A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Welcome to the third edition of Cardiff Business Life, and I suppose a hello is in order. I’m Sam and I’m the new editor of both Cardiff Life Magazine and Cardiff Business Life.

Over the last couple of years, I’ve seen firsthand the vital role the business sector plays in Wales. Businesses aren’t just about making money; they’re the lifeblood of our community. They provide jobs, support local charities, and contribute to our vibrant culture. It’s very exciting, therefore, for me to be able to help you navigate our city’s business landscape.

In this issue, we have the full list of winners from the AA Hospitality Awards. Discover who picked up gongs for Restaurant of the Year, Hotel of the Year and many other awards. We’ve also got the lowdown on the Wales STEM Awards 2024, which famously shines a light on the organisations and individuals making a difference to the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) agenda in Wales. Award season has only just begun though.

In November, the tenth annual Cardiff Business Awards are set to be held at the Mercure Holland House Hotel & Spa on Newport Road. Find out more about which businesses and individuals are nominated in this issue.

Elsewhere, we’ve got everything you need to know about the new steak restaurant that’s coming to the heart of the city centre. Having originated in Bristol, Mugshot Steakhouse looks set to rival the likes of Pasture and Gaucho — both of which have become fan favourites with locals.

Also, as we edge closer to Christmas, things start to get more and more stressful for many people — but we’re here to help. We’ve got all the top tips for staying well in the workplace. Research shows that when employers value their staff’s wellness and actively work to uplift it, there will be an increase in resilience, commitment and productivity.

And that’s only the beginning… Happy reading,

St David's 1

5 years ago St David’s opened its doors, forever changing Cardiff’s cityscape and shopping scene. This £675 million project brought nearly a million square feet of prime retail space to the heart of the city, occupying a significant portion of the centre. It wasn’t just about shopping; St David’s has propelled Cardiff to become one of the UK’s top shopping destinations.

The project regenerated the capital of Wales with a total of 1.4 million square feet of space, creating over 1,500 jobs. This wasn’t just a shopping centre; it became a vibrant community with over 300 apartments with rooftop gardens nestled above the bustling stores. The Grand Arcade, the heart of St David’s, is vast enough to house 29 double-decker buses. The project even included the construction of a new, award-winning library and a stunning public art scheme.

St David’s welcomed a staggering 1.3 million visitors in its first week, and 36 million in its first year, generating an average of over £1 million a day. It boasts 180 stores, attracting popular high-street retailers and coveted

designer brands. Many of these brands, like Kurt Geiger, Apple, All Saints, and Reiss, were entirely new to Wales. The anchor tenant, John Lewis, became Wales’ biggest department store and the brand’s largest outside of London.

St David’s continues to be a trendsetter. They introduced The Ivy restaurant and a flagship ZARA store to Wales, and the list keeps growing. Over the past year, restaurants like Giggling Squid and Gaucho made their Welsh debut alongside luxury beauty brand SpaceNK, the dynamic CO.LAB experiential retail space, and the recently opened homeware haven Sostrene Grene. Fashion brands Pull&Bear and Sosandar are also slated to join the ever-evolving lineup in the coming months.

St David’s owner Landsec is continuing to invest in Cardiff with plans underway for a new city square. The £17 million scheme includes plans for new play places for families with a water fountain splash pad and park, performance space with staging, landscaping and cycle parking spaces as well as two new restaurants and kiosks.

David's at 15

Landsec Futures, a £20 million social impact fund, has seen the firm work with Cardiff-based charities Ahead Partnership and SAFE Foundation to provide education programmes and skills development opportunities for people from disadvantaged backgrounds. St David’s has also supported more than 1,500 local people through its education and employment programmes, creating nearly £1 million of social value for the Cardiff community. It also supports under-represented groups in Cardiff, including Pride Cymru, and joins with the community for its annual Christmas Toy Appeal to donate thousands of gifts to vulnerable people and charities each year.

Helen Morgan started her career in retail 23 years ago at St David’s. After supporting the shopping centre’s opening in the role of marketing manager, Helen is now the Centre Director of St David’s, responsible for its daily management and operation. “With Cardiff as my home city, I visited St David’s every weekend growing up,” she said. “Over the years, St David’s has been a special place for my

career as well as for me and I’m passionate about its success. Even today, it’s a place where my family and friends come to shop – as well as myself – which drives me to see St David’s thrive and be a place Cardiff can be proud of.

“The launch of St David’s was an extraordinary achievement for Cardiff and the resulting transformation has been a pleasure to be part of. We’re also celebrating 80 years of Landsec this year, so it’s even more fitting to be reflecting on our history here in Cardiff and looking ahead to the future because while 15 years is a milestone worth marking, we never stand still. The centre has continued to evolve and improve over time as we continue to bring new brands and new experiences to guests and are always investing in the future whether that’s supporting local charities and the community to plans for the new city square which will unlock even more of Cardiff’s potential.”

The Wales STEM Awards 2024 took place last month and, in a ceremony celebrating outstanding achievements in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) in Wales, some of Cardiff’s businesses won big.

The awards are jointly organised by Grapevine Event Management and communications agency jamjar and are supported by Cardiff Metropolitan University, CSA Catapult, edx Medical, XMA Ltd, and Business News Wales. This year’s ceremony took place at the Mercure Holland House Hotel in Cardiff and provided an opportunity to recognise many of the outstanding contributions of individuals and organisations to the development of STEM in Wales. Among those commended during the evening were some trailblazing businesses right here in the heart of Cardiff.

Wales STEM Awards 2024

Wales Interactive, a Penarth-based video game developer, was given the STEM International Business of the Year award for its innovative approach to the gaming industry. Antiverse, Cardiff’s antibody design lab, won STEM Company of the Year (Under 50 Employees) for their groundbreaking work in AI-driven drug discovery. And, the University of South Wales was commended twice for both their project on sustainable silicon fertilisers and their research on rugby concussions.

Additionally, Andrea Meyrick — Head of Projects at Cardiff Bay’s science discovery centre, Techniquest – was highly commended in the STEM Woman of the Year category. The judges recognised her dedication to advancing STEM education and engagement within the local Cardiff community.

Although Wales STEM Awards have only been running since 2020, the ceremony has quickly cemented itself as a prestigious evening dedicated to recognising trailblazing individuals and organisations driving innovation across the country and making significant contributions to the sector. Thus, Cardiff’s success during the ceremony is a clear testament to the city’s cutting-edge approach to the world of STEM.

However, the Wales STEM Awards is not just about shining a spotlight on the remarkable work being done within the STEM sector. The evening is also an opportunity to address the many challenges facing the industry –from skills shortages to the need for greater diversity. These awards are an important step in inspiring the next generation of STEM professionals in Wales and ensuring that the future of this sector is secure.

Matthew Taylor, Director of Innovation at Cardiff Metropolitan University, headline sponsor of the awards, said: “We are thrilled to see the incredible achievements of this year’s winners and finalists at the Wales STEM Awards. Their dedication, creativity, and innovation are not only driving the STEM sector forward but also inspiring future generations. At Cardiff Met, we are proud to support such talent and to play a role in fostering a thriving STEM community in Wales. Congratulations to all those who are making a real impact in their fields.”

Additionally, co-founder of Wales STEM Awards, Liz Brookes, said: “It’s incredible to see the impact that our winners and finalists are having. They are not just excelling in their fields but are also paving the way for the future of STEM in Wales.”

Celebrities Gather for Grand Gala at Wales Millennium Centre

Last month saw a star-studded gala at Wales Millennium Centre to celebrate 20 years of firing the imaginations of people across the nation. Among the talents entertaining the audience of corporate supporters and the centre’s Partner Awen members were actor Michael Sheen –revisiting the building after treading the boards as the iconic Aneurin ‘Nye’ Bevan – as well as opera singer Bryn Terfel, and Eurovision and West End star Lucie Jones – all brilliantly compered by BBC radio DJ Huw Stephens. Award-winning chef Colin Gray ensured the culinary experience was as unforgettable as the performances, and a silent auction offered chances to spend the night under the building’s iconic inscription, and even lunch with Michael Sheen himself.

Wales Millennium Centre’s corporate partners help the iconic arts centre to transform lives through creativity across Wales. Among the projects made possible by corporate support is Plattform, the centre’s programme of opportunities for young people that helps them learn new skills, find their tribe and be creative for free. Radio Platfform – the centre’s youth-led radio station – recently picked up the silver award for Best Community Station at the ARIAS, and participants have gone on to work in the media industry – and even present on BBC Radio Wales.

Support from local businesses also helps enable their Croeso Tickets scheme, which welcomes people to see world-class shows on a pay-what-you-can basis through a network of community partners. Over 5000 people who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford a ticket

enjoyed hit musicals and dramas last year in specially allocated seats in the iconic Donald Gordon Theatre.

