Deepti is Director of Delivery Management at Public Consulting Group, where she oversees cybersecurity assessments and large-scale government projects. One of her proudest moments was helping deliver New York state’s contact tracing solution during the height of COVID, a role she describes as both intense and deeply meaningful.

Meet Jasmine and Kiaan Their daughter Jasmine, 13, has just stepped into teenage life and eighth grade at DVMS. She’s an avid reader with a passion for history, culture, languages, and Indian classical dance. Their son Kiaan, 9, is a natural performer who loves drums, guitar, builds Legos, does karate and plays basketball. He’s in fourth grade at Tassajara Hills Elementary and already has a few live performances under his belt.

Meet the Sevaks:

A Family Built on Love, Laughter, and a Little Bollywood Flair By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010, Photos supplied by the Sevaks

f you’ve ever wandered down Cottonwood Drive during Halloween, you’ve probably felt the energy long before you spotted the lights, music, or dancing. That’s where the Sevak family has made their home for the past six years, and their joy for community runs just as deep as their love for each other. Janak and Deepti, both 44, grew up in India and met the way many great stories begin… as college students, long before they realized they were building the foundation of a life together. They were both engineering majors at the same university in Pune. Janak still laughs when he remembers how he used to come up with excuses just to talk to Deepti. Friendship grew into something more, and by their sophomore year he was so smitten he left for school early one semester just so he could stop by in her hometown of Jammu to surprise her. Her reaction said it all… happiness mixed with just enough shock to make everything unforgettable.

Family fitness is also a shared bond. This year, all four Sevaks completed the10k at the San Francisco Marathon together… a memory they treasure.

Joy, Dance, and Community Spirit If there’s one thing the Sevaks bring to Blackhawk, it’s celebration. Deepti is a dancer with the Vaishnavi Misra group, performing Bollywood musical shows around the Bay Area. Janak is an endurance athlete who’s completed both the San Francisco Marathon and an Ironman triathlon. Every Halloween, their garage transforms into a full-blown party: jello shots, food, dancing, and music that lasts well into the night. It’s their way of giving back to the neighborhood tradition that has existed on Cottonwood Drive for nearly two decades.

Home, Tradition, and Daily Life The family loves the high ceilings and peaceful backyard of their home, especially the view of the fairway from the bedroom. But more than anything, they love the shared traditions they’ve created. Every night, they sit down for dinner together,

Their first date was a movie chosen specifically for Deepti, a devoted Shah Rukh Khan fan. They spent nearly a decade together before marrying in February 2009 in India. Convincing her family took patience and time since they come from different religions, but love won out. Their wedding was everything an Indian celebration should be… colorful, loud, full of music and dance, and overflowing with family. After marrying, the couple lived in Boston for several years before Janak’s career brought them west. A job opportunity with Facebook finally brought their long-held dream of moving to Silicon Valley to life. They lived in Pleasanton for a while before eventually discovering the home they now cherish in Blackhawk. Remote work during the pandemic opened the door to making the jump, and with the encouragement of close friends and longtime Blackhawk residents Balpreet and Simran, the Sevaks found their perfect spot near East Gate.

Life and Work Both Janak and Deepti have built impressive careers grounded in technology and problem-solving. Janak works at Anthropic, an AI company in San Francisco, where he gets to live at the cutting edge of innovation, thinking about how technology can reshape the world. Before that, he spent years at Meta working on virtual and augmented reality technology. 8

no phones allowed, and play trivia or riddles. It’s simple, but it keeps them connected. They also make it a point to celebrate festivals together and to travel as a family. Their adventures have taken them to France, Italy, England, Spain, Japan, Belgium, Canada, the UAE, and Mexico… and they try to add a new country every year.

Rooted in Community Through monthly karaoke nights, Diwali celebrations, and neighborhood gatherings, the Sevaks have built strong friendships throughout Blackhawk. They speak warmly about the people around them and the support they received when Janak was ill. “We’re grateful to all our friends in the community who helped us when we needed it the most,” they shared. “This neighborhood has become family.” From engineering school sweethearts in India to Halloween hosts on Cottonwood Drive, the Sevaks embody what makes Blackhawk special… a place where families bring not just their stories, but their hearts.

