am quite the balanced individual, dear reader. Both my feet are planted firmly on the ground and I rarely dabble in the intoxications produced by drink and drugs. But there are times when even I struggle. What is responsible for these moments of existential instability? The stress of choosing. Drop me in an aisle full of toilet paper or jam, and I’m lost. Satin or four-ply, chunky or smooth... I am a man of possibilities, and when I have to choose, my mind is occupied most by what I might lose. Enter the place in my heart for Renton, the low life with a sweet tooth for brown sugar from the mordant but hilarious Trainspotting. There is a lot of competition – the Kinder Surprise wrapped in sheets, the floaters and sinkers in a grimy Scottish toilet – but what most struck the still very impressionable me was Renton’s raw and uncut tirade that he gave while Iggy Pop stuffed pepper and an urgent lust for life up his ass. Choose life, or not as the case may be. Be gone, stress of choosing. The anti-conformist inhabitant of my heart is wading through Scottish shite for a second time now. But while in 1996, Renton was still plunging head-long into an attack on the fundamental values of a society slowly shuffling towards the grave – low cholesterol, fixed-interest mortgage repayments, or mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows – the now forty-something is repeating the feat rather flatly with a watered-down speech about Facebook, reality TV, and slut shaming. Has the ranter become a whiner? Is there an expiry date on crackhead cool? In Renton’s defence: what choice do we actually have? Choosing between cholera and the plague? Sodom and Gomorra? Perhaps instead of choosing what we will resist – isn’t it all the same and any excuse good enough? – we should be focussing on the tools of our revolution. Now go and pick your weapon of choice.

“Ik heb jazzdrum gestudeerd aan het conservatorium,” vertelt zanger/brulboei/ongeleid projectiel Ramses Van den Eede. “Maar ik was toen ook al bezig met het schrijven van nummers. Soms had ik het gevoel dat ik net door die jazz opgesloten was. En dat ik daardoor niets meer kon. Als je als drummer geen zelfvertrouwen hebt, ben je ook geen goede drummer meer. Sowieso wilde ik niet drummen en zingen tegelijk, ik vind performance ook belangrijk. (Grijnst) Aan een drumstel zit je tenslotte vastgeketend. Vroeger hadden we twee drummers, mijn ex-lief drumde ook. Maar Elias (Devoldere) slaagt er zowaar in om die twee partijen in één te draaien.”

“Sommige mensen denken dat zunk de samentrekking is van funk en Zappa, maar eigenlijk komt dat ‘genre’ van mijn vader (acteur Peter Van den Eede, tz). Zijn vader was dichter, zijn grootvader protestzanger. Als jonge gast had hij zelf een soortement, euh, band. Niks serieus. Mijn papa ramde op de achterkant van een kapotte piano en ze hadden een gitarist die wel wat kon. De muziek noemden ze zunk, wat eigenlijk niets betekent. En dus spelen wij neozunk.” (Lacht)

“Onze sound is soms hard, zeker live, maar ik hou ook van pop. Harry Nilsson bijvoorbeeld. Die kan zo overdrijven in zijn suikerige arrangementen dat hij het clichématige omkeert in iets echts. Zelf doen we niet aan ironie. Mijn vader vindt ironie net geweldig, en houdt daarom zo van Zappa, maar ik word niet zo door zijn technische virtuositeit en grollen geraakt. Hij heeft ongelofelijke dingen gedaan, maar hij ontroert me niet altijd. Nilsson wel, die geloof ik helemaal.”

Cowboy “Mijn ouders hebben me naar Ramses Shaffy vernoemd, maar ze hielden vooral van new wave. Maar muziek heb ik vooral ontdekt via de stiefvader van mijn ex-lief. Hij had een gigantische platencollectie, veel punk en postpunk. Television, Pere Ubu, The Residents... Hij spoorde me aan om muzikant te worden en was mijn klankbord toen ik mijn eerste demo’s maakte. In de Bilbo heeft mijn vriendin ooit Hits van The Birthday Party gekocht, als cadeau voor haar pa. Op de hoes stond hun bassist Tracy Pew uitgedost als cowboy. Die combi vond ik hilarisch fout. Maar uiteindelijk vonden we die songs zo goed dat we de plaat nooit hebben afgegeven.”

Hypopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia “Journalisten vonden onze groepsnaam al niet kunnen, daarom hebben we er voor de titel van ons debuut nog een schepje bovenop gedaan,” lacht Ramses Van den Eede. “Eigenlijk is het een titelloze plaat.” Hun zo “oncatchy groepsnaam dat ie weer catchy wordt” haalde Hypochristmutreefuzz bij de gelijknamige compositie van de Nederlandse hedendaagse componist, jazzpianist en Fluxus-kunstenaar Misha Mengelberg. “Ik heb zijn nummer ontdekt in een versie van Eric Dolphy uit 1964, en het is ook opgenomen in The real book, het standaardwerk voor, euh, jazz standards. Nu, onze band bestaat uit pop- en jazzmuzikanten, maar we maken absoluut geen jazz. Jazz is een Amerikaanse traditie, het is mijn taal niet.” Van den Eedes taal is punk, noise, hiphop en chaos. “Geketende chaos. Vroeger waren we daarin extremer, nu laten we al structuren toe. We willen het hele spectrum, zowel catchy zijn als chaos toelaten. Ik heb ook in een popband gespeeld, en daar heb ik de kracht van een goed nummer leren begrijpen.” In die songs bezingt Van den Eede de beklemming van vandaag en de verlichting van de kindertijd. “Noem het melancholie naar een naïeve periode. Wij zijn een generatie die alles kan bereiken wat ze wil bereiken. Maar we zijn lui en niet gelukkig. We hangen we aan elkaar van de angsten en gaan allemaal naar de psycholoog omdat we de chaos van de wereld niet aankunnen.”

Ten years of the weird and the wonderful

Does Offscreen still need an introduction on the eve of its tenth edition? This festival is the mecca for lovers of B-movies, camp, ground-breaking, or non-conformist cinema, as well as the cult films of the past, present, and future. “The world would be a much more beautiful place if everybody thought The Greasy Strangler was a great film,” the high priests of the festival Dirk Van Extergem and Wim Castermans grin. niels ruëll • photos: ivan put

t’s your birthday, hooray. And you’re a bit of a weirdo, hooray again. If the past nine editions of Offscreen have taught us anything, it is that weird can also be incredibly funny, beautiful, and exciting. The tenth edition of the film festival with the tagline “Join the cult” is a stirring confession of faith in love for the weird and wonderful. On the eve of the festival’s teens, founders Dirk Van Extergem and Wim Castermans sat down with us to discuss where it’s at and where it’s going. Offscreen now occupies a permanent place in Brussels’s cultural calendar. Is the plan

