Foreword – Jani Guest & Clare Donald Chairs of the Board

It’s hard to believe that 2022 is the third year of our co-Chairship, made that bit more surreal by the fact that the show this evening will be our first in-person event as Chairs. Covid knocked us sideways as the 2020 ceremony was cancelled only 15 days before our hugely anticipated return to The Grosvenor House Hotel. We were delighted with the success of our live-stream virtual event in 2021, but it feels SO AMAZING to know that, once again, we can see each other face-to-face and revel in the celebration of this industry’s incredible work. And what a night this is going to be. You have entered more than ever before. We saw a 30% increase v 2019 and 19% v 2020, and the standards are as high as ever. Could there be a greater testament to the resilience of our industry? Because of the scale of entries, we introduced a remote first pass for our two talented juries, and then spent a total of 4 days debating your work, inspirationally led by the amazing Lynsey Atkin, Executive Creative Director at 4creative, for The Arrows and Lisette Nice, Founder & CEO of The Factory Family, for Craft. We have brought in a new entry system powered by BAFTA and launched a revamped website with an easily searchable archive, optimised for mobile. All of this in a year where remote working prevailed, filmmaking continued to be challenging, and infections reached almost 16 million in the UK. Beyond the operational enhancements, we also wanted to use our voice to promote the values we hold close to our hearts. We introduced 3 social impact awards (sustainability, social impact and inclusion) and three free to enter Young Arrows awards (agency, production and craft). We launched a podcast series debating industry issues: sustainability, gender equity, and racial diversity and partnered with Shiny to throw a spotlight on undiscovered Directors. Our work with new and diverse talent is profoundly important to enabling pathways for entry into our industry, for the clear benefit of us all. And now the section for thanks. None of this extraordinary activity would have happened without the glorious British Arrows team: Lisa Lavender, Sergio ColinaRestrepo, and Devon Pearce. Not only do you give so much of your time and care to making the Arrows great, but you manage to maintain compassion, kindness and humour in the face of every single challenge. Thank you. Thank you also to our wonderful jury Chairs, Lynsey and Lisette, and to our incredible jurors who gave so much of their time, wisdom and wit. And finally, but certainly not last to our incredible sponsors, to the new organisations that have joined in this year as well as to those who have continued to support the British Arrows for many years.

Before we wrap this up, we also wanted to recognise you - our industry peers - for your enormous generosity in these adverse times. The British Arrows is a not-for-profit organisation. Our ability to function is purely through the revenue we generate in entries and ticket sales to the Awards event. With 2020 cancelled and 2021 remote, we were considering the survival of our 40+ year institution. For all of you who gifted your ticket refunds from the 2020 show – thank you too. This has genuinely saved the Arrows. By cutting all corners and operating costs, we have been able to continue the work we do in championing the UK industry on an international scale and driving a more equitable intake of talent for our collective future. Our gratitude is fathomless. The last twelve months have been tough, tragically losing too many of our industry friends. But our ability to work together with compassion and creativity gives us huge optimism for the year ahead. We are prouder than ever to play our part leading The British Arrows. We hope you have a fabulous evening in this lovely space. Be kind, be merry and be safe. Clare and Jani

Foreword – Lynsey Atkin Chairwoman of the ARROWS Jury Executive Creative Director, 4creative I have been trying to win a National Lottery rollover since the dawn of this millennium. Failing that (to date), I have taken to chairing this British Arrows rollover year with equal fervour. After all, any attempt of winning either jackpot begs the same important question: Just how much luck is involved? People with talent don’t much like being told fate plays a hand, but the answer will always be ‘some luck is required’. No piece of great work gets made – or awarded – without numerous stars aligning. So the truth is that to some degree, both are a game of chance. Both are determined by a number of factors – including but not limited to just how many people are playing the game. This year’s Arrows had a record number of entries – unsurprising for a two year celebration perhaps, but let’s not forget the wasteland of Spring 2020... The standard of creativity in the work entered this year is remarkable, and as an industry we should be very proud of what we have collectively achieved. But it’s fair to say that even the most special among it has had its work cut out. A few times we wished to award not just one gold in a category, but three, perhaps four. But gold is gold – and we’ve respected its rare treasure. Perhaps in other years, one of the more impressive films here would have run away with the lot. But the stars aligned to give it all some very tough competition. This year the jackpot will be shared – and rightly so. There is simply too much good here for only one winning ticket to prevail. Lottery wins promise big things, big houses with big gardens, big holidays with big drinks, big skies and big freedom. But in the past 2 years, everything has shrunk. We’ve been reduced to ever decreasing bubbles, squares in screens, maximum capacities and minimum joy. It has been the hardest time in most of our working lives – so given the chance, who can blame us for wanting to shoot for big again? Perhaps it’s no surprise we’ve gravitated towards work that has scale. But this isn’t a scale that comes with bloat, greedy on a world (and a budget) that never says no. It’s big because of its humanity – the great stuff tonight takes us somewhere else and rips us out of our enforced confinement. It reminds us there’s a wonderful, complicated mess of other people – of life – outside of our shrunken orbits. The best of it executed with an enviable hand – that seeming lightness of touch and easy flamboyance that comes when people know they’re onto a good thing. So, as we step back out into the light, let’s keep things big. I think it suits us. Thank you to the British Arrows board, Clare, Jani, Lisa, Sergio and everyone else who has allowed me the privilege to chair the Arrows jury of this outstanding year. Thank you to the jurors who were every bit as smart-minded, sharp-tongued and kind-hearted as I knew they would be. What a special thing to be able to do. Thank you – and stay lucky. 8

