FOREWORDS SIMON COOPER Chair of the British Arrows Board of Directors Regeneration, growth, renewal. Who doesn’t want a bit of that? Emerging talent is the beating heart of our industry, forcing new ideas, new voices and new opinions through the advertising circulatory system. The continued relevance and vitality of our output is reliant on this constant infusion of fresh energy, diverse perspectives and differing outlooks. The Young Arrows is the only awards to recognise and celebrate outstanding work from young and emerging talent across all the disciplines of UK moving image advertising and as such has an enormous role to play in continuing to encourage nascent talent to join the industry and to motivate them to persevere and grow once here. As new Chairman of the Arrows board, I am immensely proud to be introducing only the second Young Arrows awards. Last year was a great success and we have had more entries and I believe an even greater, more consistent level of outstanding work across the categories this year. In Sally, Nikki and James, we had perfect jury chairs who, after assembling a brilliantly diverse, vibrant and opinionated jury, brought a wealth of experience, discernment and just the right level of discussion and debate to our judging day. None of the decisions were unanimous, demonstrating the breadth of talent on show, as you will see. Enormous thanks to all of our sponsors, without whom – it’s a cliché but it is entirely true – none of this would be possible. These important awards are entirely dependent on your generosity. And enormous thanks as always to the wonderful Arrows team of Lisa, Sergio, Sophie and Millie who make it all happen in an exemplary and apparently effortless manner. All creative aspects of the show are also the work of emerging visual and audio talent, under the guidance of Michael Lenz, our Creative Director. They have done an incredible job. We hope you enjoy the show!

NIKKI CRAMPHORN & SALLY PRITCHETT Co-Chairs of the Young Arrows Jury Joint Heads of Integrated Production, adam&eveDDB Welcome to the World of Young Arrows 2023. We were thrilled to be asked to co Chair this wonderful initiative. We all know that The British Arrows have been championing, awarding & celebrating the innovation, bravery & artistry of moving image advertising for many years now. So how wonderful to have an enterprise which is solely dedicated to fostering creativity in our emerging talent … the Young Arrows. Each entry shows the boundless potential within our industry. It reminds us that this younger generation of creatives have voices … they have insights, dreams & visions that deserve our attention & respect. And a platform on which to shine. In only its second ever year, the Young Arrows 2023 encapsulates this potential. And rewards them for it. There are a wide range of categories covering most disciplines. The entry fee is lower & the eligibility criteria is inclusive & reflective of people just starting their journey. Who doesn’t love to win metal. And winning an award can have such a positive impact on these young careers. Helping to shine a light on talent who might otherwise go unseen. Showing our industry that whatever your background, if you have talent, passion & dedication, there is a place to shine & be heard. And it is with great enthusiasm & delight that we introduce you to them. The work we have had the honour to judge over the last few months is a reminder that age is no barrier to wisdom or passion and has the power to inspire, challenge & provoke thought. We hope that the Young Arrows is the first step to propelling this talent into a more creative & brighter tomorrow. We’ve loved every minute of it.

We would like to say a MASSIVE thank you to our wonderful YA Jury. We couldn’t have asked for a more brilliant team, across all & every discipline. Every single one bringing a passion & a point of view that makes our jobs so incredibly worthwhile. From the dedication, time & effort during the online judging process…. to the endless wit & good humour on the live judging day. It was impassioned & oftentimes heated & for that we salute & respect you. THANK YOU. To the wonderful team behind the scenes; Lisa, Sergio, Millie et al. For your endless patience (umm guys sorry we can’t do this, sorry please can we move this, sorry we’re going to have to reschedule, sorry, sorry, sorry ;-) Your guidance, help & support has been amazing & we couldn’t have done it without you. Thank You. To the wonderful Mr Cooper who gently guided us with knowledge & wisdom & the greatest respect. To our Co Chair James … who we laughed & cried with (although that was mainly over our outfits for the Awards). Thank you for being by our side, championing our passion & adding some youth to the line up! So with another year done … please sit back & enjoy. A reminder to let the work be a testament to the resilience, creativity & boundless potential of the talent who have entered. Here’s to the future of our industry!

JAMES SORTON Co-Chair of the Young Arrows Jury Executive Producer I’ve spent the last decade championing emerging talent, and working with some of the most exciting new names in the industry, from directors to producers, creative teams, cinematographers, VFX artists, editors and sound designers; so it was a huge privilege to co-chair the 2023 Young Arrows alongside Nikki Cramphorn and Sally Pritchett. Getting started in any creative industry is a daunting, and often quite overwhelming proposition, but there’s something about starting out in film-making that takes that to another level. As an individual it requires commitment, tenacity and passion, but filmmakers also require encouragement from others, emotional and financial support, and a platform to showcase the work they produce. Young creatives are the future of our industry, so being able to celebrate them with an awards show like the Young Arrows is both exciting and vital. Thank you to everyone who entered their work this year. There were so many great films to watch, many of which the jury hadn’t seen before, and many that provoked very thoughtful, and sometimes heated discussion. Huge congratulations to the winners and everyone that made the shortlist. Thank you also, to the talented group of people that made up this year’s jury, and to Simon Cooper, Lisa Lavender, Sergio Colina-Restrepo and the whole British Arrows team. Lastly, I’d urge the wider industry to take note of the new talent that we have in our midst and to back them with wholehearted enthusiasm. These people are the stars of the future.