Niner’s News By Fran Davis

T

he 2025 Niners Awards Luncheon did not disappoint! Will the Elf took center stage as this year’s awards presenter. Will Parks arrived in full elf glory and did a fantastic job presenting the coveted awards to our very deserving Niners. A huge congratulations to all our winners! After the slideshow celebrating another wonderful year, the day ended with a fun and creative game, a tightly wrapped cellophane ball filled with goodies, treasures and items no one knew they needed. The ball was wrapped so tightly it could survive a tornado or a small earthquake. The challenge? Find the end and unwrap it like your life depended on it, preferably before the person next to you stole your turn. Mary Porteous-Charm Day Champ and Leigh Bultman-TOC Champ

K-BOB for the Best Onigiri in Town By Joshua Yosifon, Junior Reporter Meet the New Owners

What I loved

My friend often brings homemade onigiri to school for lunch, and my mouth waters as I watch him eat each triangle-shaped rice with savory fillings wrapped in crispy seaweed. This set me on a quest to find the best onigiri in the Danville area, so that I, too, could bring onigiri to school. It looks like we’ve found a winner just across town!

Without a doubt, the egg and spam triangle is by far the best onigiri in town. It’s packed with flavor and extremely filling! If you want something lighter, try the caterpillar yubu. It’s like an upgraded California roll with rice, crab meat, and avocado wrapped in a fried tofu shell. The tobiko topping gives it a satisfying crunch!

How K-BOB was started K-BOB co-owner chef Seongho Kim worked in the restaurant business for over 20 years as a sushi chef. He and his wife Sangmi Kim finally decided it was time to open their own restaurant, and they launched K-BOB in San Ramon. Due to their Korean background and knowledge of Korean food, they chose to feature a highly selective menu of Korean specialty items. And because of Chef Kim’s experience personally managing and preparing fresh fish, they use high-quality fresh salmon and tuna in their dishes, which is unique for a traditional Korean kimbap restaurant. They put a lot of thought into their menu, choosing quality over quantity of items such as:

Onigiri triangles wrapped and ready to eat

On my way out, I grabbed a couple triangle onigiris to go. You can bet the next day it was my friend whose mouth was watering at lunch!

Triangle (their name for onigiri) •

Kim Bob (rice rolls with various veggie and protein fillings)

•

Bibim Bob (rice bowls with toppings like veggies, fish, and meat)

•

Yubu (fried tofu pockets stuffed with rice and other toppings)

•

Ramen (recently added to the menu by popular request!)

Fresh, colorful ingredients in all the dishes

Finally, the Bibim bob is delicious, and my buddy who dined with me said this was his top pick. Bibim bob is a traditional Korean rice bowl filled with fresh vegetables like carrots, zucchini, bean sprouts and seaweed salad, a crispy fried egg, and beef or tofu for protein. You get all your veggies in without even thinking about it! The bibim bob even comes with a complimentary miso soup, which went very well with the other food items.

January as a Feeling, Not a Season By Sonia Lamba, Resident since 2015 | Images by Sonia Lamba

J

anuary in Blackhawk arrives not just as a month, but as a feeling — a gentle return to quiet mornings and slow, unhurried light. Some days begin in a soft blur, with fog settling low across the paths and greens, turning the landscape into a watercolor wash. Other mornings lift with a warm, golden glow that drapes itself across the familiar hills, revealing every curve and contour with a painter’s touch. These scenes don’t belong to one season or another; they’re the moments we carry with us, reminding us why this place feels like home.

And in that stillness, certain memories rise too — like the wooden signpost that once stood at the edge of the course, pointing playfully toward faraway greens. It may be gone now, but its spirit lingers, the way light lingers on the hills long after sunrise. Whether wrapped in fog or brushed with soft gold, Blackhawk’s mornings invite us to pause, breathe, and begin the new year with a quiet kind of gratitude — for the beauty that meets us here, again and again, in every kind of light. Wishing my readers a peaceful January and a year filled with moments that shine softly, just like our hills at dawn.

