INSTALLATION AWARDS OPEN FOR

The industry's only awards programme dedicated to the installation sector is back and it's even bigger this year! The official magazine of The British Institute of KBB Installation

“It’s hard to comprehend how quickly time is passing, I can't quite believe it's August already! But with the recent sunny climate here in Blighty, it does feel like summer is really here - long may it last!
As the long days pass, there’s plenty of news to keep us all occupied, none more so than the unfolding debacle in Westminster. Sadly, it's this type of news, combined with pandemics, European wars and the rocketing cost of living that's causing concern for many - all of which are impacting the economy.
I guess it’s no wonder then, that early indications suggest an economic slow down, especially in the home improvement sector. A sector that enjoyed almost 18% growth in 2021, is set to return to pre-pandemic conditions over the coming months.

On one hand, I'm sure the industry will be grateful for a break to take stock and catch its breath, but as businesses, we should be accutely aware that these times may add further economic turbulence, although this time it's unlikely to include any sort of financial bailout from government.

My best advice to all businesses would be to cut their cloth accordingly, focus on the future pipeline of customers and consider a shifting marketplace. Back to the advice of 'not putting all eggs into one basket’ and to seriously consider partnerships with retailers to fuel a constant supply of reliable work. This is just an opinion of course.

As ever, please do enjoy the latest edition of The Installer Magazine!

COST OF LIVING WARNING
CEO, Damian Walters, warned, “The home improvement sector has flourished over the last two years, but we must not assume that the nation’s current rate of investment in their homes will continue into 2023. The data we are seeing clearly demonstrates a decline in consumer confidence, with predictions that the cost of living will continue to rise throughout 2022. Its highly probably that, as disposable income reduces, the decline we are already seeing in big-ticket spending will continue to fall.”
and savings spend in the short to medium term including the government’s plan to ban the sale of new fossil fuel vehicles by 2030. With the unprecedented fuel price affecting the pocket, consumers may choose to invest their spend with car manufacturers as opposed to the home improvement industry. We are also back in competition with the travel sector, as the world begins to open up, with 38% of consumers surveyed by KPMG intending to spend their savings on holidays versus 32% on home improvements.”
Following new research released by KPMG, which shows the impact that the rising cost of living is having on consumer spending, the BiKBBI has issued a caution to the KBB industry, with a forecast of big-ticket purchasing hardship later in 2022, as consumers begin to feel the bite of ongoing price rises.
British Retail Consortium’s Chief Executive, Helen Dickenson OBE, stated, “The rising cost of living has crushed consumer confidence and put the brakes on consumer spending. Sales growth has been slowing since January, though the real extent of this decline has been masked by rising inflation. Big-ticket items have been hit hardest, as consumers reigned in spending on furniture, electricals and other homeware; compounded by delays on goods coming from China”.

Walters added “There are other factors that will undoubtedly impact disposable income

History shows that in times of economic uncertainty, consumers will opt for cheaper, unskilled labour and therefore the BiKBBI is urging tradespeople to widen their peripheral vision and look beyond their immediate order books in order to safeguard their future.

“Our sector should most definitely remain optimistic but be prepared for further uncertainty and tough trading times ahead” concluded Walters.

INSTALLERS ARE TOP INFLUENCERS FOR CONSUMERS WHEN BUYING A BATHROOM
New research from Trend-Monitor has highlighted the influence installers have on consumers and the bathroom buying process.
Talking about the influence tradesmen have on bathroom projects at the recent Bathroom Manufacturers Association industry conference, Jane Blakeborough, research director at Trend-Monitor, said: “Our [consumer] research shows that this year, very much so, the fitter influenced the research stage, the purchase stage, and the choice of retailer.
“Ultimately, the fitter has the most influence throughout the whole process. When asked ‘who had the most influence over the products you bought?’, consumers said it came down to their fitter. Obviously, there are other influences, but if consumers were to nominate one, it was the bathroom fitter.”

These findings come as the demand for installers and fitters is at its
highest in years. Yet, despite demand, there is still a long way to go when it comes to attracting new installers to the profession.
The British Institute of Kitchen, Bedroom and Bathroom Installation (BiKBBI) launched its apprenticeship programme last October in partnership with leading Apprenticeship Training Agency (ATA) The Apprenticeship Management Group.
Damian Walters, BiKBBI chief executive, said: “The entire industry now needs to help us kick the programme on by opening up more apprenticeship vacancies. We know that installers are crying out for talent to help meet unprecedented levels of demand for high-quality KBB installation. Our apprenticeship programme provides all of the answers to this call with a fit-forpurpose apprenticeship in the Level 2 Fitted Interiors programme, a package of support to help with recruitment, and a growing pool of enthusiastic candidates. The job now is to spread the word about all that is on offer.”
HOWDENS NEVER-ENDING GROWTH CONTINUES AS MORE RECORDS SMASHED
In its half-year results, Howdens has revealed that it’s not just back to pre-covid levels, it’s gone 40% beyond them.
Howden Joinery Group posted a total revenue of £913.1 million, which is 16.3% ahead of last year and 39.9% ahead of pre-Covid levels in 2019.
The group’s pre-tax profit of £145.0m is up 21.6% on 2021 and 85.7% on 2019, with profits outpacing revenue growth. UK revenue is 16.4% (£889.3m) up on last year and 13.5% ahead on a same depot (LFL) basis.
Howdens has continued to invest in strategic initiatives, bringing forward investment in projects into 2022 with capital expenditure (capex) guidance for the current year increased by £20m to £130m. The company opened 10 new depots and revamped 34 older depots in the UK, with seven new depots in France and one in the Republic of Ireland.

