Well, hiya!
When Cardiff Life asked me to guest edit this issue, it was an easy yes. Summer in Cardiff is one of my absolute favourite times in the city - golden hour stretched into a season. Pub gardens are full, Bute Park is covered in picnic blankets, and sometimes the only plan is deciding which iced coffee to order (check out our Cool Down Guide on page15 for help with that).
As June rolls in and the sunshine starts to stick around a little longer, it’s the perfect reminder that you don’t need to travel far, or at all, to feel like you’re on holiday. This special edition of Cardiff Life is your invitation to slip into a Staycation State of Mind: to see our city with fresh eyes and fall in love with it all over again.
To me, it smells like soft serve and wildflowers in Bute Park. It tastes like stone-fired pizza by the slice from West, and a crisp glass of something cold in your favourite pub garden. It sounds like live music at Cardiff Castle and the Pride Parade winding its way through the city’s streets. It’s that golden stretch of time when everything feels a little more exciting.
On page 32, we asked you to share your favourite Cardiff summer moments—and I had so much fun not only writing my own, but reading those from some of our favourite Cardiff faces.
This issue is a celebration of staying put and finding joy in the here and now. Think alfresco dinners, slow mornings, dips in cold water, and all the little things that make Cardiff a place worth holidaying in - even if you already live here.
Thanks for letting me show you the city through my lens. I’ve had the best time working on this.
Here’s to a golden season, right here at home.

Get ready, Cardiff, the world’s biggest beauty playground is landing right here this autumn. Sephora, the global cosmetics giant, is opening its very first Welsh store at St David’s Centre, bringing a whole new level of glam to the capital. This is Sephora’s first UK store outside England since their big comeback in 2022, and it’s already creating a buzz. Inside, expect shelves packed with cultfavourite brands like Makeup by Mario, Haus Labs by Lady Gaga, Rare Beauty, plus Sephora’s own must-have collection. Sarah Boyd, Sephora UK’s Managing Director, says they’re thrilled to meet the passion of Welsh beauty fans - and we know Cardiff is ready to glow up. Helen Morgan, St David’s Centre Director, agrees: “Sephora is about to become one of the city’s most talked-about new arrivals.”
With plans to open 20 UK stores by 2027, this is more than just a new shop; it’s a beauty destination in the making.
It’s official: Cardiff is set to light up the football world again, hosting the opening match of UEFA Euro 2028 at the iconic Principality Stadium. While Cardiff has hosted major events before, including the 2017 Champions League Final, this will be the first time Wales plays host to a senior men’s international tournament. The excitement is sky-high. Wales legend Gareth Bale called it “incredible for the country,” while Cardiff Council Leader Huw Thomas said the event will showcase everything that makes our city special; the energy, the spirit, and the unmatched hospitality.
With an estimated £10 million boost to Welsh football and lasting grassroots investment, Euro 2028 isn’t just a game, it’s a game-changer for Cardiff and Wales.
Cardiff’s Newest Hotspots Have Arrived
Cardiff’s culinary scene is buzzing with fresh energy as a wave of new openings brings bold flavours and vibrant atmospheres to the city. Leading the charge is Banana Tree, serving up fiery pan-Asian street food with a tropical twist. Think sizzling noodles, zesty curries, and laid-back vibes perfect for a casual feast. For those seeking a night of entertainment, The Piano Works offers a unique experience where live musicians play audience-requested songs, creating a dynamic, interactive atmosphere paired with creative cocktails. Breathing new life into Despenser Street, On The River is a transformed riverside venue set to open fully by summer 2025, featuring a coffee shop, bar, street food kitchen, boutique accommodation, and a garden terrace overlooking the Taff — with plans for events, entertainment, and a strong local community focus.
Adding to the city’s gastronomic renaissance is Square + Fair, a rebellious new lunch spot set to open this June in the Royal Arcade. Founded by chef Nick Collins, Square + Fair aims to revolutionise Cardiff’s lunch scene with its chef-led menu featuring slabs of freshly baked focaccia stuffed with bold fillings like cola-pulled pork and roasted Welsh beef. Complemented by ethically sourced coffee roasted in Wales, this venue promises to be a haven for food enthusiasts seeking quality and flavour.
Whether you’re in the mood for exotic street food, live musical entertainment, elegant dining, or innovative lunch options, Cardiff’s latest openings offer something to satisfy every palate.
Cardiff’s green future just got smarter. The city has become the first in the world to launch AI-powered paper cup recycling bins. A bold step towards cleaner streets and a greener city. These smart bins, now dotted around the city centre, use artificial intelligence to spot and sort disposable cups on the spot, cutting contamination and boosting recycling rates like never before. Whether you’re enjoying a flat white on Queen Street, a latte near St Mary Street, or a quick brew around The Hayes, you’ll spot these distinctive green bins ready for your used cup.
This June, Cardiff isn’t cooling down. It’s coming in hot. The city’s streets, parks and rooftops are alive with festivals, feasts, creative takeovers and full-throttle energy. Whether you’re a street food fiend, a wellness warrior, or just here for the vibes, Cardiff is ready to fill your calendar with bold flavours, big moments and pure sunshine-joy. Here’s your definitive guide to the events making this summer one for the books.
THE CITY’S FAVOURITE FLAVOURS RETURN 27th-29th June
The Cardiff Food & Drink Festival is back, and it’s not holding back. For three delicious days, the Bay becomes the capital’s open-air kitchen. The Street Food Piazza serves up global flavours that sizzle and satisfy, while the Bandstand sets the mood with a laid-back soundtrack.
At the Producers Fair and Craft*folK market, you’ll find local makers, indie bakers and more chutney than you knew you needed. It’s free, it’s unmissable, and it’s the tastiest weekend in the city. Come hungry. Roald Dahl Pass, Cardiff Bay.
