In almost no time, Stormzy has developed from a street rascal into a role model. The activist raps by the grime king of London are artillery ammo for a generation that will no longer allow itself to be hobbled by the little old white Brexit men. — TOM PEETERS Last year, Time Magazine proclaimed Stormzy to be one of the ten Next Generation Leaders. It was not Greta Thunberg, but the black British rapper who made the cover. That makes his report card better than that of the left-wing Labour figurehead Jeremy Corbyn, whose political campaigns Stormzy has been supporting for the past few years. But that will not silence the tirades that he regularly directs at the conservative Brexit government – he recently declared that the United Kingdom has become more racist during Boris Johnson’s premiership. Michael Ebenazer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr. grew up in South East London with a Ghanaian mother, brother, and two sisters. More than a talented MC who picked his raw rhymes up off the street and then set them to dark beats, he is a man on a mission. In February 2017, at the release of his debut Gang Signs & Prayer, the first grime album to reach number one in the British charts, he was still considered the pacesetter of a genre. His career has skyrocketed since then. Last summer, his first number one single “Vossi Bop” was rewarded with the legendary headline set at

Glastonbury, the first time for a black solo artist. It was apparently inspired by Beyoncé’s iconic performance at Coachella: “Not in terms of sound or look, but in terms of quality and impact.” The track “Own It” off his second record, Heavy Is the Head, which was released in December, features both Ed Sheeran and Burna Boy, a white and a black mainstream hero, as though he is seeking to reinforce his statements about racial inequality. If concerts are a fruitful outlet for social activism, then black empowerment is also a life motto offstage. Take, for example, the deal that he has made with Penguin to support British writers with migrant backgrounds and a foundation that he has established to send black British students to Cambridge University. This is how the street rascal who started rapping when he was eleven and later went viral with the freestyles that he put to grime beats (and on YouTube) is really making a difference at twenty-six. Nouvelle égérie du R&B, la chanteuse belge a toutes les cartes en main pour être la sensation de l’année. Entre chanson et hip-hop, abnégation et amour du risque, l’artiste danse sur les pas de Stromae avec style et détermination. — NICOLAS ALSTEEN Le parcours de Marie-Pierra Kakoma impose le respect. Celle qui s’apprête à publier son premier album sous l’alias Lous and the Yakuza semble, en effet, avoir traversé plusieurs vies avant d’entrevoir les promesses du succès. Trimballée entre Congo, Belgique et Rwanda jusqu’à l’adolescence, elle s’est juré de percer dans la musique. Qu’importent le trajet et ses embûches... Parce qu’en suivant ses intuitions, la jeune fille s’est retrouvée à la rue, squattant la couette en compagnie de ses rêves et d’autres SDF. Mais, du genre à ne rien lâcher, elle s’est accrochée à ses ambitions pour faire entendre sa voix. Après plus de 300 concerts dans les bars de Bruxelles et d’ailleurs, l’artiste s’est forgé un caractère et un nom de scène affûté comme le sabre d’un samouraï. Lous and the Yakuza s’est essayée à tous les styles avant de trouver son identité artistique. Au croisement du rap et de la chanson française, de l’électro et de l’afro-futurisme, elle pose des mots sur ses émotions et commence à faire parler d’elle. L’ami Damso, d’abord, l’invite à participer au clip de Bruxelles Vie.

