Shwmae pawb,

February has arrived, and love is in the air. Whether you’re a die-hard romantic, happily flying solo, or somewhere in between, this month’s edition of Cardiff Life is all about celebrating love in its many forms – be that for our partners, friends, families, and perhaps most importantly, ourselves.

We’re also spotlighting local businesses offering thoughtful gifts – because nothing says ‘I care’ like something made right here.

In this issue, we’re sharing some mouthwatering vegan Valentine’s recipes to try at home, and offering our predictions for Wales’ performance in the Six Nations. Also, scattered throughout this edition, our contributors have shared what they love about our beloved city. Will you agree with their picks?

Welsh Brand Thrives After Gavin & Stacey Cameo

Aproud moment for a local business has turned into a resounding success as The Goodwash Company saw sales soar following a small appearance in the finale of the much-loved television series Gavin & Stacey. In just two days, TikTok views for the business grew from an average of 2k to almost 100k.

Mandy Powell, founder of The Goodwash Company, shared: “Being featured in Gavin & Stacey has been incredible for us. It’s especially meaningful for me as a proud Barry resident and long-time fan of the show. The programme brought a genuine sense of magic to Barry during filming. However, I didn’t know our products would appear on the show. When I spotted our ‘Sebon Dwylo’ behind Smithy in the bathroom, I let out a little scream of excitement! It was an honour to see our ethical Welsh luxury handwash showcased in a show so beloved by audiences worldwide. Witnessing the surge of interest in our brand online is the icing on the cake.”

Since its launch in 2018, The Goodwash Company has established a reputation for its sustainable, vegan, and crueltyfree skincare products. The company invests profits back into Welsh communities and charitable causes. The Business Wales Accelerated Growth Programme (AGP) has supported the company’s growth, helping the brand scale sustainably. The brand’s appearance in Gavin & Stacey has boosted sales by 20% and enhanced visibility for its bilingual brand.

Have Your Say on Cardiff Council Budget 2025

Cardiff residents are being urged to participate in a pivotal budget consultation that will influence the future of essential council services across the city. Following a more favourable financial settlement from the Welsh Government, Cardiff Council’s initially projected £60 million budget gap for 2025/26 has been significantly reduced to £23.4 million.

Despite this improvement, challenges such as inflation and increasing demand for services continue to escalate the costs of delivering vital services, including education, social care, and addressing the housing emergency. To bridge the £23.4 million shortfall, the council proposes a blend of efficiency savings, service adjustments, increased fees, and a rise in council tax.

The public consultation will remain open until midnight on Sunday, February 9, 2025. During this period, residents will have the opportunity to express their views on potential service changes and funding priorities.

Plans for a Skyscraper on the former Harlech Court site move forward

The redevelopment of Cardiff city centre is set to take another major step forward as plans for a new skyscraper on the former site of Harlech Court progress. Developers Draycott Group have submitted a planning application for a 30-storey tower that promises to reshape the skyline and breathe new life into this prime location.

Harlech Court, once home to the popular live music bar Porter’s and various office spaces, was approved for demolition in July 2024. The site’s transformation is part of a larger wave of urban renewal projects across Cardiff, marking an era of ambitious development for Wales’ capital city.

The proposed skyscraper will feature 350 high-quality residential apartments designed to cater to a range of lifestyles, from young professionals to families seeking citycentre living. The building will also house commercial spaces suitable for retail, dining, or offices.

Celebrating a Decade of Dydd Miwsig Cymru

Celebrating the impact of Welsh music and language, Dydd Miwsig Cymru marks a decade of its campaign, transforming the Welsh-language scene across Wales and beyond.

On Friday, February 7, 2025, Welsh Language Music Day (Dydd Miwsig Cymru) will commence. Serving as a celebration of Welsh music from both the past and what’s to come, honouring its significance. It will bring together Welsh music lovers from all over the world.

Dydd Miwsig Cymru has grown into a highly anticipated annual event that celebrates a diverse range of musical genres in the Welsh language, from rock and folk to modern sounds like drill and techno. Its success lies in its ability to unite people through the power of music, irrespective of language, and to offer a platform for Welsh artists to gain international recognition.

Over the past decade, Dydd Miwsig Cymru has had a farreaching impact, both in Wales and internationally. The celebration has hosted gigs in cities such as Budapest and

Brooklyn, and numerous events have taken place across Wales. Ultimately, these events serve as a continuation to promote the richness of Welsh culture and music, drawing attention from fans and media worldwide. This year, with even more opportunities for involvement, leading up to the day itself and beyond will be an even more momentous occasion.

One of the key vocal points of Dydd Miwsig Cymru is the Sound of Miwsig 2025 Awards. More than 200 artists have put themselves forward for the award, with the opportunity for up-coming, and unestablished artists, to make their mark in the Welsh music scene. This competition is fiercely anticipated, as past winners such as rappers Lloyd, Dom & Dom will be joined on the day of its announcement. The Sound of Miwsig 2025 awards are a testament to the creativity of the Welsh Music scene, with artists of all genres competing for recognition within the Welsh music scene.

While Dydd Miwsig Cymru has become an in-person celebration, the event is accessible for all, offering online events as well. No matter whether you’re based in Cardiff or

anywhere else in the world, you’ll have the opportunity to immerse yourself throughout the day. The day also continues its deep connection with schools across Wales with pupils engaging in a variety of activities from music contests to songwriting workshops.

Tara Bandito, a finalist in last year’s Sound of Miwsig competition, emphasised the importance of Dydd Miwsig Cymru’s work in the schools: “The scene in Wales is buzzing at the moment, with so much diversity in the music and the artist. To me, what’s amazing about working with Dydd Miwsig Cymru is that they work hard to bring Welsh Language music into schools so that the next generation is aware of the existence and quality of Welsh music.”

In celebration of the occasion, special Welsh-language playlists will be made available, giving individuals a chance to immerse themselves in the rich soundscapes of Wales. Past playlist curators have included renowned artists like Gwenno, DJ and presenter Katie Owen, the music magazine Klust, and the electronic music label Afran. These playlists capture the best of the Welsh music scene, offering listeners a unique glimpse into the diverse and dynamic talent of Welshspeaking artists.

Dydd Miwsig Cymru 2025 is a day for everyone, whether you speak Welsh or not. The power of music goes beyond the language itself. The day’s celebrations aim to bring people together, highlighting the importance of Welsh music and its cultural heritage. Whether you are attending in person or streaming the event online, Dydd Miwsig Cymru promises to be a dynamic celebration of music within Wales and beyond.

Welsh fashion is set to take a huge step forward in 2025, as Cambrensis founder Ioan Bowen-Pickett introduces the ground-breaking ‘Victory to the Miners’ runway show. Rooted in the rich cultural tapestry of Wales, this event promises to blend heritage with cutting-edge design, and its ambitions stretch far beyond the borders of South Wales. Ioan’s vision is both deeply personal and widely resonant, celebrating the resilience and community spirit of Wales while redefining its place in the global fashion scene.

Honouring Welsh Heritage

“The inspiration behind the ‘Victory to the Miners’ runway show is, of course, my passion for celebrating Wales’ rich cultural history, but also my frustration with the lack of opportunities in South Wales after experiencing London Fashion Week during our first show there in

February 2024,” Ioan shares in an interview with Cardiff Life Magazine. This bold tribute coincides with the 40th anniversary of the end of the Welsh miners’ strikes – a pivotal chapter in Welsh history. “By blending heritage with modern design, the aim is to honour the past while showcasing how these stories inspire what we do at Cambrensis.”

Cambrensis is a reflection of Ioan’s upbringing in South Wales and his deep connection to Welsh culture. “By incorporating elements of Welsh history, language, and tradition – things I’ve grown up on – we are creating a bridge between heritage and fashion: a platform to promote this beautiful country. It’s all I know,” he explains.

A Bold Statement for Welsh Fashion

This runway show is no ordinary event. “I hope this runway show sets the standard for Welsh fashion,” Ioan states. “It will prove that a

Victory to

project as ambitious as this can stand up next to anything seen at the major fashion weeks. Built solely on Cambrensis’ values – and with the limited fashion resources available to us in South Wales – we’re demonstrating that fashion is a powerful medium to preserve cultural identity.”

In addition to Cambrensis’ designs, the show will feature a collaborative unisex collection with Welsh sustainable streetwear designer Nia Jade, aptly named ‘Countermine’ AW24. “We chose to work with Nia for her shared Welsh values and her ability to bring a fresh perspective to our heritage-led direction,” Ioan notes. “Nia’s commitment to sustainability and her modern approach to design align perfectly with our mission to honour tradition while innovating for the future.”

