The holidays are a time for honoring traditions: tree lighting ceremonies, giving to those less fortunate, and pretending to love your aunt’s famous fruit cake. But it’s also a time for forging new traditions. Signing up for a charity run? Traveling to a new destination? Don’t be afraid to shake things up—the end of the year, and the beginning of a new decade is when legends are made. This month’s community calendar is filled with fun ideas on how to make this year’s holiday celebrations memorable. And this month’s featured Blackhawk cover story features the Wilcox Family. On behalf of all of us on the Blackhawk Living Magazine team, we want to wish you and yours a very happy holiday season! Warmly,

Megan Scott Resident since 2010 Blackhawk Living Magazine is devoted to sharing stories, events and news among our neighbors in this wonderful community. If you have a story, event or news to share please email me at mscott@bestversionmedia.com.

Meet the

Wilcox Family By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010 Images courtesy of Wilcox Family and designations. He has spent the last thirty years doing what he loves, helping others with their financial planning.

S

teve and Gina Wilcox’s first meeting sounds like it could be the plot of a Hallmark Holiday movie. A local newspaper publisher sells advertising to a local business owner, and the rest is history.

While it was a little more complicated than a Hallmark movie, the couple eventually said “I Do” in April 2021. “We met around 2006, when my company did some advertising in a newspaper Gina published called the Danville Weekly. When we met, both of us were in other relationships. Over the next decade plus, we remained colleagues and good friends, as our mutual community involvement kept allowing our paths to cross. In the middle of 2018, when timing and circumstances permitted, we started dating. We dated for a couple of years and knew that this was meant to be,” says Steve. Steve was born in San Francisco, grew up on the Peninsula, and moved to Danville in 1998. “From the moment I arrived in Danville, I set Blackhawk as my goal. In 2010, I joined the Blackhawk Country Club, and 10 years later, Gina and I bought our home in Blackhawk,” says Steve. Gina was born at the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base in 29 Palms, California, where her father was serving. Early in Gina’s life, the family moved to Illinois, and Gina grew up in a suburb of Chicago named Oswego. Gina was there until a professional opportunity brought her to California in 2003. Steve received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Notre Dame De Namur. Post college, he went on to earn numerous financial certifications

Gina earned a Bachelor of Arts and Master’s in Business Administration from Aurora University in Illinois. From the time she was a child, she wanted to be a reporter. While attending college, she began working as a freelance journalist for a local newspaper. Her coverage of a tornado in her hometown led to a staff position. She spent the next 15 years working for a division of the Chicago Sun-Times, moving into roles with more responsibility. She moved to California in 2003 to launch a newspaper and radio station in Sonoma and found her way to Embarcadero Media in 2006, where she has been the East Bay division president and publisher since. Gina loves how working as a journalist and news media executive plays an important role in the community. The couple love to golf and are avid sports fans. They hold season tickets to the San Francisco 49ers, and love cheering on local teams. Giving back to the community is a high priority for the couple, and both are actively involved in non-profit organizations. Steve has served on the boards of many non-profits, including YMCA, Rotary, Leadership San Ramon, Danville Area Chamber of Commerce, and more. He is the current president of his company’s charitable foundation. Like Steve, Gina has also served on the boards of many nonprofits, including the Boys and Girls Club, Axis Community Health, and the San Ramon Chamber, where she was chair in 2018. Gina was also vice-chair of the Sonoma County Commission on Human Rights and a member of the San Ramon Economic Development Advisory Committee for many years. Currently, she is working with a team to transition Embarcadero Media to nonprofit status.

The blended family is completed by six adult children. Chris Sankey has been working in the film industry, and recently started the first of three YogaSix studios in Southern California. Chris and Maggie recently welcomed their first child, making Steve and Gina new grandparents. Shelby Wilcox is an amazing artist, and is currently a junior at Gonzaga University. Colton Wilcox is a freshman at Washington State, and a recent graduate of Monte Vista, where he was a pitcher on the varsity baseball team. Chris, Shelby and Colton are graduates of Monte Vista High School and attended Diablo Vista Middle School, Creekside and Tassajara Hills Elementary Schools. Zach Allen and his wife, Erin, live in Oregon, and Zach works in human resources. Josh Allen lives in Washington state and just started a new job with the city of Spokane as a 911 dispatcher. Josh and Chandler just purchased their first home. Ashleigh Allen lives in Sonoma and is studying kinesiology at Sonoma State University while maintaining a full roster of personal training clients.

