Dear Neighbors,

June brings with it the promise of summer—vacations, backyard barbecues, reconnecting with friends, flip-flops, and a welcome break from the school-year rush. Even if it’s been years since you last packed a lunchbox or hustled kids out the door, there’s something about June that invites all of us to slow down and savor the longer days and quieter roads around Blackhawk.

It’s also the month we celebrate Father’s Day—an opportunity to honor the incredible dads and father figures in our lives. In this issue of Blackhawk Living Magazine, we’re thrilled to introduce you to your neighbors, the Hrica family. Their story is one of creativity, connection, and community—we hope you enjoy getting to know them as much as we did.

From East Coast Roots to Blackhawk Bliss:

The Hrica Family’s Story

When Bethany and Matthew Hrica arrived in Danville, they felt an instant connection to the Blackhawk community. “The second we entered the gates, we were in awe,” Bethany shared. “The trees, the landscaping, the hills, the people out walking and biking, the wildlife—we immediately felt this is where we were meant to be.”

Originally from the East Coast—Bethany from Lincoln, Rhode Island, and Matt from Litchfield, Connecticut—the Hrica family made the big decision to relocate to California in the summer of 2024. With their children Connor (7) and Mackenzie (5) at perfect ages for adventure, and Matt receiving an exciting job opportunity at Collins Aerospace in Fairfield, they chose not to let the moment pass them by. “We didn’t want 10 years to go by and wonder ‘what if,’” Bethany said. “We wanted to lean into the adventure, and we’re so glad we did.”

The Hrica family’s story began much earlier—back in their college days at Stonehill College in Massachusetts. Meeting through mutual friends during summer orientation, Bethany and Matt had no idea they would one day build a life together on the other side of the country. “We actually hated each other at first!” Bethany laughed. But by that fall, they were inseparable. They married in 2009 with a breathtaking destination wedding in St. Lucia, sharing the day with Bethany’s sister and their close-knit circle of family and friends—a memory they still cherish, especially the hilarious moment when the groomsmen had to swim back to shore just minutes before the ceremony began after an adventurous (and windy!) sail.

Driven by Passion, Grounded in Purpose

Bethany and Matt both bring deep passion and expertise to their careers. Bethany, a Registered Dietitian and Physician Assistant with board certification in Lifestyle Medicine, runs her own virtual practice, The Lifestyle PA. Focused on supporting women over 35 through evidence-based strategies for optimizing metabolism and wellbeing, Bethany’s work is driven by her personal journey through hormonal and metabolic challenges. “I realized how many women are left without real solutions or support during this stage of life,” she shared. Her structured coaching program addresses nutrition, movement, sleep, stress, mindset, and social connection—empowering women to take control of their health with sustainable, sciencebacked strategies.

Matt, with both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Civil Engineering and nearly completed MBA studies, has spent his career contributing to projects that protect and save lives—from designing submarine structures for the Navy’s COLUMBIA and VIRGINIA classes to managing development testing for military and commercial jet engines. Now as Program Chief Engineer at Collins Aerospace, Matt oversees programs for ejection seats, energetic devices, and propulsion systems, ensuring the safety of pilots, astronauts, and commercial flight crews alike. “What we build saves lives,” Matt shared proudly. “It supports space exploration, enhances flight safety, and helps protect our country’s freedom.”

An Active Life Full of Adventure (and a Little Princess Magic!)

The Hrica family doesn’t just work hard—they play hard, too. Outdoor adventures and staying active are a central part of their lives. Whether competing in Spartan races (yes, even the kids participate!), mountain biking, skiing in Tahoe, hiking, kayaking, or paddle boarding, they prioritize quality time together in the great outdoors. “Spending time as a family outside is just as important for our mental health as it is for our physical health,” Bethany shared.

Connor, a sports enthusiast, is passionate about soccer, baseball, basketball, and is a huge Steph Curry fan. Mackenzie, full of energy and creativity, loves gymnastics, swimming, and anything princess-related—especially Elsa! She often makes up her own songs and dances, filling the house with joy and imagination.

