Love & Trust

The Neighbourhood Spot Where Everyone Knows Your Name

When Nathaniel Williams and Abi Price opened the doors to State of Love & Trust in December 2023, they set out to create more than just an off-licence and bar. Located in the Amber Vista complex, the venue has become a beloved neighbourhood hub offering wine, beers, spirits, and coffee, wrapped in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

“The idea of having a place of our own has been in the back of our minds for some time,” says Abi. “We were working at a company together where there were so many limitations with what we wanted to do, so when the opportunity of the Amber Vista site came up, it was the green light we needed to put our longheld plan into action.”

Fast forward a year, and State of Love & Trust has become a cornerstone of the community. Reflecting on their first year, Nathaniel shares: “It’s been tough in many ways but so rewarding. When everyone came out to celebrate our birthday with us, even despite Storm Darragh, it was heartening to realise we’ve got a real community around us.”

“We set out to create a neighbourhood spot with no hard sell – just open the doors and be there consistently for whatever people may

need,” Abi explains. That ethos has drawn a loyal crowd from all corners of Cardiff and even further afield, including Newport, Bristol, and as far as Australia!

At State of Love & Trust, variety is the spice of life. Nathaniel highlights their dynamic offerings: “There’s always something new. We have weekly beer deliveries, rotating beer taps, and wines by the glass that change every few

days. There’s so much great wine and beer out there to be discovered, and it’s lovely when people come through the doors and their eyes light up with all of the options on offer.”

“State works on a lot of levels,” says Abi. “It’s a local off-licence to stop for a bottle for dinner on the way home, a meeting place for friends, a quiet spot for a solo coffee with a book, or a venue for celebrating—all in the same day.” With a laid-back approach to hospitality, the team hopes first-time visitors will feel right at home. “We set out to create somewhere we’d like to hang out and hope everyone who comes through the doors feels the same way,” Nathaniel adds.

Looking ahead to the future, Nathaniel teases: “We’re here for the long haul, so we have plans!” While they can’t expand physically due to the shop’s size, there’s no shortage of ambition. “More events, more wine tastings, more visiting speakers and producers from wineries and breweries around the world,” Abi lists excitedly.

State of Love & Trust has already forged partnerships with local indie businesses like The Penylan Pantry, Alex Gooch, and Ty Melin bakeries, and they’re just getting started. “We’ll bring even more street food vendors to State, from smash burgers to Canadianstyle poutine and South Indian street food. Whatever we do next, we’re excited to see what 2025 has in store for us!”

Expert quote

“With only 2% of single-use plastic being made from recycled material and 8 million tonnes of plastic leaking into the world’s oceans every year, it’s more important than ever to try to reduce our usage of singleuse plastic. By using a refill shop, even just refilling one item can make a big difference. We have a saying in the zero waste shop community: ‘We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly, we need millions of people doing it imperfectly’

“Small changes can make a difference! So why not make 2025 the year you start reducing your single-use plastic?”

Dmitri, who has played for the Ospreys, Blues, and now the Dragons, drew on his personal experiences to shape the concept.

After gruelling matches and intense training sessions, Dmitri would travel two hours into the valleys for cold water therapy following sauna sessions. Recognising the need for a more convenient solution, he was inspired to create a space where sauna and cold plunge therapy could be seamlessly integrated under one roof. Dmitri and Wayne have turned this vision into a haven for recovery and well-being, offering elite-level techniques to all.

Expert quote

“Self-care, for us, is all about looking after yourself in ways that matter. It’s not just about bubble baths or fancy candles (though they’re great too!) – it’s about tuning in to what you need, whether that’s a walk outside, a good chat with a friend, or even just a quiet moment to yourself.

“At bigmoose, we see every day how important it is to make self-care a priority, especially when life gets tough. it’s a way of saying, ‘I matter,’ and when you take care of yourself, you’re better able to take care of others too. it’s not selfish – it’s essential. self-care helps you feel stronger, more balanced, and ready to take on whatever comes your way. it’s about showing up for yourself so you can show up for the world.”

