Hardwood for the Housewives?

"If only we could get the retailer more interested in handling hardwoods," a hardwood wholesaler said to us recently. "We've tried a few things over the years, but we didn't seem to make much progress; maybe we should have tried something else," he added.

It's a good thought and one we're convinced merits considerable attention and work. The retailer's cool reception to becoming meaningfully involved with hardwood is nothing new. Yet developments in hardwood retailing in recent years show increased interest and movement in this market area.

Specialist hardwood retailers have been springing up in remarkable numbers in recent years. Usually, these are stores that deal almost exclusively in hardwoods for the consumer trade. In this issue we have stories on two of them: McKinney Hardwoods, a newly opened independent, and an Austin Hardwoods store, part of a franchise chain. There is no doubt that the market is there.

The challenge is for the manufacturers and wholesalers to expand and build upon this proven market by involving the traditional lumber dealer and his home center/home improvement center counterparts far more than they are today. Rare, indeed, is the home center that has progressed beyond the nits and lice level of hardwood inventory. When is the last time you saw a home center advertisement that aggressively positioned the firm as a source of hardwood for the public?

The profits to be had are there. But the profits are balanced by problems: cost of inventory, slowturn items, lack of employee knowledge and on and on. However, the potential outweighs the problems. Manufacturers and wholesalers alike should recognize that this marketing problem is not insolvable. They need to cooperate, pinpoint targets and begin the steps toward a goal of major new markets for wholesalers, manufacturers and retailers alike.

Unique school for a hardwood career

THE NATIONAL Hardwood I Lumber Association is a trade association for some 1,400 members who produce and consume hardwood lumber. The association was founded in 1898 for the purpose of setting up a uniform system of grading rules for the measurement and inspection of hardwood.

The association still functions as the administrator and keeper of these rules, and now, for practical purposes, all hardwood lumber that is shipped in the United States and Canada, and to a certain extent in world trade, is shipped on grading rules set down by this organization.

Since NHLA is the keeper and adminstrator of the rules, it is reasonable that the association should teach the rules and grading system to those seeking careers in the hardwood lumber industry. In 1948 the association established a Hardwood Inspection Training school in Memphis, Tn. It has operated successfully since that time.

Each year some 200 students attend the 14 week course. Each class consists of 70 students and there are three sessions per yErr. The school is conducted as a vocational school, i.e., the emphasis is on practical application of the rules. Both classrooms and lumber handling facilities

are provided. This is the only school of its kind in the world and students have attended from every state, Europe, Africa, South America and Asia. Probably the best testimony that can be offered is that many graduates from the early classes are now in ownership or management positions in the industry and they are now sending their children and employees to complete the course.

In a further effort to familiarize industry personnel with the grading rules, the association offers one week short courses which may be held anywhere in the country. In this case, a "sponsor" indicates to the inspection departme.nt that they would like to have a short course in their area.

The sponsor provides basic class-

room and lumber handling facilities and tends to the details regarding the enrollment of the 15 to 18 persons who will attend. NHLA provides the instructor on a per diem basis.

These short courses are quite popular and obviously perform the service of making the information concerning the grading rules more readily available to a large number of people.

The Inspection Training School shares facilities with the NHLA executive offices in Memphis. Two essentially all wood buildings are connected with a breezeway. The exterior is clad with cypress siding. Oak and maple flooring is used throughout. There are l5 different species of hardwood plank paneling with various machine and installation patterns used throughout the building.

These buildings, which are strik-. ingly beautiful and extremely functional, are truly working showplaces of hardwood lumber. TheY are situated on 10 acres of beautifully landscaped property.

Total cost was $1,250,000, all of which was donated by association members and friends of the industry, thus leaving the installation debt free when it was completed in 1980. This is an accomplishment of which the entire industry can be justly proud.

New hardwood company defies econoffiv, continues a family tradition

AGE and David McKinneY knew that they were taking a risk when they opened a new lumber operation in Mountain View, Ca., this summer. After all, with interest rates up and housing starts down, and with sawmill closures announced around the country almost weeklY, the lumber market had sunk to a 50 year low.

But the McKinney brothers did not letapoor economy thwart their plans. They started their new business near the affluent communities in the area south of San Francisco that is commonlY called the Silicon Valley. There they began specializing in hardwood products, knowing that many homeowners are as willing now to enrich their homes with the beauty of hardwoods as they were when times were better.

As well as dealing with homeowners, McKinney Hardwood Co. supplies specialty wood products to professional woodworkers, carvers, antique restorers, and custom cabinet and furniture makers. These woodcrafters use the best qualitY hardwood in order to appeal to the sophisticated tastes of the area's residents.