Corporate members also enjoy unforgettable opportunities to share the centre’s magic with their staff and clients, such as through early access to tickets for smash-hit West End shows and exclusive supporter events.

Local businesses have a real role to play as Wales Millennium Centre works to enrich lives through the power of the arts. If you are inspired for your business to join the family of valued partners and contribute to their vital mission, Wales Millennium Centre’s Development team are always happy to have a conversation with you. Popular steak restaurant takes over former Barocco site

Cardiff is set to sizzle with the opening of Mugshot Steakhouse, a renowned chain known for its exceptional steaks and vibrant atmosphere. The popular steakhouse, which has garnered a loyal following in other cities, is bringing its signature menu to the Welsh capital. The new restaurant will take over the former Barocco site in Morgan Quarter, which shut its doors in 2023.

Adam Bryan and Zowie Yip initially founded Mugshot Steakhouse in Bristol, UK. With a 1920s Prohibition-era American theme, the original venue features a criminal mugshot wall where diners can have their own Polaroid taken by a member of staff. In the new restaurant, diners can expect to indulge in a variety of mouthwatering cuts of beef, cooked to perfection and served alongside a selection of classic sides. Mugshot Steakhouse is known for its commitment to quality, using only the finest ingredients sourced from local and sustainable suppliers. Each steak is expertly seasoned and grilled to the customer’s preference.

Mugshot Steakhouse are known for their hot stone dining. The hot stones are brought to your table at a sizzling 350℃. Customers are encouraged to finish their steaks in small bitesize pieces as they eat so its easier to control the speed at which it cooks through. The steak’s flavoured butter infuses each bite with deliciousness and ensures each bite is as magical as the last. The hot stone also means your steak will be piping hot until the end of the meal.

In addition to its steaks, Mugshot Steakhouse also offers a diverse menu featuring appetisers, salads, and desserts

to complement the main course. Whether you’re craving a juicy burger, a flavourful seafood dish, or a decadent dessert, the restaurant will have something to satisfy every palate.

Much like its other venues in Bristol, the restaurant’s atmosphere is set to be designed to create a casual and enjoyable dining experience. With rustic decor, warm lighting, and friendly staff, Mugshot Steakhouse is encouraging Cardiffians to gather with friends and family for a memorable meal.

The city is already known to have a diverse range of steak restaurants, catering to various tastes and budgets. The last couple of years have seen the likes of Pasture and Gaucho become fan favourites for many people in the city.

Pasture was recently ranked 48th in the 101 World’s Best Steak Restaurants 2024. The World’s 101 Best Steak Restaurants awards are presented by London-based Upper Cut Media House and were first initiated by Ekkehard Knobelspies in 2019. The group have taken on the large task of compiling a list of the 101 best steak restaurants. Between 700 and 800 restaurants are visited and evaluated each year, from which the best restaurants are selected for the prestigious ranking.

36-year-old Chef-Owner Sam Elliot is behind Pasture’s growing portfolio of restaurants. Upon finding out Pasture’s positioning, he said: “To find out that we are now ranked 48th in the world at our Cardiff restaurant – having climbed 22 places last year – is amazing. I am incredibly proud of the whole Pasture team and all of their hard work.

FOR Cardiff Executive Director

Carolyn Brownell on The Future of Retail in Cardiff

Photos: FOR Cardiff, Tome Damsell

The future of the high street is a topic close to people’s hearts and sadly, people can be negative about where they live, having become used to what their home can offer them and only seeing what it is lacking as a knee-jerk reaction. There’s lots to be excited about in Cardiff and with some huge changes and investments coming soon, there is a lot of jealousy from cities across the bridge with what we have to offer!

Iconic Department Stores Taking on New Lives

Cardiff knows how to repurpose a department store. You need look no further than how David Morgan’s was transformed into the beautiful Morgan Quarter. Plans for the redevelopment of Howells are some of the most exciting reimaginings of a department store anywhere in the UK, notably with the reappearance of Bethany Chapel and the opening of new public space. Speaking of public space over at the former Debenhams site, exciting plans are progressing for the City Square park – more greenspace and time for play is an important part of the future of the high street. This kind of innovation is rarely seen in city centres and demonstrates Cardiff’s commitment to making the city centre somewhere people can come and really experience their place.

Independent Retail is on the Rise

Research from the Local Data Company shows growing numbers of independent businesses compared to national chains. It is a nationwide trend that is replicated in Cardiff. Identical high streets are giving way to unique local identities supported by people’s favourite national brands. FOR Cardiff has been celebrating the things that make Cardiff unique through our City of Arcades brand since 2018 and we are excited to see what comes next for this growing sector and would encourage everyone to attend City of Arcades Day on November 16 for a day of offers, entertainment and events. Follow our channels for more information.

The Mixed-Use High Street of THE Future

Our town and city centres are about much more than shopping. The number of people living in central Cardiff is soaring and more people living in the city means around-theclock activity. We’re also seeing more varied uses of business premises, from the rise in competitive socialising (places like Flight Club and Roxy Lanes) to new co-working spaces as we move to hybrid working, to the exciting appearance of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in the Old Library. The things we do in city centres are always developing.

The Cardiff of the future won’t look like the Cardiff of the past but that’s always true – we’re looking forward to what the future brings and how we can help shape it.

Cardiff to Welcome New Store

Skechers, the American leisure and sports footwear giant, has selected Cardiff as the first UK location for its new store format. The company has leased a vacant unit on Newport Road, which is set to open in June next year and will span 14,000 square feet. This move is part of a nationwide expansion, with plans to secure additional sites across the UK for its standalone stores.

Sterling Real Estate IM and EJ Hales advised the unnamed private investor and developer landlord on the lease, while CBRE represented Skechers. The unit was previously home to Newport Furnishers.

Details regarding the lease length and rental terms have yet to be disclosed. In preparation for the opening, the building is undergoing extensive remodeling and refurbishment, including new glazing, cladding, entrance features, and improved access to the first floor.

Founded in 1992 by Robert Greenberg, Skechers initially produced casual and athletic footwear for men. The brand’s popularity surged in the 1990s with the introduction of its Bobs line of women’s casual footwear. The shoes became a hit, appealing to women seeking both comfort and fashion.

As the brand continued to grow, Skechers expanded its product line to include athletic footwear, children’s shoes, and even performance footwear for walking and running. Today, Skechers is a global brand with a presence in countries all over the world.

Cardiff's Nightlife Set for a Boost with Barbara's Bier Haus and Bonnie Rogues

Two of Cardiff’s popular bars have rebranded, unveiling fresh names and identities. Heidi’s on Mill Lane is now Barbara’s Bier Haus and Proud Mary Pub on St Mary’s Street has been transformed into Bonnie Rogues Pub. The transition was seamless, ensuring no disruption for customers.

NEOS is bringing a fresh approach to the city’s entertainment scene, combining great food, drinks, and dynamic environments for people of all ages. “We have the winning formula to create seriously good fun spaces for people to eat, drink, dance, play, and watch sports,” a NEOS spokesperson shared, highlighting the company’s confidence in the success of these new venues.

Barbara’s Bier Haus offers a Bavarian beer hall experience in the heart of Cardiff, featuring long communal tables and an extensive selection of German beers served in traditional steins. The venue will be filled with lively entertainment, including live music and sports screenings, making it an ideal destination for group outings or after-work socials.

Meanwhile, Bonnie Rogues will introduce a modern twist on the classic Scottish pub. With a welcoming, laid-back vibe, it promises a great mix of pub favourites, live entertainment, and a comfortable space for casual evenings or weekend parties.

Both venues aim to be more than just places to drink. Barbara’s Bier Haus and Bonnie Rogues will offer engaging atmospheres designed for socialising, making them key additions to Cardiff’s thriving nightlife.

As Cardiff continues to grow as a nightlife hub, these new additions are set to make a significant impact. Whether you’re in the mood for the lively Bavarian spirit or a laid-back Scottish pub experience, these venues promise something for everyone. The investment by NEOS underscores a commitment to enhancing Cardiff’s social scene with spaces that are all about having fun, whether it’s eating, drinking, dancing, or simply enjoying a night out.

A New Jewel in Cardiff's Historic Coal Exchange: Aura

Cardiff’s Coal Exchange, a building steeped in history and once a bustling hub of global commerce, has witnessed a transformation that celebrates both its heritage and the modern era.

Built in the 1880s, the Coal Exchange played a pivotal role in the global coal trade, setting prices for the valuable commodity and hosting the world’s first-ever £1 million deal. Today, the building stands as a testament to Cardiff’s industrial past, while its latest chapter as a luxury hotel and dining destination ensures that its legacy lives on.

