Mr Keith Willett to lead Cobram AGS for a further five years

Dear school community,

On behalf of School Council, we are pleased to announce the reappointment of Mr Keith Willett as Principal for the next five years

The decision to continue in the role was, in Mr Willett’s own words, a very easy one He has expressed his deep respect for the school, its values, and the positive direction in which it is heading.

He considers himself fortunate to be part of a school community that includes tremendous students, dedicated and professional staff, engaged families, and a committed and supportive School Council.

Reflecting on the past five years, Mr Willett highlighted a period of stability and growth, particularly in terms of enrolment consolidation and the expansion of opportunities for all students

A strong focus has been placed on ensuring that every young person in our community can access a meaningful educational and career pathway, no matter their aspirations.

This commitment has helped foster the inclusive and welcoming culture for which our school is known a place where all individuals are accepted and celebrated

Looking ahead, Mr Willett is excited by the future of Cobram AGS. Over the next five years, he will continue to work with the school community to bring our masterplan to life. The development and near completion of the Trades Centre is a key milestone in this journey, underlining the school’s focus on practical, future-oriented learning environments.

Most importantly, Mr Willett remains energised by the relationships and spirit that define Cobram AGS

"The most important element of any school is the people who make up the school community," he said "Continuing to work alongside such great students, staff and families is something to which I look forward with pleasure and enthusiasm "

The School Council congratulate Mr Willett on your reappointment and look forward to the continued growth and success of our school under your leadership.

ANZAC Legacy Honoured

On 25 April 2025, the Cobram AGS community came together in a united show of respect to honour the legacy of the ANZACs Students, staff, and families participated in commemoration services across the region, and it was heartening to see our school uniforms worn with such pride.

Our students served as outstanding ambassadors throughout the day whether marching in local parades, laying wreaths, or performing during services, their involvement was meaningful.

This strong level of participation beautifully reflected the spirit of remembrance and the values we uphold as a school community A particular highlight was the Junior School Choir’s touching performance of ‘Side by Side’ at the Cobram 10am service, which resonated deeply with those present.

Adding to the solemnity of the occasion, Year 12 student Lewis Brown once again delivered a powerful rendition of the Last Post, demonstrating impressive musical skill on his bugle.

We are incredibly proud of how our school honoured the ANZAC legacy ANZAC Day continues to be a powerful reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and service of those who came before us and of the freedoms we enjoy as a result

Cowell Claim Cross Country Crown

Students, staff and spectators alike were treated to a perfect day at Thompson’s Beach for the annual Cobram AGS Cross Country Carnival. With the sun shining and a vibrant atmosphere all around, it was a fantastic setting for competition.

Well done to all students who not only gave their best in their races but also showed outstanding support for one another especially as runners pushed themselves to the finish line in very warm conditions It was also truly wonderful to see so many parents and family members who came along to cheer from the sidelines

Congratulations to Cowell House on their impressive victory in this year’s event, taking home the highly coveted Cross Country Shield! The win was particularly momentous against the backdrop of Parkes’ recent run of dominance, which had seen them claim the last four sporting shields including two in Swimming, as well as Cross Country and Athletics.

It was a closely fought contest just like many of the races throughout the day, with students in red narrowly edging out a determined Farrer House to secure the win by just 22 points A thrilling finish to a fantastic day of competition!

Final house standings:

Cowell: 306 points

Farrer: 284 points

Parkes: 242 points

Stanyer: 204 points

Year 11 Careers Camp

At the beginning of this term, our Year 11 students had the exciting opportunity to attend a camp in Melbourne – an integral part of our Career Education program The fourday trip was designed to help students explore post-secondary pathways and broaden their horizons as they begin to think seriously about life beyond school

Staying at The Village on Franklin Street, students immersed themselves in a packed itinerary that included visits to several university and TAFE campuses. These tours and presentations provided valuable insight into a wide range of tertiary education options, helping students understand the diversity of courses, facilities, and pathways available to them

A highlight of the camp was attending the 2025 VCE and Careers Expo, where students explored a wide range of opportunities through exhibitors offering information on the VCE, tertiary study options, career and employment advice, study strategies, apprenticeships and traineeships, international exchange and gap year programs, and university housing options

For our VCE Vocational Major (VM) students, the camp included tailored activities aligned with their Personal Development Skills class These sessions focused on self-growth, decision-making, and future planning, adding a personal development lens to their career exploration experience.