unless you like to travel. We are always on the go. We frequently visit Lake Tahoe, Hawaii, and Cancun, and we are crazy big fans of all things Disney. We’ve been on several cruises all over Europe, and most of the United States. We managed to have 19 family members all together at Epcot center last year,” says Steve. The family made the move to Silver Maple in 2020. Before that, they lived outside the East gate in a Danville community known as Monterosso. They both say they feel blessed to call Blackhawk home. “We love jumping in our golf cart and heading to the club for dinner. The neighbors are friendly and helpful, and we enjoy talking with them when we’re walking Sadie and Aria. We are blessed to be part of this beautiful neighborhood. It is special, even driving home each day down the beautiful tree-lined street. We love that there are children playing outside daily, pets being walked continuously, and smiling faces any time we drive or walk by our neighbors. Living in Blackhawk has truly made a dream come true.”

Two adorable dogs keep Steve and Gina company in their Silver Maple home. “Sadie is a 13-year-old Cavapoo. She is the most loving, kindest dog, so don’t come visit if you don’t like being licked and jumped on. Aria is an 11-year-old Tea-Cup Schnauzer. She can oftentimes be seen rolling on her back and being incredibly cute. She will greet you with a bark, as this eight pound dog thinks she is a scary watchdog,” says Steve. As much as Steve and Gina love their community, they also love exploring and traveling. “You are not allowed in this family Do you know a neighbor who has a story to share? Our team is excited to guide you in choosing a pet, share information about their history and behavior, and provide helpful resources.

Barry is a darling pup who is a little on the shy side, but once he gets to spend a little time with you he comes right out his shell and is ready to play! When he gets into his playful mood, Barry likes to run around and chew on his favorite toys. After he gets some energy out, he is ready to cuddle up on next to you for a nice nap. Barry has a positive history with other dogs and currently weighs 67 pounds.

Guanabana may be unsure at first but with each passing day, his trust in his human companions grows stronger! He has been on his own for so long that he’s nervous to say hello, but once that petting starts, you’ll hear the purrs get going! This guy needs a little extra love and support for him to truly feel at home! Could you be the one to give him the love he needs? Bonus: Guanabana’s adoption fee has been prepaid by a generous donor.

CordeValle Resort -

Luxury in the Heart of the Valley By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990

R

ecently, we had the pleasure of immersing ourselves in ultimate luxury and relaxation at the exquisite CordeValle Resort. Located just an hour’s drive from Danville, tucked away in San Martin between San Jose and Monterey, this remarkable resort rests on a sprawling 1700-acre playground of beauty, surrounded by the Santa Cruz mountains. Derived from the enchanting Spanish phrase ‘el Corazon del valle,’ meaning heart of the valley, CordeValle lives up to its name by stealing hearts and captivating souls from the moment you arrive. Avid golf enthusiasts will find themselves very happy on the resort’s world-class golf course, ingeniously crafted by the renowned Robert Trent Jones Jr. Noteworthy accolades adorn this course, including being the distinguished host of the 2016 US Women’s Open, as well as the prestigious Fry’s Open, and thrilling college competitions. With tee options ranging from 5385 to 7300 yards, players of all skill levels can relish in the challenge presented by this meticulously manicured course. As we played golf down the lush fairways and took in the breathtaking views reminiscent of the idyllic landscapes of Wyoming, we couldn’t help but feel a profound sense of awe, especially considering the resort’s close proximity to the bustling Silicon Valley. The indulgent experience doesn’t end with the golf course, as CordeValle boasts elegant and spacious accommodations that cater to every need. From the luxurious Fairway Rooms to the cozy Bungalows, opulent Villa Suites, and even the grand Fairway Homes, each abode is adorned with goose down comforters, enticing fireplaces, original artwork, and panoramic vistas that unfold like scenes from a celestial dream. What truly sets CordeValle apart is the unparalleled warmth and attentiveness of the service staff, who go above and beyond to ensure

