In der Kunsthalle Z33 in Hasselt hat Francesca Terzo ein verschachteltes Raumkonzept mit einer einzigartigen Hülle umgeben: Tausende handgefertigter Ziegelplatten zieren den Neubau.

At the Z33 art centre in Hasselt, Francesca Terzo developed a nested spatial concept enclosed by a unique envelope. The new extension is covered in thousands of handmade brick tiles.

EI@EB0ME Een eigenbouwer is iemand die bouwt zonder opdrachtgever, zonder aannemer en veelal zonder architect. Hij bouwt in hoofdzaak voor zichzelf. De eigen smaak van de eigenbouwer is richtinggevend. Het is de eigenbouwer die zich onttrekt aan de vele regels die gewoonlijk de praktijk bepalen en hem in een keurslijf dwingen. Dit geeft de intentie weer van de redactie van Eigenbouwer, Tijdschrift voor de goede smaak. Eigenbouwer verschijnt onregelmatig en staat open voor cultuurhistorische bijdragen over architectuur, beeldende kunst, interieurkunst, vormgeving, literatuur, geschiedenis en wat dies meer zij.

Agroforestry en onze infrastructuur Denktank CE Delft bracht eind 2017 in opdracht van Rijkswaterstaat een rapport uit. In het rapport wordt onder meer de conclusie getrokken dat de aanleg van 100.000 hectare bos vanuit het perspectief van klimaatwinst een kosteneffectieve maatregel is.

Natuur in de Wijk is een boost voor biodiversiteit 'Zet groen op de balans, dan vertegenwoordigt het waarde' De groene sector zit in een spagaat: de aandacht voor vergroening is groeiende, maar aan de andere kant is de vakkennis tanende.

Het besef is er wel, zegt Dick Oosthoek, directeur van Stichting Groenkeur. Er is een tekort aan mensen. Toch blijft hij optimistisch.

Door steeds beter geïsoleerde bebouwing en versteende tuinen wordt het voor veel diersoorten steeds moeilijker een plekje te vinden om te foerageren en te nestelen. Het Brabantse initiatief Natuur in de Wijk probeert dit tegen te gaan.

Groen-blauwe waarden voor de stad Zorg over het klimaat en de leefbaarheid zijn aanleidingen voor hoge groenambities in de stad. In het derde artikel in een serie van vier wordt een overzicht gegeven van waarden van groen en blauw in de stad.

Online community voor het vergroenen van buurten In de gemeente Amsterdam wordt sinds 2018 het programma 'Groen in de Buurt' uitgevoerd. Het doel is om met een brede betrokkenheid van bewoners, organisaties en ambtenaren de Amsterdamse buurten te vergroenen.

Meer biodiversiteit door tijdelijke natuur in Blauwestad In het oosten van de provincie Groningen ligt gebiedsontwikkelingsproject Blauwestad. Bij bouwgebieden liggen geregeld percelen onbepaalde tijd braak voor de bouw begint. Een mooie kans voor de ontwikkeling van tijdelijke natuur die bijdraagt aan de biodiversiteit.

Wonderwoods in Utrecht is beste mixed use van Europa

Lokale baten maken bos en bomen legitiem

Begin december is Wonderwoods namens de European Property Awards uitgeroepen tot beste Mixed Use-project van Nederland. Het project bestaat uit de bouw van twee "groene" torens van 105 en 73 meter hoog in de buurt van Utrecht CS.

In de discussie over bos en bomen gaat het vooral over de vastlegging van CO2 en zeer beperkt over de lokale baten. Het zijn echter juist die lokale baten die de aanplant van extra bomen legitimeren in een dichtbevolkt land als Nederland met schaarse ruimte.

Biochar biedt kansen voor bomen in de stedelijke omgeving Terra Nostra heeft na een aantal jaren van testen onderzoeksresultaten verkregen die hoopvol zijn voor het gebruik van biochar als bodemverbeteraar.

Internationaal is de toepassing van deze houtskoolachtige stof al veel langer bekend.

Ambassadeurs leefbare stad: wie zijn ze en wat doen ze?

Sinds enkele jaren biedt Hogeschool Van Hall Larenstein de opleiding tot "Ambassadeur leefbare stad". De bijscholingscursus voor ambtenaren, landschapsontwerpers en hoveniers is ontwikkeld mede op initiatief van NL Greenlabel.

