It stands out from all the other noises, it shines, it lights up, it has its own colour, it sneaks up through the city like magical wind with a melody in it. It creeps through the streets and up through the floor she stands on, inside the soles of her shoes, it tickles her toes, her feet must dance, they are not able to stop, it’s as if the song is dancing with her rather than the other way around. But where is the sound coming from? In Sofia Finds a Song we’re taken on an adventure to find a melody with magnetic powers. Because when you find your own song, it is yours forever. Yes, it’s actually impossible to live without sleeping! Our brain works very hard all day long. Even when we’re just lying on the sofa relaxing, our brain is racing. All this activity tires the brain out and it needs to rest. A bit like when you go for a long walk and eventually your legs get so weary they need to rest up. You can’t walk till the end of time, nor can you stay awake forever. But what’s odd about the brain is that it goes on working when you’re asleep. All the activities of the day turn into a huge jumble inside the brain, but at night it has time to make them clean and tidy so you have space for new thoughts and experiences the next day. Without these breaks, you could actually become seriously unwell. Luckily, our body is good at letting us know when the brain needs some rest. That’s when we feel tired! There’s nothing more important than listening to our body when it’s asking for some sleep. If we don’t, we become exhausted, get grouchy and in a bad mood, and everything goes from bad to worse until we have the chance to sleep again.

TRENGER VI EGENTLIG Å SOVE?

14

DO WE REALLY NEED TO SLEEP?

Don’t! is a thought-provoking and fun picture book from Gro Dahle and Svein Nyhus. A lovely story for all children who are itching to explore the world around them, and not least as a reminder for all parents to nag their children a little less.

DON’T! Tiki wants to climb the tall tree. Tiki wants to pet dogs and jump in puddles and go on the swing at top speed. Don’t swing so high! dad yells. Don’t pet the dogs you don’t know! yells mum. Don’t pet dogs you know either because no dogs are safe. Don’t climb up the bookshelf! Don’t eat so much sugar! Don’t! Don’t! We just don’t want anything bad to happen to you! says mum and dad. But it’s not that easy for Tiki when her parents constantly limit her, and she begins to shrink. She becomes so small that she can fit inside a snow globe. Tiki must use strong powers to become herself again, to dare exist in a world in between everything that is dangerous.

THE DAY Po’s Day trudges and tramples, shoves and pushes, pesters and hassles. The Day hangs heavy on Po's shoulders, like a sack he has to drag around. You have to make friends with your Day, says Grandma. You get the Day you deserve, says Mum. Smile at the Day and the Day will smile back, says Dad. But that’s easy for them to say, Po thinks, because nobody knows how exhausting Po’s Day is.

The door to the sanatorium opens, and a pale man comes out onto the stone stairs. His face has a vacant expression. The mouth is half open under the big, white mustache. He just stands there and stares into thin air. A man with a lab coat comes out behind him and pulls his arm and leads him back in. I pay close attention. The tall man in the lab coat comes out again with a trash bag that he pulls behind him around the building. Horror movie like. What if there’s a dead body in the bag? A tuberculosis corpse?

Mum has pulled out a map which she’s folded out in her lap. She’s not paying attention at all.

Excerpt from Hilda Bumblevik and The People Who Disappeared

‘But there’s someone there,’ I say. ‘It was probably shut down a long time ago, Hilda. Sanatoriums don’t exist anymore,’ Mum says. Irritated, she curls up the map and shoves it into the back seat, and drives the car back onto the road. She pulls the driver’s seat forward so she gets an even better view out through the front windshield. I turn to look for the man, but he’s gone. It just looks like an abandoned building that was a sanatorium fifty years ago.

Like Me: The First Time is about being sixteen, about unrequited love, about being naked and scared with someone else, about exploring the scary and unknown. And about trying to like yourself when everyone else does something different. Guaranteed to cause butterflies. ‘The novel is a thorough sexual education, which in 240 pages has time to touch upon pretty much everything about sex. Consent, contraception, fetishes, toys, rape, porn, pregnancy and so on. And everything is done on the teenagers' premises.’ Wisløff’s new young adult novel is a sure-fire tale of the youth’s conflicts, fears, dilemmas and loves. In this book everything is refreshingly up to date.’