Andrew Livingston, Howdens chief executive said: “Howdens delivered a strong financial performance in the first half, well ahead of preCovid levels in 2019, as we continued to manage effectively ongoing inflationary and supply chain pressures.
“Our sector leading service and well-established and focused growth strategy ensured we continued to outperform the market. Our kitchen and joinery markets are large and attractive, and we are prioritising investment in future growth through execution of our strategic initiatives.
“Howdens has good momentum going into the second half of the year which includes our all-important peak trading period. We will continue
to manage inflationary pressures according to market conditions to achieve the right balance between pricing and volume. We are confident in our resilient business model while recognising that we will be trading against record revenue comparatives. While watchful of market conditions and consumer sentiment, the group remains on track with its outlook for the full year.”
Howdens launched 19 new kitchen ranges in the first half of 2022, which it says has more emphasis on higher priced kitchen ranges. The business operates with 788 UK depots, 42 in France and Belgium and one in Republic of Ireland.

BLUM ANNOUNCES 11.6% INCREASE IN YEAR-END TURNOVER
Blum, the fittings specialist from Hoechst, Austria has recorded an 11.6% increase in turnover for the 2021/2022 financial year ending June 30, 2022.
The increase represents a growth in turnover of €266 million (£225m) on the previous year, as the company posted €2.64 billion (£2.24b) turnover. Presenting at a press conference for staff, stakeholders, and media, the managing director of parent company Julius Blum GmbH, Philipp Blum, said: “Consumers were again drawn to the homing and home improvement trend which remained strong during the last year. The demand for fittings has stabilised at a high level.

“The last business year has again proved to be a challenge due to the ongoing Covid pandemic and the war in Ukraine. This makes the 11.2% increase in turnover all the more pleasing. This year’s increase in turnover is partly due to a growth in sales volume and partly due to the price adjustments we had to make because of the dramatic rise in costs,” Blum explained.
The fittings specialist has seen a continued increase in turnover in western Europe, particularly in countries such as Italy, Germany and the UK. The political situation in eastern Europe, however, has had a “subduing effect” on markets in that region.
“We are shocked by Russia’s war of aggression on Ukraine which has inflicted untold suffering on many people since it was launched in February,” said Blum.
“The war in the middle of Europe is shattering peace on the European continent and shaking the foundations of stability. Although our colleagues in our Ukrainian subsidiary are as well as can be expected, their health and well-being are a constant concern.”
In addition to the pressures in markets closer to home, Blum’s operations in China have also had an effect globally. The lockdown in Shanghai and other Chinese cities in the spring of 2022 has created new challenges in international transport routes. Said Blum: “Disruption is being caused by the war in Ukraine and the worldwide shortage of freight containers, heavy goods vehicles, and drivers. The supply chain is still under severe pressure.
“We’re pleased that we’ve been able to greatly reduce lead times for many product groups by increasing production capacity and recruiting new members of staff over the past few months.”
In the past financial year, Blum investments worldwide totalled €339 million (£287m).
NEW MAGNET STORE FORMAT TO INCLUDE WORKING KITCHENS AND DESIGN STUDIOS

Magnet is to roll out a new ‘immersive’ store format that will include functional spaces and interactive areas that it says reflect how people want to shop and be inspired.
The new format Magnet stores, due to open in early autumn this year, are said to put design excellence at the heart of the experience and will include fully functional kitchen areas that will allow store staff to demonstrate key kitchen appliances, such as instant boiling hot water taps and steam ovens.
The new stores will also have self-contained design studios where customers can enjoy the design process. There will also be ‘styles and materials’ areas where they can make mood boards and experiment with how their kitchen will look at different times of the day.
The first three new format stores will be in South Wimbledon, Sale (Manchester) and Stockton. The programme will start with Stockton, but Magnet is also planning to refurbish many of its 194 stores this year, with more planned for 2023. Stockton will be the first store to feature a fully working kitchen area.
Magnet says that all of the timber used in the kitchen cabinets comes from sustainable sources and all of the showrooms are powered by renewable energy.
The investment follows the best ever winter trading period for Magnet parent company Nobia Holdings UK, which reported turnover of £417.3 million – up from £394m in 2021.
Commenting on the move, Nobia Holdings UK chief executive Dan Carr said: “We’ve been around since 1918 and we’re still going strong, making us the UK’s longest-standing kitchen specialist, with 196 stores in the UK and over a century of happy customers under our belt.
“Our new store format is part of our wider commercial strategy which will focus on design and sustainability and has a clear focus on inspiring better living through purposeful design.
“We’re proud to launch our first store with the new format and look forward rolling this out to our existing and new stores in the future.”

HAVE THE NATIONWIDE RAIL STRIKES AFFECTED THE KBB INDUSTRY?

The biggest train strikes in over 30 years have caused mass disruption across the country and, although resilient KBB retailers report that the rail chaos had little effect on business, the action has raised concerns it could further dampen consumer confidence.
In an anonymous poll, members of the kbbreview100, our trusted group of independent KBB retailers suggested that, though the strikes had not taken a direct toll on their business, the disruption could hurt consumer confidence. “The strikes form part of the general perception that the country is in a mess,” the retailer said. “On this basis, they will contribute to a fall-off in consumer confidence.”
Another retailer agreed saying that, while business wasn’t affected this week, the fallout of the rail strikes – which could continue throughout the year – could have a serious knock-on effect on the future. “It’s another pressure adding to the current economic situation,” they said. “I think it will add to an already increasing problem.”
While the poll revealed no KBB retailers were forced to close their showrooms or directly lost work due to clients either missing or cancelling appointments, 12% reported a drop in footfall which they linked directly to the strikes.
The majority of the retailers said that their staff do not rely on public transport, while 25% of those polled said that under a half of their staff use trains or buses to commute.
Many retailers rely on cars to get to the showroom, especially those who have destination showrooms out of town. However, some say they cannot rely on public transport in normal circumstances due to poor train links, so they are forced to commute via car.