The recent opening of Aura, a luxurious brasserie and bar located within the historic Coal Exchange Hotel, marks a significant addition to the city’s dining scene. Since welcoming its first guests in October, Aura has brought a unique experience to Cardiff, combining contemporary sophistication with the rich history of one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

A Seamless Launch with Veezu Partnership

As part of Aura’s grand opening, a partnership with Veezu, one of the UK’s largest private hire companies, was established to ensure guests enjoyed a seamless experience. This collaboration made it easy for diners to travel to and from the venue, offering convenience and enhancing Aura’s commitment to delivering exceptional service from start to finish.

A Heritage-Infused Dining Experience

Aura’s menu showcases modern twists on classic dishes, with a focus on refined flavours and high-quality ingredients. Standout plates include perfectly grilled Poussin with a zesty lemon and thyme marinade, sharing côte de boeuf that melts in your mouth and delicate house salads. A carefully curated cocktail and wine list complement each meal, offering the perfect pairing for every palate.

Sophie Pascoe of Studio Severn, the creative mind behind Aura’s interior design, has crafted an environment that harmonises with the building’s historical essence. “With an abundance of historical charm and nods to the building’s heritage, Aura inserts itself with a simple contemporary luxe, adding elegant refinement in contrast to the exposed raw industrial features,” she explains.

The space features striking design elements such as Rosso marble, polished plaster, handmade tiles and dark bronze architectural hardware. These details add a touch of glamour to the raw beauty of the Coal Exchange, creating a stylish yet relaxed atmosphere.

Aura's Alluring Ambiance

Flair Interiors, known for their sophisticated approach, have brought Aura’s spaces to life with a refined palette and impeccable craftsmanship. Every detail, from the lighting to the furnishings, has been carefully considered to offer guests an immersive and memorable experience.

Aura provides a variety of dining settings to suit any occasion. The main restaurant and bar offer a casual yet refined atmosphere, perfect for lunch or dinner, while the private dining room is an intimate option for special celebrations. The semiprivate dining area, enclosed by elegant wine cabinetry, offers a more secluded experience for those seeking privacy amidst the restaurant’s vibrant ambience.

Keith Clash, General Manager of The Coal Exchange Hotel, expressed his excitement about Aura’s opening. “Crafted and brought to life by our expert team, Aura aims to provide an unforgettable experience, where innovative cuisine meets a warm and captivating atmosphere. We look forward to welcoming you to Aura and sharing this exciting new chapter with you,” Clash remarked.

A New Chapter for Cardiff's Dining Scene

Aura’s arrival marks an exciting moment for Cardiff’s culinary landscape. By blending the rich history of the Coal Exchange with a modern, luxurious dining experience, Aura has quickly become a destination for those seeking sophisticated cuisine that honours Cardiff’s past while embracing the future of modern gastronomy.

Whether you’re indulging in a refined dinner or savouring a drink at the bar, Aura promises to leave a lasting impression on both your palate and your appreciation for Cardiff’s historical and cultural legacy.

In a project that signals a bold new chapter for one of Wales’ most iconic 19th-century buildings, the historic 20 Park Place in Cardiff is set to become the city’s newest premier destination for food, events and cocktail culture. This ambitious restoration project will bring new life to a Grade 1 listed building, a feat of both historical importance and modern ingenuity.

Welsh small businesses have received £ 50m in funding since 2012

Start Up Loans, a wholly owned subsidiary of the British Business Bank is celebrating providing over £50m in funding to small businesses across Wales since the programme launched.

Start Up Loans provide government-backed funds of up to £25,000 per individual, and up to a maximum of £100,000 per business. What’s more, they don’t just offer financial help. Successful loan applicants can also receive free mentoring, access to resources, and advice under the initiative. Since the programme launched in 2012, it has distributed almost 5,000 loans to Welsh small businesses.

Swansea has received the most loans from the programme, with 587 loans from the local authority. The city also holds the

title for the highest value of loans from the programme, with over £6m invested into small businesses in the area. However, Cardiff is a close second, having received over £5.8m in start-up loans. Third is Newport, with £3m in funding help.

In total, the British Business Bank’s initiative has distributed 4,876 loans to businesses across Wales, 37% of which have gone to female business owners. Plus, they have also released an Essential Guide to Starting a Business, designed to help firsttime business owners navigate their journey with confidence.

The help on offer for Welsh businesses through this programme is invaluable for the success of small businesses. Independent businesses play a vital role in any economy, and the British Business Bank’s commitment to helping them thrive deserves celebration.

Louise McCoy, Commercial Managing Director at the British Business Bank, said:

“Start-Up Loans is proud to have provided £50 million worth of funding to founders across Wales since 2012. We hope that aspiring business owners in Wales are inspired by the stories of successful businesses that have launched with the support of a Start Up Loan and get in touch with us at the start of their business journey.”

Plus, Gareth Thomas, Services, Small Business and Exports Minister, added: “This £50 million milestone is an important one for businesses right across Wales. We know that access to finance has become a significant problem for many small businesses,” he says, “which is why we’re committed to working with the British Business Bank to support SMEs as much as possible, wherever they are in the country.”

Proposals to double the economy in South Wales and the West of England have been unveiled. The Western Gateway, a cross-border alliance of 28 local authorities from Swansea to Swindon, states that its newly launched Plan for Sustainable Development could enhance the UK economy by £250 billion by 2050. The plan was introduced at a convention in Newport and focuses on improving rail connectivity, investing in nuclear energy, and establishing a hydrogen ‘supercluster.’

It also urges the UK and Welsh governments to collaborate with the Western Gateway on these initiatives, which have garnered support from numerous prominent academics, business leaders, and ministers. Notable endorsements include Rebecca Evans, Welsh cabinet secretary for the economy, and Dame Nia Griffiths, parliamentary under-secretary of state for Wales.

Sarah Williams-Gardener, chair of the Western Gateway, said: “This plan powerfully demonstrates that the Western Gateway is ready to help provide the solutions to support the Prime Minister’s national mission. Supported by business and our local authorities, this plan demonstrates the art of the possible and offers the UK and Welsh Government tangible opportunities to partner with our area to deliver growth for our communities.

“Our plan is promoting grassroots solutions which can help unblock routes to new investment, support our innovative economy and better connect communities who are at risk of being left behind.”

Recent independent research highlights that the Western Gateway could emerge as the fastest-growing region outside of London over the next five years. The study also revealed

that businesses in the area typically miss out on between £3-9 million in private sector investment each year compared to other regions in the UK.

Cllr Huw Thomas, leader of Cardiff Council and vice-chair of the Western Gateway, added: “We know we have huge potential working together as the fastest growing economic area outside of London. Based on evidence, this plan demonstrates that we as a region are ready to be partners with governments in both England and Wales to provide the solutions to deliver for our economy.”

Plans to double the size of South Wales economy announced

Economic expansion forecast for Cardiff

The gross value added (GVA) in Cardiff is set to increase by 1.3% this year and 2.07% in 2025, found professional service network PwC. This estimation places Cardiff as the city with the biggest rise in this key economic measure anywhere in the UK, outside of London. In comparison, London’s predicted growth is sitting at 1.47%.

PwC’s research assessed 53 UK cities and towns, including Glasgow, Manchester, Belfast, Edinburgh, Leeds and Bristol. Yet, out of all of these places, Cardiff ranked highest for its high growth expectations.

Swansea performed well too, with PwC ranking the Welsh city in 7th place for its predicted GVA – 1.17% this year and 1.78% in 2025. These findings place Swansea around the average point of all assessed areas.

The research was published in PwC’s annual Good Growth for Cities Index. The index considers all elements of economic growth and wellbeing, including jobs, income, health, skills,

and work-life balance, alongside the core measures of GDP/ GVA. With this in mind, the overall index for 2024 is led by Plymouth, with Cardiff ranking at 13th place.

John-Paul Barker, regional market Lead for PwC in the West of England and Wales, said: “This year’s index identifies a clear reason for leaders in Cardiff and Swansea to be optimistic: the areas of the economy in which we are most active are enjoying periods of growth, and we’re due to experience economic growth significantly faster than the UK average.” However, he also made clear that there is still room for improvement.

“Ensuring that economic growth is sustainable and inclusive - and translating it into the sort of ‘good growth’ our report articulates - will depend on the expertise and collaboration of our devolved and local leaders,” says John-Paul. This is something that Wales is well-positioned to work on, leaving us hopeful for the future of our economic growth.

CCR accredited as a Real Living Wage employer

The Cardiff Capital Region (CCR) has officially been accredited as a Real Living Wage employer by the Living Wage Foundation.