A Community-Centred Celebration

The ‘Victory to the Miners’ show is not just

about fashion – it’s an immersive cultural experience. The event will feature a bilingual presenting by Rhydian Bowen Phillips, live performances from Welsh artists Subterrania and Katie Owen, and a male voice choir to set the stage. “Engaging the community lies at the heart of this event,” Ioan emphasises. “Every element is designed to create inclusivity and a true sense of belonging. All of this comes together to support a greater cause – raising funds for our charity partner, City Hospice.”

The Future of Cambrensis

While this show is currently a one-off event, Ioan remains open to the possibility of future runway experiences. “We’ll only do something similar in the future if we have something to say,” he says, reinforcing his commitment to meaningful storytelling through fashion. “Our mission is to become Wales’ biggest and best fashion house. This

runway show, I believe, is a huge milestone in our journey.”

Ioan’s ultimate message is clear: “Welsh fashion is here and relevant. By honouring our heritage, we’re proving that Wales has a unique voice in the industry – one that combines deep-rooted traditions with forward-thinking design.”

Connect with Cambrensis

To stay updated on Cambrensis and support future initiatives, follow them on social media (@cambrensis) or join their ‘Cambrensis Community’ via their newsletter or WhatsApp channel. Engaging with their content, attending events, and wearing their garments are all ways to champion this pro-Wales vision.

The ‘Victory to the Miners’ runway show is set to take place on February 8, a date sure to mark a turning point in the story of Welsh fashion. Don’t miss this extraordinary celebration of heritage, creativity, and resilience.

Valentine’s Day. A day of love, romance, and… overwhelming pressure to find someone to spend it with. But fear not, singletons of Cardiff! This year, we’re ditching the doom and gloom and embracing the freedom of flying solo. Because let’s be honest, Valentine’s Day can be just as much fun when you’re embracing your inner independent spirit.

Embrace Galentine's

Instead of succumbing to the pressure, why not use Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to celebrate singlehood? Gather your girlfriends for Galentine’s Day. Indulge in a delicious brunch at Milkwood in Pontcanna, followed by a relaxing spa day at The Parkgate Hotel. Alternatively, enjoy some delicious cocktails and lively conversation at a bar like The Dead Canary or Lab 22. Or, cuddle up on the sofa with your besties and watch a classic rom-com marathon.

Indulge Your Inner Foodie

Treat yourself to a gourmet meal at one of

Cardiff’s many acclaimed restaurants, such as The Potted Pig, Pasture or Aura. Perhaps explore the world of wine Nighthawks, or pack a picnic basket with your favourite treats and enjoy a relaxing afternoon in Bute Park.

Pampering and Culture

Why not indulge in some retail therapy at one of Cardiff’s many shops and boutiques, or catch a captivating performance at the Wales Millennium Centre or the Sherman Theatre? The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is playing.

Celebrate You!

Remember: Valentine’s Day is just one day of the year. Focus on celebrating yourself and enjoying your own company. Whether you’re spending the day with friends and family, or simply enjoying your solitude, remember to embrace the freedom and independence that comes with being single.

Socialise and Explore

For those seeking a more social experience, host a ‘Singles’ Night In’ game night. Invite

your single friends over for a fun game night with board games, card games, or video games. Alternatively, explore the beautiful Welsh countryside with a day trip to the Brecon Beacons or the Gower Peninsula. If you’re feeling adventurous, why not try speed dating? It’s a fun and efficient way to meet new people.

Take a Fitness Class

Feel-good endorphins are the ultimate mood booster. Sign up for a yoga session or a spin class. You’ll come away feeling strong, accomplished, and ready to tackle just about anything.

Learn Something New

Valentine’s Day can be the perfect opportunity to embrace self-improvement and discover new passions. Whether it’s a local language class, a pottery workshop, or even just diving deeper into a hobby you’ve always been curious about, learning something new can be incredibly rewarding. It boosts your confidence, provides a sense of accomplishment, and opens up new social circles.

Fall Head Over Heels for Your Voice

A Love Letter to Self-Expression

orget roses and chocolates! I’m declaring my love for...my voice this Valentine’s Day. Crazy, right? Well, maybe not. Hear me out. Your voice is your most intimate part – an utterly unique instrument only you can play. It’s an amazing tool that deserves as much love as the rest of us this February. Whether you’re a CEO commanding a room, a singer sharing your soul, or a guardian connecting with your child, how you sound matters.

The most common phrase I hear from clients is, “I hate the sound of my voice.” It’s fascinating that, in an era of mental health awareness, body positivity, and self-love, critiquing your voice remains one of the last bastions of socially acceptable selfhatred. My work as a Speaking with Confidence Coach aims to change that.

Why do we cringe when we hear our voices on a recording? There are a few reasons, and they’re more scientific than you might think:

1. Voice Confrontation: Hearing an Imposter

When we speak, we hear our voice through both air conduction (outer ear) and bone conduction (inner ear). But when listening to a recording, we only hear the air-conducted version. That’s why your recorded voice can feel like hearing a stranger – the shock is real! It’s like seeing yourself in an unflattering photo.

2. Self-Perception Clash

Hearing your recorded voice can challenge your self-image. The person you know best suddenly sounds unfamiliar. This discrepancy feels uncomfortable, and we tend to react by criticising the sound rather than accepting it.

3. The Inner Critic Strikes

Negative self-talk often targets our voice. The inner critic, trying to protect us from judgment, bullies the outer voice. Recognising this dynamic can help us quiet that critical inner chatter.

4. We’ve Been Down this Road Before

For many, voice insecurities stem from past experiences. I remember feeling self-conscious about my Welsh accent when I went to university in “posh Surrey.” Comments like “Oh, you’re so cute” or hearing people attempt my accent made me dull it down to fit in. But your accent – and your voice – is a beautiful part of who you are. Please don’t let thoughtless remarks turn into long-term insecurities.

Practical Steps to Fall IN Love with Your Voice

1. Practice Self-Listening with Kindness

Imagine you’re listening to a good friend share their story. Approach your voice with the same empathy and understanding.

2. Celebrate Your Voice’s Unique Qualities

❝ I love the artistic community in Cardiff, it’s so lovely to pop somewhere like Chapter Arts Centre and know you’ll bump into someone wonderful!❞

Charlotte Lewis

The Science of a Confident Voice

Investing in your voice pays off in many ways:

l People with more relaxed, confident voices earn significant more money over their lifetime more over their lifetime than those with less confident voices (Duke University & University of California, 2012).

l A Yale study found that people with expressive voices were seen as more persuasive during business pitches, regardless of the content.

l A University of Melbourne study showed a 25% boost in self-confidence for people who practised vocal techniques for six weeks.

l Harvard Business School found that people with dynamic voices were perceived as more attractive and trustworthy, leading to more successful interactions.

Think of your voice as a vintage record – full of character and charm. Embrace the scratches and pops that make it uniquely yours. Consider how your vocal personality makes you memorable. Many celebrities – from James Earl Jones to Adele – are celebrated for their distinctive voices.

3. Affirm Your Voice’s Worth

Write a Valentine’s card to your voice. Thank it for being there when you need it, for expressing your truth, and for making you one in a million. These affirmations can also serve as part of pre-talk rituals to help you feel relaxed and ready, ‘My voice is unique, my voice is excited to help me in my time of need…’

l Ultimately, falling in love with your voice is a gift –to yourself and to those who hear it. Imagine the authentic connections you could build or how much you could stand out in our noisy world.

This Valentine’s Day, don’t just send chocolates or flowers – send yourself a reminder to love your voice. Speak kindly to yourself, embrace your quirks, and share your unique message with the world. The more you love your voice, the more others will too. Your voice is more than an incidental sound – it’s an expression of who you are. Let it be heard. Let it be loved.

ove is in the air, and it is time to get the perfect look for those Valentine’s plans. It is an occasion to embrace your romantic and stylish self. Whether you are going out for a romantic dinner, a cute day date or a cosy night in with the girls for Galentine’s. Make the ultimate expression of confidence and love by embracing the elegance and personality in your outfit choices.

After all, legendary designer Diane Von Furstenberg said, “Style is something each of us already has, all we need to do is find it.” Find your style with bold colours, flirtatious patterns, and adoring accessories. Prepare to explore the latest trends from Cardiff’s top retailers for the season of love.