Matt stays involved in the kids’ activities, coaching Connor’s Mustang Soccer team and currently assisting with his Little League team. Meanwhile, Bethany fosters connection within the community through The Elevation Crew, a mom’s hiking and walking group she started in March that meets Friday mornings after school drop-off. The group has quickly grown, and offers apparel that supports Tassajara Hills Elementary.

Living Their Values: Time Together Over Things

At the heart of the Hrica family’s journey is a deep commitment to living intentionally. “Our goal has always been to prioritize adventuring and time together,” Bethany said. Their move from a large home on four acres in Connecticut to a simpler lifestyle years ago taught them the value of time and experiences over possessions. “We realized we didn’t want to spend our lives working just to pay for a big house and upkeep. We wanted to spend that time with each other.”

Now, they aim to maintain that balance—supporting their children’s activities, nurturing their own passions, and making room for adventure. “Pursuing our own goals makes us better parents and shows our kids firsthand the importance of determination, discipline, and how to handle both success and failure.”

Building Community and Making Memories

The Hrica family feels grateful for the warm welcome they’ve received in Blackhawk. “It’s very quiet, the neighbors are so friendly and easy to talk to,” Bethany shared. “The kids especially love seeing the cows and playing with the kids on our street—it’s such a sweet little bonus!”

This summer, they look forward to hosting their extended family from the East Coast for a California visit filled with local exploring and a Tahoe lake house getaway. They also hope to keep fueling their adventurous spirit with future travels, including a dream trip back to Hawaii and more West Coast destinations.

For the Hrica family, life is about taking risks, chasing big goals, and embracing the journey together. Or, as they like to say, “Nothing ventured, nothing gained.”

THE ART OF

Attention:

In today’s competitive market, local businesses must capture attention quickly—whether in a print magazine or a digital ad. A well-designed ad stands out visually and uses compelling language to persuade potential customers to take action. Here’s how to craft ads that engage and convert.

▶ DESIGN FOR IMPACT

First impressions matter. Your ad should be visually appealing and easy to read. Follow these key design principles:

▷ Use Strong Visuals: High-quality images, cohesive colors, and clean layouts immediately draw attention.

▷ Maintain Clarity: A simple, well-organized ad is more effective than one overloaded with text or images.

▷ Prioritize Readability: Choose fonts that are easy to read and ensure contrast between the text and background.

▶ CRAFT HEADLINES THAT HOOK

Your headline is the first thing people read, so make it count. A strong headline should:

▷ Be Clear and Concise: Avoid vague statements. Tell your audience what problem your business solves for them.

▷ Evoke Emotion: Grab and keep your audience’s attention with keywords that spark curiosity or excitement.

▷ Emphasize the Advantage: Demonstrate the value of your offer by highlighting key benefits. What separates you from your competitors?

Creating Eye-Catching Ads with Words that Sell

▶ WRITE COMPELLING AD COPY

Once you’ve captured attention, your message should drive action. Keep these points in mind as you draft your ad copy:

▷ Focus on the Customer: Speak directly to the audience’s needs. Instead of “We Offer Quality Repairs,” say, “Fast, Affordable Repairs When You Need Them Most.”

▷ Keep It Short: Stick to the essential details. The best ads communicate value and action in just a few words.

▷ Leverage Social Proof: Consider using customer testimonials and success stories to boost local credibility for your brand.

By combining strong visuals with persuasive copy, your local business can create ads that stand out and drive real results in the community. A well-crafted ad captures attention, builds trust, and encourages action, helping your business connect with the right audience. With the right approach, your advertising efforts can turn viewers into loyal customers and elevate your brand’s presence in the market.

Fabulous Ferarris On Display at Blackhawk Plaza

Few names in the automotive world stir up passion and prestige quite like Ferrari. Born in 1947 out of Enzo Ferrari’s relentless drive for racing glory, Ferrari roared onto the scene with the 125 S—a sleek, V12-powered beast that marked the start of an iconic legacy. Though Enzo initially built cars to fund his racing team, it wasn’t long before Ferrari road cars became symbols of speed, luxury, and Italian flair. Over the decades, the Prancing Horse has charged through Formula 1 podiums, film cameos, and dream garages across the globe.

