Dear Neighbors,
This issue is a special one—it marks 10 incredible years of Blackhawk Living Magazine! When we first launched, our goal was simple: to create a magazine that truly celebrates the people, businesses, and stories that make this community so special. A decade later, I’m incredibly proud of how Blackhawk Living has grown, and even more grateful for the amazing relationships we’ve built along the way. Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of sharing your stories, highlighting local businesses, and connecting neighbors in ways that go beyond just the pages of this magazine. Whether it’s a family feature, a nonprofit making a difference, or a small business thriving thanks to community support, every issue is a reflection of the heart of Blackhawk.
None of this would have been possible without you—our readers, contributors, and business partners. Your enthusiasm, support, and engagement have helped us shape Blackhawk Living into something truly meaningful.
As we celebrate this milestone, we also look ahead with excitement. Our mission remains the same— to keep bringing you stories that inspire, connect, and celebrate all that makes Blackhawk such a wonderful place to call home.
Thank you for being part of this journey. Here’s to another decade of storytelling, community, and connection!
We are devoted to sharing stories, events and news among our neighbors in this wonderful community. If you have a story, event or news to share please email me at mscott@bestversionmedia.com.

Celebrating a Decade of Connection and Community with Blackhawk Living
By Jo Peek and Megan Scott
Lind
Ten years ago, we set out on a journey to create something meaningful—something that would connect people in our community in a real and tangible way. Blackhawk Living was born from a desire to bridge the gap between neighbors, local businesses, and organizations. Looking back, we are overwhelmed with gratitude for all that has been accomplished and the incredible relationships we’ve built along the way.
At a time when local media was becoming overshadowed by large, impersonal platforms, we saw an opportunity to create something personal and relevant. It wasn’t always easy, but our passion for storytelling and connection fueled our determination. Over the years, we’ve seen our work make an impact—not just in print but in the lives of our readers, the growth of local businesses, and the success of nonprofits and community initiatives.

A Tool for Connection
Blackhawk Living has become more than just a magazine—it has become a vital part of the community. Every story, advertisement, and feature has served as a bridge, fostering relationships between neighbors and businesses. We’ve had the privilege of highlighting local
charities, celebrating milestones, and amplifying the voices of those making a difference.
One of the most rewarding aspects of this journey has been hearing from readers who truly cherish receiving our magazine. It’s not just about the content—it’s about the sense of connection and belonging it fosters. They appreciate that our advertisers genuinely care about the community and, in turn, are eager to support their businesses.
For business owners, the magazine offers more than just visibility—it provides a meaningful way to engage with the community they serve, fostering lasting relationships while helping their businesses thrive.
Gratitude & Looking Ahead
None of this would be possible without our incredible contributors, business partners, and readers. Your creativity, trust, and enthusiasm have shaped Blackhawk Living into what it is today.
As we celebrate this milestone, we look ahead with excitement. The publishing world is evolving, but our mission remains the same: to provide hyper-local content that builds real connections. We hope to
reach even more communities, share more inspiring stories, and continue helping businesses and individuals thrive.
Thank you for being part of this incredible journey. Here’s to another decade of connection, community, and storytelling.
Warmly,
Jo Peek & Megan Scott

Bloomers Garden Club Beautifies Neighborhood
By Terrie Gleason, Publicity Co-Chair
The Blackhawk Bloomers Garden Club beautifies our neighborhood by planting daffodils each year and has done so for many years. This past December, a group of Bloomers volunteers planted more than 3000 daffodil bulbs in the roundabout area going up to the Blackhawk Sports Complex. Our wonderful landscapers from the HOA are invaluable, digging more than 600 holes for us this year. When you see daffodils blooming in our neighborhood, know that many people make this happen! Thank you to our Daffodils Chair this year, Claudia
Merritt, who organized everything and made us all a beautiful box of homemade holiday cookies.
