Dear Neighbors,

The holidays are a time for honoring traditions—tree lightings, gift giving, and yes, pretending to love your aunt’s famous fruitcake. But they’re also about creating new ones. Whether that means signing up for a charity run, hosting friends who’ve become family, or trying something entirely new, the end of the year is when memories turn into traditions.

This month’s cover story, The Art of Love and Tradition: Mehndi Celebration in Blackhawk, beautifully captures that spirit. Charu Srivastava’s annual Mehndi gathering is a celebration of friendship, culture, and love—proof that traditions, old and new, have a way of bringing people together in the most meaningful ways.

On behalf of all of us on the Blackhawk Living Magazine team, I wish you and your loved ones a joyful holiday season filled with warmth, laughter, and a few new traditions of your own.

Warmly,

Megan Scott

The Art of Love and Tradition: Mehndi Celebration in Blackhawk

Once touched by true love, it leaves an indelible imprint on the soul. From Plato’s “pursuit of wholeness” to Rumi’s “bridge between you and everything,” love has long been humanity’s most enduring muse—ever shifting, ever deepening. It’s that same spirit of love that fills Blackhawk each October, when women gather in the backyard of Charu Srivastava for the annual Mehndi celebration—a joyful prelude to Karwa Chauth and Diwali, celebrating devotion, beauty, and togetherness.

The afternoon feels like it’s been brushed with love itself. Music drifts through the air while the sunlight glimmers across silks and mirror work. Laughter rises from children darting across the lawn, and clusters of women sit together under the shade of trees—sharing stories, trading recipes, and remembering the women who came before them.

At the center of it all is the art of Mehndi, brought to life by henna artist Pallavi, whose quiet precision transforms palms and wrists into canvases of tradition. Her designs—spirals, vines, and paisleys—are symbols of grace, continuity, and love. Women lean close to admire one another’s hands, exchanging compliments and snapping photos that seem to catch both beauty and belonging in a single frame.

The celebration is rooted in centuries of history. Mehndi, derived from the leaves of the Lawsonia inermis plant, has adorned the hands of women across cultures—from Ottoman-era rituals to South Asian weddings. It’s one of the Solah Shringar, the sixteen sacred ornaments that complete a woman’s traditional ensemble, connecting her with Goddess Lakshmi, the embodiment of prosperity and beauty. Over time, henna became more than an adornment—it became a blessing, deepening in color with love and intention.

This gathering began five years ago as a small gettogether among friends. Today, it has blossomed into a beloved Blackhawk tradition—a celebration of womanhood, friendship, and the enduring power of love. It’s an event that transcends culture and time, uniting neighbors and friends under one truth: that love expands when shared.

As the sun dips low and the final notes of music fade, what lingers is more than the deep mahogany stain of Mehndi. It’s the feeling of connection—the mark of love that lasts beyond the afternoon. The backyard becomes a living poem, a place where

Megan Scott, Resident since 2010, Photos supplied by VelvetVibes & Molina Gujral

culture and community intertwine, where every swirl of henna tells a story not just of beauty, but of belonging.

In the words of Hafiz, “Even after all this time, the sun never says to the earth, ‘You owe me.’ Look what happens with a love like that—it lights the whole sky.”

And in Blackhawk, under the soft glow of lanterns and laughter, that light burns brightly.

In October, the Niners proudly showed their support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month by wearing pink on the course. Ladies then gathered for a festive lunch with pink-themed games and decor, raising awareness for this important cause.

Funds raised at the member tournament in July were donated to support breast cancer research and education. It was a wonderful show of spirit, unit and compassion from our Niners community!

With Blackhawk closed for aeration, the Niners seized the chance to explore new greens— playing the beautiful new 18 hole course at Poppy Ridge.

Royal Green Salad with Beets and Goat Cheese

Beets are a good source of vitamins, potassium, iron, and dietary fiber. It is great to add roasted beets into our green salads. Roasted baby beets, goat cheese and salad green leaves together bring a delightful salad to the table.

Serves: 4

Dijon Mustard Salad Dressing:

• ¼ cup olive oil

• 1 tablespoon of balsamic vinegar

• 1 tablespoon lemon juice

• 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard

• 1 teaspoon honey

• ¼ teaspoon sea salt

• 1 pinch black pepper, freshly ground

Green Salad:

• ½ pound red-baby beets, trimmed top and the bottom, roasted*, peeled, sliced

• 1 pound baby spinach leaves OR mixed salad baby greens**, washed, pat-dried

• 4 sliced red onions

• 1 tablespoon chopped basil leaves

Garnish:

• 8 ounces crumbled goat cheese

• ¼ cup ruby colored-pomegranate seeds OR pine nuts OR walnuts

Add salad dressing ingredients (olive oil, balsamic vinegar, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, honey, salt and pepper) to blender and blend for 30 seconds.