to expand as much again over the next ten years? Dirk Van Extergem: No. We could attract slightly more people by subtitling all the films in French and the festival could perform slightly better. But by and large we know the audience for cult films, and the numbers aren’t about to double suddenly. A cult film festival in Belgium will never attract 30,000 viewers. We always get somewhere between seven and eight thousand. We are pretty much at our plateau, unless we change course and become more general and commercial. But we’re not trying to become Brussels’s

biggest film festival. The challenge is rather to enhance our profile as the central point of reference for cult film. Have you processed the reduction in your structural subsidies? Van Extergem: That was a kick in the stomach. It hobbled our good flow. We have managed to limit the damage, but we are back to fighting for our survival. We shouldn’t have to do that after ten years. It is certainly not because our results are bad. Even the Flanders Audiovisual Fund (VAF) admits that we have great content, “but there is no money.” Sometimes I feel like saying: “Stuff it, we don’t want your

subsidies, we’ll do it all on our own.” But screening old and unusual films is not very lucrative. We don’t have the same energy that we did ten years ago, when we did everything for free because we were crazy and idealistic. You have to be if you want to start something from scratch. After five years, it was crunch time: receive structural financing or shut the whole thing down. The arts decree allocated funds to us and we were encouraged to professionalise. Hiring a full-time employee was a conditio sine qua non. Then the financing for film festivals was transferred to the VAF,

which operates with maximum budgets so all the festivals had to accept cuts. When I resisted, I was told that Offscreen is a hobby. Ouch. Van Extergem: They said that we should look for money elsewhere. But there is no point in a small cult festival applying to big banks because Mister KBC is not queuing up to be associated with Stephen Sayadian. The City of Brussels thought a thousand euro was too much, but they don’t mind running three big concert halls. Culture has been reduced to city marketing. We

are surviving, but we can’t keep going backwards. I am a voluntarist, but things have to stay manageable. You mentioned Stephen Sayadian. He makes avant-garde, post-apocalyptic pornography. Offscreen also championed the sex films of Jess Franco, Radley Metzger, and the Nikkatsu Studios. Sex sells? Wim Castermans: We don’t consciously look for sex. Stephen Sayadian is a genuine auteur, a director with his own voice who also happens to make porn. To the extent that you could even call his super surreal, avant-garde films porn. This year you are also presenting a programme of Indonesian action films. I can’t

That appeals to people’s imaginations. Van Extergem: We present our content in cult packaging, and we’re not too squeamish to show a picture of a bare chest. Where do you find the films? Castermans: You used to have to dig around obscure video rental shops to find VHS copies, but now you can just find what you’re looking for on the internet with the click of a button. Specialised labels survive thanks to niches all around

“Every time it is that wonderful discovery that you are not the only person who loves crazy films” imagine many people know much about that. Does the audience just trust you implicitly? Castermans: On Saturdays especially we get a lot of people who want to go out and trust that Offscreen will have something to excite them. Our retrospectives and thematic programmes demonstrated that we have an eye for special films. That

the world. In fact, the man behind the specialised studio Mondo Macabro is coming to Brussels to introduce the Indonesian action. Van Extergem: Our audiences aren’t only coming to watch an action film with people in crocodile costumes. They value everything else we offer too, like an expert

providing context for the films. And yet I don’t think people come to see films about which they know absolutely nothing. We serve an existing audience. We benefit enormously from the new love of film; the wave of curious film enthusiasts and collectors. Twenty years ago, nobody knew anything about Indonesian action films. You had to go to Indonesia to see them. Nowadays you can watch them on YouTube if you want to. The secret of Offscreen: it’s more fun to watch together than alone. Castermans: Absolutely! Watching a 35mm film on the big screen and sharing it with a full house is a completely different experience to watching it alone at home in front of a computer screen. Van Extergem: Every time it is that wonderful discovery that you are not the only person who loves crazy films. Sharing the experience is typical of all cult phenomena. Like a cult itself, you sit in a dark room and experience something together. This year, The Greasy Strangler is a perfect example of a film that gets better by talking about it after the screening. That was also true of The Room. That kind of cult is rare. Films like that are not a dime a dozen. Castermans: The Greasy Strangler is an insanely wacky, grotesque film, but once you’ve seen it, it never lets you go. If you mention the film to anybody who has ever seen it, they will immediately start singing the songs or reciting the dialogues. Do you use quotas for the number of guilty

pleasures? Castermans: That term is never men-

tioned here. If a film entertains me, why should I feel guilty about it? I understand why people use that term, but I don’t feel any guilt whatsoever. What are the criteria for your new, unreleased films, the so-called Offscreenings? Van Extergem: We screen the cult films of the future. Films that are innovative in their form and/or content. A film that grips, moves, or shocks you. I know, that sounds very vague. Castermans: It is difficult to articulate our approach precisely. A film is Offscreen or not Offscreen. That is not only related to its inherent quality. This year, we are showing Prevenge, which is a slasher. But it is a slasher with a pregnant woman in the lead role. We look for things that are out of the ordinary. Van Extergem: Belgian film distributors now offer us films that we could only have dreamt of ten years ago. They consider us to be a valid festival with an audience that creates added value because it generates word-of-mouth publicity. We must ask just one nostalgic question: of which film screening are you most proud and what was your most memorable encounter? Castermans: Last year we screened a magnificent 35mm copy of Out of the Blue, a little-known but stunning film by Dennis Hopper. The cinema was quite full. Van Extergem: It took a lot of work, but in 2013 we finally managed to bring John Waters to Brussels. He is a cult figure

“Guilty pleasures? I understand why people use that term, but I don’t feel any guilt whatsoever” and a showman who knows how to sell himself, but that’s OK. His show brought 1,800 people to Bozar, and he also came to Nova to introduce a film to 200 people. Castermans: The experience of meeting Umberto Lenzi [a legendary Italian genre director – NR] was less positive. He called me every foul name under the

sun because we accidentally screened the American copy of his film. The whole cinema could hear him screaming and after the tirade, I was drenched in saliva. He had only arrived in Brussels two hours earlier. Van Extergem: He was impossible to talk to unless you addressed him as maestro. Offscreen’s slogan is “Join the cult”. Ten editions ago Dirk called it “unheimlich”. Have you consciously started using the word ‘cult’ more over the years? Van Extergem: Yes. Nobody really knows what “unheimlich” means. Cult is a term that speaks to people. The tagline “Join the cult” works. The festival is not populist, but it’s not elitist either. We want to show cult to as big an audience as possible. The world would be a much more beautiful place if everybody thought The Greasy Strangler was a great film. [Laughs] That is not the case yet, unfortunately, but we’re working on it.

Horror is (sometimes) a far too beautiful and adventurous genre to leave it up to the guys. After The Babadook by Jennifer Kent, French director Julia Ducournau is now also making international waves. In Grave, the film that opens the Offscreen festival, a highly gifted sixteen-year-old girl is forced to eat meat for the first time in her life during a grotesque initiation ritual at a veterinary school. The bloody consequences are a total nightmare, but also an exploration of femininity, sisterhood, and sexuality. Bon appetit.