RECOVERY WELLNESS CLUB

THE ULTIMATE DESTINATION FOR WELLNESS AND RECOVERY

Cardiff is now home to its first premium contrast therapy health spa: the Recovery Wellness Club. With a focus on alternating between the heat of a traditional sauna and the invigorating chill of cold-water immersion, this state-of-the-art facility brings a cutting-edge approach to recovery and relaxation.

The brainchild of professional rugby player Dmitri Arhip and his trusted partner Wayne Barnes, the Recovery Wellness Club was inspired by Dmitri’s journey as an athlete. Known for his stellar career with the Ospreys, Blues, and now the Dragons, Dmitri often turned to contrast therapy after punishing games and gruelling training sessions. For years, he would travel two hours into the valleys to pair cold-water therapy with sauna sessions, a routine that significantly aided his recovery. Recognising a gap in accessible recovery solutions, Dmitri and Wayne

set out to create a space where athletes and non-athletes alike could enjoy the powerful benefits of contrast therapy in one convenient, luxurious setting.

Contrast therapy has long been celebrated for its health benefits, and modern research continues to validate its effectiveness. Saunas, for instance, work wonders by increasing heart rate and dilating blood vessels, boosting circulation throughout the body. Enhanced circulation not only helps ease muscle soreness but also alleviates joint pain, improves mobility, and even reduces symptoms of arthritis. As a bonus, saunas are a natural stress-relief tool, promoting relaxation while helping the body detoxify.

On the flip side is cold-water immersion, also referred to as cold plunging or ice bathing. Immersing the body in cold water can decrease inflammation, flush out metabolic waste, and relieve muscle fatigue after intense physical exertion. This practice accelerates recovery by inducing vasoconstriction (the narrowing of blood vessels) during the cold immersion, followed by vasodilation (blood vessel expansion) as the body warms up. This alternating process floods the body with fresh, oxygenated blood, kickstarting a powerful recovery response.

Combining heat and cold amplifies these benefits. The rapid temperature changes improve blood vessel elasticity and circulation, enhance immune function, and even stimulate the lymphatic system, which helps flush toxins and reduce fatigue. Together, sauna sessions and ice baths create a recovery experience that nurtures both physical and mental well-being.

At Recovery Wellness Club, this synergy is at the heart of everything. Dmitri and Wayne have created more than just a spa; they’ve built a sanctuary for balance and restoration. The facility features five ice baths, with temperatures ranging from a cool 8ºC to an invigorating 2ºC, as well as a bespoke, custom-built sauna that can accommodate up to fifteen people. Every detail has been carefully curated to foster an atmosphere of tranquillity and luxury, providing guests with a space to fully unwind.

The club’s mission is clear: to help visitors relax, refresh, and rejuvenate. Whether you’re a professional athlete seeking faster recovery or simply someone looking to escape the stresses of everyday life, Recovery Wellness Club offers an unparalleled wellness experience. With its state-of-the-art facilities and expertly crafted ambience, this Cardiff spa is revolutionising the way we think about recovery.

By blending the time-tested traditions of sauna therapy with the invigorating benefits of coldwater immersion, Recovery Wellness Club is empowering individuals to reduce stress, boost energy, and build resilience – all while creating balance for both mind and body. For Cardiff’s athletes and wellness enthusiasts, there’s no better place to refresh, relax and rejuvenate.

As a coach, what values do you have for your team?

“I hold strong values as a coach that I aspire to instill within the team and our operations both on and off the court For me, it's essential to work hard while enjoying the process, as well as maintaining a competitive spirit and striving for victory ”

What excites you most about the 2025 Super League with the LexisNexis Cardiff Dragons?

“The NSL presents a fresh learning opportunity with new competition, team dynamics, and management Its transition to professionalism and future vision for development is exciting, recognising that progress takes time. Innovations are being introduced to improve entertainment and competitiveness in the game.”

What is your goal with the Cardiff Dragons for the 2025 Super League season?

“I am here to win. I want us to be the LexisNexis Cardiff Dragons best team. Making play offs is always my goal ”

What have you enjoyed most about returning to Cardiff, and is bringing Welsh culture to the team important?