If you are interested in helping next year or other community service and social activities around gardening, please consider joining Blackhawk Bloomers Garden Club. Our year starts July 1 (but you can join whenever you wish) and dues are $50 a year. To join, you must be a resident of Blackhawk or a member of the Blackhawk Country Club. To join or learn more, contact Maria Knutson at m.knutson@comcast.net.
Shockwave Therapy: Is it the key to getting over chronic pain?
By Dr. Max Lippman, Owner of Plaza Chiropractic & Massage Therapy - Blackhawk Plaza
Shockwave therapy is a powerful, non-invasive treatment that chiropractors use to help people heal from stubborn pain and injuries. It works by sending gentle sound waves into muscles, tendons, and joints, kickstarting the body’s natural healing process.
We’ve added shockwave therapy to our office since January, and the results we’ve seen are fairly tremendous. Many people struggling with chronic issues like plantar fasciitis, tendinitis, or muscle strains feel real improvement after just a few sessions. We usually run 6 or 10 treatments (2x a week), and trying it with patients that have plateaued with our chiropractic or massage therapy, they are finally able to fully heal from their chronic pain.
The therapy reduces nerve sensitivity and increases blood flow, helping damaged tissues repair themselves faster.
Another great thing? No surgery, no injections, and little to no downtime. You can walk in for a session and go about your day
afterward, making it a great option for busy people who want relief without major disruptions.
If you’ve been dealing with an injury that just won’t go away, shockwave therapy could be the gentle push your body needs to finally heal. It’s safe, effective, and backed by science, making it a great option for anyone looking for a natural way to feel better.
Sessions run $80 a treatment, with packages available to save. Reach out if you have questions!

After months of playing in baselayers, sweaters, jackets and wool hats, it’s finally time to shed outer layers and feel the warmth of the spring sunshine on our skin. We have much to look forward to in the next few months with Angel Cup, Guest Day and the first Nine & Dine of the year.

HOX Head Coach Sean Quackenbush: A Lifelong Commitment to Swimming and Community
By Stacie Mihalik
As Blackhawk Country Club’s Aquatic Director and Head Coach of the Blackhawk Swim Team (HOX), Sean Quackenbush brings years of experience and passion to the pool, inspiring swimmers of all ages to reach their full potential.
Sean’s journey through competitive swimming is a testament to dedication, resilience, and passion. His training and commitment earned him a place on the USA National Swim Team, leading to competitions in the U.S. Olympic Trials, World Cup Games, and the U.S. Open, where he secured both gold and silver medals.
Family Life
Sean has been married to his wife, Natasha, for 21 years, and they have two sons. Ian, a sophomore at UC Merced, studies aeronautical engineering, while Kai, a high school sophomore at Contra Costa Christian School, plays volleyball and is active in the school band.
From Swimmer to Coach
Born in Rochester, Minnesota, Sean began swimming at age seven with a local swim team. While most of his friends moved on, he fell in love with the sport. With both his father and grandfather being competitive swimmers, it was almost inevitable he would follow in their footsteps.
During his senior year at high school, Sean earned a Minnesota State High School Championship. The following year, Sean swam on a full athletic scholarship at the University of Minnesota from 1988 to 1992, earning titles such as Big Ten Champion, NCAA Division I medalist, and 11-time NCAA All-American. His accomplishments led to induction into the University of Minnesota Aquatics Hall of Fame in 2020 and the Rochester Minnesota Hall of Fame in 2024.
A Passion for Coaching
Sean’s coaching career began in 1993 as a Graduate Assistant at Michigan State University while pursuing his master’s degree in sport psychology. Over the years, he has coached
swimmers at all levels—from high school and recreational teams to elite collegiate and national-level athletes. “It’s incredibly fulfilling to see swimmers develop skills that last a lifetime, both in and out of the pool,” he shares.
Bringing His Expertise to Blackhawk
Sean joined Blackhawk Country Club in 2015. At the time, Sean was working in Research Administration at Kaiser Permanente. When the opportunity to coach fulltime arose, he jumped at the chance. “I am so glad I did because this job has been so rewarding and fun,” he says.