CRAFTY LEGS AT THE MUSEUM: A CREATIVE TAKEOVER 8th June
Art meets market in the Main Hall of the National Museum, as Crafty Legs sets up shop for one day only. This is where you swap soulless gifts for handcrafted greatness—think poured candles, printed tees, original art and Welshmade everything, all packed with personality. Meet the makers, hear their stories, and take home something that wasn’t made in a factory or flown halfway across the world. It’s the coolest kind of culture clash: museum meets market, gallery meets gift shop, and everyone’s invited. National Museum Cardiff
SUMMER SOLSTICE: RELAX & RESTORE 21st June, 1pm
Mark the longest day of the year with a moment of stillness and quiet reflection. Lazy Yoga’s Relax & Restore Summer Solstice Special is your permission slip to slow down, stretch out and reconnect— physically, mentally and emotionally. Set in the atmospheric surrounds of Insole Court, this 90-minute session blends candlelight, calming music and gentle somatic movement to soothe both body and mind. Ideal for beginners and seasoned yogis alike. Led by the ever-grounded Amanda, it’s a nourishing midsummer pause that leaves you feeling anything but lazy. Mats essential. Stress? Entirely optional.
Ready to earn that post-run brunch?
Conquer Cardiff brings a 5k, 10k and Half Marathon challenge to the green heart of Bute Park. Whether you’re smashing a PB or jogging for the vibes, this is where sweat meets celebration. Expect epic views, raceday energy, a shiny new medal for your collection and plenty of high-fives. Everyone’s welcome: solo runners, work mates, weekend warriors, and the afterglow is real. Coopers Field
Less than half an hour from the city, summer’s sweetest escape is ripe for the picking. Vale Pick Your Own turns fruit into a full experience. Think rolling fields, country air, and rows of sun-kissed strawberries waiting to be snapped, snacked on, and taken home by the punnet. Strawberries might be the stars, but depending on the week, you’ll also find raspberries, blackcurrants and gooseberries in the lineup. No fuss, just fruit. Grab a basket, stroll the rows, and harvest your own flavour of summer. Check their socials and website for daily updates and to book your slot before heading out.
TAFWYL: WELSH CULTURE, TURNED ALL THE WAY UP 14th - 15th June
Tafwyl isn’t just a festival, it’s a full-blown celebration of Welsh language, music and creativity, right in the heart of the city. Set in the leafy sprawl of Bute Park, this two-day showcase brings together live music, literature, street food, family fun and indie market vibes, all wrapped in a warm, bilingual welcome. Expect headliner bands, homegrown talent, and a crowd that’s as passionate as it is chilled. Whether you speak Welsh or just want to soak up the culture, Tafwyl is where Cardiff’s heritage meets its modern heartbeat. Loud, proud and totally free to enter.

From family-friendly festivals to late-night soirees, the Welsh capital is putting Pride front and centre this summer. Whether you’re parading through the park or sipping cocktails, here’s your rainbow-hued guide to the city’s most colourful season
Where better to celebrate than beneath the towers of Cardiff Castle? On June 21st and 22nd, Coopers Field in Bute Park transforms into the beating heart of Pride Cymru, welcoming over 50,000 people for a weekend of visibility, celebration and community. Expect a mile-long parade, live music across multiple stages, cabaret, a community market, a faith tent, and a dedicated family zone – all in one gloriously inclusive space. Feeling peckish? Street food stalls, a Gin Bar, and local treats will keep you fuelled. Accessibility is front of mind too, with provisions in place for disabled and neurodiverse people. Tickets, including VIP options, are available now – this is one weekend you won’t want to miss.
June 6th is your cue to head to Pipes for a night of music, mingling and meaningful support. The Sapphonics take the stage with a sing-along soundtrack, while bingo, a raffle, and street food stalls keep the good vibes flowing.
All proceeds go to Umbrella Cymru, making this a feel-good Friday with purpose.
GIRLS’ NIGHT, DONE
Mark your calendar for August 15th. Velvet Night is Cardiff’s go-to gathering for LGBTQ+ women, and it’s bringing the beats to Peppermint Bar. Arrive early for the 7:30pm solo meet-and-mingle, the perfect icebreaker before a night of dancing, drinks,
BEYOND THE PARADE: MORE WAYS TO CELEBRATE and connection. Think fun, flirty, and fabulously inclusive.
Pride isn’t just a weekend, it’s a movement. From pop-up brunches to community meet-ups, Cardiff’s Pride month programming is bursting with ways to connect. Follow local LGBTQ+ spaces and charities for updates, and keep your Pride spirit shining all summer long.
Ready to join the celebration? Cardiff’s waiting.
Dreaming of long lunches in Barcelona or candlelit dinners in Paris? This summer, swap the boarding pass for a bus ticket - Cardiff’s streets are brimming with continental flavour. From Turkish feasts in the city centre to natural wine bars with Left Bank energy, here’s how to escape the everydayno passport required.
This summer, the Italian dream is just a stroll away. Sip cicheti and spritz at Bacareto , where you’ll feel like you’ve stumbled into a backstreet Venice bar. Cool off with a seasonal ice-cream before heading to Khione Vegato for a Sicilian beer on tap and paninis packed with mortadella. When golden hour hits, take your cue from the Italians and linger - book a table at Terra Mare for silky alla poveraccia pasta and Monte Rosso cocktails at the bar.
Slip into golden hour in Andalusian style at Vermu t - a snug, Barcelona-style bar where the cocktails are crisp and the conservas are cool. Follow it with jamón, croquetas and a sherry flight at Bar 44 , still one of the city’s buzziest tapas spots. Or, for a slice of San Sebastián, head to Curado Bar for pintxos, deli goods and Spanish wines that transport you straight to the Basque Country.
Tacos, tequila and a touch of chaos - La Pantera brings the Mexico City after-dark vibe with its neon-lit bar and banging playlist. Craving something casual? Rascal Burrito is the place for stuffed LA-style burritos or a Latino style brunch option. Or go globe-trotting at Neighbourhood Kitchen , where the street food changes, but the margaritas are always a good idea.
Craving calm? BRØD is your spot — a cosy café perfect for a quiet fika with excellent coffee and sticky cinnamon buns. After something to take home? Welcome Things is a design-lover’s dream: shelves of ceramics, books, and Danish daydreams. It’s like stepping into a lifestyle shoot - just with a hidden treasure trove of Jellycats upstairs.
Cardiff’s street food scene is a passport in itself. Start with Brother Thai , where the sticky beef roti and punchy Thai salads steal the show. At ONJA , Tanzanian flavours take centre stage with spice-laced stews and warming hospitality - a rare gem with roots in East Africa and heart in Cardiff. For a taste of the Caribbean, don’t miss The Real Ting in Cardiff Market. Expect ackee, jerk, and plantain that’s as real as it gets - loud, proud, and full of flavour.