Their dedication is matched only by the exceptional amenities spanning the premises, from the refreshing outdoor pool and well-maintained tennis courts to the rejuvenating wellness center. The menus boast an array of culinary delights that exceed even the most discerning of palates, perfectly complemented by an extensive selection of wine, beer, and handcrafted cocktails. Beyond the resort lies an enchanting adventure waiting to be discovered. The CordeValle property encompasses the celebrated Clos LaChance winery, sprawled across 85 acres of picturesque land. Guests can drive up to the winery, only 12 minutes away, indulging in wine tastings, attending summer concerts, or even partaking in a spirited game of bocce ball. We couldn’t resist taking home a few bottles of the Reserve Meritage to share with our friends in Danville, a reminder of the magical moments we experienced. For those seeking a respite after a day on the greens, the Wellness Center has an array of revitalizing treatments. And for those who prefer the rush of a different kind of match, tennis and bocce courts await you. Danville has a new Plant Based Restaurant: Blossom and Root! By Megan Scott, Resident Since 2010

I

ts combination of locally sourced plant-based seasonal food, an uber creative beverage list, and a colorfilled ambiance that features original art, in four unique seating areas is a much needed addition to downtown dining options. As a strictly plant-based eater for 8 years, I was extra excited to try Blossom and Root, and I was not disappointed. Restaurant owner and Danville resident Susan Virgilio has created an amazing new dining destination in the East Bay. We loved the fun cocktail selections, the masa corn cake, and the kids meals are sure to please picky kid taste buds. We highly recommend Blossom and Root in Downtown Danville.

Blackhawk Bloomers Garden Club By Terrie Gleason, VP Programs | Photo credit: Ananth Balasubramanian

Members of the Blackhawk Bloomers Garden Club are very active in serving their community! “Dig in the Dirt” is a program with Lynne Ertola, the science teacher at Tassajara Hills Elementary School, where 12 fifth grade students each year learn all about gardening and growing produce. Each student is given their own plot of land and is responsible for maintaining that. Bloomers members help the teacher with the kids approximately twice a month. Bloomers also prepare the garden for the kids and keep it going over the summer so that there is a beautiful garden filled with pumpkins, tomatoes and flowers when the kids return. The Bounty Garden is a community garden at Hap Magee Ranch Park where produce is grown for the local food banks and others in need. Bloomers members are given three beds and grow a variety of produce over the spring, summer and fall. This year the Bloomers’ beds produced over 300 pounds of cucumbers, squash, zucchini and eggplant! “Daffodil Hills” is an annual program where Bloomers beautify Blackhawk by planting daffodils throughout the community. This year the group plans to plant at least 1650 bulbs with the help of our wonderful Blackhawk landscapers. Look for the daffodils sprouting next spring! If you are interested in participating in these activities and becoming a member of Bloomers, contact Maria Knutson at m.knutson@comcast.net.

Life through a Lens

Blackhawk Holiday Magic By Sonia Lamba, Resident since 2015

F

rom Diwali to Christmas: Season to Shine and Sparkle

For the third year in a row, the Blackhawk Indians of all ages came together as a community, to celebrate Diwali this November, at the Blackhawk Country Club. Diwali is a Festival of Lights and is a major festival celebrated by millions of Indians across the world. The club’s ballroom entrance was decorated with glowing Diyas (traditional Indian lamps), fiery Marigolds and stunning peacock Rangoli (a colorful pattern on the floor) that enhanced the beauty of this festive occasion. In the midst of all this picture perfect calm, the ever so gracious photographer was continuously surrounded by the beautiful chaos that unfolded upon arrival of the fashionable guests. Traditions, tasty food, Bollywood music and dancing marked this Diwali celebration. A huge credit goes to “Team Diwali” who brought the neighbors and friends, both old and new; and the families together, in making this Diwali celebration auspicious and a memorable one, once again. Be it Diwali or Christmas, the message is similar. It’s a time to be grateful and giving. A time to forgive and forget. A time to renew and deepen our bonds. A time to vanquish the darkness within and around, with our own special light that shines and sparkles. And lastly my all time favorite, a time for those extra special warm hugs and sweet kisses. Tri-Valley Animal Rescue Giving Them Another Chance By Sue James, President

BOOGIE - EAST COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER ADOPTABLE DOG -- LOOKING FOR HIS FOREVER HOME!

