Eldey er 77 metra hár klettadrangur, um 15 kílómetra suðvestan við Reykjanes. Eyin var friðlýst sem friðland árið 1974 en þar er ein af stærstu súlubyggðum jarðar. Eyin er fræg fyrir þær sakir að árið 1844 var síðasti geirfuglinn veginn í henni. Súlan dregur mikið af netadræsum í hreiðrin. Stundum festist súlan í böndunum og drepst. Myndavélabúnaður var fyrst settur í eyna hinn 20. janúar 2008 en verkefnið er samvinnuverkefni Reykjanesbæjar og Hitaveitu Suðurnesja. Sigurður Harðarson hefur hannað hús og myndavélabúnað til að hægt sé að fylgjast með súlunni á eldey.is. Á hverju ári síðan 2008 hefur verið farið til að betrumbæta búnaðinn og núna síðast 13. janúar 2013. Í þeirri heimsókn fannst það sem talið er vera sprengja, en Landhelgisgæslan á enn eftir að rannsaka gripinn. Eldey is a small island with steep cliffs reaching a height of 77 meters and located 15 kilometers southwest off the coast of Reykjanes Peninsula. In 1974, the island was placed under protection, and it is home to one of the world’s largest colonies of the Northern Gannet. Eldey is famous for the fact that the last surviving Great Auk was killed there in 1844. The Northern Gannet uses stray fishing nets to build its nests, and sometimes the bird accidentally gets tangled in the fishing net and is killed. Video equipment was first installed on the island on the 20th of January 2008, a cooperative project between Reykjanesbær and Hitaveita Suðurnesja. Special camera equipment, designed by Sigurður Harðarson, allows an observation of the Northern Gannet on the internet. Since 2008, the equipment has been improved each year, and the latest upgrade was carried out on the 13th of January in 2013. During that visit, an object resembling a bomb was discovered; however, the Icelandic Coast Guard has yet to properly analyze the object. Egill Aðalsteinsson
