At the end of October, Chancellor Rachel Reeves unveiled the UK Government’s Autumn Budget, which is aimed at stabilising the economy and laying the groundwork for growth after over a decade of stagnation. Addressing the significant financial challenges inherited–including record debt levels and unfunded spending pressures–the Chancellor has prioritised measures that avoid higher taxes for working people while ensuring substantial investments in Wales. Central to the Budget is a landmark £21 billion funding package for the Welsh Government in 2025/26, representing the largest settlement in real terms since devolution. This includes an additional £1.7 billion through the Barnett formula, designated for both day-today spending and capital projects.
Welsh Secretary Jo Stevens hailed the Budget as a historic achievement, emphasising its positive impact on public services and wages across Wales. “This Budget has delivered for Wales for the first time in a generation,” she said. “The largest settlement since devolution will boost spending on essential services like the NHS and support working families through wage increases.”
This festive season, the Cardiff Bay Reindeer Trail is back, offering free family fun as part of the Christmas celebrations. Organised by the Cardiff Bay Waterfront Partners, the event invites participants to help Santa track down nine of his lost reindeer in an exciting scavenger hunt. The trail is now open and will run until Sunday, January 5, 2025, guiding visitors through some of Cardiff Bay’s most iconic attractions.
The trail features eight custom-made willow reindeer sculptures, with a ninth reindeer presented as an augmented reality experience at Roald Dahl Plass. Families can bring this digital reindeer to life using a smartphone, thanks to support from Cardiff Harbour Authority. Participants can pick up a trail map at various venues or access it online, with the option to complete the trail in either Welsh or English. Key participating locations include Mermaid Quay, Wales Millennium Centre, the Senedd, Craft in the Bay, Norwegian Church, The Coal Exchange, and The Red Dragon Centre.
Aspecial ground-breaking ceremony has marked the beginning of the construction of the new Willows High School. This £60 million project is part of Cardiff Council and the Welsh Government’s Band B Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme. The initiative will see the current Willows High School relocated and rebuilt to accommodate 900 students aged 11 to 16, along with a 30-place Special Resource Base for students with Complex Learning Needs.
The new school is designed to create an outstanding educational environment that supports teaching and learning. It will feature comprehensive sports facilities, including a sports hall, gym, drama studio, and grass pitches, which will also be accessible for public use outside school hours. The project aims to promote active travel through improved pedestrian facilities at the site, encouraging sustainable commuting.
A key highlight of the project is its commitment to sustainability, as the new Willows High School will be Net Zero Carbon. This means that both the construction materials and the building’s operations will adhere to strict environmental standards, aligning with the Welsh Government’s sustainability goals.
Wales Millennium Centre (WMC) has announced the creation of a state-of-theart digital-first performance venue, marking a significant step in its commitment to the future of creativity in Wales. This innovative space will offer a platform for immersive storytelling and emerging technologies, reshaping the arts landscape in Wales and beyond. The venue will feature a 550-capacity area dedicated to immersive experiences, along with production, rehearsal, and training facilities, making it WMC’s first stand-alone building since its opening by The Queen in 2014.
The new venue will complement WMC’s existing performance spaces, including the 1,900-seat Donald Gordon Theatre, the 250-seat Weston Studio, and the 150-seat Cabaret venue. It is expected to boost the Centre’s economic and cultural impact, engaging over 10,000 participants in creative training over the next five years. This expansion will strengthen WMC’s role in the creative industries, providing more opportunities for young people and artists to develop new skills, present innovative work, and contribute to the growth of Wales’ vibrant arts scene.

The iconic historical staples that help the city come alive
The festive season in Cardiff is a marvel people treasure close to their hearts, and it’s right around the corner. Wales’ capital has solidified itself with Cardiffians and visitors alike as one of the most entertaining spots to visit during Christmas. Known for its rich history and vibrant mix of cultures, the city offers a unique mix of traditional and modern celebrations that make this time of the year truly special for everyone.
Since the late 19th century, Cardiff’s iconic Victorian arcades, such as the Royal Arcade and Morgan Arcade, have been decorated, enticing visitors to see the beautiful architecture. Fast forward to the 1960s, the likes of St Mary Street have been a focal point for visitors and residents alike. With the street full from top to bottom in Christmas lights, it stands as a place to visit during the festive period to get you into some serious Christmas cheer.
As we roll into the festive period, here are a handful of some of Cardiff’s most popular and well-known Christmas additives that make the festive season just that extra bit special.
At the centre of Cardiff’s Christmas celebrations is the beloved Winter Wonderland, set on the lawns just outside of the City Hall. This annual event is a highlight for families and friends, featuring an ice rink, thrilling rides, and a charming Christmas market. Visitors can skate under the stars, enjoy seasonal treats, and soak in the festive atmosphere. Coming along in the last few years, Winter Wonderland now hosts a seasonal bar which is a great place to meet up with your best friends or even your work colleagues for the annual party.
One of the most striking features of Cardiff during Christmas is the dazzling array of lights that adorn the streets. From the historic Cardiff Castle to the bustling shopping areas, twinkling lights create a warm and inviting ambience. Another grand display of lights is offered over at Bute Park. With visitors invited to take a stroll through an incredibly thought-out light display, the walk through the lit-up woodland and fields is accompanied by live music and a massive array of illuminations - no wonder it’s the most popular light trail outside of London.
For those seeking unique gifts and festive options, the Cardiff Christmas Market is a must-visit. Located in the heart of the city, this market boasts over 200 stalls showcasing handmade crafts, artisanal foods, and seasonal specialities. With Christmas events hosted throughout the festive period, the Market is one of the beating hearts of the city, truly displaying the welcoming culture of Wales.
Christmas in Cardiff is a wonderful time for families to come together and enjoy a variety of activities. The city offers numerous festive workshops, such as crafting decorations and baking festivetreats. For example, at St Fagans National History Museum, children can meet Santa, which includes a gift and storytelling sessions in a cosy setting. The Cardiff Story Museum also hosts special events during the festive season, featuring engaging storytelling sessions that delight young audiences, often free with museum admission.
No Christmas celebration is complete without indulging in festive food, and Cardiff excels in this area. The city’s vibrant culinary scene features restaurants and cafes offering seasonal menus that highlight traditional dishes with modern twists.
The Christmas markets, running from November to December, tempt visitors with delicious treats, including mulled wine, mince pie, and gourmet street food options. Let’s not forget, you can get a roast dinner in a Yorkshire pudding - what more do you want?
The festive season in Cardiff is also a time for giving back. Various charitable events and initiatives take place throughout December, encouraging residents to support those in need. For example, the annual Santa Dash, a fun run around Cardiff Bay, raises funds for heart disease prevention. Local organisations often host Christmas parties for underprivileged children, ensuring that everyone can experience the joy of the season. This sense of community and compassion truly makes Cardiff shine during Christmas.
As the Christmas celebrations wind down, Cardiff gears up for an unforgettable New Year’s Eve. The magnificent Cardiff Castle provides a breathtaking backdrop, setting the stage for a welcome to the new year. Whether you’re looking to dance the night away at one of the city’s popular nightclubs or share a quiet moment with family and friends, Cardiff has plenty to offer for a celebration to remember.

