Meet the Malhotras: Through Strength and Kindness, We Grow Together
By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010

This month, Blackhawk Living is thrilled to introduce the Malhotra family—Samta (Sam), Akshiv, and their two daughters, Veera (9) and Maya (4)—a joyful, active, and multigenerational household with deep roots in the Blackhawk community.
A Connection Sparked in the Library
Samta and Akshiv’s story began halfway around the world in the library of a medical college in Bombay. Samta, laser-focused on exam prep, happened upon a studious classmate—Akshiv—whose notes she nervously asked to borrow. That brief interaction led to daily visits, long walks, countless cups of coffee, and the kind of connection that only deepens over time.
After years of friendship turned into romance, Akshiv moved to Syracuse, NY to begin his residency in internal medicine. Ready to start their lives together, they were married
in a “big fat Indian wedding” in New Delhi before Samta joined him in the U.S.
From Blackhawk to Bombay… and Back Again
Though born in Orange County, Samta moved to Blackhawk in the 4th grade and attended local schools—including Tassajara Hills Elementary, Diablo Vista Middle School and Monte Vista High School—before heading to India to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor. That journey led her to meet Akshiv, who was born and raised in New Delhi.
The couple eventually moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where Akshiv completed his fellowship in Hematology-Oncology at the University of Cincinnati, and where their first daughter, Veera, was born. But when it came time to settle down and raise their family, there was no question—Samta knew she wanted to return to the supportive, tightknit Blackhawk community she called home.
Now back in her childhood house on Silver Birch Lane, Samta is raising Veera and Maya surrounded by her parents, brother, uncle, aunt, and cousins— all within minutes of one another. “We have dinner with my parents almost every night,” she shares. “Our girls are being raised with constant love, support, and family presence. That’s something we feel incredibly lucky to have.”
Driven by Purpose and Passion
Akshiv, a physician at UCSF specializing in gastrointestinal oncology, discovered his calling early. Inspired by both his parents—who are also doctors—and his grandmother’s battle with cancer, he pursued a career where compassion and cuttingedge science intersect. He describes his work as both intellectually challenging and deeply human, often forming lasting bonds with the patients and families he supports.
He also serves on the advisory board of EazeBio, a Precision Health startup advancing biomarker-based
diagnostics and care. His dedication to improving lives extends far beyond the clinic.
Family Life: Competitive, Curious, and Always Moving
Whether it’s hiking Half Dome, training for a half marathon, or battling it out in Settlers of Catan, the Malhotras know how to make life fun. Tennis, swimming, Bollywood dance, board games, and music are all major parts of their family rhythm. They attend concerts together (recent favorites include Diljit Dosanjh and ADE in Amsterdam), frequent Bay Area museums and performances, and travel every Christmas morning to find sunshine and surf.
Veera is a bundle of talent and curiosity—she’s a proud member of the HOX swim team, Girl Scouts, a Bollywood dance troupe, and takes tennis lessons locally. She’s also a budding scientist and avid reader with a love for art.
Maya is blossoming in preschool at Autumn Creek Learning Center, taking karate, and learning to swim at All-Star Swim. Samta jokes that while Maya may be shy, she holds her own during heated board game nights.
Rooted in Community
Returning to Blackhawk was about more than nostalgia for Samta—it was about legacy. “This is where I was raised, and I wanted my daughters to have the same sense of community and belonging I had growing up,” she says.
Neighbors have become extended family, with familiar faces from Samta’s babysitting days still living on the street, and newer neighbors becoming trusted babysitters and tutors. “Everyone here is kind, generous, and willing to help,” she adds. “It really is a village.”
A Legacy of Connection
With three generations nearby, the Malhotras represent the heart of Blackhawk—deeply rooted, family-first, and full of warmth. Whether gathering for nightly dinners, cheering each other on at school performances, or chasing goals from the personal to the professional, the Malhotras live their motto daily: Through strength and kindness, we grow together.
We’re honored to share their story with the community they so lovingly call home.