As Head Coach and Aquatics Director, Sean has led the HOX Swim Team to five consecutive VSA League Championships and six consecutive undefeated VSA dual meets seasons. More than just a swim team, HOX has become a community where swimmers develop teamwork, discipline, and a love for the sport. Through the Junior Coaching program, many swimmers grow up to become junior coaches, gaining the opportunity to mentor and train younger athletes. This program not only strengthens their leadership skills but also fosters a supportive and connected swim community.
Beyond the Pool
Outside of swimming, Sean enjoys hiking and woodworking. Hiking keeps him active and connected with nature, while woodworking provides a creative outlet. A lifelong sports fan, he follows the Minnesota Vikings and NCAA athletics, especially swimming. Sean’s journey from competitive swimmer to coach exemplifies a lifelong commitment to the sport and the development of young athletes. His story serves as an inspiration, proving that passion and perseverance can create a lasting impact in both the water and the community.
If you’re looking for a program that builds strong swimmers and an even stronger sense of camaraderie, come join us at our Kick Off event Sunday, March 16th from 2:00-4:00 pm in the Lakeside Ballroom. You can also learn more about our programs at www.hoxswim.com or via email to seanq@blackhawkcc.org.
Celebrating the Heart of Blackhawk: Employee Appreciation
Party Brings Joy to the Blackhawk Country Club
By Stacie Mihalik
As the holiday season wrapped up, Blackhawk Country Club took the time to celebrate the incredible efforts of its employees with a festive Employee Appreciation Party held in late January. What makes this event truly remarkable is that it was entirely planned and executed by Blackhawk Country Club members themselves, showcasing not just their gratitude towards club employees, but also their creativity and team spirit. The evening was made possible through the generosity of over 100 club members, who contributed donations, planned the event, set it up, and even worked at the event to ensure its success and show their appreciation for the hardworking employees. It was a chance for members to give back to the individuals who work tirelessly throughout the year to create the exceptional experiences Blackhawk is known for.
The event, themed as “The Hawk Awards”, due to its proximity to the Oscars, featured an array of activities that delighted attendees. Employees walked the red carpet greeted by paparazzi photographers and enjoyed a lively photo booth to capture the fun. “It’s fun. It’s like celebrating with your family,” commented Clyde Perry, Lakeside Greenskeeper. A raffle added to the excitement, with prizes ranging from a 75” TV and a PlayStation 5 to sporting event tickets and framed Sharks Championship and Monte Ellis jerseys— all generously donated by members.
call my job ‘work’. I love what I do – keep the course beautiful for members – but it’s a good feeling to know we’re appreciated tonight.”
“I love Blackhawk Country Club. It’s been my second home for 35 years [translation],” said Jose Gutierez, Falls Greenskeeper. Steve Gonzalez, another Falls Greenskeeper agreed, “I wouldn’t even
For added fun, the night included a gift card wall pull where everyone walked away a winner, outdoor games, and a round of bingo designed to help employees get to know one another better. Dinner and dessert, served (and cleaned up!) by members, were a highlight of the evening. Kim Osterman, a member who volunteered to serve dinner shared, “It was such a rewarding experience to give back to the employees who do so much for us. Seeing their smiles and getting to interact with them in this way really made me appreciate all they do to make Blackhawk the incredible place that it is.”
“This event was our way of saying THANK YOU to our amazing employees who make Blackhawk so special to its members,” said Marilyn Suey, Blackhawk Country Club Board President. “Their hard work and dedication deserve to be celebrated, and it was a privilege to serve each one of our team members as they enjoyed time with friends and family at the Club. We are so grateful for our staff!”
Beto Armenta, a server’s assistant, reflected, “I’ve worked here a few years and don’t remember members ever serving us. It’s so nice to be on this side of the table today. I’m so grateful to be able to be here [translation].” The Employee Appreciation Party was a testament to the strong sense of community at Blackhawk Country Club. It highlighted the mutual respect and gratitude shared between members and employees, leaving everyone with a renewed sense of connection and appreciation. Here’s to another incredible year at Blackhawk Country Club!