“Firstly, has to be the people. It is what has drawn me back after my stint last year. Netball is a game but the people you work in and around are what makes it more of an experience Learning Welsh vocabulary and embracing the culture aligns with my values of gaining more from the experience.”

Few names resonate as strongly in the lively heart of Cardiff’s culinary scene as Giovanni Malacrino. Restaurateur, entrepreneur, life coach, and author, Giovanni has been shaping the city’s dining landscape for decades. Sitting down with Cardiff Life Magazine, the man discusses his journey, philosophy, and enduring love for the Welsh capital.

As founder of Wales’ longest-running independent family-run business, Giovanni’s roots in hospitality stretch back to his childhood. “My parents had a chip shop in Grangetown,” he recalls. “I learned to cook there. Later, I collected glasses in a city centre bar at 15 when the chef didn’t turn up. They threw me into the kitchen, and I cooked meals on a rugby international day without a hitch. From there, the executive chef offered me an apprenticeship. That’s how I got into this business.”

Giovanni’s career soon expanded far beyond Cardiff. He worked on cruise liners and ran a restaurant in New Jersey. But it was Wales that ultimately called him home. “I missed sunny South Wales,” he says. “In 1983, I opened my first Giovanni’s here in Cardiff. I don’t regret a single moment.”

Giovanni, proud father of Luca and Ileana, would go on to introduce the UK’s first purpose-built Café Quarter, which helped to raise millions for Welsh charities. With his team Genaro Vanessa and Minister Rosa, he feeds the homeless twice weekly at the Welsh Tabernacle. His ventures, including a mini farm for children with autism and Down’s syndrome, reflect his

lifelong passion for giving back. During that time he also created one of Wales’ most famous nightclubs, No. 10, which was once ranked among the top 10 in the country.

Giovanni’s restaurants have become synonymous with authentic Italian cuisine in Cardiff, hosting the likes of Pavarotti, José Carreras, Dame Shirley Bassey, and Sir Tom Jones, while serving over 3 million loyal customers. For him, it’s not just about food; it’s about passion and connection. “In hospitality, you’ve got to eat it, dream it, and love it. You’ve got to love your customers and your staff. It’s all about making people smile. When someone tells me they had a fantastic meal, it’s the best reward you can get.”

That dedication to creating memorable experiences extends to every dish served at his establishments. “I want my chefs to cook with love and passion,” he emphasises. “Every meal has to taste like the first we’ve ever made.”

Known for fueling champions, Giovanni proudly boasts of feeding Cardiff City Football Club, the Cardiff Devils ice hockey team, and countless athletes including Olympian Jamie Baulsh with his signature pasta – pasta he says makes them ‘skate and run faster’.

Giovanni, who some people will recognise from his appearances on Channel 4’s Come Dine with Me and First Dates, is just as passionate about giving back to the city he loves. “At Giovanni’s, we have something for everyone,” he says. “Our Park Place location is all about classic dining – bringing back that old-school glamour. Meanwhile, our Bay restaurant is modern and vibrant, offering cocktails and Italian-style tapas.”

For Giovanni, the personal touch is irreplaceable. “Technology is great, but nothing beats walking into a restaurant and having someone say hello, taking your order,

The

and having a real chat. It’s those connections that make dining special.

Despite his success, he remains humble and deeply connected to the city that shaped him.

“I left a million-dollar restaurant in New Jersey to return to Cardiff, and I’ve never regretted it. This city has given me so much, and I’m proud to be part of its story.”

Looking ahead, Giovanni hopes to inspire and guide the next generation of restaurateurs. “If I were to give advice, it would be to be clear about your vision, stay true to your brand, and enjoy the journey. Most importantly, never quit. If you can help feed someone’s mind, heart, and soul, then do so.”

Things continue to be busy for the WelshItalian, who will soon launch his family sauce label and is set to appear alongside Homes Under the Hammer’s Martin Roberts in Oops, I Bought a Pub. Summing up his philosophy, Giovanni said: “If people are smiling, you’re doing something right.” With nearly four decades of success and an unwavering love for his craft, Giovanni Malacrino is not just a restaurateur but a true Cardiff icon.

