Tra i giganti di cartapesta
Amongst the papier-mâché giants

OGNI ANNO, NELLE SAPIENTI MANI DEI MAESTRI CARTAPESTAI, GESSO, FARINA, COLLA E COLORI SI TRASFORMANO IN MASTODONTICHE OPERE D’ARTE CHE SFILANO PER LE STRADE DELLA CITTÀ. SONO I CARRI ALLEGORICI, CHE IN PUGLIA SONO PROTAGONISTI DEL CARNEVALE PIÙ ANTICO D’EUROPA, QUELLO DI PUTIGNANO. E HANNO PORTATO ALLA RIBALTA UN GIOVANE E PLURIPREMIATO MAESTRO: DENI BIANCO
Every year, the expert hands of papier-mâché masters transform plaster, flour, glue and paint into mammoth works of art that parade through the streets of the city of Putignano. These Puglian floats are the protagonists of the oldest carnival in Europe. And they bring to light the talents of a young and award-winning master: Deni Bianco.
Gli abiti sfavillanti di chi vuole essere principe o principessa per un giorno; le parrucche colorate e i nasi da clown; i travestimenti mostruosi e quelli dei personaggi più amati dei cartoni
animati; il profumo che si diffonde per le strade, mentre le vetrine di pasticcerie si riempiono di “chiacchiere”, i dolci tipici carnascialeschi; le voci dei bambini festanti che corrono lanciando coriandoli; gli occhi che brillano davanti ai maestosi carri di Carnevale.
Tutto questo, e non solo, è il Carnevale di Putignano reso magico dagli artisti artigiani della cartapesta putignanese, i Maestri Cartapestai che con i piedi fermi nella tradizione, e lo sguardo sempre rivolto all’attualità, con carta, colla, colori, movimenti e fantasia ogni anno danno vita ai giganti di cartapesta del Carnevale: vere e proprie opere d’arte che prendono vita, sfilando per le strade della città, incantando grandi e piccini.
L’elemento principale per la produzione dei carri è la carta, in particolare quella dei quotidiani: ideale per la sua leggerezza e porosità, viene raccolta per mesi in paese, tutti prendono parte a questo rito collettivo, e lasciata macerare in una soluzione di acqua e farina, che funge da colla e che servirà a ricoprire il calco in gesso (precedentemente rivestito di olio, utile per favorire un agevole distacco una volta asciugata). È in questo momento che il manufatto di cartapesta viene quindi rivestito di carta cemento per conferirgli maggiore resistenza e tenuta. L’ultima fase, delicatissima, è dedicata alla colorazione della sagoma.

The sparkling outfits of those who want to be a prince or princess for a day; the colourful wigs and the clown noses; the costumes of monsters as well as the most
beloved cartoon characters; the sweet scent that spreads through the streets, when the windows of pastry shops are filled with “chiacchiere”, a typical carnival treat of sugary fried dough; the cheers of children celebrating and throwing confetti as they run around. Eyes that sparkle with wonder as they gaze upon the majestic carnival floats.
All of this, and more, is what makes up the Putignano Carnival, which is rendered magical by the Putignanese papier-mâché artisans, the Masters. Even though these experts firmly follow traditional ways, they keep a close eye on current affairs for inspiration and every year armed with paper, glue, and paint combined with motion and fantasy they bring to life The Carnival of Papier-mâché Giants. These are true works of art that come to life, and parade through the streets of the city, mesmerising both the young and the old.
The most important thing needed for making the floats is paper, in particular newspapers. They are ideal because they are light and porous. Paper is collected in the village for many months beforehand and everyone takes part in this community ritual. It is then left to soak in a solution of water and flour, which acts as a type of glue and is also used at a later stage to cover the plaster mould (in the past, oil was used which made the separation part very easy). Next, the papier-mâché creation is covered with papercrete to give it greater resistance and hold. The last phase requires a very delicate hand as it involves painting the piece.