Embrace the Season of Love with Colour

When it comes to Valentine’s Day everyone gravitates to the usual reds and pinks and with

burgundy being a wardrobe essential in the last year, it’s easy to go to our creature comforts. The question is do we still drift to these colours, or do we be brave and bold and try something outside our ordinary?

Try to embrace Pantone’s Colour of the Year, Mocha Mousse, for a chic and sophisticated twist on Valentine’s style. Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Colour Institute explained that the shade was chosen because it “expresses a level of thoughtful indulgence. Sophisticated and lush, yet at the same time an unpretentious classic. It appeals to our desire for comfort.” This colour could be the perfect base for those Galentine’s’ plans or activity dates. Go for a pair of mocha mousse leggings and a neutral cream sweatshirt for those cosy nights in with a takeaway. Or opt for a mocha mousse wrap top paired with a pair of high-waist black jeans or leather-look trousers for the perfect date night outfit. Finish with a bold lip and

gold accents. It is a beautifully neutral colour, and it blends well with warm tones like gold and rust.

If you’re anything like me, you have a wardrobe full of black clothes because you know it goes with everything and the thought of wearing such bright colours scares you. Break those blacks out for a chic dinner at one of Cardiff’s best restaurants and as Karl Lagerfeld said, “One is never over-dressed or under-dressed with a little black dress”. Pair this ensemble with some red accents or heart-shaped accessories such as heart-shaped earrings or a clutch bag.

We shouldn’t just cast the traditional colour palettes away. If it’s your first Valentine’s Day and you’re keeping it casual with a daytime activity, there’s no need to go overboard with an extravagant outfit. Choose something relaxed and understated instead. A blush pink camisole with skinny jeans and a leather jacket

Gold

Ola Polar Fleece Scarf in Pink Heart Cupid Print – Lucy & Yak £29.00
Faux Leather Heart Cross Body Bag –Accessorize £32.00

with ankle boots could be the perfect outfit. Add some heart-shaped accessories for a chic touch. If you are ready to embrace the season’s colour palette, try colour-blocking with those staple reds and pinks. Try a pink oversized jumper with a red midi skirt, and add in some white trainers. Remember Valentine’s Day may be the day of love but it’s also about letting your personality shine through.

Valentine's, Work and THE Weather in Between

Just because it is Valentine’s Day, it doesn’t mean that you need to freeze. It is Cardiff after all, we’re not exactly known for the warm weather. Don’t get me wrong, I love a reason to dress up and channel my inner Anne Hathaway during her makeover montage in The Devil Wears Prada, but I am all about keeping warm and comfy too.

Cosy knits are a wardrobe must-have and the best way to get the winter look and celebrate the day of love is by playing with layers, add a chunky knit to a skirt, tights and boots. Reuse those Christmas party sparkly tights for a glittering touch. New Look and H&M have some great staples that don’t have to be saved for those annual occasions.

Worried about needing a quick change from work to dinner? Modern tailoring has been a common theme over the years with more people opting to take in the trend with its clean lines and precision. It has paved the way for designers to experiment and modernise the style and this is what makes it have that seamless transition from professional office settings to casual outings. It also works on creating a neutral style of inclusivity allowing people to bend the gender rules. A lot of modern tailoring can be seen in Cardiff’s nightlife with the oversized blazer dresses and tailored trousers becoming a wardrobe staple.

It’s an ideal option for transitioning seamlessly from the office to dinner dates with friends or that special someone.

Material Girl

Lace, velvet, and satin capture the romance and elegance of Valentine’s Day perfectly. Lace, with its delicate and intricate finish, exudes femininity and elegance. This makes it ideal for soft and dreamy outfits. Velvet, on the other hand, adds that touch of warmth. Its rich texture makes it a standout choice for the occasion. Satin is a favourite with a smooth and glossy finish, it offers an air of glamour, perfect for capturing the allure of the day. Satin Pyjamas are a classic choice for those Galantine nights with Prosecco and a cheesy rom-com. Experiment with combining these fabrics, a lace dress with satin accents or a velvet jumpsuit paired with satin accessories. These fabrics together create a harmonious blend of softness and richness and ensure you’ll feel stylish and unforgettable.

10 Ways to Share The Love This February

February is the month of love, but it is about more than just flowers and chocolates. It is the perfect time to focus on how we can support those in our community who need it most. Love is not just something we share with our partners; it can be extended to our neighbours, friends, and strangers.

Cardiff is home to several incredible charities doing vital work, and they need our help. Whether through donations, volunteering, or simply raising awareness, there are many ways to share the love this Valentine’s season and beyond.

1 Rehome Old Furniture

If planning a spring clean, why not donate your unwanted furniture to NU Life Furniture? Your items could make a huge difference to someone starting fresh, and they even offer a collection service. Based in Cardiff, NU Life is a charity dedicated to giving pre-loved furniture a new lease of life, providing essential items to those who need them most. By donating, you’re not just clearing out your home — you’re making a lasting impact on someone’s life, helping them build a home and a new beginning. https://nulifefurniture.co.uk/donate/

2 Become a Dog Walker

Becoming a dog walker is a great way to give back. Charities like Cardiff Dogs Home rely on volunteers to help walk and care for dogs waiting for their forever homes. It is a chance to give these dogs the attention they need, while also enjoying the benefits of fresh air and exercise. Volunteering your time could change a dog’s life — and you’ll find your new best friend. https://www.cardiffdogshome.co.uk/support-us/dog-walking/

3 Donate Baby Items

If your little one has outgrown baby clothes, toys, or equipment, consider donating them to Cwtch Baby Bank. This Cardiff-based charity collects and redistributes essential items to families in need, supporting those facing hardship. Donating your outgrown items ensures they are put to good use, directly making a positive impact on families in our community.

4 Volunteer Your Time

Charity work doesn’t always mean donating money — your time is just as valuable. Whether it is shopping for others, offering online mentoring, or taking part in community schemes like litter picking, there are countless ways to make a difference. Volunteering allows you to give back and connect with those around you. Volunteer Cardiff is the perfect place to find opportunities in your area.

5 Create a Care Package

Creating a care package is a meaningful way to offer support to those in need. Love Grace, a Cardiff-based charity, is collecting handbags filled with toiletries for women affected by domestic violence. These simple yet essential packages provide both practical items and a sense of care to women rebuilding their lives. By donating a handbag, you’re showing these women they are supported and valued during a difficult time.

6 Take on a Challenge

Support your community while pushing yourself to achieve something great. Whether it’s planning a fundraising event, setting a personal goal, or rallying friends and family for a good cause, taking on a challenge is a powerful way to make a lasting impact. By stepping outside your comfort zone, you not only help others but also accomplish something incredible. Big Moose, a Cardiff-based mental health charity, is a great cause to consider for your challenge. Your efforts will help people with their mental health, prevent suicide, and reduce homelessness.

7 Have a Wardrobe Clear Out

We all have clothes hiding in the back of our wardrobes that we haven’t worn in years. Now’s the perfect time to clear them out and donate them to one of the many charity shops around Cardiff. It’s a simple way to declutter your space, support your community, and make a difference with items you no longer use.

8 Donate Blood

Donating blood is one of the easiest and most impactful ways to help others. Every donation can save up to three lives, supporting those in need in Cardiff and across Wales. Local donation sessions are held regularly by Welsh Blood Service, and you can easily book an appointment online. By donating, you’re offering a lifeline to accident victims, surgery patients, and those undergoing cancer treatment.

❝ There’s a warmth in the air here that makes it easy to feel at home, and that kind of openness is something special.❞

9 Support Local

Shopping locally helps keep our community thriving; supporting small shops, cafes, and independent restaurants that rely on local customers isn’t just good for the economy — it’s a way to connect and create a more vibrant, resilient Cardiff. Whether it’s picking up a gift from a local boutique or grabbing a coffee from your neighbourhood cafe, your purchases make a big difference.

10 Organise a Food Drive

Cardiff’s local food banks rely on community support to provide meals to families and individuals facing financial hardship. You can start a food drive at work, school, or with friends and family by collecting non-perishable items like tins, pasta, and rice. Once collected, you can donate them to a local food bank, like Cardiff Foodbank, where they will be distributed to those who need them most.

What contributes to a successful Valentine’s Day is the personal touch that adds meaning to your space and interior. Subtle enhancements to your home can create meaningful memories when they are genuine, sophisticated, and elegant.

