Michael Sheen is bringing his bold vision for Welsh arts to life with the launch of a new national theatre company. If the thought of treadmills and protein shakes leaves you cold, you’re not alone. More people than ever are turning to the outdoors to rediscover what movement should feel like: freeing, fun and deeply connected to the world around us. One of the standout figures embodying this shift is Kris Roach, founder of SupHikeExplore, a one man mission to show that fitness doesn’t have to mean fluorescent lighting and off-peak gym times.
What started as a personal challenge has grown into a compelling vision for outdoor adventure. “I just wanted to see if I could combine my love of paddleboarding and exploring”, Kris tells me, dangling his legs into the River Taff. “It’s not about PBs or ego here, it’s about the experience, about being completely immersed in your surroundings.”
And immersed we are, currently sitting on our boards looking at Castell Coch while a flock of starlings fly around us on an early Sunday morning. Kris has climbed and paddled some of the most iconic peaks and lakes in the UK, from Pen-y-Fan, Cader Idris and Yr Wyddfa, to Helvellyn and Ben Nevis. But this isn’t just a checklist of conquests. For Kris, each journey is about presence, solitude, and a touch of madness. “Carrying an inflatable paddleboard up a mountain isn’t what most people would call fun,” he laughs. “But the moment you launch it onto a silent lake, with nothing but the sky above you and the summit behind you, it’s magic”.
Trying paddleboarding for the first time with Kris feels like an exercise in trust, not just in the board, but in your own ability to slow down. He talks you through the basics with an easy calmness, then encourages you to stand, to breathe, and to just... be.
“The beauty of SUP is that it’s accessible,” Kris explains. “With the right gear, like a PFD (personal flotation device), a correct leash for your conditions, and a phone in a waterproof case - you’re already setting yourself up for a safer and more enjoyable experience.” Planning is just as important. “Always check the weather, wind conditions, and your route before heading out,” he adds. Some spots may require a license or insurance to paddle, and organisations like Paddle
UK or Paddle Cymru can help clarify what’s needed and where you can access the water. It’s worth noting that multiple paddleboarders have needed rescue recently, a reminder that nature deserves respect. “It’s not about making it complicated,” Kris says. “It’s about making sure you have the right knowledge, so you can enjoy the adventure with confidence.”
And that’s the secret sauce. SUP (stand-up paddleboarding) is less about high-octane cardio and more about balance, strength, and peace. It’s part sport, part meditation. And in a world that rarely stops moving, that’s what makes it revolutionary.
The rise in popularity of paddleboarding isn’t just a lockdown fad. As people re-evaluate their relationship with exercise and escape, SUP is ticking all the right boxes: it’s low impact, naturebased, and surprisingly social. “You can take it seriously and push your limits, or you can just float and chat with friends,” Kris says. “There’s no wrong way to do it.”
His regular escapes, the still waters of Cardiff Bay, hidden coastal inlets along the South Wales coast, and the glacial tarns of the Brecon Beacons, offer a variety of landscapes that make each outing unique. “You don’t need to book a flight or break the bank to find adventure,” he reminds me. “Wales is wild and beautiful. We just need to look at it differently.”
For Kris and a growing number of outdoor fitness advocates, the message is clear: you don’t have to punish your body to feel strong. You don’t have to plug in your headphones to tune out. The best workouts might just come with muddy boots, wind-burnt cheeks, and water at your feet. So the next time you’re dreading the gym grind, maybe consider an alternative. Maybe climb a hill. Maybe bring a board. Maybe meet someone like Kris, who reminds us that the best way to find fitness, is to lose ourselves in nature.
Follow Kris’ adventures at @suphikeexplore.co.uk on Instagram. Ready to try it yourself? Book onto one of his one-to-one sessions, guided trips or group meet ups at suphikeexplore.co.uk
When Lauren fi rst laced up her walking boots, it wasn’t for the likes. It was for the feeling, the rush of reaching a summit, the tang of salt on a coastal path, the hush of a waterfall hidden in the Welsh hills.
Through her Instagram page @walkingwithlauren, she now brings over 40,000 followers along for the journey, turning everyday walks into extraordinary escapes across South Wales.
Her path into hiking didn’t begin with a grand plan, just local strolls with her dog, Indie. Those simple walks soon became longer adventures, each one drawing her deeper into Wales’ natural beauty. As her love for
the outdoors grew, so did her desire to share it.
Today, she’s a proud Wales Coast Path Ambassador, promoting mindful, respectful travel. Her followers know: if Lauren recommends a trail, she’s walked it. Muddy boots, Indie in tow, not just a quick search.
South Wales became the backdrop to her quiet transformation. Her feed doesn’t feel curated; it feels real. Muddy boots, wild hair, and the joy of being fully present.
Her journey is a reminder: the best adventures aren’t always planned. They leave you windblown, laughing, and a little in awe of this wild corner of the world.
Need a trail, some stillness, or encouragement? Look no further than Walking with Lauren. You might just find your next favourite place.