The camp presented a valuable opportunity for students to build familiarity Melbourne using public transport, gaining not only independence but also a sense of what student life might be like in a big city

The camp prompted me to reassess different career paths. The Careers Expo showed me various options that I didn’t consider which I am now interested in.” - Heidi Franklin

“The most helpful and instructive thing I took from the Year 11 camp was to explore the universities and how each Uni had their own unique atmosphere to tailor to my career ambitions and personal attributes This was beneficial to experience ‘Uni Life’ before applying and making decisions for my future.” - Savannah Kernaghan

“I now know I feel university is not the pathway for me and prefer the TAFE pathway option instead ” - Kasey Caldow

“The camp reinforced that my preferred career path is open, but also demonstrated to me my other career options.” - Owen Woolley

“The most helpful thing I took away from this camp in terms of a career pathway is the option to be able to not get an ATAR and come back to uni later in life as a ‘mature-age’ student This information is very useful to me as I'd like to do tertiary dance and maybe come back to university later in life for a bachelor of creative arts.” - Lacey Eddy

The Student Perspective

RYA Update with Matilda Waser

Year 11 student Matilda Waser sits down with the Crier to reflect on her participation in the Rural Youth Ambassdor program of 2025.

This year I am participating in the Rural Youth Ambassador program run by CEP (Country Education Partnership). The program has been a really good way for myself and other youth ambassadors from throughout Victoria to use our voice to make an impact on the education system in Victoria.

So far we have heard presentations from groups such as the Victorian Student Representative Council (VICSRC), Youth Affairs Council of Victoria (YACVIC), and the Department of Education During these sessions, we have learnt about initiatives that are currently in place and we are given the opportunity to provide feedback on these programs and possible improvements that could be made.

During our most recent forum down in Melbourne in mid Term 2, we started our group projects. This involved choosing topics and challenges that we believe are of importance and could be improved on by the department.

Some of our focus areas are:

·Mental Health

·School Facilities

·Inclusion/Diversity Student Voice/Leadership

During the next forum, we will create a presentation with reasons on why the education system needs to improve these areas. We will then develop a solution to the challenges identified and present it to the government’s education sector personnel.

Not only has the program provided me with a better understanding of the common educational challenges rural students face, it has also been an amazing way to connect with like-minded people from all over Victoria The program also has a big social aspect to it. We get to meet new people our age who come together to achieve a shared goal.

The environment is really welcoming and the CEP staff make it fun. After a day of work, we get to go out for dinner and participate in fun activities – so far we have been to indoor bowling and the escape rooms.

Year 12s Prepare For Life After School

Our Year 12 students have been stepping confidently into the future, thanks to a series of engaging "Branch Out" Mentoring sessions facilitated by Marnie, the Youthrive Rural Engagement Coordinator for Greater Shepparton

Over four insightful sessions, students explored the realities of moving out of home – from understanding rental responsibilities to navigating the logistics of independent living. They also tackled essential life skills like budgeting, motivation, and maintaining a healthy life balance. Using personalised budget sheets, students mapped out their expenses and gained a clearer understanding of managing money in adult life.

The final session in Week 9 focused on scholarships –timed perfectly with the opening of Youthrive Victoria’s scholarship applications

A big thank you to Marnie for supporting our students and helping them feel more prepared for the exciting journey ahead!

House Captains Get to Grips with Leadership

On 2 May, our Year 6 student leaders – Gemma, Kadeyn, Jack, Oliver, Bridiie, Koa, Mia and Lucy – attended the GRIP Leadership Conference in Shepparton. The event was a fantastic opportunity for them to build their leadership skills through interactive workshops and shared experiences with students from other schools.

The conference focused on three key topics: The Responsibilities of a Student Leader – exploring how leadership is about responsibility and service, not power or attention.

Leadership Through Friendship – showing that effective leadership often starts with genuine connections, conversations and shared enjoyment.

New Ideas to Help Others – encouraging students to think of ways to support their peers with practical and meaningful ideas.

The day provided a strong balance of hands-on learning and fun, leaving our young leaders feeling confident, inspired and ready to make a difference in our school community.

