A MILESTONE MOMENT
SOPHIA GARDENS AND THE FUTURE OF WOMEN’S CRICKET
July 28, 2024, will be remembered as a landmark day for cricket, marked by Welsh Fire’s opening home match of The Hundred’s women’s competition at Sophia Gardens. This historic game not only captivated fans but also set a new attendance record with over 7,271 enthusiastic spectators. This remarkable turnout highlights the growing interest and success of women’s cricket, underscoring a significant advancement toward greater gender equality and recognition in sports, a development that has been steadily gaining momentum in recent years.
The Hundred’s innovative 100-ball format has provided a dynamic and engaging platform for cricketers, drawing a wider audience and showcasing the immense talent of female players. Designed to be fast-paced and exciting, this format has proven to be an ideal stage for displaying the impressive skills and dynamism of players such as Tammy Beaumont and Shabnim Ismail.
The enthusiastic crowd at Sophia Gardens reflects a broader shift in public perception and support for women’s sports, indicating a positive trend toward increased visibility, recognition, and respect for female athletes.
A standout story from this year’s competition was Welsh Fire’s women’s team impressive journey to the final against London Spirit. After finishing 8th in both 2021 and 2022 and improving to 3rd place in 2023, Welsh Fire’s ascent to the runners-up position in 2024 is a testament to their resilience, skill, and determination. Key players like Beaumont and Ismail played pivotal roles in the team’s remarkable progress, capturing the imagination of fans and setting the stage for another thrilling and competitive campaign next year.
In addition to the excitement on the field, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced a major overhaul of the domestic women’s cricket structure. Beginning in 2025, the revamped system will introduce Tier 2 and Tier 3 divisions, expanding opportunities for teams across the country. Tier 2 will include ten counties: Derbyshire, Glamorgan, Gloucestershire, Kent, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Middlesex, Sussex, Worcestershire, and Yorkshire. These teams will compete in both 50-over and 20-over formats, with further details on the competition structure and schedule to be released soon, creating anticipation among players and fans alike.
This restructuring represents a significant step forward, providing a more robust platform for emerging talent and fostering greater competition within the sport. The ECB’s initiative aligns with the growing momentum in women’s cricket, driven by recent high-profile events and increasing fan engagement, which are helping to transform the sport into a major force.
The history of women’s cricket, which began over a century ago with informal matches and small tournaments, has evolved dramatically over the decades. From the first women’s Test match in 1934 to the present day, the sport has made significant strides, breaking barriers and gaining widespread recognition for the talent and dedication of its players. The success of events like the one at Sophia Gardens and the forthcoming domestic restructuring reflect the sport’s progress and the promise of an even brighter future ahead.
As women’s cricket continues to gain visibility, recognition, and support, the future holds great promise. The excitement generated by recent events and the strategic changes announced by the ECB underscore a growing commitment to enhancing opportunities, fostering a more inclusive sporting landscape, and ensuring that women’s cricket continues to thrive on the global stage.

In a groundbreaking initiative, Qualifications Wales is embarking on an ambitious journey to redefine secondary education in Wales. As part of their visionary ‘Qualified for the Future’ project, the WJEC (Welsh Joint Education Committee) is set to develop 28 new Made-for-Wales GCSEs. This transformative project will unfold across three meticulously planned phases over the next three years, ensuring a seamless integration of innovative educational standards that align with the dynamic needs of modern learners.
In collaboration with a diverse array of stakeholders, including educators, industry experts, and community leaders, WJEC is dedicated to crafting a new suite of GCSEs that promise to be inclusive, engaging, and future-ready. The initiative aims to foster a curriculum that not only supports academic excellence but also cultivates the essential skills needed in an ever-evolving global landscape.
The ambitious endeavour began with the publication of the Decisions Report and Approval Criteria by Qualifications Wales, outlining the foundational principles for the new qualifications. This has set the stage for WJEC’s Qualification Development Team to engage actively with stakeholders, ensuring that the resulting qualifications are both inspiring and innovative, tailored to meet the unique needs of learners in Wales.
The first phase of this educational renaissance will see the introduction of new GCSEs, with teaching commencing in September 2025. Among the subjects to be introduced are Art and Design, Business, Computer Science, and various languages, including Core Cymraeg and Cymraeg Language and Literature. These subjects are designed to provide a robust and holistic educational experience, preparing students for the challenges of the future.
As part of their commitment to excellence, WJEC has made draft specifications for the initial wave of GCSEs available. The final approved versions will be published in September, followed by a comprehensive assessment pack in December. This pack will include detailed assessment arrangements and sample materials, ensuring that educators are well-equipped to deliver the new curriculum. Additionally, Guidance for Teaching will be released in January, offering educators the support they need to adapt to these innovative changes.
Phases two and three will introduce further exciting subjects such as Digital Media and Film, Engineering, and British Sign Language, with new teaching commencing in 2026 and 2027, respectively. This phased approach ensures a thoughtful and systematic roll-out, allowing for continuous feedback and refinement.
Qualifications Wales and WJEC’s forward-thinking approach heralds a new era in Welsh education. By placing learners at the heart of this transformation, they are not only preparing students for academic success but also equipping them with the skills to thrive in an everchanging world.