Niner’s News
By Fran Davis
The Niner’s held their annual Member-Guest Tournament on July 30th & 31st. This year’s theme was “Let’s Flamingo,” and foursomes planned their outfits and went all out with their best flamingo inspired attire.
The two day event kicked off on Wednesday evening with a lively putting contest where everyone gathered in a circle and on the count of three, putted their balls toward the hole. With over 60 golf balls in play, the excitement was high to see whose ball made it in!
Congratulations to Brenda McNabb who took home the win with a solo victory.
After the putting contest, the ladies headed out for a four-person scramble. Nine groups started on the front nine, and 8 groups started on the back nine. The evening concluded with cocktails, appetizers and the always popular “Putt for Wine” challenge - hit the wine bottle and you win a bottle of wine!
Day two began with a delicious buffet breakfast, team foursome photos, raffle items and a silent auction. Adding to the fun, husbands served as caddies with each foursome having a helpful guide to
offer hints and suggestions throughout the day. The format was called “cha-cha-cha” with the best net ball recorded on a “cha” hole, the two best net scores were counted on a “cha-cha” hole and on a “chacha-cha” hole the three best net scores were recorded.
Both days also featured cocktail stations out on the course, perfect spots to pause, refresh and enjoy a nice drink with friends.

Rice Pudding
By Parisa Z. Ambwani, Resident since 1983
Serves 14
Ingredients:
• 1 cup of Jasmine rice, soak in fresh water for 1 hour
• 7 cups plus 1 cup extra boiling water
• ¼ teaspoon sea salt
• 1 ½ cup turbinado sugar
• ½ teaspoon saffron powder (dissolve saffron powder in 2 tablespoons water to make saffron water)
• ¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons rose water
• ½ cup clarified butter, divided
• ½ cup slivered almonds (soak almonds for 10 minutes, and drain water)
Garnish: 2 tablespoons each (cinnamon powder, dried culinary rose petals, almond slivered and chopped pistachio.
In a large stock pot, add drained rice, 7 cups boiling water and salt. Bring content to boil and gently stir with a wooden spoon for a few times the rice can cook evenly.
Once the rice mixture has come to boil, reduce the heat to gentle heat and continue cooking for 40-45 minutes until rice becomes tender (to test the rice for its tenderness, gently squeeze one grain between the thumb and index finger, it should fall apart with sticky texture). Stir
occasionally and remove any foam from the top (at this point you may add 1 extra boiling of water into the rice if needed).
Gradually stir in the remaining ingredients (sugar, saffron water, rose water, ¼ cup clarified butter and slivered almonds.) Turn the heat down to low simmering and continue to cook for 25-30 more minutes until done.
Turn off the heat. Cover the pot and let it stay in the covered pot for a few minutes. Transfer rice pudding into a serving dish or individual serving cups and let it completely cool. Garnish with cinnamon, rose petals, almond slivers and pistachio. Enjoy.

HOX Summer Wrap-Up: A Season of Spirit, Speed, and Gratitude
By Stacie Mihalik
As the sun sets on another unforgettable HOX summer season, it’s clear this team is about more than fast times—it’s about family, fun, and fierce team spirit.
Spirit Week brought the energy with themed activities after every practice. From Spirit Nails Monday to Car Paint Thursday, swimmers proudly showed off their HOX pride. The week wrapped up with our beloved Fast Water Friday, a tradition that had the pool buzzing with excitement (and a few butterflies).
It was also Coaches Appreciation Week, and HOX families showed up big. Each day, thank you notes, sweet treats, and surprise coffee runs reminded our coaches just how much they’re appreciated. Their dedication and heart are the fuel behind this incredible team.
The Last Chance Meet gave more than 750 swimmers a final opportunity to sharpen their times before championship season.
With the Kona Shaved Ice truck, airbrush tattoos, and some seriously fierce races, it was a perfect combo of fun and focus.
Our youngest swimmers closed out their season with the heartwarming mini-HOX graduation, where each swimmer completed a lap in meet-like conditions. Afterwards, families joined together for the traditional Hike to the Hawk, an annual rite of passage for all HOX.
One of the season’s biggest highlights was the 2025 Valley Swim Association (VSA) League Championship Meet. This threeday event brought together nearly 2,000 swimmers from across the league, competing in 84 events. Friday’s session was hosted at Blackhawk Country Club, with Saturday and Sunday action continuing at Dougherty Valley High School. As is tradition at VSA, Coach Sean poured a jug of HOX pool water into the away pool to bring home-spirit luck to the team. The competition was ferocious, the relays were electric, and the HOX spirit was in full force.
We wrapped the season with our End-of-Season Awards Ceremony, recognizing achievements big and small—from record-breakers to spirit boosters—and then sent our qualifiers off to the County Meet, the final competition of the summer for many and the ultimate chance to leave it all in the pool.
From painted nails to personal bests, thank-you notes to championship races, this season was packed with memories, milestones, and a whole lot of heart.
Go HOX!

