“We had to laugh about it then — what else can you do?” Kathie says, laughing even now. Originally from Minneapolis (Kathie) and a small village in Ohio (Chuck), they both began careers in the growing world of information technology in the late 1960s. Kathie later chose to stay home to raise their children, while Chuck built his career in the semiconductor industry, moving from IT management to corporate finance and eventually helping monetize patents. Chuck’s expertise has helped secure more than 75 licenses and over $350 million in royalties for his clients. “Helping individual inventors and small or mediumsized enterprises protect and benefit from their inventiveness is a prerequisite to fund future leaps in technology,” says Chuck. Yet it’s their shared love of photography and travel that has truly defined their lives. Together they’ve explored more than 75 countries, including Antarctica, capturing street scenes, landscapes, and night images that have won juried competitions. Chuck even had a breathtaking photo of the aurora borealis featured by National Geographic. “There’s just something about chasing the light,” he says, “that never gets old.”

Meet Chuck & Kathie: Capturing a Lifetime of Adventures

By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010 Photos Courtesy of Neuenschwander Family

A

t first glance, Chuck and Kathie Neuenschwander might appear to be a typicalretired couple enjoying their days in the peaceful setting of Blackhawk. But take a closer look, and you’ll discover a pair of unstoppable adventurers who have spent decades capturing the world through a camera lens — and living with remarkable curiosity, resilience, and a sense of humor. Their story began in 1967 at a copy machine in the Monsanto Company office in St. Louis. That chance meeting sparked a journey that has spanned almost six decades, dozens of countries, and countless memories. Married in 1972, they soon moved to Springfield, Massachusetts, then back to St. Louis before landing in Dallas, where they would spend 41 years raising their family. One of their earliest dating memories perfectly reflects their spirit: floating down the Current River in a canoe, only to have Chuck accidentally trigger a cascade of daddy-long-legs spiders dropping onto them.

Of course, not every adventure goes as planned. One of Kathie’s most unforgettable moments came during a trip to Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories, when she discovered a naked man sleeping in a hotel elevator at 5 a.m. “I’ve learned to expect the unexpected,” she says with a grin. While they loved discovering the world, their greatest joy comes from family. Their son Erik, Senior Director of Privacy at Apple, and his wife Sonya have made their home on the West Coast, while daughter Bryn — a published fantasy novelist who writes under the name Marie Brennan — moved to California with her husband Kyle. Their two grandsons round out a close-knit family who all live within a mile and a half of each other on the peninsula. During the pandemic, Chuck stood on a beach with Erik in Half Moon Bay and had a moment of clarity: “We could live like this,” he told Erik. Soon after, Bryn pressed them with a heartfelt question: “Why do the two of you want to stay in Dallas? We’re all out here.” Six months later, they had wrapped up their affairs in Texas and arrived in California in August 2021, right in the middle of a challenging housing market. After looking at 47 houses, they bid on their first — right here in Blackhawk — and moved in February 2022. Chuck jokes that they moved for “the cheaper housing and lower taxes,” but in truth, it was all about family and quality of life. “It just felt right to be closer to everyone,” Kathie adds. Settled now on Buttonwood Drive, they have no

regrets. “We love everything about living in the East Bay and Blackhawk,” Chuck says. Kathie stays active in the Blackhawk Women’s Club, and together they continue to support their grandsons’ soccer and flag football games. They also still root for their favorite sports teams — Kathie cheering for the Minnesota Gophers and Chuck for the Ohio State Buckeyes — while sharing loyalty for the Dallas Cowboys and Stars. Even as they explore closer to home, their passports are never too far away.

They plan trips that stretch for five to six weeks at a time, eager to discover new places and capture them on camera. “There’s still so much out there to see,” Chuck says. Carpe vinum — seize the wine — as Chuck likes to say. It’s a playful motto for a couple who have truly seized every opportunity to explore, experience, and celebrate together. And now, here in Blackhawk, they’ve found a community to match their adventurous spirit and zest for living.