THE 10 TH ANNIVERSARY OF DEPOT CARDIFF
The DEPOT started life as a pop-up street food venue, after being granted a temporary threemonth licence in late 2014. It was the brainchild of then 23-year-old Nicholas Saunders, who later gained planning permission for the site to stay open for a further four years.
Despite three relocations in ten years, DEPOT is now one of Cardiff’s most beloved entertainment venues. Its industrial charm and independence make it a hub for some of the city’s most exciting events.
DEPOT in the Castle, Cardiff’s annual homegrown festival, is known for its dynamic line-ups and iconic Cardiff Castle setting. Now in its seventh year, it’s presented by DEPOT Live, the live-events arm of The DEPOT, which brought 55 acts to the city centre this summer, drawing 170,000 people through the castle gates.
Here we chat to DEPOT founder Nick Saunders about a decade of DEPOT and his plans for the future…
Can you take us back to the beginning? What inspired you initially?
“Back in Liverpool where I’m from, there’s the Baltic Triangle, an area home to numerous different warehouse venues. Camp & Furnace was the main one, but also Constellations, Kitchen Street and Cains Brewery. When I moved to Cardiff for uni, I tried to find somewhere like that here – but there was nothing similar. Eventually, I decided that I’d have to create it myself, so once I’d graduated, I started looking for an empty warehouse or industrial unit that I could transform.
I found a 24,000-square-foot abandoned warehouse on Dumballs Rd and knew it would work for what I wanted. I’d spent four years of my spare time at university organising successful club nights; I figured transforming this empty warehouse would be my next challenge. I didn’t anticipate just how much work it would be!”
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced in the early days?
“There were lots of repairs and regulatory things that needed addressing, like ensuring we had proper fire escapes, licensees, planning, noise management etc. I remember it took four whole days just to paint the floors grey, and it’s not like there was a budget for a team of contractors or anything like that at the beginning.
It was also quite a challenge to get the local authorities on board. The idea of inviting a thousand people into a warehouse on Dumballs Road for a street food market seemed like a very alien concept back then! But we got there in the end.
Peter Cro joining the business in 2015 added a huge wealth of operational experience which has been fundamental to our growth since those early days.”
How has the vision for DEPOT evolved over the past decade?
“We started as a street food venue and 2014 was a time when that was the really big thing. People just wanted good street food and a great bar and that was their night sorted. Tastes have changed since then and people are looking for far more varied and interesting ways to spend their leisure time, and luckily, our venue’s chameleonic nature is perfect for that.
At our current site, we now boast a max capacity of 2,100 guests, 30,000 sq ft of flexible space (including a smaller room for more intimate events) and three permanent street-food kitchens based inside 20 ft shipping containers, so we can adapt to accommodate everything from club nights, food and drink festivals and full-scale live music events, to corporate functions, charity dinners and anything in-between.”
DEPOT Live has become a summer staple, filling the castle with live music. How did the idea for DEPOT Live come about?
“Before starting DEPOT, it was always a dream of mine to host events at Cardiff Castle. It’s such an iconic venue that creates an amazing atmosphere for events. I feel very fortunate to be able to organise events there and have had plenty of pinch-myself moments over the last few years.”
What have been some standout performances or moments from DEPOT Live events over the years?
“As a group, we’ve had many experiences that have meant so much to various people. From screening the night that Wales beat Belgium in the Euros, to the creation of BINGO LINGO and our smash-hit Peaky Blinders-themed events! My standout moment was our sold-out Foals show at Cardiff Castle the week after all COVID restrictions were lifted. We weren’t even sure if the event would go ahead, but the energy and expressions on people’s faces are something I’ll remember forever.
Oh, and the three sell-out nights with Sir Tom Jones last year - they weren’t bad either!”
As you celebrate the 10th anniversary this month, are there any new projects or expansions on the horizon that you can share with us?
“We have exciting plans for much more live music at DEPOT in Q4 of this year and into 2025 and whenever possible, we want to emphasise local and homegrown talent at our shows.
We also did some huge numbers at the Castle this summer with DEPOT Live; welcoming 170,000 people through the gates to enjoy live music in the Welsh sunshine – but we’re not resting on our laurels. Plans are already afoot to make 2025 even bigger and better!”

