendly as possible? Have a look at the Caru Cymru campaign to find out more about how we can Keep Wales Tidy and maximise the sustainability of your picnics with purpose: https://keepwalestidy.cymru/caru-cymru/

So, now that you’re armed with the best picnic tips and tricks, as well as hopefully being inspired to partake in The Big Lunch, the only thing now is to shake out the picnic blanket, fill up the hamper and get out there. Happy picnicking!

NATIONAL WALKING EXPLORING CARDIFF BY FOOT

Iam lucky enough to have been brought up in Carmarthenshire with the countryside right on my doorstep. I have spent a lifetime hiking through the rolling hills of Wales and sometimes I feel more at home outdoors than I do under my own roof.

I moved to Cardiff when I was 19 and now well into my 40s I’ve spent more time living here than anywhere else. Every chance I get, I still head to the mountains but last month, I decided to explore the city I now call home. In light of May’s National Walking Month, join me as I share some fresh walking routes and reveal a few intriguing facts about Cardiff that may surprise you. Who knows, you might even just be inspired to take a look for yourself!

Bute Park

Following the Taff Trail, I began in Bute Park and headed over to Blackfriars Friary. Did you know there was once a medieval Friary here? It was established in 1256 but dissolved in 1538

MONTH

and by the late 1880s when the first excavations took place, it was completely gone. Around 10 years ago, a claim was made that Joseph of Arimathea, the man who took Jesus down from the cross and buried him, is laid to rest in one of the unmarked graves in the Friary.

Stopping in the Secret Garden for a coffee, you can’t help but notice The People’s Door which celebrates Bute Park’s rich history - each panel has a story to tell. They depict things such as Roman coins, which date from the period AD 87 were found in the park showing that it was occupied long before the Friary, the hermit who lived near Cardiff Bridge in the late 1400s and the ducking stool which was erected on the orders of the keeper of the County Gaol, Thomas Williams.

Glamorganshire Canal

One of the last remnants of the Glamorganshire Canal is just outside Bute Park. Barges once passed through this subway and the old bridge was incorporated into the new design.

columnist

I don’t know how many times I have walked through this subway and not looked up at the architecture, there are even old remnants of the canal in this subway with the winding mechanism and tow rope protector at the entrance. The waterways have mostly been covered up but you can still see parts of it in Coryton and the top half of Churchill Way.

City Centre

There is a peephole in the scaffolding at the back of the old Howells department store where the Bethany Particular Baptist Chapel is, which was once swallowed up within the store back in 1969 but is now out in the open once more.

You’ve probably walked through St John’s Gardens countless times, but did you know its nickname is ‘Dead Man’s Alley’? St John’s is an ancient medieval church and the oldest in the city, the numbers underneath your feet refer to burial vaults. The path was built right through the church graveyard so people could access the market easily.

Did you know there once stood a wall around Cardiff dating back to 11c? It has mostly been demolished but there is the last section of the wall hidden just behind the Northgate building opposite the Castle.

Trig Points

Trig points are concrete pillars, around 4 feet high and were built from 1936 onwards by surveyors at the Ordnance Survey to begin the retriangulation of Great Britain - to determine the exact shape of the country. They are generally placed at the highest points, but not always… There are three main trig points with incredible views of Cardiff - Craig Llysfaen, The Garth and Rumney Trig which stands at only 9 metres above sea level – the lowest trig point I’ve ever seen! To give you some perspective, the Garth is 307 metres.

If you’ve ever seen the film starring Hugh Grant “The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill and Came Down a Mountain”, it is supposedly based on Garth Mountain. It was written and directed by Christopher Monger who is from Taffs Well. In the film, the hill in question is in the fictional town of Ffynnon Garw where it comes up just short of mountain status so the locals build a mound on the top to give it the extra height. When you get to the top, you will see where the inspiration comes from as there are 4 ancient burial mounds which date from the Early-Middle Bronze Age about 2,000 BC.