CCR is a regional body which consists of the 10 councils across South East Wales. With 1.5 million residents in the region, CCR has always been committed to improving quality of life through investments in areas such as jobs, transport, homes and communities. However, this dedication has now been formally recognised as the CCR were named a Real Living Wage employer in September 2024.

Real Living Wage employers are recognised for their devotion to areas like fair pay, equal opportunity and economic growth. In Wales, a tenth of workers earn less than they need. So,

CCR’s new status is a step in the right direction to ensure that Welsh citizens can live comfortably.

“Fair economic opportunity is central to CCR’s ambitions to foster good growth across our Region,” says Kellie Beirne, CCR’s Chief Executive. “Our accreditation as a real Living Wage employer formally recognises our long-standing commitment to ensuring fair wages within our organisation, a milestone that sets the standard for businesses across our Region.”

CCR’s “long-standing commitment” to fair pay can be seen through its work with councils and national parks across Wales, and through its tenancy in Cardiff University’s sbark|spark building. This building is Wales’ first Living Wage building, meaning that all tenants are required to pay employees and contractors the full Living Wage.

Leader of Cardiff Council, Councillor Huw Thomas, said: “I am pleased that Cardiff Capital Region has gained the real Living Wage Accreditation… as Chair of the Cardiff Real Living Wage Steering Group and Action Team, I’m an advocate for fair wages, which keep money within our local economy. I’m glad to see further progress being made to strengthen the commitment to fair pay across the City Region.”

This was furthered by Katherine Chapman, Director of the Living Wage Foundation, who is “delighted” that CCR has been accredited. She said: “CCR has joined the movement of over 14,000 responsible employers across the UK who voluntarily commit to go further than the government minimum to make sure all their staff earn enough to live on.”

“They join thousands of businesses that recognise that paying the real Living Wage is the mark of a responsible employer,” she continued, “and they, like CCR, believe that a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay.”

Free finance advice on offer for Welsh SMEs

In a bid to support Welsh small and medium-sized enterprises, Business Wales is inviting SMEs across the country to attend online finance and tax advice workshops.

Business Wales is the Welsh Government’s support service for micro-businesses and SMEs. With government-backed funding, their latest series of workshops – titled ‘Managing Your Finance and Tax’ –will take place on November 21 and December 10. The sessions will be free to attend.

Welsh SMEs are crucial for the economy. In fact, according to the Welsh Government, SMEs made up 99.3% of the total enterprises in Wales last year, of which there were an estimated 248,000.

However, despite the clear need for these enterprises, there is no denying that many people struggle to handle some of the aspects that come with running a business. With this in mind, the workshops will seek to alleviate these feelings by offering insight and advice to SME owners, with a specific focus on the financial side of running a business.

The sessions have been designed specifically with Welsh businesses in mind. Attendees will learn about topics such as tax and national insurance calculations, bookkeeping, profit and loss accounts, and cash-flow statements. The workshops should give SME owners a newfound sense of confidence and understanding about the financial side of their business.

To secure your spot at the ‘Managing Your Finance and Tax’ workshops, email startup@businesswales.org, or call 01656 868500.

Meet The Welsh Brand Revolutionising Home Services

The home services market is changing for the better thanks to one innovative business, founded right here in the heart of Wales. Introducing WarmZilla: a disruptor brand bringing a user-friendly, flexible, and instantaneous approach to home services, all without the need for human interaction.

Founded by Matthew Powell, WarmZilla officially launched in 2019 after a gap in the market was spotted. “I originally ran my own Gas Engineer business, working within the traditional model of the industry. But over time, I realised that the HVAC (heating, venting, and air conditioning) world felt outdated,” said Matthew. “It was like it was locked behind technical expertise, making it less accessible for everyday people,” he continued, “so that’s where the idea for WarmZilla came from –to simplify the process.”

In a bid to take the hassle out of home services, Matthew’s vision was clear. He wanted the industry to be approachable for everyone – and not just in terms of the buying experience. He said: “I also noticed that the industry lacked personality, and I wanted WarmZilla to stand out from that cold image. Enter Derek, our friendly orange dinosaur! He adds an approachable vibe to the brand.”

Complete with a fun mascot and customer-first service tactics, the WarmZilla team were well on their way to changing the face of the HVAC world.

WarmZilla offers boiler installations, boiler repairs, plumbing, heating, EV chargers, and smart home solutions. Customers have 24/7 access to services, with installations available within 48 hours. What’s more – all this can be done without the need for human interaction, taking away the minefield of jargon that is typically associated with this industry. Plus, Matthew says the no-human interaction approach “streamlines the customer experience while providing flexibility for those who need it.”

It might sound daunting, but the experience is simple in practice. Customers complete an online survey about their home service needs. Based on these responses, the WarmZilla system generates tailored packages to suit the customer’s needs and budget. Then, customers can select their preferred package and checkout, paying in full or opting for a finance option to spread the cost. Within 48 hours, a trusted professional will complete the installation. Plus, once you’ve purchased your package, WarmZilla will always be on hand for aftercare essentials. “It’s not just about making the purchase easy – it’s about being there for our customers long after the sale, and that’s something I’m proud of,” beams Matthew.

“The process is designed for minimal human interaction,” says Matthew, “but assistance is still readily available for those who seek reassurance or advice before making a purchase.” The website features a live chat function and offers callback services and enquiry forms so that consumers aren’t left completely in the dark. He added: “This approach ensures that customers enjoy a seamless and efficient purchasing experience while still having access to support when they need it.

Since its launch five years ago, WarmZilla has gone from strength to strength. Their services are now available across the UK, their team has grown, they’ve extended their offerings, and Derek has even had a few TV appearances. Now, moving into 2025, WarmZilla has its sights set high to keep up with the ever-changing nature of the industry.

“The UK home services market is set for significant growth, and technology will be at the heart of that transformation,” predicts Matthew. “I see more customers demanding online convenience, and WarmZilla’s use of tech to simplify the boiler-buying process is just one example of how the industry is moving toward more efficient, customer-centric solutions.”

Funding secured to boost Cardiff's music scene

Cardiff Council have recently announced that new funding will be available to support grassroots music venues across the capital.

The Grassroots Venue Fund is supported by the UK government and will give some of Cardiff’s most iconic independent music venues a chance to keep building business.

All grassroots music venues in Cardiff will be eligible for the fund, which is expected to offer capital grants of up to £10,000 towards venue improvements. This development is part of the council’s Cardiff Music City programme – an initiative that has been in place for seven years since the Welsh capital was named the UK’s first Music City in 2017.

Cardiff was first recognised as a Music City for its commitment to live music and creativity. The prevalence of live music is vital for boosting the city’s nighttime economy and securing its international profile. The Music City strategy has been working to uphold Cardiff’s status as a creativity hub while protecting the iconic music scene that exists at the heart of this.

Cardiff Council’s work under the Cardiff Music City programme has already demonstrated its commitment to helping independent music venues thrive. The various funding initiatives put in place over the years, and the introduction of the three-week-long Cardiff Music City festival this October, have cemented the Welsh capital as

a supportive and positive space for musicians and grassroots venue owners to experiment, attract an audience, and continue to create booming creative businesses.

This new funding announcement continues the hard work that has already gone into enhancing Cardiff’s music scene. What’s more, it’s a vital step in the right direction to ensure that the future of grassroots music in the capital is secure and viable for years to come.

In regards to this new funding initiative, Council Leader and Chair of Cardiff Music Board, Cllr Huw Thomas, said: “Cardiff’s grassroots venues play a vital role in the city’s music scene. They provide important opportunities for local artists to develop and build audiences, act as a focal point for communities, and help make Cardiff the vibrant, exciting place that we know and love.”

“The support offered by this fund, alongside the other work being delivered through our music strategy - including the new Cardiff Music City Festival, our support for the redevelopment of Clŵb Ifor Bach, the help we gave to Porters and Sustainable Studios when they needed to find new homes, and our new Little Gigs talent development scheme - all aims to help ensure they can overcome the challenges facing venues across the UK and continue to thrive at the heart of Cardiff’s music scene.”

Welcome to Arth

Black, bold and beautiful, the newest addition to South Wales’ functional fitness scene is a female-run boutique gym in the heart of Penarth, Arth.

With a mantra based on community and togetherness which is splashed across their rustic brick walls, co-owners, former international rugby player, Laura Payne and world-renowned harpist, Hannah Stone are changing the definition of macho gyms from their new home on Glebe Street just off Plassey Street.

Arth, with its dark walls and monochrome theming throughout, should feel like a pain cave, but this little bolthole of health and wellness already has a thriving, warm community of like-minded folk exercising to be their best selves, and that’s at the heart of Payne and Stone’s ethos.