If a route looks sketchy, slippery, or too steep - it’s absolutely okay to turn back. Safety first, always.
If a trail is too busy or a car park is full, don’t force it. Move on to Plan B and come back another time.
Check access, parking, and route info before you go. A little prep can make a big difference to your day.
Think practical: sturdy shoes, layers, and weatherappropriate gear. The right outfit makes for a safer, more comfortable hike.

Founded in 2024 by Sam, a passionate advocate for sustainable style and community-driven design, Circular is a revolution against fast fashion. From the outside, it might look like a typical industrial unit, but inside you’ll find curated rails of vintage and Y2K fashion, DIY sewing stations, and a warm, inclusive energy. Every item has been saved from landfill, with over 10,000 garments diverted since the project began.
At the heart of The Circular Studio’s mission are its signature events: Second-Hand Saturday and Fill-ABag Sunday. Held regularly throughout the month, they give locals the chance to declutter and refresh their wardrobes affordably and sustainably. For just £3, shoppers can access Second-Hand Saturday, trade clean, wearable clothing for in-store credit, and browse a constantly changing selection. Fill-A-Bag Sunday is just as popular: pay £5, grab a bag, and fill it with as much as you can carry.
But The Circular Studio isn’t only about shopping. It’s also a space for skill-sharing and creativity. Sam runs sewing sessions and workshops that empower people to repair, upcycle, and reimagine their clothing, helping reduce waste and build a deeper connection with what we wear.
The clothes are far from second-rate. From designer gems to festival wear, office-core, streetwear, and sizeinclusive picks, every piece reflects the Studio’s ethos: expressive fashion that doesn’t cost the earth. Vintage and Y2K styles such as cropped cami tops, baggy jeans, and reworked denim are staples on the rails.
Sam’s founding goal was simple: to build a space that celebrates creativity, circular fashion, and inclusivity. That vision is now a vibrant reality. With over 10,000 followers, regular sold-out events, and a growing presence in South Wales’ indie fashion scene, The Circular Studio proves that small spaces can spark big change.

On a quiet street in Penarth, something special is cooking, and it smells like smoke, spice, and a whole lot of soul. What started as a bit of fun, feeding friends from a homemade smoker after fixing up the house for his wedding, has grown into a full-blown food venture for Matt Obrien. Think fine dining meets fire school, with a bit of DIY charm and a dash of global flavour.
Matt, a former musician and self-taught pitmaster, is now serving up smoked meats, charred sides, and bold
BBQ mashups that draw on everything from Argentinian Asado to Korean classics.
“I didn’t really get into food until university,” Matt says, laughing. “I quickly realised no one was going to cook for me. So I started with the classic cheap ramen noodles.” But when his housemates discovered he was the least-worst cook among them, things took a turn. “They paid for the food shop, and I cooked. Then came the requests. It was a win-win. I got to learn, eat for free, and experiment.”
Growing up in Grangetown before moving to Penarth in secondary school, food wasn’t a huge part of his life. The journey from student cook to smoke show entrepreneur was far from planned. “It was accidental!” Matt explains. “We’d just done the house up to get married in and had a quick chat about what to do with the space. A few mates said, ‘You should sell this BBQ,’ so I registered the house as a business in November 2023 and opened on the 16th of December.”
What started as a casual monthly pop-up quickly snowballed. “I thought I’d maybe sell 15 trays. But the first three months sold out in three days.” Since then, the BBQ Chop Shop has exploded into something much more ambitious: fine dining events, a Fire School,
collabs with indie brands, pop-up takeovers, and now, a YouTube channel and upcoming cookbook.
Matt’s BBQ style is anything but ordinary. Drawing inspiration from global fire cultures, his approach is shaped by the Argentine Asado method, cooking with open flames and treating smoke like an ingredient and not a by-product. Those techniques have made their way into his events, where he uses high-quality charcoal for ‘live smoking’, a dramatic showstopper picked up from the HangFire girls.
Despite growing interest in global barbecue, Matt believes most people still misunderstand what cooking with fire really entails. “Confidence is key,” he says. “People are scared they’ll either burn it or undercook it, so they just don’t try.”
That’s exactly why he started
Matty’s Smoke and Fire School. “People come to learn all the tips and tricks; and they stay connected. My DMs are always open for anyone who needs advice, inspiration, or just wants to find the best priced gear.”
While many still associate BBQ with burgers and bangers, Matt sees a quiet shift in the air. “I still get the ‘Ohh BBQ, like burgers and hotdogs?’ comments, but the tide’s turning. American style products like Texas Twinkies and Carolina sauces are showing up in Lidl’s middle aisle..”
As for what’s next, Matt’s already in motion. “Just started up the YouTube channel (BBQ Chop Shop), it’s for anyone wanting to learn more, see what the BBQ school is about, or just hang out with me while I cook.” He’s also working on shop upgrades and laying down ideas for a cookbook. When asked what his dream summer looks like, he doesn’t miss a beat: “Fire, Friends and Full bellies. That’s what BBQ’s always been about.”
