Dr. Shobana Vankipuram: Healing & Storytelling
By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010
Bharatanatyam and medicine might seem like two separate worlds. For Blackhawk resident Dr. Shobana Vankipuram, they are parallel paths that meet at the same place: service, discipline, and connection.
Finding home in Blackhawk
Shobana has called Blackhawk home for a few years. She was drawn by the warmth, diversity, and strong sense of community. It is a place where her dual callings as a physician and Bharatanatyam dancer can flourish. “The community’s openness to cultural experiences makes it possible to share this art in meaningful ways,” she says.
An early spark that never faded
Her artistic journey began at age four, inspired by a grandmother devoted to Carnatic music and the veena. Dance paused at times for academics and family, yet the passion stayed. Over the last decade, Shobana has returned to intensive training and now studies with her guru, Shobana Bhalchandra. “Art and medicine are two paths of empowerment,” she says. “Each enriches life and invites healing at a deep level.”
What is Bharatanatyam
Bharatanatyam is one of India’s oldest classical dance forms. It began in temples as a devotional offering, set to Carnatic music with intricate rhythms, graceful geometry, and expressive storytelling. Rooted in tradition, it continues to evolve and speak to audiences around the world.
Teacher, mentor, bridge-builder
Through her school, Tejasvi Natyalaya, named after her daughter Tejasvi (Tejasvi means “radiant,” Natyalaya means “house of dance”), Shobana teaches more than technique. She aims to create a studio where tradition and empowerment meet, where each dancer’s voice can shine. “The most rewarding part is watching quiet transformations,” she says. “Discipline and expression build confidence from the inside out.”
Medicine and dance, working together
Balancing clinic hours with rehearsals is demanding. Shobana manages it by seeing both roles as complementary. Medicine heals the body. Dance nourishes the spirit. The focus and listening she practices with patients flow naturally into her teaching and performance. “Both require empathy, observation, and the ability to connect,” she explains.
Community threads
Blackhawk has shaped her journey in tangible ways. Shobana has shared Bharatanatyam at the Garden Club luncheon and at the community’s Diwali celebrations. Tejasvi Natyalaya has hosted a local workshop and performed across the TriValley, including the Hayward World Dance Festival. These moments bring artists, students, and audiences together for cultural dialogue.
What is next
This year brings a full calendar: the RAW showcase at Safehouse Arts in San Francisco in October, the school’s first annual day celebration at the Front Row Theater in November, a dance presentation for the national AAPIO gala in San Francisco in November ( American Association Of Physicians of Indian Origin) and a women-centric fundraiser concert for Narika in March 2026. Narika’s mission
of empowering women is close to Shobana’s heart. She has served on the organization’s board and continues to support its work.
Looking ahead, she plans annual showcases, cross-cultural collaborations, and outreach that doubles as a living classroom. Students will study and present iconic choreographies by the Tanjore Quartet, lyrical works of Maharaja Swati Thirunal, and expressive pieces such as javalis and padams. They will share research on history, poetry, and storytelling traditions to help audiences see how Bharatanatyam has traveled from sacred temple floors to royal courts to international stages.
Anchors and inspiration
Shobana credits her grandmother for opening the door to the arts, and her guru for continued guidance. She also honors her husband, Ananth Balasubramanian, for steady support that makes both medicine and dance possible. Their children, Tejasvi (13), also a budding dancer and Nandan, a budding cricketer (11), keep life joyful and
grounded. For creative reset, she walks the neighborhood, letting silence and nature shape new choreography.
Values to live by
Integrity, compassion, and lifelong learning guide her work in the clinic and the studio. Her advice to young people who love both science and art is simple. You do not have to choose. With passion, discipline, and structure, you can excel in both. Each one will make you stronger in the other.

Pumpkin Flavored Cookies
By Parisa Z. Ambwani, Resident since 1983
Serves 8
Preheat oven to 350-degree F. Line 1 rimmed cookie sheet with parchment paper.