Toys in the attic 18/3, 17.00, Cinematek

Did you enjoy wonderful times playing in an attic full of old forgotten junk when you were a child? If so, remember to take a box of tissues with you to this stop-motion film by Czech director Jiří Barta. It’s not for your eyes, but because you are likely to salivate uncontrollably. In this artisanal, nostalgic lo-fi film, a kindly doll mothers a teddy bear, a little plasticine man with a pencil-stump nose, and a marionette musketeer. But a cruel dictator comes and ruins their idyllic life. No need to tidy up afterwards, it’s only a film.

The Cremator 10/3, 19.00, Cinematek

God may be dead, but goth certainly isn’t. If you’re looking for expressive gothic cinema, Offscreen recommends The Cremator. In this jet-black comedy made in 1968 – a tumultuous year – Slovakian director Juraj Herz tackles fascism. Two rich but ageing aunts turn rabid and devour the guests at a family party. Bad taste of the kind that people from across the world will enjoy.

Porn that is so psychedelic, intellectual, artistic, and surreal that porn lovers come flocking. That is the reputation of this 1982 avant-garde cult film. Director Stephen Sayadian used to work for the famous porn magazine Hustler and he paved the way for Alt Porn. He is coming to Brussels to introduce this dystopian story about a world in which almost everyone becomes terminally sick from having sex.

The Devil’s Sword 24/3, 23.30, Cinema Nova

We have no idea what kind of grass was being smoked during the making of The Devil’s Sword but it must have been pretty good stuff. A nymphomaniac underwater queen sends an army of crocodile men, warriors, and wizards to fight a hero with a devil’s sword. The trailer alone will show you that the realisation of this 1984 Indonesian pulp film is much crazier than the plot might sound. But only on a big cinema screen will you be able to enjoy the gawky crocodile costumes, the 1,001 decapitations, and the psychedelia in all their hilarious glory.

Lucifer Rising 17/3, 23.30, Cinema Nova

The Summer of Love did not last long. In 1969, the flower children exchanged their dreams of free love for bad and psychotic trips. Offscreen is dedicating a section of the festival to the horrors and madness of 1969 with biker films such as Werewolves on Wheels (see cover), stories about the murderous cult leader Charles Manson, and an actual black mass. The Apocalypse 69 Night will climax with Lucifer Rising, a psychedelic tribute to paganism by Kenneth Anger, the anti-pope of experimental cinema. Amen.

Horror is (sometimes) a far too beautiful and adventurous genre to leave it up to the guys. Take two. British director Alice Lowe (Sightseers) was heavily pregnant when she took the role in her own film of a heavily pregnant woman whose unborn baby incites her to murder. The Guardian called it “A nightmarish twist on post- and prenatal depression,” while Empire wrote that it was “a psychological study of the alienating effect of pregnancy.”

We’d better not even start on the improper use of cucumbers in this erotic four-part film about virginity, female masturbation, blood lust, and incest. Your mind would go in the right direction, but you would draw the wrong conclusions. This is one of the smutty films with which the Polish erotomaniac Walerian Borowczyk elevated erotic film to a higher level by focusing on aesthetic refinement, stunning visuals, and curiosities.

If the characters spoke English instead of Korean, the media wouldn’t be able to stop talking about The Wailing, and people would be falling over themselves to buy tickets. This countryside thriller is simply that incredible, exciting, and continuously surprising, and it gets darker and more intense by the minute. In every respect, director Na Hong-jin (The Chaser was just as brilliant) is as good as his more famous countrymen Park Chanwook and Bong Joon-ho. Among other things, there is an exorcism in this film that will make your hair stand on end for at least 666 months.

Nous profitons de son retour dans la capitale pour interroger Céline Delbecq et Thierry Hellin sur les résonances concrètes de ce succès théâtral. sophie soukias • PHoto : Ivan Put

ous avons donné rendez-vous à l’auteure et metteuse en scène Céline Delbecq (Cie de la Bête Noire) et à l’acteur Thierry Hellin dans un café de la Place du Jeu de Balle dans les Marolles, là où le monologue de L’Enfant Sauvage débute. Alors qu’il est en route pour manger un stoemp avec ses collègues, un homme ordinaire croise le destin d’une enfant sauvage. Refusant de l’abandonner à son sort, il se met en tête de devenir son père d’accueil. Commence pour cet homme un réel parcours du combattant, judiciaire et administratif, qui l’entraîne dans les réalités dures et complexes des enfants placés par le juge. Retour sur ce spectacle « solidaire et collectif » qui a conquis la critique et qui continue de faire le tour de la Belgique. Comment le projet est-il né? Céline Delbecq : J’ai fait beaucoup de bénévolat dans des institutions d’enfants et d’adolescents placés par le juge. L’écriture de L’Enfant sauvage m’a remuée car ces jeunes que je connais ne quittaient pas mon esprit. Au début, il était question d’une enfant sauvage et puis le protagoniste est devenu un parent d’accueil parce que si je donnais la parole à une petite fille, elle allait parler de ses parents, parce

qu’elle est la conséquence de leur histoire. Moi, je voulais qu’on parle d’elle. J’ai choisi un père et non une mère d’accueil parce que tout le monde attend d’une femme de recueillir un enfant abandonné. Il fallait que ce soit un homme. Le fait que le protagoniste soit un parent d’accueil facilite l’identification du public ? Delbecq : Tout à fait. Chaque spectacle est suivi d’une rencontre avec des associations de parrainage et les questions sont généralement très concrètes. Les gens demandent s’il faut une chambre supplémentaire pour accueillir un enfant. Les retombées ont été très positives. Thierry Hellin : Ce qui facilite aussi l’identification c’est qu’il s’agit d’un homme ordinaire, un célibataire qui vit seul. Il n’incarne pas la famille type avec un père et une mère. Les gens comprennent qu’il n’y a pas de règle, qu’un homme seul ou un couple homosexuel sont aussi des potentiels parents d’accueil. Thierry Hellin, comment on fait pour se mettre dans la peau d’un père d’accueil ? Hellin : Céline m’a beaucoup parlé. Et je me suis référé à mon rapport intime à l’engagement et à la paternité. Quand j’ai lu le texte pour la première fois, j’étais en pleurs face à cet homme qui se lance, qui

