The British Arrows 2024 Book of the Night
It was obviously an enormous honour to be asked to take over as chairman of the Arrows Board last year…
At 48 years old, The Arrows remains the most important, the most respected and the most influential awards event in the UK calendar.
But at a time when making good work is becoming exponentially more difficult each year, there was also the potential, in stepping clumsily into the immaculate shoes of outgoing chairs Jani and Clare, to find myself presiding over an event and an organisation that was seen as something of an indulgence or worse, an irrelevance. Nothing, I am pleased to say, could be further from the truth.
The second Young Arrows in November was an enormous success, massively oversubscribed and a conclusive demonstration of the burgeoning and resourceful talent flooding into the industry, bursting with new ideas, new voices and fresh enthusiasm. The third Young Arrows will be at The Outernet, utilising the larger capacity and the cutting-edge audio and visual opportunities there, and will be free to enter, removing all barriers to entry and further encouraging the next generation of talent on which we all depend. Continuing to grow and extend the Young Arrows’ reach and our connections and support for other gateway organisations is central to the Arrows remit for the coming years.
In November, Lisa and I attended the opening Brit Night’ at the incredible Walker Arts Centre in Minneapolis where over the course of a month over 30,000 members of the public came to watch 75 minutes of last year’s Arrow winning ads curated by the Museum, something Mid-West audiences have been doing for over 35 years. British advertising still carries that kind of interest and enjoyment abroad, and we are working to extend that influence into other territories.
And the main show this year has seen record entry numbers for a single year and, as always, a full sell out of tickets for the evening.
With the incomparable industry legends Ana Balarin and Rick Russell as jury chairs and a stellar jury line up, including Savanah Leaf, fresh from Bafta film success, we spent 6 days watching work that I believe was some of the most creative, refreshing and entertaining work that we have seen for years.
Any one of four or five films could have won Commercial of the Year in other years. We must have watched the EE films, The Channel 4 idents, Vanish ‘Me, My Autism and I’, 30 times or more, and I would have happily carried on watching them again and again. Despite all its fragmentation, moving image advertising is still the most effective form of advertising when it is engaging. These were all exceptionally

engaging pieces of work and there were many, many more. We should all be collectively proud that we are able as an industry to continue to produce work of this calibre with an everdecreasing portion of the marketing pie and in a landscape of creeping in-house expediency.
The Arrows stands as a testament to, and celebration of, the very best in moving image advertising, and has a vital role to play in continuing to promote British excellence around the world and in providing support and validation to the next generation of talent coming into the industry.
None of which would be possible without the incredible Arrows team of Lisa, Sergio, Sophie, Millie and creative director Michael Lenz; the generosity and commitment of all our sponsors each year and to you all buying tickets for, and attending, this spectacular night of celebration. Enormous thanks and appreciation to all.

Foreword –
Ana BalarinChair of the ARROWS Jury
Chief Creative Officer, Wieden+Kennedy

The British Arrows were the first awards Hermeti and I ever won, for the first work we ever made, so they have always held a special place in our memories - and our home-office shelf. Being invited to chair its jury felt like a homecoming of sorts. Thank you Simon and Lisa for having us. Well, mostly me, as Hermi disappeared down a pitch-shaped hole right in the middle of judging.
It was only my second time being in a dark room talking about other people’s work since we unconsciously and collectively decided to get on with it. And moved on we have.
Not having to make allowances for post-pandemic jitters was a relief. Getting to be honest and not just polite, “because, you know, all things considered”, was also a plus. The shadows of tight budgets and ridiculously short timelines still loom large, but glimpses of ambitious briefs and of clients willing to trust the power of creativity could be found if you squinted hard enough.
The work that rose to the top was light, knowing, of the twinkle-in-the-eye quality. There was striking looking and sounding stuff, and I’m sure Rick will elaborate on that, but at the heart of it was a simplicity and honesty that felt exciting and refreshing. Almost nothing felt overplayed, either for laughs or tears. Not a lot of gimmicks. Not many WTFs of the bad kind. A healthy amount of ‘I wish I had done that’.
Mostly though, the work that stood out was genuinely entertaining. Sitting through hours of it didn’t feel like watching the ads, but more like watching the main thing. And if it managed to entertain a generous but jaded bunch, who have seen and done it all, it’s a sign that we are back on the right track. Let’s keep on going, and winning.

