The Official Newsletter of Cobram Anglican Grammar School

A word from the Principal

With Keith Willett

Dear Parents, Carers, and Students,

This past fortnight has, as usual, been very busy There have been many events worthy of mention, however, I would specifically like to focus on school excursions and events that reflect our school’s commitment to Anglican Identity

The Year 7 students travelled to Borambola last week which is an annual camp. This was a great trip with some tired but excited students arriving home on the Wednesday afternoon.

Also taking place last week, our School Captains, Regan Rouse, Mackenzie Duhring, Alina Corso and Abigail Brooker travelled to Perth with Ms Shea Doyle to be part of the AngliSchools 40 year anniversary celebrations. Our students participated in the Eucharist and represented our school in a fine manner. Needless to say, they also learnt much about Perth.

And on Friday this week, we gathered as a school community to celebrate and reflect upon what Lent means to Christians In particular, we have focussed on the words of Pope Francis and his guidance in the space of what fasting can mean. Here are some of his words:

Fast from hurting words and say kind things

Fast from sadness and be filled with gratitude

Fast from anger and be filled with patience

Fast from pessimism and be filled with hope

Fast from worries and trust in God

Fast from complaints and contemplate simplicity

Fast from pressures and be prayerful

Fast from bitterness and fill your heart with joy

Fast from selfishness and be compassionate to others

Fast from grudges and be reconciled

Fast from words and be silent so you can listen

Warm regards, Keith

Year 7 Camp

Last week, our energetic Year 7 cohort participated in their first camp as secondary students at the Borambola! This activity-based camp was designed to help students forge new friendships, especially as many have joined us from various local primary schools.

The camp offered an array of engaging activities that encouraged teamwork, resilience, and plenty of laughter. A highlight for many was the famous Mud Run, where students embraced the challenge and enjoyed getting dirty!

Other memorable activities included the Castaway and Minute to Win It challenges, where quick thinking and teamwork were put to the test Students also worked in teams to build carts, tried their hand at archery, tackled rock climbing walls, and enjoyed swimming and canoeing sessions.

Additionally, they learned essential survival skills, gaining both confidence and practical knowledge

Beyond the fun and games, the camp was a valuable opportunity for students to connect with one another, strengthen friendships, and build a sense of community within the group. We are proud of our Year 7 students for their enthusiasm, teamwork, and positive spirit throughout the camp.

It was a memorable experience that set the foundation for lasting friendships and a fantastic start to their secondary school journey

A big thanks to Mrs Chmiel, Mrs Dalitz and Mr Thompson for accompanying the students on camp. A busy but enjoyable few days!

Project Ready visit CPE

One of the most exciting aspects of the Project Ready program is the opportunity to engage with the community and explore potential employment opportunities Students are introduced to local businesses and meet key stakeholders, gaining valuable insights into the world of work During these outings, students are given informative tours that help them prepare for their future careers.

This week, we had the privilege of visiting CPE, where we were provided with an informative talk about the various job opportunities available, including work experience placements and School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs) Students learned about the wide range of positions on offer and were also given the chance to complete an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) safety audit This exercise helped reinforce the concepts they are studying in Module 2, Participate in Work Health and Safety.

Following the CPE visit, students were given the opportunity to purchase lunch in the local township, where their communication skills were put to the test. In the afternoon, we visited Cobram Community House and had the chance to view the impressive work completed by last year's Project Ready group It was a great day of learning, networking, and skill development!