The New Retirement Landscape By John J. Gardner, CFP®, CPM®, AIF® Blackhawk Wealth Advisors

Strategic Planning for Wealth Preservation and Long-Term Security Retirement today is not just about turning off the work switch at a certain age; it’s an evolving journey that demands strategic planning, especially for high-net-worth families. Shifts in life expectancy, healthcare, tax laws, and market volatility mean that a comprehensive approach is essential to ensure a secure and fulfilling retirement. Blackhawk Wealth Advisors employs a collaborative, multi-generational model by using tax efficient and risk mitigation strategies to maintain your current lifestyle while meeting your long-term needs and goals. Here are a few planning considerations: •

Longevity and Healthcare Costs: People are living longer than ever before. While this is positive, it also requires more careful planning to fund potentially decades of retirement. Healthcare costs, often underestimated, can significantly erode wealth. Incorporating long-term care insurance and health savings accounts (HSAs) into your strategy can help mitigate unforeseen medical expenses.

•

Tax-Efficient Withdrawal Strategies: Tax considerations remain central. Structuring withdrawals from tax advantaged accounts such as Roth IRAs and establishing tax-efficient withdrawal sequences can preserve wealth. Proper planning ensures that distributions are optimized, meaning minimizing taxes and maximizing the longevity of your assets. This is an area where a Roth IRA Conversion may be helpful.

•

Diversification and Income Generation: Market fluctuations can threaten retirement savings. Highnet-worth families should consider diversifying investments beyond traditional equities and bonds to include alternative assets like real estate, private equity, or income-producing investment strategies. These can add stability and income streams, reducing reliance on market performance alone. An over-concentration in equities, for example, can disrupt retirement savings accounts and plans for years during a prolonged “bear” market. That was a tough lesson learned in the 2007-2009 “Great Financial Crisis” global stock market selloff.

•

•

Estate and Legacy Planning: A well-crafted estate plan ensures wealth transfer aligns with family goals and minimizes tax impact. This includes establishing trusts, gifting strategies, and designated beneficiaries, all while maintaining control over assets during lifetime. Planning for succession helps protect wealth for future generations and can involve philanthropic efforts, which offer both tax benefits and legacy reinforcement. Embracing Flexibility and Regular Review: Retirement planning isn’t a one-and-done process; it’s a dynamic plan requiring regular review and adjustment.

Economic conditions, tax laws, personal circumstances, and goals evolve. High-net-worth families should work with advisors to revisit their plans annually, ensuring they adapt to changes and stay on course. •

Technology and Financial Education: In today’s digital age, access to financial information and tools is unprecedented. Engaging with innovative software, online dashboards, and ongoing financial education empowers families to make informed decisions and adapt strategies as needed. After all, a trustworthy, experienced investment advisor can provide you with confident guidance.

In summary… retirement for high-net-worth families involves proactive, disciplined planning across multiple dimensions. It is a process. By focusing on longevity, tax efficiency, investment diversification, estate planning, and ongoing review, families can craft a retirement strategy that not only preserves wealth but also supports a meaningful, secure future. Contact me if you have any questions. I am happy to help.

Let’s work together to meet your financial goals. With 40 years as an investment advisor, John Gardner has gained valuable investment insight, experience, and knowledge. Blackhawk Wealth Advisors has the certifications and qualifications you can trust to successfully guide you with your financial goals. We provide strategic investment solutions to high new worth individuals to help them grow and preserve their wealth.

Why Local Businesses

Need An Online Listings Service Inaccurate or outdated online information can severely impact local businesses. Key findings from a Local Business Discovery & Trust Report showed that 62% of consumers would avoid using a business if they found incorrect information online.1

By Jo Peek Expert Contributor

Outdated information leads to many challenges for local businesses

Accurate business listings can give companies a competitive edge

Customers may show up when you’re closed, leading to frustration, loss of trust, and potentially a negative review.

Consistent information builds credibility and trust with new and existing customers, giving them peace of mind to choose your business over others.

Mismatched info across platforms can confuse search algorithms, reducing your search ranking and overall visibility.

Accurate listings lead to increased engagement and improved search rankings, boosting your local visibility.

Managing dozens of individual listings is a headache and takes time away from running your business.

Easier updates from a single dashboard allow businesses to conveniently manage their online information with just a few clicks, saving valuable time for owners.

Inconsistent or missing details lead to fewer customer interactions and missed revenue opportunities. An online listings service ensures that your business data, such as your name, address, phone number, hours, and website, is accurate across search engines, maps and directories.

When your info is up-to-date, more people will find you, reach out, and stop by, which can directly boost your bottom line. Online listings services help local businesses stay competitive, visible, and credible. Don’t let wrong information limit your growth.