Place salad ingredients (beets, spinach, onion, and basil leaves) in a serving bowl, toss with dressing and garnish with cheese on top, and pomegranate seeds around the perimeter.

*Roasting Beet (brings out the natural sweetness of beet): In a mixing bowl, toss beets with 1 tablespoon olive oil and salt and pepper. Arrange beets in a single layer in a small shallow baking pan. Cover the pan with aluminum foil and place in preheated 425-degree F. oven. Roast for 25 minutes; uncover and continue to roast for 10 more minutes or until fork-tender. Cool, peel, cut into quarters, and cut each quarter in half.

**Mixed Salad Baby Greens: Simply mix a variety of very young salad green leaves. Salad greens most used include arugula, dandelion, sorrel, etc. Choose ones that are fresh and have no sign of wilting; wash and pat-dry just before serving for ultimate freshness.

Captain’s Cup

The last of our major tournaments for the year - the Captain’s Cup - took place in October. This tournament celebrates our current captain - Karen Dougherty - as well as former captains, many of whom return to Blackhawk to participate. Congratulations to the Overall Net Champion Team: Jan Lind, Karin King and Terri Lawson.

In addition, our captain gets to lead the charge in raising money for a charity of her choice. Karen chose to support local charity White Pony Express. Volunteers at White Pony Express rescue food from local restaurants and supermarkets, and deliver it to those in need. Representing White Pony Express were Mindy Bush, Trish Heaney and Eve Birge.

A few WPE facts:

• 4 million pounds of nutritious surplus food are delivered to vulnerable neighbors every year.

• WPE serves 130,000 individuals annually across Contra Costa County.

• 31 percent of those served are children, nearly 39,000 kids each year.

• 12 senior housing communities receive regular freshfood deliveries.

• WPE supports 110 nonprofit partners with reliable fresh food distributions.

• 17 School Pantries receive deliveries year-round, even during holidays and summer break.

A huge thank you from all at BWGA to our donors and sponsors.

Members of BWGA adopted the theme by dressing as superheroes - a way to align with the “squad” of volunteers and donors who support White Pony Express.

“Communication was outstanding - whether by email, text, or phone, we were always kept informed and never left wondering about the status of our sale... Thanks to Joujou’s dedication and expertise, we found our dream home and were able to close within just a few weeks.”

Primo’s: The Classic Hangout Gets Even Better!

Meet the New Owners

If you live in Blackhawk, chances are you know about Primo’s. It’s been around for over 50 years and is an iconic place in the Danville community where people go to watch sports, hang out with friends, hold end-of-season youth sports celebrations, and enjoy good food and drinks. The new owners are Danville residents Jimmy and Jennifer Jhanda, and they’re making it even better. The owners say they’re keeping the same old Primo’s that everyone knows and loves, but are just adding a few new things to make it even more enjoyable.

New Touches

Primo’s has added some new items to the menu, like the delicious smash burger. They’ve also started some renovations, including the newly remodeled restrooms that have a nice modern lookthere’s even a wall console to play your favorite music!

When you pull up on Diablo Road and Hartz Avenue, you’ll also notice updated Primo’s signage out front as well as inside the restaurant.

Primo’s Is More Than a Pizza Place

People generally think of Primo’s as just a pizza place, but it serves much more than that. The non-pizza items are phenomenal, just like the pizza. For starters, I recommend the cheesy garlic sticks which come with a couple dipping sauces. To get your veggies in and if you want lighter bites, the caesar salad with chicken hit the spot.

Moving on to entrees, the steak street tacos were delicious. The steak is extremely tender, juicy, and flavorful, wrapped in warm tortillas and topped with fresh cilantro. You can also try it with chicken! The tacos are on the regular menu- it’s the perfect size for kids or for lighter bites for an adult.

Another non-pizza item and my personal favorite is the smash burger. It has a perfectly cooked patty with melted cheese, and a great burger sauce, almost like Cane’s sauce. It’s a home run, and I suppose that’s how it gets its name: smash burger. It comes with homemade crispy fries, seasoned with paprika…yum!

We all know kids love dessert. Try the cinna-bites that are like mini churros with a special dipping sauce. It transported me back to Disneyland for a brief moment!