GET THE INSIDE SCOOP
As one-half of the dynamic duo behind The Posh Fish and Chip Company, Laura Davenport has brought a fresh and exciting addition to Barry Island. At the end of June this year, she unveiled Scoop, a trendy ice cream, cake and coffee shop that has quickly become a haven for tourists, beachgoers and dog walkers alike.
Barry Island, often known for its lively atmosphere, Gavin and Stacey fame and a touch of brashness, now has an oasis in the form of Scoop. With its retro ice cream parlour vibes and a modern twist, Scoop is the perfect spot for coffee catch-ups with friends, mum and baby get-togethers, or ice creams for the kids. It’s also ideal for those looking to ‘work from home’, in a cosy and inviting space.
“I’m extremely proud to collaborate with local Welsh brands,” Laura shared. Scoop’s coffee is sourced from The Barry Island Coffee Company, owned by Gareth King, with beans roasted just a few miles away. Their Welsh Mountain Blend is served in-house and available for purchase. The mouth-watering cakes are made fresh throughout the week by Scoop’s in-house baker, Frances Cakes and Laura’s mum, known by locals as ‘Mama Davs.’
Scoop boasts up to 20 different ice cream flavours, including sorbets and plant-based options. From kid-friendly ‘Unicorn’ to more sophisticated choices like ‘Pistachio,’ ‘Rum and Raisin’ and ‘Prosecco,’ there’s something for everyone. The shop also serves fresh sandwiches daily and offers a unique take on traditional brunch with its loaded hash browns.
Laura’s journey from a corporate career at Dyson to becoming the ice cream and coffee queen of Barry Island is nothing short of inspiring. Transitioning from her role as a Project and Programme Manager in large-scale corporations, she leapt into hospitality alongside her life and business partner, Hamid Kowsor. Together, they’ve grown The Posh Fish and Chip Company by thinking outside the box. Their journey began with buying and renovating a giant food truck, catering to the demand for high-quality fish and chips at food festivals and events. In their first year, they’ve already made a splash, serving 25,000 hungry event attendees at occasions like Glamorgan Cricket, Street Food Circus and most recently, the Greenman Festival.
So, what’s next for the Scoop and Posh Fish and Chips duo? Big plans are on the horizon to unite both brands. After all, what could be better than enjoying fish and chips and ice cream by the sea?

– Fill your chilled glass with fresh ice cubes.
– Strain the gin and citrus mixture into the ice-filled glass.
– Top up with 150-200ml of tonic water.

– Give the drink a gentle stir to combine all the flavours. Serve immediately and enjoy!
The Vida Picante Fresh, Zesty, Fiery
This original creation marries the zestiness of a margarita with the sophistication of a gimlet. Experience a delightful hint of vegetal spice combined with the botanicals of Toca Vida, balanced by the sweetness of agave and succulent citrus, delivering a refreshing taste of summer straight to your glass. For an adventurous twist, consider enhancing the spicy flavour profile with a rim of zesty Tajin seasoning, or perhaps smoked salt.
Recipe:
50ml Toca Vida Gin
20ml Lime juice
20ml Agave syrup
Pinch of Maldon rock salt
1 slice of red chilli, muddled if you like it spicy
Directions:
– Fill your glass with ice to chill.
– Add all ingredients to your cocktail shaker and stir to dissolve agave syrup.
– Fill your shaker with cubed ice, seal and give a vigorous shake.
– Your cocktail is shaken to perfection when your tin starts to form frost on the outside.

– Garnish with a slice of fresh chilli.

Cardiff's Historic Market Getting a Revamp
Cardiff’s iconic Central Market, a cherished Victorian-era landmark, is set for a grand £6.5 million transformation. Starting in 2024, the restoration project, fully funded through various sources, promises to rejuvenate this bustling hub of independent businesses and cultural heritage.
The Central Market, with its 130-year history, has secured a total of £6.5 million for a major overhaul. Cardiff Council managed to acquire the final £3.1 million from the Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns programme, complementing the £2.1 million grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Additional funding comes from the Shared Prosperity Fund and direct council investment.
Restoration deeds
The approved plans include restoring original Victorian features, repairing the iconic glass roof, and enhancing the traditional entrances and stalls. Modern updates will see
the installation of energy-efficient LED lighting and roofmounted solar panels, aligning with the Welsh Government’s decarbonisation goals.
In addition to historical restorations, the market will introduce a new 70-seat eating area, an activity and education room, and improved drainage systems. The H.Samuel market clock will be meticulously repaired, and the 1960s ‘false floor’ at the Trinity Street entrance will be removed to reveal original design elements.
Council Leader Huw Thomas emphasised the importance of preserving the market’s unique atmosphere while enhancing its facilities. ‘Our restoration plans will preserve and protect that history and ensure that it remains the bustling heart of the city that we all know and love, for many years to come,’ he said.
To minimise disruption, the market will remain open during the phased restoration, with temporary relocations for some traders. This approach ensures that the market continues to serve its 61 independent businesses and loyal customers
throughout the renovation period. Notably, rents will stay at their pre-pandemic levels, providing stability for the traders.
Broader Impacts
Welsh Government Climate Change Minister Julie James highlighted the project’s contribution to the local economy and sustainability. ‘Cardiff Market is a vital asset which significantly adds to the region’s shopping, visitor and cultural experience,’ she noted. The renovation will boost footfall, support small businesses, and enhance the overall city centre experience, ensuring that this historic market continues to be a vibrant part of Cardiff’s community life.
As Cardiff prepares for this significant restoration, the excitement is palpable. The market’s transformation promises to blend the charm of its Victorian heritage with the conveniences of modern amenities, making it a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists. The revitalised Central Market is poised to continue its legacy as a cornerstone of Cardiff’s cultural and commercial landscape.

FareShare Cymru delivers surplus, good-to-eat food that might otherwise go to waste to charities and community groups in every corner of Wales. Today FareShare Cymru has distributed tonnes of surplus food to a network of groups and organisations across Wales that provide food and other essential services to people in need.