Après avoir précipité l’éclosion de Roméo Elvis, les gars de L’Or du Commun lui apportent ensuite amour et soutien. Femme moderne, sûre de ses qualités et de son engagement, l’artiste s’affirme en décembre 2017 à travers une session acoustique diffusée via YouTube. La vidéo suscite l’enthousiasme du public et l’excitation des professionnels. Habile avec les mots, agile avec le flow, Lous and the Yakuza ne va pas sans rappeler les débuts de Stromae. Venues de France et de Navarre, les maisons de disques se bousculent alors au portillon. En attendant, la chanteuse trace le bitume aux côtés de producteurs tels que Ponko (Hamza) ou El Guincho (Rosalía). Le clip du morceau Dilemme empile les millions de vues, des fans crient au génie en Italie, au Canada ou en Turquie. BEN LAMAR GAY EN/ INTANGIBLE. The easiest thing is to call Ben Lamar Gay’s music jazz, but the freebooter from Chicago defies all categorization. BASTARD. De Britse soulzangeres met Jamaicaanse roots lijkt op een nieuw decennium gewacht te hebben om de wereld met pure emoties te overweldigen. — TOM PEETERS Na voorprogramma’s voor pakweg Neneh Cherry in Brighton, waar ze opgroeide, en Janelle Monáe in Berlijn was ook haar set als openingsact van Michael Kiwanuka vorige herfst in de Ancienne Belgique een voltreffer. Gelukkig krijgen zij die er toen niet bij konden zijn dit jaar alle gelegenheid om de muziek van Celeste te ontdekken. Momenteel werkt ze aan een eerste langspeler en straks staat ze op Les Nuits. Twee ep’s heeft ze voorlopig uit. De eerste, The milk & the honey, verscheen in 2017 via het onafhankelijke label van Lily Allen, maar zorgde niet meteen voor de doorbraak. Pas toen Celeste onderdak kreeg bij major Polydor vielen alle puzzelstukjes op hun plaats. Het pakkende ‘Both sides of the moon’ werd de blauwdruk voor de ep Lately, die haar internationaal lanceerde. “I lost Amy, but I’ve found Celeste,” postte iemand onder een liveversie van het nummer op YouTube. Daarmee niet alleen doelend op de gelijkenissen tussen de rokerige soulstemmen van Celeste en Amy Winehouse, en hun sensuele, aan verduisterde jazzclubs

schatplichtige geluid, maar ook voorspellend hoe Celeste weleens dat talent zou kunnen zijn zoals er maar één per generatie opstaat. Celeste Epiphany Waite werd gevormd door het kerkkoor waar haar Britse moeder haar als kind elke week mee naartoe nam, en de liedjes van Tammi Terrell, Otis Redding en Aretha Franklin die ze thuis steevast meezong. Haar eigen soul is traditioneel en puur, ze springt zorgvuldiger om met elektronische accenten dan haar generatiegenoten. Met Paul Weller nam ze een hartverscheurende versie van diens ‘You do something to me’ op, een mix van kracht en breekbaarheid, hét handelsmerk van de zangeres. Ze is nog maar 25, maar slaagt er toch in om ook in haar eigen werk te klinken als een getormenteerde ziel, getuige het intimistische ‘Strange’, de eerste single waarmee ze tijdens de kerstperiode voorlopig nog schoorvoetend in de Belgische hitparade opdook. Hoe divers de artistieke projecten van Maxim Storms ook mogen zijn, ze getuigen alle van een liefde voor het absurde en een permanent onderzoek van gesproken taal en lichaamstaal. In de van de pot gerukte jeugdvoorstelling Klutserkrakkekilililokatastrof van zijn gezelschap Ballet Dommage werd een hilarische mix van Italiaans, Duits en West-Vlaams gesproken. In Storms’ solo Brother blue klonk hij als een psychiatrische patiënt op repeat. Zijn bizarre motoriek doet denken aan een hortende marionet. De Standaard noemde hem de Chaplin van deze generatie. Wij denken eerder aan Buster Keaton en Jerry Lewis. Si avec Elenit, Euripides Laskaridis a poursuivi l’expansion de son univers, en étoffant sa troupe d’interprètes et en développant ses décors, il reste fidèle à son imaginaire bricolé, composé de matériaux récupérés et détournés de leur fonction. Dans ce nouveau spectacle, le performeur et metteur en scène interprète une fantasque diva au long nez. Une créature qui virevolte et glisse sous sa blonde perruque et sa robe de taffetas en vieux rose, babillant dans