Hi there! I am Boogie or Boogie Boo as some of my volunteer friends like to call me. I am told that I have heart stopping good looks and the cutest perky ears. I am an approximately 8-month-old 37 lb shepherd type mix boy wrapped in one cute package. One of the volunteers I spend a lot of time with describes me as lovable, curious, playful, and snuggly. I can be a little nervous around new people - but I am still a puppy learning about this big world so please give me a little time to use my keen sense of smell to help me warm up... talking sweetly to me helps too!

Some of my favorite things to do are explore the outdoors, spend time with my volunteer friends, chase toys (squeaky ones are my favorite), and more than anything, sit close for love and belly rubs. My friends have been teaching me commands such as ‘sit’ and ‘down’ as well as how to walk on a loose leash. I can get a bit excited and jump up at times...I know puppy antics... but with continued training and consistency, I think I will be a rock star (they didn’t name me Boogie for nothing). I am already neutered, vaccinated and dewormed and ready to go to my new home. I am located at the East County Animal Shelter – 4595 Gleason Drive in Dublin. You can see more about Boogie and additional pictures and videos at www.tvar.org

FOSTER KITTEN PROGRAM - PRINCESS PEACH - FOSTER KITTEN

Meet Princess Peach! She was brought into foster care at only four weeks old when her mother abandoned her. She was extremely dehydrated and thin and was not eating on her own. In a loving foster home, Peach was provided with the love and care she needed to thrive. Peach has been raised with many other kittens with stories similar to hers and now has lots of friends to play with as she awaits her forever home. Saving kittens like Princess Peach is made possible by our wonderful fosters and donors. TVAR’s kitten and bottle baby programs rescue kittens - some only days old - who are unable to be adopted from the shelter and place them in foster homes where they receive medical care, love, and a home setting until they are healthy, able to be spayed or neutered and ready for their forever homes

Tri-Valley Animal Rescue (TVAR) - Giving them Another Chance.

TVAR is a locally based and volunteer run 501(c)3 animal rescue organization. With our foster dog and foster kitten programs and our Dog and Cat Shelter programs at the East County Animal Shelter, TVAR assists in saving hundreds and hundreds of animals yearly in the Tri-Valley and surrounding areas. We are celebrating 30 years of saving lives with over 250 local volunteers. At TVAR, we rely solely on Public Support to fund our life saving programs.

“Pets and Vets” Foster Families

Help Veterans and Dogs Alike Submitted by Cole Kuiper

A

re you looking for a fun and unique way to give back to military Veterans? Consider fostering a future psychiatric service dog for the Animal Rescue Foundation’s (ARF) Pets and Vets program! This groundbreaking initiative pairs specially-selected shelter dogs with Veterans diagnosed with PTSD, anxiety, agoraphobia, traumatic brain injuries, and other service-related trauma. Praised for its unique approach to service dog training, Pets and Vets has been featured by Inside Edition, Fox News, MSNBC, BuzzFeed, People.com, and more. The team at ARF even advised on the writing of the PAWS Act, which was signed into law in 2021 to establish a nationwide VA pilot program to train service dogs for Veterans diagnosed with PTSD.

But how does fostering tie into all this? The first step one of our qualifying shelter dogs takes towards earning their service dog vest is spending eight weeks in a volunteer foster home. While with their foster, they’ll practice basic training and socialization in the home and attend a weekly, group training class at ARF’s headquarters in Walnut Creek (training class times are flexible for any schedule). At the end of the eight week foster period, the dog is paired with a Veteran who best matches their personality and begins advanced training, side-by-side with their new Veteran handler. After another 4-5 months of service dog training, these incredible dogs are awarded with a hard-earned service dog vest and the ability to accompany their Veteran anywhere: inside stores, on airplanes, in pet-restricted housing – you name it! Unlike many pet foster programs, ARF provides all the supplies that their fosters need, including food, training treats, toys, leashes, medicine, and everything in between. Our team is available seven days a week to deal with any questions that may arise. And at the end of a dog’s psychiatric service dog training, their previous foster family is invited to watch them officially graduate and join them in celebrating all their hard work. Veterans who have completed Pets and Vets alongside their psychiatric service dogs hail the program as “lifesaving,” “gamechanging,” and “better than any medicine doctors have prescribed.” Plus, by providing a positive future for a military Veteran in need and a shelter dog in need of a loving home, Pets and Vets is effectively saving two lives at once. With all of that starting with a kind-hearted foster volunteer. So what are you waiting for? Visit arflife.org/servicedogfoster to learn more about how to give back to those who have given so much to their country. The dogs and Veterans of ARF’s Pets and Vets program are waiting to hear from you! And if you know any Veterans who may benefit from this program, please have them visit arflife.org/veterans to see if one of our shelter-to-service dogs is right for them. Together, we’re Saving Both Ends of the Leash®.