Danville’s Freedom Cruise Rolled Out in Red, White, and Vroom! By Celeste Altus, Photos by Celeste Altus

D

owntown Danville revved up the holiday spirit early this year with its July 3 Freedom Cruise, a flag-waving, engine-roaring celebration of Independence Day, a little early. Classic cars lined the streets—each one shinier and prouder than the next. A vintage Camaro turned heads, while a custom convertible VW van dubbed the “Dub Tub” stole the show, cruising by, pure personality. From muscle cars to hot rods, some rides were wrapped in red, white, and blue, rolling past crowds and setting the tone for a star-spangled Fourth. Horns honked, kids waved, and the town felt the joy of freedom. If you missed it, you missed a slice of Americana on parade. But don’t worry—Danville’s love of classic cars (and a good time) isn’t going anywhere.

From Ranch Roots to Racing Lanes: Coach Jessica’s Story By Stacie Mihalik

W

hen you first meet Coach Jessica on deck, it’s clear there’s something special about her energy. Maybe it’s the calm confidence, the big smile, or the way swimmers seem to instantly gravitate toward her. But when you learn more about her journey, you understand why. Behind the encouraging voice and technical expertise is a coach shaped by wide-open farmland, backyard swim lessons, and a deep-rooted passion to help others grow — in the pool and in life. Jessica grew up in Spokane, WA, helping on her grandfather’s barley and cattle ranch and swimming in her grandparents’ backyard pool. That early love of water sparked a lifelong passion: she joined a swim team at age 10 and later played club water polo in college. After moving to California, Jessica began teaching at swim schools across the Bay Area, determined to better understand how to connect with swimmers on a personal level. “I found myself spending more and more time each summer on Meet Mobile, tracking the progress of swimmers I had taught who were now on teams,” she says. That quiet pull back to coaching grew stronger with every passing season.

meet goals they’ve worked hard for and often reminds swimmers: “Do one thing today that will help your future self.” When she’s not coaching, she’s training for the Ironman series, teaching swim classes at Stanford, rock climbing, or pursuing her dual major in Kinesiology and Early Childhood Education — with plans to eventually earn a PhD in Kinesiology. And her premeet ritual is as thoughtful as her coaching: tea, yoga, meditation, visualization — and a good game of fetch with her two dogs.

It was a former mentor, Coach Sharron, that inspired Jessica to keep coaching. “She believed in me. I want to give that same kind of support to my swimmers,” Jessica says. When she found HOX, she knew it was the right fit. “I remember talking with Coach Sean and knowing instantly — this is where I want to be. The dedication, the knowledge, the spirit… it was all here.” Jessica is quick to highlight what makes HOX unique: “The connection. The community. Every coach here is incredibly passionate and knowledgeable — that’s rare. There’s a level of care and dedication across the board that you just don’t find everywhere.” It’s clear she’s found her place, and she’s determined to make every swimmer’s experience as meaningful as her own. “I hope every swimmer leaves HOX with core memories that stay with them — and that they grow into strong, confident leaders because of it.” Jessica’s style is rooted in motivation and growth. She loves watching kids

AUGUST 2025

HOX Highlights: Team Spirit Day & Battle of the Ages HOX families came together on June 16 for Team Spirit Day, a joyful celebration of community and team pride. Swimmers splashed around in floaties, team photos were snapped, and Patchologie hosted a pop-up where swimmers created their own HOX-branded gear — a fun and creative way to show team spirit. Just two weeks later, the excitement continued with the Battle of the Ages Swim Meet on June 28–29. This two-day invitational

gave swimmers aged 4–18 the chance to compete exclusively against others their same age — a rare and exciting format. Even better, swimmers and families got to choose their events, creating a personalized and empowering race experience. Whether it’s cheering from the deck, designing custom merch, or racing for personal bests, HOX is more than a swim team — it’s a vibrant, connected community. And thanks to coaches like Jessica, it’s one that keeps growing stronger every day. To learn more about swim programs visit www.hoxswim.com or reach out to Coach Sean directly at seanq@blackhawkcc.org. Keep an eye out — Fall Swim is just around the corner! It’s a great way for swimmers to stay active and enhance and develop the skills they worked so hard on all summer!