2025 is the year of minimalism, with accent colours to elevate your home. Whether planning a romantic dinner, hosting Galentine’s Day, or enjoying a relaxed night in, here are some styling tips to help elevate your home this Valentine’s Day.

Neutral Colour Pallet and Textures

When styling your home for Valentine’s Day, it is easy to be tempted by an overload of pinks and reds. While it is important to stick to colours associated with Valentine’s Day, make sure to incorporate more neutral tones so that things do not feel overwhelming. Feel free to include colours such as ivory, cream, blush and beige, allowing for a more sophisticated aesthetic. Your home will feel timeless, and subtle pops of red and pink will make your space feel cohesive and balanced.

Incorporate a variety of textures into your interior as well. This can be achieved through tablecloths, linens, bed sheets, and cushions. Not only does it elevate your home visually, but it makes your space feel more elegant.

Personal Touches

Personal touches reflect your unique relationship with your loved ones. On Valentine’s Day, displaying photos throughout your home is a beautiful way to highlight your shared memories. Whether it is framed pictures of special moments with your partner, family or friends, photographs can evoke a deep sense of nostalgia.

Styling Your Home This Valentine's Day

For a more personalised display, consider printing blackand-white photos for a timeless, authentic feel. Stringing photos with ribbon to create a garland adds even more visual impact.

Soft Lighting

Lighting is central when it comes to creating a cosy atmosphere, making your home feel intimate and inviting. Soft, warm light creates a lovely ambience, and the right lighting choice can make your home feel even more welcoming.

Fairy lights are an easy and whimsical way to introduce soft lighting. Try draping them along the edges of windows, over mantels or across walls. Candles are also a great way to add warmth to your home. Incorporate a mix of different-sized candles and holders to create a more unique style.

Cushions and throws

Cushions are easy to swap out all year round, so no matter the season you can add a personal touch to your home. Consider incorporating reds, pinks and tones of blush- colours that evoke warmth, infusing your home with a sense of romance.

A throw blanket is another quick way to elevate your interior. Opt for one in a soft, luxurious fabric for comfort. Personally, a red gingham throw is a timeless and playful addition that adds a pop of colour to your living room or bedroom.

Romantic Tablescape

A minimalistic yet elegant tablescape is essential for your home on Valentine’s Day. Start by choosing simple dishes and glassware. Candles should be your centrepiece. You can then place a few delicate chocolates or other sweet treats around the table for a touch of sweetness. Consider adding some homemade treats for an even more welcoming feeling. A bouquet of roses, tulips of even your partner’s favourite flower can create a stunning visual focal point as well.

Fresh Flowers

There is nothing more special than filling your home with fresh flowers this Valentine’s Day. Not only do they look beautiful, but they also bring a fresh fragrance that enhances the overall atmosphere in your home. You can present your flowers in unique vases of jars to give them an even more personalised display. Try tying some ribbon around the vase as well. Fresh flowers bring an extra layer of meaning to Valentine’s Day, helping to elevate your interior in a way that is both simple and impactful.

Subtle accents and personal touches ultimately make Valentine’s Day special in your home. By thoughtfully curating your space with warmth, colour, and sentimentality, you will make your home feel like a warm cwtch. Creating a space that is unique to the people you love will make it feel extra special.

Sharing the Beauty of the Welsh Language

For Heather Broster, language is more than a means of communication—it’s a gateway to culture, history, and identity. As the founder of We Learn Welsh, Heather has made it her mission to inspire others to embrace Cymraeg and to make the journey of learning a little less daunting.

“I started the We Learn Welsh website in 2018 as a way to share the beauty of Cymraeg with the world while improving my vocabulary,” Heather explains in an interview with Cardiff Life. What began as a personal endeavour soon grew into a supportive community for fellow learners. After a pandemic-induced pause in 2020, Heather revived the platform in 2024 with renewed energy and purpose, driven by her belief in the importance of preserving Wales’ linguistic heritage.

Born in Canada, Heather’s language journey has taken her across continents. She’s lived in Italy and Japan, immersing herself in both languages. Yet, moving to Wales awakened her desire to learn Welsh. “The Welsh language is an integral part of Wales’ culture and history, and it would be a great loss if it were to fade away,” she says passionately.

Barriers to Learning Welsh—And Breaking them down

Heather is candid about the challenges facing Welsh learners. Access to Welsh speakers, especially in less densely populated areas, can be limited, and even those with some knowledge of the language may lack confidence. “Many feel their Welsh isn’t ‘good enough’ for learners, which can be intimidating for both sides,” she admits.

A nother misconception she’s keen to dispel is that adults can’t learn a new language as effectively as children. Heather points out that adults often face distractions and time constraints, rather than any biological disadvantage. “If adults were immersed in Welsh to the same degree that children are immersed in their mother tongue, fluency would come much faster,” she notes, drawing on her own experiences in Japan.

Practicality also looms as a concern, with English dominating daily life. “For learners to succeed, we have to create a sense of necessity for ourselves – finding opportunities to weave Welsh into everyday situations.”

Heather's Top Tips for Welsh Beginners

Heather offers a wealth of practical advice for those starting their Welsh-language journey:

Immerse Yourself: “Listen to Welsh music and radio, watch TV shows in Welsh, and participate in groups where Welsh speakers gather. The more you expose yourself, the quicker you’ll learn.”

Speak from Day One: “Don’t wait until you feel ready—just start speaking. It’s the key to progress, even if it feels awkward at first.”

Embrace Mistakes: “You’re far more aware of your errors than anyone else. Most people will appreciate your effort.”

Heather is also a fan of modern tools, recommending the Say Something in Welsh app and suggesting learners explore resources from skilled tutors.

Connecting to Welsh Culture and Heritage

Learning Welsh, according to Heather, is about more than just words; it’s about unlocking the heart of Wales. “Language plays a vital role in connecting you to a people’s way of thinking, culture, and history – elements that cannot be fully conveyed in another language.”

She’s observed a deep sense of regret among many non-Welsh-speaking Welsh people, who feel they’ve missed an opportunity to connect with their heritage. Stories like these fuel Heather’s commitment to We Learn Welsh, which has already reached thousands through its engaging reels, infographics, and a rapidly growing Facebook community.

What's Next for We Learn Welsh?

Heather’s latest venture is a free Welsh Word of the Day newsletter, bringing etymology, pronunciation, and example sentences straight to subscribers’ inboxes. It’s just another way she’s making Welsh accessible and exciting.

For Heather, the journey is far from over. “Every day, we receive comments from people expressing how much they love our content. It’s heartwarming to think we’re helping make Welsh just a little easier for people to learn.”

Heather's 10 Reasons You Should Learn Welsh in 2025

l To integrate into the community

l To help your children with their schoolwork

l More work opportunities

l To gain a new hobby

l To keep the longest-spoken language of Britain alive in our communities

l Beneficial for your health

l Further health benefits

l To improve self-confidence

l It gives you a strong sense of identity

Dydd Sant Ffolant yng Nghaerdydd

gan Indigo Jones

Dyma’r amser mwyaf rhamantus o’r flwyddyn, na ddydw i ddim yn sôn am ddiwrnod y grempog. Er gallech chi ddadlau fod hynny yw fy hoff ddiwrnod o’r flwyddyn, ond nid dyna bwrpas yr erthygl hon!

sport in the city

Welcome to The Bluebird Bulletin, Cardiff Life’s new section dedicated to Cardiff City FC and sport in the city, brought to you by lifelong supporter, James Farrow. Here, we delve into the Bluebirds’ upcoming fixtures, share insights, and forecast predictions for Cardiff City. With February packed full of crucial matches, let’s look at what is in store for Cardiff City.

VFA CUP 4TH ROUNDSTOKE CITY

Cardiff City travel to Stoke for an allChampionship FA Cup tie, offering an overdue opportunity to progress to the fifth round for the first time since 2014. Fans have announced their frustration at an all-championship affair regularly going to Stoke City each season, although the game is very winnable. Cardiff’s recent 4th round history has been unkind, with memorable away days, but tough draws against Manchester City and Liverpool. Fans have been too familiar with early exits in the 3rd round against lower-league opposition. The Bluebirds will hope this year’s campaign breaks the trend.

The Bluebirds’ 1-0 win at Bramall Lane in the previous round, courtesy of Cian Ashford capitalising on a defensive mistake, was a statement victory. However, Cardiff will remember December’s 2-2 draw at the Bet365 Stadium, where they conceded late. This time, they will aim to dampen Stoke’s dreams and make it to the last 16.