It's time for sexual education at school. Sex is a subject the teenagers pretend they know all about and have a big interest in, but what happens when it’s time to try it out in real life with someone? Neither the experience nor the emotions around it may be as expected, and what happens when everyone else thinks they know what happened and it gets shared on social media? The vulnerability of being young and inexperienced in sexuality and love are recurring themes for the characters in this book.

How do you even have sex? What if you don’t want to have sex, while everyone else acts like it has to happen now? How do you cope if the person you like likes someone else?

Eit anna blikk 130 x 205 / 232 pages Age 13–18 Erlend Skjetne (b. 1988) comes from Melhus and works as a Norwegian language teacher for immigrants. He was nominated the Tarjei Vesaas debut prize for the collection of poems Skare (2019). In 2021, Skjetne was awarded NTNU’s literature prize and the Bokhandelen’s author scholarship. For his latest novel, A Different View, Skjetne was awarded the Brage Prize in 2021 in the category for Children and Young Adults. He was also nominated for The Norwegian Critics Award for the same book.

Erlend Skjetne

A DIFFERENT VIEW I picture him now: There is light snow in the air, he is pulling a hand through the black hair. Just like that he sends me a glance, a quick smile, before lifting a small backpack out of the luggage compartment. If he is traveling that light, he must be one of us.

A Different View is a story told from a refugee reception centre in the north of Norway. Eighteen Afghan boys are living there, and Anwar is one of them. He loves books and languages and is called The Professor by the other boys. One day Walid moves into his room. Walid is the absolute opposite of Anwar. A charming rebel and excellent football player. Gradually a friendship grows between Anwar and Walid. But everyday life at the centre is hard and the future uncertain. Who of them – if any – will get to stay in Norway?

FRAMTIDA.NO 'In the Young Adult book, A Different View, which with the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan could hardly have been more relevant, Erlend Skjetne gives the refugees a voice. […] He has now written his first Young Adult novel, and it has become an ambitious and important book. Important because it looks at teenage life in Norway from a completely unknown side. Ambitious because Anwar is a philosophically minded young man, who will happily ponder over concepts such as home, community, friendship and belonging. The language is also ambitious.' NRK

'A Different View is linguistically interesting, touching and wise. […] The book is about underage Afghan refugees and is solid and loaded with important perspectives. […] Anwar’s diary notes and school assignments are full of funny linguistic twists and turns. […] This compassionate and curious gaze at other people, the rural culture, Norwegian grammar and the incredibly cold climate is one of the book’s foremost qualities. The main character leaves his mark on the reader.' VG 'The thoughts are big, the associations are many. You easily get drawn into the book’s universe. It is exciting and intense.'

AFTENPOSTEN 'Block to Block is a personal and important show, told by those who could have fallen outside of society.'

Block to Block is about ending up where you are, not because of, but despite of. Don Martin, Castro, and Fela are famous Norwegian rap artists, who are now sharing their stories and taking the readers into their block of flats, behind their music and lyrics. This is a vivid and tough depiction of growing up from East Oslo. It’s original and quick-mouthed, uncompromising, and important. These are vital voices that deserve to be heard. It is a cool, commercial, and original book about a rough life on the Eastside of Oslo. At the same time, it’s a vulnerable family story about suicide, and not least the story of when hip hop came to Norway. This graphic novel is based on the hip hop show Block to Block with Don Martin, Fela and Castro, which was a breakout success at Det Norske Teatret.

Join us in finally taking down the patriarchy!

Through history feminists have been ridiculed and harassed all around the World. In the 18th Century well known feminists where decapitated in the guillotines, and in the 19th Century the Suffragettes were thrown in jail. In our time feminist activists are imprisoned in countries like Iran and Saudi Arabia. Feminists are labelled as moody, angry and unattractive. Still, new generations are daring to proudly call themselves Authorfeminists.Marta Breen and illustrator

Jenny Jordahl have through a number of books proved themselves as great communicators when it comes to the history of women.