Sports and Entertainment

Primo’s is already known as a great place to watch sports. With around 58 TVs, you can come in and watch your favorite team play — whether that’s football, basketball, hockey, baseball, or soccer. With the FIFA World Cup coming to the USA next year, I took the opportunity to ask Mr. Jhanda about their plans. Primo’s will be creating an awesome atmosphere for watch parties, and I hope to see you all there for some World Cup games! Additionally, they stream the Monte Vista, SRV, and De La Salle away games. That way, parents don’t have to drive hours away to watch their kids play, and they can grab some good food and drinks with a local cheering crowd. It sounds like there are many more exciting plans underway at Primo’s- we’re lucky to have this establishment right here in our town!

Joshua Yosifon is a 7th grader from Danville, CA. He loves to eat, sample new foods, and write food reviews from a kid’s perspective. He is passionate about playing soccer and futsal, reading action books, and collecting soccer cards.

Simple Tips to Extend the Life of Your Christmas Tree

The scent of fresh pine is the hallmark of the holiday season, but selecting and caring for a real Christmas tree requires a little know-how. Follow this guide to ensure your evergreen remains vibrant, fragrant, and safe throughout the festivities.

Smart Selection

Before heading to the lot, measure your space for both height and width, remembering trees look smaller outdoors. Freshness is paramount; test a tree by gently pulling a handful of needles. If many green needles drop or the outer branches snap easily, the tree is too dry—move on. A fresh tree’s needles should be pliable and firmly attached.

Essential Care

Once home, immediately saw off a half-inch to one-inch disk from the base of the trunk. This “fresh cut” removes dried sap and opens up

the water-absorbing tissues. Place the tree in a sturdy stand with a large reservoir and fill it immediately with plain, warm tap water. Do not add sugar, bleach, or other additives; studies show they don’t help. A fresh tree can drink a gallon of water or more in the first 24 hours!

Check the water level daily. By following these simple steps, your tree will stay green, fragrant, and beautiful well past Christmas Day.

These timely tips were provided by the Blackhawk Bloomers Garden Club. If you would like to learn more or become a member of this fantastic organization, please contact Kathy Harkins kdharkins@att.net. Our programs are designed for fun, personal enrichment and a way to meet and grow friendships

Blackhawk Chorus Shares the Spirit of France — at Home and Abroad

This spring, the Blackhawk Chorus brought a touch of Paris to the Tri-Valley with its France-themed concert series, An American in Paris. Audience members enjoyed an unforgettable musical celebration featuring timeless works by Cole Porter, George Gershwin, and Edith Piaf, along with American pop favorites inspired by French culture. The program highlighted the deep and enduring artistic ties between the United States and France — proving that music truly transcends borders. Those performances were just the beginning. In June, the chorus embarked on its first-ever international singing tour to France. The tour opened on the historic shores of Normandy, where members paid tribute to American soldiers who fought in World War II. A moving memorial ceremony at the Normandy American Cemetery provided a powerful reminder of the bravery and sacrifice that forever connect our nations.

From honoring history to sharing harmony, the chorus embraced every moment. Highlights included a collaborative concert with a French choir — a joyful cultural exchange that embodied the universal language of music. As tour organizer and longtime member Jayne

Hegenbart shared, “Music is universal and builds bridges between countries and cultures. This shared performance was a wonderful way to do just that.”

The journey culminated in Paris, where the chorus sang to a standingroom-only audience at the American Cathedral. A Seine River cruise capped off the trip, marking a memorable finale to the Blackhawk Chorus’ summer adventure.

Looking Ahead: A Yuletide Symphony

With the holiday season approaching, the Blackhawk Chorus has been hard at work preparing A Yuletide Symphony, to be performed in collaboration with the Diablo Symphony Orchestra. This year’s main concert (Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church, December 13th, 7:00pm) will feature breathtaking arrangements of carols from around the world — a perfect showcase for the group’s 100 voices and the rich sound of a full symphony orchestra.

Tickets and details are available at BlackhawkChorus.com/events.

Photographing the Northern Lights

“Holy smokes it’s cold out here,” declared the young lady sharing a teepee with her partner and us. Armed with thermoses of coffee, bottles of liquor, and a fire, we traded travel stories while waiting for the main act to begin.

Many want to see and photograph the Northern Lights. Few understand how difficult that might be. Here are some things you will want to think about if you choose to make the attempt.

The most important thing to know is you might not see them. Because of clouds or atmospheric problems, they might not be visible. In six nights, there was only one when they put on a good show. My business partner failed in his effort. It helps if you choose to go around the time of an equinox, when the odds improve a bit.