théâtre petite fille cherche famille d’accueil n’a pas peur d’y aller. J’ai pris mon téléphone et j’ai dit à Céline: je veux le faire ! Le théâtre est capable de faire bouger les choses, de changer le monde en un sens ? Delbecq : Si je n’avais pas cet espoir, je n’écrirais pas. Je veux que le spectacle puisse, peut-être pas changer les choses, mais au moins déplacer le regard sur quelque chose qu’on ne voit pas parce que c’est un peu complexe, parce qu’on n’a pas envie de le savoir. Hellin : Le théâtre doit pouvoir provoquer quelque chose. On s’est démené pour que ce spectacle ait la plus grande diffusion possible. On a contacté une somme incalculable de personnes afin de multiplier les partenariats culturels et sociaux. La vision qui est dépeinte du home dans L’Enfant Sauvage n’est pas très rose. Delbecq : ça a été une grosse bataille. Ce qu’il y a, c’est qu’il m’était impossible de parler du home autrement parce qu’il était évident que le père d’accueil ne pouvait pas porter cette institution dans son coeur car elle le coupait de son lien avec l’enfant. Je comprends que pour les éducateurs ça a été dur parce qu’ils font un métier de passion, mais la pièce ne se veut pas une description réaliste du home, seulement un point de vue. Hellin : Dans un premier temps, le ministère de l’aide à la jeunesse, vers qui on s’était tournés pour obtenir des subsides, s’était enthousiasmé pour la thématique mais en voyant le spectacle ils sont allés jusqu’à décourager les gens de venir nous voir. Le ministère, qui voulait quelque chose de didactique et de pédagogique, estimait que notre spectacle donnait une vision misérabiliste, complexe et très dure de la réalité des enfants placés. Ils ont pris ça pour une attaque, or c’était une main tendue pour travailler ensemble. Qu’est-ce qui vous gêne dans le théâtre didactique ? Hellin : C’est qu’on vous présente une succession de faits auxquels on donne des solutions très pratiques. On vous indique comment penser. Le texte de Céline n’est pas du tout écrit comme ça. C’est du théâtre, ce n’est pas une histoire vraie mais plutôt une vraie histoire. Delbecq : Ce qui compte pour moi c’est d’arriver à toucher le spectateur. S’il est touché, il va se poser des questions. À partir du moment où on lui donne des réponses, il arrête de réfléchir. L’enfant sauvage

et op, die bizon kan rook spuwen door zijn neusgaten.” We zitten oog in oog met de gigantische opgezette kop van de prairiereus die over de toog van café Bizon waakt , gitarist Mathias Declerq wijst ons fijntjes op de geheimen van de kroeg die zo geliefd is bij concertgangers van de AB. Hij kan het weten, voor hij journalist werd bij BRUZZ, tapte hij er wekelijks pintjes. Terwijl Jimi Hendrix purperen mist door de boxen spuit, komt ook zanger Lenny Crabbe binnengewaaid, met zijn vertrouwde deukhoed, sluike haren en halflange ruitjesjas nog steeds een bohemien. “Dit was begin jaren 1980 een van de eerste cafés tussen de cabardouchkes, toen het hier nog een gevaarlijke buurt was,” zegt hij over het oude hart van Brussel. Declerq en Crabbe komen beiden uit Ternat, ze kennen elkaar al van toen ze nog samen in de zandbak van de plaatselijke speeltuin pateekes bakten. Crabbe

woont er nog steeds, in het huis van zijn vader Luc Crabbe, die in de jaren 1990 met zijn rockband Betty Goes Green in de slipstream van de grunge wat deining veroorzaakte en zelfs in de gunst viel van Lou Reed. “Mijn pa heeft er zijn studio gebouwd, hij werkt nu vooral als sound engineer. Een handige plek die al sinds 2004 onze uitvalsbasis is.” Toen waren Lenny en co dertien, twee jaar later leidden ze een tijdperk in van jonge rockers in de Rock Rally. Elf jaar verder is hun age niet zo freaky meer en staan er vier albums op de teller. Inner stranger komt een dikke vier jaar na de vorige plaat. Dat is een hele poos. Lenny Crabbe: Ja, en toch hebben we niet stilgezeten. Wij hebben altijd veel getoerd, speelden tot 120 optredens per jaar. Maar de voet moest eens van het gaspedaal. Iedereen is gaan reizen, Matti heeft Nicaragua bezocht, het land waar hij geboren is. En ik ben tien maanden in Berlijn gaan wonen. Af en toe moet

ik van horizon veranderen, dat geeft mij zuurstof. Ik ben er terechtgekomen in Neukölln, net onder Kreuzberg. Een rustige, multiculturele buurt met heel veel parken. Die oasen heb ik nodig, heb ik gemerkt. Ik heb ook anderhalf jaar in East-London gewoond, maar daar draaide de molen te hard door, mijn energie bleek toch niet onuitputtelijk. (Grijnst) Berlijn is een grootstad, maar je hebt er ademruimte. Ken je Berlin-Tempelhof ? Dat is een oude luchthaven die omgevormd is tot een gigantisch park. Mathias Declerq: Je kan er gewoon rolschaatsen op het tarmac. (Lacht) Berlijn is de stad die Brussel had kunnen zijn, als ze meer hadden geïnvesteerd in pleinen en open ruimten.

“Iedereen wil wel eens wakker worden in een ander leven” Crabbe: Net toen wij er waren, bleek de

overheid andere plannen te hebben met het park. Daar is toen zo hard tegen geprotesteerd, dat ze die hebben afgevoerd. Ik vond dat heel symbolisch: the power isn’t there, the power is here! Ben je daar die inner stranger tegen het lijf gelopen? Crabbe: Berlijn was een tijdlang mijn safe zone. Ik heb er ontzettend veel gelezen en véél geschreven. Vroeger plakte ik snel wat oneliners of losse gedachten tegen de koelkast, nu zijn mijn schrijfsels veel meer doorwrocht. De kiem voor een soloplaat is er ook gelegd. Voor mij was het een verse start, maar ik ben er wel mezelf tegengekomen. Je hebt een beeld van jezelf, en je gelooft daar ook in. En dan stuurt een gedachte of iets dat in je omgeving gebeurt, je weer in een heel andere richting. Je

wordt een vreemde binnen een wereld die daarvoor erg vertrouwd was. Declerq: Die vervreemding is niet alleen iets dat ons persoonlijk treft, je voelt ze vandaag overal. Zekerheden die al die tijd logisch leken, zijn onderuitgehaald. In ‘Someone else’ zing je over het verlangen om iemand anders te zijn. Crabbe: Iedereen wil weleens wakker worden in een ander leven. Maar dan besef je dat elk huisje zijn kruisje heeft. (From the heart of) Glitter Lake, jullie vorige album, was jullie ‘Elbow-plaat’, met zoete strijkers en rijke arrangementen. Op Inner stranger mogen de gitaren weer briesen. Declerq: Die plaat was fijn om te maken, Reinard Vanbergen (van Das Pop) had voor een mooie verbreding van ons klankpalet gezorgd. Live vingen we dat op met een extra muzikant, maar nu wilden we terug naar het begin: four guys in a room, twee gitaren, bas en drum. Voor ons werkt dat uiteindelijk het best. Met een stevige ninetiesvibe. ‘Hell of a ride’ doet aan Oasis denken, ‘Tomorrow’s Monday’ aan Nirvana. Crabbe: Wij zijn geboren in het jaar van Nevermind, dat schept een band. (Lacht) Kurt Cobain zou vorige week vijftig zijn geworden, hij is zo oud als mijn pa. Declerq: Die plaat klinkt echt uniek. Van Nirvana ken ik trouwens nog steeds alles vanbuiten. Maar als het op songs schrijven aankomt, zijn The Beatles en The Who toch belangrijker. Crabbe: Als kids organiseerden we filmavonden. Vier veldbedjes naast elkaar, chips, cola en Ken Russells verfilming van Tommy in de beamer. (Lacht) Staan jullie vandaag waar jullie als veertien jarige Rock Rally-finalisten van droomden? Crabbe: Ja. Af en toe heb ik wel moeten doorbijten, maar dat heeft geloond. Kijk naar hoeveel bands er uit elkaar zijn gespat. Jimmy quit, Jody got married, maar wij staan er nog steeds, en bovendien zitten we met z’n vieren op dezelfde golflengte. Mooi, toch?