Value Proposition

By Jo Peek

Expert Contributor A value proposition is a statement that clearly identifies the benefits that a company's products and services will deliver to customers. A well-crafted value proposition is a powerful tool for local businesses. It’s a critical part of any marketing strategy, as it helps identify and communicate the value of your products or services to your target audience. Let’s look at the benefits of a strong value proposition:

▶ COMMUNICATING YOUR BRAND Your value proposition is a great way to communicate the essence of your brand to your potential customers. What do you do better than the competition? It’s important for your business to stand out with its own value so customers are compelled to support you. A 2017 study found that dissatisfaction and service failures were often due to misalignments between a business’s value proposition and the buyer’s desired value.1 In other words, make sure that your value proposition correlates well with your customers and then deliver on your promises.

▶ ATTRACTING & RETAINING CUSTOMERS A strong value proposition helps you stand out while giving local residents a reason to choose your business instead of the competition. Up to 65% of businesses take time to establish value propositions. Yet, according to Statistics Lab, around 90% of people don’t make up their mind about which brand to do business with before they start their search.2 If your value proposition is clear and compelling, it will not only attract new customers, but also help you keep your existing customers coming back for more.

▶ DIFFERENTIATING YOUR BUSINESS Your value proposition is a big part of what differentiates you from the competition and it helps your prospective customers decide that you’re the business to go with. If there’s no difference between you and your competition, there’s no clear reason why a customer would be persuaded to do business with you. Make sure your value proposition includes why your business is unique and be sure to include specific information about how customers benefit from working with you. The more clearly you set yourself apart from your competitors, the more results you’ll see from building a strong value proposition. Source: www.sciencedirect.com

Rolled Salmon and Sauteed Mushrooms By Parisa Z. Ambwani, Resident since 1983

Serves 4 Green Vegetable Paste: • H½ bunch kale, green leaves (remove center ribs), rinsed and pat dried • ½ bunch Italian parsley, rinsed, pat dried • 1 tablespoon basil leaves, chopped • 2 cloves of garlic, chopped • 1 tablespoon lemon juice • ½ cup olive oil (about 8 tablespoons), divided • ½ teaspoon sea salt OR to taste • ¼ teaspoon black pepperTopping: Salmon: • 2 pounds salmon fillet, skinned, boned, thinly sliced (fish fillet) • Mushroom, Sage, and Wine: • 1 pound cremini mushroom, rinsed, pat dried, sliced • 2 green sage leaves • ¼ cup white wine (organic chardonnay is my preferences) • 2 dashes sea salt To the food processor, add kale, parsley, basil, garlic, lemon juice, 2 tablespoons olive oil, salt, and pepper. Run the processor for one minute or until green vegetable paste is formed. Set it aside. Spread 2 tablespoons of green vegetables paste on each piece of thinly sliced salmon, roll up, and secure with two wooden toothpicks. In a skillet, brown both sides of salmon-vegetables roll in ¼ cup heated olive oil for 2-3 minutes, remove and set aside. Sauté mushrooms and sage in 2 tablespoons of heated olive oil for 2-3 minutes. Carefully add wine from the corner of the skillet. Return

salmon-vegetables roll to the skillet and cook with mushrooms for a few more minutes or until done. Remove sage leaves. Arrange salmon-vegetables rolls on serving plate with sautéed mushrooms around them. It is an attractive, delicious, and nutritious main dish.

San Ramon Valley Education Foundation Season of Giving Campaign By Alicia Gee, SRVEF

T

he San Ramon Valley Education Foundation (SRVEF), with our school-based affiliates, is dedicated to expanding educational opportunities for students in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District. This time of the year is a significant time for non-profit fundraising. SRVEF will once again call on donors to support public education in the San Ramon Valley during our Annual Season of Giving Campaign which will run through January 15, 2024. Every year SRVEF, working with SRVUSD leadership, selects a theme for our annual campaign. Again this year, that theme will be supporting our school libraries. School libraries play a vital role in preparing students to live and learn in a world of information. School libraries offer a safe and nurturing climate during the day, as well as before and after school. School libraries connect other educators to current trends and resources for teaching and learning. They are essential partners for all teachers, providing print and digital materials that meet diverse needs and offering opportunities to deepen student learning.