une langue incompréhensible. Autour d’elle, un dragon chantant, une fillette aux souliers rouges frappée de narcolepsie et une cohorte de petits bonshommes chauves interchangeables. Entre le spectacle de danse, de cirque et la revue de cabaret, ils nous invitent dans un univers sombre et scintillant, drôle et inquiétant où tout est possible, surtout le rêve. Les tableaux se succèdent, les personnages et les décors se métamorphosent entre ombres et lumières au son d’une musique qui pulse comme elle respire. C’est un univers parallèle qui n’a ni passé ni futur, juste un imprévisible présent. Si ce freak show s’habille de quelques effets spéciaux et d’illusions d’optique, on y voit aussi une machinerie toute simple héritée de Méliès et des spectacles de magie, qui laisse voir l’envers du décor. Het Antwerpse gezelschap FC Bergman schuwt de grote theatrale bewegingen en de barokke beeldentaal niet. Hun ambitieuze werk toont hoe de kleine mens zijn uiterste best moet doen om niet tussen de raders van de wereldmachine te worden vermalen. — MICHAËL BELLON FC Bergman – opgericht in 2008 door Stef Aerts, Joé Agemans, Bart Hollanders, Matteo Simoni, Thomas Verstraeten en Marie Vinck – won in 2009 de Jong Theater Prijs op Theater Aan Zee met een bewerking van De thuiskomst van Harold Pinter, werd in 2010 geselecteerd voor het Nederlands Theater Festival met Wandelen op de Champs-Élysées, en brak internationaal door met de Terminator trilogie. Hun grootse locatievoorstellingen kregen een overtreffende trap met JR, dé blikvanger in het theaterprogramma van dit voorjaar. KVS werkte samen met onder andere Kaaitheater, De Munt, Théâtre National, en de cultuurcentra Westrand, Strombeek en De Factorij om het megaspektakel naar Paleis 12 op de Heizel te krijgen. Om te beginnen heeft JR een topcast. Theaterkoppel Marie Vinck en Stef Aerts regisseren onder meer Stijn Van Opstal, Gene Bervoets, Frank Focketeyn, Oscar Van Rompay, Jan Bijvoet, Geert Van Rampelberg, Junior Mthombeni, Imke Mol, Elle-June Henrard,

Brussel krijgt vier voorstellingen van telkens vier uur voor 1.200 toeschouwers voorgeschoteld, na eerdere speelbeurten in Gent, Antwerpen, Amsterdam en Parijs. Het decor is een torengebouw van veertien meter hoog waar het publiek omheen zit. Twee cameramannen lopen continu op en neer en heen en weer om de actie te capteren. Door de projectie op de vier wanden van het gebouw krijg je zo een labyrintische combinatie van theater en livecinema. Ces vingt dernières années, l’actrice bruxelloise Lubna Azabal a joué dans une quarantaine de films et neuf séries télévisées. Adam nous rappelle qu’elle travaille dur mais aussi qu’elle a la classe requise pour porter un film. — NIELS RUËLL Lubna Azabal a-t-elle fait un mauvais choix en interprétant la méchante Myriam dans la deuxième saison de La Trêve ou en jouant une policière déterminée dans le film policier belge Tueurs ? Bien sûr que non. Était-ce une erreur de jouer un rôle secondaire dans Mary Magdalene avec Rooney Mara et Joaquin Phoenix ? Ou d’enchaîner, après ce film biblique américain, avec le film du Bruxellois Bas Devos Hellhole ? Bien sûr que non. Mais il faut avouer que c’est un plaisir de la revoir endosser le rôle principal dans Adam. Comme elle l’avait déjà fait dans Incendies du Canadien Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Blade Runner 2049), Loin du brillant conteur André Téchiné ou Exils de Tony Gatlif. Dans Adam, Azabal prête ses yeux sombres et perçants à une veuve et mère de famille qui tient une boulangerie dans la médina de Casablanca. La vie d’Abla change du tout au

