The British Arrows 2023 Book of the Night
Foreword –Jani Guest & Clare Donald Chairs of the Board
This has been a difficult foreword for us to write, as it’s our last as Co-Chairs. It has been such a privilege to witness the extraordinary work from you, our industry peers over the last 4 years. A true honour. We feel our industry has achieved so much, despite all the challenges of Covid, inflation and recession over this time. We shall miss you all terribly.
We’re proud that we leave The British Arrows in a position of strength and will be handing the helm to the next Chair - the amazing Mr Simon Cooper, a most safe pair of hands. During 2020 when the show was cancelled at the last minute, we had legitimate concerns that our 40+ year legacy would come to a natural end. As a not-for-profit organisation, losing the income from an event is crushing. It was the work of the indefatigable Lisa Lavender and the British Arrows team, supported by the entire industry (you) that allowed us to carry on. Now in 2023, we are still receiving huge numbers of entries, the show is another sell-out, and we have more sponsorship support than ever. We travelled to Minneapolis to strengthen our ties with The Walker Art Center, and we continue to work on potential international partners for the Arrows.
In addition, we launched the Young Arrows in June last year, to celebrate and support emerging talent in our industry. We truly believe it will generate a wholly new cohort of diverse young people into this amazing industry that we love. These new awards were so well received; we are thrilled to establish them as a permanent feature on our calendar and entry will open in May with the award show scheduled for early November.
We were delighted when Alex Grieve, Global CCO at BBH, and Sara Dunlop, Director/ Partner at The Corner Shop, agreed to take on the roles of Arrows and Craft chairs. They selected two incredibly talented juries, and we spent a total of 6 fascinating days debating the merits of this year's entries. It was a tough competition - the standards have been high and we’re so excited to reveal the overall winners this evening. There is a huge amount to celebrate. And what better place to do it, back in the Grosvenor House hotel, where we (somewhat raucously) reunited post Covid in March last year.
And now the section for thanks. None of this extraordinary activity would have happened without the glorious British Arrows team: Lisa Lavender, Sergio Colina Restrepo, Sophie Cantopher and our fabulous creative director Michael Lenz. Not only do you give so much of your time and care to making the Arrows great, but you manage to maintain compassion, kindness and humour in the face of every single challenge. Thank you.
Thank you also to our wonderful jury Chairs, Alex and Sara, and to our incredible jurors who gave so much of their time, wisdom and wit. And to our sponsors, old and new. Without you, we simply could not do what we do.

We’d also like to thank the British Arrows board, who have been so supportive over the last four years. In particular, we’d like to thank Anne Batz of Talent Republic who helped us secure our amazing host for this evening, Rylan.

It seems that each year, we are faced with ever more challenges. But our ability to continuously unite with compassion and creative integrity provides the optimism for the year ahead. We are so proud to have played our part in leading The British Arrows. It has been an honour that we will never forget. And we thank all of you, particularly our board and sponsors, for your continued support over the past 4 years of our tenureship.
Clare and JaniForeword
–Alex Grieve Chair of the ARROWS Jury Global and London CCO, BBH

I like wine. But, truth be told, I know next to nothing about wine. The different grapes, the soils, the south-facing slopes of particular chateaus. It’s all a bit of a mystery.
But I guess it must matter because some years are just better than others: more depth, more complexity; they linger in the memory.
So, to torture the analogy, are this year’s Arrows a vintage year? Well, yes & no. The very best of the work was like a sumptuous 1990 Pauillac (it’s a banger) but some of it, unfortunately, was like a warm bottle of Blue Nun (those of you born after 1985 may need to google this).
Ironically, given we’re on the subject of wine, the Alcohol category was disappointing. But not as disappointing as Automotive.
What’s going on here?
These used to be the blue-chip categories responsible for some of the greatest advertising Britain has ever produced.
Now it’s like creativity is viewed as an onerous form of taxation they will do anything to avoid paying.
Come on people, we can do better than this.
And whilst the best of the work told their stories in varied and beautiful ways, too much of it employed a Maximalist Crash! Bang! Wallop! style where the camera insisted on dashing around like a puppy with an erection who’s just downed a can of Red Bull. Modern life is fast and stressful enough, can we all just slow things down a bit?
But enough of my grumbles.
Great work is always a rare and wondrous thing. And this year produced some truly great pieces. Work that punched us in the solar plexus. Work that once seen meant we would never see the world in the same way again.
So, let’s be thankful for that.
Let’s be thankful that after the horrors of Covid and the sensation of being locked in a Groundhog Day Permacrisis we are all still summoning the energy, the talent and the resilience to push the creative envelope.
And on a personal note I would like to thank the incredible jury with whom I had the privilege to spend three days shooting the shit about ads. It was fun, it was frank, it was fair. Thank you also to the legends that are Clare & Jani and all at British Arrows. Finally, thank you to everyone who entered.
You may have won big, you may have won small.
You may not have won at all.
But you made something. You learnt something. You’re now better. And that deserves a toast.
Maybe with a fine red. Burgundy is good. Apparently. Cheers.