The two local mums originally met at the school gates and have gone on to train and compete together in CrossFit and Hyrox events, their aim through the new business is the get people moving more, enjoying exercising and learning what their bodies are capable of.

Payne who previously ran Atlantic Crossfit in Sully and then a thriving personal training and bootcamp business in the town has brought many of her old clients across to the new space.

“I’m so passionate about offering strength classes to people” the former Wales scrum-half, Payne told us.“Providing the community with boot camps for the last few years has been great, but not somewhere we’ve been able to practice lifting weights! It’s been amazing to see how even long-term clients are realising just how strong they already are.”

The health and fitness scene in London is awash with luxury brands like Barry’s, 1Rebel and Third Space, South Wales has been left behind in this phenomenon until now. Stone is delighted to be able to provide the town with a taste of that through Arth.

“Whilst some people are content with a gym set up where they get in and get out, we’re confident we’re offering something more. Growth and progress for one, but also an environment where people feel part of something,” said Stone.“We also have that higher-end feel, and why shouldn’t people want to treat themselves if it’s somewhere we’re encouraging them to come every day!”

The gym works off a class-based approach with a 7-day timetable providing a mixture of sweat, strength and stretch sessions. They also offer a menopause lifting class, courtesy of trainer Cara Lovett.

Renishaw is an official partner of Hoci Cymru, as well as the official partner of the Glamorgan Valleys team within the County Pathway, a key facet of talent identification and player progression for Welsh hockey.

There are eight county teams in Wales, selected from over 600 children from all local authorities across Wales, and each year the County Championships prove to be a showcase of excellent talent across the nation.

County teams face off against each other to be crowned national champions and will do so once again in February 2025. The county teams represent the beginning of Hoci Cymru’s talent discovery phase, with young players having the potential to subsequently be selected for our National Age Grade sides.

As part of their partnership with Renishaw, Hoci Cymru’s U18 players will have the opportunity to Step into STEM and visit the Renishaw manufacturing site in Miskin, South Wales, to discover more about the industry and explore potential career options. Renishaw is a specialist in engineering technology.

The company creates high-precision products that are used by companies around the world in the manufacture of accurate components and assemblies for

a wide range of industries. These include consumer electronics, semiconductor chips, jet engines, electric vehicles, dentistry and medical applications. It is a world leader in systems for metal 3D printing. The company has 67 key locations in 36 countries with over 5,000 employees worldwide, around 3,000 of those in the UK, including 700 at its site to the West of Cardiff.

Joe Gage, Hoci Cymru Director of Development and Participation, stated: “We are delighted to have extended our existing relationship and partnership with Renishaw for a further two years. We are thrilled to have their continued support in a key area of our talent identification and look forward to seeing young players in the County Pathway continue to thrive and progress through to our national sides. An important part of this collaboration is also the exposure to an exciting and growing industry for our young athletes, for whom it’s vital to gain experience in working environments and broaden horizons.”

Chris Pockett, Head of Communications at Renishaw, commented: We’re excited to continue our partnership with Hoci Cymru and further advance our shared aims of motivating and inspiring young people to fulfil their potential. The partnership is a fantastic opportunity to work with a like-minded organisation that will help us increase our reach into communities in South Wales, where we are continuing to make significant long-term investments in our operations.”

Consultation Begins on New Cardiff Parking Plan

Aconsultation on a new parking plan for Cardiff has launched. Cardiff Council says the proposal – to move towards a new area-based approach to managing parking across the city – would give residents a better chance to park on their street, or adjoining roads close to their homes – while reducing opportunities for commuter parking.

Cllr Dan De’Ath, Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning, Climate Change and Transport and former Lord Mayor of Cardiff, said: “The new parking plan for Cardiff intends to give residents, blue badge holders, cycle and car clubs and local businesses better access to on-street permit parking.

The online survey is split into five sections covering the five proposed areas, allowing the public to answer specific questions about the area that they live or work in, or if they prefer, they can answer the entire questionnaire.

“The consultation will run until December 1 2024 so we want as many people as possible to participate in the survey, so we can understand people’s priorities and deliver a scheme that is fit for our capital city.”

Under the new proposed scheme, all on-street parking bounded within the areas south of the A48, west of River Rhymney, north of Cardiff Bay and east of the River Ely and the outer wards would be split into four distinct parking management areas with different restrictions in place for each. These are the City Centre, Inner, Cardiff Bay & Outer Parking Management Areas. Each area will be made up of several parking zones.

The council said the proposals would bring Cardiff into line with most major cities in the UK. Subject to the results of the consultation, they will take several years to implement, as separate Traffic Regulation Orders will be required for each parking zone.

Cllr De’Ath continued: “Parking across the city has increasingly become an issue for many residents who are finding it harder and harder to park outside or near their own homes due to high numbers of commuter traffic. This ability for commuters to come and park in the city for free is leading to air pollution and congestion which our residents are suffering from.

“We’ve always been clear that if we are to clean up the city’s air and tackle the climate emergency then we need to reduce our reliance on the private car and get people to think more about taking public transport.

“We believe that changing the way we enable people to park across the city, making the system easier to understand so motorists know where they can or cannot park, will help to alleviate these problems and will encourage more people to think about using public transport which is better for the environment.

The proposed new Parking Management Areas

City Centre Parking Management Area

Will cover the city centre including the centre of Cardiff and the Civic Centre. All on-street parking will be managed 24 hours a day, seven days per week all year and no waiting will be allowed at all. Loading will only be permitted during certain hours to ensure businesses can re-stock. No one can apply for a permit in this Parking Management Area. Taxi ranks, loading bays and disabled parking bays will be unaffected.

The Inner Parking Management Area

Includes parts of Adamsdown, Butetown, Cathays, Grangetown, and Plasnewydd that are next to the City Centre Area. All on-street parking will be managed from 8 am until 10 pm and only resident, visitor, community and carer permits can be applied for. Outside of taxi ranks and deliveries, all on-street parking spaces will be managed via restrictions and pay & display between 8 am and 10 pm.

Cardiff Bay Parking Management Area

Includes all of Butetown south of Callaghan Square. All on-street parking in the Cardiff Bay Parking Management Area will be managed from 8 am until 8 pm and only resident, visitor, community and carer permits can be applied for. Outside of taxi ranks and deliveries, all on-street parking spaces will be managed via restrictions and pay & display between 8 am and 8 pm.

The Outer Parking Management Area

Includes Canton, Gabalfa, Penylan and Splott, and the parts of Adamsdown, Cathays, Grangetown and Plasnewydd that are not next to the city centre. All on-street parking will be managed from 8 am until 6 pm and only resident, visitor, business, carer and school permits can be applied for. Outside of taxi ranks and deliveries all on-street parking spaces will be managed via restrictions and pay & display between 8 am and 6 pm.

“As we continue to improve cycling and walking routes, the competition for space on Cardiff’s road network has increased and as it is impossible to create more on-street parking space due to the physical restraints, changes need to be made. So, what we are proposing here is a complete overhaul of the on-street parking policy by creating a ‘zonal approach’ within Parking Management Areas so we can better manage and enforce the car parking spaces available so that the system isn’t abused.”

Anew advanced technology centre from Cardiff and Vale College has been given the go-ahead. Due to the opening at Cardiff Airport, this £65m project will be located alongside the existing International Centre for Aerospace Training.

The centre will focus on inspiring and teaching future generations. It will run full-time courses to give students a way into the advanced technology industry, as well as apprenticeships and part-time courses to allow both employees and employers the opportunity to enhance their workforce. Additionally, through collaborative programmes with university partners, higher education courses will also be on offer at the campus.

Many of the courses on offer will focus on supporting economic development, enhancing skills, and meeting the demands of the advanced technologies and green skills industry. Once open, the campus will be able to accommodate around 2,000 students and 100 staff.

The 130,000 sq ft project has recently been approved by Vale of Glamorgan Council. Construction work is due to begin next year, subject to the Welsh Government’s approval of the full business case. If all goes to plan, the new campus is expected to open in 2026.

This development comes as part of a £100m investment into two new campuses. The other campus is located in Barry and

Tech Learning Campus coming to Cardiff Airport

has secured planning consent for a £35m revamp. This new waterfront learning centre will replace the college’s ageing campus at Barry on Colcot Road and is scheduled to open toward the end of 2026.

When reflecting on what these plans mean for the future of Cardiff’s employers, Mike James – Group Chief Executive of Cardiff and Vale College – told Business Wales: “It is with real pleasure that I can say that we are delivering on our commitment to provide first-class teaching and learning environments for learners and the community in the Vale of Glamorgan.”