Garlands draped over bannisters or mantles add lush decoration with pinecones, berries, and lights. Try monochrome garlands for a modern touch or install extendable poles in windows for layered décor.

or rustic ceramics for elegance. Natureinspired centrepieces—evergreens, berries, and candles—create a warm ambience. Mix candle heights for depth and pair with crystal glassware for an elevated touch.
Lighting transforms spaces. Wrap fairy lights around staircases or scatter candles on mantles
for magic. Battery-operated candles offer a safe option, especially nestled in greenery. Combine warm white lights with jewel-toned ones for richness and depth.
Embrace sentimentality with heirlooms and handcrafted ornaments. Decorations used year after year evoke cherished memories, while personalized touches like name tags or knitted stockings make your home uniquely inviting.
Opt for eco-friendly décor like wooden ornaments, beeswax candles, and biodegradable garlands. Potted plants double as trees or décor and can be replanted postseason. Wrap gifts in reusable cloth or recycled paper for a sustainable touch.

n immersive light trail is once again the centrepiece of Christmas in Cardiff this year with 11 installations that launched in mid-November. Brought to you by FOR Cardiff, The Light of Winter trail is a free immersive activity that will run until January 5, guiding visitors around the city during the festive season.
As part of The Light of Winter trail, Cardiff’s Central Square has been transformed by an audio and visual projection called Cardiff Aurora that illuminates the façade of Cardiff Central Station between 5 pm and midnight each night. Commissioned by FOR Cardiff and Christmas at Bute Park, Cardiff Aurora tells the story of a winter’s night as trains from past and present transport the viewer from the forests of Wales to the bright lights of Cardiff. Designed by projection mapping artists Illuminos with illustrations by four Welsh artists: Sahar Saki, Jack Skivens, Frank Duffy, and Beth Blandford, the projection celebrates Welsh art, tradition, and folklore.
The Illuminated Reeds Symphony interactive light and sound experience has also returned to Cardiff’s Dock Feeder for a second year. Designed by Welsh artists and commissioned by FOR Cardiff and Christmas at Bute Park, the installation imitates reeds floating on water, with LED lights and sounds of the Welsh countryside coming to life when visitors jumped, tap, or dance on the interactive ground pads.
Cardiff’s Victorian and Edwardian arcades have also been transformed by The Light of Winter trail. The new festive lighting scheme was realised through funding from the UK Government Shared Prosperity Fund. The installation sees the entrances to Cardiff’s historic arcades adorned with festive lanterns, lights, and garlands inspired by the building’s 19th-century heritage.
The Light of Winter trail was illuminated for the first time on the evening of Thursday, November 14, kicking off three days of celebrations marking the start of Christmas in Cardiff. At 5 pm on Thursday, November 14, the Cardiff Kids Xmas Lights installation designed by pupils at St Cuthbert’s Primary School, Butetown, was revealed on Cardiff Queen Street, followed by the illumination of Cardiff Aurora. Brass bands, stilt walkers, children’s entertainers, and LED glow performers entertained crowds at Central Square, Hayes, Queen Street, and High Street.
Friday, November 15, saw the return of the popular Cardiff Night Market as part of the City of Arcades: Cardiff After Dark event. For one night only, Cardiff Market was open
until 9 pm, and shops, bars, and restaurants in Cardiff city centre ran exclusive evening events from sherry tasting to chocolate making.
On Saturday, November 16, the annual City of Arcades Day returned with guided tours, special offers, and in-store events. First launched in 2019, City of Arcades Day won several national and international awards and attracted thousands to the Welsh capital.
FOR Cardiff Associate Director Emily Cotterill said: “Christmas is always an exciting time in Cardiff, with so much for everyone to see and do whatever their age.
“This year we are thrilled to have been able to create a fresh approach to festive lights that brings in all the best the city has to offer at Christmas, alongside a roster of free events for all to enjoy. The display at Central Square will give visitors arriving in Cardiff by train and bus a dazzling first glimpse of the city. We hope all these events will encourage more people to explore the city and everything it has to offer this winter season.”
Natalie Isaac, Director of the Forty Four Group, said: “City of Arcades Day is always a great occasion as it brings new people into the city centre. People look at new businesses that they haven’t been to before thanks to the special promotions and events.
“We know that people are saving money for Christmas at this time of the year, but it’s good that people get out and about and visit this amazing city centre. Last year, people loved our breakfast offer and it got people coming in and trying our food, which helped us gain new customers.”
Visitors can find out more about Christmas in Cardiff at the Visit Cardiff website. The Light of Winter Trail map is available to download from November 11 with physical maps at key locations across the city.
Day Fever, a popular daytime clubbing event, has taken the UK by storm. Founders Vicky McClure and Jonathan ‘Jonny’ Owen spoke to Cardiff Life about their upcoming event, Sleigh Fever, and the inspiration behind creating Day Fever. Sleigh Fever is a festive twist on the Day Fever experience, transforming it into a seasonal celebration for the holidays.
Vicky, star of BBC’s hit drama Line of Duty, and Welsh actor-producer Jonny celebrated their wedding in Nottingham last August after a six-year engagement. Together, the couple share a deep passion for film and television, running their production company, BYO Films. But recently, the pair have ventured into new territory, launching an innovative daytime clubbing experience aimed at audiences who feel they’ve outgrown the traditional club scene.
The idea for what they’ve dubbed Day Fever came to Jonny during a visit to Liverpool, where he noticed the city’s afternoon bar scene was thriving with an older crowd. Inspired, he envisioned a clubbing experience that would offer people a chance to enjoy music and dancing in a safe and vibrant environment – during the day.
Although Day Fever is open to everyone, Jonny and Vicky specifically market it to people over 30. “We wanted to create a space where a generation of people who love music and dancing but aren’t into the late-night clubbing atmosphere anymore can feel right at home,” Jonny explained. This unique approach has resonated strongly, with attendees praising the events for fostering a community spirit.
“It’s taken off because it matters to people,” Vicky shared. “There’s a real need for a space where people can immerse themselves in dance, music, and good company.” Each Day Fever event is tailored to its location, with music, films, and clips curated to reflect the audience. Vicky even joked, “If you’re in Wales, you can expect to hear a lot of Tom Jones!”
Later in December, Day Fever will host a special holiday-themed event, Sleigh Fever, featuring festive tunes to make the occasion memorable. “We want people to feel they have a place to dance, socialize, and unwind, and as long as the demand is there, we’ll keep delivering,” Jonny added.
Balancing the demands of their careers in the entertainment industry with their newfound passion for daytime clubbing hasn’t been easy, yet it’s something they cherish. Vicky described the balancing act: “It’s tricky, but in the creative industry, you grab opportunities while they’re there.” Jonny agreed, saying, “We’ve always loved music, film, and the arts, so it’s all tied into what we love doing.”
Day Fever has sold nearly 75,000 tickets over the past year, with each event reinforcing the community spirit Vicky and Jonny set out to create. With their next event, Sleigh Fever, coming to Cardiff’s Depot on December 28, 2024, it’s clear that they’re not slowing down anytime soon. For those seeking a unique and welcoming space to dance and connect, Day Fever promises an unforgettable experience.
Sleigh Fever is taking place at DEPOT Cardiff on December 28.