Foreword –

Making films, whatever the length, is about making choices - from what crew to work with, to what shots to pick. But it starts with what script to make. Over the years I’ve reduced my criteria down to three words:
MOVING - PROVOKING - ENTERTAINING
As I director, if I think I have a chance of making people feel one of these, I’m in and the work starts.
So, I hoped these words would resonate with this year’s craft jury too. Because isn’t that what we all want? To make an audience feel something? It isn’t only about making people cry (although I think a few tears were shed). What about a chuckle or a smile? Or to simply feel seen.
This year’s work was varied and managed to capture all of the above, which brings me to the craft.
It’s hard to look at work in isolation; to unpick the grade from the cinematography, the sound design from the editing or the writing from the direction, but this is what the craft awards are for. To celebrate the people that help breathe life into the work. To acknowledge their contribution as invaluable, in fact undeniable. They say it takes a village to raise a child. All I know, is it takes a bloody good crew to make a great film.
So, in a dark room, the jury deliberated the latest trends in cinematography, feats of physical engineering in production design and how to make a child cry on cue. But what I hope we all came away agreeing on is that, in the end, the whole is more than the sum of its parts. That when we watch something that is faultlessly crafted we cease to notice the craft involved in making it.
And that’s the magic of film.
Thank you to Clare, Jani, Lisa and Sergio for trusting me as the British Arrows craft chair this year. And to my awesome jury - hope you enjoyed it as much as me.
I left my three days in a darkened room feeling invigorated in the knowledge that if we do our jobs well, maybe, just maybe, we all have the power to make an audience feel moved, provoked and entertained.

We believe in the power of difference to make a difference. We are ranked as the most effective creative agency in the UK (IPA), and the fourth in the world (Warc Effective 100). BBH is part of Publicis Groupe and has offices in London, New York, Singapore, Shanghai, Mumbai, LA and Stockholm and employs 1000 staff worldwide. We are proud to have consistently been named as one of the Sunday Times’ 100 Best Companies to Work For for the past decade.
CHEAT | www.cheatit.co
Cheat is a new kind of post production studio, run by creators for creators. We use the magic of craft to move storytelling forever forwards. Founded in 2015, Cheat is known for its colour and finishing work across all forms of motion picture. From our East London studio and beyond, we bring you bold vision, considered innovation, and exceptional craft.
Behind the scenes, we’re invested in innovation. Years of R&D, proprietary creative tools and film emulation mean we’re constantly finding new ways to deepen the emotive impact of your work and make the process streamlined, transparent and fun.
Everything we do is in service of the work. Our accomplished roster of colourists have backgrounds in production design, photography, VFX and beyond. This knowledge informs our craft, helping you harmonise the look of your story with artistic sensitivity.
Without the generosity of our sponsors the show wouldn’t be possible.
CLEARCAST | www.clearcast.co.uk
Clearcast is best known for clearing ads.
In the UK, broadcasters mustn’t show ads that are misleading, harmful or offensive. So before ads are shown, we check they comply with the UK Code of Broadcast Advertising. We make it easy for brands to advertise responsibly.
We’re proud to play a much wider role in the world of TV advertising and are partners in the advertising process from script to screen. Whether agencies and advertisers are short on time, struggling with complex claims, or need advice on set, we’ve got it covered.
Our award-winning Training Programme welcomed 700+ delegates in 2022, offering unique advice on the clearance process and hot topics like gambling rules and environmental claims. We listen to our friends in the industry about what’s needed for a smoother ride and collaborate with the right teams to harness new technologies and produce innovative and streamlined products and services. An example of this would be the 2022 launch of our optional delivery service, which takes place in parallel to clearance.
We’re committed to making ads more accessible. With our new submissions system, The Library, we’ve introduced a subtitling marketplace, giving advertisers the choice to add subtitles in parallel to the clearance process, and connecting them to subtitling providers. The Library also contains a tick box for agencies to declare if the ad is subtitled, allowing us to report levels back to the industry.