Ingredients:
• 3 cups unbleached all-purpose flour (King Arthur organic flour is my preference)
• 2 teaspoons baking powder (aluminum-free)
• 1 dash sea salt (sift together flour, baking powder and salt-2 times)
• ¾ cup raw sugar, ground
• 1½ sticks sweet butter, cut into 12 small pieces and chill
• 2 large eggs at room temperature (slightly whisk eggs and lemon zest together)
• 1 lemon zest (grated peel) about 1 tablespoon
Pumpkin Filling:
• 1 cup harvest-butternut squash, baked, pureed
• 1/8 teaspoon (1 dash) of each spice: Mace, clove, and all-spices
• ¼ teaspoon of each spice: Nutmeg and cinnamon, freshly ground
• 1 dash sea salt
• 1 teaspoon unsweetened butter
• 2 teaspoons sugar, powder
How to Make Sweet Pastry-Dough: To the food processor, add sifted ingredients (flour, baking powder and salt), and sugar. Pulse a few times to mix well. Add butter pieces one by one through feed tube, as you pulse each time. Then add egg-lemon mixture into feed tube while food processor is running. Pulse a few more times until all the flour is mixed in and the dough cleans the bowl of all flour. Remove dough from food processor and wrap it in thin plastic wrap; place in sealed plastic zip bag and refrigerate for several hours or overnight.
When you are ready to make cookies, remove dough from refrigerator and leave out for 1-2 hours until it reaches room temperature before rolling. Cover a wooden board with thin plastic wrap, place pastry dough on the plastic wrap and cover with another plastic wrap. With your hands, press gently on top of dough to create a smooth flat surface. Roll dough to ¼ -inch thick.
Remove top plastic wrap from pastry dough. Use 2 ½-inch pumpkin cookie cutter (dust the edge with flour) to cut pastry dough; cut all the same size and shape, one for the top (with a small cut for making a creative design in the middle of dough), the other one for the bottom with filling.
Mix all pumpkin filling together until creamy. Spread 2 teaspoons of filling in the center of bottom dough and top with design cut out. Gently press together to form like a sandwich.
Transfer pumpkin cookies sandwich onto the parchment paper, 1-inch apart. Bake in preheated 350-degree F. oven, on the middle rack, for about 8-10 minutes or until cookies are firm and have slight color change. Remove cookies to cooling rack. Cooled cookies will be tender.

Falling Back Into Swim
By Stacie Mihalik, HOX Marketing
As we turn the calendar to November, our Blackhawk Swim Team (HOX) swimmers are well into the 2025 Fall Swim Program, which runs through November 21. Since September, athletes have stayed active, sharpened their strokes, and kept the momentum of summer alive under the steady leadership of Head Coach Sean Quackenbush and the entire coaching team.
“Fall Swim is the perfect bridge between summer and the competitive season ahead,” shares Coach Sean. “It’s a time when swimmers rediscover their rhythm, work on the finer points of their strokes, and simply enjoy the sport without pressure.”
By now, returning swimmers have continued to build friendships, confidence, and skills, while new families have discovered the supportive spirit of the HOX community. Optional fall meets have given athletes a chance to gain race experience without the intensity of a championship season — striking just the right balance of progress and fun.
This season of gratitude reminds us how fortunate we are to have a dedicated coaching staff guiding our swimmers. Their expertise and encouragement have helped every athlete not only improve in the water but also develop resilience, teamwork, and joy — lessons that will carry them far beyond the fall.
Meet the Coaches
This fall, we’re thankful for the experienced and passionate HOX coaching staff guiding our swimmers:
Sean Quackenbush – Head Coach & Aquatics Director
Michelle McConnell – Assistant Coach
Steve Guthrie – Assistant Coach
Jessica Cloke – Assistant Coach
Katherine Fulton – Assistant Coach
With decades of experience, they blend technical expertise with encouragement, creating a season where swimmers can grow, stay connected, and enjoy the sport they love.
This fall, we give thanks for our coaches — the heart of the HOX community.

Flight Days
Every Thursday, BWGA players enjoy a weekly Play Day. However, once a month, that Play Day is replaced by Flight Day. Unlike regular Play Days, where individuals are placed onto teams with varying handicaps, Flight Days require players to be ranked by handicap, and each person plays for their best individual score in Stroke Play format.