LAS VEGAS:

The Venetian Hotel and The Sphere By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990, Photo by MJ McColgan

R

ecently, we had the pleasure of visiting dazzling Las Vegas — truly the “City That Never Sleeps.”

We stayed at the elegant Venetian Hotel, conveniently located within easy walking distance of the spectacular Sphere. After a short flight from Oakland Airport, a limousine whisked us to the Venetian, where we checked into a fabulous suite with sweeping views of the Vegas skyline. Our visit began with a delightful brunch at Chef Thomas Keller’s acclaimed Bouchon, one of our all-time favorites. Located inside the Venetian, Bouchon serves both brunch and dinner daily, and once again, Chef Keller’s classic French cuisine did not disappoint.

On a perfect sunny Las Vegas morning, we enjoyed cocktails, delicious food, and impeccable service on the restaurant’s charming patio. The croque madame, quiche, and frites were outstanding, and we especially loved the warm muffins and decadent desserts. After a short rest, we made our way to the Sphere for a spectacular Eagles concert, celebrating 53 years of legendary music. The band opened with Hotel California and performed for over two mesmerizing hours — a truly unforgettable experience enhanced by the Sphere’s breathtaking sound and visual effects. The following day, we returned to the Sphere for the classic Wizard of Oz show, another sensational performance that brought new magic to this timeless story. That evening, we dined at Smith & Wollensky, one of America’s premier steakhouses. Founded in 1977 by Alan Stillman in New York City, the restaurant now boasts many locations across the U.S. and abroad. Interestingly, its famous name was chosen at random from the New York phone book! The Las Vegas location, set in the Venetian’s Grand Canal Shoppes, lived up to its stellar reputation with outstanding steaks and service. To end the evening, we enjoyed a soothing gondola ride through the Venetian’s pristine waterways — a peaceful and romantic way to conclude a wonderful trip. In conclusion, the Sphere is an absolute “must-do” — a worldclass entertainment venue that deserves a spot on every Las Vegas bucket list. For more information, visit: https://www.thesphere.com

Re-Paving the Iron Horse Trail By Kendra Strey, Communications and Outreach Manager Each year, the Park District invests in maintaining and enhancing its trail system and park facilities to provide safe, enjoyable outdoor spaces for the entire community. This fall, a major resurfacing project brought new life to 10 miles of the beloved 32-mile Iron Horse Regional Trail, creating a noticeably smoother and safer experience for walkers, runners, cyclists, and equestrians. Originally following the historic Southern Pacific Railroad corridor, the trail now stretches from Concord to Pleasanton, connecting parks, schools, neighborhoods, and transit centers along the way. Managed through a partnership between the Park District and local cities, this well-loved regional trail continues to serve as both a scenic recreation route and an important car-free commuter corridor for the East Bay. The recent improvements help ensure that the Iron Horse Trail remains accessible, comfortable, and ready for daily use by thousands of community members who rely on it for fitness, connection, and transportation. Perfect Star Heating, Cooling & Electrical: A Story of Heart and Integrity Perfect Star Heating, Cooling & Electrical was born out of resilience and a simple but powerful vision: to serve families with kindness, integrity, and care. For founders Chris and Christina Donzelli, this company represents more than a business—it’s a testament to faith, family, and the belief that blessings are meant to be shared. Chris spent nearly a decade building a reputation as one of the Bay Area’s most respected HVAC professionals, known for his craftsmanship, integrity, and commitment to customers. In 2012, he co-founded a company that grew to nearly $10 million in revenue, and grew into a large, well-established operation. But in 2016, an unexpected and deeply challenging turn of events changed everything. Overnight, the security they had built was gone. “I couldn’t believe what was happening,” Chris recalls. “We lost income, health coverage, even our vehicles. I started to feel defeated.” That feeling didn’t last long. Christina reminded him of who he was—and what they could build together. “We founded this company with the freedom to help people whenever they needed us, without limitations,” Christina shares. “Even though it was scary, I believed in Chris and supported him every step.” From that moment, Perfect Star was born. Christina named the company, and together they shaped a vision rooted in family values and community care. From the start, Perfect Star wasn’t just about heating and cooling—it was about giving back. Their Perfect Star Gives Back program reflects their commitment to supporting local families and community initiatives. “Being able to give back to the people who give so much to us… that is the greatest reward of all,” Christina says. Chris’s passion for the trade runs deep. “I have a passion for the comfort business, and for keeping people comfortable,” he says with a smile. “When I walk into a home and help someone feel comfortable again, I feel