Whether you’re chasing that first brain freeze of summer or just looking for a breezy escape, here’s how to cool down in Cardiff when the temperature climbs. Use this as your guide — and tag us in your favourites over on social!
A round-up of the best ice cream, gelato, sorbet and more:
Secret Garden Café, Bute Park –Their seasonal soft serve is a Cardiff must. No surprise they sell out with flavours like matcha & coconut with cherry blossom sauce.
Bacareto, City Centre –Signature ice cream that’s as dreamy as their spritzes. Try the chocolate cardamom for something a bit different.
Scoop, Barry – Worth the coastal drive for a cone of cherry & prosecco sorbet or their very on-trend white chocolate and pistachio. And if the heat’s really kicking in, grab one of their icy Fruit Coolers — think watermelon iced green tea or strawberry, basil & cucumber.
Elements Café, Cathays –Korean bingsu (shaved ice) that’s almost too pretty to eat. The Hong Kong Milk Tea Bingsu comes with mochi, jelly and lashings of cold condensed milk.
Brød, Pontcanna & PenarthKnown by the Danes as soft ice, this cold, creamy fluffy treat has been brought to Cardiff by the fantastic team at the Danish bakery. Sprinkles are a must.
Love Live Light Healing Hub, Pontcanna – Bonus wellness points for this iced matcha, served with a refreshing strawberry purée base.
Hard Lines, Canton – The cult classic diner. Their iced latte is a must, but go off-menu and ask for the cookie ice cream sandwich for the full effect.
Sparrow, Adamsdown – Their strawberry lemon iced tea is allnatural — no syrup, no cordial, just a pure summer cooler.
Nighthawks, Castle Arcade – Frosé season is back with a vengeance, but don’t miss the Kalimotxo, a Spanish classic made with red wine and Coca-Cola.
Balconi Brews, Cardiff MarketCherry iced mocha, you say? That’s right! The team is going full Black Forest this summer, and we’re here for it.
Refreshments in hand, it’s time to make the most of Cardiff’s waterside spots:
Dawnstalkers, Penarth – An outdoor swimming community that champions cold-water dips in the sea. One for the early risers. Check their site for times and tides.
Roath Park – Shady paths, a boating lake, and ducks included. Hire a pedalo and explore this Victorian manmade lake from the water.
Llanishen Reservoir – For an invigorating adventure this summer, book a cold water swim or try paddleboarding with breathtaking views.
The Taff Trail – It runs for 55 miles between Cardiff and Brecon, but start in Cardiff Bay and you’ll pass Grangetown, Sophia Gardens, Pontcanna Fields, Hailey Park, and Forest Farm on your way to Tongwynlais. Bonus points if you spot a frosty frosé en route.

There’s no better way to savour a sunny Cardiff afternoon than by kicking back in a beer garden with a cold pint in hand. From leafy hideaways to secret courtyards and buzzing pavements, Cardiff is brimming with al fresco watering holes ready to host your summer sipping sessions.
Begin in Llandaff at The Heathcock, a beautifully restored gastropub with a peaceful beer garden and an award-winning seasonal menu. It’s the perfect spot to ease into your crawl with a slow pint and some small plates.
Next, head into Pontcanna to Pipes Beer, tucked away in Kings Road Yard. It’s a hipster’s paradise, part microbrewery and part community hangout, where the hustle of the city feels a world away. With mismatched furniture, string lights, Tom’s Pizza churning out fresh, wood-fired slices, and craft beers flowing from the taps, it’s an escape you won’t want to leave.
Just a short walk away is The Pontcanna Inn on Cathedral Road, a charming traditional pub on the edge of Bute Park. Enjoy a pint in their vibrant garden while soaking in the relaxed atmosphere of this classic Cardiff spot.
From there, head to Brewhouse & Kitchen, where house-brewed ales and a spacious, leafy garden space await. It’s a great place to refuel with hearty pub food, and you can even treat yourself to a flight of their beers to sample a variety of their carefully crafted brews.
Next, pop into Crafty Devil Cellar for takeaway cans, and head back towards Bute Park, Cardiff’s ultimate urban oasis. Find a quiet patch of grass under the trees or by the water, and turn the park into your own private beer garden. No queue, no booking — just sun, friends, and a cold can.
Once you’re ready to carry on, exit the park near the museum and head to The Pen and Wig. Tucked away in the heart of the city, it has a secluded garden that feels like a peaceful escape from the bustle.
Finish your trail at The Grange Pub in Grangetown, a true local gem with a super dog-friendly atmosphere. The beer garden is lively and welcoming, with regular live music adding to the vibrant vibe. It’s the perfect spot to cap off your beer garden adventure.
With so many diverse beer gardens across Cardiff, you’ll never be short of options for a perfect summer pint. Whether you’re seeking lively social spots, peaceful green retreats, or dog-friendly hangouts, this crawl offers a taste of Cardiff’s unique beer culture. So, grab your friends (or your dog!) and enjoy a perfect day of sunshine and pints in the city.

As soon as we pulled up to The Esplanade Hotel, I had that feeling – you know the one where you just know this is going to be a good one. Maybe it was the sea air, maybe it was the way the hotel sat across from Fistral Beach like it owned the whole coastline. Either way, the whole family were buzzing to be in Newquay, which I’d recommend to any ‘Diff resident looking to escape the noise of the city.
We arrived in Newquay during off-season, which, as it turns out, is peak for peace and a bit of self-care. There’s something about darker evenings and wild seas that makes you want to wrap up warm, pour a glass of wine and slow everything down.
The Esplanade is one of those places that just gets families. Our room looked out over Fistral Beach and honestly, waking up to that view felt like a scene out of a Cornish rom-com. Huge waves, early surfers and misty morning light. Bliss.
Inside the hotel, there’s a family pool and splash zone that proved to be a lifesaver on the colder days. Plus, a jacuzzi and sauna for the grown-ups to pretend we were on a spa break. The food at The Esplanade was also amazing – I had the Pan Seared Hake Fillet. The kids, meanwhile, had a whole menu designed just for them, and the service was spot-on.
Wannabe surfers are in luck as The Esplanade is right next to the Quiksilver Surf School. The instructors were brilliant – proper pros who made it feel doable, even for clumsy adults and overexcited kids!