"But don't get the idea that hardwoods are just for the affluent," cautions David McKinney. "People on a budget buy hardwoods in order to save part of the cost of fine furniture by building it themselves." Amateur woodworkers and adult and high school age woodworking students also make up an imPortant Part of the firm's clientele.

To satisfy so many different users, McKinney Hardwood stocks the widest possible variety of hardwood products. The firm inventories about 50 species of domestic and imported lumber in thicknesses that range from Vz" to 4". It regularly stocks such hard to find iterns as quarter-

sawn oak, curly koa, and birdseYe maple.

McKinney displays an imPressive variety of hardwoods in its clean, well-lit showroom. Exotic woods such as cocobola, zebrawood, purpleheart and goncalo alves are displayed in short vertical racks. Each clear piece is surfaced, Prepriced and labeled with a sticker that bears the company's logo.

Although almost every customer who comes into the store spends several minutes looking at the assortment of brightlY colored troPical hardwoods, these exotic woods are not the best sellers. "Exotics are a great draw," Gage McKinneY explains, "but most of our sales come from the more common hardwoods

such as cherry, walnut, alder and mahogany."

The showroom is also stocked with short lengths of many other hardwoods that have been cut into turning blocks and squares. Pliantwood veneers hang from a rack mounted on the wall in such a way that customers can see the entire sheets. Customers are also attracted to the colorful displays of hardwood floor-

ing and paneling, chopping blocks and dowels. In the center of the room exotic wood remnants are piled in bins and sold by weight.

The showroom serves as a table of contents to the large warehouse behind it. In the warehouse most of the same species of lumber are inventoried in longer lengths and a variety of thicknesses. The surfaced lumber is stocked in A-frame racks that reach almost to the rafters. Since the firm permits customers to select their own stock, each bin or stack of lumber is carefully labeled.

McKinney Hardwood has taken a special pride in introducing new species of hardwood to its Bay Area marketplace. Ifilele (a wood from Samoa that resembles teak), shedua (a heavy, dark wood from West Africa), and robusta (a rose-colored wood from Hawaii) are among the woods that the firm has promoted by distributing samples and tech sheets to local woodworkers.

"By introducing these woods, we have established a reputation as a supplier that is actively involved in fulfilling the needs of its customers, "

Gage McKinney notes. Soon the company will be introducing a variety of hardwoods from Chile as well as rosewood and ebony from Indonesia.

Since much of the effort of selling hardwoods to consumers involves the task of acquainting them with the appearances and properties of various woods, McKinney Hardwood freely gives educational literature to its customers. Technical sheets that describe various woods, charts about wood technology and explanations of the patterns in wood grains are among the leaflets that the company has designed to increase its customers' appreciation of hardwood.

Among its other promotional activities the company also provides a 40-minute lecture and slide presentation about hardwoods for the use of high school industrial arts classes. The McKinney presentation is based upon a program designed by the Fine Hardwoods Association of Indianapolis, In., but revised to better reflect the use of hardwoods on the West Coast.

Although their firm is new, the McKinney brothers are not new to

the forest products industry, and neither is their family. On one wall in their store they display old photographs of lumber yards and sawmills which their family has managed over the years.

The McKinney family has a tradition of not letting hard times cool their ambitions. Arthur McKinney, grandfather of Gage and David, began his first lumber operation in San Jose, Ca., in 1932, which was probably the most dismal year for the

Exotic hardwoods offer high profits

FIETURN on investment or inrI creased profits per foot of space utilized are concepts which attract a great deal of attention whenever dealers meet to discuss the state of today's business.

Yet, one subject seldom mentioned is the high profits which can be made with a minimal amount of space devoted to exotic hardwoods. In most instances, it only requires creating an attractive visual display area for various species and informing customers about the availability of the woods. While you may not sell large quantities, exotic hardwoods are a quality product which can command high prices because they are unique. Regardless of how distressed the economy, there are always prospective buyers who have money to spend on products which are considered exclusive.

In certain parts of the country, for example, homes in the million dollar plus category are finding a good

market, and these are the types of structures for which exotic hardwoods are a natural. Many of the commercial projects now under construction can also warrant the cost of exotic hardwoods for paneling, special furniture, entrance ways, accent areas and exterior siding. While most dealers do not solicit business from

producers of end products, oftentimes these manufacturers would prefer to work with a local source rather than some distant supplier. This is also true of industrial users such as railroads, mining companies, steel mills and foundries. Local schools with woodworking classes are another source for sales.

To take advantage of this opportunity for additional business, it does require the dealer to devote a certain amount of time to analyzing exotic hardwoods available, their characteristics and applications. It is usually best to appoint one individual in the organization to become the resident "expert." For example, a wood such as teak has a wide variety of uses for furniture, boats, mouldings and paneling. Apitong, a heavy, dense wood, is used for pilings, mine shaft supports, truck floors and similar applications.