Discover Creative Upcycle: A Hidden Gem for Crafters in Pleasant Hill!
By Michelle Barry, Resident since 2018
Looking for a treasure trove of craft supplies, all while giving back to the planet? Say hello to Creative Upcycle, a fantastic new spot in Pleasant Hill where crafters of all kinds can find everything from painting supplies to fabric, yarn, and even craft books. Their mission? To keep excess craft items out of landfills by reselling donated materials to the community.
The concept behind Creative Upcycle isn’t unique, but it’s definitely a win-win for both crafters and the environment. Similar non-profits have popped up around the country, with locations in Sebastopol (The Legacy), San Francisco (SCRAP), and Pasadena (Remainders Creative Reuse), and they’re all connected by the same creative and sustainable spirit. And here’s the best part: you can follow them on Instagram for updates and sneak peeks of what’s in store!
At Creative Upcycle, you’ll find a rotating selection of materials— at ridiculously low prices. Need some new yarn for that scarf project? Or maybe some fabric for a quirky quilt? They’ve got you covered. And let’s not forget the craft books and magazines that could inspire your next big DIY adventure. Oh, and did I mention? They hold sales throughout the year, so keep an eye on their calendar for even bigger deals.
But wait, there’s more! Creative Upcycle thrives on community, and there are plenty of ways to get involved:
• Donate: Got extra craft supplies cluttering your space? Drop them off and help keep those items out of the trash.
• Volunteer: Want to get hands-on? You can pitch in by helping them sort and stock donated goods. It’s a great way to give back and connect with fellow crafters.
• Teach: Have a skill to share? They’re always looking for experienced crafters to teach classes and workshops to the community. Share your passion and help inspire the next generation of creatives.
And yes— Creative Upcycle offers classes! Whether you’re a pro or a beginner, it’s the perfect place to learn something new and take your crafting skills to the next level. Find out more on their website: https://www.creativeupcycle.org/
Before I go, if you’re looking for St. Patrick’s Day inspo, you’ll want to check out this adorable St. Patrick’s Day party idea I came across. The article Lucky O’ the Irish Coffee Bar is packed with fun, like Irish Coffee and Rice Krispie treats made with Lucky Charms. (I mean, who doesn’t love a little nostalgia with their coffee?) For all the party details, check out the full post: https://www.artfullyalissa. com/post/lucky-o-the-irish-coffee-bar
Happy crafting, and don’t forget to check out Creative Upcycle the next time you’re on the hunt for your next big project!

Southern Dunes –Scotland in the Desert
By Chuck Fox, Owner, Quintessential Golf, Resident since 2012
Aproven high-quality course, Southern Dunes Golf Club, endures the downside of being out-of-the-way, south of Phoenix. As a Troon-managed facility, Southern Dunes is very attentive to the needs of serious golfers. Great practice facilities, a well-designed clubhouse, superb attention to food and friendly employees make this a worthwhile trip.
Schmidt-Curley Design teamed with Fred Couples to develop a course more like Scotland than the desert. It’s hard to find a cactus here. The course spans 320 acres with not a single home on the course. The course has six teeing grounds and tips out at 7546 yards. Southern Dunes has hosted championship events including a PGA Tour qualifier and a US Open qualifier.
Twelve Acres of Sand
A typical course has a few acres of sand; Southern Dunes has close to twelve acres of sand. If you get frustrated playing from bunkers, then this course might not be for you. However, if you relish the chance to think your way around a course and position each shot, then you should tackle this course. The designers were true to links golf as the fairways and greens are hard and play fast. Green-side areas are shaved allowing for chipping and putting far from the green.
There is a lot of room in the fairway, many over 60 yards wide. The greens are small with numerous large bunkers strategically positioned – thanks to architect Fred Couples. When windy, this
course is treacherous but fair. Water is available every three holes and marshals offer icy towels. In the early summer mornings, use the insect repellent provided by the starter.
