Foreword – Jani Guest & Clare Donald Chairs of the Board
We were both extremely honoured to have been nominated as the new co-chairs of the British Arrows last year, and it’s amazing how quickly that year has gone. Taking over the helm in such a turbulent political and economic landscape, we wondered what the impact of that would be on the British Arrows. Thankfully, and to our utter delight, the industry has once again proven its resilience and commitment to forever forging outstanding work despite the many obstacles it might face. If there was one particular theme that pervaded the work, it was that this magnificent island committed itself in 2019 to messaging that reflected the larger global discussions happening at the moment - the future of our environment and racial and gender equality, to name just a few. We love that the industry continues to champion real change. The judging was a triumph. We appointed two extraordinary Chairs: Hollie Walker, Creative Director at Wieden+Kennedy to lead the Arrows, and Matthew Fone, Owner of Riff Raff Films for the Craft Awards. They brought so much to the table and we cannot thank them enough. As for the awards themselves, we’ve mixed that up too. We wanted a show that honoured the winners, without its duration feeling overly indulgent. And we feel, and hope you agree, that we’ve cracked a clearer way to applaud your work. We are transitioning the British Arrows Doorway (BAD) initiative into the new Young Arrows Awards, renewing our efforts to support young people from diverse backgrounds and expanding our reach to the BAME, LGBTQ and disabled communities. We have also strengthened our relationship with The History of Advertising Trust, supporting its indispensable role as the archive of all the great work we produce. We’ve been to Minneapolis to promote the unique relationship that the British Arrows has with the Walker Art Center. It was overwhelming to see how much excitement there is in the Purple City for your work (Prince is from Minneapolis in case you’re confused by the purple ref...). In one month, 35,000 people attended the exhibition to watch and admire the work you create. We negotiated a further three years with the Walker folk and we really want to expand this opportunity to champion British advertising further afield.

And as for the work…! Another record year from you clever people. Entries were up by 15%, from 149 companies - 28 of whom had never entered before. We sold all our tickets in record time, and we spent 7 full days with our amazing 51 jurors carefully and sometimes robustly debating the relative strengths of all the fabulous films you’ve submitted. It’s so wonderful to see that the British Arrows is still dear to such a huge and diverse community - thank you for your work, your passion, your time and your support. It should be noted that we couldn’t have done any of this without the amazing support of Lisa Lavender, our new Operations Director, alongside her team. Thank you, Lisa. We are so thrilled to have been given the opportunity to chair the British Arrows. It’s as dynamic as the industry we love: ever changing, ever growing and ever adapting as we face the struggles that modern Britain throws at us. You all do it with bravery, wit and charm. The Awards Show is a fabulous reflection of that. We very much hope you enjoyed the evening as much as we have enjoyed putting it together. Jani & Clare (continued) THE BRITISH ARROWS AWARDS 2020

Foreword continued... Jani Guest & Clare Donald Chairs of the Board
Dear Industry Friends, Please indulge us for a moment… We were asked to be the new Chairs of The British Arrows in 2019, and duly wrote our forward for the 2020 show early last year when coronavirus was a far-eastern whisper. We dismissed those early concerns about what it might mean for the show as simple paranoia. As we happily penned our excitement about our first awards show as Chairs, we could not have begun to imagine how far reality was going to take us. And here we are, almost exactly one year from our previous date, at last managing to celebrate your brilliant work – both from the original 2020 awards as well as our Made In Lockdown category that had such overwhelming engagement. We decided to publish our words from last year alongside this updated piece, because it’s such a dramatic documentation of how much has changed since Covid hit our industry so hard. 2020 provided challenges for everyone; but what prevailed was that the love of storytelling withstood the pressures of the pandemic. We were thrilled to see the number of entries for our ‘Made In Lockdown’ category, and the incredible quality you managed to maintain. While the industry proved its strength by weathering the turbulent year, The British Arrows wanted to contribute by supporting young people in their aspirations to become part of our industry. We announced our partnership with Create Jobs at A New Direction to launch their Future Creative Content Now course. The six-week, multidisciplinary, content creation course will allow young people to gain and develop skills in digital storytelling & production. We are delighted to be a part of supporting the next generation of storytellers. And finally, we would like to congratulate all of you for continuing to show your resilience and courage over this past year. As Co-Chairs of The British Arrows, we remain humbled, honoured, and proud to be part of this remarkable industry. And although it is a virtual event, we do hope that you have all enjoyed watching this evening’s British Arrows 2020 show. Jani & Clare