Everything’s walkable or easily accessible in Newquay, and there’s so much to do. We popped into Newquay Zoo, which the kids loved, and found ourselves at
Rosa – a brilliant little bar and restaurant that does American-Italian plates and even mini-golf. Great wine, proper pizza, and plenty of charm.
Our Newquay escape was exactly what we didn’t know we needed. Equal parts adventure and relaxation, with enough entertainment to keep the kids buzzing and enough comfort to keep us sane.
We left with sandy shoes, salt-tangled hair and a whole load of happy memories. And honestly, we’re already
- Sarah Evans, Cardiff.
Make the most of the long, lazy days with these 10 essential summer experiences in the Welsh capitalfrom rooftop hangs to the biggest lineup yet of live acts in the Castle and Bute Park.
Known for its antiques, Jacobs is hiding a summer secret — skip the shopping and head upstairs for a spritz above the rooftops at Cardiff’s best-kept garden escape.
Pack a blanket, stock up at Cardiff Market, and claim a shady spot under the giant trees. Want to level up your spread? Pick up a few pizzas from Ffwrnes.
Paddle, splash and soak up the sun with a SUP session on Cardiff Bay — Cardiff International White Water has something for every kind of water baby this summer.
Seek out suntrap terraces hidden across the city - from Bacareto’s rooftop courtyard, to Pipes Brewery at Kings Road Yard, to the lush outdoor terrace at Thomas by Tom Simmons, dressed in its floral summer best by the brilliant Baldhead Designs.
Nothing says British summer quite like an evening of fast-paced cricket under the floodlights - Pimm’s in hand, of course, and pints beforehand at Brewhouse & Kitchen.
The ultimate Cardiff summer party - big names, big energy, and big crowds at two iconic live music events set against the stunning backdrop of Cardiff Castle and Bute Park.
Hop aboard the Aquabus and see the city from a new angle - this laid-back water taxi glides between the green heart of Bute Park and Cardiff Bay. Finish with sundowners at The Dock.
When the city heats up, head for higher ground - a short, steep climb up the Garth rewards you with sweeping views over Cardiff, the Vale, and the rolling hills beyond. Pack a water bottle and soak it all in.
Take it slow with a lazy, sun-soaked brunch - think alfresco tables at Milkwood, Hiraeth, or early-morning croissants from Ground Bakery.
Nothing hits like a cold pint on a hot day - especially in one of Cardiff’s best pub gardens. Try Pipes in Kings Road Yard for indie vibes and local brews, the sprawling garden at Pontcanna Inn (often with street food pop-ups), or Ty Mawr for panoramic views over the city and surrounding hills.
In the heart of one of Cardiff’s most beloved neighbourhoods, The Pontcanna Inn is redefining what a city pub can be. Known for its relaxed charm and prime location on Cathedral Road, it now offers one of the capital’s most exciting venues: a reimagined beer garden designed for every kind of celebration, gathering, or game day.
The newly upgraded garden is more than a summer spot, it’s a year-round destination. Thanks to its state-of-the-art retractable roof, guests can enjoy alfresco dining and drinking no matter what the Welsh weather throws their way. The addition of anti-glare 65-inch screens makes it a dream venue for sports lovers, delivering an unbeatable atmosphere for live matches.
What truly sets the space apart is its flexibility. The garden features three distinct zones, each designed to cater to different group sizes and moods:
The Whole Garden – Perfect for large-scale events, offering space for up to 270 seated or 500 standing guests. Whether it’s a private party, corporate do, or a live music night, this option allows you to take over the whole garden for an unforgettable event.
The Pavilion – An elevated area with panoramic views and front-row access to the screens. It accommodates up to 100 guests standing, making it a favourite for match days and weekend gatherings.
The Pitch – Decked out with astro turf and picnic benches, this relaxed space captures a summer garden party feel, positioned directly in front of one of the TVs. It suits up to 200 standing or 100 seated guests.
For those planning an event, The Pontcanna Inn’s experienced team provides full support from first enquiry to final toast. The best part? Guests can make a night of it with stylish boutique accommodation just upstairs.
But the garden is just the beginning. Step inside and you’ll discover that the transformation continues throughout the inn...
Following its outdoor revamp, The Pontcanna Inn has undergone an equally impressive transformation indoors, emerging as one of Cardiff’s most inviting boutique pub-hotels. The recent refurbishment has redefined the inn’s interiors with a look that’s fresh, refined and full of character.
Upstairs, the boutique bedrooms have been thoughtfully redesigned to offer calm, contemporary comfort. Each room features soft neutral tones, plush furnishings and thoughtful touches that make overnight stays feel like a real retreat. Whether you’re in town for business, a weekend getaway, or extending the celebrations from the garden below, the rooms offer the perfect home base.
Downstairs, the bar and dining areas have been revitalised with a blend of heritage features and modern elegance. A curated menu of seasonal dishes, premium wines, and classic cocktails ensures the space is as enjoyable for a spontaneous drink as it is for a special dinner.
With its new look and renewed energy, The Pontcanna Inn has become a true all-day destination. A place to catch up over coffee, gather for lunch, celebrate into the evening, and wake up to a boutique experience in the morning.
From locals enjoying a sunny afternoon to visitors discovering one of Cardiff’s most characterful neighbourhoods, The Pontcanna Inn now offers more reasons than ever to drop in, and stay a little longer.

Cardiff is having a wellness moment. According to a 2024 report by Harper James, the city has seen a 44% rise in wellness businesses since 2019, placing it fourth in the UK for industry growth. From cold water therapy to sound baths and breathwork, the capital is embracing calm like never before. At the centre of this quiet revolution is OREN Wellness.
Housed in a light-filled studio on Rhymney River Bridge Road, OREN offers something Cardiff hasn’t quite had until now. This is not just a place to stretch. It is a space designed to help you soften, strengthen and reconnect.
The name “Oren” means orange in Welsh, and that identity runs through every detail. The studio is bathed in warm, terracotta tones that feel earthy, natural and calming. The environment is deliberately minimal and carefully curated to help you switch off the noise and come back to yourself.