our sa 9e édition, le festival Hors Pistes déboule aux Halles avec ce qui se pratique de mieux dans le nouveau cirque. 8 compagnies, 10 spectacles, tout le monde y trouvera son compte entre les jongleurs hallucinés de Defracto, les acrobaties surréalistes et oniriques des Menteuses, la danse acrobatique de Piergiorgio Milano et le cabaret burlesque de Cridacompany. En ouverture, Carré Curieux avec leur premier spectacle, créé il y a dix ans, et un autre où ils invitent quelques amis à faire un peu de cirque ensemble. Anne Kumps, la programmatrice, nous en dit plus. Quelle est la ligne rouge dans la programmation de cette édition du festival Hors Pistes ? Anne Kumps : Sur les 8 compagnies, 5 sont basées à Bruxelles. Les trois autres ont un lien avec la ville par l’un de leurs membres. Marie Jolet de la compagnie Cheptel Aleikoum vivait à Saint-Josse à 500 mètres des Halles. Comme elle est la fille d’un des fondateurs de la compagnie jeune public La Casquette, on peut dire qu’elle a usé ses fonds de culotte sur les gradins des Halles. L’ancrage bruxellois de la programmation est-il lié à la présence de l’ESAC ? Kumps : Il y a certainement un effet ESAC. Pendant longtemps, les jeunes qui venaient d’un peu partout pour suivre les formations

repartaient dans leur pays une fois diplômés. Maintenant, c’est beaucoup moins systématique. Bruxelles exerce un réel attrait pour les circassiens. Y a-t-il un style ou un cachet ESAC qu’on peut retrouver dans ces différentes compagnies ? Kumps : C’est très diversifié. À l’ESAC, ils ont refusé une ligne trop marquée. Beaucoup de jeunes artistes cherchent avant tout à développer un numéro qu’ils pourront montrer chez eux pour se faire connaître. À Berlin, par exemple, il y a pas mal de cabarets où les jeunes sortis d’une école peuvent montrer leurs numéros. D’autres artistes cherchent à développer un spectacle complet plus long. À l’ESAC, les étudiants ont la liberté de faire évoluer leur pratique comme ils le sentent. Il y a des fortes différences entre Carré Curieux qui intègre les techniques de cirque traditionnelles pour les emmener ailleurs, Cheptel Aleikoum où Marie Jolet s’interroge sur comment l’âge transforme son approche de l’aérien et Petri Dish où on est beaucoup plus proche de la danse. En neuf ans de festival, avez-vous senti une évolution dans le cirque ? Kumps : Les formes sont sans doute plus abstraites aujourd’hui et on a beaucoup plus de choix. J’ai l’impression que le marché est plus difficile même si on parle beaucoup plus de cirque contemporain. Personnellement, j’ai envie de montrer des spectacles où il y a de la poésie et où les artistes montrent leurs tripes. Ce qui m’intéresse, ce n’est pas la technique en soi mais comment elle emmène le spectateur ailleurs, au-delà d’un coup d’éclat de quelques minutes.

FR | Si Gustav Mesmer n’avait pas connu l’enfermement psychiatrique, se serait-il

mis à inventer des machines volantes ? Focus sur un artiste outsider à l’imagination débordante dont l’œuvre résonne comme un appel à la liberté. sophie soukias

nfermé depuis l’âge de 26 ans (1929) dans un hôpital psychiatrique sur base d’un diagnostic expéditif et douteux - « schizophrénie à progression lente », il ne restait à Gustav Mesmer qu’une seule liberté : celle de rêver. Alors il se mit à rêver qu’il pouvait voler. Glanant ça et là le peu de matériel que pouvait lui offrir l’hôpital psychiatrique de Bad Schussenried (sud de l’Allemagne) : dos de feuilles usagées, bouts de crayons, Gustav Mesmer se mit à dessiner avec obsession les plans de machines volantes ingénieuses actionnées par la force musculaire: vélos à ailes multiples, harnais avec une hélice, etc. Une façon comme une autre de se réfugier dans l’imagination pour ne pas sombrer. On sait que Gustav Mesmer vivait très mal son internement. En témoignent les centaines de lettres écrites à ses parents les suppliant de venir le chercher. En vain. Un vieil adage ne veut-il pas que c’est quand on n’y croit plus que la vie vous tend les bras ? Le transfert en 1964 de Mesmer, alors âgé de 61 ans, dans un hospice pour personnes âgées atteintes de maladies mentales à Buttenhausen va changer le cours de son existence. Considéré toute sa vie comme un inadapté, il est enfin pris au sérieux et valorisé pour son savoir-faire. On lui confie un atelier où il peut mettre à exécution ses plans d’engins volants. Ravivée par l’air de la liberté, son imagination explose, déborde. Mesmer invente, construit, dessine, colorie. Il prend aussi des photos de ses inventions et de la vie dans l’hospice. Petit à petit, c’est une œuvre artistique riche et cohérente qui voit le jour et qui ne va pas tarder à attirer l’attention du monde extérieur.