This Christmas, don’t sit in front of the television, scrolling and trying to decide what to watch. Instead, trust Film Probe to recommend the best Christmas movies. In this list, I wanted to share a variety of features from a range of genres that can speak to everyone’s tastes.
Firstly, Home Alone (1990) – When I think of Christmas, I think of this. It is the perfect film to start off Christmas, written by the master John Hughes this film takes you on a magical adventure of family and fun. Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) is a scrappy boy who finds himself accidentally left home alone over the holidays. He must protect his house from prying eyes as two criminals attempt to rob the ‘empty’ home.
Let’s change things up and suggest a ‘Christmas’ film that begs the question, is it a Christmas movie? Well, in Film Probe’s opinion, yes it is! Die Hard (1988) is an unconventional holiday movie that despite the action sequences and use of strong language will subconsciously make you excited for Christmas. Die Hard (1988)
holds all the classic festive themes from rekindling love and reuniting with family, this film has become a classic.
If you’re looking for something new this Christmas, maybe a film you’re yet to watch, I cannot recommend The Holdovers (2023) enough. This beautiful, snowy feature is one of the most heartwarming coming-of-age stories you can watch this time of year.
poignant story for this season, it teaches us the importance of compassion, family and teamwork. It is a thoroughly enjoyable watch for the whole family and I guarantee it will become a joyful favourite you put on every year.
Finally, I wanted to end this list with a classic Christmas film. A film which will stay with you and ingrain itself into your memory – It’s A Wonderful Life (1946). For some, classic Christmas films can be cliched or boring but for Film Probe, It’s A Wonderful Life never fails to put a smile on my face (and maybe shed a tear or two). This beautifully emotional piece tells the story of George Bailey (James Stewart) who is visited by an angel from heaven when he cannot go on with his life. George is given the chance to see his impact on the world and those around him, showing George how important his life has been and how much would change without him. Although a sad storyline, It’s A Wonderful Life (1946) is not upsetting but instead, it makes you feel warm inside. It fills you with Christmas spirit and reminds you how important you truly are. I watch this film every Christmas Eve and my Christmas feels incomplete without it.
As the holiday season closes in, an uptight teacher (Paul Giamatti) at a prep school is tasked with the job of babysitting a handful of students who have nowhere to go home. He soon forms an unlikely bond with a brainy but damaged troublemaker and the two embark on a sweet, charming tale of self-discovery and friendship.
If you want to watch something with the whole family, young children included, Arthur Christmas (2011) is not one to miss. Santa’s adorable son Arthur sets out on a mission to deliver the last present which has been forgotten. Arthur Christmas is a heartwarming,

As Christmas rolls in, it is finally acceptable to plan your whole day around the TV. Christmas is a time for family and being thankful but I think we can all agree, that it is also a time for some unforgettable British television.
From popularised John Lewis adverts to comeback specials, television has always been a core part of Christmas in the UK. Television is a way for audiences to come together in front of the screen with their families and the rest of the country. This article details the most anticipated Christmas specials you can expect to air this month.
Following on from the 2019 Christmas special, audiences can watch the British staple Gavin & Stacey as it returns for an anticipated episode on Christmas Day. The cast was seen filming at the iconic Barry locations this September which has encouraged a huge buzz around this fan-favourite sitcom. We can expect plenty of laughs but also plenty of heartache this Christmas Day as this will be the final episode ever of Gavin & Stacey.
Featuring the fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) this annual Doctor Who Christmas Special will bring whimsy and magic to your Christmas Day. This episode features guest star Nicola Coughlan (Bridgerton, Derry Girls) as she helps the Doctor on a time-expanding, world-defying mission.
The Brockmans are back for a 2024 Christmas special after an eight-year hiatus. Airing on BBC One this Christmas Day, we finally get to see Hugh Dennis and Claire Skinner return as Sue and Pete, the parents of three unruly children.
Grab your tissues as tears are expected if you plan to watch the return of the beautifully moving drama, Call the Midwife. With the special release of a two-part Christmas Day Special, all the regular characters will return for a Christmas set in 1969.
Airing this Boxing Day on BBC One, watch the introduction to new DI Mervin Wilson who joins the team in Saint Marie. This Death in Paradise Christmas Special is the third for the popular series, after the success of the 2023 special with a whopping eight million viewers, you won’t want to miss this highly anticipated return!
Tune in to BBC One on Christmas Day for the annual return of the long-running family sitcom, Mrs Brown’s Boys. The series will release their now-traditional episodes on both Christmas and New Year, if you enjoy this laugh-out-loud series don’t miss out!
Finally and easily one of the most anticipated Christmas specials this year is the return of British stop motion icons, Wallace and Gromit. This classic return will be available to stream on Netflix over the festive season, from the 18th of December. This exciting return will see Wallace and Gromit greeted by a familiar face, if you are a long-time fan of this iconic duo you truly won’t want to miss out on this longawaited return of Feathers McGraw. Feathers first appeared in the 1993 short film The Wrong Trousers but he is back for revenge after being imprisoned for 30 years.
Of course, Christmas isn’t complete without the usual lineup of TV soaps and reality specials. This year be sure to watch out for Eastenders, Emmerdale, Coronation Street and local drama Casualty for their thrilling seasonal specials. Along with the addition of Strictly Come Dancing, The Great Christmas Bake Off and The Great New Year’s Bake Off.
The festive season is upon us, and with it comes the joyous (and often delicious) task of planning the perfect Christmas spread. If you’re on the hunt for a couple of festive recipes that’ll wow your guests without keeping you stuck in the kitchen for hours, you’re in for a treat.
Welsh chef and presenter, Colleen Ramsey, has shared two of her go-to festive favourites: a decadent Tiramisu Trifle and sweet-and-savoury Honey Feta Bites. The trifle is a showstopper, combining all the indulgence of classic tiramisu with the added charm of individual servings – perfect for a festive dinner or a special dessert to share.
And those Honey Feta Bites? They’re little flavour bombs that balance creamy, tangy feta with the sweetness of honey and a touch of fresh herbs – ideal for nibbling while you sip on mulled wine or wait for the turkey to roast. Ready to add some new crowd-pleasing recipes to your Christmas table? Let’s get cooking.
Use the following to make the custard:
700 ml milk
Loads of vanilla
120 sugar
30 cornflour
30 custard powder
4 eggs
1. Whisk the sugar with the custard powder and corn flour and then mix in the eggs until the sugar has dissolved. Heat the milk with vanilla. Temper the eggs with the hot milk by ladling a small amount into the eggs and whisking rapidly. This prevents the eggs from scrambling. Then add back into the saucepan with the rest of the milk. Whisk for about 5 minutes, ensuring the custard reaches boiling point to cook out the flour.
2. Leave to one side to cool, stirring occasionally. You can press some cling film on top so it doesn’t form a skin.
3. Strain a tin of mixed berries or raspberries and mix the juice with some black cherry liqueur (optional)
4. Soak the sponge fingers in this and layer one bottom layer of fingers. Dollop some jam here and there amongst the sponge. Top with custard and some grated white chocolate; Then repeat with more fingers, jam, custard, and grated white choc.
5. Whisk up the following in a bowl:
300 cream
150 mascarpone
Tablespoon vanilla paste
Vanilla syrup 100 ml (optional)
Top with this, and then add fresh raspberries. For extra flavour grab, 100g of freeze-dried raspberries – blitz them up in a food processor and sprinkle over the top as you would cocoa powder/ icing sugar as dusting for the top.
6/7 filo pastry sheets
Butter melted
Feta cheese
Honey
1 egg
Toasted sesame seeds
Walnuts finely chopped
1. Preheat the oven to 185.
2. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
3. Take 6/7 filo pastry sheets and cut them in half.
4. Brush all the sheets with melted butter.
5. Cut your feta into bite-sized cubes. Then cut each half into strips wide enough to incase the cubes.
6. Place the cube at the top and then fold it over continuously until it makes a parcel. Egg wash and top with toasted sesame seeds and finely chopped walnuts.
7. Pop onto the tray and cook for 15 minutes and then drizzle with loads of honey. Chilly honey also works nicely.
Not all tinsel and turkey…