Prediction: Stoke City 1–2 Cardiff City

VPORTSMOUTH (February 11)

Cardiff travel to Fratton Park, where they have not lost a league fixture against Portsmouth there since 1974. Earlier this season, the Bluebirds claimed a 2-0 win at the CCS, and they will look to extend that record against a side also battling relegation.

Portsmouth have been in a comparable situation to Cardiff this season, contending with relegation but slowly improving as the season developed. There is a return for a few ex-Bluebirds, including Josh Murphy Cardiff’s record signing fee of £12 million when they were promoted to the Premier League in 2018, as well as Marlon Pack who featured in the 2020 championship play-offs.

Both teams are desperate for points, and the stakes are high in what could be a cagey affair. Cardiff fans will view this as a must-win six-pointer.

Prediction: Portsmouth 1–1 Cardiff City

VBRISTOL CITY (February

15)

The Severnside Derby returns, one of the most anticipated fixtures of Cardiff’s season. Hosting Bristol City for the 104th meeting, Cardiff will hope to improve their tally of wins in this historic rivalry. Recent history favours the Bluebirds, with three wins and a draw in the last four encounters. The game in October saw Ollie Tanner score one of the goals of Cardiff’s season and were unlucky to not come away with all 3 points.

Bristol’s strong away form and the threat of striker Anis Mehmeti, one of the Championship’s top scorers, make this a stern test. However, Cardiff’s reshuffled midfield, led by Calum Chambers, has added stability and allowed the attack to flourish. A high-stakes derby could see Cardiff rise to the occasion.

Prediction:

VPLYMOUTH ARGYLE (February 22)

Cardiff’s 5-0 demolition of Plymouth in October was a highlight of the season, with five different scorers lighting up the CCS and a scoreline not seen since 2017. This time, Home Park will provide a sterner challenge, as Plymouth rely on their stronger home-thanaway form to stave off relegation.

While Cardiff have struggled for consistent results throughout the season, their squad depth and experience in the Championship could tip the scales. This is a must-win fixture to avoid being drawn further into the relegation battle. The last encounter at Home Park saw Cardiff lose 3-1, however, the Bluebirds will look to go there as favourites.

Prediction: Plymouth Argyle 1–2 Cardiff City

February promises to be a pivotal period for Cardiff City, with opportunities to secure vital points in the league and a potential cup run to excite the fans. While challenges lie ahead, the Bluebirds have shown resilience and flashes of brilliance that could turn the tide in their favour.

Through thick and thin the feeling of your local team succeeding in any game is an extraordinary feeling that very few things in life can replicate ❞

Looking Ahead to the Six Nations

From Glory Days to a New Era

Cast your mind back, dear reader, twenty years and a cold February day in the nation’s capital. It was curtain up on a new Six Nations Championship and daffodil heads and sparkly stetsons were enjoying their halcyon days; Welsh rugby, however, not so much.

It’s the hope that kills you, and as with every other year, Wales fans would start the tournament with the vigour of a dream even though the illusive Grand Slam hadn’t been achieved by the men in red, since 1978. The proceeding 15 years had brought a single Five/Six Nations title and a drawer full of wooden spoons.

But cometh the hour, cometh the man. Against England in the opener, a Bridgend boy’s boot would be enough to seal a famous and historic win. ‘Shave away, Gavin’ is the immortal commentary line uttered by the late, great Eddie Butler, ready to consign the win to the history books, but perhaps at that moment regarded as a one-off victory. Few could predict the fivematch run Wales had embarked on. On the road for 3 weeks, ticking off the boys in blue; Italy then France and Scotland dispatched, until a homecoming showdown with the Irish.

With the Grand Slam and Triple Crown in Wales’ possession, a day like it hadn’t been seen for 27 years, but unlike the false dawns that had proceeded it, for the next 20 years, Wales fans would be spoiled with success.

We’ve all become very used to Wales winning in the spring, which is perhaps why this new period of pain feels all that much worse. Last year’s Six Nations saw Wales finish bottom of the log and sadly the autumn internationals that we just watched haven’t renewed much hope or faith in the national side for the impending tournament with our nearest neighbours.

But there are always positives to take. As much of a blow as Dewi Lake’s injury has been, his absence from the squad and as captain has highlighted the young leadership options Wales has come through.

Players like Jac Morgan and Dafydd Jenkins don’t remember Wales’ 90s doldrums, because neither of them were even born. Ospreys back row Morgan looks like a big part of the next generation for Wales, he can play 6, 7 and 8 and whilst small compared to other internationals his position is a workhorse and surely a firm foundation for the threefeathers future.

Dafydd Jenkins plays his club rugby over the border, he’s been plying his trade at Exeter

where he did his degree but there’s never been any question of his commitment to his home nation of Wales. At only 22 he’s a shining light in the English Premiership and according to his head coach at Exeter Chiefs, Rob Baxter, a British & Irish Lion in waiting.

It’s not all on the shoulders of Wales’ youth though; Tomos and Liam Williams could be depended on to bring their English Premiership form back home to Wales. Tomos has been plying his trade in cherry and white this season and he’s impressed the Gloucester faithful with the dancing footwork Cardiff fans were devastated to lose. Liam ‘Sanjay’ Williams, a new dad and one of the Squad Fathers these days, is a sight for sore eyes following Wales’ backfield woes in the autumn.

And if experience and seniority are needed, the return of one of Wales’ greatest of the modern era can only be celebrated. At

last, the inclusion in the squad of the great Taulupe Faletau following multiple injuries and limited game time since the 2023 Rugby World Cup. His talismanic presence cannot be underestimated. Is it a coincidence that Wales current record 12-match losing streak has happened during the Welsh-Tongan’s lay off?

Wales can only play what’s in front of them, as the adage goes, so what of the other runners and riders? Up first, it’s Friday Night Lights in Paris to kick off the competition and perhaps Wales’ best chance of beating France is catching them cold in the opener this freezing February.

Last year Italy embarrassed us at The Principality Stadium despite a second-half comeback to be remembered. Whilst tough to admit, perhaps this match against this once walkover opposition is Wales’ biggest game of the tournament.

Round 3 will see Ireland in Cardiff and a very familiar face is their head coach for a temporary run. Suspicions they’re a spent force, but young Sam Prendergast at 10 looks built for the big time.

Up to Scotland after a week’s break for the Doddie Weir Cup. They’re a side only ever building in confidence and style under Gregor Townsend, but one thing’s for sure, win or lose, a better Six Nations night out is tough to find…!

Then finally, the auld enemy. For many, it won’t matter if Wales comes into this game with a Grand Slam or a Wooden Spoon on the line, it’s the only one that matters, because as the song says; As long as we beat the English, we don’t care…

The Rise of Plant-Based Eating

As more people shift towards plant-based diets, veganism is emerging from its niche to become a sustainable lifestyle choice. Once primarily associated with the annual Veganuary campaign, plant-based eating is now gaining momentum, with more and more people adopting a plant-based diet well beyond January.

In Cardiff, the rise of plant-based eating is evident in the growing surge of vegan-friendly cafes and restaurants. Local businesses are embracing plant-based menus, offering exciting and diverse options that appeal not only to vegans but also to people looking to explore plant-based diets.

If you’re looking for some inspiration, here are some local plant-based cafes and restaurants that’ll inspire you to learn more about veganism and immerse yourself in an ever-growing community, while also providing advice to make the transition to plant-based eating less intimidating.

Oat and Bean

Founded by Leanne Tucker in May 2024, Oat and Bean was created to make veganism accessible for all, offering everything from brunches and lunches to sweet treats. The café provides a welcoming space for those wanting to try plant-based dishes. With options like sourdough bread topped with hummus, roasted tomatoes, and sunflower seeds,

or plant-based pancakes with bacon, maple syrup, or fruit and cream, there’s a variety of diverse dishes to try. The café itself offers a warm and welcoming environment, whether that be a place to work or catch up with friends, Leanne wanted to create a place that serves delicious, approachable plant-based food without the intimidation of trying new diets. Her advice for those looking to add more plant-based meals? “Start small- little changes add up”.

The Pie Box

The Pie Box was born out of a demand for vegan food that went beyond typical options like pizza and burgers. With a focus on pies, baked goods, and brunch, The Pie Box offers something unique for the growing vegan community, being the first bakery and pie shop, to serve unique and original dishes, outside the stereotype of pizzas and burgers. With an evergrowing menu that is constantly changing, to offer new and exciting meals, The Pie Box is a place to check out and return to. Top 10 LISA J EVANS WITH

In this edition of Top 10, Cardiff Life Magazine caught up with author Lisa J Evans to discuss her debut novel, Inside Her, a powerful and moving exploration of identity, love, and mental health within the LGBTQ+ community.