“We are delighted that the Vale of Glamorgan has approved of the next stage of our investment in education and training in the region,” he continued, “this advanced technology centre will also cater to the current and future needs of employers across the Vale and the wider Capital Region.” Photos: wepco.co.uk

Cardiff University reopen voluntary redundancy scheme

Cardiff University has announced that it will reopen its voluntary redundancy scheme in November to try to address its £30m deficit. Just two months after closing it, the plan is due to restart.

Like many universities in Wales and across the UK, Cardiff University has seen a fall in its intake of international postgraduate students paying high tuition fees. This decline comes after the UK Conservative Government decides to end visas for family members of overseas students – a policy that the new UK Labour Government does not intend to reverse.

This has had catastrophic implications for Wales’ only Russell Group university.

Following this fall in intake, Cardiff University is facing financial challenges that could worsen in the aftermath of the 2024 Budget. As such, the university has decided to reopen its voluntary redundancy scheme despite only announcing its closure in September.

A voluntary redundancy scheme involves employers asking employees to suggest themselves for redundancy. The terms must be fair: employees can negotiate their own terms, and employers must have a transparent selection process when considering the volunteers. However, there is always a risk that this scheme could cost the university some of its most valued academics.

This scheme is part of an on-going effort from the university to reduce their deficit. Other measures being discussed include dropping grade requirements to boost enrolment numbers, and potential shared services across several Welsh universities.

Although the voluntary redundancy scheme is not new, it is still a worry for existing staff. The anxieties surrounding the concept of redundancy have been heightened following the Vice Chancellor’s update to staff, in which she stated that compulsory redundancies cannot be ruled out.

The Vice-Chancellor, Wendy Larner, also said: “Cardiff is one of many universities adopting measures to mitigate financial pressures. We are facing a £30m operating deficit for the 2023/24 financial year. Had we not taken action mid-year, that deficit would have been far worse.

“While we are not in immediate financial difficulty – our reserves will cushion us in the short term – we cannot continue to use these reserves to cover operating costs. In short, we need to return to the point where our costs are lower than our income, and we are trying to do so within a broken funding system.”

£ 300 million inv to drive innovat across South W

estment vehicle ion and growth ales

Cardiff University and other SETsquared Partnership universities and leading regional investment firm QantX have announced plans for a new spinoutfocused investment vehicle to catalyze the creation and growth of science and technology companies.

This new investment vehicle will drive a much-needed step change in early-stage patient capital, expertise, and support available to university spinouts and start-up companies in the region that are working in areas of true global impact –such as sustainability, clean energy, and transformative healthcare.

Cardiff has been a member of the SETsquared partnership since 2021 and has collaborated with them since 2018 as part of the Research England and HEFCW-funded Scale-Up Programme. The SETsquared Partnership of six universities - Bath, Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter, Southampton, and Surrey - has a research portfolio of over £600 million and has produced over 230 spinout companies through collaboration across vibrant regional innovation ecosystems. Despite this success, the potential impact of R&D to power regional growth and productivity is being held back due to significant imbalances in equity funding across the UK. Startups in the region raise, on average, five times less at early stages than in the Golden Triangle.

As demonstrated by successful models elsewhere in the UK and internationally, this new vehicle will open significant co-investment opportunities, de-risk early-

stage deep tech propositions for the VC and Angel investment community, and increase the overall amount of capital available.

QantX is on a mission to bring modern economic success to the region by increasing the number of spinouts, protecting intellectual property, and creating long-term impact. They have a track record of backing the most ambitious science and technology founders - including award-winning teams at Senisca, Ensilitech, iFAST Diagnostics, and Neuronostics - and developing connections across university innovation ecosystems.

SETsquared is widely recognized as one of the UK’s most successful innovation partnerships and was recently ranked by the Financial Times and Sifted as one of the top three start-up hubs in Europe. The partnership brings the pipeline and track record from working with over 400 ventures per year in critical technologies such as AI, engineering, biology, semiconductors, and quantum, with members securing over £5 billion in investment and creating over 15,000 jobs since 2002.

The initiative was announced by Sir Richard Olver, Chair of QantX, at Bristol City Hall on 11 October at the Regional Investment and Health & Life Sciences Summit, with Science Minister Lord Patrick Vallance and MP Darren Jones in attendance.

Science Minister, Lord Patrick Vallance said: “The UK is home to brilliant innovators, and this investment vehicle that brings together six universities with a private sector investment firm, QantX, will help turn great ideas into thriving companies that create high-skilled jobs and exciting new products.

“As we prepare for the UK-hosted International Investment Summit, the Government is clear that the UK is open for business. Partnerships like this, between investors and innovators, are vital if we are to grow the economy, boost opportunities, and ultimately improve lives.”

Professor Roger Whitaker, Pro ViceChancellor for Research, Innovation, and Enterprise at Cardiff University said: “We are delighted by the development of this new investment vehicle. It will play a critical role in accelerating the commercialization of our research and innovation, supporting delivery of breakthrough ideas to the market, and shaping the industries of the future.”

Richard Haycock, Co-Founder and CEO of QantX explains: “While the UK ranks fourth globally in cutting-edge research and innovation, we’ve often struggled to commercialise these breakthroughs. Our partnership with the SETsquared Universities aims to change this in South and Southwest England, and South Wales. We’re witnessing a surge in university spinouts led by brilliant founder entrepreneurs.

“By connecting these visionaries with risk capital and expertise in transformative fields like life sciences, sustainability, and deep tech, we’re cultivating a thriving innovation ecosystem. This collaboration will accelerate economic growth, create high-skilled jobs, and deliver returns for our investors. We’re not just funding companies; we’re empowering local entrepreneurs to transform our region into a powerhouse of innovation, ensuring the fruits of our world-leading research flourish right here at home.”

Plans for new Cardiff arena confirmed

Anew 15,000-capacity indoor arena is set to take the Welsh capital by storm in 2027, following the recent signing of development and funding agreements.

This new arena has been in the making for quite some time. But – with contracts now officially exchanged between Cardiff Council, the global entertainment operator Live Nation, its partner Oak View Group, and development partner Robertson Property – we can start to get excited about what this means for the future of Cardiff’s music scene.

Back in September 2021, the Welsh Cabinet delivered their decision on the full business case and delivery agreement of the arena, and the consortium of Live Nation and Oak View Group were appointed as operators of the project. Originally, construction was supposed to begin in 2022 with the new arena planning to open its doors at the end of 2024. However, a few setbacks occurred along the way.

Leader of Cardiff Council Huw Thomas addressed this delay, explaining to WalesOnline: “The project did need to adjust following significant changes in the economic market conditions following the pandemic.” However, Huw says he is now “delighted” that this issue has been resolved. Now that legal agreements have been signed and contracts have been exchanged, the preparation works and construction can begin.

The new arena plays a vital role in plans to transform Cardiff Bay’s Atlantic Wharf. It’s a project due to cost £250m. However, Live Nation has agreed to make a £100m financial contribution towards the project. Live Nation is a US firm that manages music acts, venues and ticket sales across the globe. And, this new arena is not their first foray into the Welsh music scene.

Cardiff’s existing arena, The Utilita Arena (formerly known as Cardiff International Arena, and The Motorpoint Arena), is also a Live Nation venue. The iconic 7,500-capacity venue on Mary Ann Street first opened in 1993, and has since seen some of the greatest musicians, comedians and sportspeople take to its stage. Yet, it is expected that The Utilita Arena will close its doors for good once the new arena is up and running. If the site is demolished, it could open up opportunities for further commercial development in Cardiff’s Canal Quarter.

Alongside the plans to open a new arena, the transformation of Atlantic Wharf will also bring 1,000 new homes, hotels, offices, and entertainment venues to the area. Complete with a public square, the plans also include a light rail extension from Cardiff Central Station to a new Metro station at Pierhead Street. This would provide an overdue transport boost for access to the arena and the wider Atlantic Wharf development.

While many of the plans for Cardiff Bay’s revamp are in the early stages, construction on the new arena is due to begin very soon. Now that contracts have been signed and exchanged, Live Nation needs to finalise the plans with its contractor supply chain. Then, work will start in 2025, with the arena expected to open in the second half of 2027.

Russell Goodway, Cardiff Council cabinet member for investment and development told WalesOnline: “Delivering a new indoor arena has been an ambition for successive council administrations for over 30 years. The signing of this legal agreement by the council, Robertson and Cardiff Arena Operations Ltd marks an important milestone in realising this project. We want Cardiff Bay to be one of the leading visitor destinations in Great Britain and this is a step towards making that a reality.”