The time has come ‘folks’ to revel in another quiver of arrows!
It’s been an absolute pleasure and a privilege to chair the craft jury this year to assess the work in the company of some of my favourite industry legends.
Last year was extremely challenging for most of our industry with a UK economy weathering multiple headwinds, some global and some self-inflicted. In an atmosphere of anxiety and lack of confidence of many clients, it is a testament to the tenacity and passion within our industry that creative teams, production companies and post companies continued to produce some truly outstanding work.
The process of whittling down the field to the best of the best has been both enthralling and inspiring. As always, the cream rises to the top.
Viewing the work with each esteemed jury really highlights the expert insight and experience they all have in the varied crafts of our industry. At a time of imminent disruption to our universe with AI, it is a timely recognition of the immense skill and craft required to achieve the highest level of creative work which is ultimately a human endeavour.
Training as a film editor in a time of cutting celluloid with a razor blade and sellotaping together, the transition to digital non-linear systems was feared initially to be an existential threat. What became clear was that the craft of film editing is as much about creative ideas, story-telling, sensibilities for music, judgement of performance, pace and style than the aptitude for the tools.
I was struck by the very diverse work entered this year. It was interesting to see that the juries were often comparing extreme opposites in scale and genre, which focused everyone on looking for and feeling that elusive quality - excellence. Even after thoughtful and passionate debate, the best crafted work stood out with panache and authenticity.
The care and diligence of the jury in assessing the entries is only made possible by the amazing team at British Arrows. I would like to thank Simon and The Board for inviting me to chair and Lisa, Sergio, Sophie and Millie for making the whole process extremely smooth and enjoyable.
So, fasten your seat belts, take a last desperate swig of warm, sparkling fizz before the flight attendant tries to snatch it from you, let the show begin and enjoy the ride.

As a key part of the TV advertising landscape, Clearcast are keen to be a positive influence in the industry. A particular goal of theirs is to encourage people to make #AdsForAll, by adding Subtitles or Audio Description to ads. Electric Theatre Collective | www.electrictheatre.tv
As Edison was to the lightbulb, and Victor Frankenstein was to dead body parts, and Bob Dylan was to acoustic Bob Dylan, so Electric Theatre Collective is to, er… not electric theatre collectives... of which there are none in the field of visual effects, so that is a pretty poor analogy. But what can we say? Everyone at Electric is tired, so very tired, just flat out producing ground-breaking work and winning awards since we burst onto the scene in 2011, like a reanimated rampaging monster with bolts in its head. Our brains are fried and no good for analogies, only for VFX.
Put simply, and slightly more seriously, we are a collective of artists who pride ourselves on being a hub of talent across all disciplines of visual creativity - CGI, 2D, animation and colour grading. And that, for now, is about all there is to say about ETC, except that ETC stands for et cetera, and there is indeed much more to come!

Fellowship Award
Awarded to Steve Davies
Written by: Lewis More O’Ferrall, Co-Chairman APA John Hackney, Co-Chairman APA Dom Thomas, Managing Partner, Object & AnimalIn 1999 the Chairs of The Advertising Producers Association, Lewis More O’Ferrall and John Hackney set about looking for a more legally oriented CEO to help steer the organisation and guide its members through a rapidly evolving commercial landscape.
At interview it was immediately apparent that, in spite of the candidate’s mild mannered demeanour, his bristling intelligence, wry wit, and appetite to achieve great things shone through. So impressed were they both, they even had to put to one side his support for Tottenham Hotspur.
And so it was that Steve Davies found himself in Beak Street, in an industry which, at the time, he knew almost nothing about.
From day one, Steve wasted no time however. On went the trainers and he visited every single member company in order to better understand their issues and to set about dynamically changing them for the better.
Perceptively, he took away two essential principles facing every member company; that at the core of every production was the need to manage risk and, that at every stage of the process they required certainty on every level - so his primary mission became his effort to grant them both these things.
Those that know Steve know he not only has an agreeable temperament, but is also utterly fearless. He is pragmatic, dogged and fair. So it’s no surprise that not only were APA members winning 100% of industry disputes, but Steve would go further still, by negotiating and introducing new union agreements including fairer working practices and a ten hour day.
He brokered fresh contracts and Tripartite Agreement with Clients and Agencies, re-evaluated the nature of Insurance and generally created a safer, more secure industrial platform fit for the twenty first century.
Consequently, disputes have almost been consigned to history. In so doing, he won the admiration and respect of peers and those on the other side of the negotiating table, recognising a man who goes about his work with much benign kindness at the centre of his being.
Then, without pausing for breath over the coming years, he partnered with the UK government to open up unexplored foreign markets sending promotional task forces to Tokyo (twice), Mumbai, Beijing, Mexico City, Silicon Valley, Seoul and Shanghai, bringing hundreds of millions of pounds of business to the UK.
In the last quarter of a century Steve has transformed The APA from a London-centric organisation of 75 production company members into a globally recognised tour-de-force of over 400 companies across Production, Post, Editors, Musicians, Animators, VFX, Immersive/Experiential and Sound Design.