The new Etoile Verona Cloak Vanity features a similarly styled ‘bow’ front and provides a drawer and cupboard space. Crafted and hand-finished from sustainably sourced real wood,
the it comes in three wood finishes Natural Oak, Dark Oiled Oak and Wenge, along with a range of hand-painted options like Rosedale White, Cream Haze, Grey Ecru, Stoneywell Slate, Nutmeg Haze, Henley Blue and Moseley Blue.
Its signature curved profile is distinct and further enhanced by the complementary new Etoile Cloak Round Basin with delicate bevelled edges. Traditionally shaped and finely handcrafted with ornate period detailing, all ceramic ware in the Etoile Collection is moulded from clay to present a flawlessly smooth surface beneath layer upon layer of Imperial Bathrooms specialist glaze.

FRANKE SUPPORTS HIGH MEAD THERAPEUTIC FARM WITH PRODUCT DONATION
Franke has donated a sink, tap and three cooker hoods for a kitchen renovation at High Mead therapeutic farm that supports members of the community with learning and physical disabilities, mental health issues and disengaged youngsters. The products are now part of a working kitchen, supplied by Franke retailer Select Interiors (Southern) Ltd, which will teach young adults how to cook and learn life skills.
High Mead Farm based in Ferndown, Dorset, engages members of the public living with mental health issues, physical disabilities, addiction, Alzheimer's and dementia diagnosis, brain injuries, vision and hearing impairment, autism, Parkinson’s and learning difficulties, as well as children excluded from school, in a range of farm-based activities. The day service engages people in gardening, working with animals, nature, arts and craft, learning trade skills and more to bring a sense of wellbeing and selfworth.
Franke Area Sales Manager David Terry was approached by Wimborne-based furniture retailer Select Interiors, to help kit out a working kitchen as part of the restoration of an old barn at the farm. Franke was

pleased to support the charity by providing three stainless steel cooker hoods, a spacious 1.5 bowl sink and a Valais mixer tap. Select Interiors supplied and fitted the entire kitchen free of charge to the charity.
David Terry says: “I was overwhelmed and in awe of the facilities at High Mead Farm and could instantly see how the farm offers a place of solace and an opportunity for members of the public living with a range of issues. It enables them to get away from the stresses of life and enjoy an array of activities. Franke was keen to support the Select Interiors team with the kitchen renovation and I hope the facilities can be enjoyed by many visitors to the farm for years to come.”
Peter Biss, owner of Select Interiors, says: “As soon as I was contacted and subsequently visited High Mead Farm, I knew that I wanted to support the good work the charity is doing in the area. By offering to supply and install the kitchens I could see the benefit this was going to achieve and I’m grateful to Franke for their desire and willingness to support such a worthy cause."

LEVELLING UP
HOW TO PREPARE THE SUB FLOOR WHEN INSTALLING RIGID LVT

Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) continues to be the one of the most popular flooring choices in 2022 due to its ability to deliver high design, easy installation and low maintenance. Rigid or ‘click’ LVT is particularly popular as it is faster and easier to fit than a stickdown product, however understanding the importance of site preparation prior to installation is paramount.

The quality of the finished floor will only be as good as the sub floor over which it has been laid and this deserves as much attention as its elegant surface finish. All flooring finishes require a clean, sound, level surface that is sufficiently strong and stable. Successful preparation of the sub floor will ensure the longevity of the installation and a satisfied end user long term.
Rigid LVT installation offers several benefits to installers; in most instances the need for a thick plywood underlayment is avoided and installers can traverse existing tiling and concrete sub floors. Fitters won’t go far wrong by following the manufacturers’ installation instructions, but it is vital that they take the time to consider the following when preparing the sub floor.
Rigid LVT installation offers several benefits to installers; in most instances the need for a thick plywood underlayment is avoided and installers can traverse existing tiling and concrete sub floors.
Levelling works
The sub floor should be thoroughly inspected before the flooring is installed in line with BS 8201: 2011 and BS 8204 -1:2003 standards.
The sub floor should be a maximum of 3mm from flat over a 2m span and if it exceeds this, then remedial levelling works should be undertaken before fitting the floorcovering.
This can take the form of rectifying uneven tiling, applying a floor levelling compound to the sub floor to level in any hollows or over-boarding with 6mm flooring grade plywood.

It is important not to overlook this step as any necessary remedial works can significantly impact on project costs and timescales.
Drying time for new concrete slabs or screeds
Another element that should not be rushed is the correct drying out time for a new concrete slab or screed. Depending on the site conditions and thickness, some concrete slabs could take a year to attain equilibrium. It is important for installers to ask themselves the following questions before they even think about applying the floorcovering; When was the slab poured? Are site conditions prime for the drying out of the slab? Is the building weathertight? Have wet trades completed their work? These questions should all be considered before applying a floorcovering.
The rule of thumb is to allow one day per mm of thickness, up to the first 40mm of thickness. Above this, the thickness may require twice as long to dry out. Some modified screeds can accelerate the drying process, but installers should closely follow the chosen manufacturers guidelines. If in any doubt DO NOT fit the flooring.
Check the moisture content
Before installing a floorcovering, including Rigid LVT with its waterproof core, the moisture content of the concrete sub floor should be thoroughly checked. The concrete sub floor must have a moisture content by volume of below 3% or a relative humidity of 75% or less. If moisture content exceeds these measurements, the issue should be rectified before fitting the floor. Hygrometer testing is still the most accurate way to determine the dryness of an installation.
Installing Rigid LVT over existing sub floors
Wood
Fully inspect wooden floors and secure or replace any loose or worn boards. Ensure there are no protruding nail or screw heads. Thoroughly inspect for wood rotting, fungi or insect damage and remedy accordingly.
There should be no gaps between floorboards, they should be 2mm maximum.
If necessary, overlay with flooring grade plywood sheets (minimum 6mm thickness) and screw down, allowing a minimum 6mm perimeter expansion gap.
Tiles
Thoroughly inspect ensuring any loose tiles are fixed or removed. Check the flooring is completely level i.e. under 3mm over a 2m area.
Rigid LVT is designed not to slump into the grout lines left by tiling, so it avoids the need for a plywood underlayment and keeps room height loss and the trimming of doors to a minimum.