Fairway bunkering is extensive. Expect severe bunkering around the greens. Although the sand is well prepared and the slopes are moderate, their size makes them hazardous. An excellent short Par4 is Hole #14. There is more sand than grass on this hole.
Southern Dunes is not in the most advantageous location. Visually appealing to those that like the links look, it’s a break from the classic Arizona desert golf. Rewarding golfers who play position golf, it’s long, and the plethora of bunkers are challenging. It’s difficult for the average golfer. They serve excellent food, try the meatball soup.
Plenty of Scrub Grass
Bunkers Everywhere

PPaso Robles Rocks: Allegretto Resort and Vineyard
By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990; Photo by MJ McColgan
aso Robles is an amazing destination, and our recent stay at Allegretto Resort and Vineyard was truly exceptional.
Our journey began at Pebble Beach, where we celebrated Super Bowl, MJ’s birthday, and our anniversary at Spanish Bay.
Just a 2-hour drive from Pebble Beach, Paso Robles, also known as the “New Napa,” boasts over 200 wineries producing fantastic wines.
In music, Allegretto signifies a lively tempo of 112-120 beats per minute.
Allegretto, a 20-acre Tuscan-inspired paradise owned by 4th generation hotelier Douglas Ayres, features vineyards, Mediterranean-style architecture, and a range of amenities to rejuvenate your spirit.
The resort offers diverse guest rooms and suites, including ADA-equipped and pet-friendly options, along with excellent meeting facilities and a picturesque setting for weddings.
Indulge in delectable meals at Cello Ristorante, serving South Asian and Mediterranean-inspired dishes paired with local wines. Don’t miss the chance to taste the resort’s awardwinning private label wines at the Allegretto Tasting Room.
Unwind at the on-site spa with holistic treatments, stay fit at the gym, relax at the outdoor pool and hot tub, and take in the serene atmosphere with art installations and fire pits around the property.
Conveniently located near Paso Robles Event Center and downtown attractions, Allegretto Resort is the perfect base for exploring the area, including the stunning Sensorio light display.
Our visit to Calcareous Vineyard for lunch, breathtaking views, and wine tasting was a highlight—particularly savoring the unique Chardonnay influenced by the calciumrich soil.
In conclusion, “Paso Robles Rocks,” and we highly recommend an unforgettable stay at Allegretto Resort and Vineyard—a truly special place that caters to all. We are eagerly anticipating our next visit!

• 1½ cups strawberries, cut into small pieces, sprinkle with 1 teaspoon sugar
• ½ cup “oat-crumbs”, divided (please see how to make “oat crumbs”.)
Place all ingredients except oat-crumbs (apple, orange juice, mango, lemon zest and strawberries) in blender. Run for 30 seconds or until smooth; chill in refrigerator. Fill glass 2/3 full of chilled smoothie, top with “oat-crumbs”.
HOW TO MAKE “OAT-CRUMBS”:
Place dry ingredients (2 ¼ cups rolled oats, ½ teaspoon baking powder, ½ teaspoon sea salt, ½ teaspoon cinnamon and 1 tablespoon honey) into food processor and run for a few seconds or until thoroughly mixed. Gradually add liquid ingredients: 2 tablespoons chilled sweet butter (cut into small pieces), 2 tablespoons olive oil and ¼ cup water, as you pulse until mixture resemble course flour (about 30 seconds). PALM SPRINGS: The Perfect Desert Escape
By Sonia Lamba, Resident since 2015 | Images by Sonia Lamba
Palm Springs was the perfect winter escape to warmer temperatures, offering sunshine-filled days and beautiful desert landscapes. Staying in downtown Palm Springs near the Marilyn Monroe statue made the trip even more special, with everything within walking distance and the city’s charm right at our doorstep. The vibrant energy of the area was perfect for leisurely strolls, whether checking out the stylish boutiques, enjoying outdoor dining, or simply soaking in the mid-century modern vibes. The statue itself was a fun and iconic landmark to visit, adding to the classic Hollywood feel of the city.