~ Ms Sharonlee Parker, Project Ready Facilitator

“On our excursion to CPE and the Cobram community house we came across many new and interesting things that the average person would never expect, like how CPE has a multimillion dollar machine that does welding. ”Project Ready student, Beau Kernaghan

“When we went to CPE, we filled out an induction quiz about work health and safety We also performed a safety check which included checking tags on electrical cords & fire extinguishers We also observed workers, looking to see if they were wearing their correct PPE gear. This was helpful as we have started our work health and safety unit. It gave us an insight to how important it is that everyone follows the policies and guidelines to ensure nobody gets injured ” - Project Ready student, Emily Lewis

Remote Pilots Take to the Skies

Our VET - Aviation (Remote Drone Pilot) students took to the skies this week with their first drone test flight on the oval! After spending the initial weeks of Term 1 learning the theory and safety regulations behind flying these awesome machines, it was finally time to put some of this knowledge into practice. This exciting trial was the perfect warm-up for Harmony Day next Friday, where the budding pilots will be tasked with capturing aerial photos and videos to showcase the event from above. We can’t wait to see their creativity soar!

Explore Harmony Day Themes Through Reading

Harmony Week is just around the corner, taking place from March 17-23, and it’s a time to celebrate diversity, inclusion, and belonging. For Junior School, recommended titles include: Whoever You Are, Somebody’s Land, We Are All Equal, The Friendly Games, and many more. For Senior School, suggested readings feature: Ten Pound Pom, Tiger Daughter, You Must Be Layla, The Happiest Refugee, and more

Students of all ages are encouraged to come to the Library to explore these books and embrace Harmony Week through the joy of reading!

Hume Primary Swimming Championships

Our Junior Swim Squad had a fantastic day competing at the Hume Regional Championships in Shepparton last week. The level of competition was incredibly high, and our swimmers showed great determination and effort in every race they competed in!

A special thank you to Mr O’Dwyer for transporting our students to and from the event, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable day for everyone. We also extend our gratitude to the parents who traveled to support and cheer on our swimmers it certainly meant a lot to the team! While we didn’t have any swimmers progress through to the State Finals, we couldn’t be prouder of all our competitors for their hard work, sportsmanship, and team spirit

Our four School Captains Abigail Brooker, Mackenzie Duhring, Alina Corso, and Regan Rouse had an awesome opportunity to spend four days in beautiful Perth to participate in the AngliSchools 40th Year Celebration Eucharist at the stunning Saint George’s Cathedral

This special occasion saw the student leaders joined by other members of the AngliSchools network, weaving together themes of faith, community, and tradition During their time in Perth, the students also visited Frederick Irwin Anglican School and took part in a dynamic round table leadership forum at Saint George’s Anglican Grammar School. This gathering was an excellent opportunity for student leaders from across the AngliSchools network to share ideas, discuss leadership challenges, and strengthen their sense of community.

The experience left our leaders feeling inspired and blessed, reinforcing their connection to our Anglican Identity Our four School Captains should be commended for their representation of our school, embodying the values of leadership, faith, and community spirit

Year Celebration

Abigail Does us Pr

Year 12 student Abigail Brooker represented our school superbly at the Lions 201V6 District Youth of the Year Final in Wangaratta last Saturday Although she didn’t progress to the State Finals, Abigail delivered an outstanding speech on the important issue of teacher retention in rural communities an achievement made even more impressive considering she had only returned from a school trip to Perth that same weekend!

We are incredibly proud of the way in which Abigail represented our school community Public speaking at such a high level takes a lot of courage and for that she should be proud of her efforts.

Sports Academy

Last weekend, our Year 7-9 Sports Academy students had an incredible opportunity to volunteer as ball boys and girls at the 2025 Cobram-Barooga Classic Not only were they part of the exciting action, but they also had the privilege of meeting the tournament champions – Taliqua Clancy and Jana Milutinovic (Women’s) and Oliver Merritt and Jed Walker (Men’s).

A huge well done to our Sports Academy students who represented themselves and our school with pride: Jean-Marie Jonker, Thomas Burns, George Marshall, Callum Lincoln, Bailey Power, Aiden Power, Jas Brown, and Sam Brown. Your enthusiasm to get amongst the action was outstanding, and we are proud of your contribution to this tournament!

Thank you for showcasing the spirit and values of our school so admirably