Local Legends & Their Cardiff Favourites

When it comes to shouting about Cardiff’s finest, who better to ask than some of the city’s wellknown movers and shakers? From cultural icons to local legends, we’ve rounded up Cardiff’s notable names to share their favourite spots.

Whether it is a go-to café for a flat white that hits just right, a boutique shop that is impossible to leave empty-handed, a business owner who deserves recognition or a restaurant serving up dishes to dream about – these picks are ‘chef’s kiss’.

MEL OWEN – Comedian and presenter

“I want to give a shout-out to my PT. Alexandra Lewis from Lean Up with Lewis. She won best female personal trainer of the year in 2024 – and

MATHEW PRITCHARD – Chef

“The Tidy Kitchen: Best salads, sandwiches, cakes and much more. It is also owned and run by Laura Willett who in my eyes is one of the best chefs in South Wales.”

LLIO ANGHARAD

– Food and travel blogger

“Canna Deli in Pontcanna champions Welsh comfort food, offering everything from warming traditional cawl and golden Welsh rarebit to hampers packed with locally Welsh goodies. Whether you are hiraethu or just craving a taste of home, this independent gem is the place to be.

“Step into its charming, glass-fronted space with rustic-chic interiors – think wood-panelled walls, neo mismatched chairs, and shelves stocked with Welsh jams and chutney. During the day, enjoy Welsh roasted coffee and indulgent brunches. Whether you are there for a cheeseboard, a hamper, or alfresco dining in the sun, Canna Deli is the taste of Wales that we all need.”

SOPHIE EVANS & ELLIS JENKINS

– West End star & Welsh rugby player

“Thomas by Tom Simmons is our fave special occasion restaurant. The flavour sensations and atmosphere are some of the best in Cardiff. I also really like Brother Thai, who makes my favourite veggie dish in Cardiff. Their jackfruit roti is out of this world, and I could eat it every day. A small menu that packs a punch!”

TANWEN CRAY

– Presenter

“It has to be Nighthawks Wine Bar – fun, relaxed and a cosy set up for a glass of wine with friends before heading out, after work or on a chilled Friday night. What’s great is that it’s open 7 days a week, so if you’re having a tough Tuesday, here’s the place to go! Their toasties are delicious and charcuterie board, LUSH! You’ll find me here every month of the year.”

LUKE DAVIES

– Presenter and social media star

“My favourite place to go is Ffwrnes Pizza. Cardiff Market has changed a lot since I moved to Cardiff in 2012 and it’s now, I think, one of the best places to eat. There’s such a mix of different places there. The boys from Ffwrnes come from my home town of Llanelli too so I’m a little bit biased.”

“My brother recently started a company called Inflate 2 Skate, which is an inflatable skate ramp and instructor for kids’ events and parties. I think it’s such a nice way to get kids into sports without the risk while they’re learning, and also a unique party idea. My son is 3 soon and I can’t wait for him to start having birthday parties with the ramp as it’s so unlike all the other parties we’ve been to so far.”

– Social media star

“The Queer Emporium is an obvious one for me because it’s always been that hub for queer people in the city, but also around the Cardiff areas. I owe everything to them – they were my first ever drag gig and have given me gigs since then.

“Another one I have to give a little shout-out to is Fresh the Baguette Bar. I LOVE those sandwiches. I’m adamant that I will wait in that queue until I have one. They’ve also got the best customer service ever. The man and the woman who run it are lovely and have the patience of a saint.”

– Retired rugby player and trainer

“Working with Charlotte Lewis, who’s a coach at Speaking With Confidence, has been more helpful than I could have imagined. One area where I’ve always struggled is public speaking, especially since my reading skills aren’t the strongest. Charlotte helped me develop a rhythm with my voice, which significantly boosted my confidence when reading scripts on camera.

“I also used to feel uncomfortable when people watched me record videos — you could call it stage fright. However, after working with Charlotte for a year, I’ve faced those fears head-on. Now, I’m creating content for big brands and organisations that require me to read scripts, and I’m in a much better place.”