In the heart of Cardiff’s everevolving food scene, a quiet revolution is simmering, and at its centre is Bohemién, the refined rustic brainchild of chef Tom Martin. With pop ups that sell out in hours, a deep affection for French cuisine, and a philosophy grounded in seasonality and soul, Tom is reimagining what it means to dine French in Wales.
“I’ve always wanted to pursue my own ideas without the constraints of a traditional restaurant,” says Tom.
“Bohemién is the dream I kept coming back to.”
The name Bohemién captures the spirit of French dining as Tom sees it: expressive and full of respect for the ingredients. Inspired by the free flowing, unpretentious style of brasseries and bistros across France, Bohemién draws its soul from tradition but speaks with a contemporary Welsh accent.
“There’s such a depth and richness to French cuisine,” Tom explains. “Drive 50 miles in any direction and you’ll find food
that’s completely different. That is what I wanted to capture with Bohemién.”
Despite a professional background in fine dining, Tom’s take on French food isn’t about white tablecloths or stiff service. Instead, he champions what he calls refined rustic food that’s simple and deeply flavoursome, focusing on seasonal local ingredients.
“Flavour is the most important thing, above all else,” he says. “The fine dining that inspires restaurants all over the world?
It started with humble French dishes, not fussy, but rooted in honesty and respect for ingredients.”
Tom builds his menus around the time of year, working closely with local Welsh producers. “British summertime pairs perfectly with the food of Provence - tomatoes, herbs, fresh greens, grilled fish with sauce vierge, ratatouille, salad Nicoise,” he says. “In colder months, we lean into the flavours of Normandy: root veg, apples, shellfish - things that feel closer to home but still distinctly French.”
Running a pop up while holding down a full time job might sound exhausting, but for Tom, Bohemién is his true passion project. “Pop ups let me meet new people, work in different spaces, and connect with a wide variety of guests. I absolutely love it.”
He’s also keenly aware of the bigger picture. “Anyone who’s willing to put in the work can start a pop up,” Tom says. “That’s why Cardiff’s scene is thriving, it’s full of creative people willing to take a chance.”
Bohemién’s events aren’t just about food. “People just want good food and to feel like the experience was worth it. That’s true whether you’re cooking French, Indian, or Welsh food. Good food is universal.”
Tom doesn’t just replicate French dishes, he reinterprets them through the lens of Welsh produce. “I love picking up forgotten French cookbooks and learning the stories behind the dishes. There’s so much untapped knowledge there. And combining that with the
incredible produce we have here in Wales, that’s where the magic happens.”
While he doesn’t play favourites when it comes to French regions, Bohemién is less about imitation
and more about storytelling. It’s a celebration of stories told on the plate, of Welsh soil meeting French soul, and of a chef daring to follow his dream one dish at a time.
There’s a quiet revolution growing on the hillsides of Wales. Yes, you read that right. Welsh wine is no longer a novelty, it’s a movement. Thanks to a blend of ambition, terroir, and an ever-so-slight rebellious streak, a new wave of Welsh winemakers is proving that their cool-climate creations can hold their own alongside more established wine regions. From structured reds and elegant rosés to skincontact whites that make sommeliers swoon, Welsh wine is making a name for itself, and it’s high time we paid attention.
Whether you’re new to the scene or already sipping your way through the valleys, here are four vineyards you should know about.
If you’ve ever doubted the magic of biodynamic winemaking, Ancre Hill might just convert you. Nestled on the edge of Monmouth, this trailblazing estate run by Richard and Joy Morris, is home to around 30,000 vines spread across two sites. The first plantings began in 2006, and since then, Ancre Hill has become known not just for its wines, but for its uncompromising approach to sustainability and vineyard care.

TASTING NOTES: Deep and savoury with layers of nectarine, tangerine, bruised apple and pear. Subtle hints of hay and chamomile add an earthy complexity. A perfect intro to skin contact whites for the curious drinker.
What began as a dream for Robb and Nicola Merchant has blossomed into one of Wales’ most respected vineyards. Located near the market towns of Abergavenny and Monmouth, White Castle is a love letter to perseverance and passion. From humble beginnings on a former smallholding to a now-thriving vineyard with award winning wines, their journey is as rich as the soil beneath their vines.

TASTING NOTES: Juicy blackcurrant and ripe plum with warming notes of toast and vanilla. Rich and rounded, this red is the kind you’ll want to linger over by a fi re or share with good friends.

In the rolling green pastures of the Vale of Glamorgan, Tair Gafr is doing things a little diff erently. Think miniature sheep instead of lawn mowers, goats that lend their name to the bottles, and a fi rm belief in regenerative farming. This tiny vineyard is big on biodiversity and big on fl avour. It’s rare for a debut wine to make waves, but St Hilary Vineyard isn’t your average newcomer. Set amid the storybook hills of the Vale of Glamorgan, this family run vineyard taps into the region’s ancient roots. With organic practices and a lowintervention ethos, Liz and Peter Loch are crafting wines that feel both modern and timeless. Their fi rst release has already turned heads, and we can’t wait to see what’s next.