Stephan Hartmaier, qui s’est lié d’amitié avec l’homme qui dévalait les chemins de campagne de son enfance à bord d’un vélovolant fabriqué à partir de matériaux de récupération, lui dédie une première exposition au début des années 1980, Mesmer a presque 80 ans. D’autres suivent: Vienne, Mannheim, Lausanne, ... La télévision lui consacre même un reportage. À l’écran, on observe un homme radieux, tout simplement heureux de faire connaître ses inventions. La consécration artistique vient en 1992 lorsqu’un de ses vélos-volants est présenté à l’Exposition Universelle de Séville dans le pavillon allemand. Aujourd’hui, Gustav Mesmer est considéré et exposé comme un artiste emblématique de l’art outsider - l’art créé de manière spontanée par des autodidactes opérant en marge de la société, ce qui leur garantit une certaine authenticité. Son œuvre est visible jusqu’au 11 juin au Musée Arts et Marge, rue Haute. Sitôt le seuil franchi, vous plongez dans le monde onirique et intemporel d’un savant fou (pas dans le sens pathologique du terme!) dont les engins volants - souvent comparés à ceux de l’artiste belge Panamarenko - vous ramènent au temps où vous aussi vous nourrissiez le rêve, pas si fou, de voler. Et pour ceux dont les lèvres brûlent de demander si les avions de Mesmer ont vraiment décollé. Nous répondrons simplement: Non, mais quelle importance, au fond ?

at drijft de restaurants waar we graag nog eens over de vloer komen? Zonder enige twijfel: goede ideeën. En daar loopt Entre Nous van over. Sara, de jonge Italiaanse achter deze plek, verzeilde in Brussel via het uitwisselingsprogramma Leonardo, en liet zich onderweg verleiden door die andere passie van haar: voeding. Voor Sara is het onmogelijk om een project te verbeelden dat niet zou steunen op de waarden duurzaamheid en gezelligheid. Met de steun van KissKissBankBank nam de Napolitaanse zich dan ook voor om het hart van een ietwat grijze wijk, die aan het Zuidstation, op te vrolijken met lokaal talent en veel warmte. Dat klinkt op papier wonderwel, maar wat betekent het in de praktijk? Wel, Entre Nous maakt zijn ambities helemaal waar. De ruimte toont zich als een door grote ramen geflankeerde rechthoek, waarin een table d’hôte, een kruidige plantenmuur, een rek gevuld met uitstekende producten en een eiland in blank hout voor opvallende accenten zorgen. Een toonbank achter geperforeerd metaal scheidt de keuken af. Het eetbare

hart van Entre Nous wordt uitgemaakt door ingrediënten van lokale producenten: groenten van Vert d’Iris in Anderlecht, vis van bij Pintafish in Leuven en vlees van bioboerderij La ferme de l’Escafène in Ragnies. Dat alles werd vertaald in ciabatta’s (€5), een hoofdgerecht (€15), soep (€5), pasta’s (€12) en een groentebuffet (€11). Dat laatste voorzag in een geslaagde mix van quinoa met peterselie en ‘shieteke’-champignons – vernoemd naar de Brusselse kwekerij –, paarse wortelen en gebakken knolselderij, een stuk pizza met butternut, omelet met spinazie, en witloof met paneermeel. En dan hebben we het niet eens gehad over de pasta alla sorrentina op basis van Ardense mozzarella en tomatensaus. Verrukkelijk!

CONCERTS FR | Quel est le carburant des restaurants où l’on a envie de

revenir ? Sans hésiter : les bonnes idées. Dans le genre, Entre Nous en est farci. On doit cette enseigne à Sara, une jeune Italienne débarquée à Bruxelles. Impossible pour cette passionnée d’imaginer un projet en dehors des valeurs de durabilité et de convivialité qui la travaillent. Grâce au soutien de Kiss Kiss Bank Bank, cette Napolitaine s’est donc mis en tête de diffuser du local et du convivial en plein cœur d’un quartier « gris », celui de la Gare du Midi. Si sur papier, on signe des deux mains, qu’en est-il de la pratique ? Entre Nous est à la hauteur de ses ambitions. Flanqué de grandes baies vitrées, le lieu se découvre comme un rectangle ponctué par une jolie table d’hôtes, un mur dédié aux plantes aromatiques, une étagère chargée de bons produits et un îlot central de bois clair. Un comptoir métallique abritant la cuisine complète le lieu. Le cœur d’Entre Nous est assuré par des aliments achetés auprès de fournisseurs de proximité : légumes de chez Vert d’Iris (Anderlecht), poissons de chez Pintafish (Leuven) ou viande de la Ferme de L’Escafène (Ragnies). Tout cela est décliné en de délicieuses ciabatta (5 euros), un plat du jour (15 euros), une soupe (5 euros), des pâtes (12 euros) et un buffet de légumes (11 euros). C’est ce dernier que l’on a testé. Il était redoutable entre quinoa au persil et champignons « shieteke », du nom de ce projet de champignonnière bruxelloise; carottes mauves et céleri-rave rôtis ; part de pizza au butternut ; portion d’omelette aux épinards ; ainsi que chicons parsemés de chapelure. Et on ne vous parle même pas des pasta alla sorrentina à base de mozzarella des Ardennes et de sauce tomate. Redoutable !

EN | What is the key component of a restaurant that makes you want to come back? Without a second thought, it’s good ideas. Entre Nous is packed full of them. We owe this establishment to the young Italian Sara, who came to Brussels thanks to the exchange programme Leonardo, and along the way found herself drawn towards her other passion: food. With the support of KissKissBankBank, the Neapolitan, in keeping with her focus on sustainability and conviviality, set about providing local and convivial dining right in the heart of the “grey” neighbourhood surrounding the Gare du Midi. On paper, we’re all for it, but what is it like in practice? Well, Entre Nous lives up to its ambitions. With large bay windows, the space is rectangular and furnished with a pretty, long shared table, a wall covered in aromatic plants, a shelving unit filled with good-quality products, and a central island in pale wood. The perforated metal counter around the kitchen makes the place complete. The beating heart of Entre Nous is the produce bought from local suppliers: vegetables from Vert d’Iris (Anderlecht), fish from Pintafish (Leuven), and meat from La ferme de l’Escafène (Ragnies). All this is transformed into delicious ciabatta (€5), the daily special (€15), soup (€5), pasta (€12), and a vegetable buffet (€11). The latter was wonderful, from the quinoa with parsley and “shieteke” mushrooms, named after the Brussels mushroom project, to the roasted purple carrots and celeriac, a slice of pizza with butternut squash, a portion of spinach omelette, and Belgian endive coated in breadcrumbs. And don’t get us started on the pasta alla sorrentina made with mozzarella from the Ardennes and tomato sauce. Fantastic!