like Superman.” But his greatest joy comes from watching his team thrive—buying homes, starting families, and building lives they’re proud of. “Teaching others this trade is one of the biggest reasons I do what I do,” Chris explains. “I love to develop people and lead from the front.” Today, Perfect Star has grown from a dream born in adversity to a trusted name serving Contra Costa and Alameda Counties. A 3-time Best of Bay Area winner, with nearly 50 employees, the company remains grounded in its core values: We Are Family. We Are Kind. We Have Integrity. These principles guide every decision, ensuring that customers feel valued and cared for. At Perfect Star, comfort goes beyond temperature—it’s about peace of mind. When you invite us into your home, you’re joining a family that cares deeply about your well-being. As Chris reflects, “We didn’t know it then, but that moment of loss was really our Alpha and Omega—the end of one chapter and the beginning of something far greater. BLACKHAWK LIVING CA 25

Pinehurst – The Centennial Course #6 Rare Pinehurst Water Hazard

By Chuck Fox, Owner, Quintessential Golf, Resident since 2012

Pinehurst No. 6 is one of nine courses at Pinehurst Resort, a historic golf resort anchored by the main lodge - the Carolina Hotel. Designed from 1898 to 1961, the first five courses surround the main golf club. No. 2 is the most well-known course, designed by Donald Ross in 1898 with a history of hosting major championships including the US Men’s and US Women’s Open. However, the other eight courses are challenging but more playable and much lower priced. We played the four modern courses, No. 6, No. 7, No. 8 and No. 9, originally built from 1979-1996 in separate locations up to four miles from the Clubhouse.

Pinehurst No. 6 is a George and Tom Fazio design that opened in 1979. The first course located away from the main golf club; the purpose was to sell real estate. A grass practice range and a small but excellent short game area adjoins a modest clubhouse. The course meanders through the typical Pinehurst forested Sandhills surrounded by smartly designed homes. Although the fairways are undulating, the consistent but gentle uphill elevated greens often have false fronts. Take an extra club on approach shots. And typical Fazio green-side bunkering adds to the challenge. No holes are awe-striking. The fairways are generous. The bunkers are large and well placed. Green-side areas often slope away downhill. Pinehurst No. 6 is not as striking as the other Fazio design No. 8. But it’s no piece of cake. The uphill elevated greens, frequent on the front nine, are frustrating to reach. It’s the farthest from the main lodge, yet only four miles away. Not as busy as other courses, you’ll find the perfect place to start a Pinehurst Resort vacation. If You Go:

Double BMW

The show had easily half a dozen Lamborghinis, a few Ferraris, multiple BMWs, Porsches, a McLaren and even a Tesla Cybertruck thrown in the mix. Colorful wraps were on display on some of the models and itasha as well. This is not the first Kars & Kabobs show the Grill has put on. There have been a few throughout the past year, including one in August and an Elite Cars meetup in April. Shish Grill offers authentic Greek and Mediterranean food in San Ramon and prepares fresh food each day. They mix their own spices and offer a taste tour of Lebanon whenever the mood strikes.

