Dear Neighbors,
October in Blackhawk means crisp evenings, porch lights, and—this year—robots. While many of us are settling in for fall traditions, two of our own are gearing up for an equally exciting season: Olivia and Caden, Blackhawk residents and seniors at Monte Vista High School, who help lead the school’s award-winning robotics team.
In this month’s cover story, you’ll meet these talented students and step inside the fast-moving world of high school robotics—where design, wiring, coding, and teamwork come together under real deadlines. You’ll hear how Olivia (co-captain) and Caden (electrical lead) balance leadership with late-night problem-solving, mentor younger teammates, and turn setbacks into “aha!” moments. You’ll also learn how the team connects with our community through outreach, workshops, and inspiring the next generation—especially girls in STEM.

Building the Future: Blackhawk
Students Take Robotics to New Heights
By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010
Two local high school seniors are proving that innovation, teamwork, and determination aren’t confined to Silicon Valley tech labs. Olivia and Caden, both Monte Vista High School seniors, are leaders on their school’s robotics team, a program that blends engineering, creativity, and community outreach. Their story is one of inspiration, late nights in the workshop, and the thrill of competing on a global stage.
Getting to Know the Students Behind the Bots
“I’m Olivia, a senior at Monte Vista and co-captain of the robotics team,” she says with a smile that reveals both confidence and enthusiasm. “I started out in an AAUW program encouraging women in STEM, and by freshman year, I was hooked.”
Caden, her teammate and fellow senior, serves as the team’s electrical lead. “I first joined because of my older brother,” he explains. “After attending my first meeting, I was hooked too.”
For both students, what began as curiosity quickly grew into a passion. The robotics program gave them a place not only to learn technical skills, but also to grow as leaders and problem solvers.
About the Team & the Season
The Monte Vista team competes in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), an international challenge involving thousands of teams from around the world. Each year, the challenge changes. This year’s game was inspired by ocean conservation: robots worked to plant “coral” (PVC pipes), clear “algae” (large rubber balls), and score points by placing items into nets and processors—all in just 2 minutes and 15 seconds.
“The first 15 seconds are completely autonomous,” Olivia explains. “No human control at all. Then, student drivers take over for the remaining two minutes.”
Their 2025 robot was a marvel: weighing over 100 pounds, it featured a custom swerve drive system, an elevator mechanism with CNC-cut parts, and sensors that allowed for precise control. “Our bumpers, chassis, and custom parts kept it stable—even at seven feet high,” says Caden, who
wired every motor, sensor, and battery system.
As co-captain, Olivia oversaw more than just the technical side. “I managed deadlines, coordinated with other teams, and worked with our business team on grants and sponsorships. But I also jumped in on the electrical side whenever needed.”
The Learning Curve
If there’s one thing robotics teaches, it’s resilience. Olivia reflects on how the team shaped her:
“Robotics has formed the person I am today. From soldering wires to diagnosing motors in the middle of competition, I learned to think on my feet, lead a team, and build community.”
Caden agrees. “A robotics team is not a oneman show. It’s about deadlines, collaboration, and problem-solving. Every season presents new challenges, and nothing ever goes exactly as planned. That’s where creativity comes in.”
One such challenge came when the team realized their robot was overweight by nearly 20 pounds. After countless late nights and tough decisions, they rebuilt parts with lighter materials, swapped motors, and reworked their arm mechanism. “It was hard to let go of ideas that we loved, but it taught us the importance of adaptability,” Olivia shares.
Caden recalls another hurdle: equipment. “Without a CNC router or 3D printer, we had to rely on outside machining, which slowed us down. It forced us to carefully plan ahead and make every part count.”
Competitions, Community, and Camaraderie
This year, the team competed at the Pinnacles Regional and the San Francisco Regional, and their hard work paid off with recognition including the Rising All Star Award. In 2024, they achieved what had seemed impossible: qualifying for the FIRST World Championships in Houston, where they competed among the top 600 teams worldwide.