Breast Cancer Awareness By Melissa Durkee, Marketing & Communications Director, Mustang Soccertor, Mustang Soccer

I

n August, our Mustang SC Teams were provided an opportunity to sign up to purchase Breast Cancer Awareness kits to wear during the month of October. The purpose being to support and bring awareness about breast cancer, in honor of those who have won the fight, are in the fight, or have lost the fight. 59 teams signed up to participate in our endeavor! Fast forward, a very generous anonymous donor contacted the club to ask if they could be a part of this cause and pledged $30,000 to cover the costs for the teams who signed up. Their only ask was we ask the participating teams and our entire membership to join them in continuing to support this cause near and dear to their hearts, by financially supporting one of the many organizations who research and/or offer assistance to those battling with breast cancer. Here are a few to choose from if you also would like to join in our community’s efforts: National Breast Cancer Foundation INC, HERS Breast Cancer Foundation, and Susan G. Koman. We also had the opportunity to purchase Mustang Soccer Breast Cancer Awareness Fan Gear for the first time! A portion of the proceeds, $918, were donated to the local non-profit HERS Breast Cancer Foundation, hersbreastcancerfoundation.org. Thank you in advance to those teams who participated with the Breast Cancer Awareness kits and fan gear, those who have joined in donating to a charitable organization offering research and/or assistance to those battling, and those who have started new conversations to bring more awareness about breast cancer with their friends and family.

uscle car fans were treated in November when Instagram influencer Girl In The Mustang brought another casual car meetup to Blackhawk, showcasing every generation of the iconic Ford Mustang. The Girl herself, Jocelyn, drives a classic 1967 ivy green Mustang, but was also able to bring a black 2024 Mustang Eco-Boost (Ford’s term for its turbo-charged, fuel-injection engine) to the show. That was rounded out with some pristine classic convertibles, a few 5.0 Coyote engine cars, and 1980s and 1990s Mustangs. The California Association of Student Councils (CASC) By Dylan Reyes, Sophomore at Monte Vista High School

E

mpowering youth. Lobbying for policies that enhance the student voice. Gaining real-world exposure to the realms of public policy, business marketing, and financial planning. The California Association of Student Councils, otherwise known as CASC, is a California-based youth advocacy group which strives to achieve the aforementioned objectives. CASC is an organization that was established in 1947, to provide California youth with a platform to develop their Leadership skills and to directly influence decisions made within the Californian education system.

and comical icebreakers which allowed us to showcase our authentic personalities. Ultimately, I believe that these fun, interactive activities and conversations fostered a sense of camaraderie amongst our team, challenging us to fully embrace one another. While I was initially expecting our meeting to adhere to the more traditional structure, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that CASC meetings are more engaging and casual. I believe that by establishing a level of comfortability amongst our fellow cabinet members, everyone feels that they can express themselves without fear of judgment.

So, how exactly does CASC work? Essentially, CASC encompasses the entire state of California, which includes twelve distinct regions, each with their own respective counties and school districts. Contra Costa County falls under Region 4 which also serves Alameda, Santa Clara, San Mateo, and San Francisco counties. Essentially, each respective region has its own “Region Cabinet” which is composed of passionate and involved high schoolers who want to enact positive change within their local community, while enhancing their Leadership skills. Through a joint effort, each respective region contributes towards CASC’s ultimate goal: to keep the voices of students at the forefront of the discussion.

Ultimately, there are several ways that students can get involved with CASC. Throughout the duration of the year, CASC organizes several youth Leadership conferences, which serve as an opportunity for delegates to advocate for causes that they are deeply passionate about. Among the most significant of these conferences is SABE which directly connects delegates with California policymakers and legislators. Essentially, at SABE, attendees are divided into sub-groups, each tasked with the responsibility of designing a policy meant to address a contemporary issue within the Californian education system. This conference, which lasts four days and three nights, concludes with each group presenting their proposal to representatives from the California Board of Education. Through participation in SABE and other CASCsponsored conferences, delegates are given the opportunity to make a tangible difference within the Californian education system at large.