WHERE EVERY BODY IS WELCOME, AND EVERY STORY MATTERS.
Casinha Tattoo Studio is more than a place to get tattooed. It’s a space built to welcome everyone, honour individuality, and make body art a truly positive, empowering experience. Nestled just off Barry’s High Street, this calm, private little studio was created with a simple but powerful intention: to make body art a positive, empowering experience for everyone.
Inclusive tattooing is at the heart of everything Casinha does. For Studio owner and tattoo artist Charlie, it’s about more than design. “Inclusive tattooing goes far beyond artistic style,” she explains. “It means creating an environment where people of all identities, body types, and skin tones feel safe, seen, and respected. It’s about removing intimidation, rejecting judgement, and offering space for open dialogue.”
From the start, Charlie has poured thought and care into every detail of the studio.
Casinha is a private, appointment-only space, designed to feel calm and comforting. The focus is always on you: your comfort, your voice, and your unique journey.
“No one should feel like they have to change who they are to get tattooed,” Charlie says. “My goal is to meet people exactly where they are, and work with them in a way that makes them feel confident and at ease.
The name Casinha - meaning “little house” in Brazilian
Portuguese, is a nod to Charlie’s time in Brazil and her partner’s heritage. And true to its name, the studio feels like a home. Warm, welcoming, unhurried. A place where you’re invited to slow down, settle in, and feel at ease.
Charlie specialises in ornamental and botanical work, with a particular love for freehand tattooing - drawing directly onto the skin without stencils, so each design flows naturally with the shape and movement of the body. Her work is thoughtful and fluid, with a deep respect for how ink sits on different skin tones and textures.
Sustainability is woven into Casinha’s foundations too. The studio uses biodegradable and eco-friendly products wherever possible, staying mindful of its impact. And soon, the new location will feature a small reception and shop area, with natural products from local makers, Charlie’s artwork, greeting cards, prints, clothing, and studio merch; all curated with the same heart and values.
At Casinha, tattooing isn’t just about what’s on your skin. It’s about how you feel throughout the entire experience. You’re welcomed as you are, listened to with care, and invited into a creative process that honours your story. So whether you’re tattoo-curious or already covered in ink, Casinha offers a new kind of experience, one that feels safe, warm, and entirely your own.

Ella Maclean-Howell had dreamed of competing in the Olympics since she was a schoolgirl watching the likes of Becky James and Dani King winning gold medals for Team GB at the Games. At 19 years old, the cyclist from Llantrisant became Wales’ first ever Olympic mountain biker, inspiring young girls across Great Britain to get on their bikes.
Ella’s first experience of an off-road trail came when Welsh Cycling took her from the track and into the mountains. From Eryri to the Afan Forest, Ella rode many of the mountain biking trails in Wales and aims to encourage others to give it a go themselves so they too could experience the fun and exhilaration of mountain biking.
Whatever your level of experience, there are different trails across the country to suit you. So, here’s Ella’s lowdown on the best mountain biking trails in Wales.
Great for: Beginners
Afan Forest Park was where I first got into mountain biking, thanks to sessions with Welsh Cycling. It’s perfect for beginners, with a green-graded rookie trail, a skills area, and a 2.4km blue loop for when you’re ready to level up.
Great for: All abilities
Coed y Brenin has something for everyone. I love it for its variety – from the easy ‘Yr Afon’ trail and skills area for beginners to the pump track for jumps. For more experienced riders, there’s the red ‘Dragon’s Back’ and the tough black-graded ‘Beast’ – a proper challenge!
Great for: Downhills and a lift back up
With 40 graded trails, Bike Park Wales is a must-visit for downhill fans. Like a ski resort, you can grab a minibus lift back up the mountain. It’s great for building technical skills, but there are also longer gravel trails if that’s more your thing.
Great for: Scenic, wellbeing rides
This spot offers stunning views and peaceful, longer rides – some up to 3–4 hours. The black-graded ‘Syfydrin’ trail is a real challenge, and the skills park is packed with features like rollers and tabletops. Plus, there’s a café, play area, and red kite feeding.
Great for: Adult coaching and big views
Cwmcarn has thrilling trails with views over the Bristol Channel. You’ll need some experience for these, but they’re worth it. There’s also a cycle shop offering coaching days for riders aged 18+.
Great for: Junior coaching
This park is ideal for young riders, with coaching sessions for all age groups – even balance bike sessions for toddlers. There’s plenty for adults too, plus a café on site.
Great for: Building skills
These local spots were key for me while improving my skills. Smilog is great for downhill riding, while Garth Mountain has some steep, challenging climbs – perfect if you’re ready to push yourself.

