Dear Neighbors,
When it comes to Fourth of July Celebrations, there is no need to leave the gates to celebrate America’s independence in style. The Blackhawk Country Club’s annual Fourth of July Extravaganza is one of my family’s favorite events in the community. We love seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces as they go on the carnival rides and visit with friends, but our favorite part is cuddling up on a blanket to watch the spectacular show in the sky after dark. Our community Independence Day Celebration is just one of the many ways to show your patriotism and celebrate America’s independence.
We are devoted to sharing stories, events and news among our neighbors in this wonderful community. If you have a story, event or news to share, please email me at mscott@bestversionmedia.com.
Wishing your family a very happy Fourth of July Holiday!
Warmly,
Megan Scott

Meet the Russells: Taking Risks,
Building Dreams,
and Always Putting Family First
By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010
Photos courtesy of the Russell family
Nestled in the beautiful Hidden Oaks neighborhood of Blackhawk lives the Russell family: Greg and Eggie, and their three daughters — Davaa (16), Ella (15), and Mia (11). The Russells’ journey is one filled with resilience, love, and a little bit of fate.
Greg and Eggie’s story began in 2005 in San Francisco while both worked in the roofing business. Greg, already established in the industry, found himself negotiating with Eggie, who was managing purchases and firmly driving a hard bargain. What started as professional irritation slowly turned into attraction. After a few business lunches and happy hours, the two officially began dating on September 22, 2006. Only 30 days later, Eggie moved in. Sixty days after that, they were engaged, and by May 12, 2007, they were married at the Lafayette Park Hotel. “When you know, you know,” Greg reflects.
Greg grew up in Pleasanton, graduated from Foothill High School, and later earned his degree from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (1995) and his MBA from the University of Phoenix (1998). Eggie’s path to the Bay Area was far different. Born and raised in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, she immigrated to the U.S. at 18 with just $20 in her pocket and two cardboard boxes of belongings. Eggie’s sister had long believed that the United States offered the best future, and after several family visa attempts, Eggie’s application was approved.
Her arrival in the U.S. was nothing short of an adventure. Due to a miscommunication at the Beijing airport, Eggie’s flight unexpectedly rerouted to Detroit. Thinking she had arrived in San Francisco, Eggie waited for hours at the Detroit airport curb while her brother circled SFO. A kind security guard, noticing her distress, helped her call her family. Eventually, she reached San Francisco, where her brother handed her a Mongolian-toEnglish dictionary and told her to learn English and find a job. Eggie did just that, persevering through more than 30 short-lived jobs due to language barriers. Slowly, she taught herself English by watching television with her dictionary in hand, and today, she speaks and writes English with more fluency than many native speakers.
By the time she met Greg in 2006, Eggie had a full-time job, owned a car, and had built a strong foundation. In 2009, she became a U.S. citizen — a testament to her determination and resilience. “It’s incredible what heart, perseverance and the refusal to give up can result in,” Greg says.
Together, Greg and Eggie combined their professional experience and passion for business. After years of stable careers in roofing distribution, they took a leap of faith and started their own company in 2012. “The worst thing that could happen was we’d fail and go back to our previous jobs,” Greg recalls. That leap turned out to be one of the best decisions they ever made, as the business thrived exponentially for 12 years and sold in June 2024.
Their family grew with the births of their daughters: Davaa, Ella, and Mia. All three girls have been active in Mustang Soccer, with Mia currently playing on the Elite competitive team. Davaa and Ella now attend Monte Vista High School where they play JV softball, and Ella also played freshman soccer this year. Mia is also active in theater with I Can Do That in Danville.
When they’re not attending games or performances, the Russells have always enjoyed rooting for their hometown teams — the Oakland Raiders, Oakland A’s, and Golden State Warriors. Last season, they attended as many A’s games as possible, with Mia even leading the wave at the very last home game, successfully rallying the crowd for three full rounds around the stadium. As lifelong East Bay sports fans, the Russells were saddened by the departure of so many local professional teams. However, their love for baseball inspired them to invest as minority owners in the new Oakland Ballers, a minor league team bringing fresh energy and excitement to the East Bay. “We’re really excited about it and hope this can be part of a resurgence for baseball in Oakland,” Greg shares. “It’s something we believe in and want to help build awareness and support for.”
The Russells also deeply value giving back. They support Sentinels of Freedom, a non-profit helping
wounded veterans transition home with education and career support — a cause close to Greg’s heart as his father was a Marine wounded in Vietnam.
At home, the Russells are kept company by their two beloved dogs: Hopie, their sweet 11-year-old Golden Retriever, and Rosco, their spirited 3-yearold Corgi who “thinks he owns the world.”
The family has lived in Hidden Oaks for the past five years, after previously living in Danville’s Cameo neighborhood for twelve years. They feel blessed to have found a safe, welcoming community where their family can thrive. They love traveling to Maui, spending time at their home in Tahoe, and are
currently working toward visiting every Major League Baseball stadium in the country, having already checked off eight last year alone.
Looking ahead, Greg and Eggie hope to use their experience to support other immigrants trying to navigate the complicated U.S. immigration system. “Information, education, and resources are so needed,” Greg shares. “We’d love to someday help those who are walking the path Eggie once did.”
At the core of everything is their deep commitment to family. “We simply want our kids to be happy and healthy,” Greg says. “Family is everything and worth the effort.”