Existing vinyl tiles

Careful inspection is recommended as early types of LVT contain asbestos. If in doubt, get the site professionally assessed. Make sure all vinyl tiles are soundly fixed in place before proceeding with installation.
www.malmoflooring.com
Any form of soft vinyl or textile type flooring must be removed before installing a Rigid LVT floor.
Products with a built-in underlay such as our Malmo™ Rigid Comfort and Rigid Senses click LVT can simplify and speed up the installation process, as long as it is laid onto a suitably level flat sub floor surface, providing immediate and long-lasting results.

THE RISE OF RETROFIT
As consumers become more cost and environmentally conscious, there’s been a rise in retrofit kitchen options, in particular, replacement doors. Natalie Davenport, Head of Marketing at Häfele UK, explores the trend and the solutions available to installers.

In recent years, replacement kitchen cabinet doors have risen in popularity, with consumers recognising the retrofit approach as a more cost-effective way of updating their kitchen. Since 2017, Google searches for ‘replacement kitchen doors near me’ have grown by 3,600% and as the cost of living crisis continues, we can expect homeowners to be more frugal with their home improvement plans.
However, cost is not the only driver. Last year, we surveyed 2,009 homeowners about their kitchen and found that choosing and buying a kitchen that’s sustainable and environmentally friendly was important to 47% of respondents. Giving end-users the option to re-use existing carcassing but refresh →
Replacing cabinet doors is an effective way to update a kitchen and to give the customer a new look – and feel.

with a new-look exterior, replacements cabinet doors can also appeal to the ecoconscious consumer.
Recognising the increasing demand for replacement kitchen cabinet doors, last year we launched Aspekt, a range of four cabinet door styles – standard slab, pressed shaker, integrated J-pull and a premium slab – each available in a variety of finishes and seven colourways. The collection also comes with a suite of complementary end panels, corner posts, cornices and plinths.
Our Aspekt colourways have been curated to reflect consumer demand, ensuring installers can provide options most desired by homeowners. In our survey, we found that white cabinetry still reigns supreme, with it being the colour of choice for 25% of respondents. Light grey followed at 17% while cashmere and cream came third.
As such, Aspekt has a wide palette of neutral shades, as well as on-trend colours including midnight and aqua blue – the most popular bolder shades from our survey. Plus, with matt finishes chosen as the preferred option by almost half of our research respondents, Aspekt includes matt, as well as gloss and ultra gloss finishes.
SUPPORTING INSTALLERS
While catering for consumer tastes, when creating Aspekt we thought heavily about the designer and installer too. Aspekt doors are UK manufactured meaning they come with a 48-hour delivery promise if ordered from Häfele before 3:30 pm, helping you to manage material ordering and job scheduling more effectively. Delivery is also free for customers who spend over £50 and there’s no minimum order quantity required.
With our research finding that 60% of respondents would seek advice from a kitchen installer before designing and buying their kitchen, we’ve also ensured fitters have the tools they need to advise on cabinetry doors and accessories with confidence.

Within our Aspekt brochure, we’ve paired each door within the range with a selection of perfectly suited handles. The smooth classic Skye door, for example, can be matched with a rail handle in a brushed black finish for an industrial look, or customers can mix a matt door finish with a metallic handle for a contemporary design. The traditional shaker styling of the York door can also be dialled up or down by pairing different handle combinations. A cup handle in polished nickel for example gives an antique finish or you can select a geometric bar design for a more angular look.
Alongside Häfele’s Aspekt brochure, installers and designers can explore options further with their customer, and as part of a wider kitchen design plan, using 2020 Fusion. In the software, users will find the entire Aspekt door range and a wide selection of Häfele handles.
A PERFECT PAIRING
Replacing cabinet doors is an effective way to update a kitchen and to give the customer a new look – and feel – it pays to upgrade their hinges too. Our new Metalla 310 hinge is a great all-around solution alongside replacement cabinet doors, giving a high-quality choice, whatever the application. The 310 is suitable for wide-angle openings, post hinges, and 30 or 45 degrees openings plus is available in soft-close or a non-soft close variant. It’s also ideal for standard installations such as common 110˚ angle openings.
As the perfect finishing touch to Aspekt, installers can also purchase VuPlex® and Matte® Maxx cleaners from Häfele UK that are ideal for a post-installation clean and for ongoing customer maintenance. For gloss finishes, VuPlex® antistatic cleaner is recommended, while for the Elements collection of textured matt designs, Matte® Maxx is ideal to create a dust repelling surface.
As replacement kitchen cabinetry continues on an upward trend, installers can work with manufacturers such as Häfele to ensure they have a strong offer for their customers, that’s supported by interactive design resources and market-leading components for a high quality finish.

WITH HiB’S MANAGING DIRECTOR ROBERT GINSBERG
HiB has been a major bathroom brand for more than 30 years, what has been the key to the company’s success and longevity?
Over HiB’s history we have continuously innovated and have developed our range of mirrors, cabinets, furniture and accessories to make sure that they adhere to our vision, of being a leading supplier of innovative, creative solutions that make bathrooms beautiful while also making a substantial difference to the lives of our people partners and the world we live in. Our dedication to product innovation was rewarded with a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2020, an achievement we are incredibly proud of.
But for all manufacturers, it is not just quality product that is needed, its excellent customer service. We have a skilled customer experience team who look after our network of retailers and installers, to make sure that everything runs as smoothly as possible. We have consistently high positive feedback from those teams and making sure our customers’ needs are met has been key over the years.
With new product development being such a big focus, what is next for HiB?