FARESHARE CYMRU
EMPOWERING BUSINESSES TO COMBAT FOOD WASTE
Around 400,000 tonnes of food goes to waste in Wales each year, much of it still good to eat. If just 1% of that was saved, it could be used to provide over 9 million meals — enough to provide three meals to every person in Wales. Simultaneously, a quarter of the population of Wales is facing poverty and struggling to access quality, nutritious food. Thousands of people across the country are experiencing food insecurity and are regularly going hungry.
To help address the growing issue of food waste whilst helping communities and people in need, the Surplus with Purpose Cymru fund was launched by FareShare Cymru. We recognise that the impact of rising costs has made it harder for Welsh food businesses of all sizes to operate. This fund supports Welsh producers, growers and manufacturers of all sizes to contribute their surplus, edible goods without incurring additional costs.
To keep supporting the work of local community groups and charities across Wales, we want to work with the food industry to make use of their surplus food. Whether you are a large producer or a small farm, there are opportunities to contribute surplus food to those who need it most. By partnering with FareShare Cymru, food businesses can make a real impact on reducing food waste and supporting vulnerable communities.

Embracing Organic September
A Celebration of Nature and Sustainability
Organic September is an annual campaign that highlights the importance of organic farming and its benefits to nature, health, and the climate. Organised by UK Organic, this month-long event encourages individuals and communities to make planet-positive choices by incorporating organic products into their daily lives.
Organic farming works harmoniously with nature, supporting healthier soils, abundant wildlife, and a more sustainable planet. Organic September invites everyone, whether already familiar with organic products or new to them, to make small yet impactful changes. From swapping conventional fruits and vegetables for organic ones to exploring organic textiles and beauty products, every choice contributes to a larger environmental benefit. Meanwhile, for businesses and organisations in the organic industry, the initiative offers a platform to promote their products and practices.
Organic September is not just about promoting organic products but also about fostering a deeper connection with nature and making conscious choices that benefit the planet. By participating in this movement, individuals can contribute to soil health, wildlife wellbeing, and a better future for the planet.
As we embrace Organic September, let’s make small changes that lead to significant impacts, supporting nature, reducing exposure to pesticides, and enjoying food and products in their purest form. Together, we can make a difference, one organic choice at a time. Join the campaign and celebrate a month dedicated to a healthier, more sustainable world.

WHY CHOOSE THE TAP END?
Before taking the plunge on a new bathroom, there are some important questions that need to be considered. Having a designer on board during your project can help navigate your way through these choices and ultimately assist you in making better decisions for your home and new room!
GLOSS VERSUS MATT
Do you prefer an ultra-smooth, shiny gloss finish? Or a minimalist, low maintenance matt surface?
Tiles, sanitaryware, brassware and vanity units all come with multiple colour and finish choices, gone are the days of just white and just chrome! A gloss finish is perfect to reflect light around a room, making it appear larger than it is. It has a similar effect to a mirror, opening the space and providing a more glamours feel. Unlike gloss, matt surfaces are more forgiving, they are a better option to conceal water marks, smudges or dirt. Matt finishes can feel less stark and create a more natural look. Are designers can give you all the top tips when it comes to selecting finishes for your home.
SHOWER VERSUS BATH
We are often asked if taking a bath out of a home will devalue it when it comes to selling. The honest answer is that unless you are doing the bathroom for a quick sell, you should go for what is right for you. Showers are quick and convenient when you have limited time. They are a great choice for accessibility and future proofing. Showers have an advantage when it comes to water consumption and are a more hygienic choice. 59% of Brits revealed they prefer a shower over a bath in a 2024 UK survey. Whilst a shower has benefits, you can’t beat the look of a freestanding bath. It promotes relaxation and does wonders for your health; it is the perfect way to unwind after a stressful day. It is also a better option for young families. Talking through the pros and cons with a designer can help you decide on the right choice for you.
REAL WOOD VERSUS FAUX
Whilst there is nothing like the real thing, real wood does not stand the test of time in busy, moist environments, so faux alternatives will stand the test of time whilst being more cost effective. Natural wood offers unmatched beauty, and textured wood grain that faux cannot but you will need to keep a beady eye on it to make sure that it is always dry, as any water marks can leave lasting damage.
COLOUR VERSUS NEUTRAL
The unanswerable question... A neutral bathroom lends itself to most styles, weather you are planning a rusting, classic or ultra-modern look, neutral will always be a timeless choice. However, colourful bathrooms are making a resurgence, with homeowners expressing their personality through their interiors. Make sure when picking colours, you opt for something that you love and don’t follow the current trends. A good way to add colour to your space without fully committing is to pick playful accessories or painted walls.