New Year, New Shine:

Essential Tips for Maintaining Your Jewelry By Steve Padis, Padis Jewelry San Francisco | Napa | Walnut Creek, Family owned and operated for over 50 years

A

s Padis Jewelry celebrates five decades of helping clients mark life’s most meaningful moments, we continue to believe that jewelry is more than a gift. It is a reflection of love, connection, and enduring beauty. As we step into the new year, many of us focus on resolutions for self-care, organization, and refreshing different areas of our lives. But we at Padis Jewelry of course encourage (with a bit of a bias) giving the same attention to your beloved jewelry pieces. Just like any treasured possession, your jewelry deserves care and attention to ensure it remains as brilliant and beautiful as the day you got it. Here are some essential tips for maintaining your jewelry and starting the new year with sparkle and shine. 1. Schedule a Professional Cleaning Just as you’d visit a dentist for a thorough cleaning, your jewelry benefits from a professional touch. Schedule a professional cleaning and inspection with your trusted jeweler. A professional can clean those hard-to-reach areas and check for any potential damage or loose stones. It’s a quick way to make sure your favorite pieces are in tip-top shape and to prevent small issues from becoming big repairs. 2. Polish and Clean for Brilliance Daily wear can dull the shine of your rings, necklaces, and bracelets. Precious metals like gold, silver, and platinum can lose their luster due to oxidation and contact with oils and lotions – or some holiday cookie dough. Give your jewelry a gentle polish using a soft microfiber cloth or a jewelry-specific polishing cloth. For intricate pieces, consider a professional buffing to restore that mirror-like finish. 3. Organize and Store Properly The start of the year is the perfect time to declutter and organize your jewelry collection. Ensure each piece is stored correctly to prevent scratches, tangling, or damage. Use separate compartments in a jewelry box, or store pieces in soft pouches. For necklaces, hanging them individually can help avoid frustrating knots and tangles. 4. Know When to Remove Your Jewelry There are times when wearing your jewelry could lead to damage. Make it a habit to remove rings, bracelets, and necklaces before activities like: •

Exercising: Sweat and equipment can tarnish or scratch your pieces.

•

Cleaning: Chemicals in cleaning products can corrode metals and dull gemstones.

•

Showering and Swimming: Chlorine and saltwater can harm metals and stones.

•

Sleeping: Tossing and turning can loosen prongs or

chains – and carries the potential for hitting your loved one with the hardest substance on the planet accidentally while sleeping! 5. Do a Monthly DIY Check-Up Set a reminder to perform a quick monthly inspection of your jewelry. Look for any signs of wear, such as loose stones, bent prongs, or tarnishing. Catching these issues early helps prevent costly repairs or, worse, losing a precious gem. 6. Clean at Home Safely In between professional cleanings, you can keep your jewelry sparkling with a simple at-home routine. For most metals and gemstones, a gentle solution of warm water and mild dish soap works wonders. Soak your pieces for a few minutes, then gently scrub with a soft toothbrush. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a clean cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials, especially on pearls or soft stones like opals and turquoise. 7.Reappraise and Update Insurance The new year is a great time to review the value of your jewelry and ensure your insurance is up to date. If you’ve acquired new pieces or the market value has changed – like the rising gold prices of late, you might need to update your coverage. Schedule an appraisal with our American Gem Society Certified Gemologist Appraisers or GIA Graduate Gemologists to protect your investments. 8. Give Heirloom Pieces Some Love Family heirlooms or vintage pieces may require extra attention. If you’ve inherited jewelry or have pieces that haven’t been worn in years, consider having them professionally restored or reimagined into modern designs. This keeps the sentimental value alive while making the jewelry wearable again. 9. Resolve to Wear More of What You Love Lastly, don’t let your beautiful pieces collect dust! Make a resolution to incorporate more of your jewelry into your everyday wardrobe. Rotate pieces regularly and celebrate the stories and memories behind each one. Our team at Padis is here and ready to help with all of your jewelry needs both in our stores and virtually at padisjewelry. com or 925-532-7500.The Padis team is thrilled to be a part of the Blackhawk community and looks forward to seeing you soon. From our family to yours, we wish you a very happy new year!