Another fun fact, Taffs Well is the only place in Wales with a thermal spring. The water is approximately 21.6°C and has been visited by people for thousands of years for its healing properties. It’s apparently been reopened so I’m looking forward to finally seeing it!

GIRLS WHO WALK CARDIFF

If you’re feeling inspired to get outdoors but not quite sure where to begin or who to go with, you may have found your answer. Girls Who Walk Cardiff was established and is organised by four young women living and working in the city. United by their shared passion for fostering a community for like-minded girls, they aim to create a safe space where local girls and young women can forge strong friendships.

Meetings for Girls Who Walk Cardiff occur every two weeks on either a Saturday or Sunday, alternating between Cardiff city centre and Cardiff Bay routes. The group welcomes anyone, particularly those new to the area, including students seeking weekend walks and new friendships. Membership spans a range of ages, typically falling between 20 and 40 years old.

As the group continues to evolve, the organisers are enthusiastic about its growth in 2024. In addition to the regular walks, they plan to incorporate more social meetups, such as picnics in the park once the weather warms. New walking routes are also in the works.

Many who have joined their walks enjoy bringing their dogs - a great way of sparking conversation with other group members and perhaps finding a furry friend for their furry friend! In celebration of National Walking Month in May, the group invites new members to join their walks on the 12th and 26th to support the initiative and spend time outdoors.

Brodies Coffee's Journey to Combat Homelessness I

n Gorsedd Gardens, Brodies Coffee, a small community hub, has been making a big impact on the lives of the homeless for the past 8 years. Initially starting with simple acts of kindness like offering drinks to those in need, they soon realised the growing numbers required a more sustainable approach. About 5 years ago, they introduced a “Pay it Forward” board where people could donate fully stamped loyalty cards or pay a nominal sum for a hot drink for the less fortunate.

Even when the board is empty, the community hub ensures that no one goes without a warm cup of tea. This initiative has been more than just a gesture of goodwill; it has been transformative for many members of the homeless community. It serves as a reminder that people care and over the years, they’ve witnessed individuals rebuild their

lives and return to add more numbers to the board, paying it forward.

Last year alone, they facilitated over 3,000 hot drinks and they aspire to see this number grow further. Ultimately, their goal is to eliminate homelessness but until then, they continue to accept donations in person at either of their shops (Gorsedd Gardens or Bricks n Mortar) or through social media payment links. Their commitment to compassion and community shines brightly amidst the challenges of urban homelessness.

SPRING HAS SPRUNG AND THE RENOVATING HAS BEGUN

Every spring, clients get that surge of energy to tackle bathroom projects after enduring the winter wear and tear. Spring offers the perfect conditions for home renovations, with warmer weather and longer days making it easier to have contractors in and out of the house. Plus, escaping to the garden or taking a walk helps when the construction noise starts.

Statistics indicate that around a third of UK homeowners plan some degree of renovation in 2024 and a quick Google search confirms that spring is the prime time for such projects. Experienced renovators would likely agree!

At The Tap End, we specialise in mid-to-high-end bathroom design and supply. Our projects typically start around £10,000.00 to £12,000.00, including fitting, with an average spend closer to £15,000.00 or more. The budget varies based on the specifications and quality desired, with luxurious extras like underfloor heating, ambient lighting, bathroom TVs, Bluetooth mirrors and high-tech Japanese WCs, that wash and dry you after you do your business, adding to the cost.

In terms of fitting, a cloakroom renovation, including plastering, decorating and electrics, can take anywhere from 5 to 10 working days, depending on the scope. Small ensuites or bathrooms may require 10 to 15 working days, while larger ones could take 15 working days or more.

To start your bathroom journey, contact The Tap End today: https://www.thetapend.design/

You can find more of our work on our social media pages, just search The Tap End Bathrooms.