This Summer marks the release of our highly anticipated Genesis fitted furniture range. It is a really exciting time for the company and marks the next generation of furniture ranges for our HiB Novum brand. Genesis has been designed for ease-of-fit, offering units that can be adapted to suit wall-hung or floorstanding schemes, with a wide range of configurations, finishes and complementing accessories to create a complete look.
Among the options available are open and closed storage, back to wall units, infill and end panels and plinths, all available in Midnight Blue, Dark Emerald, Carbon Grey, Sherwood Oak and Matt White. Customers can also choose from a range of semirecessed and vessel basins, along with the Aero rimless toilet and a choice of worktops and handles. With the wider aesthetic in mind, customers can add a matching bath panel and LED underlighting.
Fitted furniture is often over-complicated, so to achieve the level of customisation without added complexity,

the new HiB Novum brochure has been structured to provide a step-by-step approach, taking the customer through each of the necessary components to make a truly appealing look.
How does the range cater to installers’ needs?
What really sets Genesis apart is its fitter-friendly construction. The range has been designed with installation in mind, with carcasses being delivered preassembled, pre-drilled holes and all fixings included. We think it will really benefit both installers and customers and make the whole process far simpler.
How does HiB support retailers and installers?
As well as our customer experience support, we provide installers with extensive product information, fitting instructions and technical information to make the ordering and installation process as straightforward as possible. We also have a dedicated product support team, so should any installers have questions about the product or need assistance, they can provide expertise and guidance.
What does the future hold for HiB?
New product development for our mirrors and cabinets is underway with new ranges in the pipeline. We’re also branching out into new areas, developing the HiB brand to offer more choice across the bathroom market. We’re focusing on CSR and reducing our impact on the environment. Our CSR Report for 2022 outlines our targets for becoming a more sustainable company, showcasing our efforts across improving opportunities for people, ensuring an ethical and sustainable supply chain and becoming more environmentally-friendly. It's going to be an exciting few years for us!

COMPACT LAMINATE: HONE YOUR COUNTERTOP SKILLS
Continual research and development has ensured the surfaces available today not only replicate the look and feel of stone but are just as hardwearing.

As installers explore kitchen surfaces which are not only hardwearing, but are also easy to fit and maintain, compact laminate has emerged as a viable alternative to a natural stone countertop. Here, Paul Graham, technical expert at Bushboard, takes a closer look at how straightforward the versatile material is to work with.
While the home improvement boom may have started to slow, many kitchen installers will still be keen to explore products that are more cost effective and help them to reduce project lead times. One such material, compact laminate, offers an aesthetic comparable to natural stone, but with a surface that is much more straightforward to work with.
Historically seen as a 'value' alternative for worktops, continual research and development has ensured the surfaces available today not only replicate the look and feel of stone but are just as hardwearing.
→

Created by compressing layers of decorative paper and resin to form a non-porous core, the surfaces are then sealed for a watertight and non-abrasive finish. Surfaces such as Bushboard’s Zenith range are among the most economical options for kitchen worktops that offer greater design freedom than their stone counterparts.

Compact laminate, offers an aesthetic comparable to natural stone, but with a surface that is much more straightforward to work with.
Creating the perfect bond
Tooling and planning
While stone or marble worktops require specialist tools, no specialist tools are needed to cut and fit a compact laminate worksurface to a high standard needn’t be quite so specialist. One piece of technical advice that is always worth considering, however, is that if your plunge saw with router has a speed regulator, it is always advisable to reduce it to half speed when working with compact laminate.
Before cutting to size, it is vital to ensure no joints in the laminate surface extend across any oven or sink cut-out areas and joints should always be supported from below. When cutting, it's best to have the blade at speed to avoid burning the product and plunge in three sets of 4-5mm increments to complete the cut. Finally, allow for 2-3mm for the final skim to size. Once scribed to the walls with a circular saw, you can sand the front edge. Top and bottom edges should be sanded with 240 grit sandpaper to remove any chipping or sharp edge that has occurred during the scribing and cutting process.
To bond two worktops together, you'll need a 2-part epoxy resin adhesive. Bushboard also supplies its own patented colour-matched adhesive called Complete – a liquid polyurethane-based formula adopted from the marine and aerospace industries, offering gap filling properties and strong grab adhesion to create a water-tight seal. Joints can be formed either as a mason mitre or butt joint.
Make a dry-fit of the joint before using your chosen adhesive to adhere the two parts together. Suction cups should be used to keep the edges tight and once these edges have been pulled up tight you should see adhesive squeeze out. This surplus adhesive must be removed at this point using a cleaning wipe and not left to cure as that will negatively impact the finish.
Finally, edges can be shaped using a router and template to the desired radius or shape then using grit sandpapers to create a smooth front edge and remove any router marks. As they are supplied with a finished surface with a semi-finished front edge that must be sanded to remove any visible manufacturing saw marks. No oiling or polishing is required to complete the installation.
Final finishes
With its waterproof core and nonporous surface, the compact laminate Zenith range is ideal for installing under-mounted sinks and inset drainage grooves. Both inset sinks and drainage grooves can be installed with relative ease, ensuring the functionality of the kitchen appeals as strongly as its looks.

Complementing any kitchen design, the Zenith range comes with matching breakfast bars, upstands and splashbacks, which are as easy to install as the worksurfaces, meaning there are opportunities for further hassle-free work.
As homeowners look for maximum value from their investment in home improvements, compact laminate can help any time-pressed installers with its straightforward installation process, further attracting clients with striking design possibilities, rivalling stone worktops not just in cost but versatility.

TILING TALK
EXPERT HANDS REQUIRES EXPERT TOOLS
Tiling is a job that takes accuracy and precision. It takes a superior level of skill and expertise but It’s also one of those jobs where, the old adage is true where a tradesperson is only as good as the tools he uses.

Whether tiling a kitchen or a bathroom, it’s vital that you have the right tools to complete the task to a high standard and to also get the job done quickly as time is money.
Given the wide-ranging tiling equipment and supplies available in today’s market, it can be daunting to know what the absolute musthaves are. Steven Davidson from U-PRO, a UK trade supplies retailer, provides his top three recommendations for tiling tools that will help you get a finish that’s a cut above:

1) TILE CUTTER - this is probably one of the most important tools for tiling a kitchen or bathroom. Many rooms are not perfectly square or symmetrical and require tiles to be customised to fit a specific space. This is not just within the room itself but also around door frames, sinks, toilets and edges. An electric tile cutter such as the RUBI ND-200 is ideal for working in small spaces and is light enough to be transported to every job.