The class offering is just as considered. Alongside breath-led vinyasa, restorative flows and strength-based movement, OREN introduces something new to the city: on-demand Reformer Pilates. Each Reformer bed is fitted with a personal touchscreen and wireless headphones, giving you access to more than 600 guided classes.
From deep stretch and strength to pre- and postnatal sessions, you can filter by intensity, duration and focus. It is a more flexible and
affordable way to experience Reformer Pilates, available whenever instructor-led sessions are not running.
OREN also offers infrared heated yoga and Pilates classes, creating a deeply restorative experience that supports circulation, mobility and detoxification. These heated sessions are popular for a reason, helping you go deeper into poses while supporting muscle recovery and relaxation.
Recovery is a key part of the OREN ethos. Their dedicated Recovery Suite features an infrared sauna, ice bath, and LED red light therapy panel, giving members the tools to recharge both body and mind. Whether you’re easing sore muscles or seeking mental clarity, the space is designed to support a fullcircle approach to wellness.
But OREN isn’t only about physical movement. The studio is grounded in the belief that wellness is multi-layered. Nervous system support, emotional regulation, and community connection are all part of the experience. With regular workshops and inclusive programming, OREN is building a space where everyone can feel welcome, supported and seen.
Cardiff’s wellness landscape is growing fast. OREN is not just part of the shift. It is helping to shape what comes next.

With over a decade of experience in the corporate food and drink world, Sara returned home determined to future-proof her family’s legacy. The result? A pioneering business that blends sustainability with style, and proudly champions Welsh craftsmanship. At the heart of Tumptonics is a naturally filtered spring, tapped directly from beneath the farm.
This pristine water feeds a sleek, purpose-built canning facility, crafted using local Wentwood timber, that can scale from 10 to 10,000 cans a day and more.
From independent delis to buzzing festivals, Tumptonics meets every need. Sara Jones, a Cardiff University graduate, emphasises the community-focused vision of Tumptonics: “We aim to secure a sustainable future for the farm while contributing to the growth of Welsh food and drink producers.”
They’re doing just that. Transforming the family farm into a creative hub for local producers, complete with a lab, meeting spaces, and a shared ethos of innovation. At the heart of this vision is Tumptonics’ flagship product line, Soleau: a refreshingly original spring water brand launching soon.
Using naturally filtered Welsh spring water, Soleau is available in still and sparkling varieties, packaged in sleek, recyclable 330ml cans. It captures the farm’s flavour, flair, and forward-thinking energy, offering sustainable hydration designed for modern, health-conscious lifestyles.
Yet, amid all this innovation, the farm’s roots remain firmly planted. Livestock still roam the fields, and the Williams family continues to uphold their heritage of high-quality meat production.
With one foot in the past and the other confidently stepping into the future, Tump Farm is redefining what it means to be a modern rural business in Wales, and it all starts with a can.
Perfect summer mornings in Cardiff start caffeinated, either with a strawberry matcha from Love Live Light Healing Hub or a cup of Hard Lines (my kitchen is always stacked with their beans).
As a self-confessed golf widow, my solo Saturday mornings are sacred: playlist on, then a walk through Llandaff Fields to Kings Road
Yard The Wardrobe serves hot drinks in the most gorgeous china, and on market days, the vibe doesn’t get much better. I always pick up a few “essentials” from the traders - essentials meaning croissants from Astrid’s Petite Cuisine , obviously.
The perfect summer afternoon has to include the absolute sun trap outside Uisce . Good friends,
great small plates, and even greater spicy margs make for the ideal sundowners.
As night hits, there’s only one place I want to be: Mesen in Rhiwbina . It’s our local and the undisputed king of barbecue. The vibes are always divine, Welly’s spicy margs are in my opinion the best in the city, and there’s no better way to end the day than splitting a huge plate of steak with friends.
Fighting over every possible al fresco spot you can find. Living on a diet of Aperol and every street food vendor I can get my hands on. Warm pints outside The City Arms . And knowing that the best nights always start with “just one drink” in the sun.
Ease into the day with a walk through Bute Park . It’s at its best in the early light. Tree-lined paths, wildflowers, and the River Taff cutting through the city. The perfect headspace before the day begins. I’m not usually a breakfast person, but Milkwood’s bun or Hard Lines brecwast bap could lift even the lowest spirits.
Head to Cardiff Market for lunch, straight to Ffwrnes Pizza for a double pepperoni with hot honey (thank us later). Take it to the picnic area near Cardiff Castle and enjoy your slice of sunshine with a side of skyline. Don’t leave without warm Welsh cakes from Bakestones and a quick stop at Clancy’s for teas and spices. After lunch, wander the Victorian
In this feel-good feature, we asked a handful of Cardiff’s biggest fans: What does summer in Cardiff mean to you? And if you could plan your perfect summer day in the city - from morning coffee to golden hour drinks — what would it look like?
The result? A sunshine-soaked collection of sensory memories, go-to spots, and dreamy day-in-the-life itineraries that capture the spirit of the season in the place we call home.

arcades. Dip into indie shops, grab edible souvenirs from Wally’s Deli , and dig through crates at Spillers for something unexpected.
Golden hour means drinks: a proper pint at The City Arms , chilled red at Nighthawks , or vermouth and a platter at Vermut Bar featuring cured fish, meats, and cheeses if you’re feeling fancy. Then it’s on to the greatest place on earth for a gig – Clwb Ifor Bach Have a boogie, listen to something loud and get sweaty. If the night spirals, it’s got to be Live Lounge for late-night revelry, dancing to covers you didn’t know you knew. And of course, the sacred end-ofnight ritual: Dorothy’s on Chippy Alley . Mine’s a cheese, chips, gravy, and a giant deep-fried rissole orb, eaten outside on Caroline Street in a sea of polystyrene. Can’t beat it.
For me, Cardiff just keeps getting better and better. It now rivals most UK cities on so many fronts and is a wonderful place to live and work.
Mornings start early, so coffee is top of the agenda. My two go-to spots are Donald’s and Corner Coffee they are not only superb but just yards from our place, which makes life very easy! You’re guaranteed friendly faces and excellent coffee in both.
I usually grab breakfast at home, but if I’m tight on time, I can’t resist the most insane, live-fire breakfast at Asador 44 . Not many people know we open seven days a week for breakfast, but it’s a real treat. The sherry Bloody Marys are hard to resist too (when I’m not working!).