"It was a fantastic conference that engaged and motivated our student leaders – a great balance between practical leadership strategies and fun activities." — Head of Junior School, Fiona Clark

Year 12 Students Brave the Cold for a Worthy Cause

In the final week of term, our Year 12 students took part in one of the school’s most valued traditions. The Winter Sleepout is held each year to raise awareness about the challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness

Our Year 12s slept on school grounds to loosely mimic what it’s like to not have the comforts of a bed

As part of the wider Winter Appeal, students and families were invited to donate non-perishable food and toiletry items for our "Giving Day" drive. It was wonderful to see so many generous contributions, with bags overflowing with essential goods!

Donations continued the following day, with all items delivered to Cobram Food Bank to support those in need

A massive thank you to everyone who contributed to this important cause.

Junior School Disco a night for the Ages!

Our Junior students were definitely living their best life at the highly anticipated Junior School Disco!

The night was a great success thanks to the tireless work behind the scenes of our amazing Parents and Friends group

The student-selected songs, glow sticks, games and photo corner all added to the party vibe over the course of the two sessions (F-2 and 36).

A big thank you also goes to the staff who assisted with supervision, and a special mention to a group of our Year 10 Project Ready students; Shawn, Emily, Patrick and Maddie C who kindly volunteered their time to help out and ensure the young partygoers had an awesome experience!

Year 10s On the Pathway to Next Chapter

Career Education for our Year 9 and 10 students kicked off in Term 2, with a number of rich and engaging careers initiatives already completed. Term 3 and 4 will see Years 7, 8, 11 and 12 students undertake their career lessons Our Careers Education Program continues to grow and support all year levels at Cobram AGS We are proud to offer a dynamic and supportive Careers Education Program that guides our Senior School students through every stage of their journey; from self-discovery in Years 7-9 to real-world experience and informed decision-making in Years 1012.

Throughout this semester, our Year 9 students began to consider their future pathways, and many were unsure about the direction they wanted to take. To support them in building self-awareness and confidence, they participated in Morrisby Online Profiling – a personalised career tool that helped them uncover their unique strengths, interests, and personality traits Through this program, students explored a wide range of career options, gained insight into which subjects aligned with their goals, and received a comprehensive report

Our Year 10 students also engaged in critical futurefocused planning One of the key experiences was ‘My Pathway Day’, a program designed to help students explore the wide range of VCE and Vocational Major subjects available in 2026. This day provided an opportunity for students to reflect on their interests and aspirations while engaging with subject information and career guidance. It gave them the time and space to think deeply about their options and gain clarity about their next steps. Family involvement during this stage is incredibly valuable.

Many students in Year 10 can feel uncertain or overwhelmed by the decisions they face, and supportive conversations at home help build their confidence and provide reassurance Families play a key role in helping students identify their strengths, interests, and long-term goals, while also considering practical factors such as workload, subject balance, travel, and employment options. By being part of the process, families help ensure that subject choices are not only informed and realistic, but also personally meaningful.

In addition to pathway planning, Year 10 students also participated in a five-day Work Experience block from 23-27 June. This valuable opportunity allowed students to step into real-world settings, explore potential careers firsthand, and develop key employability skills such as teamwork, communication, and initiative Work experience provided an important glimpse into the working world and helped bridge the gap between school and future employment.

Taster Days Spark Curiosity

This term, our focus on driving enrolment enquiries continued and we were pleased to facilitate two successful Taster Days, giving prospective students the authentic Cobram AGS experience.

On 14 May, we welcomed close to 50 students for our second Year 7 Taster Day of 2025. Participants enjoyed a full day of learning and discovery, rotating through a wide variety of subjects including Mathematics, Science, English, PE, Drama, Art, RAVE, Humanities, and Foods. Then on 24 June, we held our very first Foundation Taster Day a heartwarming introduction to "big school" for children starting in 2026 It was fantastic to see so many families involved, with students taking part in activity rotations across Music, Art, PE, and Library

Enrolments for both Foundation and Year 7 in 2026 are now open. With strong interest already shown, we encourage families to submit applications early to secure a place.

Student Forum Lead ANZAC Day Service at Regional Care

Early in the term, our School Captains and Student Forum representatives had the great honour of coordinating and leading the ANZAC Day service at Cobram Regional Care a responsibility entrusted to us by the Cobram-Barooga RSL Sub-Branch.

With many of its members unable to contribute as they have in the past, the RSL is actively seeking to pass the baton to the next generation to ensure the continuation of meaningful and respectful commemorations into the future. Our school was privileged to be invited to take on a greater leadership role in this process, and our students rose to the occasion.