But, this is just scratching the surface. There are hundreds ofdifferent hardwoods with different uses and having someone know just a few can

generate business which may be right in your own back yard. Since you will normally realize a 50s/o profit on the sale of these woods, it certainly seems worthwhile to investigate the possibilities.

The big question to most dealers is how to accomplish this? Fortunately, you do not have to spend years getting an education. Several large hardwood wholesalers located in various parts of the country are more than willing to help you get started and provide the technical assistance to answer virtually any question. They will also supply literature for use with your customers, advertising materials, display samples and will back you up with inventory when you get an order. Several make their sales people available for seminars and calls on customers who require special attention.

One dealer, who has had notable success, displays a large map of the world which calls out where various species are harvested and shows samples of how these woods look in

finished form. By becoming a specialist, he has gained the confidence of customers, and they solicit information on other high-end products which he can supply. While this information did involve searching out the sources of supply and learning some pretty unusual names, the enthusiastic reception from customers has made the effort worthwhile. Since exotic hardwoods arc sold on special order, the only investment besides time has been the map, a small amount of counter area for literature and samples and a brief mention in local newspaper advertising.

At a time when everyone seems to be scratching his head to find ways of improving business, perhaps a phone call or two will open up a whole new range of exotic possibilities for you.

Hardwood franchise fills gap in market

EFORE answering an Austin Hardwood franchise advertisement, Joe Lomax and Joe Brown were a couple of Joes who saw the need for a specialty hardwood store in theirArea of Orange CountY, Ca.

After running a marketing survey, the administrators for Austin Hardwoods in Austin, Tx., agreed and helped the two set up shop in Santa Ana, Ca., a few miles south of Disneyland. This month Joe Lomax and Joe Brown are celebrating the first anniversary of their franchise hardwood operation.

Located in an I1,0(X) sq. ft. facility with three employees and no sales staff, the independently owned and operated store services both cabinetmakers and contractors on the wholesale level as well as do-it-yourself and artist/craftsmen retail customers.

Before the store opened, Brown

went to Texas where Austin PeoPle trained him so that he could become the full-time operating manager of the store, while Lomax continued at his job. Neither had any previous experience in the wood busines except as customers.

Northwest Hardwood Association meets the challenge of the future

Doubtless any other region in the United States is as affected by the timber industry as is the Pacific Northwest. The timber industry is right at the top when it comes to providing jobs, security and income to the Northwest. It is certainly affected by housing starts, interest rates, and all those economic conditions so often mentioned by the economists. But still, the NHA and its member mills, wholesalers, distribution yards and manufacturers are meeting the crisis, planning for the future, and progressing forward with "cautious optimism."

The Northwest Hardwood Association was founded on the principal

that it would be the only organization dedicated exclusively to providing a constant log supply, market promotion and consistent quality of Western alder and Western maple. To this goal, it is still the only one.

The supply of hardwoods indigenous to the Northwest is virtually inexhaustible if proper land management techniques are observed. One person particularly interested in this phase is Robert Tarrant of Oregon state university. Tarrant has long been a proponent of utilizing alder's natural resource and properly managing it. His interest and professional expertise date back 25 years, long before it became stylish to be on the alder management team.

Part of his current research involves efforts to shorten the growth

period required for merchantable alder from the current 35 to 40 years to 25 years. Part of this involves finding the proper planting time for alder with the conifers, so that one does not overshadow the other and limit its growth.

Tarrant explains that alder grows extremely well in mixed conifer stands and actually aids the conifers, since alder is a deciduous tree and the decaying leaves add nitrogen to the soil. That nitrogen is then used by the conifers.

In its long and successful organization, the NHA has struggled with various degrees of success to convince private, State and Federal landowners that the hardwood industry of the Northwest is a viable industry and must not only be preserved but accelerated. More than 8,000 people are responsible for total sales of over 375 million dollars and a payroll of over 80 million dollars. Secret of a Wood Staln

It was sometime in 1977 that a brilliant scientist, who held PhD's in physics and nuclear physics, was having a quiet drink in a Colorado bar with friends who were manufacturers of a high line of furniture. When told that the well known brand of wood stain they used was made from a secret formula, the physicist scoffed and stated that there were no secrets in chemistry. To prove his point, he later chemically analyzed the famous brand product, and was not sur-

prised to find the "secret formula" was no more than a combination of linseed oil, analine dyes and solvents.