Afternoons are for a walk through Bute Park along the river, or down Cathedral Road when the sun’s out, always lovely. Passing The City Arms and seeing people enjoying a pint outside is hard to resist. But my favourite ritual is grabbing something to eat from Cardiff Market and wandering into Bute Park with it. It’s the perfect way to unwind and enjoy the ever-expanding variety of food on offer. As a teenager, I spent day after day lounging around in Bute Park with friends (behaving, I promise!), and I still love it.
Early evenings mean drinks and nibbles on the terrace at Bar 44 , the perfect spot to soak up the afterwork buzz or the start of someone’s night out. Once the sun goes down, I can’t resist the fish and seafood we cook over fire at Asador 44.
Outside of that, the terrace at Pasture is another favourite, and further afield, Ember - owned and run by long-time family friends and old team members, Dave and Tommy — is a must. After pub hours, the cocktails at Lab 22 continue to blow me away. It’s rightfully one of the best cocktail bars in the UK.
Cardiff’s green spaces! So close to the urban hustle and bustle — are everything.
There’s a real buzz to being in the middle of it all. From Depot at the Castle to global stadium events and gigs across the city, Cardiff now feels like one of the most vibrant cities in the UK . Add to that the arcades, the Bay barrage walk to Penarth, and the growing scene of quality independent eateries and watering holes. There’s just so much to love.
This summer, Cardiff isn’t just turning up the volume. It’s breaking records. From June through August, more than 30 major gigs will echo through the capital, drawing close to a million music lovers and transforming the city into a festival of sound. Whether you’re into indie anthems, soul classics or stadium-sized pop, there’s a setlist for every kind of listener. All just steps from the city’s buzzing food, drink and shopping scenes. Here’s your guide to the headliners, the hidden gems, and the moments not to miss.
Introducing Blackweir Live: Cardiff’s newest outdoor concert series, and already one of the city’s most exciting summer launches. Set in Blackweir Fields, just a short stroll from Cardiff Castle, the series brings global names like Noah Kahan, Kings of Leon, Alanis Morissette, Slayer and Stevie Wonder to the heart of the capital. Created by DEPOT Live and Cuffe & Taylor, it’s designed not just to entertain, but to energise. Giving a welcome boost to midweek city centre footfall with a crowd-pleasing mix of rock, pop and soul. Expect laid-back summer vibes and latenight magic under open skies.
Mark your calendar: Monday 23rd June. Lana Del Rey, the queen of cinematic heartbreak and hazy Americana, takes over the Principality Stadium for one night only.
Her fans (you’ll know them by the flower crowns and vintage lace) are fiercely loyal, deeply
emotional and ready to turn Cardiff into a dreamy, slowmotion movie scene. Expect a night of poetry, nostalgia and big, swoony choruses.
Get ready for a soul-soaked Saturday. On 28th June, the iconic Billy Ocean brings his smooth vocals and signature Caribbean charm to the Utilita Arena. Whether you grew up with his timeless hits or just discovered him via a summer playlist, this is one to dance to. Feel-good energy guaranteed.
Two nights. One stadium. A whole lot of nostalgia. Stereophonics return to Cardiff for their Stadium Anthems tour on 11th and 12th July. Their first in three years, and one of their biggest ever. Expect a career-spanning set, special guests Blossoms, and a crowd ready to sing every word. For long-time fans and new listeners alike, this is a homecoming gig of epic proportions. Whether it’s your first gig or your fiftieth, this summer is all about turning up, tuning in, and letting the city soundtrack your season. Cardiff’s never sounded so good.
So grab your mates, soak up the atmosphere, and get ready for two unforgettable nights of music, memories, and magic under the lights. From gritty rock anthems to heartfelt ballads, every song promises to hit just right. It’s more than a concert— it’s a celebration of Welsh music royalty returning to where it all began.
Now, I’m afraid I can’t guarantee you the weather – but what I can guarantee is this guide to hosting the ultimate BBQ this summer. Skewers, spritzes, and maybe a little sunshine.
No soggy sausages here. Whether you’re sizzling skewers or flipping halloumi like a pro, your BBQ deserves the best of local. We’ve rounded up Cardiff’s indie heroes – from bakery buns to farmers’ market veg – to help you build your dream BBQ box, all from right here in the city.
GLEN GRIFFITHS , Dinas Powys
- Trading for over 60 years, these butchery pros know their stuff – and word on the street is their gluten-free pork sausages are a must.
FARMER’S PANTRY , Llantwit
Major - Family-run and focused on ethical farming, this is the place to go for top-quality steaks. Their Tomahawk is a guaranteed showstopper this summer.
ORIEL JONES , Pontcanna - A Cardiff fan favourite – and for good reason. Supplying some of the city’s best restaurants, you can bring that restaurantquality experience home. Their tandoori lamb skewers are not to be missed.
MEAT MATTERS – Based in Swansea but delivering across South Wales, these guys are known for premium cuts and BBQ-ready goodness. Their burgers fly fast – so get in quick!
MYLOAF , Llandaff North – Soft baps that can handle the juiciest of burgers – baked daily and a total BBQ essential. Don’t skip the seasonal sweet treats on the counter.
GLEN GRIFFITHS , Dinas Powys - Trading for over 60 years, these butchery pros know their stuff – and word on the street is their gluten-free pork sausages are a must.
PETTIGREW BAKERY , various locations or order online – Their demi brioche buns are made for stacking high – soft, slightly sweet, and perfectly golden. But the real MVP? The pain d’épi – a tear-and-share baguette, ideal for dipping or mopping up sauces.
ALEX GOOCH BAKERY , various locations or order online - A 100% plant-based artisan bakery that brings a bit of bite – their sourdough loaves are perfect sliced, drizzled with olive oil, and grilled. Try their challah buns for an extra-special upgrade.
PUGH’S FOOD HALL – A treasure trove of Welsh produce, stocking over 1,000 local products – but it’s their sauces and preserves that have our full attention. Grab a bottle of Sôs Coch, a chilli jam by Penylan Preserves to amp up your burgers, and Crwst Sea Salted Caramel – perfect over grilled pineapple with vanilla ice cream.