In 2020 he led us through Covid and it is almost impossible to overestimate the impact he had in keeping our industry from disaster during this time. When our industry was scattered Steve was the glue that kept the community together.
He developed and negotiated an industry-wide modus operandi for a return to shooting, the template for which was adopted by Film and TV around the world, that allowed us, against all the odds, to keep our doors open and remain in business.
Since then, he has introduced a Code of Conduct, set up an Unconscious Bias programme, a Diversity and Inclusion policy, and a Wellbeing directory. He has developed member Marketing Strategies, provided Advice services for Contracts, promoted a Green agenda, partnered with Just Runners and Creative Mentor Network, established The APA Show, masterminded and curated industry events and seminars on a host of subjects, most latterly AI, and, in the process, still managed to make us laugh.
But what stands out to me as his most significant accomplishment is the introduction and growth of The APA Masterclass. I was among the early participants of the programme and the skills it equipped me with nearly 20 years ago were as invaluable to me as I’m sure they’ll prove to the 121 graduates in 2024. This is a man who deeply cares about the future of our industry and has invested in it - to the benefit of everyone in this room.
Whoever you may be, he has time for you, seemingly without limit and, pivotally, has ideas and answers. And he religiously follows up. Always.
How this same individual has the time to be the great family man, play football and be secretary of the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Club, travel the globe and still be up to speed with the latest industry issues is beyond even those who work alongside him and know him well.
So I’m delighted that he’s made time this evening for us to say, Thank You Steve.

EE was born with strong DNA. The lovechild of Orange and T-Mobile. All that creative heritage; from the Orange Film Board that ruined movies with mobile phones to the T-Mobile viral flashmob at Liverpool Street before viral, or flashmobs, were a thing. And of course, the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, when EE was born.
Since then, with strong, nurturing co-parenting from Saatchi&Saatchi, EE had grown into a happy, healthy twelve year old.
But we all need to evolve as we grow, and in 2023 EE was re-launching, as a New EE, in a turbulent/disastrous economic climate with a beyond-fractured media landscape.
Many clients would have taken this as the cue to play it safe.
But the EE/Saatchi instinct has always been to look for the right road, not the comfortable one.
That’s why they’re turning their business from a phone company into an everything-for-your-life platform company.
That’s why they’re not afraid to acknowledge the risks that come with arming a generation of teenagers with social media, and know they have a responsibility to do something about it.
And that’s why they make work like this. Cultural, crafted, modern British work.
To not bat an eyelid when they sign off the idea of ‘wi-fi frenzied kids literally raving before bedtime…set to a monster house tune…shot by Daniel Wolfe.’
And then make no changes to the first edit.
To go through a casting process of almost 4000 real kids to get the truth of what you see in Elliot Power’s ‘Freedom’ film. And then seeing the CEO moved to tears as he watches it.
This just doesn’t happen. But maybe it should more.
In my career, which suddenly appears to be 27 years long despite essentially remaining a teenager myself, I’ve never seen such trust in a creative partnership as this.
This work is a huge testament to the taste and the instinct of Pete Jeavons and Kelly Engstrom, Christian Thrane and Marc Allera, and everyone with them at EE.
They say do your best work on your biggest clients.

We have worked hard to produce an event with a reduced impact on the environment, in collaboration with industry initiatives AdGreen and ISLA
Printed on paper made under the strictest environmental certifications - ISO 14001 and EMAS – and PEFC and FSC chain of custody certification, thereby guaranteeing the wood and pulp used as raw materials have been sustainably sourced.
STAGING & TECHNICAL (SFL)
Using electric vehicles to transport crew where possible
All equipment coming from one location to reduce trucking
Staging solutions are used between events and any consumable materials are recycled SFL use green sourced power at our premises via Octopus
We are also part of Isla which is a trade body looking at ways to make the events industry more sustainable.