As the leaves begin to change and a crispness fills the air, autumn emerges as a captivating season for outdoor entertaining. In Cardiff, the rich hues of autumn provide a stunning backdrop for a luxurious garden party. Whether celebrating a special occasion or simply enjoying the beauty of the season with friends and family, there are so many ways to elevate your outdoor gathering. Here’s a guide to designing an unforgettable autumn garden party, complete with seasonal decorations, gourmet food and drink pairings featuring local Welsh produce, and tips for creating cosy outdoor spaces.
Setting the scene: seasonal decorations
Autumn’s natural beauty offers a wealth of inspiration for decorations. Create an inviting atmosphere in your garden by starting with the basics: lighting and foliage. String fairy lights or lanterns through trees and along pathways to add a magical glow as the sun sets.
Outdoor Entertaining
Creating the Perfect Autumn Garden Party in Cardiff
You can also incorporate the vibrant colours of autumn by using seasonal foliage. Arrange bouquets of chrysanthemums, dahlias, and marigolds in rich reds, oranges, and yellows. Complement these with greenery like ivy or eucalyptus for added texture. Pumpkins, gourds, and squash in various sizes and shapes make excellent table centrepieces and can be painted in metallic hues for a sophisticated twist.
Gourmet food and drink pairings
A luxurious garden party demands equally impressive cuisine. Embrace the flavours of autumn with a menu that highlights local Welsh produce. Start with canapés like Welsh rarebit bites, made with a blend of strong Welsh cheddar and ale, served on crisp crostini. Another delightful option is laverbread blinis topped with smoked salmon and a dollop of crème fraîche.
For the main course, consider a hearty roast. A slow-cooked lamb shoulder, seasoned with rosemary and garlic, can be the star of the show. Serve it alongside seasonal vegetables such as roasted root vegetables and braised red cabbage, which add both colour and flavour to the meal. A vegetarian option could include a savoury mushroom and leek pie, showcasing the earthy flavours of local produce.
Dessert should be a celebration of autumn’s bounty. A classic apple tart, made with locally sourced apples, can be elevated with a drizzle of locally sourced honey and a sprinkling of sea salt. Alternatively, a rich, dark chocolate torte garnished with fresh berries and a dusting of powdered sugar can provide a decadent end to the meal.
Pair your gourmet fare with drinks that enhance the autumnal vibe. Start with a warming mulled cider, infused with cinnamon, cloves, and star anise. For a sophisticated touch, offer a selection of Welsh gins and craft beers. A sparkling mead, made from local honey, can also be a delightful and unique choice.
Cosy outdoor spaces
Comfort is key when hosting an outdoor event in the cooler months. Create warm, inviting spaces with thoughtful accessories; for instance, you can use outdoor rugs to define areas and add a layer of warmth underfoot.
Fire pits are essential for an autumn garden party. They not only provide warmth but also create a focal point for guests to gather around. Choose a stylish, well-designed fire pit that complements your garden’s aesthetic. For an extra touch of luxury, consider gas-powered fire tables with built-in seating. Blankets and throws in soft, rich fabrics like cashmere or wool are perfect for keeping guests cosy as the evening chill sets in. Provide an array of options in a basket or draped over seating for easy access. Complement the blankets with an assortment of plush cushions in autumnal colours and patterns.
You can further enhance the cosy atmosphere by incorporating elements like outdoor heaters and windbreaks. Easily movable furniture such as decorative screens can help shield your guests from brisk winds while adding visual interest to the space.
Final touches
No garden party is complete without some thoughtful final touches. Create a welcoming entrance with a seasonal wreath on the garden gate or door. Provide guests with personalised name cards at their seating or individual favours like small jars of homemade chutney or local honey.
Music can also elevate the ambience of your party. Curate a playlist with a mix of upbeat tunes and mellow tracks that suit the mood of the evening.
By embracing the beauty of autumn and the richness of Welsh produce, you can create a luxurious and memorable garden party in Cardiff. With careful planning and attention to detail, your guests will be enchanted by the seasonal décor, gourmet delights, and cosy atmosphere, ensuring a celebration that’s both stylish and heartwarming.

Mid Wales Shines Among Top Five UK Staycation Havens
In an increasingly noisy world, finding a peaceful retreat can be challenging. However, new data reveals that Mid Wales, with its picturesque landscapes and serene ambience, proudly claims the fifth spot on the list of the UK’s quietest staycation spots, according to the latest CIEH Noise Survey.
The serene standings
The data, meticulously compiled by bedroom furnishings experts Bed Kingdom, utilised information from the latest CIEH Noise Surveys for England and Wales, DAERA Noise Complaint Statistics for Northern Ireland, and Noise Nuisance data. This comprehensive approach has highlighted the UK’s most tranquil regions, ideal for those seeking a quiet escape.
South West England’s dominance in this ranking is underscored by West Somerset, which boasts an average of under 1 noise complaint per 1,000 people. With popular tourist destinations like The English Riviera, Cornwall, and Devon, this region perfectly balances natural beauty and tranquillity.
West Northern Ireland follows as the second most serene area, with 2.95 complaints per 1,000 residents. Renowned for its expansive rural beauty, landmarks such as the Sperrin Mountains, the Ulster American Folk Park, Lough Erne, and the Marble Arch Caves make it a haven of peace.
Third place is claimed by North Wales, with 3.18 complaints per 1,000 people. This region is famous for Eryri National Park (Snowdonia) and its highest peak, Yr Wyddfa (Mount Snowdon). The Llyn Peninsula’s stunning coastlines and Anglesey, with its minimal noise complaints, offer serene getaways.
South Northern Ireland ranks fourth, with 3.21 complaints per 1,000 people. This region, characterised by rolling hills, lush farmland, and serene lakes, features notable attractions like Slieve Gullion Forest Park and Lough Neagh. Newry and Mourne stand out as the quietest area here.
Mid Wales: a tranquil escape
Mid Wales, with its enchanting landscapes and low noise levels, emerges as the fifth most peaceful staycation destination in the UK. Known as the green heart of Wales, this region boasts pure seas, vibrant harbours, and secluded coves along the Ceredigion coastline.
Ashley Hainsworth from Bed Kingdom reflects on the importance of these findings: ‘Consistent exposure to noise can significantly impair a person’s quality of life, leading to a range of health issues, including stress, fatigue, and decreased cognitive function. One of the top reasons for going away on holiday is to escape the noise, stresses and hardships of daily life. Looking at noise pollution is essential for finding restful holiday destinations where individuals can unwind and rejuvenate.’