“The arena will significantly increase the number of people visiting Cardiff for events and concerts,” added Councillor Huw Thomas. This will benefit existing hospitality venues as well as the new developments that will be built as part of this regeneration scheme. Huw said: “The increased footfall will also complement the new Metro transport extension to Cardiff Bay, as well as improving Cardiff’s credentials to attract more and bigger events to the city.”

How to stay well in the workplace

Back in September, Hospitality Action – one of the UK’s leading hospitality charities – partnered up with the Walk for Wellbeing fundraising initiative to create a guide for hospitality businesses in Cardiff. This comes after the charity discovered that 76% of hospitality workers struggle with mental health challenges.

By partnering up with Walk for Wellbeing – an annual event which promotes taking small steps to support individuals and their families in the hospitality sector who are facing challenging times – Hospitality Action are hoping that their guide will educate employers and make a difference to employees.

The Step-by-Step guide aims to provide employers with strategies to improve the mental health of their employees. Complete with solutions like counselling, employee-checkins, and wellbeing practices, this initiative advocates for the introduction of more wellbeing-focused workplaces and stresses the importance of fostering a positive work-life balance.

Stress Awareness Week takes place this November, providing an important opportunity to reflect on the stress-related challenges that many people face in their daily lives. It’s a time to openly discuss how we’re feeling and explore ways to improve mental health and wellbeing. However, this conversation shouldn’t be limited to just one week. Now, more than ever, is the perfect time to continue raising awareness about stress and mental wellbeing, and consider how they impact all areas of our lives.

Prioritising and improving your mental wellbeing will look different for everyone, but it is something to be considered in all areas of your life – especially in the workplace. In fact research shows that, when employers value their staff’s wellness and actively work to uplift it, there will be an increase in resilience, commitment and productivity. The importance of enhancing employee wellbeing has recently been underscored by various campaigns and guides taking Cardiff’s workforce by storm. So, we’re rounding up some of the city’s leading champions in the fight for wellness in the workplace.

Active Soles Movement

around, take the stairs instead of the lift, and stand up and stretch during meetings. They will feel more comfortable, healthier and happier every day - which can also lead to less sickness and a more productive workforce,” Rhys explains.

Alongside initiatives like the hospitality wellbeing guide, many campaigns across Cardiff are also working tirelessly to change the culture of working environments in the city. The Active Soles Movement is doing just this through promoting the message that comfort is key when it comes to improved mental health for employees.

The Active Soles Movement first launched in Manchester before making its way to Wales thanks to representatives from Cardiff Metropolitan University, Public Health Wales and Vale of Glamorgan Sports and Play. “Active Soles looks to change the culture of workplaces by allowing employees to wear comfortable shoes so that they can move in more easily,” explains Digital Media and Marketing lead Rhys Russell. “What we wear changes the way we think and behave,” he adds, “and wearing comfortable shoes means we are more likely to build movement into our day, filling workplaces with energy and motion.”

At its core, this movement is about encouraging employees to stay energised and active in their working day. “People working in offices are spending up to 75% of their working hours sitting,” says Rhys – and research shows that a lack of activity can be bad news for your mental health. So, rather than setting a daily distance target to get people moving, Active Soles simply encourages people to start wearing comfortable footwear to work. “When people wear comfortable shoes, they’re more likely to get up and walk

When Active Soles came to Wales, Cardiff Metropolitan University, Actif North Wales, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, Cardiff Council and Vale of Glamorgan Council were the first organisations to get involved in the movement. After representatives spent time strategising together, the initiative was successfully scaled to the Welsh capital and has been having a positive impact on people’s mental wellbeing ever since.

For instance – when Assistant Director for Improvement, Implementation and Spread at Cardiff and Vale UHB, Ruth Jordan, made the decision to start wearing trainers to work she noticed “a massive difference” to her wellbeing.

“I’m a physiotherapist by background, so I was used to being on my feet all day, every day walking thousands of steps.

Then I suddenly got another job which meant I was deskbound,” she explained. “I felt grumpy, lethargic and put on too much weight. It was terrible. But being given permission to wear trainers to work has made such a difference to getting up and about.”

Not only this, but Ruth has noticed a difference in her working environment since the introduction of comfortable shoes.

“We’re now having walking meetings, and a lot of our oneto-ones are on the go,” Ruth said, making for a happier and healthier working day.

Hugh James' Wellness Masterclasses

Another example of a business committed to the welfare of its employees is Hugh James, Wales’ leading full-service law firm. The firm recently announced its collaboration with The Breathe Clinic to bring wellness masterclasses straight to the office. Aimed at improving both physical and mental health of employees, this masterclass is part of Hugh James’ ongoing commitment to investing in mental health support and improved wellbeing.

The Breathe Clinic is a mobile approach to workplace wellness, run by expert Chris Flynn. Focused on cultivating healthy, happy and productive employees, their sessions focus on the pillars of positive mental health. Chris and The Breathe Clinic team visited Hugh James back in October and delivered a session focused on sleep, breathwork and optimising focus and attention. “We’re happy to be supporting Hugh James in their dedication to employee health,” said Chris, “it’s admirable the firm recognises the importance of supporting staff with the tools and information they need to thrive in work and at home.”

October’s workshops were a triumph, with many employees coming away feeling supported and motivated. In fact, following the success of the sessions in Cardiff, Hugh James has committed to introducing The Breathe Clinic to their London and Manchester offices too. When reflecting on this,

Diane Brooks – HR Director at Hugh James – feels “proud” to have partnered with The Breathe Clinic. She said: “At Hugh James, the wellbeing of our colleagues is a top priority, and these sessions helped provide our colleagues with practical strategies for enhancing their health and happiness both at work and in their personal lives.”

The decision to partner up with The Breathe Clinic is just a small part of the firm’s wider Hugh James Potential programme, which is committed to supporting employees as they fulfil their potential both professionally and personally. The firm understands that in order to do this, wellness is key. As such, they have a range of other support systems in place to help employees thrive.

For instance, the firm has trained mental health first aiders across all offices, and has set up internal networks to give employees a safe space to share their experiences and receive support. They’ve also started initiatives such as Walking Wednesdays, intended to encourage employees to take time out from their desks to reconnect with colleagues. All of these steps, plus their ongoing partnership with The Breathe Clinic, cements Hugh James as a business leading in the prioritisation of workplace wellbeing.

Cardiff Granted the Gold Sustainable Food Places Award

The city of Cardiff has been granted a Gold Sustainable Food Places Award. This coveted status recognises the success of the city’s approach to building a sustainable and healthy food system. Joining Brighton & Hove, Cambridge, and Bristol, Cardiff has become only the 4th city in the UK to achieve this recognition.

Back in 2021, the Welsh capital was given the Silver Sustainable Food Places Award. Off the back of this, Food Cardiff – a city-wide partnership of individuals and organisations, co-founded by Cardiff & Vale Public Health Team and Cardiff Council – worked tirelessly to help the city achieve the respected Gold status.

To do this, Food Cardiff set up the Cardiff Good Food Strategy, which outlined five clear goals: a healthy Cardiff; an environmentally sustainable Cardiff; a thriving local economy; a fair and connected food system; and an empowering food movement. And now, the city has finally been recognised for its contributions to creating a connected, sustainable and prosperous food system.

Reflecting on the success of their strategy, Pearl Costello, Food Cardiff coordinator, said: “This is a huge achievement for all of the many individuals, community groups, organisations and businesses who are part of the Food Cardiff network, and everyone in the city who has contributed to our Good Food movement. It’s great to have this external recognition of our success at a UK level. And to show the power of bringing together all of the people within the food system to collaborate for change.”

Established in 2013, the Sustainable Food Places program is led by three national food charities – Soil Association, Food Matters, and Sustain – and funded through the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and The National Lottery Community Fund. It aims to make healthy and sustainable food a key feature of where people live. And, the Sustainable Food Places Award Scheme highlights the locations that are excelling in this.

The Award Scheme is based on the idea that collaboration and connectivity are key for driving health and sustainability. So, it judges areas based on six key factors; including food governance and strategy, catering and procurement, healthy food for all, and sustainable food economy. If a location shines in each category, it will be in with a chance to gain the prestigious Gold status. Leon Ballin, Sustainable Food Places Programme Manager and one of the judges for the Gold award said: “It’s only places that have been doing the sort of work that Food Cardiff has been doing for at least a decade that can achieve a gold award.”

“What particularly stands out in Cardiff is that there is a really strong, grassroots, good food movement here, where people are getting involved and the communities are well represented,” Leon added, “and there is superb buy-in from the local authority and health board. It’s pretty remarkable.”

Cardiff’s newfound status as one of 4 Gold Sustainable Food Places in the UK cements its position as a force for change, and it’s something we all should feel proud of.