Over the course of the year the monthly Overall Gross Winners and monthly Overall Net Winners are recorded. These individuals then participate in an annual Flight Day Playoff at the end of November. As of writing, there is one more Flight Day - on October 16th - when the final winners will be added to the following list for the November Playoff:

Prepping Your House and Furnace for the Fall and Winter
By Chris Donzelli, Owner of Perfect Star Heating, Cooling & Electrical
Asthe mornings get cooler and the days grow shorter here in the East Bay, I’m reminded every year of how important it is to prepare our homes for the fall and winter. Having worked in heating and cooling for decades, I’ve seen the difference that a little seasonal preparation can make—not only in keeping families warm and safe but also in lowering utility bills and avoiding costly repairs.
Here are a few of the best ways I recommend homeowners get their houses and furnaces ready before the first cold snap hits.
1. Schedule a Furnace Tune-Up
Your furnace has likely been sitting idle for most of the summer. Before you flip the switch for the season, it’s critical to have it professionally inspected and serviced. A tune-up ensures that the system is running efficiently, checks for any carbon monoxide risks, and catches small issues before they turn into major problems. Think of it like an oil change for your car—you wouldn’t want to head into a long road trip without it. Find our $59 special in this Blackhawk Living issue!
2. Replace or Clean Your Air Filters
This is one of the simplest and most effective steps you can take. A clogged filter forces your furnace to work harder, driving up your energy bills and putting unnecessary strain on the system. For most homes, replacing filters every 1–3 months is a good rule of thumb. Not only will your system run better, but your indoor air quality will improve as well—something we can all appreciate during flu and allergy season.
3. Seal Up Drafts and Insulate
Even the best furnace can’t keep you comfortable if your home is leaking warm air. Check around doors, windows, and attic spaces for drafts, and use weatherstripping or caulking where needed. Proper insulation in your attic and walls can significantly cut heat loss, making your home more energy-efficient and reducing wear and tear on your furnace.
4. Test Your Thermostat
Before the temperature drops, switch your thermostat over to heating mode and make sure it’s working properly. If you’re still using a traditional thermostat, consider upgrading to a programmable or smart thermostat. These allow you to set schedules or control your system remotely, helping you save energy without sacrificing comfort.
5. Check Safety Devices
Fall is also a great time to test your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Your furnace is a fuel-burning appliance, and while modern systems are extremely safe, no home should be without working detectors. Replace batteries if needed and make sure you have one on every level of your house.
6. Clear the Area Around Your Furnace
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen furnaces surrounded by boxes, decorations, or storage bins. Keeping at least three feet of clearance around your furnace not only ensures proper airflow but also reduces fire hazards.
Final Thoughts
Prepping your home for the colder months doesn’t have to be overwhelming. A few proactive steps now can save you money, extend the life of your system, and, most importantly, keep your family safe and comfortable all season long. If you haven’t scheduled your fall furnace tune-up yet, now is the perfect time to give Perfect Star a call.
Stay warm this season,
Send a Message This Thanksgiving
By Aly Baker, Blackhawk Bloomers
Thanksgiving is when we share our gratitude through the friends and family we gather together and the food we serve. But did you know the flowers on the table can send a special seasonal message as well.
Some of the most popular floral arrangements for Thanksgiving include chrysanthemums, marigolds, and sunflowers. These blooms are known for their rich, warm colors of deep yellows, oranges and reds but also are chosen for their symbolism at this special time of the year.
Chrysanthemums (Mums): Are a classic autumn flower available in deep oranges, yellows, burgundies, and rust reds. They are a staple of Thanksgiving decor and symbolize gratitude and abundance.
Sunflowers: These cheerful yellow and orange blooms
represent happiness. Their bold size makes them an excellent focal point for a centerpiece.
Marigolds: Vibrant orange and yellow marigolds bring rich colors and are known for their long-lasting blooms. The vibrant colors are associated with joy and happiness, and their hardy nature and long blooming period make them a symbol of resilience and inner strength.