A Putignano l’arte della cartapesta ha origini antichissime, si tramanda
di padre in figlio o, come nel caso di Deni Bianco, Mastro Cartapestaio di nuova generazione, lo senti scorrere nel DNA. Entrando nel suo capannone, l’accoglienza è nelle mani dei pupi in cartapesta di qualche edizione passata che ti guardano con sospetto dall’alto, l’odore di colla invade i sensi e si fa presto a restare incantati alla vista di pennelli colorati, ritagli di carta qua e là, pile e pile di quotidiani passati, scintille di saldatura, anime in ferro e sculture in argilla fresca.
“Se solo potessi farlo anch’io” la storia di Deni Bianco, inizia così. Lo sguardo innocente e onirico di un bambino è diventato ben presto lo sguardo attento e scrupoloso di un maestro della cartapesta, dalla forte vocazione sociale, artistica e partecipativa.
In Putignano, the art of papier-mâché making has very ancient origins. It is a skill which has been handed down from father
to son or, as in the case of Deni Bianco, the papier-mâché Master of a new generation, a skill that is simply in their DNA. Entering his workspace, you are greeted by papiermâché puppets from past carnivals which look at you suspiciously from above and the smell of glue invades your senses. You can’t help but be mesmerised by the sight of coloured paintbrushes, small strips of paper here and there, piles and piles of old newspapers, sparks flying from welding tools, the puppets’ iron cores and fresh clay sculptures.
"If only I could do that too". That is how the story of Deni Bianco begins. The innocent and dreamlike gaze of a child would soon become the attentive and scrupulous gaze of a papier-mâché expert, with a strong social, artistic and community focus.
A rendere così affascinante il Carnevale per il piccolo Deni, non sono solo le forme e i colori, ma anche la meccanica dei movimenti e le numerose tecniche di lavorazione. Se a soli 12 anni affianca i maestri Cervellera e Polignano e fa il suo ingresso negli hangar “strappando i giornali”, oggi Deni Bianco, uno dei più
giovani e premiati maestri cartapestai, è riuscito a destagionalizzare l’arte della cartapesta, facendo della sua passione un vero e proprio lavoro 365 giorni l’anno.
Una notorietà che lo porterà presto a oltrepassare i limiti regionali, a esprimersi in nuovi ambiti e ad entrare in contatto con tantissime persone. Anche se la vera soddisfazione, per lui, resta lavorare al fianco di grandi professionalità che hanno reso e rendono la Puglia sempre più prestigiosa. Bianco, one of the youngest and most award-winning papier-mâché masters, has succeeded in making papier-mâché an all-year round art and not just for certain seasons, thereby turning his passion into a proper 365 days a year job.
His great reputation will soon result in him working outside Puglia, expressing himself in new environs and coming into contact with many new people. However, true satisfaction for him comes from working alongside great professionals who have made and are making Puglia even more renowned.

A PUTIGNANO NEL 2023 SFILANO LE FIABE. FAIRY TALES WILL BE THE THEME OF PUTIGNANO CARNIVAL 2023
Conosciuto come il Carnevale più lungo d’Europa, per il suo inizio legato alla Festa delle Propaggini, nel giorno di Santo Stefano, il 26 dicembre, da 629 edizioni questa festa popolare regala giornate di sorrisi e divertimento a decine di migliaia di persone che arrivano in Puglia per assistere a una delle maestose e magiche sfilate.
Ogni anno c’è un tema portante su cui lavorano i Maestri Cartapestai per realizzare i loro "Giganti" di cartapesta. Per il 2023 è Fiabe. Antiche o moderne, lunghe o corte, le fiabe da sempre ci aiutano a comprendere meglio il presente e ci conducono alla scoperta di terre lontane e mondi fantastici insegnandoci a non fermarci davanti agli ostacoli, perché un lieto fine è sempre possibile.
Da non perdere, oltre alle sfilate allegoriche (il 4, 12, 19 e 21 febbraio), i riti del "Giovedì" e la Festa dell’Orso (2 febbraio), appuntamento dal carattere magicodivinatorio sulla durata dell'inverno secondo cui se quel giorno piove l'inverno sta finendo, mentre se il tempo è buono l'inverno sarà ancora lungo e l'orso si costruirà il suo pagliaio per affrontare il freddo.
Scopri di più su Carnevalediputignano.it Known as the longest Carnival in Europe, its beginnings are linked to the “Festa delle Propaggini”, which takes place on Boxing Day, 26th December. Ever since it started 629 years ago, this popular festival has brought happiness, fun and laughter to tens of thousands of people who come to Puglia each year to attend one of the majestic and magical parades.
Each year the papier-mâché parade is based on a particular theme. For 2023, the theme is “Fairy Tales”. Ancient or modern, long or short, fairy tales have always helped us to better understand the present and have led us to discover distant lands and amazing worlds. They teach us not to let obstacles stand in our way, because a happy ending is always possible.
In addition to the parades (4th, 12th, 19th and 21st February), the "Thursday" rituals and the “Festa dell’Orso” (Bear Festival) (February 2nd) are events not to be missed. The “Festa dell’Orso” has a magical aspect to it as it foretells the future, in particular the duration of winter. It is said that if it rains that day, winter is coming to an end, but if the weather is good, there is still a long winter ahead and the bear will build its haystack to provide shelter from the cold.

Anche Borgo Egnazia, fortemente legata alle tradizioni del territorio, ha scelto di affidargli la scenografia di numerose opere in cartapesta per molte feste, pubbliche e private. Tra le tante, ricordiamo la Fenice, alta quasi
cinque metri, bruciata in Piazza come rito propiziatorio di purificazione e rinascita, per dare il benvenuto alla
Primavera. Una celebrazione che incanta gli spettatori di tutto il mondo, riuniti attorno al fuoco, alla sacralità dei riti antichi, alla bellezza e alla musica della Festa del Borgo. Quel mondo che Deni attraversa con la sua arte. Un mondo che racconta passato e presente, che forgia gli artisti e gli artigiani del futuro, che appassiona, che arricchisce e crea legami.
Un mondo dove “chi ride, vive di più”. Un mondo di meraviglia o meglio, come dice Deni “un mondo che meraviglia”. to welcome spring. Spectators from all over the world are enchanted by this celebration. They gather around the fire and the sacredness of the ancient rites along with the beauty and music of the “Festa del Borgo” bring them all together as one. Deni’s art brings to life a world that regales tales of the past and of the present, that moulds the artists and craftsmen of the future, that excites, enriches and creates unbreakable bonds.
A world where "he who laughs, lives longer". A world of astonishment or rather, as Deni puts it "a world that astonishes".