Whilst the Autumn Series might have been one to forget for Wales fans, the festive period redraws the battle lines within the nation as friends become foes again and the regions face off in the annual Christmas derbies.
Red shirts will be packed away by all but one of the regions, as club colours return and Ospreys, Cardiff Rugby, Dragons and Scarlets jerseys are washed, ironed and then covered up by winter coats, hats, scarves and gloves. Fans will make treacherous winter journeys; a whole 63 miles on New Year’s Day from Rodney Parade to Parc Y Scarlets being the furthest!
On December 21, the Ospreys will be trimming their trees and ensuring their party platters are out as they host their pals from over the estuary, Scarlets, at the Swansea Dot Com Stadium. Since the inception of the regions in 2003, the two sides have faced off a total of 40 times, with Ospreys edging it with 22 wins. There have been two draws as well, but just like a joint Christmas present with a sibling, who wants to have to share the spoils?
Christmas gorging on the big day will be kept to a minimum for Dragons and Cardiff Rugby players, their Boxing Day clashes taking priority over pigs in blankets and Christmas pudding… except for maybe the front-row heavies!
The capital city region is away from home for this one, but they’ve won this fixture on 3 times as many occasions as the boys from the ‘port. And that’s not to mention the winning streak they’ve got over their near neighbours coming into this edition of the clash.
And then New Year, same story, as we all swap opponents and go again. Cardiff kicks off 2025 by welcoming the men in black. A sure sell-out at the Arms Park and a great excuse for everyone to show off their new Christmas threads on the legendary terraces.
Scarlets play host to the Dragons just a couple of hours later meaning that even if you’ve finished all that Christmas food, there’s still a feast on offer on the 1st of January.
And even though it looks unlikely that a Welsh side will reign supreme in the league this term, the Welsh shield is up for
grabs. The unofficially named ‘Tal Salley Trophy’ (after the first man to represent all 4 regions!) will be awarded to the side that finishes top of the log in the round-robin between regions. All games will be televised across BBC Wales, Premier Sports and S4C.
For those looking for a rugby fix during betwixtmas, that lull between Christmas and New Year, the Super Rugby Cymru league has a full festive fixture list on the 28th. Except RGC who make the almighty shlep from North Wales to the Brewery Field for a 5:15 pm start, all of these games are full of tasty, traditional derbies.
In the Wild West, Llandovery host Carmarthen Quins, things will get spicy between Ebbw Vale and Pontypool, the blue and blacks come up against the black and ambers when Cardiff plays Newport and the All Whites welcome the Wizards for Swansea against Aberavon. All of these are 2.30 pm kick-offs.
So whether you’re a rugby tragic who’s asked Santa for a Lions jersey and a new kicking tee, casual fans who want to soak up the national game with the fam …or even if you’re just trying to find an excuse to escape the in-laws for a few hours; Welsh rugby has plenty to offer this Christmas time.

These high-profile matches offer fans the chance to see world-class cricket on home turf. The fast-paced Vitality Blast and the thrilling Hundred tournament will deliver action-packed moments and an electric atmosphere which is sure to keep fans on the edge of their seats.

Like Picasso’s fantastic execution of colour throughout his artwork, we must deeply analyse the importance of the various shades available this Christmas. So what will it be? Do we fall into our fate of never wearing that festivecoloured jumper ever again, or do we sacrifice the excitement of being part of the holiday spirit and opt for neutral shades?
We could debate this for hours, but I think there is an easy solution: Embrace the mind of a minimalist. What I mean by this is to avoid glaring prints and to focus on creating the majority of the outfit with basics and general staples that can be mixed and matched in neutral shades (such as beiges, blacks, whites, etc.), allowing you to display multiple outfits.
However, it’s the Christmas season, and there is no Grinch in the world that can stop you from wearing that pop of festive colour. Make the most of these colours by investing in scarves, hats, gloves, and other complementary pieces in those wonderful reds and greens we all love to

Christmas spirits are at an all-time high this season, as we hear the occasional murmuring of Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You or as we undergo the hefty but rewarding process of putting up the tree. We are all dying for the amazing joys that Christmas brings us, and I’m here to tell you that when it comes to fashion, this year is no less exciting. With turtlenecks, knitted scarves, and knee-high boots, this year Cardiff certainly knows how to dress to impress, so this is your chance to take a sneak peek at what Christmas trends fashion enthusiasts are holding to heart this winter.

Whether you’re a Pinterest-inspo addict or a high-fashion runway critic, we all want to know whether fashion trends are realistic. Especially for this winter, it is more important than ever to ensure that we are Anna Wintour-approved but still warm and comfy. To do so, here’s a line to learn like gospel: if it’s knee-high, it’s a buy.

If you find yourself waiting to wear that suit for a special occasion, then this winter is the time to sport it. Fashion gurus are practically on their knees this season when it comes to the bulky and sophisticated silhouettes of well-fitted blazers, and who are we to detest? At this time of year, we see individuals spicing up their attire with luxurious black or casual beige, but what’s stopping anyone from rocking that inner Santa with a Christmasred blazer, embracing the streets as their runway? And let’s talk about the comeback of ties this season; many runway walks feature corporate-inspired designs that accentuate the power of a simple tie. So make sure to have that necktie on this season because we walk this Christmas in class.

The craft of wrapping a present varies from person to person, but I know the joy I feel when I see that little ribbon bow on top, highlighting the effort and beauty of the gift. Like in previous years, the coquette style has emerged into 2024, even appearing in designs by brands such as Prada, featuring bows and ribbons prominently.