FR | Le saxophoniste Toine Thys est plus actif que

jamais. Ce qui profite à son trio qui connaît un nouvel élan. Arno Krijger, le virtuose du clavier Hammond, fait toujours partie du groupe. Quant au batteur, il a été remplacé par Niek de Bruijn. Le nouveau venu n’est autre que le guitariste sénégalais Hervé Samb, déjà connu dans nos contrées puisqu’il a réalisé un disque avec Pierre Van Dormael et collaboré avec, entre autres, Nicolas Kummert et David Linx. D’après Thys, Samb est l’homme de la situation. « Ensemble, nous parvenons à enrichir la mélodie et parallèlement, ses origines africaines lui donnent un style très énergique. Vu mon faible pour les rythmes africains qui se manifeste à travers d’autres collaborations, comme celle avec Les Ventistes du Faso, Samb était un choix idéal. Cela ne veut pas dire pour autant que soudainement on s’est mis à jouer du pur afrobeat. Ça reste du jazz, mais on utilise des rythmes et des grooves bien précis pour rentre le tout plus exubérant et plus festif. On retrouve déjà cet esprit sur le cd Grizzly mais ici le concept est élargi ». (GTB)

EN | While the KVS staged the entire Odyssey last month, the Kaaitheater is now presenting the complete works of William Shakespeare! The very idea sounds insane, but Tim Etchells’s Forced Entertainment, which like every British theatre company feels the pressure to voice a perspective on the Bard’s work, wouldn’t go for anything less. To celebrate the fourth centenary of the death of “the bloke” – as Etchells calls him – Forced Entertainment decided just to perform all 36 plays. Six actors each retell six plays that they have boiled down to their central plotlines (and a duration of only 36 minutes each). They sit at a table and use household objects to bring the intrigue to life. But despite the abridging, the whole undertaking, from The Merchant of Venice to The Tempest, will still take four weeknights and a weekend. Are you curious to see whether Hamlet is represented by a teapot or a set of kitchen scales? The longer you watch, the cheaper the tickets get, of course. (MB)

NL | Het Brusselse theatergezelschap Tristero heeft weer

een opmerkelijke theatertekst bovengespit. Daarvoor moesten ze dit keer graven tot aan de andere kant van de wereld, maar ze kregen wel hulp van Transquinquennal. Het bevriende Franstalig-Brusselse gezelschap ensceneerde in 2012 immers al dit stuk van de hedendaagse Argentijnse auteur Rafael Spregelburd. De Proost, Youri Dirkx, Peter Vandenbempt, Iris Van Cauwenbergh en Dirk Van Dijck spelen samen vierentwintig personages die in een motel in Las Vegas in sneltempo prakkiseren over geld, liefde en betekenis. Eva Yerbabuena FR | Ces dernières années, Bozar s’est montré

de plus en plus ouvert à recevoir les différentes cultures du monde à Bruxelles, que ce soit l’Afrique lors de l’Afropolitan festival, l’Europe de l’Est lors de Balkan Trafik ou le monde arabe avec Moussem. Le flamenco ne pouvait pas manquer avec la grande communauté espagnole qui vit à Bruxelles depuis les années 1960 ! Du 2 au 4 mars, Bozar prend les couleurs et les saveurs de l’Andalousie. Place aux stars espagnoles et au talent local, car Bruxelles a sa propre scène flamenco avec son académie de danse, ses cantaores (chanteurs) et tocaores (guitaristes). L’attraction principale sera le nouveau spectacle de danse de la flamboyante Eva Yerbabuena, grand nom du flamenco contemporain. On pourra découvrir la maîtrise de Gerardo Nuñez, l’un des plus grands tocaores de notre époque, et le talent local du jeune cantaor belgo-espagnol Esteban Murillo. Dans la « taberna flamenca », Bozar tentera de recréer l’ambiance des tavernes andalouses où se rencontrent musique, danse et gastronomie. Plus surprenant encore, on aura l’occasion de découvrir un aspect peu connu du flamenco : sa dimension spirituelle avec les saetas ou hymnes chrétiens chantés durant la Semaine sainte en Andalousie. Pas de castagnettes mais de quoi faire frémir les vrais amateurs de flamenco ! (BT)

Le film qui met le FN en colère FR | César pensait-il aux réalisateurs en déclarant que les Belges sont les plus courageux de toute la Gaule ? Avec Chez Nous, le Belge Lucas Belvaux ose ce que ses collègues français n’osent pas : démasquer l’extrême droite fréquentable. Niels Ruëll

vant même d’avoir visionné Chez Nous, le Front National manifestait sa colère contre le nouveau film de Lucas Belvaux, l’accusant de propagande anti-FN façonnée par les émules de Goebbels et payée par le contribuable. Il n’est pas très difficile de devenir le champion de la caricature lorsqu’on n’entend rien aux nuances, à l’objectivité et à l’honnêteté. Que le parti d’extrême droite de la candidate à la présidentielle Marine Le Pen se soit reconnu dans celui inventé par Belvaux, démontre bien le positionnement implicite de Chez Nous. Le RNP – pendant fictif du FN – feint de rompre avec les figures et les idées extrêmes du passé dans l’espoir d’arriver, enfin, au pouvoir. Chez Nous n’est pas une attaque frontale au leader du RNP, un sosie de Marine Le Pen. La protagoniste est une recrue du parti : une sympathique infirmière à domicile (la chaleureuse Émilie Dequenne) au dynamisme admirable. Elle se laisse convaincre par un médecin qui

confond patriotisme et fascisme, de briguer la mairie d’une petite ville du nord de la France dévastée par la crise. Dans toute sa naïveté, elle s’effarouche d’un entraîneur de football au passé secret et suffisamment inquiétant pour que le RNP refuse d’être associé à sa personne. Pas de doute sur la pertinence de cette plongée dans les coulisses de l’extrême droite. Mais cela ne fait pas pour autant de Chez Nous un chef-d’œuvre cinématographique. Belvaux maîtrise son sujet mais reste un homme d’idées. Il met les projecteurs sur des questions de société extrêmement intéressantes mais ne parvient pas à cacher les ficelles du scénario ni à faire monter le suspens à son sommet. Contrairement à Marine le Pen Chez Nous appelle surtout à la réflexion.

nous kan niet worden getwijfeld. Maar dat maakt er nog geen grote of prangende film van. Lucas Belvaux zal altijd meer een man van ideeën zijn dan een uitzonderlijke regisseur. Ook in deze film, een blik achter de coulissen van de fictieve extreemrechtse partij RNP, kaart hij interessante maatschappelijke kwesties aan, maar hij slaagt er niet in om de draadjes van het scenario te verbergen of de spanning ten top te drijven. In tegenstelling tot Le Pen appelleert Chez nous vooral aan het verstand. EN | There is no doubt that Chez nous is relevant, but that doesn’t make it a great or incisive film. Lucas Belvaux will always be more of a man of ideas than an exceptional director. In this film, a glimpse behind the scenes of the fictitious far-right party RNP, he again raises interesting social issues, but he has not managed to hide the threads that bind the script together or create as much tension as he could have. In contrast to Le Pen, Chez nous appeals primarily to the intellect.

De ene is een fotograferende punkster met een lichaam dat haar in de steek laat, de andere een rebelse vriendin die zijn verliefdheid negeert. Jamies coming of age is de rode draad, maar het zijn de twintigste-eeuwse vrouwen – Annette Bening, Greta Gerwig en Elle Fanning – die de show mogen stelen. Toch zijn we minder enthousiast dan de Amerikaanse filmrecensenten. Regisseur Mike Mills eist te veel plaats op voor zichzelf. Niet de autobiografische elementen storen, maar de vermoeiende voice-over, het versnellen van beelden, de nostalgiefilter, de zwart-witfootage en andere trucjes op de grens tussen kunstzinnig en gekunsteld. Door te overdonderen, gunt deze film over levenswijsheid de kijker weinig tijd om zelf na te denken.