1

Cardiff Life: What inspired you to write Inside Her, and what message do you hope readers take away from it?

Lisa J Evans: “Inside Her was inspired by my desire to explore the complexities of identity, love, and mental health, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community. I hope readers take away the message that it’s OK to embrace who you are, even when the journey feels shattering. Healing and happiness are possible, even in the darkest of circumstances.”

2

Cardiff Life: The book is described as a mustread LGBTQ+ novel. How did you approach crafting authentic and relatable characters for the LGBTQ+ community?

Lisa J Evans: “Authenticity was incredibly important to me. I wanted Jess and Georgia to feel like real people, not just characters on a page. I drew on my own experiences and the stories I’ve heard from others in the LGBTQ+ community, including many close friends.”

3

Cardiff Life: Did you draw from any personal experiences or stories when writing this novel?

Lisa J Evans: “Absolutely. While the plot is fictional, many of the emotions and challenges the characters face stem from my own experience of trying to navigate life. Even some of the more disturbing parts of the book are very personal to me, and it was cathartic to write about them like I was saying it out loud for the first time. And, of course, as the book is based in Cardiff, it was a no-brainer to set the book in the city.”

4

Cardiff Life: How did you balance the emotional depth and any lighter moments in the narrative?

Lisa J Evans: “I wanted the book to reflect the highs and lows of life. While the story dives into some heavy, harrowing themes, there are also moments of joy, humour, and tenderness. Those lighter moments are crucial, I think.”

5

Cardiff Life: Are there any particular authors or books that influenced your writing style or approach to this story?

Lisa J Evans: “The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath is one of my favourite books; it captures a raw sense of powerlessness, chaos, and desperation as the protagonist descends into madness. That emotional intensity inspired how I approached themes of depression and anxiety in Inside Her. I also admire Liza James for her dark, queer, and complex narratives. Her ability to create spiky, toothy characters encouraged me to lean into the messiness of human emotions and relationships. While I wouldn’t dare compare myself to these incredible authors, their work has undoubtedly shaped my perspective as a writer.”

6

Cardiff Life: What has been the most surprising response from readers since publishing Inside Her?

Lisa J Evans: “The response – especially from American readers – has been incredible. I never expected a book so deeply rooted in Welsh culture to resonate overseas. Hearing from readers who say they’ve felt seen or understood because of the story has been incredibly moving. That said, the book does come with multiple trigger warnings, so I know it’s not for everyone. The most surprising thing has been the number of private messages I’ve received from people confiding in me about their sexuality. One reader even shared that they found the courage to leave an abusive partner because of my book. That brought me to tears.”

7

Cardiff Life: If you could give one piece of advice to aspiring writers, particularly those focusing on LGBTQ+ stories, what would it be?

Lisa J Evans: “Write the story that scares you the most - the one that feels too personal or too risky. That’s where the magic happens. And don’t be afraid to centre LGBTQ+ characters and experiences unapologetically. The world needs more diverse stories. Why not yours, baby?”

8

9

Cardiff Life: What’s next for you as an author?

Lisa J Evans: “The Audible version of Inside Her is in the works, and I have four more books on the way.”

Cardiff Life: Cardiff has a vibrant LGBTQ+ community. How did that shape the narrative?

Lisa J Evans: “Cardiff’s LGBTQ+ community is incredibly inspiring. Its openness, resilience, and sense of belonging are things I wanted to reflect in the story. The city’s vibrant atmosphere – its Pride events, queer-friendly spaces (shout-out to The Queer Emporium especially), and diverse people – gave the book its heart.”

10

Cardiff Life: Are there any Cardiff venues or events that inspired parts of the story?

Lisa J Evans: “Roath Park, fictionalised as Lake Calon Park, plays a central role in the book. It felt like the perfect backdrop for some of the most pivotal moments in the story. I also drew inspiration from Cardiff’s sparkly queer nightlife.”

Dwynwen's Day - A Tale of Love: Past, Present, and Future

Love, loss, and redemption are common themes in modern romance tales, but what about stories of a more archaic origin? The story of Dwynwen’s Day goes back to the 5th century in Wales and tells us about the heart-wrenching tragedy of a Welsh princess named Dwynwen who sacrificed her chance at love to protect the happiness of others.

Dwynwen was said to be the most beautiful of King Brychan Brycheiniog’s 24 daughters and caught the eye of the northern prince Maelon Dafodrill. The two fell in love quickly and wished to marry, but the king had already promised Dwynwen to another and so their union was denied. Although Dwynwen loved Maelon, she did not wish to disobey her father. Heartbroken and facing the reality of her situation, she ran away into the woods to wallow in her despair.

Dwynwen wept among the trees, cold and alone, until suddenly, an angel descended from the heavens to speak with her. The

❝ I love Welsh history because it highlights how connected the people and landscape of Wales has always been, and I think that connection is beautiful. ❞

Paige Thomas

angel offered a sweet potion that would allow Dwynwen to forget Maelon and with him her pain, however, when she drank the elixir Maelon turned at once to ice. Whether it was in pity for her agony or to reward her loyal servitude, God granted her three wishes. Dwynwen used her first wish to thaw Maelon, her second was to ensure that she would never marry, and her third and final wish was that God would help all couples in love so that they would not have to suffer as she had.

In thanks for the gift of the three wishes, Dwynwen dedicated her life to God, travelling to the coast of Anglesey where she opened Dwynwen’s Church on a small peninsula. The church is now seen as a holy site and is still to this day visited by lovers who wish to pay homage to St Dwynwen in thanks for watching over them. Throughout the church’s history, the site has been a popular one for pilgrimage by lovers young and old, with people often leaving offerings to the patron saint upon their arrival. During the Tudor period, the church even became one of the richest in Anglesey due to its popularity by association with the story of St Dwynwen.

It is even said that on the island, stands a well aptly named Dwynwen’s Well, having magical eels that can tell couples if their love is destined to last. Some folk tales instruct lovers to test the longevity of their relationship by scattering breadcrumbs and a handkerchief onto the surface of the well and say that if they are moved by the eels that live within, the love will last and prosper. Others say that merely seeing the eels partake in activity near the surface signals good fortune in love. Either way, it is a well-loved tradition that people still partake in to this day.

Today, on January 25, Dwynwen’s Day is still celebrated in Wales and in fact, has been increasing in popularity in recent years with many people likening it to Valentine’s Day. It is a time for loved ones to show their appreciation for each other, often by trading gifts, cards, and other tokens of affection. What can be taken from the story of St Dwynwen though, as in many folk tales, there are lessons to be learned.

The story of Dwynwen teaches us that love is a cause worth dedicating yourself to. Dwynwen’s story shows us how she dedicated her life to all the lovers of the present and the future. She teaches us that to make a relationship last, dedicating your time to it is essential, after all, love is one of the best things that people do, and everyone is capable of it.

Another key takeaway from this story that people should reflect on is the selflessness that Dwynwen shows in dedicating her life to ensuring that all relationships of those truly in love are prosperous. Although she was not able to live out a life full of romantic love herself, she wanted to ensure that all those whose love was true were able to be together. This selflessness is a quality that we should strive to have in our relationships, as loving someone else is often seen as putting another person before yourself. To make sure that St Dwynwen’s sacrifice was not in vain, we should all aim to be selfless for those whom we love.

Cardiff is an excellent place for anyone wishing to celebrate love with the ones they hold dearest. One of the most popular ways for couples to celebrate is by gifting each other love spoons. These are carved wooden spoons that symbolise the unique love that a couple has for each other, for instance, featuring a lock or key in the carving often signifies that the love shared is a safe one and will be kept well. While it used to be the tradition to carve these spoons oneself, today it is more common for love spoons to be bought from shops such as Castle Welsh Crafts, found opposite Cardiff Castle.

By celebrating Dwynwen’s Day, not only are we ensuring that her memory lives on and that her sacrifice is appreciated by all who benefit from it, but we also work ourselves into her story, making hers a tale that spans centuries.

Daf James on breaking boundaries with lost boys and fairies

Daf James is a Welsh playwright, screenwriter, composer, and performer who recently gained acclaim for Lost Boys and Fairies, a three-part BBC drama he wrote and created. The series beautifully explores the joys and challenges of adoption through a diversity of voices.