Rhys Thomas

Rhys Thomas is a former international rugby player, inspirational speaker, mental health ambassador, mentor and charity co-founder who has channelled the struggles he has overcome to enhance the lives of others.

Born in South Africa and enjoying a successful international rugby career, Rhys had a “work hard play harder” attitude before he fell victim to a life-changing heart attack during training in 2012. After suffering irreparable damage, Rhys underwent surgery to install an LVAD pump, having to rely on a mechanical heart to survive. Struggling with his new reality, his mental health deteriorated and the trauma he suffered led to an alcohol addiction. Heavy drinking resulted in facing near-death experiences weekly until Rhys hit rock bottom in 2019 and entered rehab.

Finally, Rhys was getting the help he needed and his life changed forever. This experience became his turning point, leading to inner peace, presence and a renewed purpose: to support others through their struggles. Rhys began to share his story, breaking stigmas and speaking about the raw, honest truth about mental health struggles.

Now, Rhys continues to demonstrate his incredible character by talking about mental health, addiction, athlete transition, resilience and self-discovery in schools, businesses and local authorities as an ambassador for the charity Tidy Butt. Tidy Butt, which has provided expert advice and support since its creation in 2020, offers well-being talks, mental health advice and community events as they strive to offer vital help to those who need it most. They have also created the ‘Tidy Butt Library’, an online bank of resources, articles, techniques and videos that provide the spark to help improve mental health.

Rhys is a shining example of perseverance, determination and overcoming unimaginable lows. Overcoming fear and forging a new mindset and life outlook changed his life and this new perspective has allowed him to improve the lives of others in a plethora of ways.

Georgia Collins a

s a young female founder and CEO, Georgia ‘Geo’ Collins is dancing up a storm; empowering women, cultivating a community of dancers and giving back to her community in incredible ways.

Since she was a child, Georgia has been immersed in the world of dance and after receiving a First Class honours at Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, she followed in her mother’s footsteps to become a dance teacher. But, it was in 2018 that she discovered her love for teaching in heels, leading to the creation of Heels Empowerment.

“Being a woman, I know how easy it is to be judged by society for dancing in a sexual way.” Says Georgia. “So, my goal was to create a safe environment for women to express their sensuality.” Since founding Heels Empowerment, Georgia has grown the team into seven members of staff who are all on a mission to empower people through dance. Her impact and message have been spread far and wide and classes now take place multiple times a week in Cardiff and Bristol. An amazing community of people who keep fit, have

fun and are empowered to feel confident and comfortable in their skin has been formed thanks to Georgia and her team of instructors.

But, that’s not all. Alongside growing Heels Empowerment to an incredible community of more than 700 women, Georgia has recently launched a new business, Empowerment Entertainment, as well as running large charity and community events.

In the past 18 months, Georgia has helped to orchestrate two charity balls for Welsh Women’s Aid. Both events raised a huge total of £14k and made sure to champion female-led businesses in Cardiff. Heels Empowerment also raised £4k for Breast Cancer Now at an incredibly popular dancing event. This summer, they’ve set their sights on organising an ‘Empowerment Festival’, focused on self-love, confidence building and empowering women.

THE METAVERSE EDUCATION BEYOND BOUNDARIES

In partnership with Cardiff Vale College and sponsored by the Welsh Government, the world’s first Anti-Racism Further Education has featured for the first time as an interactive piece in the curriculum. The immersive experience created by mXreality and the Metaverse Hub makes Wales the first country committed to the goal of achieving an anti-racist society and educational system by 2030.

The Metaverse experience will allow students to be educated on topics associated with Black and Minority Ethnic Minorities in a 3D interactive learning environment. The virtual space allows the student to travel in time to interact with historical figures and events to gain a deeper understanding of racism. There are also videos of lived

experiences of people in Cardiff, education on black hair and beauty and historical facts from around the world allowing the students to get a chance to understand different cultures.