The Unsung Hero of Comfort:

WHY HVAC DESERVES THE SPOTLIGHT By Chris Donzelli, Owner of Perfect Star Heating, Cooling & Electrical In the world of skilled trades, few fields are as versatile—or as essential—as HVAC.

What Clients Often Don’t Realize

Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning professionals quietly protect one of life’s most basic needs: comfort. Far beyond fixing machines, HVAC work blends electrical, mechanical, and even plumbing skills to keep homes safe, efficient, and livable.

•

Regulations are evolving. New energy standards are increasing system costs, but for good reason—efficiency and environmental protection.

•

Not all refrigerants are equal. Some older systems rely on phasedout refrigerants that are costly or unavailable.

•

Marketing can be misleading. A low price doesn’t always equal quality. Due diligence matters.

At Perfect Star, we see HVAC not just as a profession, but a way to give back. It’s incredibly rewarding to serve East Bay homeowners— but equally meaningful is mentoring the next generation of technicians. Watching someone grow from apprentice to expert reminds us that the future of comfort relies on those willing to learn, lead, and serve.

Beyond Tools: Heart Behind the Work

Our work is grounded in community. Through our Perfect Star Gives Back program and Lennox’s Feel the Love initiative, we’ve proudly provided free HVAC systems and repairs to families facing hardship, veterans, and local heroes in the East Bay Area. From the outside, HVAC may seem like wires and ductwork—but it’s deeply personal. We help people sleep through heatwaves, protect air quality during wildfire season, and bring peace of mind to parents and grandparents alike. Comfort isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. We take that responsibility seriously.

What Every Homeowner Should Know A few tips from the pros: •

Change your filters regularly. It improves air quality and extends your system’s life.

•

Choose your HVAC partner carefully. Not all companies are created equal. Look for training, transparency, and trust.

There are important industry truths every homeowner should know:

That’s why Perfect Star is proud to be Diamond Certified. Our technicians are rigorously trained, vetted, and held to the highest standards.

The Changing Climate of HVAC

HVAC isn’t just about comfort—it’s about health and safety. Today’s systems support wellness and even extend life expectancy. But we must also recognize our environmental footprint. At Perfect Star, we’re committed to sustainability. We're staying ahead of new regulations and offering high-efficiency systems that perform while preserving the planet. We owe it to future generations to be thoughtful stewards of the environment.

In Closing

HVAC may not always be in the spotlight, but it’s foundational to modern life. At Perfect Star, we’re honored to serve the East Bay with expertise, heart, and integrity. If you’re ready for honest advice, expert service, and a team that treats your home like their own—call Perfect Star.

Community Corner

Message from Chief of Police, Jeff Schultz By Chief of Police, Jeff Schultz

T

he Blackhawk HOA hosted a safety and awareness presentation where both San Ramon Valley Fire Department representatives and I spoke. Part of the presentation touched on evacuation procedures in the event Blackhawk was ordered to evacuate. The following page provides a diagram of Blackhawk, excluding the communities located outside the Main and East Gates. This diagram shows a vehicular evacuation route providing the nearest exit from the community, based on where your residence is located. For residents right near the border of a color change, please keep in mind a one-directional flow of traffic was taken into consideration as well to help expedite the evacuation process. In the event of a needed evacuation, there are four vehicular exit points for residents to utilize. Obviously, there are Main and East gates, stationed and monitored 24/7 by HOA privacy staff. The other two gates are always locked and located at the end of Live Oak Ct. and the south end of Blackhawk Meadow Dr. (Hansen Gate). In the event of an ordered or emergency evacuation, these gates will be

unlocked by either my staff or HOA privacy staff. For residents in the green highlighted area on the map, it is recommended you exit the community through the Live Oak Ct. gate, placing you on Blackhawk Rd. If, for some reason, Blackhawk Rd. was closed at this location, your secondary exit would be to continue through Main Gate. For those residing on the streets highlighted in pink, your exit point would be Main Gate. For residents whose streets are highlighted in gold, your exit point would be Hansen Gate (south end of Blackhawk Meadow Dr.). Residents in Hidden Oaks, Tennis Villas, Saddleback, Oakridge, Silver Oaks and Silver Maple would utilize the sole gate for their community as their exit point. Reminder for Those Who Ride E-Bikes: Below are a few reminders of the rules for riders. 1.