“Yoga was the doorway to my own healing. It didn’t fix me, it reminded me who I was. That’s what I offer others now: a way to reconnect, rebuild, and remember.”
In a world that moves fast and demands much, where loss, change, and emotional fatigue often go unseen, the need for gentler ways to restore ourselves has never been more urgent.
Tucked away in Neath, The Yoga Junkie is one of those rare spaces where slowing down becomes a sacred act. At the heart of it is founder Debbie Robinson, a woman whose work is led by lived experience, emotional depth, and a lifelong devotion to healing.
With over 25 years of experience, Debbie’s practice blends movement, sound, and emotional support. Trained in multiple yoga lineages and certified in mental health and grief recovery, her work goes far beyond postures, it’s about coming home to yourself with honesty and soul.
A signature offering at The Yoga Junkie, the Floating Sound Healing Journey sees guests cradled in silk hammocks, immersed in sound. Crystal bowls, voice, chimes, and percussion create a frequencyrich soundscape that soothes and resets the nervous system.
“Sound doesn’t always soothe,” Debbie reflects. “Sometimes it stirs. But whether it softens or awakens, it invites you to listen, to your breath, to what’s stirring beneath the surface, and to the parts of yourself ready to be met.”
As a certified Grief Recovery Specialist®, Debbie supports those navigating loss ,bereavement, divorce and identity shiftswith honesty and compassion. She also guides women through hormonal changes as a Menopause and Nutrition Coach, offering movement, nervous system care, and lived wisdom.
“Grief isn’t always loud,” she says. “Sometimes it’s silent, misunderstood, or buried. This work creates space to name it, feel it, and gently release what’s been carried too long.”
Debbie’s teaching spans from Rocket Yoga to restorative Yoga Nidra and trauma-informed practices. Her slow, sensoryled classes focus on emotional awareness and self-trust. Aerial Yoga, one of her most popular
classes, invites playful movement and deep release.
“People often arrive, holding back - physically and emotionally. But as they settle into the hammock and begin to trust the support beneath them, their breath softens, and so do they. That’s where change begins.”
Whether you’re navigating grief, hormonal shifts, or burnout, The Yoga Junkie is more than a studio, it’s a sanctuary. As a Reiki Master, coach, and educator, Debbie offers a whole-person approach that bridges physical, emotional, and energetic healing.
“Everything I share, I’ve lived,” Debbie says. “This isn’t about perfection, it’s about presence. And remembering you were never broken, just waiting to be seen.”

There’s a reason Green Man sells out in under an hour, without even announcing a line-up. Each August, in the breathtaking Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons), this much-loved festival becomes a celebration of creative, vibrant Wales. It’s more than just a music event. It’s a showcase of Welsh talent, community, food and soul.
Running from 14th to 17th August 2025, Green Man champions Welsh culture while welcoming global artists like Underworld, Wet Leg and TV On The Radio. But the spotlight shines just as brightly on the music, makers and voices that call Wales home. From Gwenno’s psych-pop sung in Cornish and Welsh, to indie favourites Los Campesinos! and Adwaith, this is where Welsh artists take pride of place.
But Green Man’s commitment runs far deeper than the lineup. It’s one of the UK’s last major independent festivals. Unbranded, unsponsored and proudly uncompromising. Every pint at The Courtyard comes from a Welsh brewery. Every meal celebrates local produce and independent traders. It’s a proud platform for small businesses, creatives and communities to thrive in front of 25,000 festivalgoers.
Festivals like Green Man are about more than entertainment. They’re about connection. Choosing a festival that reinvests in people and place. The Green Man Trust has supported over 12,000 people and hundreds of grassroots projects, from food banks to launching careers in science and the arts. Its values and
its nation are always at the centre.
Beyond the music, Green Man offers a full sensory escape. There’s forest bathing and yoga in Nature Nurture, mind-expanding talks in Einstein’s Garden, storytelling and art for children, and a weeklong Settler’s Pass for those wanting to explore more of Wales’ cultural treasures.
Why fly away when this is on our doorstep? Green Man reminds us that unforgettable experiences don’t need a passport. They need presence, pride and a love of where we come from. So this summer, skip the airport queues, stay and play in Wales, and be part of something truly homegrown!
For such a compact country, Wales boasts some spectacularly remote and enchanting islands. Scattered like secrets off the coastline, these pockets of wilderness offer puffin colonies, ancient pilgrim paths, tidal forts and total off-grid silence.
Where: Off Pembrokeshire
Best for: Puffin spotting and cliff walks
Skomer is a wildlife paradise. A short boat ride from Martin’s Haven, the island bursts into life each spring with thousands of nesting seabirds, most famously puffins (a record 43,626 this year). Day trips are popular, but staying overnight means near silence once the last boat leaves.
Where: Off the Llŷn Peninsula Best for: Spiritual retreat and stargazing
Known as the “Island of 20,000 Saints”, Bardsey has long been a place of pilgrimage. Steeped in myth and mystery, it is a final
resting place for medieval saints and a haven for artists today. There are no shops, no cars and barely any signal. Instead, you’ll find sheep-dotted hills, rare birds, wildflowers and night skies so clear it is a Dark Sky Sanctuary. A boat from Aberdaron is your gateway to peace.