“Walking into the World Championships was unforgettable,” Caden recalls. “I’ll never forget seeing a fully autonomous R2D2 robot one team built.”
Olivia lights up remembering the camaraderie. “We’ve had so many fun moments—karaoke in hotel rooms, inside jokes in the workshop, even laughing when we discovered that rookie members taped down uncrimped battery wires. Robotics is stressful, but those moments make it unforgettable.”
Looking Ahead
Both students see robotics shaping their futures.
Caden is committed to pursuing electrical engineering in college, while Olivia says robotics has inspired her to explore engineering, even though she has always been drawn to the humanities. “Nothing compares to the adrenaline of building, fixing, and competing with robots. I never want to give that up.”
When asked what they want the community to know about robotics, Olivia emphasizes the scale. “This isn’t a small hobby. Our 40-person team builds a 115-pound robot and raises $50,000 a year to fund it. We run like a business, and every student has a vital role.”
Caden adds, “It’s as intense as any other sport. The teamwork, the competition, the late nights—it all matters.”
Their advice for younger students?
“Don’t let anyone tell you what you can or can’t do,” says Olivia.
“Prior experience doesn’t matter,” adds Caden. “Anyone can learn.”

A Community of Innovators
For Olivia and Caden, robotics has been more than just a club. It’s been a launching pad for their futures, a community that has taught them resilience, and a place where passion meets teamwork.
“I’ve learned how to lead, how to build, and how to work with people in a way I never imagined,” Olivia says.
“And I’ve found my calling,” Caden concludes.
As Blackhawk neighbors, we can be proud that students like Olivia and Caden are not only representing our community on the global stage but are also inspiring the next generation to dream bigger, build smarter, and work together.

Zestful Appetizer with Split Green Peas
By Parisa Z. Ambwani, Resident since 1983
Dried split green peas are members of the legume family; their edible seeds are rich in protein and soluble dietary fiber.
Serves 8
Ingredients:
• 1 cup dried split peas
• 10 cups of cold water, divided
• 1 teaspoon sea salt OR to taste
• ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
• ¼ teaspoon black pepper, ground
• 3-4 cloves garlic, chopped
• Juice of 1 large lemon
• ¼ cup olive oil
• ½ cup plain yogurt
• 1 cup green peas, blanched quickly and drained
• Garnish: 3 green onion’s (scallions) tips and 3 lemon slices Before cooking split peas, examine, sort and rinse well. Presoak split peas with 6 cups of cold water, refrigerate overnight and drain. In a large saucepan combine drained peas with 4 cups of cold water. Bring to boil, reduce the heat, and simmer slowly for 35-40 minutes or until peas are tender and cooked (stirring a few times during simmering and skimming off any foam that form). Watch carefully so peas do not burn, add a little water if necessary.
Transfer peas into food processor, add salt, turmeric, black pepper, garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, yogurt and blanched green peas. Pulse a few times and run processor for 30 seconds until all ingredients are pureed. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.

HOX Fall Swim Has Begun!
By Stacie Mihalik
As the long summer days fade into autumn, the Blackhawk Swim Team (HOX) continues to make waves with its Fall Swim program, now underway. While summer swim is filled with sunshine, social events, and spirited competition, fall swim plays a different but equally important role—it’s about continuity, development, and keeping the HOX community connected year-round.
Why Fall Swim Matters
• Keeps Skills Sharp: Fall Swim ensures that the hard work and progress from summer don’t slip away. Swimmers maintain their rhythm in the water, refine their technique, and stay confident heading into the next competitive season.
• Builds Endurance & Strength: With a focus on training and consistency, fall practices help swimmers build a solid fitness foundation that benefits them all year long.
• Provides Structure & Balance: As school ramps up, Fall Swim gives athletes a healthy outlet after class—balancing academics with physical activity and reinforcing valuable timemanagement skills.
Summer vs. Fall Swim
• Summer Swim is high-energy, with packed calendars of meets, team events, and outdoor fun.

