In Praise of Crazy Musicianship

oblique music EN | Cinéma Nova has existed for twenty years (plus a week and a half to be exact). Belgium’s premier art house and socially committed cinema is not planning on letting the fact go by unnoticed, and is screening two films about musicians who are just as wilful. Despite the many great names in the credits and the (exaggeratedly) enthusiastic British reviews, Frank was not released in Belgium. But it is a strange film about a strange Frank, purportedly played by the brilliant Michael Fassbender. The problem is that we’re not completely sure about that because Frank conceals his face inside a big papier-mâché head. Even when he performs with The Soronprfbs, a band that sounds like what you would expect from a band who call themselves The Soronprfbs. Frank drinks through a straw. The film doesn’t really explain why he maintains the masquerade offstage as well. He is clearly not completely right in the head, but the film does not present Frank as a freak to entertain the audience. Slightly too much of the film is lost to telling the story from the perspective of the rather boring new keyboard player who has just joined the band and wants to make it more popular. But ultimately, you appreciate and understand Frank and his need for music. Scriptwriter Jon Ronson based the film on his experiences as the keyboard player for Frank Sidebottom, the alter ego of cult figure Chris Sievey. Apparently he also had difficulty taking off his papier-mâché head after performances. Cinéma Nova is also screening a documentary which is even more of an incentive to philosophise about the wild adventures you can have when you stick it to the mainstream. Imagine Waking Up Tomorrow and All Music Has Disappeared follows Bill Drummond while he cruises around England and randomly invites people temporarily to join his choir, The17, and to maintain one note together. Drummond strives for the complete democratisation of music. He used to be the frontman of the popular British dance combo The KLF and challenged the music industry by burning one million pounds and touring with the film. Few people understood it. (NR)