Where: Near Skomer, off Pembrokeshire
Best for: Birdwatching and offgrid living
Often overshadowed by Skomer, Skokholm is a birdwatcher’s dream, home to tens of thousands of Manx shearwaters and storm petrels. Its rugged red sandstone, secluded coves and 18th-century lighthouse give it timeless charm. Stays are possible in a restored farmhouse but expect no WiFi or distractions, just sky, sea and birdsong.
Where: Tenby, Pembrokeshire
Best for: Tidal drama and history
Just off Tenby’s beach, St Catherine’s is the most accessible island here but no less fascinating. Linked to the mainland by a sandy causeway at low tide, it is crowned by a 19th-century fort that once housed soldiers and even a private zoo. Open seasonally, it offers curious tunnels, sweeping views and a surreal sense of isolation despite the colourful houses nearby.
Ready to island hop the Welsh way? Just bring sturdy shoes, a sense of adventure and a love for the wild.

It’s hard to capture the Ynyshir experience in words, because what happens there isn’t just eaten, or seen, or heard. It’s felt. Set deep in the heart of Mid Wales, nestled between the Cambrian Mountains and the Dyfi Estuary, Ynyshir is not simply a restaurant with rooms; it’s a destination that redefines what it means to dine.
Guests arrive after winding through some of the UK’s most breathtaking landscapes, often wondering if their sat nav is leading them astray. Until the gates open, the scent of woodsmoke drifts through the
wild meadow, and a large steel door welcomes you to something extraordinary.
At the helm is Chef Patron Gareth Ward, whose fearless, flavour-first philosophy has earned Ynyshir two Michelin stars, the only restaurant in Wales to hold such an honour. Yet accolades are only part of the story. From the moment you enter, you’re not just a diner, you’re part of a performance. The energy is high, the music loud, the atmosphere electric. The boundary between kitchen and table dissolves as the team moves with theatre-like
precision, each dish delivered with charisma and passion. What unfolds over four to five hours is not a meal, but a journey.
Everything at Ynyshir begins with ingredients, the finest in the world, sourced with obsessive care. From Welsh lamb to Japanese Madai to A5 Wagyu, nothing is chosen by chance. Gareth’s cooking is rooted in instinct and emotion, shaped by constant experimentation. In 2023, the introduction of an underground meat chamber added another layer to this pursuit of perfection, allowing
premium cuts to be aged in a space designed specifically to develop depth, complexity, and texture.
Despite visiting Japan for the first time only in 2024, Gareth’s admiration for its culinary culture runs deep. There’s a clear resonance between the Japanese reverence for ingredients and his own: every element treated with care, nothing wasted, nothing altered without purpose. He’s already planned return visits, beyond his most recent trip in June, to strengthen connections with suppliers and immerse further in the culture that so closely aligns with his own ethos.
While there are dishes guests return hoping to taste again, Ynyshir’s menu is ever evolving. A reflection of Gareth’s personal tastes, sharpened by curiosity
and refined by experience. Each creation is something he loves to eat himself, shaped and reshaped until it reaches its purest, boldest form. But it’s not just about the food. The team behind the pass and on the floor are the beating heart of Ynyshir. Their energy and skill create a rhythm that defines the experience, a kind of choreography that makes the evening pulse with life.
From this spirit of innovation came Gwen - Ynyshir’s younger sibling, born from a wildly successful summer pop up and now a permanent fixture in Machynlleth. Led by Corrin Harrison, Gareth’s former head
chef, Gwen offers something more intimate: a cosy, communal eight-seat kitchen table with a wine bar at the front, where conversation flows and flavours surprise. Corrin’s food is bold and precise, defined by a refined palate and fearless creativity. His Madai dish, for example, is a masterclass in delicate balance and impossible to forget. What Ynyshir offers is more than fine dining. It’s a commitment to emotion, to surprise, to pushing every sense to its limit. It is a place to stay, to savour, to slow down and reconnect. It’s not just with food, but with the wonder of experiencing something truly original. This is not a stop along the way. This is where the journey leads. And once you’ve been, you’ll never quite eat the same again.
To book a table or stay at Ynyshir visit - www.ynyshir. co.uk. The dinner experience starts at £390+VAT per person. The restaurant is open Tuesday, to Friday.
Barry, famous for Gavin and Stacey, is now a burgeoning wellness hub just 20 minutes from Cardiff. This former dock town, once known for its fairground, is redefining itself through a focus on wellbeing, leveraging its abundant natural beauty.
Barry offers a convenient escape to nature. Romilly Park and Porthkerry Country Park are perfect for mindful strolls, allowing you to savour the idyllic surroundings with a coffee from a local cafe. Cardiff’s beloved Brodies Coffee, a name synonymous with sun-drenched park visits and exceptional brews, has officially unveiled its latest venture: The Wall . Let’s be clear, this isn’t just another coffee shop; it’s the culmination of years of passion, experience, and a deep understanding of what makes Cardiff tick.