• Fall Swim, on the other hand, offers a more focused environment. Without the rush of summer competitions, swimmers can dedicate time to skill-building, technique, and

endurance—preparing them for the next phase of their HOX journey.
Both seasons matter, but together they create a full-circle program that strengthens swimmers as athletes and teammates.
A Community Effort
A program like HOX Swim thrives because of the dedication of not just the athletes and coaches, but also the many volunteers who give their time. A special thank you goes to Miki Tsubota, the team’s volunteer photographer. Even though his son Chase is still on the team—competing as a swimmer and serving as one of our coaches—Miki continues to show up with his camera to capture the season for all the swimmers. His generosity and talent provide families with meaningful images that highlight both the action in the pool and the spirit of the HOX community. His photos provide families with a meaningful record of the season. Thank you Miki!
Carrying the Momentum
Fall Swim is more than just an extension of summer—it’s an integral part of the HOX Swim Team experience, keeping swimmers active, motivated, and connected as the seasons change. With committed coaches, supportive families, and volunteers like Mike behind the lens, the HOX community continues to thrive well past the summer months. To learn more about the HOX swim programs visit www.hoxswim.com or contact Coach Sean directly at seanq@ blackhawkcc.org.

Beyond the Postcard: China Through a Traveler’s Lens Through Indigenous Eyes
By Charles Neuenschwander, Blackhawk Resident
Two weeks of travel through Beijing, Xian, Yunnan Provence and Shanghai PRC
“You must understand, Chuck, economically we are capitalists. Socially we remain communists. And that’s not easy to reconcile.”
We look at our guide as the three of us approach the front gate of our Tibetan hosts for the evening. It is not the first time we’ve heard sentiments such as this. During our nearly 10 days in China, multiple guides have shown us life through indigenous eyes and provided us context to Chinese thinking. We learned of generational divides where Mom cannot understand why a 30-something guide prefers to be an entrepreneur rather than wish for Chairman Mao “to provided for us and we did not have to worry about anything.” We heard of collateral fallout from 4-2-1 (4 grandparents, 2 parents and only one child), due to the one child policy. We silently chuckled as we listened to concerns about the “younger generation”, this from a 35-year-old.

Her eyes are anything but timid.
Great-grandma motions Chuck to a low bench by the fire. When we sit down, she gestures with gnarled hands as she speaks. Our guide is missing, but it is okay as we smile and continues.
Dinner is accompanied by yak-butter tea and Baijiu, a Chinese homemade distilled liquor. Chuck shows our young hostess his camera, which breaks down what’s left of her reserve, and she laughs when seeing pictures of friends in the city. Our guide tells them Kathie dances ballet, so a trade is arranged. They will dance for us if Kathie hoofs for them.
And they dress us. With rough-skinned hands the women laughingly wrap and cinch us. Following more pictures, the women perform a line dance that shines with tradition. Kathie joins them while soft Tibetan words are sung. Dad stands to the side watching his family with amusement. Chuck catches the 8-year-old, with huge wide-open eyes and lips set in a firm line, as she stares hard at him through the barrel of his camera lens.
Standing at nearly 11,000 feet in Zhongdian in the Yunnan Provence, we survey the courtyard where in the winter animals are brought from the hills. There is a barn on the ground floor where yak metabolism helps heat the rooms above. Our host for the evening, a 14-year-old girl with timid eyes, escorts us to the second floor, where we enter a large room with beautiful, wood corbels. A wood-burning cooking area with smoke escaping through the ceiling captures our attention while two bare light bulbs hang where we will eat. In the corner is 84-year-old great-grandmother.
Later, we were told something unusual happened tonight. Our hosts never dress guests and great-grandma remains strictly in the background. There’s a message here: you deserve nothing – what you give can determine what you will receive.

When traveling you might find yourself in position to experience something special, but if you want it, you have to put yourself out there; you must be the one to build a platform that supports everybody to open themselves. You become something more than

Bitcoin As An Asset Class
By John J. Gardner, CFP®, CPM®, AIF® Blackhawk Wealth Advisors

