What’s On

With Keith Willett
The past fortnight has indeed been a very busy time across our entire school community.
The Welcome Evening conducted on Wednesday was well attended and there was a very pleasant and convivial atmosphere. Our young musicians were wonderful as usual
Our Year 9 cohort attended the Mount Buffalo Adventure Camp and had a great time Caving, abseiling and rock climbing were amongst the activities that saw this group confront some new and unique challenges. It was a terrific camp.
Our school certainly has some very competitive and skilful swimmers with a number of students qualifying for the Hume Region event thanks to their deeds at the GMDSSV Divisional events last week (Junior) and today (Senior) We look forward to following their progress and I acknowledge the support these young people receive from their families and their teachers
Our P&F are asking for donations for their Easter Raffle. Last year the log splitter was the main prize and was a significant fundraiser for the school. The P&F kindly ask that any donations are made to the school office by 6 March Please refer to their Facebook page for further details
On Sunday 16 March from 10 00am until 12 00 pm, our school is holding an Open Day for prospective families It would be great to see some new families attend this event and I would sincerely appreciate it if our current families could assist with publicising this opportunity to see and tour the school.
If you tune into the radio station Edge FM (102 5) you may hear two of our student leaders, Abigail Brooker and Mackenzie Duhring, voicing an advertisement for the Open Day
Our Trades Centre project continues to take shape with the slab being poured and much underground infrastructure work being completed. Unfortunately, this has meant some interruptions and I thank our school families and carers for your cooperation at pick up and drop off times, particularly this week with the closure of our parent car park
Further to this, we have been informed by the builders that this driveway will need to be closed again on Monday and Tuesday next week to complete critical electrical works. The same arrangements will remain in place, with parents and carers asked to please drop students off at the Young St entrance. The car park at the Sports Stadium should also be utilised where possible.
I also remind parents and carers of being prohibited from parking in the front D of the school during drop off and pick up times We have observed some families parking in this area during these times which is highly dangerous given the number of buses moving through this area.
From 19-21 February, our Year 9 students embarked on an exciting three-day adventure camp at Lake Catani, Mount Buffalo. This was the first time our school participated in this camp, offering a new experience for students and staff The trip encouraged independence, resilience, and teamwork while enjoying the natural beauty of the area.
On Wednesday, the group departed Cobram AGS at 7:30 am, heading for Mount Buffalo
Upon arrival, students quickly set up camp, working together to pitch tents and organise gear. The adventure began with activity rotations, where students tackled abseiling, rock climbing, or caving The day concluded with a 5km guided night walk
Thursday was action-packed with two more rotations of abseiling, rock climbing, or caving These activities tested problemsolving, endurance, and teamwork. Whether descending a rock face, scaling heights, or navigating underground caves, students stepped out of their comfort zones! That evening, students reflected on their experiences over dinner and a debrief, sharing achievements and personal growth.
On Friday, after breakfast, students packed up, ensuring they left no trace behind at their camp site. A brief stop in Beechworth allowed for relaxation before returning to Cobram AGS by 2:30 pm A huge thank you to staff members Mr Willett, Mr McConnell, and Mrs Rathbone, as well as the instructors who made this experience possible. Most importantly, congratulations to the students for embracing the challenges with enthusiasm and demonstrating exemplary conduct They should be proud of how they represented our school!
The excitement was palpable as the Cobram AGS community came together for a night of fun, food, and entertainment on a warm Wednesday evening. The event kicked off with a series of impressive musical performances from our super talented students, setting the tone for a lively night
The delicious BBQ dinner was a hit thanks to our good friends at Cobram Rotary, who were fantastic once again on the grill! Adding to the party vibes, Nicole from Dazzle & Weave provided face painting for over two hours, transforming some very excited children into incredible creations of their choosing!
Meanwhile, bargain hunters took advantage of the pop-up uniform shop, where items were available for just $2 thanks to our amazing school P&F.
Perhaps the most anticipated event of the night, however, was the parents vs students’ game of “Team Touchdown” on the oval which was taken out by the students (there may have been a sight numerical advantage in their favour) A massive thanks to Year 11 student Ben Curnick for coordinating and officiating the game!
Thank you to everyone who turned out for the occasion and enjoyed the evening It’s fair to say we have an amazing school community!
On Tuesday this week, two of our school captains, Mackenzie Duhring and Abigail Brooker, took a trip to the Edge FM studio in Wangaratta to record a radio ad for our upcoming Open Day on March 16.
With plenty of helpful tips from production manager Matt, they quickly nailed their lines and picked up some great tips on annunciation and voice projection along the way!
Systems Engineering is about designing, building and testing mechanical and electronic systems It combines problemsolving, hands-on learning and technology
Why was this subject introduced in 2025?
With technology advancing rapidly, this subject helps students develop important skills for future careers in engineering, robotics and automation.
What are some of the key skills students will learn?
Problem-solving and critical thinking, designing and building mechanical and electrical systems, coding and automation, and using engineering tools and equipment.
What are some career pathways that align with this subject?
The skills learned in this subject can lead to careers in engineering, robotics, automotive, aerospace and manufacturing. While not a prerequisite subject for university, it provides a strong foundation for further studies in STEM fields.
What are some interesting projects students will undertake in 2025?
Students’ first project is to design and build a mouse trap car (as seen in the images to the right), followed by tasks related to robotics, automation and real-world problem-solving. Students also have the opportunity to build a model for submission to Top Designs, with the chance to have their work displayed at the Melbourne Museum
Who should consider taking this subject?
This subject is great for students who enjoy hands-on work, problem-solving, and technology. No prior experience is needed just a willingness to learn and explore!
Tune into Edge FM (102.5) during the morning or afternoon to hear Abigail and Mackenzie’s voices lighting up the airwaves!

With their guidance, students cut up a large number of clothing items and bed sheets, which will be repurposed and sold to local mechanics as rags This initiative not only promotes sustainability but also supports the local community A big thank you to Joan and Alex for their time and expertise!