Wear a helmet if under 18 years of age (Class 3 bikes require a helmet regardless of age).

2.

Come to a COMPLETE STOP at all stop signs.

3.

Ride with the direction of traffic.

4.

Always stay to the farthest right portion of the roadway.

5.

Riders of Class 3 bikes must have a valid driver’s license. As a reminder, Class 1 and 2 bikes are those with engines that provide a max speed of 20 mph (with or without pedal assist). A Class 3 bike has an engine that provides a max speed of 28 mph.

Parents of minor children, please make sure your child is adhering to these laws and is riding only a Class 1 or 2 e-bike if unlicensed. By educating your child, this will help lower the number of violations, keeping your child and this community safe. Blackhawk deputies will be looking out for the above listed violations and will be citing them when warranted.

Wine, Food, Golf & Fun

A Must-Do Napa Experience: Faust Wines in Coombsville By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990, Photo by MJ McColgan

W

e recently had the pleasure of visiting Faust Wines, and it was nothing short of unforgettable. These high-quality wines truly highlight what makes the Coombsville AVA such a gem within Napa Valley. Faust is part of the Huneeus Vintners portfolio, which also includes the acclaimed Quintessa. The tasting room, known as Faust Haus, is located in a beautifully restored 1870s Victorian mansion that blends history, architecture, and storytelling into every sip. The mansion’s opulent interior design nods to its namesake—Dr. Faustus, the legendary literary figure who made a pact with the devil. Outside, guests can relax on a shaded patio that overlooks stunning terraced vineyards—a perfect setting for savoring their incredible wines. And for those intrigued by the supernatural, Faust Haus has a spooky side: its speakeasy-style lower level is said to be haunted by three spirits—August, Joanna, and Mary. August was fond of whiskey, and to this day, a bottle of Jameson is kept open in his honor. Our host, Casey, was both knowledgeable and energetic, guiding us through the wines and expertly paired snacks. The tasting began

on a crisp, clear Napa morning with the 2024 Sauvignon Blanc, a bright and refreshing start enjoyed on the patio. Next, we moved into a side-by-side tasting of the 2021 Hour Syrah and the 2021 Lure Merlot. The Merlot was a standout—we loved it so much we brought a bottle home to Danville to share with friends. To conclude, we tasted the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Pact and the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Library Pact. Both were outstanding, but the 2022 Pact in particular won us over, and we left with two bottles to remember the experience. Final Verdict: Faust Wines is a must-add to your Napa Valley itinerary. From its enchanting setting and captivating history to its spectacular wines, Faust offers an experience that wine lovers won’t soon forget. Treetops Smith Signature Course By Chuck Fox, Owner, Quintessential Golf, Resident since 2012

Small Greens

Above the Pines: A Golfer’s Journey Through Treetops Resort

There’s a moment every golfer lives for—a hush before the swing, the sweet connection of club and ball, and a long, soaring drive framed against a canvas of green and sky. At Treetops Resort in Gaylord, Michigan, those moments are not the exception—they’re the standard. Over 1,500 acres of rolling forest, elevation changes, and meticulously crafted fairways await at this northern Michigan haven. For passionate players, Treetops isn’t just a golf resort— it’s a pilgrimage site. With five championship-caliber courses, Treetops has rightly earned its place among the elite, recognized seven times with Golf Magazine’s prestigious Silver Medal Award. A Legacy Rooted in Vision

Treetops’ origins are humble, its history as rich as the fairways it now boasts. Back in 1954, a visionary named Ouellette “Lin” Meade opened Sylvan Knob Ski Area. It was Michigan’s answer to the call of winter sports. But everything changed in 1983 when Harry Melling—then-owner of a Michigan-based tool company— acquired the ski hill. His intention? To create a world-class ski resort. What Melling understood early on was that to sustain year-round excellence, the resort needed more than just snow. It needed green. It needed golf. So, he turned to a titan—Robert Trent Jones, Sr., whose name is etched into the design of over 450 golf courses across the globe. One walk with Jones through the undulating terrain of northern Michigan, and the vision crystallized. Standing atop what is now the sixth tee of the Masterpiece Course, Jones beheld the sweeping vista of the Pigeon River Valley and simply said, “Call it Treetops.” The name stuck. The legacy began.