Market Jitters? Smart Tax Moves Boomers Should Be Thinking About Now
By Terra Malcolm, Partner/Tax Consultant East Bay Accounting
When you’re nearing or in retirement, market dips feel personal — because now you’re not just managing money, you’re protecting your lifestyle. The good news? Even in a shaky market, there are smart tax strategies you can control.
Here are five practical moves to consider:
1. Use Tax-Loss Harvesting
If some investments are down, you might be able to sell them to offset capital gains elsewhere. This strategy can reduce your tax bill and help rebalance your portfolio — without panic-selling.
2. Bunch Your Deductions
With the higher standard deduction, many retirees don’t itemize. But “bunching” charitable gifts or medical expenses into one year can push deductions over the threshold and lead to bigger tax savings. One “bunched” year = bigger write-offs = bigger tax savings.
3. Be Strategic with Retirement Withdrawals
Avoid selling at a loss just to cover expenses. Instead, coordinate withdrawals from taxable, tax-deferred, and tax-free accounts to minimize taxes and avoid income spikes that can raise Medicare premiums. The order you withdraw money matters.
4. Consider Roth Conversions in Down Markets
Lower account values mean smaller tax bills on Roth conversions. Converting in chunks during downturns can offer tax-free withdrawals later. But be sure to plan the timing and amounts.
5. Make Tax Planning a Year-Round Habit
Smart moves aren’t just for tax season. Adjust throughout the year based on income, expenses, or changes in tax laws to reduce what you owe and stretch your savings. Don’t procrastinate!
Bottom line:
You didn’t build your nest egg to lose it to taxes. We help our clients create personalized, flexible tax strategies to stay ahead — even in unpredictable markets.
Let’s talk about your next move.

Where Chrome Meets Community — A Realtor’s Annual Exotic Car Spectacle
By Celeste Altus, Photos by Celeste Altus
Every June, the sleepy cul-de-sacs of our suburban enclave transform into a milliondollar motorcade. Lamborghinis purr next to McLarens, Ferraris wink in the sunlight, and the unmistakable growl of a vintage Shelby Cobra echoes through the otherwise quiet neighborhood. It’s not a scene from Monaco or Beverly Hills—it’s right here in our own backyard, thanks to one woman who sells homes by day and fuels car dreams by weekend.
For the past five years Realtor Cara Gamble has hosted what has become one of the most buzzed-about events in town: the annual Super Car Show. But this isn’t your average showroom floor. Cara doesn’t just line up a few pretty cars in a parking lot—she revs up the entire community.
What began as a small gathering of classic car lovers and luxury vehicle owners in her client network has ballooned into a full-throttle celebration of car culture. Cara personally calls on exotic car clubs from across the Bay Area, wrangling everything from Ferraris and Porsches to Aston Martins and pristine ‘60s Corvettes.
It’s rare to find an event that pulls together so many walks of life around one common joy: the thrill of beautiful machines, designed with obsessive care and roaring with untamed spirit.
Celeste Altus is a freelance writer and content marketer specializing in technology, retail and finance. She lives in Danville, and keeps a car account on Instagram called @Cars_of_Danville.