When he reported his laboratory findings to his friends, they dared him to devise a superior product, a challenge he readily accepted. He was told the product should penetrate, seal, dry fast, have minimum "bleeding" and odor, be easily applied, and be stable enough to allow lacquers and varnishes to be sprayed over.

un an existing formula, the scientist, after substantial and deliberate experimentation, came up with a penetrating oil finish (hence the name, Penofin).

Thus satisfied, he promptly sold and relinquished formulation rights to his friends. In 1979, a small group of investors purchased the Penofin Co. and moved operations to a warehouse in Sacramento, Ca.

The entrepreneurs, professionals in their own fields, manufactured and packaged their product on nights and weekends for two years. Finally, in June, 1981, a production agreement was reached with a West Coast paint manufacturer.

The formula was oipanded to provide for exterior as well as interior usage. Both field and weatherometer testing have proven that Penofin now is an excellent product for exterior usage. With a base of Brazilian rosewood oil, the product utilizes transparent pigments which allow the grain structure of wood to be seen. These coloring agents also provide a sunscreen that reportedly rejects over 90Vo of the ultraviolet rays thus preventing checking and discoloration. A mildew resistant agent provides further protection. Penofincomes in formulations for clear, cedar, marine and redwood applications.

An up-dated list of material available from the WBMA Learning Resource Center Library has been prepared. It includes training aids, audio/visuals,

home study courses, manuals, etc. There is a great deal of useful and valuable information in this library. Store owners and personnel are urged to use it.

Medical costs appear to be increasing at a rate of over 20v/o per year while the inflation rate for all costs of living is considerably less. This plus other factors has resulted in reports by many plans of insurance rate increases of over 4090. If you have experienced large increases in your plan, you may want to compare it with one of WBMA's plans. Our best plan (major medical-$50 deductible, 9090 pay) is $35.95 per month for employee only and $131.02 for the employee and entire family. Our second plan (major medical-$250 deductible, 8090 pay) is $26.49 for the employee only and $92.97 for the employee and entire family. For more complete details, please call the WBMA office. Also, for your information, our weekly time loss benefits have been up-graded. Two plans are available: $150 per week level plan, and $350 - $250 - $150 per week for

executives, key personnel and others respectively. Both plans pay up to 26 weeks per disability, and the cost is 38c per month per $10 of benefit.

If you can answer "yes'' to any of the following, you could have considerable weakness in your accounts receivable.

o Do you have accounts which divulge only unaudited figures and give you incomplete financial statements?

a Do you get postdated checks?

o Havethere been judgments brought by other creditors against any of your accounts?

o Are your customers selling their receivables to third parties?

o Are they failing to take advantage of discounts for early paYment?

o Is there considerable turnover at your customer's office?

a Are you getting increasing inquiries about your customer's creditworthiness?

a Are customer's plants and equiPment showing signs of neglect?

o Are you getting sudden, unusually large orders? (This may indicate that the party has been cut off by other suppliers, probably not without good reason')

o Have the customer's credit ratings been lowered by the agencies?

Lumber Hauling Trend Reverses

Reversing a trend of increased shipments of Western lumber by truck, the railroads carried 42.5c/o of the lumber shipped from the West in the first half of 1982. This represents an increase of l.7s/o over l98l and the first time the railroads have increased their share since 1967.

Trucks slipped 0.990 from l98l totals to 53.790 while waterborne dropped from 4.690 in 1981 to 3.8q0.

Calling the shift to rails a strong endorsement by Western sawmills of the recent competitive pricing moves by rail carriers, Jim Manning, director of transportation for the Western Wood Products Association, said "Hopefully, the days are over of the railroads taking their Western lumber customers for granted, by passing on one percentage rate hike after another.

"The gains made by the railroads are even more significant when you consider the marketplace is demanding smaller, quicker shipments, which the trucks should be able to handle better. It will be interesting to see what competitive response, if any, the truckers will have to this," he added.

Masonite's New Offspring

The recent spin-off of Masonite Corporation timberlands and mills to a new company owned bY Masonite stockholders is not expected to materiaily affect the supply of forest products from their Western lands for several years, according to company spokesmen.

Unlike their Southern proPerties, which lend themselves to being sold piecemeal because of the fragmented nature of the firm's facilities in that area, the Western properties would more likely be sold intact to a single buyer. The presently depressed state of the forest products business presents no current buyers and so-called natural resource stocks are now generally out of favor with the investment community.

The western properties consist of 106,000 acres of timberlands; aPproximately 97,000 acres in Mendocino County and 8,700 in Sonoma County. There are two mills: one in Calpella and one in Cloverdale, Ca. The operations in the West are expected to run 2-3 Years without depleting the value of the timberlands. The Northern California

timberlands are professionally managed for long range forestry goals and are considered one of the country's best examples of forest management. Of a total 1,458,000,000 board feet of timber, 949,000,(X)0 is in redwood.