The Metaverse technology is revolutionising the way students learn and engage with the curriculum by making learning effectively more enjoyable. Additionally, the Metaverse is an important feature for students from underrepresented backgrounds and part of the BAME community to feel represented and taught history that may be about them. In doing so, this will bridge the attainment gap and foster more inclusive conversations within education. There will be a range of different and diverse subjects available in the curriculum and most importantly the approach aims to further educate students on Wales’ diverse history.

The Metaverse Hub provides a new way of virtual learning to encourage students to engage more with the content at hand, work in teams and participate in discussions remotely or in the classroom. There is also a degree of flexibility in which educators can tailor the experiences and assignments making the learning within the metaverse more personalised.

This is a significant transformation in the educational system which extends beyond the traditional classroom resources to challenge racism and create a more equitable future.

BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH PLAY THE HONEYCOMB PROJECT

Last year, Maia Banks closed her toy shop business, Honeycomb, due to the strain of the pandemic. Now, she’s putting her stock to good use by helping the local community, all thanks to The Health Lottery.

Exactly one year after shutting up her shop, Maia, a mother of two from Cardiff, single-handedly works to bring together families to create a safety net for those without a support system. Maia established the Honeycomb Project, which has become a vital support system for families in Grangetown, an economically deprived area.

With funding of £17,808 from The Health Lottery, Maia can now run an extra stay-and-play session each week and implement a proper toy borrowing system. Additionally, she’s invested in art and sensory play supplies and acquired a laptop for administrative tasks. She’s also planning to invest in promotional materials to spread awareness in the community.

Having moved from the USA to Wales in 2012, Maia understands the importance of building meaningful relationships, especially in the absence of close family. She’s witnessed how local support groups can make a

significant impact on parents’ lives, providing not just practical assistance but also emotional support and lasting friendships.

Maia, who has experience in daycare centres and early years, saw the need to support families in her community, especially in an area where finances are tight and English may not be the first language for many. She believes in creating a sustainable and inclusive environment where toys are shared among children, reducing waste and fostering social connections among parents and caregivers.

Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Maia expresses her gratitude to The Health Lottery for making the Honeycomb Project possible. The funding has not only supported numerous individuals but has provided Maia with financial stability, allowing her to focus on running the project effectively without worrying about overhead costs and insurance.

THE PLANET CARD ACCESS TO HEALTHY & SUSTAINABLE FOOD

Anew pilot programme has launched in Cardiff which aims to make healthy, planet-friendly food accessible and affordable for everyone - especially those facing low incomes and health inequalities.

Food that is good for both health and the planet often comes at a higher cost than less healthy and/ or planet-friendly alternatives.

Bridging the Gap is an initiative established to tackle this. Through this initiative, pilots have been launched across the UK to explore ways to make sustainable healthy food –especially sustainably-produced organic fruits and vegetables – more accessible to lower-income people.

The Cardiff pilot programme is ‘The Planet Card’ - a collaboration between Cardiff Farmers Markets, Food Cardiff and a group of organic growers, social enterprises and community organisations. ‘The Planet Card’ will be a card

with a value of up to £11 per week - enabling holders to switch their normal weekly shop for fruit and vegetables to organically produced versions, without being left out of pocket. Shoppers will be able to use the card at a choice of organic fruit and vegetable stalls at any of the Cardiff Farmers Markets across the city (found weekly in Rhiwbina, Roath and Riverside).

Cardiff Farmers Market is leading the pilot with an initial group of 20 shoppers. Once that trial has been evaluated, a second phase with 120 shoppers will run later this summer.

Final plans for the development of the card were co-produced at a community workshop in Canton in March, which brought together representatives from across the city who would be interested in trialling the scheme. The evidence from both phases will be used to support proposals for changes to food policy at a local and national level.

People interested in taking part in the second phase of the project this summer are encouraged to contact Carol Adams at carol@ cardifffarmersmarkets.org.uk