The Niners held their 2nd annual Putt for Wine event, featuring a uniquely challenging putting green designed to test skill and creativity. Participants competed in a closest-to-the-pin contest, enjoying friendly competition and plenty of laughs.
The grand finale was a crowd favorite: all the ladies gathered in a circle about six feet from the hole, and on the count of three, everyone putted at once to see who could sink their ball. Laughter echoed across the green as balls collided and victory came down to a lucky stroke.
With wine on the line, the stakes were high and the putting fiercecheers to all who joined in the fun.

Making a Splash: Celebrating Coach Michelle and HOX Time Trials
By Stacie Mihalik
If you’ve spent any time at the HOX pool, chances are you’ve been cheered on, high-fived, or encouraged by Coach Michelle McConnell. Known for her enthusiasm, energy, and warm connection with swimmers, Coach Michelle is more than just a coach—she’s a cornerstone of the HOX community.
Born and raised in Concord, California, Coach Michelle found her way to the pool at the age of nine, joining the Ygnacio Wood Swim Team alongside her younger brother. Though her breaststroke needed work in those early days, her persistence paid off. By age 12, she had earned her first county times and would go on to set multiple team records. Her swimming career extended through high school, where she varsity lettered in water polo, basketball, and swimming—an achievement that earned her a spot in the Ygnacio Valley High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
“My goal as a coach is to instill confidence in every swimmer I teach,” she says. It’s a mission rooted in her own experiences growing up, having been shaped by fun, supportive coaches she admired. After coaching her home team for five years postgraduation, she found her way to HOX—bringing not only her
During the school year, Michelle is just as active—she’s the PE teacher at Creekside Elementary and has been educating and inspiring kids for 20 years. Whether in the classroom or on the pool
expertise but also her two children, Mia and William, who now swim for the team as well.
deck, she brings the same high energy, team spirit, and message: “Don’t compare yourself to others. Everyone’s journey is different.”
When asked which famous athlete she’d most like to meet or swim with, she didn’t hesitate: Stephen Curry. “I’m a huge sports fan and love our local teams—the Warriors, Giants, and 49ers,” she said. “But Steph Curry stands out. He just seems like such an incredible, humble person on and off the court.” It’s no surprise that Coach Michelle is drawn to a role model whose work ethic, humility, and leadership mirror her own.
While Coach Michelle helps shape the heart of the team, one of the most exciting ways HOX kicks off the summer season is with Time Trials—a signature event that blends competition with celebration. Time Trials is a HOX only swim meet where every swimmer gets a chance to race in each event, establishing a benchmark time for the season. But HOX transforms this typically straightforward event into something unforgettable.
Before the first splash, the day begins with a festive parade of swimmers organized by age group, complete with spirited signs and team pride. As everyone lines the deck, the national anthem plays—and in true HOX tradition, several HOX swimmers swim the American flag across the pool, a moment that never fails to give goosebumps. The ceremony concludes with a rousing, echoing cheer led by a coach, setting the tone for the meet and the season ahead.
On May 31st, HOX hosted their first home swim meet of the season against Dana Hills— and came away with a win. But beyond the scoreboard, what stood out most was the powerful presence of supportive coaches, parents, and teammates all working together to lift up each swimmer. It’s this community spirit, championed by leaders like Coach Michelle, that makes HOX more than just a team—it makes it a family.
As the season heats up, one thing is certain: with dedicated coaches, time-honored traditions, and a whole lot of heart, the HOX Swim Team is ready to make waves. To learn more about swim programs visit www.hoxswim.com or reach out to Coach Sean directly at seanq@blackhawkcc.org.