A highlight of the morning was Lewis Brown’s stirring performance of the Last Post on bugle a tradition he continues with great pride and skill. The Junior Choir, under the guidance of Mrs Chmiel, performed Side by Side, which touched the hearts of many in the room.

Mackenzie Duhring and Abigail Brooker led the service as MCs, guiding the proceedings with confidence and respect. Regan Rouse opened with a prayer, while Alina Corso laid a wreath on behalf of our school community. Peyton Royston and Peter Everingham managed the audio, ensuring the smooth running of the program, and Baden Riedell raised the flag with care and dignity

We extend our sincere thanks to Cobram Regional Care for their warm welcome and support in hosting this special event, and we acknowledge the contributions of students from other local schools who enriched the service by delivering poignant readings

Principal’s Message

As we conclude Semester One, it is clear that Term 2 has been one of energy, momentum, and community spirit

It’s been exceptionally busy, and no week captured the breadth of activity more than week 9, which saw the Year 10 Careers Expo, the Arts and Tech Showcase, and the Junior Disco all take place. This single week was a wonderful snapshot of the dynamic and vibrant school life we are proud to offer at Cobram Anglican Grammar School

Events like these don’t happen without the tireless work of our staff and the enthusiastic support of our families. Thank you all for making these moments possible.

Looking ahead, a reminder that the Debutante Balls will be held during the final week of the school holidays. We look forward to celebrating this significant milestone with our students and their families.

Another exciting milestone on the horizon is our 25Year Celebration, which is most likely to take place in November This will be a special opportunity to reflect on our journey and celebrate all that has been achieved.

In enrolment news, our Kinder Visit Program and successful Taster Days for Foundation and Year 7 have laid strong foundations for 2026. Word-ofmouth remains our most powerful marketing tool thank you for continuing to be our strongest advocates in the wider community.

I thank all across our community for your contributions in Semester 1 and wish all a restful winter break

Anglican Identity

With Ms Shea Doyle

Recently, Cobram AGS staff attended the AngliSchools Eastern States Anglican Identity Day event held at Cathedral College Wangaratta

The day supports staff from the four eastern state schools to come together for purposeful reflection and worship. The day began with The Bishop of Wangaratta, The Right Reverend Clarence E Bester celebrating a Eucharist in The Chapel of the Good Shepherd.

Following the Eucharist, two very engaging keynote speakers shared their stories The first, a long serving Anglican school principal, inspired with his message of the role Anglican educators have in a world where, at times, it seems that living out our values is countercultural He reminded the audience of the opportunity they have to share stories of and practice faith whilst at the same time welcoming, with a generous spirit, those of other faith traditions or those of no faith.

In his address, The Reverend Peter Laurence OAM, the Chief Executive Officer of AngliSchools, updated the staff on the work of the organisation and shared stories of the 40 anniversary festivities th

One of the most important ways in which Cobram AGS celebrates our Anglican identity is through worship and this term both the Junior and Senior School cohorts have continued to explore a variety of themes in Chapel. They have particularly enjoyed engaging with Father Victor Adams and his services, allowing them to reflect on the message of the readings and prayers presented by the House Leaders and School Captains.

Another way in which Anglican Identity is cultivated is through acts of service and one of the highpoints of this term was the commitment to a Winter Appeal Students were invited to bring a non-perishable food item or toiletry item to our Giving Day held in the last week of term The collected items were donated to Cobram Food Bank Further to this, our Year 12 cohort participated in the traditional Winter Sleepout aimed at raising awareness of the challenges face by homeless people in our community.

Junior School Report

As Term 2 comes to a close, I would like to thank you all for your support and involvement once again

We have a wonderful school with committed teachers and education support staff, a supportive parent community and focused, caring students. Without extensive involvement from all parties, our school would not be able to function as well as it does!

Teaching and Learning

Mrs Cox (Teaching and Learning Leader) and myself were lucky enough to attend a two-day professional learning conference in Melbourne with Dr Nathaniel Swain

With Mrs Fiona Clark Senior School Report

With Mr John Thompson

As Term Two draws to a close, it’s clear that the momentum from Term One has carried right through, with another action-packed term full of learning, growth, and memorable experiences for our senior students.

As Term Two draws to a close, it’s clear that the momentum from Term One has carried right through, with another action-packed term full of learning, growth, and memorable experiences for our senior students.