tout quand elle décide de prendre sous son aile Samia, enceinte (Nisrin Erradi). Cette jeune femme n’est pas mariée et craint pour la suite. Ensemble, elles optent pour la fuite. Adam est le premier film de Maryam Touzani qui a pu compter pour le scénario et la production sur le soutien de son mari Nabil Ayouch, le réalisateur des films primés Much Loved et Razzia. La foi de Touzani dans le pouvoir expressif et la beauté simple des images a été récompensée : le film a été sélectionné à la compétition Un Certain Regard du Festival de Cannes. D’après le magazine américain Variety, Adam va charmer les amateurs d’art et d’essai du monde entier « grâce à des personnages exceptionnels qui ont l’occasion de briller ». Was Lady Bird beginner’s luck? Not on your life. The stirring Little Women is arriving soon and confirms the talent of the great Greta Gerwig. — NIELS RUËLL Because there wasn’t a single arts school that would admit Greta Gerwig, she abandoned the plan in 2006 and decided to become a playwright. She studied English and philosophy at Barnard College, a women’s university in New York. In the meantime, she collaborated on a series of improvised and mumbled no-budget films that were labelled mumble core. She acted, came up with storylines, held the camera, or worked as a boom operator. Mumblecore acquired esteem and Gerwig became the cute face of the movement. Hannah Takes the Stairs came to the attention of none other than Noah Baumbach. The director of The Squid and the Whale (and now also Marriage Story) coupled Gerwig with Ben Stiller in the dramedy Greenberg. She worked miracles with the generally lame role of a sweet girl and conquered Baumbach’s heart. In 2012, the couple released Frances Ha, an Annie Hall for and starring millennials.

Roles in Mistress America by Baumbach, Jackie by Pablo Larraín, and 20th Century Women by Mike Mills confirmed Gerwig’s status as the muse of alternative American film. The only thing is that she did not want to inspire but create. The incredibly hard worker wrote and directed a film about the turbulent relationship between a mother and a spirited daughter who yearns for a grander life. Lady Bird was hailed by the film press and was nominated for five Oscars. Its follow-up Little Women – the compelling adaptation of the 19th-century novel of the same name by Louisa May Alcott – might do even better. De Brusselse schrijver Frederik Willem Daem opent in maart café De Kauw. Ga er zeker een pint drinken (of een icetea) en luister mee naar zijn Tekens van leven. — MICHAËL BELLON Drie jaar na zijn veelgeprezen en met een Debuutprijs bedachte verhalenbundel Zelfs de vogels vallen geeft Frederik Willem Daem opnieuw een teken van leven. De Brusselse schrijver komt namelijk boven water om zijn debuutroman Tekens van leven te presenteren. En dat gebeurt niet op de geijkte manier met een avondje voorlezen. Samen met Passa Porta maakt Frederik Willem Daem er een evenement van dat vier dagen duurt. Tekens van leven kwam dan ook tot stand na liefst drie jaar research en participerend onderzoek van de schrijver. Al die tijd schuimde hij de ene na de andere kroeg af om er te schrijven tot het laatste rondje gegeven en opgedronken was. Dat alles leverde meer dan voldoende inspiratie voor een verhaal dat zich afspeelt in het fictieve café De Kauw, waar het verdampte en weer gecondenseerde zweet van menige dansavond zich vermengt met de verpieterde restjes Long Island icetea, en de vloer ’s ochtends nog plakt van het een paar uur eerder gemorste bier.

Ter gelegenheid van de boekvoorstelling wordt café De Kauw uit het boek gedurende vier dagen een echt café in de stad. In wat doorgaans bekendstaat als café Tropicana in de Lakensestraat, kan je minstens tot middernacht terecht voor Long Island iceteas en pintjes. Dinsdagavond om 19 uur wordt het café ingehuldigd. Ook op woensdag en donderdag staan er aardigheidjes op het programma zoals een karaokesessie of een biljarttoernooi. De hele tijd door kan je ter plekke het boek kopen en lezen. Vrijdag heeft dan de eigenlijke boekvoorstelling plaats met een aantal performances die passen in de sfeer van het café littéraire, waaronder uiteraard ook het aantreden van de auteur zelf. EN/ FLIPPING THE MAP. What is a map, if not a representation of the world? Map-makers have much in common with artists, who also seek ways of mapping the world as it is or as they imagine it to be. CROSSING BORDERS. The curator of this exhibition is Alfred Pacquement, the former director of the Musée national d’art moderne at the Centre Pompidou. In it, he has gathered works by contemporary artists, from both East and West, who seek out fault lines, cross borders, and act like seismographs of social and ecological upheaval. When, close-up and casual, he began to photograph the raves and the alternative youth scene of London and Berlin in the 1980s and 1990s, Wolfgang Tillmans’s images had a way of bringing people together while also celebrating their differences. — GILLES BECHET Wolfgang Tillmans sees photography as an exchange, a social art form, in direct and empathic contact with reality. Through his portraits, still lifes, fashion photography, landscapes, and abstract compositions, he has never stopped asking himself what the true essence of photography is. A major artist, his work is somewhere between the detached gaze of German objective photography and the immersion in the margins of society practised by proponents of American subjective photography. Constantly evolving, his approach reflects a new contemporary subjectivity that combines personal engagement and critical detachment from the world, whose norms and social values he exposes with incisiveness. Resistant to all notions of continuity and visual and technical orthodoxy, his work transcends and alternates genres, subjects, techniques, from photocopy-