Bitcoin is a type of digital currency, known as a cryptocurrency. It was created in 2009. The Bitcoin cryptocurrency operates on a decentralized technology called blockchain, which is a public ledger of all transactions. This means it isn’t controlled by any government or bank, making it a peer-to-peer system for transferring value. People use bitcoin for buying goods and

services, investing, and as a store of value. Its value has fluctuated significantly, like anything else sold, based on market supply and demand. The supply side of the valuation equation is one unique feature of bitcoin. Its supply is limited. Bitcoin has a fixed supply of 21 million coins, which can help preserve its value over time. Over the past 16 years, bitcoin has grown from an unproven idea into a $2.4 trillion asset that is increasingly owned by some of the most respected investors in the world.
In recent years, Bitcoin has emerged as a bona fide institutional asset class. What was once a niche alternative asset owned mostly by retail investors is now broadly held by the largest institutional financial firms around the world. The primary catalyst of broader ownership was the launch of spot bitcoin exchange-traded products in the U.S. in January 2024, which made accessing bitcoin safer, easy, and inexpensive for traditional investors. The transformation has accelerated in part because of the pro-crypto regulatory shift in the U.S. following last year’s presidential election. In January and March 2025, President Trump signed executive orders to make the U.S. the “crypto capital of the world.” The administration supports domestic Bitcoin mining. Trump has publicly stated that he wants “all the remaining Bitcoin to be MADE IN THE USA,” framing it as a national security issue. In July, President Trump signed the GENIUS Act into law, a broad victory for the crypto industry, providing regulatory certainty and creating the first federal framework for the asset class.
As bitcoin makes this transition to a more widely owned asset, there will be greater demand for long-term capital market assumptions. These robust, data-driven estimates of future returns, volatility, and correlations help investors model the role of bitcoin in portfolios. Here are some assumptions and investment perspectives that relate to bitcoin investing.
Capital Gain Assumptions
Return expectations are often expressed in terms of ROI (return on investment) over a period or as a CAGR (compounding annual growth rate), both stated in percentages. Due to the unique supply/
demand dynamics of bitcoin, some analysts are projecting future CAGR ranging from 20% to over 50%—depending on adoption rates, regulatory environments, and macroeconomic factors— over the next 10 years. As should be expected, demand for the cryptocurrency will determine bitcoin’s future value.
Demand
While retail investors led its emergence, institutional investors are likely to maintain the highest demand for bitcoin going forward. The challenge, though, is approximately 95% of all the bitcoin that will ever exist is already owned—primarily by retail investors. So, institutional investors will have to buy bitcoin from existing investors. Even conservative demand assumptions from these investors—between 1% to 5% of their total assets— amounts to trillions of dollars. The World Bank believes that institutional investors control roughly $100 trillion in total assets. In the coming decade, that could mean investing $1 trillion to $5 trillion in bitcoin.
Supply
I noted above that there is a finite number of bitcoins. As of now, approximately 19.4 million Bitcoin have already been mined out of the total supply cap of 21 million. This means around 92% of all Bitcoin that will ever exist has been mined. Bitcoin’s supply is inelastic: no amount of demand for bitcoin or change in its price will cause more bitcoin to be produced, unlike gold, oil, or other major commodities.
Investment Perspective
A common question about bitcoin is: Why does it have any value? After all, bitcoin does not generate cash flows. In the view of bitcoin and cryptocurrency experts at Bitwise, the answer is... bitcoin is a service. It can store wealth in a digital format without relying on a bank or a government. The more people who want this service, the more valuable bitcoin becomes. The fewer people who want this service, the less valuable bitcoin becomes. If no one wants this service, the value of bitcoin is zero. This is no different from any other service. The difference lies in how that value accrues. Using traditional software providers as an example, users who want that service pay an annual subscription fee to the company. With bitcoin, you can’t pay a subscription fee. After all, there is no “Bitcoin Company.” Instead, the only way to get the service is to buy bitcoin. If you buy bitcoin, you get the service— the ability to store wealth in a digital format without a bank.
Risk
Historically, bitcoin has been a spectacular investment. The chart below shows its great gains since 2020. Like all investments, bitcoin certainly is not without risks. Bitcoin’s price can fluctuate wildly in a short period, leading to potential losses. Given its speculative nature, relying solely on price speculation without understanding the underlying technology or market trends increases risks associated with bitcoin. A unique risk to bitcoin is technological risk. Undiscovered flaws or future technological changes could render Bitcoin less useful or even obsolete.