If your grandma knits you a jumper this Christmas, then trust me when I say you’re in luck. This season, like most winters, loves its fair share of woolly knits and cotton fabrics, and we like our prints bold and creative. So tell grandma to let her creativity flow with her knitted or embroidered designs. What I’ll be looking out for this Christmas is a preppy girl/academia boy spin-off with checked designs and feather or faux-shearling jackets, as fashion critics applaud these choices for this year’s central pieces. With that said, we all know that no Christmas outfit is complete without a glitz-and-glam aspect, so keep your eyes peeled for silver or gold, sequins or sparkles, because Cardiff knows how to shine in glitter.

Coquette is a trend that embodies the idea of “I’m just a girl,” promoting youthfulness within fashion and lifestyle. Coquette definitely made the cut this year, so why not incorporate it into your outfits this Christmas with hot red silk bows or simply add some green ribbon to some perfectly braided hair?

Your Guide to Volunteering in Cardiff This Christmas
by Amy Wild
Christmas in Cardiff is always a magical time, but for many, the season can also be challenging—a time when warmth, food, and companionship are in short supply. This year, why not embrace the true spirit of Christmas by volunteering to make someone’s festive season a little brighter? Cardiff’s charities work tirelessly to support vulnerable locals all year round, but during the colder months, they need extra hands to make it all happen. From serving hot meals to offering companionship, there are many ways to make a difference. If you’re looking to spread some festive cheer, volunteering in Cardiff this Christmas is a wonderful place to start.
As Wales’ largest homelessness charity, The Wallich supports over 8,000 people across the country. This winter, its services— including helping people off the streets, keeping them off the streets, and creating new opportunities—aim to raise £20,000 and support 4,000 people across Wales. Each of its hostels will host a Christmas dinner, where residents and staff cook and dine together, creating a sense of family for those who might otherwise be alone.
Around this time of year, we’re constantly reminded it’s ‘the season to be jolly,’ however for some, it can be one of the loneliest, most isolating times of the year,” The Wallich tells Cardiff Life Magazine. “Many of those in temporary accommodation have no family or friends to spend Christmas with, so our hostels become their community. We want to provide everyone living with us on Christmas day with a warm Christmas meal. We also want to give something special to everyone we support by giving them a gift this Christmas, regardless of whether they celebrate Christmas.”
You can help by donating or volunteering to cook and serve dinner. Visit thewallich.com for more details.
Splott Community Volunteers provide warm meals and support to Cardiff’s disadvantaged, homeless, financially challenged, and refugee communities. The team is made up of locals from all walks of life, offering a welcoming environment for people who may feel isolated over Christmas. Email info@splottcommunityvolunteers.co.uk to find out how you can contribute.
Each year, the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital for Wales cares for around 73,000 children, providing essential and often life-saving treatment in a warm, welcoming environment. This Christmas, you can help bring festive spirit to young patients by volunteering as “Santa’s elf” in their festive grotto.
“We’re looking for cheerful, festive volunteers to join us at Santa’s Grotto in IKEA Cardiff!” says Annabel Leger, Events and Volunteer Coordinator. “As a volunteer, you’ll welcome families, assist Santa in handing out gifts, and help create a joyful, memorable experience for everyone who visits. No experience is needed, just a warm smile and some festive spirit! By joining us, you’ll be helping raise vital funds to support the 90,000 children treated at the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital for Wales, each year.”
Email Annabel@noahsarkcharity.org to join the team this December.
Huggard provides essential support to Cardiff’s homeless population, and this season, they need volunteers for meal preparation, gardening, DIY, and simply offering a friendly chat. Last Christmas, Huggard served over 100 hot meals, providing warmth and companionship to those who need it most. To get involved, email volunteer@huggard.org.uk.

Small acts of kindness can make a big difference for those facing difficult times this Christmas. If you’re looking for a way to make the season more meaningful, Cardiff’s local charities have plenty of opportunities for you to get involved and spread festive cheer.
When we think of December, Christmas often comes to mind first. This festive season is filled with joy, cheer, and a sense of togetherness. However, for some, it can also bring stress, anxiety, or feelings of loneliness. Recognising the importance of mental well-being during this busy time is essential. Here are some uplifting tips from me, ‘Talk To Coco,’ to help navigate the festive season—encouraging kindness, open communication, and, above all, positivity and authenticity.
The Christmas spirit is all about compassion and giving. Engage in acts of kindness – whether it’s volunteering, helping a neighbour, participating in community events, spending time with family and friends, and doing things that make you feel whole at heart, self-love is always soul-satisfying and this can radiate towards so many people, giving them a sense of ‘I can and I will’. Kindness not only uplifts those around you but also enhances your sense of fulfilment. Remember, it’s the little gestures that can make a big difference.
Don’t hesitate to talk about your feelings during this time. It’s okay to express what you’re going through, whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or simply need someone to share the joy with. Reach
out to friends or family members and have those honest conversations. If you find it challenging to articulate your feelings, you might consider talking to someone like me, with my platform ‘Talk To Coco’, someone can come and truly open up, and I can relate to what you may be going through, always offering a listening ear and helpful honest, and uplifting insight.
Christmas is often portrayed as a flawless celebration filled with joy and perfection. However, everyone’s circumstances are different, and it’s essential to set realistic expectations for the festivities. Focus on creating meaningful moments rather than adhering to a picture-perfect narrative. Your Christmas can be unique and beautiful, in its own right. nobody’s Christmas is the same, just like us as individuals. Remember to keep the pressures off yourself and look after your mental well-being.
Amidst the Christmas preparations, don’t forget to prioritise your mental health. Allocate time for self-care activities that rejuvenate your spirit. Whether it’s reading a book, going for a walk, indulging in a warm bath, having a dance on the dancefloor, watching your favourite movie, or even a shopping trip. But do it for you or yourself. Selfcare rituals can help you maintain balance and positivity, throughout Christmas and are a powerful tool in navigating life in general. I know for myself a walk on the beach with my loved ones is all I need, to unwind and regain focus.
Capture the essence of Christmas by nurturing positivity in your daily routine. Start with gratitude – this can be done in so many ways, for example, you could journal and jot down the things you’re thankful for each day or say it out loud in the mirror and be proud. Always surround yourself with uplifting influences, be it music, literature, or something creative or even art inspired by the season. Positive affirmations can also help shift your mindset, fostering an optimistic outlook. Make sure the people around you are positive ones also, and the ones that may be feeling down or not able to find their positivity – showcase these tools, do them together, and help one another through times to the end goal of smiling and happiness.
Traditions can enhance the joy of the season, so find fun activities that resonate with you and your loved ones. Whether it’s decorating cookies together or even backing them if you’re a dab hand in the kitchen; decorating the tree; watching the classic Christmas movies, or sharing moments. You might even consider starting a new tradition focused on wellness, like a family and friends meditation session or a festive walk-in nature, or just simply writing down what everyone is grateful for, reminding us of what is important. Not everything needs to be expensive, creating stress and overwhelm.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the festive blues, anxiety, or sadness, it’s important to seek support—whether through professional help or simply talking to someone you trust. There are many resources available to assist you, with organisations like YoungMinds UK, Papyrus, Mind, and others offering 24-hour support. Remember, reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. You’re not alone in this, and you deserve care, love, and kindness.
Christmas can bring a mixed bag of emotions, but with the right people around you, and the right strategies, you can nurture your mental health & well-being and enjoy Christmas positively. Even when times are hard, anxiety can creep in, or we remember the people who are no longer with us at these times, and knowing each year can alter – we have each other and that it will be ok. So, make sure to focus on kindness, open communication, self-care, and fostering positivity. Whether you choose to share your feelings with a close friend, a helpline, or someone like myself, remember that you are not alone. With mindful efforts, you can truly find joy at Christmas time while taking care of your well-being. As you step into this festive season, 2024 - may you embrace the spirit of kindness and positivity, creating memories that warm your heart and nourish your mind. Here’s to a wonderful Christmas—filled with love, laughter, and a focus on mental health.