THE BRISTOL LUXURIOUS PARISIAN-STYLE ESCAPE
Recently, we decided to indulge in a little escape from Cardiff and ventured across the Severn Bridge to Bristol. With just a hop, skip, and a jump away – or more precisely, about an hour’s drive – Bristol offers a delightful change of scenery without the fuss of a long journey. My destination? The Bristol, a Doyle Collection hotel which has recently undergone a stunning transformation. Spoiler alert: it was worth every mile.
Perched along the beautiful waterfront, The Bristol offers an ideal base for exploring the city’s vibrant culture. Just a short stroll away from iconic landmarks, museums and music venues, it’s perfect for those looking to dive into Bristol’s rich artistic scene. The hotel’s interiors are a stunning blend of sleek, modern minimalism and touches of grandeur, creating a space that is both chic and full of character. This luxurious home away from home delivers ultimate comfort and style, all with a contemporary flair.
From the moment I stepped into the lobby, I was transported back in time. The vintage-inspired setting, complete with a 1930s Murano chandelier and mirror-lined walls, immediately sets the tone. The lobby feels like the grand entrance to a luxurious ocean liner, and it’s clear that every detail has been meticulously curated to evoke a sense of timeless sophistication.
We stayed in one of the newly renovated guest rooms, and it was a beautiful mix of comfort and style. The room was bathed in natural light, with soft neutral tones accented by rich pops of colour. The view of the bustling harbourside below was the cherry on top – a perfect blend of tranquillity and vibrant city life.
When it came to dining, The Bristol did not disappoint. For dinner, I made my way to The River Grille, an elegant
restaurant that feels like a slice of Parisian charm right on the canal. The floor-to-ceiling windows and lush greenery create an inviting space, perfect for indulging in the menu’s local produce. The Josper grill added a smoky richness to the dishes and the vegan and organic wine list was a pleasant surprise. The Sunday roast here is a must-try, making it a perfect spot for weekend lunch or dinner.
One evening, I found myself at Rick’s, a cocktail bar that’s as unique as it is glamorous. Overhead wicker lighting and lush greenery gave it an almost tropical feel, while the candle-lit charm made it an ideal spot for both quiet drinks and lively catch-ups. The signature cocktails were sensational, and the waterside location meant I could sip my drink while watching the world – and the water – go by.
In short, The Bristol embodies a unique blend of design, sustainability, art, food, drink and culture. Whether you’re in town for a leisurely weekend escape or a business trip, it promises an unforgettable stay. The proximity to Cardiff makes it an easy and delightful getaway – just an hour’s drive and you’re in a different world.
Next time you’re yearning for a change of scenery without the hassle of a long journey, consider crossing the bridge to The Bristol. It’s a perfect blend of vintage charm and modern comfort, nestled in the vibrant heartbeat of Bristol’s harbourside. Trust me, you’ll leave with a new appreciation for our neighbouring city and a longing to return.

Experience the Magic of Sŵ n Festival Cardiff's Beloved Music Discovery Event
Prepare to immerse yourself in a sonic wonderland as the award-winning Sŵn Festival returns to Cardiff between 17 and 19 October 2024.
Celebrated for its diverse and innovative line-up, this year’s festival promises an exhilarating experience for music lovers. Taking place across multiple venues in the Welsh capital, Sŵn Festival continues to set the tone for music discovery events, offering an eclectic mix of genres and a vibrant atmosphere.
Sŵn Festival, founded by Huw Stephens in 2007, is renowned for its commitment to showcasing emerging talent alongside established artists. Since 2018, the festival has been expertly managed by the team at Clwb Ifor Bach, ensuring a seamless and unforgettable experience for attendees. This year, Sŵn proudly partners with the inaugural Cardiff Music City Festival, a three-week celebration of music innovation, performance, and technology, further elevating the festival’s appeal.
The first wave of artists announced for the 2024 edition includes a stellar line-up of local and international acts. Highlights include the gritty garage-rock and pop sensibilities of Cardiff’s own Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard, the Welshlanguage indie-rock of Adwaith, and the harmonic pop-rave sounds of Das Koolies, featuring members of the legendary Super Furry Animals. Rising stars Half Happy and Pys Melyn, who have already garnered critical acclaim, will also grace the stages, bringing their unique sounds to eager audiences.
In addition to the Welsh talent, the festival will feature Brixton-born punk and hip-hop artist Wu-Lu, whose anarchic spirit promises to electrify the streets of Cardiff. English Teacher’s blend of emo-rock, dream-pop, and psychedelia is set to captivate festival-goers, while Hannah Diamond, the internet’s original pop princess, will offer a dazzling exploration of girlhood and stardom.
For the first time since the pandemic, Sŵn Festival will be fully multi-venue across all three days, offering an even more extensive
itinerary for new music enthusiasts. Thursday’s festivities will take over Womanby Street with stages at Clwb Ifor Bach, Tiny Rebel, The Moon, and Fuel. On Friday and Saturday, the festival expands to additional iconic venues across Cardiff city centre, including Tramshed, Jacobs Antique Market, Cornerstone, and Porter’s.
Adam Williams, live manager at Sŵn, expressed his excitement: ‘This year’s event will be slightly different… with over 130 artists performing across 11 different stages. We’re also in the process of finalising some exciting guests, stage partners and the return of our industry conference – details of which we’ll be able to share with you soon. Finally, and most importantly, this year’s event will be a key partner within the inaugural Cardiff Music City Festival; a three-week, city-wide celebration of music in Cardiff this autumn.’
Sŵn Festival’s dedication to inclusivity and accessibility is evident in their introduction of payment plans, concession tickets, and increased opportunities for community involvement through volunteer programs and an ‘apply to play’ scheme. This year’s event aims to be more accessible than ever, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the magic of Sŵn. Over the years, Sŵn has been a launchpad for many of today’s biggest names in contemporary music, including Sam Fender, Wolf Alice, Ben Howard, The Vaccines, and Annie Mac. This year’s festival promises to continue this legacy, nurturing the next generation of musical stars.