The decision to sell off the Masonite assets is believed to have been triggered by a desire by Masonite management to avoid an unwelcome corporate suitor, attracted bY the currently low valuation of the lands and mills. The company also has stated that the lands produced a higher quality wood than was needed for their hardboard manufacturing operations.

The value of the lands has been severely depressed this year. In May, the book value of all the Masonite lands was put at $39.8 million, a mere 7 .Ss/o of its appraised value.

Timber Realization Company is the name of the limited partnershiP established to hold and eventually sell the properties. lts units were proportionately divided among Masonite shareholders and three Masonite board members direct the limited partnership. It has in turn contracted

The Merchant Magazine

with a management companY, Woodland Services Co., to operate and find buyers for the proPerties. It anticipates achieving its goal of selfliquidation for the benefit of its shareholders by 1987.

Hardwood Facelilt for Plane

Hardwood is found in many breathtaking applications, often in exotic locations, but few of these offer the challenge of decorating the interior of an aircraft with beautiful woods.

The executive aircraft pictured here, a Boeing 727 based in Houston, Tx., meets the challenge with a flourish. Using a floor plan devised by those who fly in it, an aircraft interior design specialist created a luxurious, comfortable airborne apartment for working or relaxing.

Hardwood was a natural for the paneling, cabinets and furniture. Straight grain ash and ash burl were selected to be used with special considerations. Because of the weight restrictions, most of the wood used was veneer, applied to aluminum honeycomb with special adhesives. Burl figures were used on table tops, doors, moulding, cabinet inlays and for inlaid designs on mirrored doors. Solid mouldings were used only on the table edges because of the weight. Straight grain ash veneer was used to panel walls and cabinets as well as in lath applied vertically to mirrored walls.

Hand rubbed oil finishes were applied to all woods. Because the air-

craft is exposed to extreme climates, such as a desert landing strip with heat in excess of 130o or an airfield in Anchorage, Ak., with subzero temperatures, the wood requires constant upkeep to prevent checks and cracks.

Aircraft decorating requires cautions other than weight limitation and care of woods. All latches must be stressed to pull 9 x weight. To meet regulations a drawer with contents weighing 20 pounds must have a 180 pound latch. An aircraft hardware specialist provided the hardware with many touch catches used.

The floor plan includes a bedroom, several powder rooms, a small kitchen, work and conference space, a dining area and lounge accommodations. Even the cockpit has been glamorized with furry seats for the pilot and co-pilot.

LUXURIOUS setting is created with straight grain and burl ash veneers in this executive aircraft. Mirrored walls with ash lath and mirrored doors (upper photo) give an illusion of space and light. Cabinet (lower photo) opens into a fully stocked wet bar. The Boeing 727 has been turned into a flying apartment complete with bedroom and kitchenette.

"In tests we have made with ultra-violet exposure," according to Dave McCullam, Northwest Hardwood, Inc., Portland, Or., "We found that Western alder had less color change than most other furniture wood."

For this reason more alder is being used in furniture. Maple, hackberry, cherry and mahogany tend to darken with exposure to sunlight while walnut becomes lighter, he feels.

Presidential Hardwood Floor

President Ronald Reagan's Oval Office in the White House now has a beautiful hardwood floor made possible with the cooperation and generosity of several hardwood firms.

Kentucky Wood Floors and Wood Mosaics, Louisville, KY., Chester B. Stem Inc., New Albany, In., and Rode Brothers, Los Angeles, Ca., were all involved in the gift which replaced a temporary vinyl floor that had been installed during the early Nixon years to replace the cork floor of the Roosevelt era.

According to John Stern, pres. of Kentucky Wood Floors, the quartered white oak and walnut flooring is worth $20,000. His company Prepared the wood which was donated by Wood Mosaics and Stem. Rode Brothers installed the mitered plank design.

Moulding-Millwork Meeting

Traditional homebuilders entering the remodeling business are having a difficult time adjusting to the differences between the two industries.

The Merchant Magazine explained that the home builder has had a problem adjusting to the bidding and quoting of remodeling jobs since a ?nslo profit is adequate in home building while remodeling requires a minimum of 46s/o to stay in business.

John Ward, National Forest Products Association, Washington' D.C., predicted U.S. wood exPorts increasing to a possible $7 billion by 1990, a 9390 increase, with the U.S. market expanding. Don Danka, Koppers Co., Inc., discussed a new water-based preservative which is expected to replace the pentachlorophenol product presentlY in use. Other speakers, touched on the s&l industry, the current economY, and energy efficiency.

The 2lst annual meeting will be Feb. 17-20 at Rancho Bernardo Resort, San Diego, Ca., according to Neal Heflin, executive director.