Elevate the Humble Carrot for Fall Flavor
By Aly Baker, Blackhawk Bloomers
Fall offers so many delicious root vegetables but there is one that is often passed by and considered too bland to be of interest –the carrot. The humble carrot is really one of the most versatile vegetables, especially when roasted. Roasting brings out its earthy natural sweetness that only intensifies the flavor.
One of my favorite fall snacks is roasted carrot hummus with dukka, a Middle Eastern condiment that is a coarse blend of toasted nuts, seeds and dried herbs. Try this creamy hummus and savor the flavor of Fall.
Roast Carrot Hummus
• 1 lb. of carrots washed & peeled
• 4 tablespoons of good olive oil split
• 2-3 cloves of peeled garlic
• 2 teaspoons ground dukka
• 1 teaspoon ground cumin
• ½ tsp salt and pepper
• 3 tablespoons of tahini
• 1 lemon juiced
• ¼ cup (or more) water
Coat the carrots and garlic with 2 Tbs olive oil and roast in a 400-degree oven for 45 minutes or until tender and slightly charred. Let cool. Place in a food processor or blender with remaining ingredients and blend until smooth. Add more olive oil or water as needed to make it silky smooth. Serve with toasted pita bread and vegetables.

Stones That Speak
By Sonia Lamba, Resident since 2015 | Images by Sonia Lamba
Everywhere we go, stones hold the stories first. From castles in Ireland to forts in Himachal to temples in India—each stands as a memory keeper, carrying the echoes of time in their walls. Roman ruins crumble yet endure across Italy, Dunguaire Castle rises against the Atlantic winds, Kangra Fort holds centuries under bougainvillea and sky, and the Golden Temple’s marble steps shine with devotion.
Across continents, the language of stone remains the same—endurance. From dolmens in the Burren to arches in Chandigarh’s Mughal gardens, from California’s old missions to Rome’s ancient forums, these stones remind us that beauty lingers not in the new, but in what withstands.
Even in Blackhawk, stones play their part as memory keepers—edging the fairways, keeping watch by the tee boxes, and lining the paths where neighbors pause. They may not carry the centuries of castles or temples, but they hold our stories just the same, layered quietly into the place we call home.

Saratoga National Golf Club – A Modern Classic with Deep Roots
By Chuck Fox, Owner, Quintessential Golf, Resident since 2012

Saratoga Springs, in upstate New York, has always been a town of elegance, sport, and spectacle. In the 19th century, wealthy New Yorkers and Bostonians fled the city heat for its cool air, mineral waters, and grand hotels. By 1863, only weeks after the Battle of Gettysburg, horse racing put the town on the sporting map when John Morrissey staged Saratoga’s first thoroughbred meet. Today, the Saratoga Race Course remains America’s oldest major sporting venue.
It’s in this tradition that Saratoga National Golf Club was born in 2001. Carved from a former horse farm just outside the village, the club extends the town’s legacy of competition and leisure into the modern era. Designed by Roger Rulewich, a protégé of Robert Trent Jones Sr., the course embraces the land’s natural beauty— meandering marshes, six ponds, blue limestone walls, and more than two dozen wooden bridges—all framed by the rolling foothills of the Adirondacks.
First Impressions
Arriving at Saratoga National feels like entering a private estate. A stone gatehouse welcomes you onto a winding drive lined with ponds and fountains, leading to a Victorian-style clubhouse that could pass for one of Saratoga’s legendary hotels. Inside, hardwood floors and chandeliers set an opulent tone. Outside, sweeping terraces with fire pits and an infinity pool overlook the 18th green. The steakhouse is among the best in town, and the pro shop, The National, outfits golfers in classic Saratoga style.
Service Worthy of the Setting
From the moment bags are dropped, the club delivers country-club service without the exclusivity. Attendants anticipate every need, carts come equipped with GPS and coolers of ice and water, and practice facilities rival those of any private club. Multiple ranges, a large putting green, and a short-game area are all meticulously kept, and the balls on the range? Titleist, of course. The staff— golf pros, bag room, restaurant servers—treat every guest like a member, reinforcing the sense that this is something more than just another daily-fee course.
The Course
Rulewich’s design is both visually striking and strategically demanding. Ryegrass fairways, bentgrass greens, and thick fescue rough present immaculate playing surfaces, though the marshland soils can make the layout soft after heavy rain. Accuracy is the key: the course rewards drives in the fairway and punishes misses with water, wetlands, or rough that swallows golf balls whole.
The par threes are particularly stout. The 15th, the shortest at 177 yards, is an island green that demands as much nerve as it does precision. The par fives provide the real drama, especially the 13th, a 590-yard classic. After a tee shot over a stream, players face a second shot over water with two distinct choices: a long carry left to a wide fairway lined by water, or a shorter carry right to a narrower landing squeezed by bunkers. The approach into a slender green guarded on three sides by water is one of the most exhilarating shots in the region.
Small Greens
Plenty of Water