What makes Ferrari so special? It’s not just the performance—it’s the personality. Each model tells a story, blending cutting-edge technology with handcrafted elegance. The Ferrari 250 GTO of the 1960s is still considered one of the most beautiful (and valuable) cars ever made, while the 1980s gave us the pop-culture icon Testarossa with its flamboyant side strakes and raw power.

Ferrari Roma
Ferrari Testaross
Blackhawk Plaza’s Museum Courtyard hosted a Ferrari show in early May, drawing out Spyders, Testarossas, Romas and their brethren, with their rumbling engines wowing would-be drivers.

Niner’s News

The 4th annual Angel Cup was held on May 1st, welcoming 65 ladies to Blackhawk for a spirited and sunny day on the course. The Blackhawk Niners were proud to host golfers from Ruby Hill, Round Hill, Diablo, Orinda, Crow Canyon, Stonebrae, and Moraga. The Angel Cup is such a cherished tradition—offering friendly competition and the perfect opportunity to connect with fellow golfers from across the East Bay. In return, clubs invite the Niners to play at their courses throughout the year, strengthening the bonds of our golfing community.Members and guests began the day with breakfast at Lakeside before heading out for a fun morning of camaraderie on the course. For a $20 donation, golfers could purchase a mulligan or a bunker escape, adding to the fun while supporting a meaningful cause. Thanks to the generosity of all who participated, over $1,000 was raised for Youth on Course, helping to provide high school girls with affordable access to the game we all love. This year, we donated to Clayton Valley Charter School. After the round, the ladies gathered in the The Overlook for a delicious lunch and the winners were announced—capping off a perfect day on and off the course.

A huge thank you to Leigh Bultman, Angel Cup Chairperson, for

Shout out to the helpful husbands—Lee Porteous, Bill Bump, and Dave Davis and the Blackhawk golf staff for warmly welcoming our guests and ensuring all golf bags were promptly loaded onto carts—it made for a smooth and stress-free start to a fantastic day. Blackhawk Swim Team, HOX, Annual Fundraiser

Recently the Blackhawk Swim Team (HOX) hosted its annual auction fundraiser, and it was nothing short of super! With this year’s superhero theme, parents and supporters of the HOX gathered at Blackhawk Country Club for an evening of fun, fundraising, and community.

Guests mingled over a delicious pasta bar while bidding on exciting auction items like:

• Private training sessions with HOX coaches

• Buy-in parties like a kids’ movie and sundae night

• VIP cabana spots during meets

• And premium swim meet parking spots

Adding to the magic of the night, the HOX were honored to welcome Olympic Swim Coach and author Nick Baker. Over the past thirty-nine years Nick has coached swimmers of all ages and abilities, including Olympic finalists, Olympic trial qualifiers, NCAA champions and more!

Huge thanks to everyone who helped make this night a smashing success! The funds raised will help power another amazing season for our HOX swimmers. Go HOX!

Alora at City Center: A Warm, Flavorful Family Dining Experience

We recently had the pleasure of dining at Alora, the new restaurant lighting up San Ramon’s City Center Bishop Ranch with vibrant coastal Mediterranean flavors— and we’re already looking forward to our next visit!

From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was welcoming, stylish, and surprisingly family-friendly, which made the evening especially enjoyable. While Alora leans into a chic and social vibe, the staff was incredibly warm and accommodating, even with kids in tow. It’s not always easy to find an upscale spot that balances sophistication with a sense of comfort, but Alora nails it.

The menu is inspired by the diverse and fresh cuisine found along the coasts of the Mediterranean—from Southern Italy and Greece to Morocco and Spain. Every dish we tried was beautifully presented and bursting with bold, seasonal flavors.

What we appreciated most—aside from the delicious food—was how comfortable and

community-focused the space felt. Alora calls itself a “social house,” and it really lives up to that name. Whether you’re gathering for a date night, drinks with friends, or dinner with family, it feels like a place where everyone’s welcome.

Alora is a fantastic addition to the City Center dining scene, and we’re lucky to have it right here in San Ramon. With its Mediterranean soul, California flair, and inviting vibe, this is a spot you’ll definitely want to put on your dining radar.