This Thanksgiving send a message of love, joy and friendship from the food you serve to the flowers on your table. The Blackhawk Bloomers Garden Club wishes everyone a happy, healthy holiday. If you would like to learn more or become a member of this fantastic organization, please contact Kathy Harkins kdharkins@att.net . Our programs are designed for fun, personal enrichment and a way to meet and grow friendships

Sukhna Lake: A November Sunrise Memory
By Sonia Lamba, Resident since 2015 | Images by Sonia Lamba
Mornings at the lake start early, before the city fully wakes. Walkers gather along the promenade, pigeons stir, and a few boats glide quietly across the water as the sky shifts from deep red to orange. Before the crowds arrive, car horns blare, and vendors begin lifting shutters, the lake holds its own quiet pace. I still remember standing there with my mom that November morning a few years ago—watching the shimmer on the lake and the fire-colored sky spread across the calm water at Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh, India.
As another year winds down, that memory feels even more relevant. November carries that same slower pace—when routines ease, reflections deepen, and gratitude comes a little easier. Here in Blackhawk, the days grow shorter and the hills turn softer in tone, but the quiet start of a new day still feels the same—steady, grounding, and full of gentle light.
Do you ever revisit a place in your mind when the year slows down?
Photographer and videographer capturing the quiet beauty of nature, travel, and everyday life. After a career in finance, I’ve embraced a long-held creative passion—turning moments into visual stories through both images and motion. Old Corkscrew –A Hidden Gem Between Coast and Wilderness
By Chuck Fox, Owner, Quintessential Golf, Resident since 2012
Estero, Florida — Jack Nicklaus Signature Design (Opened 2007)
A Hidden Gem Between Coast and Wilderness
Old Corkscrew Golf Club lies just east of Interstate 75, tucked along the quiet stretch of Corkscrew Road that meanders inland from Florida’s glittering Gulf Coast. It’s perfectly positioned between Naples and Fort Myers yet feels light-years removed from both. Five minutes west brings traffic and shopping; five minutes east, the pine forests reclaim the land, and silence settles in.
The course sits on 275 acres of protected preserve, surrounded by cypress domes, marshes, and oak hammocks. Bordering the Audubon Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, it shares its name and its soul with the region’s wild heart. The morning mist, the distant calls of herons, and the absence of rooftops make it one of the most tranquil settings in Florida golf.
Playability and Challenge
This Jack Nicklaus Signature Design isn’t built for easy rounds. From the tips it measures 7,393 yards, but even the 6,600-yard middle tees demand precision over power. Fairways look inviting until you realize the angles and elevation shifts are designed to test decision-making.
For a mid-handicap golfer, it’s a thrilling education. The par-5 4th tempts a bold carry for a shot at eagle but punishes any miss. The par-3 8th is deceptively short yet framed by bunkers that devour anything under-hit. The closing holes reward patience more than aggression.
The greens are quick, tiered, and full of mischief. Get above the hole and you’re suddenly playing defense. Yet the challenge never feels unfair—just demanding in the purest Nicklaus way.
Wilderness, Framed by Vegetation
The Setting and Ambience
Old Corkscrew’s magic lies in its seclusion. Each hole feels carved from wilderness, framed by untouched vegetation. You might spot deer crossing a fairway or a gator drifting beneath a footbridge. The lack of housing turns every swing into a quiet duel between player and design.
Adding to its prestige, the course hosts the Leadbetter Golf Academy, where visiting players can refine their mechanics under world-class instruction. It’s a fitting companion to a course that prizes precision and thoughtful play.
Clubhouse and Hospitality
The clubhouse is modern, efficient, and relaxed. Inside, a pro shop stocked with premium gear opens to a casual grill overlooking the 18th green. Service is friendly, the food hits the spot, and the shaded patio is the perfect vantage point to watch others battle Nicklaus’s closing stretch.
Verdict: For the Thoughtful Golfer
Old Corkscrew Golf Club isn’t designed to flatter—it’s designed to reveal. For a mid-handicap player, every hole teaches something about judgment, control, and temperament. You may not post your career round here, but you’ll leave with a deeper respect for both the game and the landscape that shapes it.
A source of golf travel inspiration, Quintessential Golf online magazine spotlights the most spectacular, enduring and scenic courses, resorts and golf adventures. Written from a players point-of-view, articles include magnificent high-resolution course images. Brought to you by Chuck Fox, single-digit golfer, writer and photographer based in Danville, California, he is fulfilling his passion and dream to play, photograph and share the romance and beauty of golf throughout North America.