Edingburgh eind jaren 1980, raakte een gevoelige snaar bij een hele generatie. En werd cult, net als de scabreuze roman van Irvine Welsh waarop de film was gebaseerd. Welsh schreef een vervolg, Porno, maar daar heeft deze vermakelijke sequel nauwelijks iets mee te maken, ook al worden dezelfde personages – grijzer maar niet wijzer – twintig jaar later herenigd. Renton en Sick Boy willen via projectsubsidies een miezerige pub tot sauna ombouwen, junkie Spud heeft literaire ambities en de psychotische Begbie is vooral uit op wraak. De visuele drive van Danny Boyle is nog altijd even ongeremd en het dynamische script behoedt hem ervoor dat de personages te veel toerist worden in hun eigen verloren jeugd. Even scherp of markant als zijn voorganger is T2 niet, maar het is tenminste een integere opvolger – met muziek van Young Fathers en Fat White Family – in plaats van luie nostalgie.

Si le passage à l’âge adulte de Jamie sert de fil rouge, ce sont les trois femmes du 20e siècle – Annette Bening, Greta Gerwig en Elle Fanning – qui crèvent l’écran. Mais nous ne sommes pas aussi emballé que la critique américaine. Le réalisateur Mike Mills prend trop de place. Ce n’est pas tant les éléments autobiographiques qui nous gênent mais plutôt la voix off, les accélérés, le filtre nostalgique, le noir et blanc et autres astuces situées sur la fine frontière entre l’artistique et l’artificiel. En cherchant à tout prix à nous époustoufler, ce film sur la sagesse laisse finalement peu de place à la réflexion.

Le rythme visuel de Danny Boyle n’a pas perdu sa frénésie et le scénario dynamique évite aux personnages d’être les touristes de leur propre jeunesse perdue. Si T2 n’est pas aussi marquant que son prédécesseur, il a le mérite de ne pas verser dans la nostalgie facile, ce qui en fait un successeur digne de ce nom. Notons la musique de Young Fathers et de Fat White Family.

T2 is neither as sharp in its social commentary nor as groundbreaking as its predecessor, but at least this sequel has integrity – with music by Young Fathers and Fat White Family – rather than lazy nostalgia. Robert Mitchum NL | “Stay away from Robert Mitchum,” zingt yéyé-zangers April March in haar gelijknamige ironische liefdesliedje. Cinematek slaat dat advies in de wind. Gelukkig maar, want Mitchums bad attitude maakte van hem een exponent van de Hollywood-cool. Robert Mitchums succes als acteur was voor een groot stuk te danken aan het aura dat hij uitstraalde: de zelfverzekerde, sexy man die nergens een zier om geeft. Maar de rebel mocht dan wel de spot drijven met zijn sterrenstatus, regelmatig dronken op de set staan en laconiek met slaperige ogen in de camera kijken, achter die onbekommerde attitude ging wel degelijk een harde werkethiek schuil. “Je doet alsof niets je wat kan schelen,” zei Howard Hawks na El Dorado tegen hem, “maar je bent een van de hardst werkende mensen die ik ooit heb gekend.” Waarop Mitchum: “Vertel het niet voort.” Robert Mitchum heeft in een pak westerns en thrillers meegespeeld – zoals The sundowners, Pursued en Cape fear –, maar het is de film noir die hem groot heeft gemaakt. Twee hoogtepunten uit het genre zijn een must voor wie wil weten waarom Mitchum een ster was van een heel nieuw soort: Jacques Tourneurs Out of the past, met Mitchum als flegmatieke detective die geobsedeerd raakt door femme fatale Jane Greer, en Charles Laughtons magische The night of the hunter, waarin hij een psychotische priester speelt die “love” en “hate” op zijn knokkels heeft getatoeëerd. Andere toppers uit de cyclus van Cinematek zijn The story of G.I. Joe (zijn doorbraakrol), Angel face, Crossfire, The last tycoon, Farewell, my lovely (Mitchum als Philip Marlowe) en The Yakuza. Ook bijzonder is Thunder road, een stevige B-film over een dranksmokkelaar die Mitchum zelf produceerde en waarvoor hij ook de songteksten schreef, terwijl zijn zoon James een belangrijke bijrol heeft. De film, een cultfavoriet in de drive-ins in het diepe zuiden, is zoals Mitchum: stoer, relaxed, eigengereid en met een air van verzet. De Mitchum-cool. (LJ)

Henry Andersen EN | “...free market, frikandel, Frida Kahlo,

freeze, France, finance, violence, fiancé, Beyoncé…”: this is only a small selection of the word list that Henry Andersen has been compiling for just over two years. “The list now has more than 5,000 different words, each of which sounds slightly different from the word before and after,” the 24-year-old Australian artist tells us. After studying music composition in Berlin, he moved to Elsene/Ixelles. What started as a word game has now become a way of ordering his life. “The words allow me to look back to a certain place or context. That’s why it is important for the list to be chronological and long. When I still lived in Germany, there were more German words on the list. Now that I am living in Brussels, the number of French words is increasing, though the occasional Flemish term or name, which to me sounds very exotic, also sneaks in. Like ‘frikandel’ or ‘Molenbeek’ — I like the combination of the soft ‘m’ and hard ‘k’. I enjoyed switching languages the most. For example, ‘Jasper Johns’ is followed by ‘jus de pomme’.” Henry Andersen has always been interested in language. He was already writing texts even when he was a member of noise-rock bands in Perth or experimenting with electronica. The classes he took in Berlin with the leading 46 b ruzz

Austrian composer Peter Ablinger ultimately became a stepping stone to a Master in Fine Arts at the KASK in Ghent, where his perspective is currently being broadened to spaces and images. Among other things, he makes room dividers, and he gives workshops on the various ways of reading a text. “I always composed music from nothing, for a specific instrument, while what I actually needed was a broad foundation that I could fall back on. My word list also has the advantage of being adjustable to several disciplines and contexts.” Andersen is coming to the KRAAK festival (3 > 5/3) to present a preview of Stanzas or the law of the good neighbour, his debut LP that will be released at the end of May. You hear two people read a fragment from the word list simultaneously. “It is a mix of native and nonnative speakers, men and women, but they are all friends and they all live in Brussels. The context is still important, but I also wanted to express something of the dynamism between the performers and how their mutual relationship can change during the 25-minute reading session, which was recorded in one take in a studio in Schaarbeek/Schaerbeek.” “I especially love the scale of the Brussels scene. Stanzas, the book

For the Tumultingent arts festival, Henry Andersen made little books with fragments from his word list. “I left them on barstools, and once a day, somebody came and read aloud from them unannounced.” But usually he just gives the books, which have a very limited print run, to the friends who have helped him by reading his Stanzas. This poetic term, which is often used as a synonym for couplet, acquires a new meaning with every performance, installation, or reading.