2) TILING TROWEL - the right type of trowel is an essential part of any tiling job to ensure a smooth, even distribution of the tile adhesive that’s used to keep the tiles in place on a floor or wall. The trowel design and size will depend on the size of tile that you are laying. Notched trowels, like the RUBI 10mm square notch tiling trowel, are particularly useful because they create grooves in that help to distribute the adhesive consistently under the tile.

3) TILE SPACERS - spacers are such a simple but vital tool for any tiler. And yet, many professionals rely on cheap spacers to do the job, which can then translate into uneven gaps and crooked tiles. When choosing spacers, you must ensure they’re robust and sturdy. The RUBI floor tile spacers, for example, have a hollow structure with internal reinforcements which allows the spacers to support tension on tiles and enables the spacers to be left in the joint and over grouted.

Proudly produced using European Plywood

We launched our Timeless Trade range over ten years ago and haven’t looked back. Crafted using PEFC certified Plywood core, ethically sourced from Western Europe and decorative HPL, these panels create a watertight solution, which doesn’t break the bank.

A combination of supply chain challenges and reduced disposable income among homeowners means many installers are being challenged to find alternatives to bathroom tiles which maximise value without compromising aesthetics. Bathroom panels have quickly emerged as a popular response to these market challenges, so we ran a Q&A session with Keely Greenhalgh, National Sales Manager at Mermaid, about some of the most pressing topics among installers.
possible and free of any dirt, grease or debris, but as long as the surface isn’t completely out of plumb, panels can even be used to disguise uneven surfaces.
leaving stub pipes at the positions where the equipment will be fitted. Other furniture and sanitary ware such as sinks and toilets should be installed after the panels have been fitted.
tiling?
A. The development of adhesive and product technology over recent years means installers can rest assured that there’ll be no water ingress whatsoever provided they choose their panelling system and adhesive wisely. Postformed panels such as Mermaid’s Elite range not only offer tongue and groove edges which easily slot together without any gaps, but also a 100% waterproof core. Mermaid’s patented Complete adhesive, meanwhile, acts as the perfect partner. The adhesive is made from a liquid polyurethanebased formula adopted from the marine and aerospace industries, which offers strong grab adhesion and gap filling properties that will repel water.
A. Broadly speaking, most panels can be fixed to any wall provided the manufacturer’s recommended adhesive is used. Some preparatory work will generally be required to ensure the surface is as smooth as
The answer to this question may vary depending on which product you choose. With many panels, the edge details are the same on both the top and the bottom, so the panels can be fitted either way up. This ensures that both panels have a square edge fitted into the corner, and the edge with the groove and fixing lip at the outside. The patterns used on Mermaid panels are generally random, however. This means that although on certain designs there may be a slight difference in appearance, that difference should be barely noticeable.
When using more decorative tongue and groove panels, such as our Elite range, the panels arrive with the design predetermined randomly connected to the tongue and groove or postformed edge. The result is that the layout dictates how each panel needs to be connected in sequence, so careful planning and some positioning before any adhesive is applied is generally a good idea.
Q. Should my bathroom panels be fitted before or after my sanitaryware is installed?
It is important that the bath or shower tray is already securely in place and sealed appropriately before the panels are installed. Under no circumstances should the bath or shower tray be installed on top of the panels. All pipework should be pre-installed,
A. It goes without saying that this will be dictated by the experience and skillset of the installer, but as a general rule, we find that the typical bathroom can take two to three days to tile, yet just three to four hours to panel. Given the pressure on homeowners’ disposable income, this can be a handy way for them to save on installation time, while installers can focus on progressing to their next job that bit quicker.
Q: What are the top current trends in bathroom surfaces, and what is coming next?
A: As well as the popularity of natural textures and patterns, we’re also seeing a real shift towards products which are both easy to maintain and hygienic to use. This has prompted growing levels of interest in bathroom panel ranges capable of replicating those textures and patterns without the unsightly grout lines associated with tiling.

More and more people are also opting for a larger shower enclosure instead of a bath, which again makes panels such as Mermaid’s Elite range a popular choice given the importance of that seamless aesthetic and watertight finish.
www.mermaidpanels.co.uk.
Q. Can panels create the same water-tight finish as tiles?
Q. Are there any limitations to the type of surface I can fix bathroom panels to?
Q. Does it matter which way up my bathroom panels are installed?
Q. A lot is said about how quick panels are to fit, but how does installation time compare to

CUTTING OF INSULATING MATERIALS
We review the Festool ISC 240 cordless insulation saw

Anyone who regularly cuts insulating materials will be more than familiar with problems which can include blades failing or flying glass fibres that penetrate the skin like tiny needles, or worst of all, released glass and mineral wool fibres that can cause fits of coughing. Power tool specialist, Festool claims that its ISC 240 cordless insulation saw, renders many of these unpleasant experiences as a thing of the past.
Since its launch, the ISC 240 the company states that it has been revolutionising the cutting of insulating materials and has now become the tool of choice on many construction sites as it ticks all the boxes that until now, workmen have longed for.

The smart home is too fragmented, consumers do not understand the value proposition and they’re facing significant pain points at every level across the value chain. Whether that’s interoperability between devices, high cost, battery life limitations or difficult installation, consumers are constantly uncovering issues that means the experience of the smart home does not match up to the hype that was sold to them.
That’s where Zuma comes in—simplifying the smart home with quality products that put the customer experience first. Zuma wants to do away with the siloed approach between manufacturers that creates a mish mash of devices that can’t or won’t work together, and instead provide a comprehensive suite of products that just do.