ELINOR BARKER – Cyclist

ANDREW JENKINS – Star of BBC’s The Traitors

“My nomination is QTS Industrial Supplies. Andrew and his team there are fantastic – they were the first to come on board to support me during my big charity trek. Every person who works there is super friendly and helpful and provides great quality for fantastic prices.”

KEIRON SELF – Actor

“Hard Lines Coffee is great for my caffeine hit! And tasty breakfasts!”

JAKE BRITTON (abanoss/TikTok)

– Social media star

“I couldn’t narrow it down to one so it has to be Bardic Clothing, Knights Vintage and Cardiff Skateboard Club. Bardic links their clothing to weird Welsh historical stories, the latest being a collab with Cardiff Artist Phil Morgan, which is linked with the story of a Welsh man who claimed he invented a ray gun that could stop enemy aircraft during the war. Make sure you follow them on social media as they also hide clothes around Cardiff for people to find.

“Knights Vintage in High Street Arcade is a treasure trove of expertly curated, high-end vintage clothing, transforming sustainable fashion into a bold statement. Jacob the owner has incredible taste, which is reflected in the clothes on offer.”

“And situated upstairs above Bacareto, Cardiff Skateboard Club is at the heart of the city’s skateboarding culture. But you don’t have to be a kickflip specialist to shop there. They have a range of local and worldwide streetwear to keep you feeling young and relevant with the kids.”

CAT WILLIAMS (Basically Cat/ TikTok) – Social media star

“My nomination is Nighthawks Wine Bar in Castle Arcade in Cardiff. It’s a cool wine bar and also has really good vibes, outdoor seating, and a huge selection of wines. It also does food like sandwiches, which I haven’t tried, but I have tried their bread with oil, which was amazing.”

COLLEEN RAMSEY – Chef and presenter

“Heaneys Restaurant is such a fab spot tucked away in Pontcanna. The vibe, the service and the food are worth coming back for time and time again! If you haven’t tried it yet this is your sign to do so – and the Sunday lunch is the bomb… Do people still say the bomb?”

IMRAN NATHOO – Chef

“The Paper Plane Cocktail Bar - This is my one to watch. From the team behind Thomas by Tom Simmons. This place is going to be next level. You heard it here first (tell them Imran sent you). Opening date TBC

“Riverside Market - A proper treasure trove for independent food and drink from the likes of Paul’s Organic Veg, meat from the Madgetts to banging coffee served by Strong Hold Coffee, artisan cheeses from Ty Caws to essentially the best Sunday brekkie Desi style from Kimis Catering. If you have never been, you are missing out!”

“Apothecary 64 in Penarth, which is owned by Craig Parker, had real humble beginnings. Those beginnings have been phenomenal because I love the smells that he creates. The fact that it’s a Welsh product, and the fact that all my English friends who come and visit always leave with something, which means they leave with a little bit of panache – which is good to see. His products have been award-winning as well, especially his hand sanitiser. The smell is just delightful.”

“For me, Pasture is hands down the best foodie spot in Cardiff. The steaks are unbelievable – perfectly cooked and full of flavour. It’s not just about the food though — The vibe is unbeatable. I remember the first time I went: the place was buzzing, the team was so friendly, and the open kitchen made it feel like you were part of the action.”

WYBURN & WAYNE – Community champions

“I love Chapter Arts Centre. A one-stop creative shop of wonder! It’s a true community hub. I’ve been going there since I was a child, and it has nurtured me as an artist – it was where I first performed as my alter ego, Sue Timms. It’s also where I come to write, where I socialize with friends, and where I watch cinema and theatre. Now, as a father to three myself, I take my children there as well; plus, most recently, it hosted our BAFTA screening for Lost Boys & Fairies. Not only is it the beating heart of the Canton community, but it’s also always been at the centre of my life and I don’t know where I would be without it.”

“SaraZtro on Wellfield Road is the best place if you don’t want to go into the city centre. It is the warmest welcome and friendliest staff possible. Just across the road is Cardiff Theatre Cafe, the city’s newest and most exciting venue – showing a huge array of different talent and events.

“We also want to give a special shout-out to The Golden Cross and Mary’s. They’re the staple of Cardiff when it comes to safe spaces for the community.”