In November 2024, Daf was named one of BAFTA’s Breakthrough Artists of the Year, a programme celebrating talented newcomers in film and television as selected by leading industry figures. “To have validation and that recognition feels like a bit of a pinch-me moment,” Daf shared in an interview with Cardiff Life Magazine.

Lost Boys and Fairies is a heartbreaking yet beautiful musical drama about Andy (Fra Fee) and Gabriel (Siôn Daniel Young), a gay couple embarking on the journey of adoption. Through this story, Daf delves into themes of identity while shedding light on marginalised communities. Drawing on his personal experience with adoption, he aimed to “authentically represent [these communities] on screen,” including the queer community, the adoption community, social services, and Welsh speakers. “Having gone through the life-changing process of adoption myself,” Daf explained, “I was able to write as authentically as possible, giving a platform to stories we may not usually see in the mainstream.”

The series doesn’t shy away from the complexities of trauma, as Daf reflects on the adoption process: “You have to look back at the way you were parented and what you’re bringing to the table.” His storytelling is deeply personal, particularly through the character of Gabriel. Daf also weaves in two perspectives

throughout the series, acknowledging how his children have transformed his view of the world. “It felt only natural to combine those perspectives,” he said. The layered, relatable characters are a testament to Daf’s emotional connection to the material and his commitment to authenticity.

Lost Boys and Fairies also challenges common stereotypes, particularly around social workers. “Social workers are often demonised in drama,” Daf noted, “but that wasn’t the full story in my experience.” The character of Jackie (Elizabeth Berrington), a compassionate and light-hearted social worker, serves as a parental guide. Daf celebrated “the extraordinary people on the front line doing amazing work in very, very difficult circumstances.”

Music is another integral part of Daf’s storytelling. As both a composer and playwright, he infused Lost Boys and Fairies with songs that hold deep personal meaning. The series’ theme song, composed by Daf, reflects a sense of escapism— for both the creator and the audience. Ultimately, the show carries a powerful message of inclusion, challenging binaries and promoting a more inclusive world.

Daf’s work consistently reflects his love for Wales. Growing up in Cardiff, he’s remained deeply connected to the city, returning to it repeatedly in both life and art. Lost Boys and Fairies beautifully showcases the city, portraying it authentically rather than using it as a stand-in for other locations. The series adds to the rich tapestry of television made in Cardiff while tackling hard-hitting themes with emotional resonance. Lost Boys and Fairies is a series that deserves to be celebrated—a poignant and powerful

the art of wintering

Have you ever found yourself feeling overwhelmed, completely exhausted and wanting to crawl back under your duvet for a month come this time of year? After all the hype of January’s New Year new me, start this, do that, goal setting, back to work, go go go messaging that bombards us come the turn of a new traditional year, it’s no wonder we can feel ourselves already unravelling come February.

The truth is, we’re just not built to function in a productive, busy, firing-on-all-cylinders way in the winter. The trees, plants and wildlife are resting and it’s an invitation for us to rest too. Here I share a softer approach to life this winter, to sustain and support you over the cold, dark months through the art of Wintering.

I’d describe Wintering as a gentle practice, surrendering to the elements and energy of winter through acts of self-care. Wintering is nature’s permission slip to slow right down, fill up our inner reserves and take time for deep rest. There is a season for everything, and winter is the home for surrender, reflection,

visioning and gentle preparation for the seasons to come. Let’s all take a collective exhale here and give one another the grace to just be for a while, before gathering to rise, rooted and well-rested in the spring.

How to: The Art of Wintering

Colour Your Days: Add a colourful blanket or photo frame to your living space. Play with dopamine dressing and adorn yourself with colour and clothes that evoke joy…you’ll give yourself and others around you a much-needed boost on a grey winter’s day!

Gentle Movement: Shake off the sensation of stagnation that can set in at this time of year with a juicy yoga or pilates class at home, or your local studio if you prefer some company as a nourishing way to start or end your day.

Savour Sleep: I cannot recommend this simplest of practices enough to you, especially at this time of year. Make the most of the darker evenings by going to bed earlier, reading a physical book (no screens!) or listening to a Yoga Nidra. Bonus points for rubbing

magnesium balm onto your feet or using a scented pillow spray before lights out for a sweet slumber.

Conscious Communication: Choose who you want to spend your time with as you Winter. You may have less energy, tolerance and resilience for being around too many people or those who drain you. This is ok. Seek out the radiators in your life. You know who they are, those people who give you a warm glow inside when you’re with them. Take the pressure off attending big social events and try socialising with ease instead. Wrap up warm to meet a friend for a takeaway coffee and a walk around the park or share a hearty feast by candlelight with loved ones at home.

Feed Yourself Well: Stay well and nourished using food as medicine, particularly in the winter. Warming is the way to go when Wintering. Prioritise eating foods that are in season and buy organic if you can. Stroll around the farmer’s market for inspiration or find a veg box delivery service near you to cook up a seasonal sensation. Get your recipe books out or look online for winter warmers like soups, casseroles and curries.

Take A Social Media Break: Go on, I dare you! Experiment with being more present and using your time differently. Find out who you are and what you love to do offline.

Creative Self-Expression: Play with reading, cooking, writing, painting, drawing, hiking, curating your home or making a collage or vision board for the year ahead.

Joy Of Journaling: Free-flowing, uncensored stream-of-consciousness writing, setting gentle intentions and reflecting are all wonderful ways to take care of your mind and body in winter. By getting our words out of our bodies and onto the page we discover our innermost hopes, desires and dreams. We can also unearth what’s been holding us back and keeping us stuck so that we can sit with it, process it and release it instead of carrying it with us into spring.

Stop And Rest: Do nothing, sit on your yoga mat and stare into space for five minutes. Look out the window at the clouds or lie down and take a nap with zero guilt or shame.

Bablu Shikdar SPREADING LOVE AND LAUGHTER

Over the last couple of years, Cardiffborn presenter Bablu Shikdar has been making waves in the media industry as a presenter, content creator and public speaker. The 24-year-old, who was born in Fairwater, credits a teacher in his school for his success.

“ I wasn’t the academic growing up, and I’ve always been a class clown,” Bablu told Cardiff Life Magazine. “I focused more on making the class laugh than my actual studies. It was my teacher who saw something in me and saw that I had potential and believed in me to pursue it.”

Bablu admitted that his passion for presenting comes from “connecting with people”. He explained: “I love making people laugh. I love listening to their stories, and the arts is a great way to kind of share those experiences.”

The young star’s big break came after university where he became an intern at ITV. During this time he said that he learned many “fundamental things” to pursue a career in the media. Bablu confessed, though, that work ‘in the newsroom’ was not for him.

“I just want to bring joy to people’s lives. My life motto is: Laugh, Learn and Inspire. Everything that I create, everything that I do, is in service of these mottos. After I finished ITV my internship, I realised that presenting is the route I want to go, particularly in entertainment and sports and things that I’m a bit more passionate about.”

❝ I love the fact that everyone says ‘sorry’ to each other. We’re the friendliest people on Earth! ❞ Bablu Shikdar

Following his time at ITV, Bablu has gone on to work for the likes of Radio Platfform, a youth-led scheme for people passionate about working in radio, It’s My Shout, BBC Horizons and Cardiff City. Reflecting on the start of his career, he said: “I love the fact that no matter what age, wherever you are, whatever background, I can start a conversation. I think it’s important for me to also share the different perspectives that I have and reach out to people.”

Speaking about how Cardiff has aided him, Bablu said: “After uni, I thought I had to move to London to make something of myself. I quickly realised that I didn’t have to because there were so many opportunities here. I also want to create something in Cardiff, I want to be a change-maker and a trailblazer. I want to showcase to other people that you can and it’s that whole saying of ‘you have to see it to believe it,’.

“I want my own TV show one day. I want to be able to help people and create a social impact through my work. It’s not just a job it’s a purpose for me.”

South Africa-born Clynton Marks, the owner of The Flamingos Group, has transformed Cardiff’s dining scene with a trio of restaurants— Café 19Thirteen, Flamingos@23, and Fenicotteri_13. His inspiration? Creating experiences that capture the spirit of the city, offering more than just delicious meals. “I wanted to establish spaces where people could not only enjoy exceptional food but also connect in welcoming settings,” Marks (pictured with his wife) told Cardiff Life Magazine.