Danville’s Fourth of July Parade Turns 50: A Half-Century of Community Spirit and Celebration
By Jen Vanya, Acting Public Information Supervisor
Each summer, the heart of Danville beats a little louder. Streets burst into color, laughter echoes along Hartz Avenue, and more than 40,000 friends, families, and neighbors gather for one of the Bay Area’s most beloved Independence Day traditions: the Kiwanis 4th of July Parade.
This year marks a golden milestone— 50 years of the Kiwanis Club of San Ramon Valley (Kiwanis SRV) organizing and hosting this patriotic spectacle. First launched in 1975 in partnership with the Town of Danville, the event has grown from a small-town celebration into a regional highlight, drawing over 125 parade entries and participants of all ages.
The 2025 parade, presented by Alamo Ace Hardware, promises to be extra special. In honor of the 50th anniversary, the theme is “Celebrating 50 Years of Community Service”—a tribute to the countless hours, volunteers, and community contributions that have shaped the parade and the town itself.
Fittingly, this year’s Grand Marshal is the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano, which is also celebrating its own 50-year legacy of service.
“We’re honored to partner with the Kiwanis Club of San Ramon Valley as Grand Marshal of this year’s 50th annual Kiwanis Danville 4th of July Parade,” says
Caitlin Sly, President and CEO of the Food Bank. “The Kiwanis Club has been a longtime supporter of our mission to lead the fight to end hunger, and we’re proud to celebrate these milestones together.”
From 9 a.m. to noon, the celebration rolls down the familiar route—from San Ramon Valley High School, along Hartz Avenue, to Town and Country Drive. If you’re a local, you know: families reserve prime viewing spots the night before, staking claim to shaded sidewalks and curbside corners with foldout chairs and red-white-and-blue blankets.
The parade itself is a dynamic showcase of Danville’s character. Scout troops lead the procession, followed by marching bands, classic cars, service organizations, youth sports teams, taekwondo demonstrations, cheer squads, and floats from local businesses and neighborhood groups—each waving flags and flashing smiles. Veterans, first responders, and dignitaries march with pride as the community salutes them in gratitude.
For Danville Mayor Renee Morgan, the parade is deeply personal. “I’ve been coming to the parade for almost 40 years, and it has always brought my family and friends together,” she shares. “The 4th of July parade symbolizes the heart of Danville and is a reflection of our camaraderie and commitment to honoring our nation’s independence.”
But beyond the fanfare, the parade also carries a mission. As Kiwanis SRV’s signature fundraiser, proceeds from sponsorships support its Grants Program, benefiting nonprofits across the TriValley. Since 1995, more than $1.15 million in grants has gone to over 120 organizations, funding programs that uplift youth, families, and underserved communities.
As the parade enters its sixth decade, its heartbeat remains the same—bringing people together in joy, unity, and purpose.
So grab your lawn chairs and flags, and come early. This Fourth of July, Danville won’t just celebrate the nation’s birthday—it will celebrate 50 unforgettable years of local pride, civic spirit, and red-whiteand-blue tradition.

Recently, we had the pleasure of dining at Chotto Matte. This new San Francisco restaurant opened on the top of the previous Macy’s Men’s Store at Union Square. It offers great views from its rooftop terrace and an extensive selection of unique and delicious Japanese Peruvian dishes.
Chotto Matte translates “to wait a moment” or “hold on a second”. The concept is deeply integrated in Japanese culture where patience and thoughtfulness are highly valued virtues.
We took our time at this elegant restaurant with views of the “city by the bay” on the top of Macy’s on a sensational crystal-clear day.
You know it is going to be a special experience when you check into the black marble entrance before taking an elevator to the rooftop terrace.
Service is very attentive with an extensive selection of cocktails and wine. We enjoyed a variety of appetizers including calamari,
sushi, and perfect Manhattans made with Angels Envy. We also enjoyed chicken and salmon donburi bowls graced with deep fried finely ground red sweet potatoes garnished on top that made for an impressive presentation. For dessert, we shared a freshly made apple cobbler that was a heavenly ending to a fantastic dining experience.
This restaurant is the 5th in their collection with others in London, Toronto, Saudi Arabia, Miami and more planned.
It is a great addition to San Francisco’s famous Union Square. We would highly recommend it.