It’s cold. Unless you are on a cruise where you can dart in and out a door to snap a quick photo, you might spend significant time in temperatures -20 to -35 degrees. We were in a cabin with no electricity or plumbing beside a lodge that had these things, 60 miles east of Yellowknife N.W.T. The smartest thing we did was rent real arctic clothing before jumping on a ski plane to get there. During the day we mushed dog sleds, rode snow mobiles across ice and islands, cross-country skied and fished. Relying on a regular ski jacket, designer pants and long underwear will severely limit you.

The cold manifests in other ways. If you are outside for an extended period, you cannot take your camera or phone directly into a warm room; it is so cold moisture can form inside the body and lens. You must place your equipment in a sealed plastic bag with silica desiccant and leave it outside for a time to dry the internal atmosphere, bring it inside and let it warm, and then remove it from the bag. And, your battery life will be incredibly short, so bring two spares and keep them in pockets as close to your torso as possible.

Go somewhere dark. We have not used well-lit cruise ships or luxury hotels with vans to edges of town, so we can’t opine on them. If you are there just to see and not create magical coffee table books or wall art, they might work quite well.

Finally, remember this is an adventure. Prepare for some discomfort and keep your sense of humor. If you plan a trip and want to learn more, don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

A Season That Shines: From Prague to Blackhawk

Prague’s Christmas markets transform the city into a warm, glittering maze — Old Town Square’s towering tree and nativity, Wenceslas Square’s rows of wooden chalets, and the castle courtyard where choirs echo off ancient walls. You wander with a cup of svařák, the local mulled wine that warms your hands, nibble on sweet trdelník pastries rolled in sugar, and stop for smoky klobása sausages sizzling on open grills. Between carols and bell chimes on Charles Bridge, the air smells of cinnamon and pine; even the cobblestones seem to glow.

Back in Blackhawk, that same market magic shows up in smaller, homier ways — porch lights twinkling along the hills, neighbors sharing cocoa instead of cider, and local tables filled with handmade gifts. We may not have castle courtyards, but we have our own “market lanes” in living rooms, golf clubs, and community corners — simple lights, shared warmth, and gifts made with care. From Prague’s squares to Blackhawk’s streets, December carries the same joy — a season for strolling slow and bringing a little handcrafted wonder home.

Wishing you a season wrapped in light and laughter — from my family to yours, may your days be filled with warmth, wonder, and a little time to pause.

Tobacco Road – Rustic Road In, Polished Golf All Day

I’m a high-70s golfer. Tobacco Road fits that kind of game. You drive the back roads to Sanford, North Carolina, park on gravel, and walk into a small, farmhouse-style clubhouse. It’s simple and warm—wood, old tools on the walls, coffee on. Then you step outside and the contrast hits: the course is spotless. Tight stripes. Flat tees. Clean edges. Greens that roll like they look. It sits out in the Sandhills not far from Pinehurst, but it feels on its own. Remote feel and rustic trim, but the golf surface is dialed.

Mike Strantz built this place out of a tobacco farm and an old sand quarry. You can still see the bones—big sand ridges, wide cuts, love grass on the banks—but it’s all kept neat. Most of that sand is “waste,” not a formal bunker, so you can ground the club and take a practice swing. It looks wild and plays fair if you pick good lines and keep the swing compact.

Even the tees keep it plainspoken: Ripper, Plow, Disc instead of colors. That tells you the mood. There are blind shots. There are fairways that look tighter than they are. Angles matter more than

form a gate in front of the tee. You can send a very straight, low ball through the opening, or try to fly it over to the blind fairway. Into the wind, the ground route works—3-wood that lands before

the throat and runs through. Downwind, the high line is on: pick a window above the mounds, commit, and trust there’s plenty of short grass waiting. Past the gap the layup area widens, but the look stays tight, and the green is guarded by bunkers on the right, so favor the left half and take your two-putt.

Through the middle, the course keeps asking for placement. Par 4s bend around sand and play to platforms that reward the correct side more than the perfect number. Par 5s tease you with room off the tee, then make you think hard about the second. Tight aprons let you choose the tool—putter, bump, or a little loft. The look can be fierce, but the conditioning is so steady you can trust the first hop and the roll. That knocks the noise out of your head.

Hole #18: the finish looks straightforward and isn’t. The tee shot is a carry over a big waste area to a fairway you don’t fully see. Some days you wait for the bell, then swing when you hear the ding. Find the stripe and you’ll have a clear yardage in. The approach crosses a narrow neck pinched by sand before the green opens up. Miss left and a collection area leaves a touchy chip back up the slope. Miss right and you’re pitching from sand with the dunes holding you in. Keep the flight down, land it on your number, and take the steady two-putt.