Welsh National Opera Announces Spectacular Autumn 2024 Season
Welsh National Opera (WNO) is set to enchant audiences this autumn with a lineup that promises to deliver drama, passion, and unforgettable musical experiences. This season features the directorial debut of Adele Thomas in Verdi’s Rigoletto, the return of Natalya Romaniw in Puccini’s Il trittico, and the beloved Opera Favourites concert, which this year spotlights Opera at the Movies
Rigoletto
The highlight of the season is Verdi’s Rigoletto, directed by Port Talbot-born Adele Thomas. Known for her remarkable work in opera and music theatre, Thomas makes her WNO directorial debut with this gripping tale of love, betrayal, and the ruthless court of the Duke of Mantua. The production, conducted by Pietro Rizzo, is a vibrant exploration of Verdi’s acclaimed opera, featuring timeless arias like La donna è mobile and the famous quartet Bella figlia dell’amore. Set designs are crafted by the European Opera Prize winner Annemarie Woods, creating a visually stunning backdrop for this emotional drama.
Il trittico Suor Angelica & Gianni Schicchi
Opera Favourites
Adele expressed her excitement, saying, ‘Rigoletto is a brutal stare into human darkness. As a work of drama, it rivals the work of Shakespeare and Racine for its deep humanity and devasting storytelling. The music is magnificent from start to finish. We want to make a production that draws on Verdi’s love of the Shakespearean stage and the fire of his politics. It is a thrill to finally be making work at home in Wales. WNO is where I first fell in love with opera, and it is an honour to be creating this work there.’
Rigoletto premieres in Cardiff on 21 September, before touring to Llandudno, Plymouth, Oxford, and Southampton.
Puccini’s triptych Il trittico returns to Cardiff’s Wales Millennium Centre, conducted by Alexander Joel. This trio of one-act operas, including Il tabarro, Suor Angelica, and Gianni Schicchi, showcases the versatility and depth of Puccini’s work.
Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi will tour as a double bill alongside Rigoletto to in October and November. Audiences in Oxford will enjoy a concert performance of all three operas on 25 October.
Conductor Alexander Joel shared his enthusiasm, stating, ‘Il trittico is in my opinion one the greatest works written – three incredible operas, all with different musical and emotional colours that never fail to fascinate the audience. I can’t wait to return to WNO again, especially with music from Puccini, my favourite opera composer.’
The WNO Orchestra and Chorus will captivate audiences once again with Opera Favourites, featuring the theme Opera at the Movies. This concert includes popular arias and songs from films such as Pretty Woman, The Shawshank Redemption, and Quantum of Solace, alongside classics like Largo al factotum from The Barber of Seville and Te Deum from Tosca These performances will be held in Llandudno, Plymouth, and Southampton.
In a special collaboration, the WNO Orchestra will also perform at Bristol Beacon, accompanying Netflix’s Life on Our Planet in Concert. This immersive experience combines stunning visuals from the acclaimed natural history series with a live soundtrack performed by the WNO Orchestra.