One of the most memorable experiences was taking a ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which offered breathtaking views as it climbed up to the cooler mountain air of Mount San Jacinto. At the top, the scenery was stunning, and the crisp, fresh air provided a refreshing contrast to the warm desert below.
One of the biggest highlights was playing a round at the PGA West Stadium Course, a bucket-list experience for any golf lover like my son. While my son took on the challenging course, I was in charge of capturing the moment—snapping photos of both the stunning views and his shots. The dramatic bunkers, water hazards, and iconic Pete Dye-designed greens made for some incredible pictures. After a rewarding (and humbling) game, it
was time to unwind with some well-deserved shopping along El Paseo, where high-end stores and local boutiques made for the perfect retail therapy session.
Another unforgettable experience was a day trip to Joshua Tree National Park, where the otherworldly rock formations and unique Joshua trees created a breathtaking backdrop for exploring and hiking.
Evenings were spent enjoying great food and cocktails, whether at a stylish rooftop bar or a cozy patio restaurant under the stars.
Joshua Tree National Park Fun Fact: The Parks’s oldest rocks are 1.4 to 1.7 billion years old.
A day out golfing at the Stadium Course in La Quinta. Fun Fact: The island green of the 17th hole is nicknamed “Alcatraz” because it’s surrounded by rocks.
Even the airport was a unique experience— Palm Springs International Airport’s open-air design made for a refreshing and relaxed start and end to the trip.
With its perfect mix of golf, shopping, adventure, and relaxation, Palm Springs delivered an unforgettable desert escape.

After having a fulfilling career in finance in New York, I moved to California in 2014 where my love for photography turned into an invigorating passion. Moving to gorgeous Blackhawk has further enriched and blossomed my love for the camera. I take my camera everywhere, regardless of how short the distance is. Knowing me, there is always a photo opportunity!
Tram ascends 2.5 miles along Chino Canyon Cliffs to the Mountain Station at an elevation of 8,516 ft. Fun Fact: It’s the world’s largest rotating aerial tramway.
“Marry Me March” with Padis Jewelry is Here!

Find the Ring That Will Leave Them Speechless
Choosing an engagement ring is a momentous decision—both emotionally and financially. With so much at stake, selecting a ring they’ll cherish forever can feel overwhelming. Here are some key strategies to help you make a confident and meaningful choice.
Do Your Research
Even if you think you know their style, a little extra research ensures you make the right decision. Observe their fashion choices and personal style. Try describing
them in a few words: Are they classic and traditional, or do they always follow the latest Instagram trends? This insight will be invaluable when working with one of our non-commissioned, trusted advisors at Padis.
Here are some additional ways to discover their style on a deeper level:
• Ask friends or family members for recommendations.
• Find out what kind of ring their favorite celebrity wears.
• Consider any “hints” they’ve given you.
• Notice whether they prefer yellow gold, rose gold, or silver-toned jewelry.
• Learn about diamond quality, settings, and the Four Cs.
Shop In-Person—Not Just Online
While online browsing is convenient for many purchases, buying a diamond online is risky. Photos, descriptions, and even videos can be misleading. You can’t truly see the sparkle or how the diamond reflects natural light. Most importantly, you can’t compare different diamonds in person with the guidance of an expert jeweler.
Many people experience disappointment when a ring arrives and doesn’t meet their expectations. Shopping in-store allows you to see, feel, and compare diamonds side by side, ensuring that the color, cut, and clarity meet your standards. Plus, an in-person experience gives you the trust and confidence you deserve when making such a significant purchase.
Lean on a Diamond Expert for Guidance
A non-commissioned advisor at Padis Jewelry is there to educate, not pressure. You could walk into one of our showrooms with no idea what to purchase and walk
out with a solid plan, a full diamond education, or even the perfect ring in hand.
Many shoppers hesitate to ask for guidance, fearing a hard sell. However, as proud members of the American Gem Society, Padis Jewelry belongs to the top 5% of jewelers nationwide, committed to consumer protection and ongoing gemological education. Our experienced team—many with decades of knowledge— will guide you with expertise and care.