Alleingang (2) Waarom zijn mensen in de kunstwereld zo aardig? De vraag werd opgeworpen door Martha Rosier, en geciteerd door Silvio Lorusso in Entreprecariat (Onomatopee, 2019). Antwoord: omdat die wereld veelal bevolkt wordt door kleine, noodlijdende zelfstandigen die vaste voet aan de grond proberen te krijgen, en wier pr nauw samenhangt met hun werk. En ook doordat we allemaal geacht worden positief te blijven denken, zoals het geloofsartikel van deze ondernemende tijd luidt. Kritiek is vooral welkom indien gericht op een abstracte vijand, zoals het neoliberalisme, het (witte en mannelijke) nationalisme, het (markt) fundamentalisme. In eigen kring houden we het liever constructief gezellig. Het Mondriaan Fonds steunt mondjesmaat 'discours', een bewust vage, internationaal (Frans!) klinkende term, waarbij het maatschappelijke belang van kunst wordt verondersteld, zo niet geëist - het tegendeel van onafhankelijke Intellectuele kritiek, die de eigen uitgangspunten historiseert en relativeert.

In dit tweede nummer met als thema Aleingang staan kunstenaars, galeriehouders, uitgevers, vormgevers en verzamelaars centraal die een eigen pad kozen en niet zozeer strategisch dachten,

eigenwijs waren en zich uitspraken, juist in samenwerkingen of in Institutioneel verband - als er dus werkelijk eens iets veranderd kon worden. In een lang gesprek reconstrueert Gillion Grantsaan zijn oeuvre, dat. mede voortkomt uit zijn weigering de rol van 'de Ander' op zich te nemen in een overwegend witte kunstwereld. Koen Brams schetst het eigengereide parcours van Fernand Spillemaeckers en zijn galerie MTL die onder meer werk verkocht aan de collectioneurs Anton en Annick Herbert. Anton Herbert overleed In december 2021 - Bart Verschaffel schrijft in zijn in memoriam over Herberts radicale manier van verzamelen en musealiseren. Christophe Van Gerrewey tekent de ontwikkeling van de boekenreeks Posture op In een gesprek met de makers. Posture biedt kunstenaars de mogelijkheid om betekenisvol samen te werken, en zo mogelijk, voor even, verlost te raken van de 'eenzaamheid, twijfel en onrust' die het kunstenaarsleven kenmerken. Pamela Hansford en Matthijs Gerber bieden een overzicht van het leven en werk van Theo Schoon in Nederlands-Indië en Nieuw-Zeeland voor en na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Schoon belichaamde een 'ander' modernisme, hield zich bezig met Maori-erfgoed, en werd decennia later culturele toe-eigening verweten. Was hij een einzelgänger, een visionair kunstenaar, een total asshole, of alle drie tegelijk?

Afsluitend buigt Frank Vande Velre zich over de verbijsterende Alleingang die pornoconsumptie behelst en waagt Bini Adamczak een poging de (poly)seksuele economie marxistisch te duiden - weg van de eenzaamheid als gevolg van opgedrongen tweezaamheid, op naar een alternatief voor de romantische partnerrelatie' en haar 'terreur van intimiteit' Daniél Rovers

Daniël Rovers: Als kunstenaar heb je de afgelopen pakweg twintig jaar op veel plekken gewerkt. eerst in Amsterdam. later onder meer in Kopenhagen. In 1991 begon je een opleiding aan de Rietveld Academie.

Hoe kwam je daar terecht?

Gillion Grantsaan: Na de grafische MTS in Amsterdam-Sloterdijk. in mijn laatste jaar omgedoopt tot het Grafisch Lyceum, heb ik kort voor een grafisch bureau gewerkt, en daarna ben ik gaan reizen, naar Brazilié, Nicaragua, Costa Rica. Guyana, Suriname en Ghana. Ik wilde fotograaf worden. een soort Magnumfotograaf. en de wereld rondtrekken met mijn camera om alle onrechtvaardigheden vast te leggen. Dat was dus eerder een journalistieke droom. Mijn ouders hadden hoger onderwijs gevolgd. en mijn broer en zus studeerden. Als jonge zwarte man had ik niet de angst dat een studie niet voor mij - voor onus- was weggelegd. Maar ik ontdekte wel pas laat dat er zoiets als een kunstacademie bestond. Amsterdam was toen echt het ceutrum van mijn wereld. dus logisch dat ik voor de Rietveld koos. Opeens moest ik werk produceren.

D.R.: Je moest een portfolio voorleggen.