Keeping Cardiff Safe
The summer might be coming to an end, but as an entertainment hub, Cardiff never stops buzzing with excitement. Amid the fervour, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of residents and visitors remains paramount. Here’s how Cardiff offers not just unforgettable experiences, but also peace of mind:
Cardiff's commitment to safety
Cardiff has long been celebrated for its vibrant live music scene, and the city’s commitment to safety is equally noteworthy. The Principality Stadium, with its impressive 74,500 capacity, has already hosted packed shows by Bruce Springsteen, P!NK and Taylor Swift this year. With more major acts on the horizon, the city’s pubs, bars, and restaurants are set to welcome thousands of fans before and after the concerts.
FOR Cardiff, the city’s Business Improvement District (BID), is at the forefront of these safety efforts. Since securing Cardiff’s status as a Purple Flag city in 2019, FOR Cardiff has consistently implemented initiatives designed to create a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.
Safe places: haven in the city
In September 2021, FOR Cardiff joined the nationwide ‘Safe Places’ initiative. This program has established a network of over 90 businesses across the city where individuals can seek refuge if they feel intimidated, at risk, or scared. These designated Safe Places are supported and monitored by FOR Cardiff’s business engagement officers, ensuring they remain reliable sanctuaries.
FOR Cardiff
Dan O’Keefe, bar manager at the Philharmonic, shared his experience: ‘The support from FOR Cardiff, which includes training and regular monitoring of the scheme, has been great. During our time as a registered safe place, we have seen first-hand the positive effect it has on safety within the city centre. It is particularly important during these busy times of the year with so many great events happening.’
The closest Safe Place to the Principality Stadium is Pure Gym Cardiff Central, with several others conveniently located along Westgate Street and St Mary Street. To find the nearest Safe Place, the Safe Places app provides a comprehensive list.
For major events like Taylor Swift’s performance in June, FOR Cardiff also employs additional night marshals. These marshals are stationed at key taxi ranks on Mill Lane, Wood Street, and Greyfriars Road to ensure that everyone gets home safely. Their effectiveness was demonstrated during Ed Sheeran’s concerts in June 2022, where they assisted 4,252 people in finding taxis safely.
Women's Safety Charter
In late 2023, FOR Cardiff launched the Women’s Safety Charter, a groundbreaking initiative designed to combat sexual harassment and create a zero-tolerance culture in Cardiff’s public spaces and businesses. Unlike similar initiatives in other cities, Cardiff’s charter operates 24/7, providing continuous support and fostering a safe environment around the clock.
Meanwhile, the Ask for Angela initiative, found in many of Cardiff’s pubs and bars, offers a discreet way for individuals to seek help if they feel uncomfortable or threatened on a date. By simply asking, ‘Is Angela here?’, patrons can signal to trained staff members that they need assistance, ensuring a quick and appropriate response.
Carolyn Brownell, Executive Director at FOR Cardiff, commented: ‘Safety across the city is at the core of everything we do here at FOR Cardiff. Implementing these three initiatives along with extra night marshals ensures Cardiff remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone, particularly during these busy periods.’

Community in harmony

Toscana Strings will present family-friendly adaptations of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf and The Tortoise and the Hare at Cowbridge Comprehensive School Theatre on 22 September.
The Young Ensembles’ Programme, meanwhile, offers exceptional emerging Welsh chamber musicians the opportunity to work with established artists, culminating in a main festival performance on 17 September.
Cowbridge Music Festival continues to inspire the next generation, offering free outreach workshops and concerts to local schools across the Vale and Bridgend, ensuring that classical music remains a vibrant and accessible part of the community.

Do you pay attention to how you’re breathing? Is it possible you are not breathing correctly? You are still alive, so how could you be doing it wrong? As a breathwork coach and instructor, I am amazed at how the way we breathe can impact both our mental and physical health.
If you are struggling with your weight, you may have considered altering what you eat or even joining a weight loss group, but what if you snore or have asthma? Have you considered changing how you breathe?
Paying attention to how we breathe sets the foundation to improve all aspects of our lives, and you can do it right now. Here are my three tips to improve your breathing:
Use your nose: breathing right
Take a breath in and out through your mouth, then in and out through your nose. Did you notice a difference? Breathing through our mouth is our emergency breathing system – this creates a shallow, fast breathing pattern and can cause stress.
Did you notice the difference when breathing through your nose? Slower, more controlled and calmer. This is how our bodies were designed to breathe. Compared to our mouth, our nose acts as a filter – it delivers the perfect volume of air to our lungs and helps transport vital
gasses. Even though we breathe less when we use our noses, we deliver more oxygen into our blood, which benefits every aspect of our body. Time to start using your nose more!
The nose unblocking exercise: breathe clearly in minutes
Some people find breathing through the nose difficult, but we can unblock our nose easily with a simple exercise. Suitable for all except during pregnancy.
Step 1. Sit up straight and do your best to breathe in through your nose, then breathe out through your nose. Step 2. When you have completed your exhale, pinch your nose closed and hold your breath for as long as possible. During this breath hold, move your head from side to side.
Step 3. When it comes to taking your first breath in, release your nose and then breathe in through it.
Repeat until your nose is clear.
The breathing brakes: calm your mind
Are Your Breathing Habits Affecting Your Health?
By Tom Weaver
We face all kinds of anxiety and stress daily, and our breathing is the first thing to be affected. Have you ever noticed how you start breathing faster or even hold your breath in a challenging situation? This is a normal stress response, but do we need to create a stressful environment in our body over an email or something that really isn’t life-threatening? We can use our breath to let our autonomic nervous system know we are safe.
Step 1. Sit up straight or stand tall.
Step 2. Breathe in through your nose.
Step 3. Breathe out through your nose and extend the exhale for longer than the inhale.
Repeat slowly for 1-2 minutes.

Her dynamic teaching style and extensive experience have fueled the rapid growth of her brand since the first studio’s launch in 2020.