Cardiff Housing Association Appoints Exciting New Role

ACardiff-based housing and support provider has appointed a new tenant engagement officer to lead the implementation of the organisation’s vision to provide affordable, comfortable and energy-efficient homes for all its tenants. Zana Ali’s appointment comes as part of Taff Housing’s broader strategy to provide affordable warmth to all its tenants, in line with the Welsh Government’s latest heat strategy and its commitment to decarbonising 1.4 million social homes across Wales.

Zana’s role is just one part of a new project team at Taff Housing who are dedicated to improving the energy efficiency of all 1500 homes owned and managed by the housing and support provider. Zana will be working closely with the Taff Housing Development team alongside the Assets team, to individually assess every home, considering the structure and age of the building, suitability of technology and the tenants themselves, to ensure that appropriate energy efficiency measures are planned for each home.

Zana will also be tasked with the role of informing, guiding and supporting tenants through the changes being made to their homes to ensure they understand the positive impact these updates will have both financially and physically. He said of his new role: “Many of our tenants are living in fuel poverty and most of which also reside in low energy efficient homes; therefore, it is hugely important to be addressing this issue to help people manage fuel costs. However, before we can embark on making any changes, we must ensure that our tenants are fully on board with the changes we are suggesting to their homes. They must understand the long-term benefits any improvements we are planning will bring, such as reduced energy bills and enhanced living comfort.”

Since starting his role Zana has been dedicated to engaging with tenants, helping them to understand the benefits and processes of the decarbonisation initiatives. His work includes providing clear information about energy efficiency upgrades, such as the installation of solar panels, heat pumps, and other green technologies while ensuring minimal disruption during these upgrades. He also ensures that tenants understand how the new technologies work, so they can fully benefit from the new systems.

CEO of Taff Housing, Helen White added; “Like many other housing associations we are dedicated to improving the energy efficiency of our tenants’ homes to help them to manage their fuel costs. Without funding from the Optimised Retrofit programme from the Welsh Government, this would be very challenging to achieve. However, we are now putting plans in place to implement the roll-out of our ‘affordable warmth’ strategy, carefully considering the needs of every tenant and their home. This rollout will take several years to complete, but with our dedicated team in place, we are confident we can achieve this in line with the Welsh Government’s ambitious plans.”

Wales-based Taff Housing owns and manages over 1500 homes across Cardiff, providing 4000 people with somewhere to call home. The housing association also deliver a range of specialist support, including young people and familysupported accommodation, community-based floating support and specialist community relocation schemes.

It also offers tenants financial support and money advice and tenancy support services in the community where they help people to access education, training, and employment, as well as physical and mental health services to help prevent the threat of homelessness. Life Sciences Hub Wales’ annual report has revealed that over 50,000 Welsh patients have benefited from their innovations to the health and social care sector.

As an arm’s length body of the Welsh Government, Life Sciences Hub Wales seeks to lead the transformation of health and social care across the country. Through impactful solutions and dynamic responses, they drive progress in the health and social sector while striving to make the latest life science developments useful in everyday frontline scenarios.

Since their formation in 2013, Life Sciences Hub Wales have gone from “strength to strength,” says Jeremy Miles, MS Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care. He continued: “they ensure that innovation is at the heart of health and social care, working closely with industry and health and care professionals.” And this approach has changed the lives of countless people.

For instance, their Community Pharmacy System Innovation Fund is working to modernise pharmacies across Wales, with efficient systems, enhanced prescription safety and reduced administrative stress. Additionally, their QuicDNA Project has revolutionised lung cancer diagnostics by utilising liquid biopsy technology to cut treatment times. Projects like QuicDNA demonstrates “outstanding leadership through a truly collaborative project between the NHS, third sector and industry,” says Sian Morgan, Consultant Clinical Scientist & Laboratory Director at All Wales Medical Genomics Service. Award-winning communications agency the Orchard Media and Events Group is officially owned by its team after the company set up an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT).

Orchard, which is based in Cardiff, is now in the hands of its 64-strong team in a move which aims to protect the future independence of the £15 million turnover company. With the founders moving on, the ownership of the business has been transferred to Orchard’s staff, with an employee-owned trust now owning and managing the company, the latest Welsh business to take this increasingly popular corporate route.

Charlotte Fairs, Director of People and Culture at Orchard said: “As of today, every member of the team is part of a trust that owns Orchard. As trustees, every single one of us is empowered and has a vested interest in making a success of working with our clients in a mutually beneficial way. The reaction of the team has been tremendous, there’s a great community spirit here, and we’re all excited at what the future holds for us.”

Orchard has been providing a range of creative communications services to clients in Wales and across the world for 14 years, from the Welsh Government to Principality Building Society, Aston Martin and Qatar Airways to Nando’s, the AA and Netflix. The agency creates corporate and public events for NATO, UEFA, and Johnson & Johnson; produces film content for Visit Wales, TV programmes for BBC, S4C, Channel 4, and National Geographic; and advises on sponsorships and partnerships for the likes of the RFU, the International Chamber of Commerce, and Orbex.

EOTs are becoming an increasing popular way to keep corporate ownership within the country of origin, in this case Wales, to secure jobs and provide more opportunities for talent to build their careers here. There has also been a recent restructuring in the senior leadership team at Orchard, with Jim Carpenter and Kerry McDonald taking the reins as Co-Chief Executives and Phil Morgan joining as Chief Finance and Operating Officer.

Jim said: “The Orchard founders Al Wilson, Matt Wordley and Pablo Janczur, built great foundations for the company, and we’ve achieved so much in a short time. Now the EOT model will repay the hard work and commitment of the team here and give us all the opportunity to drive our strategic direction. The ethos behind EOTs aligns well with the values we’ve nurtured in the company, and this team are the people best placed to benefit from its future success.”

The EOT was achieved with the specialist knowledge and support of Andrew Evans

Cardiff Communications Agency Now Employee-Owned

at Geldards, and Paul Cantrill, a Corporate Advisor with Cwmpas, Azets and Specialist Accounting Solutions. Andrew Evans, a Cardiff Partner with Geldards LLP is hugely experienced in taking companies through EOT across the UK.

Andrew said: “Geldards is delighted to be trusted with advising on the transition of Orchard to employee ownership. The shareholders, management team and employees have been very receptive to the idea of employee ownership and a desire to adopt “best practice” in terms of employee engagement to make the transition a success and the basis for future growth in the business.”

The EOT transfers ownership of the company to a trust. Current shareholders will be

reimbursed in line with an agreed payment schedule, A proportion of future incremental profits will be available for distribution to trustees in line with the trust’s oversight. There is no cost or liability for individual workers, but instead, a great incentive to ensure the business continues to thrive.

The Welsh Government is looking to double the number of businesses in Wales that are employee-owned by 2026 (from 2022) and supports the Employee Ownership Wales service at the development agency Cwmpas to ensure Wales-based companies remain in Welsh hands.

Back in September, the Social Media Conference Cymru held its second annual event, bringing social media and marketing mavens together under Swansea Arena’s roof. Despite only running for two years, the conference is always a highly anticipated day dedicated to inspiring and supporting the creative communications and digital sectors in Wales.

Last year, the Social Media Conference Cymru was delivered right here in the heart of Cardiff, transforming The Principality Stadium into a hub of creativity with over 280 social media and marketing professionals in attendance.

This year was bigger and better, as over 330 people spent the day in Swansea to soak up all that Wales’ only social media conference has to offer. Couldn’t make it? Don’t worry – read on for our recap of the day’s events.

Swansea Arena opened its doors bright and early on September 26 2024, welcoming this year’s audience in for the social media conference. The day kicked off at 9 am with a registration and breakfast, providing fuel for the day ahead. Then, after a welcome talk at 9:40 am, the panels began.

The first three sessions of the day navigated everything from engaging your audience to the secrets behind South Wales Police’s successful social strategy. After a short tea and coffee break at 11:15 am, the next round of panellists took to the stage. These talks considered how to achieve accessible social media communication, marketing on a budget, and keeping the audience interested. Plus, a breakout room on the truth behind forging a career in the digital age stimulated insightful discussions.

Social Media Conference Cymru 2024

After an hour’s lunch break at 1 pm, the afternoon events were in full swing. Covering everything from AI and the print industry, to the Guinness World Records and influencer partnerships, there was no stone left unturned by the day’s end at 5 pm. Speakers at the conference navigated their respective topics with confidence and knowledge, using their personal industry experience to inspire and educate future generations.

Organisers of the conference, Elan Iâl and Alun Jones, say that they spotted a gap in the market for an industry event dedicated to uniting professionals in the social media and digital marketing field. The creative sector in Wales is thriving, and the Social Media Conference Cymru provides an opportunity for creators to learn from each other and build connections in an uplifting environment.