One of the standout events this term was the Year 11 camp to Melbourne, where students engaged in a variety of University, Training Centre and job site tours, whilst having some fun along the way.

More recently, VCE students sat the General Achievement Test (GAT), a significant milestone in their academic journey Whilst all students completing a Unit 3/4 subject complete the GAT, it’s another reminder of the short amount of time Year 12 have left with us at CAGS.

We are excited to bring back this learning to our teachers and students and apply theories and teaching techniques that align best with the science of how we learn. These are:

The simple model of memory

Cognitive load theory foundations

Changes to Mathematics and English teaching to align with the Science of Learning approach

Enjoy the Winter break and I look forward to seeing our students and families on Monday 21 July for the start of Term 3.

For our Year 10 students, Term Two has been a time of big decisions and exciting opportunities. Subject selection for next year is well underway, with students considering their pathways and passions

In addition, the final week of term has seen Year 10’s undertake work experience, gaining valuable insights into the world beyond school and helping shape future career pathways

Beyond these major events, the term has been filled with the usual rhythm of school life classes, assessments, cocurricular activities, and community events, such as the Biggest Morning Tea and Mother’s Day Breakfast. The continued development of the Trade Centre has been a visible reminder of our commitment to expanding opportunities for students, and we’re eagerly anticipating its completion.

As always, I want to thank our dedicated staff for their tireless efforts this term From organising camps and coordinating assessments to guiding students through subject choices and work placements, your work is deeply appreciated

Wishing everyone a restful and refreshing break. We look forward to another exciting term ahead.

George Puts His own Spin On It

For most kids, turning 13 might mean a party, cake, and a few presents. But for George Marshall, it will mean something a little more special: a two-week cricket tour of England over the school holidays!

The Year 7 student has been selected to travel with the Sean Brown Cricket Academy, playing a series of friendly matches across London, Bath, and Liverpool. It’s not a tournament as such, but an opportunity to soak up international experience, play in new conditions, and learn from some other promising young cricketers. One of the undoubted highlights will be training at one of cricket’s most iconic stadiums, Lords.

George told The Crier how the trip came about: “I was part of the Sean Brown Winter Warriors and there was a game in Shepparton that happened last year,” he explained “I was invited to go and I went Then Sean Brown was just calling out names and I was one of them ” The tour includes 7–8 matches in the 40–50 over format, with plenty of sightseeing mixed in The London Eye is high on the to-do list, and George will be sharing the experience with his dad, Adam

Cricket hasn’t always been part of George’s life He first picked up the sport at age 11, when his dad signed him up after COVID restrictions were lifted Starting out as a pace bowler, he felt something wasn’t quite right with his technique, but that odd bent elbow and flick of the wrist turned out to be a hidden gift

“My coach at the Sean Brown Academy told me to slow my action down and give spin a go,” he said. “I found out I was actually a really good off-spinner because of my wrist rotation.” Now he’s refining his craft and occasionally bowls a doosra – a tricky delivery made famous by Sri Lankan spin legend Muralai Muralitharan.

As a member of our Year 7-9 Sports Academy, George is known for his commitment and love of the game. This tour will serve as not just a celebration of his 13th birthday, but a chance to keep chasing a dream! Safe travels and good luck with this exciting opportunity George!

Jasper Bound for All Schools Nationals

Year 7 student Jasper Brown is making big strides literally in the world of distance running, with his recent performance earning him a place at the upcoming Australian All Schools Cross Country Championships in Ballarat

At just 13 years old, Jasper secured his spot on the national stage after an outstanding run at the Victorian All Schools State Championships in Bundoora, where he placed fifth out of 140 runners in his age group He completed the 3km course in a remarkable time of 9 minutes and 55 seconds Now, with the nationals in sight, Jasper has his eyes firmly set on finishing in the top 10 and he’s already looking further down the track, hoping to qualify for the World Championships or the Olympics one day. Brisbane in 2032 would be the ultimate dream!

Like any high performing athlete, his results are no accident. For the past six months he has followed a dedicated training regime, running five days a week and incorporating strength and plyometric training twice a week to improve speed and endurance.

Athletic talent clearly runs in the family. His older brother, Sam (Year 9), also competed at the state level, finishing a strong 48th in the 4km event with a time of 14 minutes and 24 seconds, a personal best at the distance.

We wish Jasper all the best as he prepares to represent his school and state on the national stage!