With Christmas 2024 fast approaching, many people are searching for the perfect way to embrace the magic of the festive season. Look no further than The Royal Mint Experience in Llantrisant, where the award-winning visitor centre has transformed into The North Pole, offering the most immersive and spectacular Christmas experience yet!
Located next to The Royal Mint’s manufacturing site in Llantrisant, The Royal Mint Experience opened its doors for the first time in 2016. Since then, the attraction has welcomed over 60,000 visitors annually, allowing guests to explore the fascinating world of coin-making, the Mint’s rich 1,100-year history – and the opportunity to strike their very own coin to take home.
The Royal Mint is one of the UK’s oldest companies dating back to the ninth century under the reign of Alfred the Great. Fast forward to the present day, the company is more than a maker of UK coins. Its businesses span collectables, investments, luxury jewellery and precious metals recovery, where they extract gold from circuit boards found in end-oflife, discarded technology.
The Royal Mint Experience has solidified its reputation as a top-tier UK attraction. Known for delivering an exceptional visitor experience, it has been honoured with several accolades over the years including the Group Leisure and Travel Awards
“Best Guided Tour” (2023 & 2024) and Trip Advisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards for five years in a row, with more than 1,400 “excellent” reviews.
“I am so proud of the team that makes The Royal Mint Experience a brilliant place to visit year after year”, comments Dan Johnson, Visitor Attraction Manager. “Our tour guides strive to make every visit a memorable one – and our awards are a testament to their dedication and passion.”
Whether you’re a local, or visiting South Wales for the first time, a visit to The Royal Mint Christmas Experience must be included on your list if you want to create unforgettable memories and lasting traditions with family and friends.
This year, Santa, Mrs Claus, and the elves have travelled to Llantrisant - with Rudolph and reindeer in tow - to move into The Royal Mint Experience and spread their memory-making magic with visitors from Saturday 23rd November 2024.
Children (under 16) have the chance to meet Santa and Mrs. Claus in their comfy and cosy grotto to share with them their wishes for Christmas Day and receive a special cuddly gift. For an extra-special memory, a new Elf-Cam captures your moments with Santa and Mrs. Claus into a personalised decoration, magnet or print.
Each year, The Royal Mint Experience transforms into a winter wonderland, attracting over 11,000 visitors every year throughout the festive period. However, this year offers a more immersive setting filled with twinkling lights, decorations and a flurry of snow.
Families can explore Santa’s workshop alongside his chief helpers and have the unique chance to strike their very own
Christmas coin featuring The Snowman, making a precious keepsake to remember their visit for years to come.
Johnson added, “Christmas is always an extraordinary time here at The Royal Mint Experience. “Our dedicated team plans for months in the lead-up to the festive season and it’s wonderful to see our transformation into the perfect backdrop for so many people’s Christmas memories. “This year’s Christmas offer will be the most immersive yet, with more interactive moments, more magic - and even more festive fun!”
After an enchanting tour of Santa’s grotto, The Royal Mint Experience Café’s special Christmas menu is the perfect antidote to hungry guests. Visitors can indulge in warm mince pies, rich hot chocolate and a range of other treats. Open until 8 pm (with hot food until 6 pm), it’s the ideal spot to unwind and soak up the festivities with your loved ones.
The Royal Mint’s Christmas Experience has been an annual fan-favourite since its opening eight years ago. This year’s festivities promise to be the most immersive and magical yet.

This Christmas sees the long-awaited return of iconic BBC comedy series Gavin & Stacey. Earlier this year, show creators James Corden and Ruth Jones confirmed that the show would be returning for one final special, which is set to reveal what Smithy’s answer to Nessa’s proposal was.
One person who is more than a little excited is Karen ‘Kaz’ Barrett, who is better known by her internet persona ‘Knock off Nessa’. Kaz is an impersonator whose full-time job is being Nessa from the hit show, a role originally played by Ruth Jones. She has thousands of followers on social media with people regularly requesting her for video messages.
In an interview with Cardiff Life Magazine, Kaz said: “My friends always used to say to me, ‘Kaz you sound like Nessa,’ and my hairdresser turned around to me one day and said, ‘If Ruth Jones
came to Barry and met you, she wrote the sitcom with you in mind.’ That’s where all this was born.”
Reflecting on the early days of her business, which has seen her collaborate with Barry Island Tours and Knights Estate Agents, she added: “I’ve been doing this full-time since February, and it’s just exploded. Everybody wants a piece of Gavin and Stacey memorabilia, and I provide all the tips on the trade they need to know about the show.
“I’ve had such an amazing response to this. I recently met a lady in her 90s who’d just come out of hospital and meeting Ruth Jones was actually on her bucket list. She drove past, saw me there in costume and got out of the car hyperventilating, crying. She couldn’t quite believe her luck. The show just touches people’s lives. I think that’s down to Ruth and James, their writing and love for Barry. Without them, none of it would be possible.”
Discussing the impact that Gavin & Stacey has had on Barry, Kaz said: “To be honest, it’s brought so much tourism to our town. Nobody ever knew where Barry was. People would always say that we were in England. Now, when they say, ‘Where you from?’, I say Barry and they go, ‘Gavin and Stacey.’ Ruth and James have put us firmly on the map.
“The writing for the show is real. Everybody knows a Ness, everyone knows a Stace, everyone knows a Bryn. And you can just relate to the stories. I’ve sort of grown into my adulthood watching it, and a lot of the stories have crossed over in my life, and everyone I speak to, they have a certain point when it crossed in their lives, and it’s helped them get through situations.”
Earlier this year, filming took place in Barry for the new episode of Gavin & Stacey with all the cast members — including Jones, Corden, Joanna Page and Mathew Horne spotted on set. Also spotted were Rob Brydon, Melanie Walters, Larry Lamb and Alison Steadman.
Gavin & Stacey follows the lives of Gavin, from Essex, and Stacey, who is from Barry Island. Their long-distance relationship, filled with hilarious misunderstandings and endearing moments, has resonated with viewers worldwide. The contrast between the two characters’ backgrounds and their families’ quirky personalities has provided endless opportunities for comedic gold.
Gavin & Stacey is set to return on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Christmas Day.
Meet Skye Dunning, a talented young musician from the South Wales Valleys who is determined to reach the top of the UK music charts this Christmas with her festive debut single, Christmas Day. At just 17, Skye dreams of creating a song that resonates with listeners of all ages and becomes a staple in Christmas playlists everywhere.
In a recent interview with Cardiff Life, Skye shared her journey in crafting the perfect festive song. She credits her inspiration to a mix of well-known guitarists, singersongwriters, and particularly her family friend, Craig, who co-wrote Christmas Day with her. Reflecting on the collaboration, Skye said: “We managed to come up with a lot of great ideas together.” Together, Skye and Craig crafted a song that intertwines timeless Christmas themes with a fresh, modern twist, capturing the Christmas spirit in a way they hope will appeal to a wide audience.
With Christmas Day, Skye wants to offer listeners more than just a catchy tune; she hopes it will become a festive favourite and inspire a moment of reflection. “It’s a reminder to be grateful for the people you get to spend the year with,” she shared. “It conveys moments that are uplifting, specific memories that make people happy.”
When discussing her musical influences, Skye noted the impact of The Christmas Song by Nat King Cole. “The violins, the gentle piano, and the beautiful melody,” she explained, were elements she sought to echo in her song. “When writing Christmas Day, we wanted the sound of the violin, a gentle melody, and to convey the story of Christmas as we imagine it in households all over the world.”
For Skye, releasing Christmas Day is not just about sharing Christmas cheer; it’s a step toward fulfilling a lifelong dream of becoming a singer. “The most exciting part about all of this is the opportunities I’ve been given since, and the opportunities that are to come… this is a dream come true for me,” she said, looking forward to the journey ahead.
This single is just the beginning for Skye. She has plans to keep the momentum going, hoping to build on the success of Christmas Day. “My plan moving forward is to record six more songs and release them on an EP in the New Year,” Skye revealed. “From there, I’m hoping my fanbase will grow, and I’ll one day be able to tour with an album.”
Skye also has some words of advice for other young musicians. “Don’t let what other people say bring you down or deter you from what you love,” she shared. For Skye, staying grounded and surrounding herself with supportive people has been crucial to her journey. “Knowing who your real companions are gets you there in the end,” she added.
Christmas Day is now available for streaming on all major platforms, and Skye is encouraging fans to stream, download, and share the song in the hopes of making it to the top of the Christmas charts. With the big day approaching, Skye is ready to bring a bit of festive magic to listeners across the UK and beyond, one note at a time.