CUST0M-MADE quarter white oak and walnut in the desiqn shown above has been installed in the oval 0ffice of the White House. All but a four ft. border of the 1,000 sq. ft. floor will be covered by carpeting, according to Rex Scouten, chief usher l0r the White House.

Surveys nnd morket studies: ManY retailers are getting a handle on where they are positioned in their market place by surveying their customers in store and by phoning or mailing questionnaires to homes in their market area. They find it's best to have the preparation, administration and interpretation of these surveys done by an outside source such as a market research company, the local newspaper's research department or the research facilities available at most colleges and universities' Researchers suggest that the retailers survey their own employees, too-and be prepared for some surprises.

2Vo for cash: Taking the lead from the major gasoline companies who are now offering a three price option to drivers (full service, self serve credit card and self serve cash), one midwest building material chain is installing new cash registers that are programmed to deduct 290 for cash. They'll be promoting heavily in the ads.

(By the way, many consider R.H. Macy's to be the flrst discount house. Prior to World War II their slogan was 690 less for cash.)

Why Should The IRS Be An Heir?

A report just released by the Independent Business Institute, of Akron, Ohio, points out that with double-digit inflation, the value of a business doubles every 6 to 8 years from inflation alone; true growth speeds the increase in value, pushing the owner's estate into highly taxed brackets. Yet most estate-tax planning techniques do little to reduce taxes; they merely shift the burden to current expenses or create a gift-tax liability. Standard estate-planning arrangements simply are ineffective in a period of soaring inflation.

Gifting stock ownership of a business is a popular tactic. Between the owner and hiswife.$20,000 worth of stock can be given annually to an heir/successor. But if lhe business is worth, say $500,000, inflation pushes its value up far faster than it can be given away! At l5qo inflation, the owner would have to have a dozen heirs just to catch up with inflation. Gifting is fine as far as it goes; it just does not go far enough.

Another popular arrangement is to have one or more successor heirs buy the owner's stock. This means giving them a raise and letting them use the extra money to buy the stock. But stock purchases are not deductible; they are made with after tax dollars. For every one the owner gets, the IRS gets another. This becomes totally impractical for a business of any significant value.

Another version is to give some stock to the heir, then the owner gradually sells his own stock back to the business. But the objection is the same: Stock is always purchased with after-tax dollars. In this case, after the business taxation. Once again, for every dollar the owner gets (which is taxable), the IRS gets another.

Trusts form an extremely complex subject, but stripped to basics, a trust is a legal entity, just like a corporation. Gifting stock to a trust which will hold it on behalf of heirs was once a very popular scheme. But gifts to a trust are taxable. Further, the owner loses control of the business when 5l9o of the stock has gone into the trust. If he retains vicarious control by being the trust executor, thetrust itself has an estate-tax obligation. Just as bad, the trust must be irrevocable to be of value-and

the laws are changeable! A trust can become a horrible trap as the laws change.

Preferred-stock schemes are common; generally they involve giving the heirs nonvoting common stock and then trading the owner's common for voting preferred. But the value follows the controlling vote; when the owner retains the vote its value will be taxed at estate time. Worse yet, the income on the preferred is taxed as a dividend-not deductible by the business, and highly taxed as received. This is

merely an IRS enrichment scheme.

Insurance-funded buyouts come in many variations, but the insurance generally goes to pay taxes and eliminate a stockholder (the deceased). Years ago, this worked. But with l59o inflation, it is impractical. At 1590, everything doubles in value every 5.5 years: 4X in I I years, 8X in 16.5 years, l6X in 22 years. Who can afford to buy insurance to cover the taxes at those valuations? The only technique which appears (Please turn to page 37)

The latest status symbol: a teak bathtub

If you think you have seen the ultimate in rich, luxurious living, you haven't seen a teakwood bathtub.

Handcrafted of 150 pieces of teak, like a magnificent piece of inlay, the indoor designer tub has a starburst pattern in the bottom and a choice of strip or starburst pattern on the rim. Three styles of splash rails allow it to be used sunken or raised, surrounded on one, two, three or zero sides.

Polyurethane coating protects the wood while giving it additional luster and color. Fiberglass sheathing on the outside adds structural strength and insulates to keep the bathwater hot. Recessed main drains and overflows are pre-drilled for fittings of the owner's choice. Optional is a pre-plumbed recirculating system which includes four brushed brass therapy jets and a brushed brass suction drain.

The tub also is available in oak or exotic hardwoods. Alpine oak and eucalyptus are offered for those on a lower budget. Shower fanciers can select a handcrafted teakwood or white oak shower floor with polished brass or A carat gold plated drains.

This is available in any size with a side or center drain.