Tree Lined

The Full Resort Experience

Today, Treetops is more than a golf destination—it’s a comprehensive resort experience. From fly-fishing and horseback riding to spa treatments and mountain biking, there’s something for every member of the family. The lodging ranges from classic hotelstyle rooms near the central lodge to spacious chalets and cottages perfect for groups. Three restaurants, outstanding service, and a wide array of amenities ensure every stay feels both luxurious and relaxed— whether you’re hitting the slopes in winter or the back nine in July. The Courses: A Symphony in Five Movements

Treetops offers five distinct courses, each a masterpiece. The original Robert Trent Jones, Sr. Masterpiece course lies adjacent to the main resort, while the remaining four—Rick Smith’s Signature and Tradition courses, Tom Fazio’s Premier, and the celebrated Threetops Par-3—reside at Treetops North, a short five-mile drive away. Of all the courses, my personal favorite—perhaps the crown jewel—is the Smith Signature Course.

30

AUGUST 2025

Designed by Rick Smith—PGA Tour swing coach to legends like Phil Mickelson—the Signature Course was Smith’s first full 18-hole creation after the phenomenal success of Threetops. It’s clear he poured his heart into every detail. The Smith Signature: Elegance in Elevation

Walking the Smith Signature feels like stepping into a private woodland cathedral. Each hole is carved into dense hardwood forest, and the isolation adds a serene, almost sacred quality to the round. Towering maple, spruce, and beech trees surround you, and from the elevated tees, the views stretch for miles across Michigan’s northern canopy. Locals often cite this course as their favorite—and for good reason. It’s the most photographed of the Treetops five, and once you stand on the back tee at the par-5 fourth, with the valley opening before you, you’ll understand why. The design is thoughtful, with generous yet contoured fairways. Drives need to be well-placed—mere distance won’t cut it here. Many fairways feature bunkers that are either strategically challenging or placed as visual misdirection. Either way, they influence every decision. The greens, true to Smith’s style, are often multi-tiered. Landing on the wrong section turns routine two-putts into nervy lag fests. Precision matters.

Expansive Views

Quintessential Golf (https://www.quintessentialgolf.com) A source of golf travel inspiration, Quintessential Golf online magazine spotlights the most spectacular, enduring and scenic courses, resorts and golf adventures. Written from a players point-of-view, articles include magnificent high-resolution course images. Brought to you by Chuck Fox, single-digit golfer, writer and photographer based in Danville, California, he is fulfilling his passion and dream to play, photograph and share the romance and beauty of golf throughout North America.

One detail worth noting: the ninth hole doesn’t return to the clubhouse. But fear not—a well-stocked halfway house just off the tenth tee ensures you’re never far from refreshment. A Golfer’s Playground

Ultimately, the Signature Course strikes that rare balance: it’s challenging without being punishing, scenic without distracting, and fun without sacrificing strategy. Every round feels like an adventure. Every hole tells a story. For players who crave variety and crave it with elegance, Treetops is a sanctuary. It’s where golf lives not only in the game but in the land, the air, and the spirit of every player who steps onto the tee box. And for those of us lucky enough to have walked its fairways, it’s a place we return to—in memory, in conversation, and, whenever possible, in person. If You Go: • Course Info - Treetops Resort Golf comprises five golf courses.

A Fun Afternoon at Hawaii Fluid Art By Austin Scott, Diablo Vista Middle School

M

y mom and I recently visited Hawaii Fluid Art in Danville, which is right next to the Blackhawk Safeway. The studio is really big and looks amazing. It’s a place where you can make your own art, even if you’re not usually very artistic. I painted a colorful picture that they called a river technique, and my mom painted a charcuterie board (it’s like a board you serve snacks on, but she painted the actual board). The staff were super friendly and showed us exactly how to do the art projects. It was actually easy to follow, and I had a lot of fun. They also offer summer camps and birthday parties, so it’s a cool place to hang out with your friends or celebrate something special. I think it’s the perfect place to make a memory and create something you can keep. I’d definitely recommend Hawaii Fluid Art if you want to try something creative and fun in Danville!

Postcards from a Slower Summer: Kauai in Stillness and Color By Sonia Lamba, Resident since 2015 | Images by Sonia Lamba

B

ack for another year, I let Kauai slow me down in all the right ways. These postcards hold quiet moments from beaches, hills, canyons, sunsets, blooms, and creatures—a season seen up close, without hurry.