TIDY KITCHEN – Your veggie guests deserve more than just sides. Tidy Kitchen’s salad platters are packed with flavour. Try the Goat & Nut with goat’s cheese, candied walnuts, apple, and marinated kale, or the Kung Pao Tofu with crispy tofu, roasted peppers, and kung pao dressing. We won’t tell anyone you didn’t make it.
TŶ CAWS - Cheese at a BBQ shouldn’t be an afterthought. Head to Tŷ Caws and grab a block of Teifi Halloumi – made with rich organic cow’s milk from a single farm in Llanboidy. Halloumi doesn’t get much better.
NATA & CO - I’ll never forget the BBQ where someone pulled out boxes of fresh Portuguese tarts for afters – now that’s how you do pudding. Grab a box of pastel de nata from Nata & Co to serve with coffee… or a chilled port, if you’re feeling fancy.
- Family-run and 100% plant-based, Patisserie Verte creates stunning patisseriestyle showstoppers to order. Their tropical cheesecake with mango and passionfruit compote is sunshine on a plate – the perfect end to a perfect day.
What to pop on ice – from juicy chilled reds to spritz-friendly whites, we’ve asked Cardiff’s best wine people what they’re pouring this summer.
Sara, Owner of Vin Van at Corporation Market (@vinvancymru) – “BBQ wine? Riesling every time! It loves spice, bold flavours, and seafood feasts. Dry and zesty with lime, citrus, and a bright, clean finish - it’s pure sunshine in a glass, with or without food!”
Daniel Williams, owner of The Bottle Shops (@thebottleshopcardiff):– “For many (myself included), sunshine means one thing wine-wise: rosé season. Already a firm favourite with many Bottle Shop regulars is La Grande Bauquière (£14.99), a refreshing, pale Provençal rosé, perfect for a summer barbecue. Comfortably standing up to the well-known rosés from the region, but getting bonus points for not coming with a hefty price tag, you really can’t go wrong.”
For those who prefer a crisp white, I’d recommend giving the Léon Pouilly Fumé from Domaine Jonathan Pabiot (£29.99) a try. 100% Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire, it is a perfect balance of white fruits and citrus with a chalky salinity – a real summer banger.
Spanish Wines, Penarth Road – The go-to for all things Iberian: albariño for seafood grills, vermouth for pre-dinner sipping, and don’t sleep on the tinned fish and anchovy-stuffed olives while you’re there.
Stylish picks to bring the sunshine in - and take the party out.

This month, Cardiff Bay gets a Mediterranean-style upgrade as Padium throws open its doors. The first venture outside London for the boutique padel brand, it promises eight state-of-the-art indoor courts, luxury spa vibes (yes, that’s a plunge pool and sauna you spotted), and a café-bar you’ll linger in long after the final point. Cricket’s back, and Sophia Gardens is the spot. The Vitality Blast is in full swing this June, with matches made for sundown socials and casual catch-ups. Something exciting is coming to the heart of Cardiff—and it’s one to watch. Set within the beautiful, Grade II-listed Castle Quarter Arcade, HYS is Loft Co’s latest and most ambitious food hall project to date, and it’s already shaping up to be a mustvisit destination for food lovers and city dwellers alike.
Loft Co has made a name for itself by breathing new life into iconic Welsh landmarks, think Goodsheds in Barry, Newport Market, and Swansea’s Albert Hall. Now, they’re turning their attention to one of Cardiff’s best-kept historic corners, blending heritage with bold, contemporary design to create something truly unique.
Once open (scheduled for late 2025), HYS will span two spacious floors, offering seating for 650 and a line-up of 12 independent street food traders, each handpicked for their creative, diverse, and delicious menus. Alongside these culinary stars, HYS will also feature concept restaurants, a chance to enjoy more tailored, elevated dining experiences in a relaxed but stylish setting.
It’s more than just a food hall, though. HYS is being designed as a cultural and social hub, complete with versatile event spaces for everything from private dining and pop-up markets to creative workshops and celebrations. There’s even a dedicated venue for weddings and private events, offering something truly special in the heart of the city.
The project is a collaboration between Loft Co and Castle Quarter owners Mansford, with the support of Holmes Property Partners, Tandem Property Management, and EJ Hales. Together, they’re reimagining the historic arcade as a lively, community-focused space that honours its architectural heritage
while firmly looking to the future. HYS promises to bring new energy and flavour to Cardiff’s city centre and if Loft Co’s previous projects are anything to go by, it’s set to be a standout. Whether you’re there for the food, the atmosphere, or to simply soak up the buzz, this is one spot you’ll want on your radar.

By Dom Horan - The Curly Hair Cook
Summer, for me, is all about time with friends and family in the sun, complemented by great food and a cold beer (or two... or—well, anyway). Carnitas is a fantastic way to bring the Mexican sun to your table— perfect for sharing or saving as leftovers. Served with a fresh, zingy corn salad, I’m in heaven. Authentic carnitas is typically cooked in enormous copper pots full of pork lard, reused each time to build flavour. Since most of us don’t have that luxury (or the capacity for that much lard), this version makes the process extremely easy while still yielding amazing results every time. This recipe is ideal for summer days when you want to take it slow and still end up with a fantastic meal. Once the pork is seasoned, you can simply let it snuggle up in the oven while you work or relax in the garden.
The most difficult part is having the patience to wait for it to be ready. The flavours of coriander, lime, avocado, and chilli are peak summer to me—they bring a freshness and zing that just feels right when the sun is out. It’s also a great meal for sharing when friends or family are around— though it’ll disappear quickly. The esquites (charred corn salad) is one of the most addictive things I make—one of those dishes you can’t help grabbing a spoonful of every time you pass the fridge. It packs punchy flavour with an incredibly moreish texture—so if you’re serving a large group, double the recipe. I can assure you, however much you make, there’ll be none left by the end. And you’ll be sad about it. It also pairs perfectly with the pork, balancing the fattiness and meatiness with sour, salty, sweet, and heat.
» 2kg boneless pork shoulder, rind removed.
» 50ml Vegetable oil
» 8 garlic cloves, peeled
» Salt
» Pepper
Preheat your oven to 110°C. If your pork joint came with rind, carefully remove it with a sharp knife, leaving a layer of fat on top. Season the meat generously all over with salt and pepper. Place into a Dutch oven or large pan, poke garlic into the crevices and folds of the pork and pour the oil over the top. Put the lid on and place it in the oven for 6 hours. Don’t check on it—just trust the process and relax. When it’s done, take it out and place it on a rack to cool slightly.