The East Bay Regional Park District Issues a Rattlesnake Advisory

The warmer weather means snakes become more active. Rattlesnakes are native to California and occur in a variety of wildland habitats, as well as in rural and urban areas. Rattlesnakes are more active in warm weather, which can lead to more encounters with humans and dogs, especially along trails and roads. Visitors are encouraged to keep snake safety precautions in mind when visiting East Bay Regional Parks throughout the spring, summer, and fall seasons.

Snakes are an important resource in the natural environment. They are prime controlling agents of rodents and other reptile populations. Enjoy them from afar and leave them where they are found. Collecting, killing, or removing any plants or animals from the Park District is illegal. Please help protect all wildlife and their environment.

Rattlesnake

Safety Tips

1. Avoid hiking alone so you have help in case of emergency.

2. Scan the ground ahead of you as you walk, jog, or ride.

3. Stay on trails and avoid walking in tall grass.

4. Look carefully around and under logs and rocks before sitting down.

5. Listen for the buzz of a rattlesnake’s rattle warning you it is there.

6. Avoid placing your hands or feet where you cannot see clearly.

7. For maximum safety, consider keeping your dog on a leash.

What to Do If You See a Rattlesnake

Leave it alone – do not try to capture or harm it. All native wildlife is protected by law, and it is safest to leave it alone. If you see a snake, do not approach. Move carefully and slowly away or around it while giving it plenty of space.

What to Do If Bitten by a Snake

1. If bitten by a rattlesnake, stay calm and have someone call 911. Remain calm by lying down with the affected limb lower than the heart. Getting medical attention quickly is critical - do not use tourniquets, “sucking,” or snake bite kits. If you are by yourself, walk calmly to the nearest source of help to dial 911. Do not run.

2. If bitten by any other type of snake, wash the wound with soap and water or an antiseptic and seek medical attention.

3. If you are unsure what kind of snake bit you, check the bite for two puncture marks (in rare cases one puncture mark) associated with intense, burning pain. This is typical of a rattlesnake bite. Other snakebites may leave multiple teeth marks without associated burning pain.

4. You do not need to identify the specific type of rattlesnake to receive the correct antivenom. The Northern Pacific rattlesnake is the species found in East Bay Regional Parks.

Additional information is available at ebparks.org/safety/ wildlife-encounters.

SENSORIO: World Famed Light Art Show in Paso Robles

We recently had the opportunity to experience Sensorio in Paso Robles. The breath-taking experience is a blending of art, technology, and nature and a wonderful way to enjoy an evening beginning at dusk.

Featured in the New York Times as #6 in “50 Places to Visit in 2020,” Light at Sensorio features two exhibits by artist Bruce Munro. Field of Light is a 15-acre walk-through experience. Munro’s largest artwork to date, comprised of more than 58,800 stemmed spheres lit by fiber optics, gently illuminating the landscape in subtle blooms of color that describe the undulating landscape. The newest installation, Light Towers celebrates Paso Robles’ extensive wine country, featuring 69 towers composed of more than 17,000 wine bottles, illuminated with glowing optic fibers whose colors dance to an inspiring musical score. Powered by solar, these stunning exhibits captivate visitors, inviting them to engage with the landscape and environment through a light based sculptural experience. Smithsonian Magazine has called Munro’s art “stunning,” while The Guardian noted “This is art you feel,

rather than art you view.”

This art experience is worth visiting on its own, but Paso Robles has much more to offer. The wine tasting experiences are very fun as well as interesting. Vintners take advantage of the freedom to blend many different varietals to create noteworthy wine.

We had the opportunity to enjoy wine tasting at several outstanding wineries. Our favorite wines included McPrice Meyers, Herman Story, Rava and Calcareous. We also enjoyed the views and landscape at Daou.

We highly recommend a 2 day or more jaunt to Paso Robles. Only 3 hours away by car from Danville, it is a wonderful mini vacation. For Sensorio tickets go to Sensoriopaso.com.