For over a decade, since 2013, the family behind Brodies has been perfecting their craft, serving up deliciousness from their outdoor havens across the city’s parks. The Wall, situated in a central Cardiff location , is the natural evolution of that journey. A perfect fusion of their indoor and outdoor expertise, seamlessly complementing their existing two park-based spots.
Step inside The Wall and you’re immediately struck by the inviting atmosphere. With ample indoor seating , including a charming upstairs area, it’s designed for lingering. Whether you’re seeking a cosy corner for a catch-up or a vibrant space for a pre or post-event refuel, The Wall has you covered. Yes, your four-legged friends are more than welcome, Brodies’ dog-friendly ethos extends to this new indoor sanctuary.
Food and drink are, of course, central to The Wall’s appeal. They’re offering a broad range with something to tempt every palate. But what truly sets this new spot apart is its in-house kitchen and bakery ; a first for Brodies. Imagine indulging in freshly baked goods, hot from the oven, alongside an array of chef’s specials. Cream teas and their speciality coffee menu are also on offer, perfect for a leisurely afternoon or a grab-and-go treat.
Speaking of coffee, Brodies’ commitment to quality shines through. Their unique blend, roasted right here in Cardiff , is a testament to their dedication to a truly local and exceptional brew.
While The Wall represents a significant milestone, don’t expect a Brodies on every corner just yet. The family is firm: with their three park-based locations, they’ve achieved everything they could have dreamed of, and there will be no further expansion . It’s about quality, not quantity, a philosophy that resonates deeply with Cardiff’s independent spirit.
In true Brodies style, expect The Wall to evolve. With a relaxed, no-bookings approach, they aim to accommodate everyone who walks through their doors. Plus, with exciting plans to collaborate
with local artists to further enhance the building, The Wall is set to become an ever-evolving canvas, reflecting the vibrant creativity of our city.
So, next time you’re in the heart of Cardiff, make a beeline for The Wall. It’s more than just a coffee shop; it’s a piece of Brodies’ heart, perfectly distilled into an indoor oasis, ready to become your new favourite Cardiff spot.
Tucked away in the heart of Penarth, Rest Space Floatation Rooms is more than just a wellness destination, it’s a heartfelt project by local couple Ryan and Charlotte. Lifelong advocates for mental health and alternative wellbeing practices, they were inspired to open Rest Space after personally experiencing the powerful effects of floatation therapy. Their mission? To offer a gentle, accessible way for people to slow down, switch off, and to reconnect with their minds, bodies, and themselves.
Floatation therapy at Rest Space involves effortlessly floating in a pod filled with warm water (35.5°C) and half a tonne of Epsom salts, designed to eliminate sensory input and provide deep physical and mental restoration. Ryan and Charlotte believe in the beautifully simple yet transformative nature of the practice. With a growing body
of scientific research supporting its benefits, ranging from stress relief and improved sleep to pain management and emotional clarity. They see floating as a powerful tool for modern wellbeing, free from long waiting lists or unwanted side effects.
At its core, Rest Space is about community. Ryan and Charlotte are passionate about building a supportive, welcoming environment where people can explore
alternative wellness in a safe and meaningful way. Whether you’re a seasoned floater or completely new to the idea, Rest Space is a space that goes beyond wellness trends to offer something truly essential: quiet. In a fast moving world, Rest Space is a gentle reminder that stillness is powerful.

Once a ritual reserved for misty Scandinavian forests and icy fjord backdrops, the sauna has found a new home along the raw, saltlaced coast of South Wales. And here, on the wild curve of Oxwich Bay, Ty Sawna is rewriting what it means to sweat, slow down, and truly connect.
It all began with a search for stillness. After years of travelling the world, drifting between oceans, hostels and healing spaces, Harri Barker returned to her roots with a vision to build something elemental. Her discovery of sauna culture in Ireland planted a seed, but it was the fire in her belly and the pull of home that brought Ty Sawna to life. Today, Harri’s wood fired barrel saunas sit just above the shoreline where the dunes meet the sea, inviting wanderers and locals alike to step in, breathe deep, and feel the glow.
But this isn’t just about sweat. It’s about science backed healing. With every session, blood pressure drops, heart rate rises, and tension melts from muscles like wax in
flame. Regular heat exposure has been shown to calm the nervous system, soothe inflammation, and even boost cognitive function. Paired with the cold kiss of the sea, the experience becomes something ancient and alchemical. Contrast therapy that sharpens the senses and softens the mind.
Inside the saunas Tŷ Mawr and Tŷ Bach Twt timber crackles, windows fog, and conversations flow like steam. You might find yourself alone, eyes closed to the rhythm of your breath. Or sharing the space with strangers, laughing softly between rounds as the cold bucket tilts and the ocean calls. Some come to recover, some to reconnect, and many come simply to remember what it feels like to be present in their own skin.