Blackhawk Women’s Golf Association (BWGA)
By Stephanie S. Newby
BWGA Annual Classic Invitational
The big event of the year at Blackhawk Women’s Golf Association is the Annual Classic Invitational. It is held over two and a half days in June. This year the theme of Music permeated all things throughout the event - from golf balls, golf gear & costumes worn by players, to a rock ‘n roll themed photo booth, and entertainment by Impulse a Cappella. The karaoke that followed rocked the room! As for the decorations, exquisite table center pieces featured vinyls and record covers, bathrooms were be-decked with themed balloons and images, and musical notes and clefs appeared on cookies and other food items.
Players come every year from around the Bay Area and across the country to participate in this prestigious event. We even have a diehard who travelled across the Pacific for this one! 160 players with handicaps ranging from 0 to 36 were grouped into four flights. This provided a competitive field and opportunities for victory across the spectrum.

Shasta in a Weekend: Where Heaven & Earth Meet
By Sonia Lamba, Resident since 2015 | Images by Sonia Lamba
This August, we traded our usual routine for a weekend in the shadow of Mount Shasta’s snow-dusted peaks. Burney Falls greeted us first—not just from the overlook, but from the base, after a short hike down that wrapped us in cool mist and the roar of its 129-foot cascade. Hedge Creek Falls felt like a secret—just a quick walk off the road, with a path slipping behind the waterfall’s curtain. Higher up, Bunny Flat opened into sweeping alpine views, where late-summer wildflowers—lupine, Indian paintbrush, and golden asters—dotted the meadows in soft bursts of color. Downtown Shasta carried a slower rhythm—shops scented with incense, shelves lined with crystals and wands, and souvenirs that felt more like talismans than trinkets. We lingered longest at Soul Connections, our favorite stop, where every corner felt like a blend of art, energy, and mountain spirit.
Between stops, we visited the Headwaters at the base of the mountain, where crystal-clear spring water bubbled up from the earth. Locals filled jugs while we cupped our hands for a sip— cold, pure, and tasting of the mountain itself. Our days found an easy flow—time by Siskiyou Lake and an afternoon at the Mount Shasta Resort, where the kids enjoyed a round of golf while we soaked in the views, joined by a few surprise visitors: deer grazing calmly on the course.
Before heading home, we wandered the Gateway Peace Garden— prayer flags swaying, sculptures tucked into the grass, and winding paths that seemed made for unhurried steps. Beneath one tree, the serene figure of Quan Yin stood under a canopy of prayer flags, surrounded by mementos left by visitors—a quiet gathering of wishes, gratitude, and remembrance. In just a couple of days, Shasta gave us waterfalls, trails, wildflowers, and family moments that felt like they belonged to a longer trip.