Sonia Lamba Photographer and videographer capturing the quiet beauty of nature, travel, and everyday life. After a career in finance, I’ve embraced a long-held creative passion—turning moments into visual stories through both images and motion. Based in scenic Blackhawk, California, I find inspiration both close to home and wherever my travels take me. I’ve been writing for the magazine since 2017, sharing stories through words and imagery—from Blackhawk to far beyond. I hope you enjoy them, and I always welcome your thoughts or ideas. Padis Jewelry Repeats as “Best Jewelry Store” in SFGATE’s Best of the Bay Area Awards 2025 By Steve Padis, Padis Jewelry

T

he ballots are in—and once again, Bay Area voters have spoken loud and clear: Padis Jewelry is the community’s choice for Best Jewelry Store in SFGATE’s Best of the Bay Area Awards 2025. For the second consecutive year, we’re honored to receive this deeply meaningful distinction, made all the more special because it comes directly from you—our cherished clients, friends, and neighbors.

A Bigger Year, A Bigger Honor This year’s competition was more spirited than ever. More than 156,000 votes were cast across all categories—up from 142,000 in 2024—demonstrating the growing passion locals have for celebrating their favorite Bay Area businesses. With so many deserving nominees in the mix, it’s a humbling reminder of how lucky we are to be part of a community that values trust, quality, and legacy.

A Golden Milestone: 51 Years of Padis This exciting win also coincides with a major milestone: 51 years in business. Since our founder, Steve Padis, began stringing beads and setting stones on Telegraph Avenue back in 1974, Padis Jewelry has remained proudly family-owned and operated. We’ve grown thoughtfully over the decades—now with five showrooms across the Bay Area and Napa—yet we’ve never lost sight of what matters most: integrity, craftsmanship, and creating meaningful experiences for our clients. At Padis, we believe jewelry is far more than just adornment. It’s a tangible memory, a personal story, a lasting legacy. That belief continues to shape everything we do. “Every guest who walks through our doors should feel like they’re part of our family,” says Alexis Padis, President of Padis Jewelry. “Winning this award again tells us that this philosophy still resonates—and it inspires us to keep reaching for even higher standards.”

Why the Community Keeps Coming Back We often hear from our clients that there’s something refreshingly different about Padis—and we think it comes down to a few core principles: •

A No-Pressure, Commission-Free Experience Our welcoming, educational environment is led by a team that’s been with us for decades. They’re passionate about sharing knowledge, not making a sale.

•

Instant Diamond Viewings With full-time GIA-trained gemologists and expert bench jewelers on-site, we can walk you through the process in real time—no need to wait weeks for stones to be sent back and forth.

•

Transparent, Honest Pricing Every item is clearly tagged with straightforward pricing— no surprises, no gimmicks. We believe buying fine jewelry should feel joyful, not stressful.

•

A Remarkable, Ready-to-Go Selection Unlike many jewelers, we own our inventory. That means we can offer an unmatched variety of diamonds and settings— and many clients leave the same day with the perfect piece in hand.

•

Deep Roots in the Community Giving back is central to who we are. From supporting countless local schools, churches, and hospitals to granting wishes through Make-A-Wish and backing causes such as the V Foundation Cancer Research and St. Jude, we believe that investing in our community is just as important as the work we do in our showrooms. When you shop with Padis, you’re helping build a stronger, more vibrant Bay Area.

Thank You, From Our Family to Yours To every single person who voted, nominated, shared a link, or simply stopped by with kind words—thank you. Your support isn’t just appreciated; it’s what fuels our mission to provide the highest level of excellence and integrity in everything we do. This award isn’t just a title. It’s a reflection of the relationships we’ve built, the memories we’ve helped commemorate, and the trust you’ve placed in us across generations. We are honored beyond words. So whether you’re celebrating a once-in-a-lifetime proposal, an anniversary, a new career chapter—or just want to learn more about diamonds and gemstones—we invite you to stop in and say hello. Our doors are open, our hearts are full, and our shelves have a little extra sparkle to celebrate this recognition. Here’s to another year of unforgettable milestones, hand-selected brilliance, and cherished community connections. With deepest gratitude,

The Padis Family —Your Family Jeweler Since 1974