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CALM thecalmzone.net Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) has been uniting the UK against suicide since 2006. That means standing against feeling hopeless, standing up to stereotypes, and standing together to show life is always worth living. Every week 125 people in the UK take their own lives. CALM exists to change that - by offering life-saving services, provoking national conversation, and bringing people together to reject living miserably. Through their campaigns they challenge stereotypes and challenge the stigma that prevents people talking about suicide, using music, sport, art and anything in between to get their message across and to help people find the strength to seek help. From Project 84 to The Invisible Opponent, to the multi-award winning The Last Photo their campaigns create real impact, get people talking and, crucially, change the conversation around suicide. Working with some of the biggest organisations in the UK they’ve achieved amazing things, including the appointment of the world’s first ever minister for suicide prevention.
THE YOUNG ARROWS AWARDS 23
15
Hi Young Arrows, I should probably start with who I am. I’m CEO of Campa ign Against Living Miserably - that’s CALM and we’re a suicide prevention charity. Granted, not the kind of person usually featured in the Young Arrows programme. So why? CALM’s history is defined by creativity. We’ve always worked with a spectacular roster of artists and creatives - from early campaigns like Man Dictionary and Notes to those in more recent years like Project 84, The Invisible Opponent and The Last Photo. And that leads us to today. We’re the mostawarded brand in the world in 2023, which might sound odd. Charities don’t mix with innovative, boundary-pushing creativity. Do they? Well, that’s the rug pull. The answer is yes. 125 people take their own lives every week in the UK. That’s around 6500 people a year. It’s the leading cause of death for people under 35 and for every death there are 25 attempts. 1 in 5 of us will have suicidal thoughts. That’s a lot of people living misera bly and it’s clear from these devastating stats that what we’re doing as a society to prevent suicide isn’t working. Suicide prevention needs a shake-up. And that’s what CALM exists to do. For hundreds of years, society has been using shame and fear to try to stop suicide. The thinking being if you make people afraid, you’ll preven t suicide. But instead of preventing suicide, it’s created a culture of shame. It’s made talking about suicidal thoughts or mental health struggles harder. It’s stopped people from reaching out for help. And if you can’t talk about something for fear of being shamed, outed, or judged, then you sure as hell can’t deal with it. That’s where we come in. We’re against living misera bly. Instead of using fear and shame, we use joy, humour and creativity to make suicide something we can talk about and tackle. Every one of us needs to know what to do when things get tough, when life starts not to feel worth living - whether it’s for yourself, your mate, or your mum. And that’s why we make it our business to be in the places where people actually enjoy stuff. Not just in drab GP waiting rooms - so we can reach as many people as possible with our life-saving messa ge. And to do that, we need to be creative. We need to insert ourselves into their lives and their spaces. We need to be relatable and accessible, which means we need to compete in the same arena as brands and ads that are trying to do the same thing. We need to change behaviours. We need to communicate That’s central to our strategy. To make suicide front and centre. To make support easy and accessible. The how? The possibilities are endless. It can be a jaw-dro pping campaign activation. A film that makes you stop in your tracks. Out of home that actuall y ‘gets it’. That’s where you come in. We’ve put together a brief, it’s up to you to use your creativity, your humour (yes, humour) and, well, whatever tools you have in your arsenal to get the message across and help our audience look after themselves and their mates. And don’t forget, CALM’s here for you too. The creativ e industries can be high-pressure, especially when you’re starting out. If you’re struggling, we’re here, there’s always a way forward. Always a reason to Stay. And finally, thank you. Thanks for the creative gold I don’t doubt we’ll start seeing from you, if not now, in the future. If we’re going to make a difference, creativity is where it starts. Simon
HI, WE’R E AGAINST LIVING MISERABLY Want a chance to work with CALM and get your content across our website and social? This brief’s got you covered. We’re all about helping people find the support they need. Our site and socials are full of resources that break down tough topics into accessible content. Because the more engaging a piece is, the more likely people will be to learn and share key
information that could help save a life. Our CALM Guides provide information and practical, nonclinical advice on everything from anxiety and suicidal thoughts to relationship breakdowns and exam stress. But we want it to do more. We want people to like, share and talk about our content. We want them to send it to their mates. We want it to stop them scrolling on the commute. We want them to hard relate.
THE BRIEF We want you to create a film based on our Worried About Someone Guide. We’re after one film that can be split into 3 or 4 standalone parts. This means we can share the film as a whole on our website but also share each section in snackable chunks across TikTok and Instagram.
We want this to be practical and helpful but also fresh and interesting - there’s free reign to explore common cultural moments and references. And don’t be afraid to use humour. The most important thing is to make sure more people learn this lifesaving advice.