Bethpage Black – A Golfer’s Gauntlet, Ready for the Ryder Cup
By Chuck Fox, Owner, Quintessential Golf, Resident since 2012
You don’t casually stroll onto Bethpage Black. You earn your day here—whether that’s by navigating the famously competitive online reservation system or, in my case, rolling up at 6am like a pilgrim on a sacred journey. In late May, luck was with me: a single spot at 7:30 am.
On the opening tee, the tone is set:
WARNING – The Black Course is An Extremely Difficult Course Which We Recommend Only for Highly Skilled Golfers.
It’s truth, delivered without sugarcoating, as only New Yorkers can. The course is owned and operated by the New York City Parks Department, part of the sprawling Bethpage State Park golf complex that boasts five courses. But the Black is the crown jewel—a municipal track in name only, its conditioning rivaling that of private clubs.
If you follow championship golf, you know the Black’s résumé. It hosted the 2002 and 2009 U.S. Opens. It staged the 2019 PGA Championship and, come September 2025, the Ryder Cup will arrive.
One of the course’s most traditional quirks: golf carts are prohibited. Walking is mandatory, though pushcarts are available. Even with one, you’ll feel the Black’s rolling terrain in your legs by the back nine. It’s a proper, physical round of golf—no shortcuts, no easy rides.
The conditioning is impeccable. Fairways are lush and tightly mown, greens roll true, and tees are manicured to perfection.
The Rough Reality
Standing on the first tee, you’re immediately met with a harrowing visual - narrow swath of perfectly straight fairway surrounded by thick dark green rough.
The Black’s defining defense is this rough: thick, penal, and relentless. It doesn’t just grab your ball—it swallows it whole, demanding a heroic recovery or a humble pitch-out. A miss off the tee here isn’t just an inconvenience; it’s a 0.5 to full stroke lost, minimum.
Small Greens
Combine that with narrow fairways bordered by mature trees, and driving becomes a high-pressure exercise in precision. You don’t simply “play” the Black; you survive it. Every tee shot demands commitment, and every decision feels weighted with consequence.
The greens at Bethpage Black are small to medium in size—nothing overly undulating, but their compact nature means approaches need to be accurate. The subtle breaks are enough to punish lazy reads, and with the Black’s firm conditions, holding a green from the rough can feel like threading a needle with a garden hose.
Approaches from the fairway are rewarded, often with birdie chances that tempt you into believing the Black is softening. It isn’t. The moment you relax, the rough or a strategically placed bunker will remind you exactly where you are.
From the White tees, the course still plays like a championship test. I managed to keep my drives mostly in the short grass, and when I did find the rough, I took my medicine. The fairways rewarded me with clear looks at pins, and the greens held just enough to allow controlled approaches.
By the time I walked up 18, legs heavy from the hills and mind sharpened by 17 holes of decision-making, I knew I had played well. An up-and-down for par capped off an 80—no small feat for a nonresident who just hours earlier had been praying for a tee time in the parking lot.
The Verdict
Bethpage Black is golf without pretense. It’s a municipal course where your greens fee buys you a shot at the same challenge faced by Tiger Woods, Brooks Koepka, and soon, the Ryder Cup elite. The layout is fair but uncompromising, the walk is grueling but satisfying, and the sense of accomplishment is unmatched.
If you’re a skilled player looking for a true test—and you don’t mind earning it on foot—Bethpage Black belongs on your bucket list. Just remember: the sign at the first tee isn’t there for decoration.
A source of golf travel inspiration, Quintessential Golf online magazine spotlights the most spectacular, enduring and scenic courses, resorts and golf adventures. Written from a players point-of-view, articles include magnificent high-resolution course images. Engines Roared for a Cause at 250+ Car Show Benefiting A Brighter Day
By Celeste Altus, Photos by Celeste Altus
Blackhawk Plaza came alive in July as more than 250 gleaming vehicles—classics, customs, and jaw-dropping exotics—rolled in for a car show with heart. The event wasn’t just about chrome and horsepower; it raised funds and awareness for A Brighter Day, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting teen mental health and suicide prevention. From the deep rumble of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle with a vintage sidecar to the sleek, futuristic lines of a Lamborghini, the show offered something for every enthusiast. A rare Lotus Elite drew plenty of double-takes, while an AMG-Mercedes Benz exuded high-performance elegance.
Families strolled between rows of polished hoods and open trunks, snapping photos and chatting with proud owners. The air buzzed with the sound of engines revving. Those who attended knew their presence was helping a teen find hope and support.