Electric
Theatre Collective | www.electrictheatre.tv
As Edison was to the lightbulb, and Victor Frankenstein was to dead body parts, and Bob Dylan was to acoustic Bob Dylan, so Electric Theatre Collective is to, er… not electric theatre collectives... of which there are none in the field of visual effects, so that is a pretty poor analogy. But what can we say? Everyone at Electric is tired, so very tired, just flat out producing ground-breaking work and winning awards since we burst onto the scene in 2011, like a reanimated rampaging monster with bolts in its head. Our brains are fried and no good for analogies, only for VFX.
Put simply, and slightly more seriously, we are a collective of artists who pride ourselves on being a hub of talent across all disciplines of visual creativity - CGI, 2D, animation and colour grading. And that, for now, is about all there is to say about ETC, except that ETC stands for et cetera, and there is indeed much more to come!

Awarded to Kim Gerhig
Written by Tim Nash, Co-founder, Somesuch
I’ve known Kim Gehrig for the best part of 25 years. She is one of my closest friends and collaborators.
In the increasingly ephemeral world of advertising and short form content, her work has made a lasting impact on culture. It has changed behaviour and attitudes. It has redefined the way we see things. Kim’s work transcends.
In the early years of Somesuch I remember trying to sell her on an average script. In true used car salesman fashion I told her I thought it could be good. She paused, looked me in the eye and told me, “Tim, good is the enemy of great.” I didn’t know what to say. I later found out that it was an old Mark Waites line from her days as a creative at Mother. Kim has always known a great line when she hears it. She pushes. She strives. She distills. She always looks for the essence, the truth — the truth of a concept, the truth of an image. And therein lies the province of great.
This left brain rigour paves the way for right brain alchemy. Lizie Gower used to talk about ‘fairy-dust’ directors, those that can sprinkle magic. Kim is a fairy-dust director. She conjures. Over time you learn to recognise that conjuring. She grows quiet, eyes narrowing, looking askance, fringe ruffled, lost in concentration. Then she walks into a room and says things like, “I can see this film now. It’s singing vaginas.”
Kim would never consider herself a political film maker. But her work is political in that it deals with the dynamics of power and representation. For so long advertising has been predicated on the male gaze, on controlling the way women are supposed to look and behave, on controlling the way they relate to their bodies, to their sexuality. Kim’s work liberates those bodies and frees them from shame. But more than that she celebrates people in all their rich complexity. Her lens inspires as it captures human joy, finding rhythm and music in the everyday.
It’s not easy being a woman in the advertising industry. It’s even harder being a working mother, caught in that limbo between feeling like you’re never enough or being told you’re too much. Kim has been patronised, dismissed, talked over, mis-gendered, mansplained; she’s been called scary when advocating for herself; she’s been labelled a femi-nazi by the Daily Mail; she’s endured online bullying and rape threats. But her body of work is the loudest rebuke. From ‘This Girl Can’, to ‘Viva La Vulva’, to ‘Make Movies like the Movies’, to ‘The Greatest’, among many others, she has earned her place in the pantheon of great directors, while opening the door for a generation of film makers.
The late great Steve Golin once told me that the first responsibility of a film maker is to show up everyday. Kim wakes up everyday with the simple intention of trying to make something great.
I am in awe of her.

CALM believes that no one should live miserably.
That suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.
That losing 125 lives to suicide every week is fucking unacceptable.
That talking openly and unapologetically about suicide is the key to preventing it.
It’s this belief that drives CALM to embrace nothing but the very best creative ideas.
Ideas that create hope.
Ideas that change lives.
Ideas that challenge the status quo.
That’s why they published real suicide notes in national newspapers.
Why they put 84 figures on top of one of London’s most prominent buildings.
Why they showed the world’s greatest fighter battling with an invisible opponent.
Why they told the story of an England football player feeling completely alone in front of millions.
Why they made a film that captures the raw and real fragility of mental health.
And why they exhibited the last photos of people who went on to take their own lives.
These were brave ideas that pushed boundaries.
They broke silence and shattered stigma.
They raised money and changed culture.
They even had government ministers appointed.
But most importantly, they saved lives.

We have worked hard to produce an event with a reduced impact on the environment, in collaboration with industry initiatives AdGreen and ISLA
Printed on paper made under the strictest environmental certifications - ISO 14001 and EMAS – and PEFC and FSC chain of custody certification, thereby guaranteeing the wood and pulp used as raw materials have been sustainably sourced.
STAGING & TECHNICAL (SFL)
Using electric vehicles to transport crew where possible All equipment coming from one location to reduce trucking Staging solutions are used between events and any consumable materials are recycled SFL use green sourced power at our premises via Octopus We are also part of Isla which is a trade body looking at ways to make the events industry more sustainable
VENUE & CATERING
Marriott strives to be a force for good. Our sustainability and social impact platform, Serve 360: Doing Good in Every Direction, guides our path to making a positive and sustainable impact wherever we do business.