Whistling Straits – The Irish Course

Located along the shores of Lake Michigan in Kohler, Wisconsin, the Irish Course at Whistling Straits offers a more accessible, yet still challenging alternative to its famed sibling, the Straits Course. Both layouts were designed by the legendary duo Pete and Alice Dye and share a links-style inspiration reminiscent of classic seaside courses in the British Isles.

While the Straits Course—host to multiple PGA Championships and the 2021 Ryder Cup—is celebrated for its dramatic lakefront setting and demanding layout, the Irish Course offers a slightly more forgiving experience. Its fairways are wider—averaging about 45 yards across, nearly double the width of the Straits Course—and golfers are permitted to use carts and pull carts, whereas caddies are mandatory on the Straits Course.

The Irish Course delivers a rugged aesthetic: windswept

fescue, steep grassy dunes, deep pot bunkers, and large undulating greens create a dramatic and engaging layout. Though it doesn’t run directly along the shoreline like the Straits Course, the Irish offers selected lake views, especially on the back nine, and features more inland water—seven holes bring lakes into play, including the striking par-3 2nd and the risk-reward par-4 17th.

From the moment you step onto the first tee, the course feels impressive yet playable. With fairways often stretching 40 to 45 yards wide, golfers can swing confidently without fearing punishment on every miss. The routing provides variety and change in direction, keeping you on your toes. While the wind off the lake adds challenge, the generous landing areas, open approaches, and multiple shot options around the greens make it enjoyable for players of all skill levels.

Whistling Straits is part of Destination Kohler, a world-class golf and hospitality destination developed by the Kohler Company.

Unusual Inland Water
World’s Narrowest Bunker

Founded in 1873 by John Michael Kohler, the company expanded into luxury hospitality with The American Club, now a five-star resort at the heart of the Village of Kohler. Whistling Straits, opened in 1998, followed the earlier success of nearby Blackwolf Run, solidifying Kohler’s status as one of America’s premier golf destinations.

Golf Magazine ranks the Irish Course among the top five public courses in Wisconsin, while the Straits Course holds the #1 spot. For those seeking a top-tier golf experience without the premium price tag of the Straits, the Irish Course delivers an outstanding alternative at a fraction of the cost.

If You Go:

• Course Info - Whistling Straits includes two eighteen-hole golf courses, the Straits and the Irish. The original Kohler golf complex near the American Club is Blackwolf Run with two eighteen hole golf courses, the River and Meadow Valleys.

• Location - Sheboygan, Wisconsin. One and one-half hour north of Milwaukee General Mitchel airport. One hour east of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Nine miles northeast of the Village of Kohler. Google Maps Link

• Lodging - The American Club, Kohler, is the primary resort lodging.

Royal Classic Tuna Salad

Serve 2: You need 3-inch round ring

Salad Ingredients:

• 6 ounces fresh tuna, cut into small pieces, chopped

• ¼ cup red onion, chopped

• ¼ cup of celery, chopped

• ¼ cup radishes, chopped

• 1 cup cucumber, diced

• 1 avocado, diced

• 2 teaspoons zest of 1 lemon

• 2 teaspoons of chives

• 2 teaspoons cilantros green leaves, chopped

Salad Dressing:

• ¼ cup olive oil

• ¼ cup juice of 1 lemon

• 2 tablespoons vinegar

• 1 teaspoon brown sugar

• ½ teaspoon sea salt and ¼ teaspoon black pepper, OR to taste

Garnish: 1 cucumber, thinly lengthwise sliced, and 2 heads of green onion

Salad: In a medium bowl combine and gently mix salad ingredients (tuna, onion, celery, radishes, cucumber, avocado, lemon zest, cilantro and chives).

In a small bowl mix salad dressing (olive oil, lemon juice, vinegar, sugar, salt and black pepper.) Sprinkle this on salad and mix gently.

With a few thin cucumber slices arrange the bottom of serving plate and place your ring in the middle of your plate. Spoon the salad mixture into the ring and fill in the ring to create a firm shape and then remove the ring from the plate. With long thin cucumbers, wrap the perimeter of the salad and garnish with onion. Enjoy.

Note 1: for fresh tuna salad, you may use wild tuna fish albacore tuna or yellowfin, also known as ahi tuna (ahi tuna is renowned for its vibrant deep red color especially when it is raw and with its unique flavor).