Taking the smart home to the ceiling, its smart lights blend elegant industrial design with purpose. Made from highquality materials with precision engineering, Zuma Lumisonic is the first fully controllable, customisable multi-sensory light to include hi-fi quality sound. That means it can provide effortless multiroom surround sound and lighting to suit any mood, throughout the whole home. As it’s IP65 rated, it can be retrofitted into any room even the bathroom, transforming a family bathroom into a spa or kitchen into a concert hall at the touch of a button. As these rooms become increasingly important for personal wellbeing and entertaining, products need to become smarter to add genuine value.
Bolstering its offering further, Zuma launches Smart Bezel Voice in September, integrating Alexa voice control into its Lumisonic unit. This takes Amazon’s Alexa functionality off work surfaces and into the ceiling for easy voice control whenever you need it. This is the first step in Zuma’s Smart Bezel series which will streamline the home. New bezels will include thermostats, smoke detectors, security cameras and more.
Pleasingly, all this is not cost prohibitive, as typically, installing Zuma into an entire home will come at around a quarter of the cost of a legacy custom installation, and the procedure is straightforward too. Zuma can generally fit into old spotlight fittings and needs nothing more than some simple wiring, with no drilling or rewiring required.
Zuma CEO, Morten Warren, summarises, “Bringing smart home technology together under one roof, is quite literally, exactly what the industry has been missing until now, and Zuma is proud to be leading the way. Zuma wants to give customers a smart home experience that truly makes the home behave more intuitively and in a way that removes the boundaries of technical know-how and expense. If the smart home is broken, that has to be the cure.”

SUSTAINABLE SELF-BUILD
FEATURING GIRA SWITCHES IN NATURAL RAW MATERIALS

Gira, global full-range suppliers of intelligent building solutions for commercial and residential property, has completed a project where it supplied its switches to a family home in rural Country Antrim, Northern Ireland.

A remote plot of land, a rather tight budget, and a young family’s dream of their own home, was the starting point for the House in the Hollow, a unique project that has captivated thousands of followers on Instagram (@ thehouseinthehollow). It all began with the birth of Gareth and Lindsey Boyd’s son, Archie. The couple soon realised they would need more space once he became a toddler and as an architectural technician, Gareth had always dreamed of building his own house but the couple only had a budget of £160,000.
The Boyds put their house on the market in August 2017 to
fund their self-build which meant mean they needed to finish their new home as quickly as possible. They were looking for a rural site, with plenty of space for Archie and their dogs Buddy and Ivy. Luckily Gareth found the perfect property a few months later. Located in the countryside of County Antrim, Northern Ireland, the plot included a driveway, a preinstalled waterpipe, and an electric pole in reach: enough for Gareth to get to work. The couple envisioned an open floor plan with a spacious kitchen, dining, and living area at the center of their home. Sustainability was also a major concern. Apart from using natural materials and finishes, they wanted to keep the building as energy efficient as possible.
As Gareth and Lindsey wanted to build a nature-based home, they decided to go for a timberframe structure. The facade was fully clad in cedar shingles as the couple loved how the
uneven finish blended in with the surrounding scenery. The walls and roof were pumped with cellulose installation and the couple took a fabric-first approach to make their house sustainable, concentrating on the building envelope to reduce their energy consumption. The house’s structure and windows nearly meet the standard of a “passive” home.
Gareth paid special attention to air tightness and installed a mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) unit to recycle indoor heat. All in all, this keeps running costs as low as £300 per year.
The Boyds didn’t have a specific style in mind when it came to decorating and furnishing the interior, but they were strongly inspired by Scandinavian architecture and design. As the house slowly took shape, they also got a lot of ideas from similar homes on Instagram. For

"Our Gira Esprit Linoleum-Plywood range unites two natural materials which have always been popular with architects and designers, as well as proving robust and versatile.”Gira Esprit Design Line
the finishing touches on their walls, they installed Gira Esprit switches in linoleum-plywood. The aesthetic immediately caught Gareth’s eye: a certain simplicity and attention to detail, combined with natural materials. The switches have a stylish and contemporary, yet understated appeal – exactly what he was looking for. They come with an optional push-button operation for integration into the smart home. The surrounds are fully compatible with sensors in the Boyds’ home so that all the thermostats and humidistats look alike. In fact, the switches tie in so well with the rest of the interior, they look as if they have been made for it.
The family have been living in their new house for two years and relish being so close to nature in every season. Of course, there’s still a lot of work to do as they focus on landscaping and finishing touches, but it already feels like a true home for Gareth, Lindsay, Archie, Buddy and Ivy.

DAVAL
&
KITCHEN, BAR AND LAUNDRY ROOM
Daval, has seamlessly fused traditional style with contemporary living at The Quarry House, a unique renovation in rural West Yorkshire.
The combination of the ultra-luxe Mayfair furniture in supermatt Charcoal finish alongside Finsbury, in opposing Silver and Frost White gives a truly architectural finish to the ground floor while ensuring the newly fitted kitchen, bar and laundry room, is in-keeping with the rest of the property. James Bodsworth, Design Director at Daval commented, “It was an absolute delight to work with our clients on The Quarry House, a beautiful detached house which has been lovingly restored and extended, complete with bespoke our furniture. The property is nestled in expansive grounds by the side of a working quarry and enjoys panoramic views of the Yorkshire countryside. Built using iconic Yorkshire stone from the quarry itself, the house blends heritage style and modern country.”

The design brief was for a bright, modern yet timeless kitchen that was spacious and functional. The clients wanted it to flow effortlessly into the sitting area, which is slightly elevated to enjoy the beautiful views. A large, functional granite-topped island was at the top of the wish list for entertaining family and friends informally and the Daval design team also needed to incorporate a mint green Aga as a main feature, alongside a conventional oven, induction hub and an integrated larder cupboard for ample storage.
James continued, “On our first site visit, we noticed there was a long and narrow corridor connecting the kitchen to the sunroom and
suggested that incorporating a bespoke home bar with an integrated wine cooler and bottle storage would bring the space to life, giving it a specific purpose. We finished the back wall of the bar with an antique brass effect mirror that runs the length of the cabinetry and makes the space look and feel deceptively more capacious, which is a great design trick to trick the eye and add a luxe element.”