Foreword – Lisa Lavender British Arrows Operations Director
In May 2019 Clare left me a message saying she had something odd to ask me. Intrigued I of course called her straight back. Never in a million years would I have guessed that call would lead to me putting on The British Arrows 2020 Awards. Having spent my entire career in this industry – in the early days making ads but for the last 20-plus years trafficking and delivering them – to be an integral part of the most prestigious awards business in the UK has been a dream come true. Really! Unfortunately, that dream turned into a nightmare when COVID shut us down just two weeks before the show. Two postponements and a third wave and our plan to return to the Grosvenor House this year fell apart. Not to be beaten, we rolled up our sleeves for a rethink and with our fantastic event company, TBI Media devised the live stream event we hope you enjoyed this evening. A particular highlight from tonight’s show is the Made in Lockdown collaborative film we were able to make with the support of Create Not Hate and The Elements Music. It’s a snapshot in time from one of the most difficult and challenging periods in our industry’s existence and demonstrates how resilient we really can be. This 90 sec film is a little piece of history representing work produced in the first lockdown and the feelings of 16 year old Jaiden Chang reflecting on lockdown life for a teenager. The journey from starting to accept entries to the publication of this book has been a challenging yet joyful one. It’s always a fine line to walk, preserving the legacy of a business with a 44-year history to refreshing and improving things for the future. Whilst we were not able to put all our plans into place the generosity of the industry will allow us to plan the 45th Awards and realise our dream to modernise the Show for this shiny new decade. We have lots of exciting plans to shake up the categories and streamline the awards to fit better the world we operate in, one that is likely to change even more as we come out of the Covid tunnel.

Looking forward, our plans to host the first Young Arrows Awards last October were also impacted. The Young Arrows Awards aim to capitalise on the fantastic work started under our BAD (British Arrows Doorway) initiative, continuing our heritage of honouring the best in moving image commercial content creation from the next generation. The aim of the Young Arrows is to be more accessible to young talent while shining a light across a variety of crafts and skill sets. The plan was to donate the proceeds from the evening to fund a British Arrows and APA-endorsed creative/production training course in Spring 2021. Whilst we could not fulfil that promise we did continue to partner with Create Jobs, a leading employability programme powered by non-profit, A New Direction. Since 2011, Create Jobs has been transforming London’s workforce by supporting and developing individuals who are underrepresented in the creative and digital sectors. Our ambition is to launch Young Arrows fully later this year if the industry recovers sufficiently to support it. Our joint mission is to connect young, diverse talent with development opportunities within our industry. Last but never least, I would like to thank our incredible Board for their ongoing support, especially through the exceptionally challenging past 12 months! Congratulations to everyone who was shortlisted as well as our worthy winners – we are so very proud of the work that we can showcase to the world.

Foreword – Holly Walker Chairwoman of the ARROWS Jury Creative Director, Wieden+Kennedy The advertising world keeps turning. New clients, new techniques, new formats, smarter ways to avoid them. But some things never change. Human beings are story obsessed creatures, every one of us. We’re moved by them, entertained by them, and challenged by them. On the sofa, on the bus, sometimes even on the toilet (I’m told). Great storytelling, well executed, gets all of us, all of the time. Judging the Arrows is a chance to sit at the helm and cast an eye over what this industry is still capable of when it doesn’t shirk its responsibility as crafters of great stories. When it acknowledges that a job worth doing is a job worth staying up all night arguing with a client in another timezone for. We might only be making ads but this is a room full of people who are proof that we can still make some bloody good ones. It was an honour to be asked to chair the British Arrows. It was equal parts draining and inspiring to spend days holed away in that dark room with a bunch of incredibly talented people who even, after three days of watching telly ads solidly, were still excited and passionate about arguing for great ideas. So have a flick through this year’s winners. Remind yourself of the ideas, creativity and craft in this industry. Drink in the quality of emotions we can invoke - the brilliance of the stories that unfold in the mere moments we’re given. See where the ceiling is set, then smash your way right through it. Thank you to Clare, Jani and the Arrows team for having me. It’s been a pleasure.
THE 2021 FOOTNOTE Just as I’d crafted all those fine words about storytelling, our collective story ended up in the shitter. Offices closed. Face to face meetings were halted. Shoots cancelled (how I miss the snacks). And our awards outfits never had the outing they deserved (arguably a blessing.) Whisper it... but it turns out we can still do our jobs from our kitchen, dining, garden and bedside tables. But whilst our new commute has been shorter, the process has not nearly been as fun, inspiring, collaborative or as creative as it should be...as it must be. So, hopefully as you read this things are improving, we’re still washing our hands, but now enjoying non-substantial meals in pubs, and as an industry getting back to what we do best, together.