East Bay Street Dreams Gallops into Blackhawk
By Celeste Altus, Photos by Celeste Altus
This fall, the annual East Bay Street Dreams car show rolled into town, drawing a gleaming lineup of classic cars that turned every head in the plaza. It seemed like a lot of 1960s era Ford Mustangs made the trip. From the deep growl of ’60s coupes to the polished chrome of candy-colored convertibles, the show was a Mustang lover’s dream come true.
Each car gleamed like a jewel—meticulously restored, waxed to perfection, and proudly displayed by owners who’ve poured their hearts (and probably their wallets) into preserving a piece of American muscle. Crowds strolled through rows of pony power, swapping stories, snapping photos, and debating which decade did it best. By midmorning, the air buzzed with nostalgia and gasoline perfume—a perfect mix for anyone who believes Detroit once built art on four wheels. East Bay Street Dreams didn’t just showcase cars; it celebrated the passion that keeps them alive.

The Golden Moment: What Rising Gold Prices Mean for You
By Steve Padis, Padis Jewelry San Francisco | Napa | Walnut Creek Family
Gold is shining brighter than ever.
Prices have surged to nearly $4,000 per ounce, up more than 50% from a year ago — one of the strongest runs in modern history. At Padis Jewelry, we believe understanding why this matters helps our clients make confident, informed choices about their fine jewelry.
Why Gold Is Rising
Several powerful forces are driving this surge:
• Global Uncertainty – In turbulent times, investors turn to gold as a safe haven.
• Central Bank Buying – Many nations are increasing gold reserves, creating sustained demand.
• Inflation and Interest Rates – With inflation still high and rates expected to ease, gold continues to attract investors seeking stability.

The result is a historically tight market where gold’s value is climbing faster than most other commodities.
What It Means for Jewelry Buyers
Because gold is the foundation for so many designs, rising prices directly affect jewelry production costs. Across the industry, many retailers are adding “gold surcharges” or updating price tags weekly to keep up with market volatility. At Padis Jewelry, our customers enjoy a unique advantage.
Why Padis Customers Are Protected
Unlike most jewelers, Padis Jewelry owns all of its inventory outright. That means we don’t rely on consignment or lastminute sourcing—so when gold prices spike, our in-stock items retain their original, favorable pricing.
You’ll find one of the Bay Area’s largest selections of fine gold jewelry without added surcharges, tariffs, or surprise markups. Our family’s independent approach lets you shop a vast in-stock collection—hundreds of pieces ready to wear today—at values that predate this most recent gold rally.
This independence also allows us to offer transparent guidance, helping you select pieces that balance metal value, craftsmanship, and timeless design.
How to Shop Smart Right Now
If you’re thinking about a new piece—or reassessing your collection—now is the perfect time to act wisely:
• Buy Sooner Rather Than Later –As suppliers restock, future inventory will reflect higher gold prices.
• Focus on Design – Skilled craftsmanship can deliver beautiful results while minimizing gold weight.
• Explore Different Karats or Metals
– 14K gold, platinum, and mixedmetal designs offer beauty, durability, and better price balance.
• Update Your Appraisals for Insurance Purposes – With gold at record highs, your jewelry may be
worth far more than before. Updating appraisals ensures your insurance reflects true replacement value— protecting you against loss or damage.
A Golden Opportunity
If you already own gold jewelry, this is also an ideal time to re-evaluate or refresh your collection. Many clients are surprised to learn their existing pieces have appreciated in value simply due to the gold content. Our team offers complimentary evaluations and redesign consultations to help you make the most of what you already own. As gold continues to rise, one thing remains constant: fine jewelry is both an emotional investment and a lasting store of value.
At Padis Jewelry, we’re here to help you navigate this extraordinary moment with integrity, transparency, and one of the region’s most extensive, surcharge-free selections.
Our teams at Padis Jewelry Walnut Creek, San Francisco or Napa are happy to assist you in any way and deliver your selections via our concierge service at concierge@ padisjewelry.com.