By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990, Photo by MJ McColgan
The 22nd Wheelchair Foundation Drive for Mobility Golf Tournament recently took place at the beautiful Blackhawk Country Club—and once again, it was a tremendous success.
Under sunny skies and warm temperatures, a full field of golfers kicked off the day with a festive Bloody Mary bar and a warm welcome from the beloved Golf Angels. Upon check-in, each participant received a commemorative Piper keychain and a gift certificate to choose select gear from the on-site Travis Mathew pro shop.
The course was buzzing with energy all day, with food, drinks, and games at every hole. Fuddruckers was back by popular demand, serving up their iconic burgers, while the tournament wrapped up with an elegant 19th hole wine reception featuring fine wines. In addition, at the dinner players at each table enjoyed great bottles of red and white wines.
A highlight of the evening was legendary sportscaster Mark Ibanez, who brought excitement and generosity to the live auction. Guests were also treated to the stirring sound of a bagpiper performing on the 18th green just before dinner.
Special thanks go to all the Team Wheelchair members, sponsors, and supporters who made this unforgettable day possible.
Most importantly, the real winners are the individuals around the world who will receive the life-changing gift of mobility. To date, the Wheelchair Foundation has distributed over 1.2 million wheelchairs across the globe— one chair, one life transformed at a time.
We look forward to welcoming everyone back for the 23rd Annual Tournament in 2026!

A MESSAGE FROM THE EAST BAY REGIONAL PARKS: Stay Safe Around Cattle During Calving Season
By Sabrina Landreth, General Manager, East Bay Parks
August to October is calving season for Bay Area cattle ranchers whose animals graze in the Regional Parks. Although calves are very cute, human interaction with them can be a danger to both people and animals. Here are some tips to stay safe around cattle at this time of year:
• Admire calves from a distance but do not approach them.
• Do not get between mother cows and young calves. You could get hurt, and the calf and mother cow will be stressed if you get close.
• Do not worry if you see a calf by itself. The mother cow is usually eating or drinking nearby and will return.
• If you do find a calf by itself, never approach it, take selfies with it, or attempt to touch or relocate it. Those actions can result in injury to you and/or the death of the calf.
• Dogs must be on leash in all areas where livestock are present. Keep your leashed dogs well away from any calves you see.
If you believe a calf is in significant distress or appears to be injured, sick, or dead, please note the location, the color of the animal, the ear tag number, and report it to park staff at (510) 881-1833.
Embrace the Season: Fall Jewelry Trends to Elevate Your Autumn Look
By Steve Padis, Padis Jewelry
As the leaves begin to turn and a crisp breeze ushers in the fall season, it’s the perfect time to refresh your jewelry collection and embrace the season’s trends. Fall jewelry is all about rich textures, warm hues, and versatile pieces that complement the changing weather and your cozy wardrobe. Here’s a guide to the must-have jewelry trends for fall 2025 that will help you shine throughout the season.
Layered Chains and Mixed Metals
Fall is synonymous with deep, earthy colors that mirror the changing landscape. Layering continues to be a popular trend, and fall is the perfect time to experiment with mixing different metals. Combining gold, silver, and rose gold can create a dynamic look that’s both modern and classic. Opt for layered chains of varying lengths and textures to add depth and interest to your outfit. This style works well with both casual and formal attire, making it a versatile choice for the season.
Bold Statement Earrings
Statement earrings are making a strong comeback this fall. Think oversized hoops, geometric shapes, and colorful embellishments. These bold accessories can transform a simple outfit into something special. Whether you’re attending a formal event or simply dressing up for a day out, statement earrings are a fantastic way to add a pop of personality to your look. Look for designs that incorporate fall colors or materials like velvet and enamel for a seasonal touch.
Textured Metals and Unique Finishes
Textured metals are a significant trend for fall, adding a tactile dimension to your jewelry. Look for pieces with hammered finishes, matte textures, or intricate engravings. These designs provide a more rustic and organic feel, complementing the fall season’s aesthetic. Unique finishes can elevate simple pieces and make them stand out.
Personalized and Custom Pieces
Personalized jewelry continues to be popular, allowing you to showcase your individuality. Fall is a great time to invest in custom pieces that reflect your personal style or commemorate special moments. Consider jewelry with initials, birthstones, or meaningful symbols. These personalized items can be cherished for years and make thoughtful gifts for loved ones.
Fall is a season rich in color, texture, and style, and your jewelry should reflect that vibrancy. By incorporating these trends into your collection, you can stay stylish and seasonal while embracing the essence of autumn. Whether you’re drawn to the warmth of earthy tones, the charm of vintage designs, or the boldness of statement pieces, there’s something for everyone this fall. So, get ready to layer, sparkle, and shine as you celebrate the beauty of the season with your jewelry choices