Foreword – Matthew Fone Chairman of the CRAFT Jury Owner, Riff Raff Films Things that went through my mind being asked and actually chairing the craft jury. Before - Thanks to the people who put me forward and had faith in me, Claire, Jani & Tracey Cooper and The Board of the British Arrows. - Why me? Did they get the wrong person? What do I know that other people don’t? - Humbling, honoured. - Fuck who am I going to choose that is not just someone pushed on me? - Who are the best people I know who can judge this but also the right type of person who won’t be a) annoying b) too loud and opinionated. During - And they need a photo... ok they rejected my photo! - We are the people who decide what is good or not. 20 people in a small room, the audience 1200 people at the Grosvenor House Hotel. - 9am starts are you sure? - Switch brain to awards mode... actually quite enjoying the fact I don’t have to vote. - Is this a good year? Good bunch of people. Day 3 already. I could do with a drink... ...everyone is going home. Picked the wrong people. After I was once on a jury where the chair thought that what was voted on to win would send not just a message BUT a direction out to clients, agencies and production companies as to where advertising should be going. It made me think about what defines the top work and how that should be judged, BUT you can only award what is put in front of you, so any year is dependent on the work to push that direction, a kind of chicken and egg situation. There is always a fight between the creative sections who want to make award winning work that sell brands and products and the brands and marketers who want to make work that increases profits and commercial benefits over ideas. I guess the best work transcends both keeping everyone in the room happy.

This year there was no overall work that swept the board, no Gorilla, no Nike LDNR, no Viva la Vulva, no average Christmas ad that won more than it deserved (thank God). The problem though is when this happens do works like this skew the overall calibre of what we have done in a year, or what is really happening in our industry? Can one or two pieces of work really cover the complex areas we should be addressing in advertising. I do think you need work that asks the question, or rather provides an answer in how it works as piece of communication to the actual audience. And that audience is changing. So, something that works both in social media (yes we need a separate category) as well as the old timers 30 sec cut downs for TV (this is just another screen) is where I think the next piece of outstanding work should be and drag the direction of where our advertising industry should be moving. How people consume, especially the immediacy of social media is a reflection of our society and how it operates, for better or worse so this needs to be an integral part of the craft and ideas of our industry to help us rebalance and push the imbalances I think we all know are self-evident. If there was one take out for me, and it’s the same as that jury conversation, we do need to push the edges to pull the mainstream along, but for me that opportunity is as much in the platforms and consumption as in the idea. But what has always been true for me is the timeline of idea, craft in production, media strategy, engagement should all work together as all parts create that one off. Too many words, but don’t worry no-one actually reads this … you guys asleep at the back wake up. A great thanks to everyone at the Arrows especially Jani, Claire. Lisa and Sergio, and of course all the people on the jury for kindly giving up their time and opinion, very much appreciated. Matthew (continued)

Foreword continued... Matthew Fone Chairman of the CRAFT Jury Owner, Riff Raff Films Revised Intro post Covid. Re-Reading that intro it does seem a lot of words! All I meant to say was in advertising “the idea is still king”. Nothing in the last year has changed my mindset apart from focus it. This idea now more than ever needs to include how people interact and consume digital platforms, social media, good old terrestrial channels. I am not quite sure many pieces of work think of this when they are developed, it’s a deliverable rather than an integral part of the idea. And please don’t use the words 360, or integrated campaign, it never is, or I mean the idea never is. In these terrible Covid times I think there is a thought that rings true, as hard as it may be to think about, that adversity breeds opportunity. Good advertising preempts, reacts, and influences. What I mean by opportunity is all of the above: an idea, how we communicate that idea and how people consume the idea. Within that there also needs to be a need to be more accountable to the social economics and diversity of the consumer. It can seem an impossible jigsaw but something as simple as a burger slowly going mouldy is a great example of how a brilliant idea does all of this, while even taking a pop at its competitors. Or the outstanding taboo breaking bravery of Libresse, which continues to use its risk-taking campaigns to help body positivity and diversity. Advertising in the past used to reflect the state of consumerism, but more and more it is beginning to affect it. So let’s see more of these campaigns at next year’s British Arrows. It’s not about being brave as a CMO its about trusting good ideas and the people who make them. Still too many words. Matthew