Whitchurch’s award-winning Victoria Fish Bar is again preparing to open its doors on Boxing Day to provide free meals to the homeless, elderly and vulnerable. However, there’s more to this endeavour than first appears.
This chip shop is well-known and popular. The moment the shop doors open, eager customers are already lined up. The space pulses with the sounds of chopping ingredients and sizzling fryers, adding to the comforting, savoury aroma that fills the air and irresistibly tempts you to dive into their menu.
This family-owned chip shop in Whitchurch, Cardiff, has steadily built a remarkable business that relishes the chance to give back to the community and those in need. The owner, Muhammad Nazakat explained: “I can’t do anything without community. Community is my heart and means everything to me. My community look after me, they love me, and I love them back. I am proud of my kids, family, sons, and my staff –they are helping their community.”
In 2019, the shop took its first powerful step by offering free food to those experiencing homelessness on Christmas Day. Boxes of freshly cooked, delicious meals are set to be prepared. They include different options which include fish and chips or pie and chips with curry sauce and a drink. Yet, Muhammad and his team didn’t want to stop there.
The next year, he offered free food not just to the homeless, but to all those working on Christmas Day, such as the police, fire brigade, bus drivers, hospital workers and more. “It doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor, you can come and get some free food,” he said.
Muhammad makes it clear that the team at Victoria Fish Bar aren’t doing this for any other reason than to give back: “We do this from our hearts, and we want to do it.” In 2023, he even gifted some customers with cash from his pocket as a Christmas gift, giving away £10 each to 100 people on Boxing Day.
However, The Victoria Fish Bar does not just limit this generosity to one day a year; the shop also gives around 8-10 large meals a week to The Huggard, Wales’s leading centre for people who are homeless and sleeping rough.
The owner is very aware of Cardiff’s increasing numbers of people sleeping rough on our streets and the desperate need to help them: “There are more homeless people today. You go around the corner and four to five homeless people are sleeping there.”
In addition, going far beyond serving exceptional food, this remarkable chippy has involved the whole community. A band of volunteers has joined in, bringing gifts, clothing (both new and slightly used), socks, shoes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, women’s hygiene products, chocolates, biscuits—anything you can imagine! All these donations are delivered by these volunteers to homeless shelters across Cardiff on the very same day. They deliver to the city centre, City Road, Albany Road, Ely, Rumney, and St. Mellons. They even travel as far as Caerphilly, Pontypridd and Newport. The staff and volunteers from the community make these deliveries happen.
In the first year of their charitable venture, Victoria Fish Bar provided over 400 meals to those in need. The following year, that number rose to over 700 meals, then 800 the next, and last year, more than 900 meals were served. Their goal is to keep increasing this number every year. This keeps the shop exceptionally busy, as they must condense a typical twelvehour workday into just six hours.
Like last year, the shop will open on Boxing Day instead of Christmas Day. This decision comes after other stores followed their lead by opening on Christmas, prompting Muhammad Nazakat to choose Boxing Day as an opportunity to spread the spirit of giving a little further.
Charity store Ethical Boutique has extended its stay at St David’s Cardiff after celebrating its first year at the city shopping destination. Selling pre-loved clothing, the sustainable store is run by Cardiff charity The SAFE Foundation with all proceeds supporting deprived families and communities around the world.
Originally opening at St David’s for a one-year stint last summer, the Ethical Boutique store will now stay until 2025 with support from the centre’s owners Landsec as well as launching a new speciality coffee stand with a community purpose.
Previously, Ethical Boutique had a small mobile coffee unit where it offered closed doors weekly barista training sessions to support people in the hospitality industry. Due to the project’s success, the store has been refitted with a new purpose-built coffee stand which will open daily to serve guests. Funded by Landsec’s Futures Fund, the Conscious Coffee stand will open by Christmas, offering free barista and hospitality training while serving delicious, ethically and sustainably-sourced coffee to become a community hub. The store is also offering volunteering opportunities for people to build skills and confidence.
The SAFE Foundation Director Angie Bettany commented: “Over the past year, we have been building our community and are so happy to be staying as one of the only remaining charity shops in the city centre. People like charity shopping and enjoy the physical retail experience. Our customers love the store – it’s bright and cheerful. Being in the city centre

has been awesome for reaching new customers who didn’t know about the charity and the work we do. We’re blessed that St David’s and Landsec have sponsored us to make it possible.”
In its first year, Ethical Boutique has offered over 50 volunteering experiences and supported more than 25 people into placements with regular volunteering with 15 from the refugee and asylum-seeking community supported into placements as regular volunteers. In addition, one volunteer has progressed to shop supervisor training and, as a wheelchair user, has helped design the store to be ergonomic for wheelchairs.
Volunteer Maudlyne Gudi said: “It’s cool here, I’m so happy to be able to give back to my community. This is my first time volunteering in a charity shop and I love it. We even have coffee here and are ready to welcome customers with a smile.”
Helen Morgan, Centre Director of St David’s Cardiff, commented: “Ethical Boutique has been a unique addition to St David’s which stands out. We’re proud to be able to support such a worthy cause while offering something a little bit different to our guests when they visit.”