Note 2: Albacore is an excellent choice, it is known for its mild and firm texture.

Note 3: Radishes in the salad adds a nice peppery crunch and refreshing flavor that can complement the tender tuna.

Note 5: Place a ring in the middle of your plate. Fill in the ring with tuna salad to create a nice and firm shape. Remove the ring and garnish the top with chives.

Golden Threads of Spring: California’s Tapestry in Bloom

Golden threads weave through California’s spring tapestry, painting the landscape with bursts of mustard yellow. In Paso Robles, the sun-soaked hills are awash with vibrant blooms, spilling like sunlight over rolling vineyards and open fields. It’s a landscape that feels almost endless, stretching far and wide with nature’s effortless brushstrokes. Further north, Napa’s fog-kissed vineyards embrace the season with a subtler touch— mustard flowers peek through the morning mist, delicate yet bold, dotting the vines with flickers of gold. There, the contrast between the lush green vines and the wild mustard blossoms is a testament to spring’s quiet resilience, unfurling even through the fog’s lingering grip.

In San Francisco, spring finds its stage against the iconic backdrop of the Golden Gate Bridge. As the sun dips low, the bridge glows under a fiery sunset, framed by clusters of mustard blooms that dot the hillside. It’s a fleeting sight—one where light, landscape, and wild blossoms converge in a moment of perfect harmony. Three places, one season—wild, resilient, and fleeting. A reminder that even in shifting light and weather, spring finds a way to bloom, painting California’s landscapes with its golden threads year after year.

We’re Here to Help You Find the Perfect Gift for Dads & Grads

Father’s Day and Graduation season offer the perfect moments to celebrate the fathers and young achievers in our lives— whether they’re guiding with strength and wisdom or stepping boldly into their next chapter. For me, celebrating Father’s Day reminds me of the incredible role models in my own life, and watching our children and grandchildren reach milestones like graduations fills me with pride and joy.

Each year at Padis Jewelry, we feel honored to be part of your meaningful celebrations—this time of year is especially rewarding as we help customers find gifts that capture the emotion and significance of the occasion. Whether you’re honoring Dad on June 15th or congratulating a graduate, we’re here to help you select a gift they’ll remember forever.

Here are a few thoughtful ideas to inspire your gift-giving this season:

Timeless Watches

A watch is more than a gift—it’s a symbol of achievement, growth, and style. Whether you’re celebrating a father who’s always been there or a grad stepping confidently into the future, a luxury timepiece is a lasting reminder of this important moment.

From classic Swiss brands to sleek, modern designs, we carry a wide selection of watches that suit any personality and lifestyle. For grads, think youthful and versatile. For dads, go with bold and distinguished. Either way, you’ll be giving a gift that lasts a lifetime—and never goes out of style.

Custom Engraving

Personal touches make all the difference. Celebrate Dad with a bracelet or pendant engraved with a special message, date, or the names of his children.

For grads, commemorate their big day with coordinates of their alma mater, a motivational quote, or their graduation year on a piece they can carry with pride. Custom jewelry transforms a thoughtful gesture into a one-of-a-kind keepsake.

Cufflinks & Men’s Jewelry

Help Dad or your grad elevate their style with our collection of men’s jewelry and accessories. Cufflinks, ID bracelets, dog tags, and signet rings make timeless, stylish gifts that mark the moment with subtle sophistication.

And with our engraving services, these pieces become even more personal.

Diamond Studs or Chain Necklaces

For grads of any gender, a pair of diamond studs or a sleek gold chain can be the perfect “grown-up” gift—symbolizing independence and a new chapter ahead.

These are gifts they can wear into job interviews, weddings, or special occasions throughout life. We offer lab-grown and natural diamonds in all styles and budgets, and our team is here to help you pick the right fit.

Thanks for reading our Dads & Grads Gift Guide from Padis Jewelry!

This list is just a starting point—our showrooms in San Francisco, Walnut Creek, and Napa are full of stunning gift options for all the special people in your life. Our in-store selection is broader than what you’ll find online, so come by to explore the full range of options.