The group’s ethos revolves around three core principles: fresh, locally sourced ingredients, seasonal and creative menus, and exceptional customer service. These values ensure every visit to one of their restaurants is not just a meal but a memorable experience. From Café 19Thirteen’s cosy charm to Flamingos@23’s eclectic vibe and Fenicotteri_13’s contemporary flair, each venue reflects the uniqueness of the communities they serve–with sites in the Lisvane and Whitchurch Road. Cardiff’s culinary landscape has seen a huge transformation over the years, evolving from traditional Welsh dishes to exotic global flavours. Marks highlights this evolution: “The rise of independent restaurants and street food vendors has added incredible diversity to the city. At Flamingos Group, we’re proud to offer gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian options to ensure everyone can enjoy our menus.” Their commitment to inclusivity extends

to minimising cross-contamination and prioritising allergy-friendly practices, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all diners.

Valentine’s Day at Flamingos Group is set to be marked by thoughtful touches and special menus. Each of the three restaurants transforms into a romantic escape with themed decorations, mood lighting, and special food offerings. “Our Valentine’s menu is designed to delight, with dishes highlighting seasonal ingredients and cocktails crafted just for the occasion,” Marks says. Whether guests are dining with partners or celebrating with friends, the Flamingos Group will ensure the day is both memorable and joyful.

Sustainability is a key priority for The Flamingos Group, with practices aimed at reducing their environmental footprint:

Locally Sourced Ingredients: Partnering with local farmers to support Cardiff’s economy and reduce food miles.

Waste Reduction: Creative use of ingredients, composting, and donating leftovers to minimise waste.

Eco-Friendly Practices: From energy-efficient appliances to water conservation, the group incorporates green initiatives across all operations.

ROMANCE AT FLAMINGOS

Community Engagement: Raising awareness about sustainability through events and collaborations.

Managing multiple successful restaurants is no small feat, and Marks credits much of the group’s success to its dedicated team. Flamingos Group prioritises hiring individuals who are passionate about food, adaptable, and eager to grow. “Our staff is our backbone,” he stresses. “We invest in their development, recognize their efforts, and create an environment where they feel valued.”

Though specific plans for 2025 remain under wraps, Marks hints at exciting possibilities: new menu innovations, themed events, and expanded sustainability initiatives. “Our goal is to continue offering unique dining experiences that resonate with Cardiff’s culture while surprising and delighting our guests,” he says.

BREWING LOVE: THE WORK OF GROUND FOR GOOD

with Dr. Rosie Oretti

Nestled in Penarth, a remarkable business is gently gathering a head of steam.

Grounds for Good, a sustainable enterprise founded by Dr Rosie Oretti, isn’t just about coffee— it’s about giving new life to wasted coffee grounds while cultivating a better world, one cuppa at a time.

Rosie, a dynamic entrepreneur and environmental advocate, launched Grounds for Good in 2021 with a clear mission: to transform spent coffee grounds into valuable products and thus reduce environmental waste. Today, the company is not only known for its innovative upcycling solutions but also for its commitment to sustainability and community engagement.

A Vision Rooted in Responsibility

“Coffee has always been more than just a drink to me,” says Rosie who attributes this to her Italian heritage. “It’s a connector, a catalyst for conversations and ideas. But I was truly shocked by how much waste the coffee industry generates. Estimates are up to half a million tonnes/year, in the UK alone. I wanted to create a business that tackled this issue head-on.”

Grounds for Good is the first, and only business, to establish a bespoke waste coffee grounds collection service from establishments across South Wales. With a touch of alchemy, they transform them into eco-friendly products such as London Dry gin, preserves, and natural firelighters. This circular approach not only reduces waste but also provides a sustainable and unique alternative to conventional products.

The company’s commitment doesn’t stop there. From carbon-neutral waste collections to using eco-friendly packaging, Grounds for Good integrates sustainability into every aspect of its operations.

Brewing a Community of Change

What sets Grounds for Good apart is its deeply ingrained sense of community. Rosies’ vision extends beyond upcycling coffee waste. “I wanted Grounds for Good to be a force for positive change,” she explains. “That means supporting local communities here in Wales while also addressing global environmental challenges.”

Through partnerships with local businesses, Grounds for Good has established a network that not only reduces waste but also raises awareness about sustainable practices whilst supporting the Welsh economy. A proportion of the company’s profits go towards supporting a national homelessness charity.

The Woman Behind the Grounds

Dr. Rosie Oretti’s journey to entrepreneurship is as inspiring as her business. She pursued a career in medicine and worked as a Consultant Psychiatrist within the Welsh NHS for 30 years before taking retirement. During this time, she managed numerous complex individuals where homelessness was a problem. For almost 4 years, she sat as a board trustee for the homelessness charity, The Wallich.

Drawing on her scientific expertise and enterprising spirit, Dr Oretti turned a kitchentable idea into a thriving enterprise that’s redefining waste management in Wales.

Challenges and Triumphs

Building a business, especially during a global pandemic, was no easy feat. Rosie admits that there were moments of doubt. “The logistics of collecting and processing waste coffee grounds during, and now even after, lockdown has been challenging. But adversity often sparks creativity. We adapted, learned, and emerged stronger.”

That resilience has paid off. Grounds for Good now boasts a loyal network of cafes and customers across Wales, with plans to expand its product line and reach. “We are always exploring new ways to repurpose coffee waste and looking at partnerships that can amplify our impact,” Dr Oretti reveals.

Grounds for the Future

Looking ahead, Rosie is optimistic. “Sustainability isn’t a trend; it’s a necessity,” she says. “I’m excited about the possibilities for Grounds for Good to lead by example and inspire others to adopt more circular approaches in their business”.

Her message to aspiring entrepreneurs? “Don’t be afraid to start small but always plan big. Every great business starts with a single step— or in our case, a single coffee!”

As Grounds for Good continues to grow, so does its impact. In the capable hands of Dr Rosie Oretti, this Welsh-born business is proving that doing good and doing business can, indeed, go hand in hand. For changemakers and eco-conscious individuals alike, Grounds for Good is more than a brand; it’s a movement—one that’s as resourceful and innovative as its founder.

CEFN MABLY

For Natasha Jones, love isn’t just about relationships – it’s a journey of selfdiscovery, transformation, and spiritual alignment. The psychic reader from South Wales has built a career helping others navigate life’s twists and turns. As Valentine’s Day approaches, Natasha shares her story and advice on love, heartbreak, and healing.

“My psychic journey began as a child,” Natasha told Cardiff Life Magazine. “But I buried my gifts for years, thinking they were a sign of instability. It wasn’t until my twenties that I reconnected with my abilities, with

the help of my Auntie Diane, who shares the same gift.” Their bond, forged through shared heartbreak and healing, became the foundation of Natasha’s journey. “We faced immense challenges but found strength in our pain. That light within the darkness has helped me guide others.”

When it comes to love, Natasha often hears familiar questions: When will I meet the one? And will my ex come back? Her answers are refreshingly honest. “If someone leaves your life, it’s usually because your soul contract with them has reached its conclusion. It’s time to embrace change and look forward to new

connections that align with who you are now.” While she occasionally sees reconciliation, Natasha stresses the importance of personal growth: “Divine timing plays a huge role. Focus on your healing and evolution while it unfolds.”

Natasha believes heartbreak isn’t the end – it’s an invitation for transformation. “Change is the heartbeat of life. Painful experiences are catalysts for soul growth. Perspective shifts heartbreak from loss to a powerful lesson, leading to a deeper sense of self.”

But how do we build lasting love? “True love starts within,” Natasha says. “Creating lasting love involves building a strong emotional connection through open communication, trust, and regular expressions of love and appreciation. By supporting each other’s growth, and individuality, and aligning your shared goals and values, you can foster a resilient and lasting bond. Embracing imperfections, forgiving each other, and being adaptable ensures that your love can stand the test of time.”

Living in the moment also strengthens relationships. “It’s great to plan for the future, but don’t overlook the small, everyday moments. Gratitude transforms the mundane into something magical.”

Through her readings, Natasha has witnessed extraordinary stories of connection, loss, and healing. One stands out: a grieving mother whose daughter’s spirit brought comfort and peace. “That reading showed me the incredible power of love – how it transcends even the physical realm.”

As Natasha’s journey proves, love in all its forms – romantic, familial, or self-love – is a force for healing and growth. Her advice this Valentine’s Day? “Embrace your path, trust the timing, and love yourself first. Everything else will follow.”