No homes intrude on the routing, and each hole feels carved from nature rather than imposed upon it. The back nine, with its marsh crossings and water carries, is both scenic and strategic—testament to Rulewich’s talent for creating holes that are as memorable to look at as they are to play.
A Saratoga Classic
Green fees soar 50% during Saratoga’s six-week racing season from mid-July through August, when the town swells with visitors. Yet for golfers who value history, hospitality, and a true championship test, the premium is worth it. Saratoga National is one of the few public courses in America that delivers the complete private-club experience—elegant facilities, first-class service, and a course that demands both strategy and nerve.
In a town where elegance and sport have been intertwined for more than 150 years, Saratoga National has staked its claim as the modern heir to that tradition. Here, golf doesn’t just complement Saratoga’s history—it becomes part of it.

Elegant Clubhouse & Patio
Dense Tree Lined
Cars and Coffee
By Celeste Altus, Photos by Celeste Altus

At the Friday morning Cars & Coffee, the smell of fresh espresso mingles with the unmistakable scent of polished chrome and gasoline as car lovers gather to swap stories and show off their rides. The lineup is never the same, but recent mornings have seen a Fiat Abarth buzzing into place beside a sleek Ford Mustang Shelby convertible, while a gleaming Chevy El Camino and a headturning 1969 Chevy Camaro drew crowds of admirers. It’s a relaxed, come-as-you-are kind of event where conversations flow as easily as the coffee, and every hood pop sparks a little more excitement.
Families strolled between rows of polished hoods and open trunks, snapping photos and chatting with proud owners. The air buzzed with the sound of engines revving. Those who attended knew their presence was helping a teen find hope and support.

The Evolution of the Facelift
By Brett Stompro, M.D., F.A.C.S.
My 30 year journey chasing the perfect facelift
Since I started Plastic Surgery in Blackhawk in 1994, I’ve always had a passion for Facial Rejuvenation because of the high stakes, complexity and challenge of each person’s anatomy. With a procedure like liposuction, there is room for a little error, but not with the face. Every little wrinkle, muscle and expression needs to be taken into consideration.
After performing over 1,000 facelifts throughout my career, direct learning from the world’s leading facelift masters and relentlessly pursuing better and better results, we are doing our best facelift ever.
In the early 2000’s, plastic surgeons started getting together to study the outcomes of their facelifts and compare notes on best practices. This led to tremendous advancements in techniques that produced superior results from traditional facelifts.
Only 3% of Plastic Surgeons are using the newest Facelift techniques.
Originally, facelifts typically pulled on the skin and didn’t focus on the underlying structure. We now know that to achieve a natural looking facelift result, the skin and the underlying muscle and ligaments need to be pulled in slightly different directions. Additionally, there have been massive advancements in the neck rejuvenation area of a facelift which produce much sleeker, smoother and longer lasting results.
This journey to perfect the Facelift has led me all over the country, to Dubai in the Middle East, visiting the operating rooms of some of the most renowned Facelift plastic surgeons in the world and having them visit our surgery center here in Blackhawk. Earlier this year I was honored to moderate a panel of those facelift experts on the topic of safety of deep neck surgery for the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
What’s Unique About Dr. Stompro’s Practice?
The most important factor of Plastic Surgery is the skill and talent of the surgeon. The artistic vision of the surgery, understanding anatomy and the smallest details are what sets Dr. Stompro apart from the rest.
The next most important factor is the team surrounding the surgeon - and we’ve got a good one. Our office Manager Stacey, Clinical Director Morghan, Surgical Technician Indira and Admin Linda have all been with us for over 21 years. Can you imagine how many patients they have seen walk through our office? Literally tens of thousands.
Anesthesiology is extremely important for any surgical procedure, however, most plastic surgeons do not know who