It’s impossible not to try some at this stage—it should be so tender that a light prod causes pieces to fall apart.
» 2 tbsp vegetable oil.
» 350g frozen sweetcorn
» 1 bunch, spring onions
» ½ bunch, coriander
» 1 jalapeño
» 2 tbsp mayonnaise
» 1 lime
» 1-2 tsp chilli powder
Finely slice the green parts of the spring onions and half a bunch of coriander. Halve and deseed the jalapeño, then finely chop. Crumble the feta into small pieces with your fingers. Preheat a pan over high heat, add the oil and corn. Let it char on one side before stirring. Continue until most of the corn is blackened in spots (but not burnt)—this can take up to 5 minutes. Season to taste and set aside in a large bowl. Once cooled, add the remaining ingredients and mix thoroughly. Add chilli powder gradually to taste—I typically land on 1–2 teaspoons.
What you’ll end up with is an incredibly addictive corn salad: sweetcorn balanced by sharp lime and feta, fresh coriander and onion, and a kick from the jalapeño and chilli powder. I could eat bowls of this (in fact, I have).
When it’s done, take it out and place it on a rack to cool slightly. It’s impossible not to try some at
this stage—it should be so tender that a light prod causes pieces to fall apart.
» Pork
» Rice
» Coriander
» Lime
» Salsa (optional)
» Avocado
» Large flour tortillas
Toast the tortillas in a dry pan until warm with some light colour—but not crisp, or they’ll crack when rolling. Finely chop the coriander and mix into your hot rice with some lime juice. To really boost the flavour, I strongly suggest stirring in a couple of spoonfuls of the rendered pork
fat from the carnitas—it takes it to another level. Shred the pork (it will practically do this by itself) and fry in a preheated pan with a couple of tablespoons of oil. Season generously with salt. I love the taste of the carnitas as-is, but if you’d like it flavoured, feel free to sprinkle in a few teaspoons of ground cumin, ground coriander, and oregano (in equal parts) as it heats in the pan. Crisp it up on both sides and you’re ready to go. Place a column of seasoned rice into the tortilla, followed by the carnitas. Lay some avocado slices alongside, then top with a generous handful of coriander leaves and lots of lime juice. If using salsa, spoon it across the top and roll up your burrito. The varied textures and flavours—from rice and avocado to crispy pork and herby coriander—are a match made in heaven. Serve the esquites salad on the side and you’re in flavour town.

An interview with Zade, the Cardiff-based creative behind Earth & Elm — and granddaughter of local icon Betty Campbell. Earth & Elm is a Cardiffborn brand blending soulful ceramics with thoughtful florals.
What are you most excited about right now?
I’m so grateful to have been asked to have my work displayed and stocked in the Wales Millennium Centre’s new gift shop, opening at the start of June.
It’s a huge compliment - to be seen and appreciated for my work is a tremendous feeling. It feels surreal that you’ll be able to buy my ceramics in such an iconic building, just down the road from my Nan and Granddad’s house.
I’m also working on a project I’m not quite ready to announce yet, but it connects my love of floristry and ceramics. It will be a signature offering, so keep your eyes peeled!
Where can people support you?
My new website launches on June 1st: www.EarthAndElm.co.uk.
You’ll be able to shop my ceramics and explore the different services I offer — from floristry for events to ceramics commissions, stockist enquiries, and wholesale orders for businesses. In the meantime, you can follow me on Instagram
Tell us a little about Earth & Elm — what inspired you to bring it to life?
Earth and Elm encompasses my love of creating, mindfully, through pottery & flora. I started pottery just under two years ago, wanting a creative escape from my career as an actor which was, like for most, a rollercoaster of ups and downs. Pottery was always on my bucket list to try, so I threw myself in and instantly fell in love with the process and how therapeutic it was. I seemed to gravitate towards making vases due to my love of flowers, and decided to learn how to do them justice and dabble in Floristry. Little did I know I’d become obsessed with this too, and then had a vision to combine these skills; offering my bespoke handmade vases with handcrafted floral centrepieces for events or as special gifts. That’s how Earth &
Elm was born; encompassing all from the Earth, the clay, to the flora & fauna that the vessels hold.
You’ve got such a strong connection to the local community — how has that shaped the business?
Growing up in creative circles and around my Nana Betty — someone deeply connected to our local community — it’s no surprise that I value my own connection to it so strongly. I’ve always been aware of how art brings people together, something I’ve seen firsthand through my work with the local charity Hijinx Theatre, where I support actors with learning disabilities and/or autism through accessible, professional training. Art has the power to connect and to heal through self-expression, and it’s that belief which shapes the future I’m building with Earth & Elm — a vision rooted in giving back. I hope to create a space for classes, workshops, and continued learning, where creative wellbeing is not only supported but truly embraced. Everything I create is slow-made and intentional. The concept of slow living is something we, as a community, should lean into — a sustainable, mindful way of living. One day, I hope to have a space that supports others in doing this too.
at @Earth_and_Elm to learn more about my process and get a behind-the-scenes look. Of course, you’ll also be able to purchase a collection of my work from the Wales Millennium Centre once the gift shop opens in June.
What’s next for Earth & Elm as you grow? — Any ideas on the horizon?
My little business has big plans!
I’m currently training to become a Creative Therapist, recognising the huge mindfulness benefits that both ceramics and floristry offer. I’m working towards hosting my own workshops and classes — so follow us over on instagram for updates, and don’t forget to join the newsletter waiting list when the website launches.
I really pride myself on keeping everything I do intimate and personal. Each session will be thoughtfully designed to offer a meaningful, memorable experience that reflects my unique approach.

Coming together to celebrate and support the arts and the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, friends and special guests were treated to performances from acting, musical theatre and opera graduates who have recieved vital financial assistance towards their training. The support the College recieves from it’s donors is essential in helping to nurture artistic talent and provide training opportunities for creative students, whatever their background. The College would like to thank all the guests and especially it’s dear friends, Babs and Debs Thomas for hosting this very special evening. If you would like to help support the next generation of performers, visit rwcmd.ac.uk/support to learn more about donating and becoming a patrron.