An indoor/outdoor hardwood 80" spa comes standard with five 14 carat gold hydro therapy jets. It is available in the same woods as the bathtub.

According to the manufacturer, Peregrine lndustries, Inc. of California, located in San Rafael, this is the only wooden bathtub permitted by building codes in the United States. They offer a two year structural warranty on all products.

HARDWOOD FRANCHISE

(Continued from page 14) would have to buy a truckload of the same species to get a discount.

"Most of our money is tied up in inventory," says Lomax who adds that they have little overhead because the store is owner financed and free from bank loan finance charges.

Although selling mostly oak, like everyone else, Lomax and Brown don't hesitate to show customers woods they might not be familiar with like koa, mesua, cocobolo or zebra.

Offering over 50 species of wood at present, ranging from the standard domestic to the rare exotics, they hope some day to have the warehouse stocked with 200 species. This variety of wood has paid off. Whenever a new shipment comes in, Brown calls a list of customers who will come to browse for hours at a time. Then they buy.

While many dealers shy away from the exotic woods because of the big investment and slim profit margin, Brown wants this type of wood available to his customers because it is so appealing.

The owners'goals for the shop are to continue to build their inventory, expand the wholesale business, but not phase out retailing, start educational programs with shop instructors, begin to carry hand and power tools for fine woodworking and possibly open other stores in the Southern California area.

Brown explains, "There's a group I call the therapy group, people who have stressful jobs and want to do things with their hands. Woodworking is relaxing and creative-it gives them a sense of accomplishment." For this reason, the store will continue to cater to the retail customer. In the future they hope to provide plans for projects in addition to materials and tools.

"There's a new generation of d-iyers and people who are getting sick of plastics," Lomax comments on the future of hardwood. "Only our imagination is going to limit us-not the market."

"lnvest In Home" Campaign

Building material dealers across the nation are launching "Invest In Your Home," a campaign designed to encourage homeowners to "Do-ItYourself."

Announcing the program, the National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association emphasized that this promotion campaign was developed by people involved in the building material retail business who are familiar with the types of advertising, radio commercials, brochures

and other sales items which can be effectively used by dealers.

Initiated by Michigan Lumber and Building Materials Association, the objective is to inform the consumer that their best return on investment today is an investment in their own home. With the prices of lumber and building materials at record lows, the home owner has an opportunity with relatively low investment to substantially increase the value of their Iargest single investment, their home.

Brochures announcing the program were mailed to dealers who

The Merchant Magazine

began ordering promotional kits in early August. Dealers were being encouraged to prepare to launch the program September I and run it for six weeks. Following the initial effort, dealer participants will be surveyed to determine the success of the effort with the idea that an updated version of the program could be launched early in 1983.

The idea has been packaged into a promotion kit for both large and small lumber dealers. The kit contains such promotional items as a large outdoor banner, 120 ft. of colorful pennants, special tags plus prepared cassette radio commercials and 12 newspaper ads. The promotional kit is priced to lumber dealers at less than $90 and contains 4 pages of "How to get the most out of your 'Invest In Your Home'merchandising kit."

Anyone wanting more information on the program, contact your state Lumber and Building Material Association or Jack Robbins. Secretary-Manager of the Michigan Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association, 4215 N. Grand River, Lansing, Mi. 48917, (517) 321-8668.

More $ lor Home lmprovement

Home improvement is one of the most commonly mentioned purchases when consumers are asked how they will use the discretionary money from the tax rate reduction.

No substantial increase in shortterm durable purchasing is expected since the additional money received through higher take-home pay will be less than $50 for most households. In the long term, it is anticipated that the tax cut will provide an increase in consumer spending.

to offer protection against inflation, control for the present owners, and elimination of estate taxes is a longterm buyout (installment sale) of the business to the heir or heirs. Generally, the heir sets up a corporation to make the purchase, and hires the present owner as its president or treasurer, with a noncancellable, life-time employment contract. This maintains the owner's effective control (which is as it should be) and gives him life+ime (or long-term) income. Then the heir's corporation buys out the parent's business over l0 to 20 years, using the cash flow to make the payments. The terms of the father's employment contract let him cancel the deal if he changes his mind, tax laws change, or anything else goes wrong. The owner gets total inflation protection, no estate taxes on the business, no increase in income-taxes, full operating control over the business, and ability to cancel the deal.

Dedicated or Dishonest?

An employee in your company's shipping and receiving department who reports early to work or stays late might be dedicated but don't rule out deceitful.

Also be suspicious of quick deliveries or dispatches from unmarked vehicles. It's not unusual for a ring of thieves, operating right under the nose of security to steal goods and have them fenced before anything can be done.