G.G.: Ik kwam met abstracte foto's uit Rio en Belo Horizonte eu Recife. Ik was er vrij fanatiek mee bezig. Ik had mijn keukentje omgebouwd tot donkere kamer. Die vier jaar grafisch onderwijs. wat ik op zich niet zo interessant had gevonden, bleek toch een kader te bieden, of in ieder geval duidelijk te maken: zo wil ik het doen. Maar ik geloof niet dat ze op de Rietveld erg onder de iudruk waren.

D.R.: Had je fotografen als voorbeeld?

G.G.: Ik ging naar de bibliotheek om fotoboeken in te kijken, vooral van fotografen die sociaal-maatschappelijke problemen zichtbaar maakten. Ik herinner me boeken van Sebastiäo Salgado en Alfred Stieglitz,

maar ik kan niet zeggen dat zij 'voorbeelden' werden.

D.R.: Hoe luidde het commentaar op wat je liet zien?

G.G.: Ik toonde niet alleen foto's, maar ook tekeningen eu pogingen tot schilderen. Ik zei dat ik fotografie wilde doen. maar ze tieten merken niet zo zeker te weten of ik een fotograaf was. Ik kwam terecht in de afdeling Voorheen Audiovisueel. een heel vrije richting. Het fotograferen hield ik vol, in mijn hoofd was ik alweer op weg naar Nicaragua! Ondertussen bleef de kritiek hetzelfde: ik maakte foto's, zo was de teneur, maar ik was geen fotograaf. Dat klopte: de foto's die ik maakte waren technisch weinig hoogstaand. En wat ik zelf het interessantst vond, was het bewerken van die negatieven in de donkere kamer.

D.R.: De overstap van het middelbaar beroepsonderwijs naar een kunstacademie is bijzonder. Er zullen je dingen opgevallen zijn die volkomen anders waren. Wat viel je op aan de Rietveld?

G.G.: Het was best wit. Ik werd omringd door mensen die weinig van mijn achtergrond wisten de kennis over Suriname was en is in Nederland over het algemeen oppervlakkig. Er waren wel zwarte studenten, zoals Remy Jungerman., Michael Tedja eu de zussen Natasja en Iris Kensmil, maar die zaten bij verschillende vakken en soms iu een ander jaar. Remy volgde beeldhouwen, en de Kensmils zaten bij schilderen. Er was geen kritische massa. Het hele kader was sowieso liberaal-meritocratisch: je moest talent hebben. hard werken en aan de maatstaven voldoen, dat wil zeggen aan de witte mannelijke norm.

D.R.: Wat was de conclusie van je docenten na dat eerste jaar?

G.G.: Ik moest het eerste jaar overdoen. ik had te weinig progressie getoond. Bij toeval

boorde ik in de kantine een docent zeggen dat hij dacht dat ik niet helemaal begreep wat kunst was. En ik dacht: waar slaat dat nu op? Er sprak zo weinig vertrouwen uit.

Misschien neem je zulke dingen persoonlijker op als je jong bent. Achteraf gezien was dat extra jaar goed voor me. Ik kreeg de kans om dingen uit te proberen. De kritiek die ze meegaven. zou de komende vier jaar aanhouden: dat het te weinig specifiek werd, dat mijn werk alle kanten uitwaaierde.

D.R.: Tegelijk biedt een kunstacademie. als het goed is. ook een theoretische basis. Wat blijft je bij van het curriculum?

G.G.: Kunstfilosofie eu kunstkritiek. We hadden een bevlogen docent. Bert Taken, die legde uit wat kunst voor de filosofie had betekend. iu plaats van andersom. Altijd stelde hij de vraag wat een oeuvre waard was. ongeacht de reputatie van een kunstenaar of diens 'waarde' op de markt. Nu zou je zeggen 'logisch', maar dat was toen een eyeopener. Voor hem ging het om de vraag of iemand een taal had ontwikkeld. Dat was het hoogst haalbare, dat ging verder dan zomaar wat vormpjes uitproberen. Roy Liechtenstein vond hij om die reden interessanter dan Andy Warhol. Of neem David Hammons, die net als Warhol heel beroemd was en bovendien, een revelatie voor mij, zwart bleek te zijn. Ook zijn oeuvre kou je, los van wat iedereen zei. op waarde schatten. Over zijn vroege werk, geïnspireerd door popart, was iedereen laaiend enthousiast, terwijl ik zijn latere werk beter vond.

D.R.: Hammons- een zwarte kunstenaar die tot de Amerikaanse eu dus de Europese canon doordrong- was een voorbeeld.

G.G.: Belangrijker is mijn ontdekking van feministische literatuur en kunst. Ik herinner me een boek waarin een feministische kijk op Karl Marx werd geboden. De basale vraag luidde: weike rol hadden vrouwen