Since its founding in 1847, Tom Smith has been a beloved Christmas brand, steeped in tradition and known for bringing festive cheer into homes worldwide. Originating as the creator of the Christmas cracker, Tom Smith has since evolved into a global brand, encompassing all aspects of Christmas with products like gift bags, cards, and their signature crackers.
The company is deeply tied to Wales. Historically, the production of Tom Smith crackers and wrapping paper has been based in Ystrad Mynach, where the community played a vital role in crafting these festive staples. Today, while production has expanded globally, Tom Smith retains its ties to Wales.
A hallmark of the Tom Smith brand is its prestigious royal warrant, which it has held since 1906. This connection underscores the brand’s enduring legacy, as it continues to supply Christmas crackers and wrapping paper to the British royal family.
Katie Brickle, Brands Communication Manager for Tom Smith, emphasised the pride associated with this honour in an interview with Cardiff Life, saying, “We hold a royal warrant for the supply of Christmas crackers and wrapping paper, which we’ve held since 1906 and maintain to this day.”
With each new year, Tom Smith balances its rich traditions with modern innovations.
“We’re always one year in advance,” Brickle noted, explaining the brand’s planning cycle, “designing the product line for the next Christmas, ensuring it’s fresh and engaging.” Brickle revealed that Tom Smith crackers offer something for everyone, with a range of options from entry-level to premium. “In our entry-level crackers, we include games, trivia, and puzzles to encourage activity over the table,” she shared. “As the cracker gets more premium, you might find a key ring, pen, or egg cup holder set.” The variety of items reflects the brand’s emphasis on gathering loved ones around the table and creating lasting memories. “It’s about engagement with loved ones at Christmas,” she added.
For Tom Smith, the future is green. The brand has pioneered eco-friendly packaging, being the first cracker brand to remove single-use plastic from both its cracker packaging and the products inside. “We were the first to launch shrink-free wrapping paper without plastic film,” Brickle explained. “We are trying to protect the environment, ensuring that Tom Smith’s legacy is not just for today but for future generations.”
For generations, Tom Smith has been part of Christmas in countless homes, a legacy reflected in its slogan, ‘The Home of Christmas.’ Brickle sees the brand’s role as more than a provider of Christmas essentials though – it’s about creating nostalgia and lasting memories across all ages. “Most
families around a Christmas table will remember Tom Smith crackers from their childhood,” she said, adding that the brand is committed to making Christmas magic accessible to everyone, from local community centres to royal dining tables.
Beyond its iconic crackers and festive products, Tom Smith is also committed to giving back, especially during the Christmas season. Each year, the brand partners with the Trussell Trust, an organisation supporting food banks across the UK. Tom Smith makes a monetary donation for every cracker sold, helping to fund food banks that provide essentials to those in need. Additionally, the brand donates boxes of crackers directly to various food banks, ensuring that even those facing hardship can experience a touch of festive cheer.
For the past few years, Tom Smith has also supported the Huggard, Wales’ leading centre for people who are homeless and sleeping rough. “As well as offering a hot meal, they can now offer a cracker too,” Brickle explained, emphasising the importance of creating festive moments for everyone, regardless of circumstance.
With its blend of history, sustainability, and a commitment to Christmas cheer, Tom Smith remains a cherished part of Christmas celebrations, continuing to bring joy to families everywhere. Find out more at https://www.tomsmith-crackers.com/

In 2022 beloved Welsh comedian Rhod Gilbert faced a significant health challenge when he was diagnosed with head and neck cancer. The 56-year-old’s journey was documented in a Channel 4 documentary titled Rhod Gilbert: A Pain in the Neck, which received high praise.
October of 2023 saw Rhod receive the all-clear and shortly after he returned to touring with his latest show, Rhod Gilbert & The Giant Grapefruit. The show is coming to Cardiff’s Utilita Arena in 2025. Discussing his upcoming tour with Cardiff Life Magazine, Rhod said: “The show keeps evolving, keeps changing and I think I’m enjoying it more than any other show I’ve done in the past.”
As to why that is, he explained: “It’s partly just being alive and being out there and back to work. I’ve got a bit of a bounce post-cancer. I feel like I’m doing something really meaningful and important. It feels like I’m getting awareness of cancer out there. We’re raising money for Cancer Research, and Velindre on the tour, and it just feels like I’m doing something worthwhile. I want it to be funny and stand-up and every bit as funny as anything I’ve done in the past but it is about something very serious and dark.”
Rhod described how upon delving into subjects more serious than anything he’s done before, he was “really anxious”. He added: “It is a difficult subject to do stand-up about. The response to my documentary and the response to the humour in it was so positive that it gave me a bit of confidence going in to do stand up about cancer. I was still apprehensive, you know, and I still make a big deal in the show about, you know, a sort of trigger warning going, ‘Look, I’m going to be going there. I’m going to be talking about cancer.’
“I’ve got cancer patients in the audience, I’ve got people looking after cancer patients, families of cancer patients. I’ve got people who’ve lost people to cancer, possibly very recently. I’ve had people who have lost people that week and have still come to the show.
“I’m trying to empower people, and I’m trying to spread the word. I was nervous about it, but the overwhelming response, especially from cancer patients and their families, is so positive that gives me the confidence to carry on doing it.”
Rhod’s cancer, head and neck, is the eighth most common form of cancer overall in the UK. About 12,500 new cases are diagnosed each year, according to Cancer Research UK. About 4,000 people die from it annually.
The comedian, who was born in Carmarthen, described connecting with his audience as a “shared experience”. He elaborated: “In the
show [cancer] is a shared experience. Having said that, it’s a shared experience as a society because it’s everywhere. It touches virtually everybody so hopefully this show is something that everyone can relate to. This is not just a stand-up show, it’s therapy for cancer patients and families.”
Despite his excitement to return to the stage, Rhod admitted that it was far from his “end goal” during his cancer journey. Instead, he said his end goal was to “get through it hour by hour”. “I had initial surgery and then started chemo and radiotherapy every day, and it was a question of getting through the next few minutes or the next hour or the next couple of hours,” he said. “To be honest with you it was about, ‘How am I going to go to the toilet? How am I going to eat? How am I going to get upstairs? How am I going to get to the hospital today?’
“I didn’t write a word of stand-up the whole time. It didn’t occur to me to do stand-up again. No, you’re just getting through it. You’re just focused on, not so much surviving, but getting through the next hour, getting through the next half-an-hour.”
Following his ordeal Rhod said he has been surprised to learn that he is far more “positive” than he initially thought. “I don’t see myself as a very positive, glass-full sort of person. Having said that, if you look at the facts — which is that I’m on stage doing a really, hopefully funny, uplifting show about cancer, then I guess I must be…”
Tickets are now available for Rhod Gilbert & The Giant Grapefruit, which is at Cardiff’s Utilita Arena on April 25 & 26, 2025.