In your accounting and purchasing division, look out for increased writeoffs, tardy bookkeeping, and unaccounted for checks or invoices. Kickbacks from suppliers could result in a business being shortchanged while shady employees have plenty of pocket change. Accepting new suppliers and their bids keeps everyone honest.

Stay Warm

The new model Forester fireplace insert heaters from the United States Stove Co. feature see-through ceramic glass doors and cast iron construction.

The fireplace insert heater will burn either wood or coal with an optional variable-speed blower to draw cool room air in. Installation is said to take only one hour since the stove is shipped fully assembled except for the trim.

Naillt Down

Duo-Fast Corp. has a variety of nailers and staplers for professional use.

The IN-125 coil-fed nailer drives 16 different nails from 2" through 2V2", operating on an air pressure range of 70 to 120 psig and designed for wood assembly of all kinds. A special attachment allows it to drive smooth-shank aluminum nails to exterior aluminum siding.

The smaller IN-124 model, useful in construction of pallets, box spring

frames and large containers, drives 26 different nails from I % " through 2V4".

Model IN-123 drives 18 different nails from lVr" to l7 /8" and is used for making furniture and most small wood-product assemblies.

The CN-325 nailer uses only .075 cu. in. of free air per stroke at 80 psig, and, according to the corporation, is a real savings for builders who rely on portable air compressors at the jobsite. It drives a 3Vq" nail into flakeboard at I l0 psig. The tool is used for floor and wall framing, windows and floor backs, and trussing.

Pneumatic MS-7664 staplers drive l6-gauge, galvanized staples in lengths up to 2" into hardwood at a rate of more than 6 per second, and can be programmed for sequential firing. Fully enclosed to eliminate dirt buildup, the stapler holds two strips of 60 staples each and has a dual-action, safety mechanism.

Stapler RS-1748 is designed for roofing applications. Compact 10" high, and engineered for one hand operation, it drives seven sizes of gauge l " crown staples ranging in size from Vz" to lVz" .ln addition to attaching asphalt shingles it is also used for butt joints, wall sheathing, and floor bottom insulation in mobile homes.

High Security Deadbolt

An armored deadbolt by National Lock Hardware is reportedly police tested to stand up under the most severe intruder attack. It features a hardened steel cylinder interlock screw that clamps the lock firmly and an exterior cylinder guard that anchors the interlock and shields the lock's inner mechanism.

Second Growth is growing ever stronger

GIECOND Growth, a 35 and -under group within the Lumber Association of Southern California, is nearing the end of its seventh year with an admirable track record of accomplishments and contributions to the association.

The group started as an item on the agenda of the November, 1975, LASC Management Conference board meeting. Brought to this meeting by Chuck Jenkins and Wayne Gardner, it was an idea already proven successful for other area associations. With the board's enthusiastic support, member Jenkins and Gardner, LASC's executive v.p., went about organizing a "35 and under" group, then to be called Young Westerners.

The first official meeting, after the nucleus was formed, was in May of 1976. The evening speaker, Frank Purcell, spoke of the roles and op-

portunities for young people in our industry.

It was at this meeting the name Second Growth came into being. Nominated by Blaine Smith, Second Growth was adopted to replace Young Westerners.

Since the beginning, Second Growth has had an annual summer seminar. This affords members an opportunity to visit on an informal

"From Les Anderson of Random Lengths, to John Grodan's selling theories, to, most recently, Art Mortell's personal glowth seminars, these programs have offered tangible ideas and methods for betterment on a personal and business level," notes John Newquist, Second Growth's current v.p.

Another tradition brought about by Second Growth is the Panel presentation for the Annual Management Conference. [n 1976 two of four panel members were part of Second Growth. Dealers Praise Computers

A survey of building material dealers has found computers most valuable in inventory control and accounts receivable control.

Other vital contributions are better management information and enhanced decision-making. Dealers also cited computer systems for im-

proving gross profit reporting, reducing paper errors, smoothing paper flow and enabling updated pricing.

Dealers were enthusiastic about computerization and predicted that 50 to 75q0 of all dealers in the field would use computers by 1990, up from 2590 now.

Other results of the survev bv the

o Pay-back period for computers is about two years.

o Gross profit margin improved 2Vo al the average dealer.

o Inventory was reduced about l49o (items) and l39o (dollars).

o Inventory turns increased about 1.5 times.

o Receivables were trimmed about 1390.

o Most dealers spent six months to a year studying computer systems.

(Continued .f'ront page 54) improve, all things an association requires, are present, Newquist stresses. To provide an avenue for these desires, the quality of Second Crowth's programs keep increasing.

"The purpose and usefulness of this organization is best answered by looking to its membership," Newquist adds. "What employer would not benefit by having their associates active in this creative atmosphere?"