Awarded to Paul Silburn (Posthumous Award) Written by Nick Bell One evening in late November last year, I learned that - suddenly and prematurely my friend Paul Silburn had died. At the same time I lost a friend, our industry lost one of its very best. Paul started his advertising career relatively late. And he left it too early. But in the intervening years, Paul created more great work than most people can dream of. If you Google Paul Silburn Home (and I strongly recommend you do), you’ll see what I mean. Paul’s work really did enter both popular culture and awards annuals with extraordinary regularity. He made a fisherman kick a bear in the balls so John West could have the freshest salmon. And he made porn stars wrestle golfers for Sony PlayStation. He made Penguins fly for BBC iPlayer. And he made ‘Ave it’ and ‘Top bombing’ part of the British vernacular. Paul turned Winston Wolfe from Pulp Fiction into the face of Direct Line Insurance. He flash mobbed Liverpool Street Station and had the Royal Family rocking out to ‘House of Love’ to bring world fame to T-Mobile. He made millions of people actually enjoy the British Airways safety video. And he made millions of pounds for Unilever by writing ‘The Lynx Effect’. But for all his success, Paul was just a really good bloke. Anyone who knew Paul would testify that he was that rare being – an outstandingly talented individual whose feet remained firmly planted on the ground. He was, just like the brilliant John Smith’s ads he wrote, No Nonsense! Shortly before Paul left us, Patrick Collister told Paul he believed him to be the best writer of TV advertising since the great John Webster. Humble to a fault, Paul was having none of it. Well I’m sorry my old friend - I’m with Patrick on this one. Every year at these awards, the very best work is recognised with Golds, Silvers and Bronzes. But The British Arrows Fellowship is reserved for serial winners. It is reserved for those who wear out the carpet to this stage year in, year out. Given his outstanding body of work, I am quite sure that at some stage Paul would have won this award anyway. But following his untimely death, the Board of The British Arrows voted unanimously that The British Arrows Fellowship for 2020 should be awarded to Paul Silburn. I wish to God Paul was here to collect it himself.

Awarded to Apple Apple have always known how to make a statement. In fact, their leaders and products are statements in themselves. When it comes to their advertising vision, this is no exception. Apple are one of those brands whose ads transcend the medium. They’re talked about by everyone; from consumers on the street to creatives and commentators alike. They have made it their business to step right up to the status quo, stare it in the eye and subvert it beyond recognition. Breaking and remaking the mould. Demanding our attention with disruption. Ripping up the rule book and writing another one, but one that’s cooler, smarter, funnier – one that just gets us better. They first burst onto our screens and into our advertising consciousness on January 22, 1984, during a break in the third quarter of the Super Bowl. Performance anxiety was never a problem. Statement well and truly made. The ad itself took inspiration from the book 1984, showing an athletic, vital heroine running through an Orwellian world, the only free spirit standing up to Big Brother amongst a grey and passive population. The ad was also a mischievous dig at IBM, and the birth of a rebellious, challenger mindset that has come to define the company and its advertising over the last thirty-plus years – even when they themselves had become one of the most powerful brands in the world. Just like their era-defining products, and their visionary philosophy, their work has become part of our cultural consciousness. In the 1990s, with the help of a cast of notable mavericks from Albert Einstein to Kermit the Frog they encouraged us to ‘Think Different’. In the 2000s, they tempted us to ‘Switch’, or simply to ‘Get a Mac’ and invited us to ask ourselves honestly, whether we were a Mac or a PC (and there was realistically only one cool answer). With the birth of the iPod came the iconic ‘iPod people’ ads, silhouetted images of members of what was quickly becoming the world’s coolest club. Our industry has played a vital role in making Apple’s vision a reality. This creativity, daring and technical expertise has been recognised and celebrated by the British Arrows on countless occasions. In recent years, to launch the iPhone 7, we were treated to ‘Detour’, Michel Gondry’s epic tale of the toddler’s tricycle that gets lost on a family road trip and ends up with a new owner (I’m not crying, you’re crying!). The ‘Welcome Home’ campaign saw a jaded, world-weary commuter re-energised and reminded of her vibrant energetic self by her Apple HomePod. One of this year’s winners, ‘The Underdogs’, tells the story of how a group of regular, slightly geeky, but downright and endearingly normal office colleagues can find their purpose and surprise themselves with what they can achieve if they work hard, commit fully to their ideas and don’t take no for an answer. 36 years on from their first televised advert and many, many products and campaigns later, it’s a message that is still unmistakeably, defiantly Apple. Apple and its products are so embedded in our society, and play such a fundamental role in how we engage with the world and express our identities that sometimes it’s difficult to know where we end and the brand begins. Their advertising is not just a window into this unique brand, but blueprints and signposts for us to follow as they design and create our future culture. Their bold, tirelessly inventive approach to their advertising springs from a belief that creativity is the root of all progress, an idea that resonates with us all. THE BRITISH ARROWS AWARDS 2020