As a recently instated member of CASC, I can personally attest to the unrivaled dedication and overall excellence of this organization. When I attend CASC meetings and events, I am grateful to be surrounded by like minded individuals, who all share a common goal of wanting to revolutionize the Californian Education System for the better. Furthermore, in addition to collaborating with equally ambitious high schoolers whom I relate with, within CASC, I feel encouraged to step outside of my comfort zone and develop genuine connections. Despite the fact that I only recently joined the organization, my fellow region cabinet members welcomed me with open arms, making it a point to connect with me on a deeper level. In fact, at our regional cabinet meeting, there was a designated “networking hour,” during which we were encouraged to have conversations about our passions and what “moves us.” Furthermore, we participated in entertaining

At Monte Vista, representatives from the CASC Region 4 Cabinet recently unveiled the inaugural CASC Club. The purpose of this club is to raise awareness about CASC and its objectives, promote CASC events, and empower club members by familiarizing them with the CASC curriculum, which places an emphasis on the development of Leadership skills. For anyone who is interested in learning more about this exceptional organization, I encourage you to join the CASC club at Monte Vista.

Gift Yourself a New You:

Aesthetic Procedures for the Holiday Season By Stephen J. Ronan MD FACS

T

he holidays may seem like the busiest time of the year, but they can also be one of the best times to have that aesthetic surgery you’ve been considering all year long. Many patients take advantage of the long holiday break for some rejuvenation and self-care by scheduling an appointment with a plastic surgeon. Whether you’ve been wishing for a complete mommy makeover, a facelift to help turn back the hands of time, or injectable and laser solutions to make your skin glow in holiday photos, Blackhawk Plastic Surgery & MedSpa offers these procedures at our conveniently located practice in the Blackhawk Plaza in Danville, CA.

Reason number one that you should consider the holidays for your procedure is because of ‘sweater weather’ and other winter clothing options that are perfect for concealing any swelling, bruising, or the required compression garments during the recovery phase that generally follow a surgical procedure. The holiday season is also a great time to undergo plastic surgery and non-surgical enhancements to prepare you for the spring and summer season. During the holidays, you typically get more time off work, giving yourself ample time to heal and recover from your procedure. Then, when spring and summer come around again, you are fully healed and recovered from your surgery just in time for swimsuit season. With the weather becoming cooler, more time spent indoors, comfortable layers, and time for recovery, the holidays really are a great opportunity to schedule your aesthetic procedures. Here are some of the most common procedures performed during the holiday season: Breast augmentation is one of the most common procedures done during the holiday season. Whether with or without a breast lift, women are able to fully recover during the holidays without taking extra time off work. The results will have you ready for summer bikini season. Liposuction is also a very popular before and during the holiday season because concealing post-procedure compression garments becomes an easy task under your winter layers. The results will also be appreciated well ahead of the summer season. Various facial procedures like facelift or eyelid surgery are also extremely popular for both men and women during the holidays. It gives you enough recovery time in order to look rejuvenated and revitalized for the coming new year. If you are interested in plastic surgery or non-surgical enhancement procedures this holiday season, please contact us at 925-736-5757 to schedule your complimentary consultation today. We look forward to helping you feel and look your best during the most wonderful time of the year!

Golf Destinations

Troon North –

Monument Course By Chuck Fox, Owner, Quintessential Golf, Resident since 2012 Spectacular and Lush

Perfect Turf

T

he Tom Weiskopf/Jay Morrish designed Monument Course at Troon North Golf Club represents classic desert golf. One of Tom Weiskopf’s Southwestern gems sits in the Sonoran Desert in the shadow of Pinnacle Peak. A rugged landscape of granite boulders, sizable saguaro cactus, and hearty native plans cover the ravines and foothills. In between are lush but perfectly manicured fairways, bentgrass greens that role true, and pure sand bunkers. The Monument Course, designed in 1990, is the original course at Troon North Golf Club. For the first time, characteristics of links golf was brought to the desert, such as the capability to play bump and run shots. One gets the immediate sensation you’re in for something special when you arrive at the enormous well-appointed practice range. The turf was lush. Many desert courses are “target golf” that require precision shot making with little room for error off the narrow fairways. Some tee shots intimidate as desert seems to loom in all directions, and the fairway appears tiny. Don’t worry; the fairways are generous. Hence, this course is playable for the average golfer. One prominent characteristic if the diversity of the holes. Each hole provides something different.