After the round, the porch is the place. You can see the sand cuts and love grass glowing in late light, with the clubhouse sitting quiet behind you. The talk is about lines, bells, pins, and bounces—not totals. Tobacco Road feels remote and rustic where it meets the world and perfectly kept where the golf lives. For a high-70s golfer who plays the ball first and the course second, it’s a good match. Make a plan, trust it, and walk it in. It makes you want a replay, not a rematch.

East Bay Street Dreams Turns Car Lovers’ Dreams into Reality

Among the multiple car shows up at Blackhawk Plaza, one with a big variety was East Bay Street Dreams. The show was held in September with a huge turnout. This nonprofit car club was founded in 2021 by auto enthusiasts - and Olds Cutlass owners - Jeanette Flagg and Kelly Shaw, and puts on a lively and family-friendly gathering every year at the Plaza. The club bills itself as a place where classic muscle cars and lowriders unite. At this year’s show, some of the autos in attendance were a monstrous, jacked up 2019 GMC Denali truck, classic 1960s Ford Mustangs, and a yacht-like 1960 Buick LeSabre Estate wagon.

Try a Little Painting This Holiday Season!

If you’re looking for a fun, creative project to brighten up the holidays, I’ve got a great suggestion. Recently, I came across an Instagram post by @tinalemac, where she shared her adorable painted wooden gingerbread houses from Michael’s, decorated using Tulip Tube Paint. The finished pieces were simply charming—if you’re curious, head over to her account to check them out!

Inspired, I made a trip to my local Michael’s, only to find that they hadn’t yet unpacked these cute little houses. The store assured me they’ll be available soon, but if you’re eager to get started, you can order them online. Just visit michaels.com and search for the Wood Village A-Frame House by Make Market®—they’re priced at just $4.99 each.

For painting, I recommend using Tulip’s white tube paint. It’s incredibly easy to use and gives a beautiful, festive finish. While my Michael’s was out of stock, I found plenty of the white Tulip paint at Joann Fabrics, which was a happy discovery.

Since my local Michael’s in Dublin, California didn’t have the gingerbread houses yet, I decided to explore some other unfinished wood projects at Joann’s. I picked up a few wooden ornaments and a delightful little birdhouse with whimsical mushroom details. It’s amazing how a little paint can turn these simple pieces into something so special.

So, why not try your hand at painting this season? Whether you’re making gifts, decorations, or just having fun, it’s a wonderful way to embrace the holiday spirit. Happy crafting, and enjoy the season!

Best, Michelle

RSpanish Wine Luncheon at Ken Behring’s Table

ecently, wine appreciators Tony Giovanzana, Mike L. McColgan, David Behring, Jeff Behring, and Steve Carlson gathered for another memorable luncheon at Blackhawk Country Club, seated at founder Ken Behring’s favorite table in the Lakeside main dining room.

This time, organizer Tony Giovanzana invited Michelle Morey, Wine Manager at Draeger’s Market. Michelle has revitalized the store’s Saturday Wine and Cheese Tastings, which she successfully relaunched a year ago after a pandemic pause. The tastings—once a beloved pre-Covid tradition—are now more popular than ever as Draeger’s celebrates its 100th anniversary.

Michelle brings a wealth of wine knowledge and extensive experience from her years in high-end restaurants. Her husband, Steve Morey, is also a master sommelier—making them a true power duo in the world of wine.

For this special luncheon, themed “Wines of Spain,” Michelle and Tony curated eight outstanding selections from Draeger’s extensive international collection. The wines were artfully paired with a four-course menu created by Chef Joseph Salazar and served with professionalism by Kevin.

The meal began with Croquetas de Jamón Serrano—serrano ham, manchego, and pimentos de la vera aioli—paired with Rioja 2022 and Rioja 2020.

The second course featured Olive-Crusted Bacalao, beautifully matched with “Com Tu” Clos Mogador Montsant 2019.

Next came Cordero a la Riojana—seared lamb with white bean and chistorra purée, garlic chips, and Tempranillo jus—paired with Gran Reserva Rioja 2018 and Imperial Gran Reserva Rioja.

The fourth course, Braised Cap de Ruc à la Doñana, presented

tender beef cheek with black garlic, red wine jus, salsify, and charred spring onion confit. This course was paired with Clos Martinet 2021 and Clos Mogador Priorat 2019.

To conclude, Terra de Santiago—an orange blossom crème—was perfectly complemented by Jorge Ordóñez Málaga Victoria.

It was another delightful afternoon of fine food, friendship, and Spanish wines, all enjoyed at Ken Behring’s table overlooking the beautiful 18th green at Blackhawk Country Club. The group looks forward to gathering again in March 2026 for their next luncheon celebration.