their anesthesiologist will be for that day when they walk into the operating room. At our surgery center, Dr. Stompro and Dr. Cheng have been working with our 3 anesthesiologists every day for over 20 years. The way the doctors, anesthesiologists and surgical technicians know each other is completely unmatched in the industry.
Another highly crucial difference that we offer to our patients is Lifetime Care. We are so dedicated to your results that we offer as many follow ups as you need. Many other offices offer one follow up and that’s it. This is important to know before choosing a practice. There is no office that is more dedicated to your satisfaction as a patient than our staff.
Our patients inspire us to deliver the highest quality results in the safest environment with the best patient care. We hope to see you in our office soon!

NQuintessa: 280 Acres of Winemaking Excellence in Rutherford
By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990, Photo by MJ McColgan
estled in the heart of Rutherford, the breathtaking Quintessa estate spans 280 acres of rolling vineyards, scenic hills, and tranquil lakes — a true gem in Napa Valley.
“Quintessa” is derived from the word “quintessence,” a nod to the five grape varietals grown on the estate: Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Verdot, Carménère, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. These grapes are meticulously cultivated to create wines of remarkable character and depth.
Founded by Valeria and Agustin Huneeus, Quintessa was envisioned as one of the world’s premier wine estates. Today, the exceptional wines that flow from this land have brought their vision to life, earning acclaim from connoisseurs around the globe.
Our visit began with a guided tour of the estate, available either by foot or via golf cart. We opted for the cart and were treated to sweeping views of vineyards, olive trees, and the serene lake that anchors the property.
Following the tour, we were welcomed into the sleek, modern tasting room, where our host Lisa greeted us with warmth and enthusiasm. Her deep knowledge and genuine passion for

Quintessa’s wines made the experience even more memorable. We started with the 2024 Illumination, a luminous white wine — an artful blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc Musqué, and Sémillon. It was crisp, balanced, and beautifully expressive. Next, we enjoyed a side-by-side tasting of the 2022 and 2013 Quintessa vintages. Both were exceptional, but the 2022 stood out for its complexity and elegance. A masterful blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% each of Carménère, Merlot, and Petite Verdot, it captured the very essence of the estate’s terroir.
We couldn’t leave empty-handed — a bottle of the 2024 Illumination and the 2022 Quintessa came home with us to Danville, ready to be shared with friends.
If you’re planning a Napa Valley getaway, Quintessa is an unforgettable experience — a must-visit for any wine lover’s bucket list.

DORÉ HEAD SPA & WELLNESS: The Japanese Scalp Care Experience Comes to Blackhawk
By Megan Scott, Resident Since 2010
When I first heard about Doré Head Spa & Wellness opening nearby, I was curious but didn’t really know what to expect. A “head spa”? Was it just a fancy shampoo? I couldn’t have been more wrong.
From the moment I walked in, I felt transported. The space was calm, serene, and beautifully designed— exactly the kind of atmosphere where you can’t help but take a deep breath and relax.
The treatment started with a consultation about my scalp and hair health, something I’d honestly never paid much attention to before. It wasn’t just pampering—it felt therapeutic.
I didn’t realize how much stress I carry in my head and scalp. By the

end, not only did my scalp feel cleaner and lighter, but my whole body felt restored. My hair was soft, shiny, and refreshed, but what surprised me most was how peaceful I felt walking out.
Doré describes their approach as guided by the Japanese philosophy of yoroshiku onegaishimasu—building trust and connection through care. And honestly, that’s exactly how it felt. I wasn’t just a client; I felt cared for in a way that was personal and genuine.
They are located in Blackhawk Plaza and if you’ve never tried a head spa, trust me—add this to your self-care list. It’s not just a beauty treatment; it’s a full reset for your scalp, your hair, and your mind.