Dormie Club – A Purist Escape to North Carolina
By Chuck Fox, Owner, Quintessential Golf, Resident since 2012
WhenI plan golf trips to Pinehurst, my focus typically centers on the ten courses at Pinehurst Resort, along with the area’s iconic standouts like Mid Pines and Pine Needles. Although the Sandhills region boasts more than 30 golf courses, only a select few make Golf Magazine’s Top 100 Courses You Can Play list: Pinehurst No. 2, Pinehurst No. 4, Mid Pines, Pine Needles, Tobacco Road, and Dormie Club. Among them, Dormie Club stands out as a minimalist links-style gem, designed in 2010 by the acclaimed team of Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore —their only creation in North Carolina.
Tucked into the quiet pines of Pinehurst, North Carolina, Dormie Club is a pure golf sanctuary—a minimalist masterpiece from the acclaimed duo of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. For serious players, this course represents golf in its most elemental form: strategic, serene, and stripped of distractions. It’s not about scorecards or souvenirs—it’s about golf as it was meant to be played.
The routing winds gracefully through over 300 acres of rolling sandhills, with over 100 feet of elevation change. Despite the terrain, the course remains walkable, encouraging the oldworld rhythm of the game, step by thoughtful step. The design pays homage to classic Scottish links with firm conditions, wide corridors, and an emphasis on ground game creativity. There are no returning nines here—golf is 18 uninterrupted holes. Midway through, the charming Dormie Canteen offers a quick refuel, while the clubhouse delivers food directly to players out on the course. Complimentary cold bottled water, stashed in rustic wooden boxes, adds a thoughtful touch.
From a competitive player’s standpoint, Dormie Club is both welcoming and punishing in the right ways. The fairways are wide and in impeccable condition—fast, tight Bermuda that plays beautifully for low runners or crisp irons. But don’t mistake width for safety. The sand-based terrain often exposes natural waste areas just off the fairway, punishing any miss with awkward lies, scrub, and wiregrass clumps. The absence of traditional rough means balls can run into these areas quickly. And yes—fire ants were a not-so-welcome surprise.
Bunkering is natural and rugged. Every bunker is technically a waste area—no rakes, no borders, just raw terrain. Players can (and must) drive carts through them. This can lead to less-than-ideal lies due to footprints or unraked divots, especially greenside. But that’s the point—it’s golf unfiltered.
The bentgrass greens are exceptional. With a blend of large, undulating complexes and smaller, crowned targets, they require exacting approach shots and an imaginative short game. Slopes feed into tightly tucked pins and runoffs demand precise pitches,

bump-and-runs, or even putts from well off the green. The greens roll true, but subtle contours and bold undulations make two-putting far from automatic.
Dormie is more than a course—it’s a statement. No 150-yard markers. No pin sheets. No cart paths. Just the game. For purists and players alike, Dormie Club is an immersive, thoughtful experience. As part of the Dormie Network, it’s slated for full privatization. Play it now—before access fades—because once you walk off 18, all you’ll want is to go back to the first tee.
If You Go:
• Course Info - Dormie Club has a regulation eighteen holes links course. Part of the Dormie Network of destination golf clubs.
• Designer - Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore. Their only design in North Carolina.
• Practice Area - Large grass range. No short game area.
• Location - Sandhills area of North Carolina in the town of West End. Ten miles north of the Pinehurst area.
A source of golf travel inspiration, Quintessential Golf online magazine spotlights the most spectacular, enduring and scenic courses, resorts and golf adventures. Written from a players point-of-view, articles include magnificent high-resolution course images. Brought to you by Chuck Fox, single-digit golfer, writer and photographer based in Danville, California, he is fulfilling his passion and dream to play, photograph and share the romance and beauty of golf throughout North America.

Zen Mode: Activated in Sonoma
By Sonia Lamba, Resident since 2015 | Images by Sonia Lamba
Wrapped in spa robes and sun-kissed ease, my day escape began at the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa—where serenity becomes mineral-infused. From grape seed showers and eucalyptus steam rooms to Roman-style thermal pools, every corner invites a deep exhale. The blooming neroli and jasmine whispered full-body reset, while herbal tea in hand and a muscle-melting massage rounded out the White Lotus–worthy (drama-free) afternoon. I even snuck in a few roadside winery photos—because, Sonoma. Dinner and rosé at The Mill sealed the day. 10/10 would spa, dip, and repeat.
Whether it’s a girlfriend getaway like mine or a mother-daughter duo escape, Sonoma offers an easy route to restoration—no matter the season. And back in Blackhawk? I’ve been chasing echoes of that calm in smaller ways—quiet mornings in my backyard sipping tea and jasmine-scented evening strolls. Sonoma stillness, right here at home—a deeper breath between moments. And my favorite: watching sunsets dip behind the Falls Club. It’s not exactly a spa robe and mineral pool—but in the right light (and with the right wine), it comes pretty close. Sonoma may have turned the volume down for an otherwise busy day, but it reminded me: peace isn’t always a getaway. It can be a choice, woven into the everyday.