Foreword – Lisette Nice Chairwoman of the CRAFT Jury Founder & CEO of The Factory Family What an honour it was to chair such a talented and engaged craft jury. Collectively their commitment to ensuring the best work rose to the top was only equalled by the time they dedicated to the process. Thank you for making it such an enjoyable experience. The British Arrows represents all that is wonderful in our industry and I’m incredibly proud to be a part of it. Special thanks to the amazing Lisa, Sergio, Devon, Clare and Jani whose exacting organisation and experience made the process so good. The last two years have been challenging to say the least but with creativity and craft as our drivers we got a sharp reminder of what makes good, great: bold leadership, agility, empathy and compassion. Collaboration, experimentation, innovation and kindness. Judging by the work we have seen, as an industry we should be very proud, we’ve SMASHED IT. Maybe this was because of shared adversity, maybe it was just time to fully embrace technical development, maybe it was our bloody-minded desire to produce brilliant work and be authentic, but we certainly used the time effectively and completely knocked it out of the park. Innovations in technology led the way in problem solving and in doing so became a vital tool in creativity. Change was accelerated and embraced. And, whether your thing is Frank Zappa or Plato we proved ‘Necessity is the mother of invention’. Let’s not forget that we used the time wisely and committed to tackling racism and prejudices that have been left unchallenged for too long. Advertisers and broadcasters took initiatives and launched programs to track and develop diversity, equality and inclusion. They paused selling products and instead promoted values. C4’s ‘Black to Front’ campaign, in conjunction with 60 leading brands, dedicated an entire day of advertising to feature a black lead or majority cast. ITV & Uncommon threw their weight behind the dance troupe Diversity when Ofcom received more than 24,000 complaints with “This is what change looks like. ITV stand with Diversity” and we’ve never been prouder. Bloody brilliant. The last two years have seen times of great loss but also unprecedented opportunities. I hope we take these learnings along with us into our future and embrace the ever-evolving new normal with gusto. Bring it on 2022......