ing to infrared, and strategies for his exhibitions, which he always conceives as a coherent whole. With a form that seems to follow the rules of amateur photography of the kind that is generated spontaneously on social media, his work questions the validity of creating images in a visually oversaturated world. Playing with small and large formats, framed and unframed prints, accompanied by personal commentary, he makes his exhibitions into a complete work in which he explores the photographed image in relation to its status as an object. For his first monographic exhibition in Belgium, he has brought together groups of previously unseen photographs, video installations, and sound pieces. Sean Scully is the leading Irish American expressive, primarily abstract painter and sculptor who sometimes leaves his home in New York for a holiday on Eleuthera. AND PLAY. Eleuthera thus became the title of the small focus exhibition that is coming to the Royal Museums of Fine Arts from the Albertina in Vienna. Partners in crime Jos De Gruyter en Harald Thys bedienen zich van allerlei media om de toeschouwer met verstomming te slaan. In Bozar zetten ze een gestoorde versie van Bokrijk neer. — MICHAËL BELLON Jos De Gruyter en Harald Thys zijn al onafscheidelijk sinds de jaren 1980. Het eigenzinnige Brusselse duo pakte tijdens de recente Biënnale van Venetië in het statige Belgische Paviljoen uit met Mondo cane. Niets was wat het leek in de installatie waarvan de titel verwijst naar de pseudo-documentaire Italiaanse mondo-films, die in de jaren 1960 een in meerdere opzichten ‘fout’ beeld gaven van de mensheid op alle mogelijke plekken ter wereld. In zijn schandaalfilm Mondo cane koppelde regisseur Gualtero Jacopetti destijds wat antropologische aspiraties aan botte exploitatie van afwijkende gewoonten en gedragingen van individuen en gemeenschappen. De Gruyter en Thys lijken dat genre nu in te zetten tegen het Westen. Elektrisch aangedreven poppen demonstreren onder meer oude ambachten: de spinster, de pottenbakster, of de schilder geven de kijker de indruk in een folkloristisch

museum te zijn beland. Is dit het Europa van de toekomst, gezien door de ogen van toeristen die haken naar het verleden? In delen van het Belgische paviljoen in Venetië was het publiek ook van een aantal standbeelden gescheiden door tralies, die van de museale ruimte een gevangenis leken te maken. Bozar geeft de installatie nu een nieuw leven door de poppen op te stellen in de antichambres van het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten. Aangevuld met nieuwe elementen vormen ze daar een Hedendaags Museum voor Volkskunst. Ook de bijbehorende meertalige publicatie – een vreemdsoortige willekeurige catalogus van onze omwereld die deel uitmaakt van het werk – is te koop in Bozar.

Henk Visch is een gelauwerd Nederlands beeldhouwer, tekenaar en schilder wiens beelden te zien zijn van de Lage Landen tot Peking. CLASH. Noiret-Thomé nodigde Visch uit in het kader van de internationale werking van de Centrale, waarbij een Brusselse en een internationale kunstenaar in duo worden gepresenteerd. Benieuwd wat de clash tussen de niet van humor gespeende vitalisten op de grens van het figuratieve en abstracte oplevert.