Harri, whose grounded warmth fills the room before the stove is even lit, leads a small but mighty team. The newest member, Rose, will be offering monthly guided sauna rituals, gently leading individuals through the rhythms of the four seasons with the use of whisks and body scrubs. Sessions range from peaceful solo experiences to vibrant community gatherings, each one an invitation to step beyond the everyday and into deep restoration.

Nathan Wyburn and Wayne Courtney are radio presenters, bloggers, Visit Cardiff ambassadors and charity patrons who have fundraised for St Andrew’s URC for over a decade. Interestingly, it was through Wayne’s first series of events here (the infamous Roath Bake Off) that he met Nathan, who was invited to guest judge in 2013.
Following a string of successful Bake Offs and Roath Rocks music events, the duo formed a lasting friendship with the St Andrew’s congregation. In 2018, Reverend Des approached the boys in urgent need of funds. The roof was leaking, and the upkeep of the historic building had become unsustainable. So, Wyburn and Wayne rallied Cardiff’s LGBTQ+ community to stage a Christmas drag show like no other. Dragged To Church became an annual phenomenon, raising tens of thousands each December. It has been featured on ITV News, BBC’s The One Show, and in Variety magazine, as actress Eve Myles has
written the story into a Hollywood film — a tale of community, acceptance, education and forgiveness on both sides! It also won ‘Event of the Year’ at the 2021 Cardiff Life Awards.
After the first Covid-19 lockdown, the duo transformed the old car park into St Andrew’s Coffee Court, a safe and welcoming place to meet.
Staff ed by young volunteers, every penny of profi t went towards the church’s upkeep. It was named ‘Best Coff ee Shop in Cardiff ’ at the 2021 Cardiff Life Awards!
Building on this, Wyburn and Wayne launched Cardiff Theatre Cafe. Each Sunday, performers who had missed out during lockdowns returned to the stage to share their talents. Many went on to appear at Pride Cymru, The Sherman Theatre, and feature in a documentary by the Iris Prize Film Festival.
By summer 2024, the building was at a crossroads again. Having passed on the Coff ee Court, Wyburn and Wayne took over the day-to-day running of the main church hall. It was already used by some weekly groups, but needed major renovation to stay open. Now, under their leadership, it hosts a full seven-day schedule. From yoga and dance to theatre and tabletop gaming. Friday and Saturday nights are packed with musical theatre, children’s parties, family-friendly wrestling, drag acts, tribute artists, burlesque, bands, comedy, visual art and more! It has become a vibrant and eclectic space where everyone can be themselves.
Style of the City magazine honoured Wyburn and Wayne with a Community Award in 2024. Now, in 2025, Cardiff Theatre Cafe is thriving. It’s also available for you to hire! Whether you’re planning a party, private gig or weekly group, get in touch via @Cardiff TheatreCafe on social media.
And yes, it’s still a church, with Sunday service at 11am in the main building!

There’s a certain kind of magic to be found at Pugh’s Garden Village, a place that feels less like a store and more like a village alive with colour, community and care. It’s in the scent of fresh blooms drifting through the air, in the warmth of the welcome from staff who truly know their roses from their ranunculus, and in the gentle hum of customers browsing everything from hanging baskets to handmade deli treats.
This sense of place, heart and heritage has been lovingly cultivated for over a century. The story of Pugh’s begins with Sydney Pugh, a former gardener at Croft Castle in Hereford, who relocated to Cardiff in the early 20th century. In Rhiwbina, he established Wenallt Nurseries, a modest roadside business selling fruit, vegetables, milk and eggs. A humble beginning that planted the seeds of something extraordinary.
The baton passed to his son, Colin Pugh, who brought post-
war ambition and horticultural training to the family trade. He expanded into produce retail, then took a leap of faith by transforming a one-acre plot in Morganstown, Radyr into a garden centre. Colin’s vision and hands-on work ethic laid the groundwork for what would become one of Wales’ most beloved independent garden centres.
By the 1980s, Colin’s sons Graham and Ian had joined the business, bringing fresh ideas and an appetite for modernisation. From raised beds to the region’s first garden centre TV ads, innovation was constant. They added concessions, expanded parking and embraced community partnerships, all while maintaining their father’s belief that growth should stay at the heart of the business.
Today, with locations in Morganstown and the Vale of Glamorgan, Pugh’s is a thriving lifestyle destination blending gardening, shopping, eating and
experiences in one leafy setting. Visitors can sip specialty coffee at The Watering Can or The Orange Tree Express, enjoy home cooked meals at The Garden Kitchen, browse a food hall brimming with over 1,000 Welsh products, or explore an indoor jungle of houseplants and gardening essentials.
This summer, as gardens across South Wales burst into life, Pugh’s stands ready to help the community reconnect with the outdoors. Because here, it’s never just about what you plant. It’s about who you grow with.