But what can we say? Everyone at Electric is tired, so very tired, just flat out producing ground-breaking work and winning awards since we burst onto the scene in 2011, like a reanimated rampaging monster with bolts in its head. Our brains are fried and no good for analogies, only for VFX. Put simply, and slightly more seriously, we are a collective of artists who pride ourselves on being a hub of talent across all disciplines of visual creativity - CGI, 2D, animation and colour grading. Awarded to Ringan Ledwidge (Posthumous Award) Written by Daniel Kleinman It was with shock and great sadness that in November last year we heard that my friend and colleague Ringan Ledwidge was seriously ill, followed swiftly by the terrible hammer blow of his death at 50. Ring was a both gregarious and yet also very private, very few knew that he had been very stoically battling cancer for some time. Last September, I saw him in LA, he was happy, his prognosis was that he’d finally beaten his illness, he was sitting in the sun with his new baby, his first child, and we talked about his eagerness to get back to work. In a matter of weeks, he was gone, it was very shocking, a terrible loss to his family, friends, colleagues, and as witnessed tonight, to film making and the craft of advertising in general. Ring was undoubtedly in the very top tier of world class directors, his prodigious output was eclectic, ranging over all genres, he couldn’t be pigeonholed. If you were lucky enough to secure him to direct your project then you knew you were going to get something special. Ringan was a man with vast imagination, commensurate skill, an innate sense of humour, pathos, and an ability to get believable and subtle performances from his cast. He could do sexy as well. He created music videos, films and of course famous commercials. One only has to look with astonishment at the body of work he leaves, the amount alone is remarkable, and that everything he directed was fantastically good is frankly almost irritating. He leaves a plethora of well-loved, award-winning ads. I’m not going to list them, there are too many, but we’ll see a short, extraordinary montage in a minute, put together by his long-term editor, thanks Rich. Ring’s legacy will, I’m sure, be of great use and inspiration to students of the future, thanks to bodies like the British Arrows, the BFI, and others. It’s so tragic that he should have had many more years of creativity ahead of him, we’ve been robbed. The thing is, the man himself was so nice, he was tall, handsome, affable, humorous, easy going, loyal and generous to his friends, greatly loved and admired. A bit of a challenge to stand next to in a photo call. He worked by encouragement and inclusiveness, he liked a calm set and a good atmosphere. His confidence meant he didn’t need to be a caricature shouty dick head director, even in times of stress, which we know can occur in our business at times. If I wanted to sum up what he represents, it’s the best of advertising filmmaking, he was an auteur, something becoming rarer in these days of creating by committee, he had a singular vision and was prepared to make sure it ended up on screen, inevitably the result would be an enormous enhancement of the written script. I’d like to thank the British Arrows for acknowledging Ringan and I know his legacy will be cherished by not only his family and mates but also the advertising industry in general. Over the years, I have been lucky enough to make a few ads that have had the same impact as Burberry “Open Spaces”. Cadburys Gorilla and Nike Londoner immediately come to mind, oh and yes, the first Burberry film, Burberry “Festive”. After each one I heard a lot of clients say, ‘we want one of those’, as if they are something you can buy ready-made off the shelf. No wonder when Cadbury “Gorilla” did increase sales by between 7% and 10% dependent on who is taking the credit. Which is incredible really, and does show the real power and possibility of advertising. What these clients really wanted was the impact, the increase in sales, the fact that they transcended their brand’s category. Now that’s a big ask if you start out with a brand brief that lists their brand values and colour palette. Apart from a very good simple idea what all those commercials had in common was two things: – A CMO who had the ambition for their brand, – And TRUST. Which brings me back to Burberry. Burberry briefed Riff Raff and Megaforce and, after a few collaborative sessions, they bought the ideas and let us make them. Naturally, we discussed casting, choreographer, locations and obviously wardrobe but fundamentally they trusted the talent they employed and worked with us. Of course, there were discussions; people passionate about any project will engage in healthy debate, but when you know they trust your talent it becomes a collaborative process, rather than a dictated mandate. And in return we trusted them. We didn’t focus on a more smiling take, argue over VO placement or endlessly debate what more we could put front of frame in a brand colour. A sofa anyone? Burberry understood the impact the film’s idea would have as a branding film. Burberry understood we weren’t selling a new show or jacket. They knew that in tandem the print, social media posts and “Digital Out Of Home” did that, using the simple idea Megaforce created to hang the campaign on. Burberry TRUSTED that the idea was powerful enough to provide the impact they needed from the film. In short, they trusted the people they hired. I know it’s not always that simplistic and the Riff Raff/Burberry way of working may not be suited to some brands, but time and experience tells me this: Have a simple idea, that you can add to. Not a complicated one you can’t afford, that tries to tick too many brand values. It’s easier to add than subtract. Keep the number of people involved to a minimum. Be an advertiser who trusts the people you employ. Be an advertiser who trusts an agency for their ideas. Be an advertiser who trusts a director and the reason you picked them in the first place. Be an advertiser who trusts the production company. Be an advertiser who trusts… Try to be Megaforce. Be Riccardo Tisci. Be Rod Manley. Be Rachel Crowther. Be Burberry. 21

We have worked hard to produce an event with a reduced impact on the environment, in collaboration with industry initiatives AdGreen and ISLA PRINT Printed on paper made under the strictest environmental certifications - ISO 14001 and EMAS – and PEFC and FSC chain of custody certification, thereby guaranteeing the wood and pulp used as raw materials have been sustainably sourced. STAGING & TECHNICAL (SFL) Using electric vehicles to transport crew where possible All equipment coming from one location to reduce trucking Staging solutions are used between events and any consumable materials are recycled SFL use green sourced power at our premises via Octopus We are also part of Isla which is a trade body looking at ways to make the events industry more sustainable VENUE & CATERING Marriott strives to be a force for good. Our sustainability and social impact platform, Serve 360: Doing Good in Every Direction, guides our path to making a positive and sustainable impact wherever we do business. 136