Simon Bodsworth, Managing Director at Daval added, “We are always keen to bring our signature quality and service to residential projects so that we can create made-to-measure, made-to-order furniture which suits everyday life. This is particularly helpful for character properties and conversions as there is no such thing as a standard size or shape and it is so important to complement the existing architectural structure.”
Storage is a key consideration in a blended living space and personalized solutions are big news this year, with a strong emphasis on high-function larders which keep your essentials in an easy-toaccess location.

ROTPUNKT REINVENTING THE UTILITY ROOM

Rotpunkt, has unveiled its new Utility Furniture specially designed for compact and complete laundry rooms. Using its popular Zerox furniture, available in all 26 colour options, Rotpunkt has created a range of utility furniture that includes custom laundry cabinets, ergonomic housing for appliances, tall units, integrated waste systems and accessories such as integrated laundry baskets, adjustable shelves and angled storage options.

Matt Phillips, Head of UK Operations at Rotpunkt says, “Presenting a new approach to household management, our Utility Furniture is modular by design, which is helping to inspire new levels of creativity when considering the relocation of laundry appliances to previously redundant spaces like a hallway, box room and even first floor landing.”
The new Utility Furniture by Rotpunkt offers three tall unit designs in five available heights at 565-625mm depth, fully equipped with a range of interior elements and storage components. Options include:
1. Tall unit W450mm with laundry basket including 4, 5 or 6 adjustable shelves, a fixed shelf & one deep drawer with hanging laundry basket
2. Tall unit W600mm with shoe rack including none, 1 or 2 adjustable shelves, a fixed shelf and five angled baskets
3. Tall unit W600mm with 2 or 3 fixed shelves, which creates space for up to three laundry baskets [not included]. Available heights: H1820mm, H1950mm, H2080mm, H2210mm and H2340mm.
There is also a Built-under Drawer unit measuring H260 x W600 x D625mm, which is designed with 1 drawer and 1 extendable shelf and a 260mm high fascia.
An outstanding feature of Rotpunk’s new Zerox Utility range Hidden doors is the fact that it makes it easier to introduce utility room furniture into an open-plan kitchen space with a new access door, which opens in reverse. Thus embracing the possibilities of reconfiguring the ground floor, the access door provides discreet entry through a continuous run of tall units that when used, reveals a hidden room which is self-contained from the rest of the kitchen living space. Sizes are 900mm wide with five available heights ranging from 1820 to 2340mm.

The Sirius Buying Group recently held its annual conference at the Sunborn Gibraltar Hotel & Casino in Gibraltar. The company report that, as always, it was well supported throughout its 3-day duration.

Sirius Members were privy to a range of supplier presentations which were supplemented by a full day for set for oneto-one meetings, and of course the Awards Dinner which is always a main focus of the conference event. There were therefore, plenty of networking opportunities where suppliers and members could forge new relationships, as well as strengthen existing ones.
The Annual Gala Awards Dinner was a great social evening and Sirius would like to make a special mention of everyone’s generosity during the Charity Auction. The donations from its Members and Suppliers helped the group raise £12,000 for Disasters Emergency Committee, with all monies going towards humanitarian aid in the current crisis taking place in Ukraine. “Thank you to all in helping us raise money towards this worthwhile cause” said Steve Jones, Managing Director at Sirius Buying Group. “We also presented our 2022 Retailer and Supplier Awards during the Gala Dinner. Our Sirius Awards provide a great platform for our Members and Approved Suppliers to be recognised amongst their peers for their support, presence and growth within the Group.”

BEWARE! ALWAYS PRIORITISE ANY RISKS TO YOUR CUSTOMERS
The majority of inspections I undertake are hardly a matter of life or death for the customers or the companies who have called on my services, but this call definitely was!
The lady, a mother of three young children, had been working at the kitchen table with the children playing around her when they were shocked by a sudden loud crash and the sound of smashing glass. The children screamed and flying shards of fractured glass showered over the kitchen floor - even safety glass is dangerous in such circumstances!
The kitchen had been installed for just six weeks earlier, but the Mum looked across to see the extractor hood has fallen off the wall, shattering the glass fascia and the surface of the hob. She managed to hold herself together, remove the children from harm’s way, and sweep up the debris. She then found my details online and called me, which was fortunate as I happened to be on a series of inspections in Scotland and was only about thirty miles away at the time. I could therefore visit quickly and assess the situation.
Upon arrival, I noticed that the extractor had been fitted onto a stud wall with plasterboard on both sides and insulation in the narrow cavity. It had been fixed with two screws into keyhole slots on the back panel and the bottom edge had been resting on the glass splashback behind the hob. One of the screws, complete with a metal plasterboard fixing, had pulled right out of the plasterboard. The other was still in place but tilted downwards. It was in a large hole in the facing board and the far end of the screw was held about two turns into the plasterboard on the other side of the cavity, but there was no fixing at all.

A close look at the back of the hood showed four additional fixing holes that could have been utilised and the instructions did state that at least two of them should have been used and also that the security of the hood should be checked to ensure it was satisfactory.
Did the fitter have a bad day and simply forget the additional screws? I think not, as whoever thought such inadequate fixings in a plasterboard wall were good enough clearly had no concept of safety, so the idea of safety screws would hardly have been on their mind. I think the claim that will be made against the installer´s insurers (if they are insured, if not, it will become personal) will focus his or her minds in the future, and I’m only glad no-one was hurt on this occasion.

Some people say that the best way to learn is by making mistakes, but I don´t agree, as the best way is to learn - is from other people’s mistakes!
I do hope that this, sadly true story, will help to ensure that you always place the risks to your customers at the forefront of your thinking.

UWLA MD Yvonne Orgill says, “It is incredibly disappointing that these negotiations failed to make concrete advances on efforts to tackle