After a career in finance, I’ve embraced a long-held creative passion—turning moments into visual stories through both images and motion.
Based in scenic Blackhawk, California, I find inspiration both close to home and wherever my travels take me.
I’ve been writing for the magazine since 2017, sharing stories through words and imagery—from Blackhawk to far beyond. I hope you enjoy them, and I always welcome your thoughts or ideas.

Summer Travel JEWELRY CARE
By Steve Padis, Padis Jewelry
Weekend getaways, jaunts to the beach, and full-fledged vacations are perks that pretty much come with the territory during the summer months, so it’s no wonder that summer fashion tips—what to wear, what to pack, what to buy—are at the forefront of our minds right now.
One thing, though, that’s not quite as readily on our radar is the idea of jewelry care, and how the summer months might affect our favorite pieces. Namely, how we can protect our beloved rings, necklaces, and earrings from the season’s elements, and how we can keep them secure while jetting off somewhere sun-filled. At Padis Jewelry, we’ve been helping clients protect and preserve their most treasured pieces for over 50 years. We’re honored to have just been named Best of the Bay 2025 by SF Gate, a recognition that reflects our commitment to excellence, trust, and service in fine jewelry. Whether you’re preparing for a weekend getaway or a dream vacation abroad, our expert team is here to help you keep your jewelry shining bright all season long. Here are some helpful hints to keep in mind while you enjoy the beauty of summer:
1. Sunbathe without your Gems
Sunscreen can coat gemstones and reduce their sparkle by blocking light refraction. To keep your diamonds and colored stones looking their best, leave fine jewelry at home if you’re heading to the beach or the pool for the day. Be sure to clean your pieces regularly throughout the summer. At Padis, we offer complimentary professional cleaning and inspection services to help keep your jewelry in top shape.
2. Organization is key when traveling
When jumbled together, your jewelry doesn’t always get along. A diamond can scratch a pearl, and a bracelet can snag on a necklace—so always pack pieces in individual soft cloth pouches or lined jewelry boxes. If you’re unsure of the best way to store your jewelry on the go, we have great travel cases available at Padis Jewelry boutiques in San Francisco and Napa Valley.
3. Keep it safe
When selecting a hotel, ensure that safe deposit boxes are available. Never leave fine jewelry unattended in a hotel room, rental car, or on a lounge chair—even for a quick dip or a trip to the bar for a margarita. If you’re ever in doubt about travel security for a specific piece, our team is always happy to offer guidance before your trip.
4. Shopping for something new? Do your research
Vacation destinations are often prime shopping spots—but beware. Many stores in tourist hubs prey on travelers with enticing deals that may not be what they seem. If you’re
considering commemorating your trip with a new fine jewelry purchase, be sure to buy from a trusted, established jeweler. At Padis Jewelry, we’re proud to be a family-owned, American Gem Society–certified jeweler with five Bay Area showrooms and a long-standing reputation for integrity and excellence. And with our recent San Francisco Chronicle Best of the Bay 2025 recognition, you can feel confident knowing you’re in the very best hands. If you’re ever unsure about a vacation purchase, feel free to stop by—we’re happy to provide a complimentary second opinion or appraisal.
5. Before you go away, be sure your jewelry is adequately insured If you decide to bring a valuable piece—like your engagement ring, luxury watch, or a family heirloom—make sure it’s properly insured. It’s more affordable than most people think, and essential for peace of mind. Our Padis team can help guide you through the process, connect you with reputable insurers, or provide an up-to-date appraisal if needed.
Your jewelry should bring you joy—not stress—no matter the season. Whether you’re preparing for a summer abroad or staying local with friends and family, our team at Padis Jewelry is here to assist you with all your jewelry care needs. Stop by for a complimentary cleaning, have your settings checked, or let us help you select the perfect travel-safe piece for your adventures ahead.
Wishing you and your loved ones a sparkling, memorable summer!
